Dwight Schar is a billionaire philanthropist who played a critical role in securing the building for the Inova multidisciplinary cancer and research center in Virginia. He went on, with his wife Martha, to make a $50 million transformational gift to the institution in 2015 and gifted a further $75 million in 2023 to support Inova’s heart and vascular program. The latter is the largest single donation the not-for-profit organization has received to date. Until recently Mr. Schar was the chairman of NVR, Inc., one of the largest homebuilders in the United States that boasts nearly $9 billion in annual revenues. He founded NVHomes in 1980 and borrowed funds in order to acquire his competitor and former employer Ryan Homes in 1987, creating NVR’s predecessor NVRyan. In 2003, Mr. Schar purchased a minority stake in the NFL’s Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders) for $200 million, selling it in 2021 for $320 million. Dwight Schar has five children, one of whom is the Elon University and University of Central Florida MBA graduate Spencer Schar.
