Question: How can dancers of color prove their place in the white world of ballet? By definition,
dance is for everyone. But how come we rarely see dancers of color have the lead role or even be seen
on stage? Racial prejudice is still a social issue that impacts society today. For instance Precious
Adams was told to bleach her skin by one of her teachers while studying at the Bolshoi Ballet
Academy. Michaela Deprince overheard one of directors saying we don t put a lot of effort in the
black girls, because they end up getting fat . So how can dancers of color to show others that they are
good enough to be put on stage?
