1 The Stonecutter 石 匠
“What?” A Stonecutter once cried. “A mere rock is more powerful
than I? Well, then I wish to be a rock.” Whoosh! In a matter of
seconds, he was standing tall upon a mountainside. He barely had
time to rejoice in his fine figure, however, when he heard strange
clipping sounds proceeding from his feet.
“什么?” 一个石匠曾经哭过。 “一块石头就比我强大?好吧,那
我想成为一块石头。” 嗖! 几秒钟的时间,他就站在了山腰上。
然而,他还没来得及为自己的好身材而高兴,
就听到脚下传来奇怪的咔嚓声。

1 The Stonecutter 石 匠
He looked down and, to his dismay, he saw something disturbing.
He found a tiny human being sitting there engaged in cutting chunks of
stone from his feet.
"What?" he shouted. "A puny creature like that more powerful than an
imposing rock like me? I want to be a man!“
他低头一看,令他沮丧的是,他看到了一些令人不安的东西。 他发现
一个小人坐在那里,正在从他的脚上切下大块的石头。“什么?” 他

1 The Stonecutter 石 匠
So he found he was once again a stonecutter going up into the
mountain to cut stone, earning his living in sweat and toil but
with a song in his heart because he was content to be what he
was and to live by what he had.

里却唱着歌,因为他满足于做自己,活出自己所拥有的。

2 The Zen Master’s Cup 禅 师 杯
“Oh! Oh! It’s Terrible!” cried the monk-on-probation who
had just cracked the Zen Master's favorite
(and valuable) drinking cup.
The frightened youngster went to the Zen Master and
asked, “Why must there be death?”
“哦! 哦! 它是可怕的!” 刚刚打碎了禅师最喜欢的
(也是有价值的)水杯的见习僧哭了起来。
吓坏了的少年走到禅师面前问道:“为什么一定要死?”

2 The Zen Master’s Cup 禅 师 杯
The Master answered, "Death is natural. It comes to all persons and things. We
should not greet it with fear or meet death with anger. Why do you ask?"
"Because, Master, death has come upon your cup.“
The Master remained calm, equanimous,
seeing the impermanence of all conditioned things.
师曰:“死是自然的,人事万物皆有,遇死不惧怕,死不嗔,问何故?”“因
为,师父,你的杯中已临死。” 师父保持冷静,平静,看到所有有为的事物的
无常。
Reflection 反射
* All conditioned things arise and fall. They are
impermanent and subject to decay and death.
* Do not crave, attach and cling to worldly transient things
(and people). They will sooner or later separate from us.
* Ignorance, greed, craving and attachment are the root
cause of Dukkha.
* 所有有为的事物都会生起灭去。 它们是无常的,会腐
烂和死亡。 * 不要贪爱、执着和执着世俗短暂的事物
(和人)。 他们迟早会与我们分离。 * 无明、贪婪、

Traveler: "What kind of weather are we going to have
today?"
Shepherd: "The kind of weather I like."
Traveler: "How do you know it will be the kind of weather
you like?"

3 The Wise Shepherd 聪明的牧羊人
Shepherd: "Having found out, sir, that I cannot always get
what I like, I have learned to always like what I get. So I am
quite sure we will have the kind of weather I like."
牧羊人:“我发现,先生,我不能总是得到我喜欢的东西,我学会了总是
喜欢我得到的东西。所以我很确定我们会有我喜欢的那种天气。”
Reflection 反射
* Wise ones know this: “If things can be changed for the
better, then we should try our best to do it. If things are
inevitable, then learn to accept them peacefully.”
* Nothing is certain of a future happening. Wise ones,
SEEING this, live peacefully with the ups and downs of life.
* 聪明的人知道:“如果事情可以变得更好,那么我们
应该尽力去做。 如果事情是不可避免的,那就学会平静
地接受它们。” * 没有什么可以确定未来会发生。 智者,

4 A Young Warrior’s Challenge 年轻战士的挑战
There once lived a great warrior. Though quite old, he
still was able to defeat any challenger. His reputation
extended far and wide throughout the land and many
students gathered to study under him.
曾经有一位伟大的战士。 虽然年纪大了,但他依然能够击败
任何挑战者。 他的名声传遍了全国,许多学生聚集在他的手
下学习。

One day an infamous young warrior arrived at the village. He was determined to
be the first man to defeat the great master. Along with his strength, he had an
uncanny ability to spot and exploit any weakness in an opponent. He would wait
for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing a weakness, and then
would strike with merciless force and lightning speed. No one had ever lasted
with him in a match beyond the first move.
有一天,一个臭名昭著的年轻战士来到了村子。 他立志成为第一个打
败大师的人。 除了他的力量,他还有一种不可思议的能力,可以发现
并利用对手的任何弱点。 他会等对方先出手,露出弱点,然后以无情

Much against the advice of his concerned
students, the old master gladly accepted the
young warrior's challenge. As the two
squared off for battle, the young warrior
began to hurl insults at the old master. He
threw dirt and spit in his face. For hours he
verbally assaulted him with every curse and
insult known to mankind. But the old warrior
merely stood there motionless and calm.
Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself.
Knowing he was defeated, he left feeling
shamed.
老师傅不顾学生的建议,欣然接受了年轻武士
的挑战。 两人开战时,年轻的武者开始辱骂老
主人。 他往脸上扔泥土和唾沫。 几个小时以
来,他用人类所知的每一种诅咒和侮辱口头攻
击他。 可老武者只是站在那里一动不动,很平
静。 终于,年轻的武者筋疲力尽了。 知道自

Somewhat disappointed that he did not fight the insolent youth, the
students gathered around the old master and questioned him. "How could
you endure such an indignity? How did you drive him away?"
"If someone comes to give you a gift and you do not receive it," the master
replied, "to whom does the gift belong?“
有点失望他没有和那个张狂的青年交手,学生们围在老爷子身边,质问他。 “你
怎么能忍受这样的屈辱?你是怎么把他赶走的?”“如果有人来给你礼物,你没
有收到,”师父回答,“礼物是属于谁的?”
Reflection 反射
* A wise person has calm, patience and endurance. He does
not react to insults and other verbal abuses hurled at him.
* It’s the one who uses wrong speech who suffers in his mind.
Wrong speech has bad karmic consequences.
* "To win without violence is the greatest victory!"
* 聪明的人有冷静、耐心和耐力。 他不会对向他投
掷的侮辱和其他辱骂做出反应。 * 说错话的人心里

While dwelling at Jetavana, Savatthi, the Buddha told this story
concerning a landowner who had lost his old father. On the death of
his father, they say, the landowner continued lamenting, quite unable
to shake off his grief. The Buddha, with His psychic power, perceived
in the man a capacity to attain to a Stage of Sainthood.
佛陀住在舍卫城只园时,讲述了一个失去老父亲的地主的故事。 他们说,在
他父亲去世后,地主继续哀叹,无法摆脱他的悲伤。 佛陀以他的神通,觉察
到这个人有达到圣地的能力。

When the Buddha went on His alms rounds in Sāvatthi , He came to the
landowner’s house. He then sat on the seat prepared by the grieving man for
him. The Buddha then said to the man, "Lay Brother, art thou grieving?" and
the man replied, "Yes, Reverend Sir, I am."
The Buddha then said, "Friend, wise men in the past listened to the Words of
Wisdom, and when they lost a father, they did not grieve." The Buddha then
told the grieving landowner this ancient story
about the wise boy Sujata.
佛陀在舍卫城布施时,来到了地主家。 然后,他坐在悲伤的人为他准备的座位上。
佛陀对那人说:“居士,你在悲伤吗?” 那人回答说:“是的,先生,我是。”
佛说:“朋友,过去的智者,听了智慧语,失去了父亲,不悲伤。” 佛陀然后告诉

Once upon a time when King Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, a
baby boy, a Bodhisatta was born in the home of a landowner. The
parents named him Sujāta. Sujata, his parents and his grandfather
lived happily in their home in Savatthi.
When Sujata was a young boy, his grandfather died.
曾几何时,布茹阿玛达多国王在贝拿勒斯统治,一个男婴,菩萨出生在一个
地主的家里。 父母给他取名为Sujata。 Sujata、他的父母和他的祖父在他们
位于 Savatthi 的家中幸福地生活着。 当 Sujata 还是个小男孩时,

Sujata’s father from the day of the old man’s death, was filled with
sorrow. After taking the ashes of the deceased from the place of
cremation, Sujata’s father erected an earth-mound in his garden and
deposited the remains there. He would visit the mound daily and stay
for hours, wailing and lamenting at the old man’s death. He did not
bother to bathe, could not eat or sleep
and did not attend to his work and his business.
Sujata的父亲从老人去世那天起,就充满了悲伤。 将死者的骨灰从火葬场带
走后,Sujata的父亲在他的花园里竖起了一个土堆,并将骨灰存放在那里。

Sujata, the young Bodhisatta, on observing this, thought to himself ,
"My father ever since the death of my grandfather goes about
overwhelmed with grief. He is in great pain. No one, I am sure, except
myself has the power to help him and relieve him of his grief.
I will find a way to deliver him from his sorrow.”
年轻的菩萨须生陀见此,心想:“我的父亲自从祖父去世后,悲痛欲绝。他
非常痛苦。我敢肯定,除了我自己,没有人能帮助他。 让他从悲伤中解脱出
来。我会想办法把他从悲伤中解救出来。”

Sujata set off from his home and went to the country side. Upon
seeing a dead ox lying outside the city, he brought grass and water
and placing them before it, wailed loudly, “ Oh, my dear ox, wake up,
wake up! Eat and drink, eat and drink.“ Many who passed by were
shocked to see this. One man who knew Sujata’s family, said to him,
“Friend Sujāta, are you mad? Why do you offer grass and water to a
dead ox? It cannot wake up!”
But Sujata did not answer him; he continued wailing.
Sujata从他的家出发,前往乡村。 看到城外躺着一头死牛,他拿来草和水,
放在它面前,大声哀号:“哦,我亲爱的牛,醒醒醒醒!吃喝吃吃喝喝。”

So, the family friend went to seek out Sujata’s father . He told the
grieving man, "Your son Sujata has become mad. He is giving grass
and water to a dead ox." On hearing this the landowner ceased to
grieve for his father. He went in haste to meet with his son Sujata. He
cried, "My dear Sujāta, are you not in your sober senses? Why do you
offer grass and water to the carcass of an ox?
It is dead. It cannot come back."
于是,家人的朋友去找了Sujata的父亲。 他对悲伤的人说:“你的儿子
Sujata 疯了。他正在给一头死牛吃草和水。” 听到这话,地主不再为他的父
亲悲伤。 他急忙去见他的儿子Sujata。 他喊道:“亲爱的须陀,你不是清醒
的吗?你为什么要给牛的尸体供草和水?它已经死了,它不能回来了。”

Sujata looked at his father and said, “Father, the ox still has a head and
body, and you tell me it cannot come back. Grandfather has died and
has been cremated. He has no head and body now. Then father, why
are you still spending hours crying and lamenting at his ashes in our
garden and refusing to bathe, eat and carry on with your work?”
Sujata看着他的父亲说:“父亲,这头牛还有头和身体,你告诉我它不能回
来。 祖父已经去世并被火化。 他现在没有头和身体。 那么父亲,你为什么
还要花几个小时在我们花园里为他的骨灰哭泣和哀悼,拒绝洗澡、
吃饭和继续你的工作?”

On hearing this, the father of the Bodhisatta Sujata thought: "My son is
wise. He knows the right thing to be done both for this world and for the
next. He did this to give me wisdom and relieve me from suffering.”
And he said, "My dear and wise son Sujāta, you have made known to me
that all existing things are impermanent. Henceforth I will not grieve. You
are one so special a son, so wise and compassionate.
Come let’s go back home.” From that day onwards,
Sujata’s father became more peaceful thanks to Sujata the Bodhisatta.
闻此,须弥菩萨的父亲心想:“我的儿子很聪明。他知道为这个世界和来世做正
确的事情。他这样做是为了给我智慧,让我摆脱痛苦。” 他说:“我亲爱而睿智
的儿子 Sujāta,你让我知道所有存在的事物都是无常的。 从此我不再悲伤。 你
是一个如此特别的儿子,如此聪明和富有同情心。 来吧,我们回家吧。”从那天
起,善生的父亲在善生菩萨的帮助下变得更加平静。

Buddha the Master having ended the story, preached the Truths of
Dhamma to the landowner who had listened with full mindfulness.
At the conclusion of the Truths the landowner attained
the First Sage of Sainthood – A Sotapanna.
And The Buddha said, “At that time I myself was Sujāta.”
上师佛陀结束了故事,向全神贯注地聆听的地主宣讲了佛法的真理。 在真理
结束时,地主证得第一圣圣——A Sotapanna。
佛陀说:“那时我自己就是须弥陀。”

Practice the Dhamma well to SEE the
arising and falling of all conditioned
things.
好好修习佛法,以观察一切因缘法的生灭。
The root cause of
Dukkha or suffering is
ignorance and craving.
This is removed by
wisdom and non-
attachment.

After winning several archery contests, the young and rather boastful
champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an
archer. The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency
when he hit a distant bull's eye on his first try, and then split that arrow
with his second shot.
在赢得了几次射箭比赛后,这位年轻而自负的冠军挑战了一位以弓箭手着称的
禅师。 这位年轻人在第一次尝试中击中远处的靶心,然后第二次射出那支箭时,

“There,” he said to the old Zen master, “see if you can match that!”
Undisturbed, the master did not draw his bow,
but rather motioned for the
young archer to follow him up the mountain.

Curious about the old fellow's intentions,
the champion followed him high into the mountain
until they reached a deep chasm spanned

Calmly stepping out onto the middle of the unsteady
and certainly perilous bridge,
the old master picked a far away tree as a target,
drew his bow, and fired a clean, direct hit.

"Now it is your turn," he said as he gracefully stepped
back onto the safe ground. Staring with terror into the
seemingly bottomless and beckoning abyss,
the young man could not force himself to step out onto
the log, no less shoot at a target.

似无底又招手的深渊,无法强行踏上木头,更不敢向目标射击。

"You have much skill with your bow," the
master said, sensing his challenger's predicament,
"but you have little skill
with the mind that lets loose the shot."

“但你的头脑没有什么技巧可以让你投篮。”
The mind has to be trained
to be strong and steady –
able to concentrate and
focus.
必须训练心智变得坚强和稳

On one occasion, the Buddha was sitting with some of His disciples.
One of His disciples asked Him, “Lord how can we control our
anger?”
The Buddha said, “Let Me tell you a story. By listening to this story
you will learn to control your anger and you will be more peaceful.”
The story goes like this:
有一次,佛陀和他的一些弟子坐在一起。他的一个门徒问他:“主啊,我们
怎样才能控制我们的怒气呢?”佛陀说:“让我告诉你一个故事。 通过听这个
故事你会学会控制你的愤怒,你会更加平和。”故事是这样的:

Once upon a time there lived a quarrelsome woman in a village.
She used to get angry over little things. In anger she used to say
a lot of abusive words and when her anger subsided, she would feel
very sorry.
Her whole family was upset due to her uncontrollable bad temper.
There was always an atmosphere of quarrel in the family because of
her.
从前,在一个村庄里住着一个爱争吵的女人。她过去常常为一点小事生气。 生气
的时候她常说说了很多脏话,当她的怒气平息后,她会感到很抱歉。由于她无法
控制的坏脾气,她全家人都很不高兴。家里总是因为她吵架的气氛。

One day a wise and compassionate monk came to the door of that
woman on alms round for his food.
After offering some food to the monk, the woman told the monk
about her problem.
She said, “Oh Wise One! I get angry very quickly. I could not
control my anger even if I wanted to. Please tell me of a way so that
I can control my anger.”
一天,一位睿智慈悲的比丘来到那个女人的门前,托钵供养他。给和尚一
些食物后,女人把她的问题告诉了和尚。她说:“哦,聪明人! 我很快
就会生气。 我想控制也控制不住自己的愤怒。 请告诉我一个方法,让我
可以控制我的愤怒。”

The monk took out a small bottle of medicine from his bag and gave it to
her.
The monk then said to the woman, “This bottle contains the medicine for
anger. Whenever you get angry, put four drops of the medicine on your
tongue and keep it in the mouth for 10 minutes. Do not open the mouth for
10 minutes, otherwise the medicine will not have any effect. You have to
follow this mindfully for 7 days.”
和尚从包里拿出一小瓶药递给她。和尚又对妇人说:“这瓶里装的是怒药。
每当你生气时,将四滴药滴在舌头上,含在口中10分钟。 10分钟内不要
张嘴,否则药不起任何作用。 你必须在 7 天内牢记这一点。”

Saying this, the monk left the woman’s house.
The woman started using the medicine as instructed by the monk.
In just seven days, she lost her habit of getting angry.
After seven days, when the monk came again to her door, the
woman fell at his feet and said,
“Oh, Wise One! Your medicine has done wonders to me!
说完,和尚就离开了女人的家。女人按照和尚的指示开始服药。短短七日,
她就改掉了生气的习惯。过了七日,比丘再次来到她门前,女人俯伏在他
脚下说:“哦,聪明人! 你的药对我产生了奇迹!

I don't get angry anymore because of taking your medicine. There
is now an atmosphere of peace in my family.”
Upon hearing her words, the monk smiled and said, “Daughter,
there was no medicine in that bottle. In fact, it was filled only with
water. You have not controlled your anger by this medicine but you
have controlled your anger by keeping quiet.”
我不会因为吃了你的药而生气了。 现在我家里有一种和平的气氛。” 和
尚闻言,笑道:“女儿,那瓶里没有药。 事实上,它只装满了水。 你没
有用这种药控制你的愤怒,但你通过保持安静控制了你的愤怒。”

After telling the story, the Buddha explained,
“Anger can only be controlled by the angry person through
keeping quiet.
An angry person speaks unwholesome abusive words. This
will spark resentment and quarrel and the anger does not
dissipate. So, you see, an effective cure is silence when
anger arises in the mind.”
讲完这个故事后,佛陀解释说:“生气的人只能通过保持安静来控制愤怒。
一个愤怒的人说出不健康的辱骂的话。 这会激起怨恨和争吵,而愤怒不
会消散。 所以,你看,当愤怒在心中升起时,一种有效的治疗方法就是

If we look into our life, we will find that often there are moments in our life when we
get angry and lose our composure.
When someone gets angry, his mind stops working properly and his mouth starts
talking in anger.
When the person speaks unwholesome abusive words for which he will regret later,
the angry person not only commits mental violence but he can also commit physical
violence or aggression. This is unwholesome action and generates bad karma.
如果我们审视自己的生活,我们会发现,在我们的生活中,常常会有生气和失态
的时刻。当一个人生气的时候,他的头脑停止正常工作,他的嘴巴开始愤怒地说

The mental states of anger will not last… they will pass. So, it is wise to
remain silent in those angry moments. Watch the mind mindfully. Let states
of calmness and composure arise. This will check to prevent unwholesome
speech and action arising like lying, slander using harsh abusive speech,
quarrels, aggressive or violent behavior and fights.
So, whenever you get angry, always keep calm, ‘Take a few drops of the
medicine called
SILENCE and close your mouth for some time.’
You will be saved from much trouble and Dukkha or suffering.

for an interview in a TV
Program called
“Finding Happiness”.
The interviewer asked, “Sir,
what was the time when you
felt happiest in your life?”
At this, the billionaire replied,
“I have gone through four
stages of happiness in life
and finally I understood the
meaning of true happiness.

business and corporate
world where I
accumulated great wealth
and resources.
At this stage I was very
happy but I didn’t get the
happiness I wanted.

Then came the Second Stage
when I started collecting
valuables like all sorts of
jewelry and rare items like

my country and also became

I did not get the happiness

wheelchairs for disabled
children. At the of behest of my
friend I immediately bought
those.
My friend insisted that I must go
with him and hand over the
wheelchairs to those disabled
children myself. Because he
insisted again and again I agreed
and got ready and went with him.

I gave the wheelchairs to all
those disabled children myself.
When I was handing over them
those wheelchairs, I saw a
strange glow of happiness on
the faces of these children.
Later, I saw them all sitting in
those wheelchairs and moving
around, having fun.
The scene was as if we were all
at picnic spot and they were all
sharing their happiness.
当我到达那个地方时,我自
己把轮椅给了所有那些残疾
儿童。 当我把那些轮椅交给
他们时,我看到这些孩子的

At that time, I felt real
happiness inside me. When I
was about to leave the place,
one of those disabled kids
came over to me and
grabbed my legs tightly.
I leaned over and asked him,
“Do you need anything else,
Boy? Just let me know. I will
get it for you.”

The kid replied, “No, I just want
to remember your face so that
when I meet you in heaven, I can
recognize you and thank you
once again.
This answer not only shocked
me but also completely changed
my outlook towards life. At that
time I felt I was truly happy and
realized what real happiness is.
I learnt this invaluable
LIFE Lesson:
“Bringing Happiness to Others
brings True Happiness
to oneself.”
孩子回答说:“不,我只是

天堂遇见你时,我能认出你,
再次感谢你。这个答案不仅

  • 4. 1 The Stonecutter 石 匠 “What?” A Stonecutter once cried. “A mere rock is more powerful than I? Well, then I wish to be a rock.” Whoosh! In a matter of seconds, he was standing tall upon a mountainside. He would wait for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing a weakness, and then would strike with merciless force and lightning speed.   • 13. Much against the advice of his concerned students, the old master gladly accepted the young warrior's challenge. As the two squared off for battle, the young warrior began to hurl insults at the old master. He threw dirt and spit in his face. For hours he verbally assaulted him with every curse and insult known to mankind. But the old warrior merely stood there motionless and calm. Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself.   • 17. While dwelling at Jetavana, Savatthi, the Buddha told this story concerning a landowner who had lost his old father. On the death of his father, they say, the landowner continued lamenting, quite unable to shake off his grief. The Buddha, with His psychic power, perceived in the man a capacity to attain to a Stage of Sainthood. 佛陀住在舍卫城只园时,讲述了一个失去老父亲的地主的故事。 他们说,在 他父亲去世后,地主继续哀叹,无法摆脱他的悲伤。 佛陀以他的神通,觉察 到这个人有达到圣地的能力。 15
  • 18. When the Buddha went on His alms rounds in Sāvatthi , He came to the landowner’s house. He then sat on the seat prepared by the grieving man for him. The Buddha then said to the man, "Lay Brother, art thou grieving?" and the man replied, "Yes, Reverend Sir, I am." The Buddha then said, "Friend, wise men in the past listened to the Words of Wisdom, and when they lost a father, they did not grieve."   • 19. Once upon a time when King Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, a baby boy, a Bodhisatta was born in the home of a landowner. The parents named him Sujāta. Sujata, his parents and his grandfather lived happily in their home in Savatthi.   • 20. Sujata’s father from the day of the old man’s death, was filled with sorrow. After taking the ashes of the deceased from the place of cremation, Sujata’s father erected an earth-mound in his garden and deposited the remains there. He would visit the mound daily and stay for hours, wailing and lamenting at the old man’s death. He did not bother to bathe, could not eat or sleep and did not attend to his work and his business.   • 22. Sujata set off from his home and went to the country side. Upon seeing a dead ox lying outside the city, he brought grass and water and placing them before it, wailed loudly, “ Oh, my dear ox, wake up, wake up! Eat and drink, eat and drink.“ Many who passed by were shocked to see this. One man who knew Sujata’s family, said to him, “Friend Sujāta, are you mad? Why do you offer grass and water to a dead ox? It cannot wake up!” But Sujata did not answer him; he continued wailing. On hearing this the landowner ceased to grieve for his father. He went in haste to meet with his son Sujata. He cried, "My dear Sujāta, are you not in your sober senses? Why do you offer grass and water to the carcass of an ox? It is dead. He did this to give me wisdom and relieve me from suffering.” And he said, "My dear and wise son Sujāta, you have made known to me that all existing things are impermanent. Henceforth I will not grieve. You are one so special a son, so wise and compassionate. She said, “Oh Wise One! I get angry very quickly. I could not control my anger even if I wanted to. Whenever you get angry, put four drops of the medicine on your tongue and keep it in the mouth for 10 minutes. Do not open the mouth for 10 minutes, otherwise the medicine will not have any effect.   • 49. The mental states of anger will not last… they will pass. So, it is wise to remain silent in those angry moments. Watch the mind mindfully. Let states of calmness and composure arise. This will check to prevent unwholesome speech and action arising like lying, slander using harsh abusive speech, quarrels, aggressive or violent behavior and fights.
