Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal Controversy
Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal
I would first like to begin this paper by saying why I decide to chose this topic out of the 3 choices. I
believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason this
one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It s hard to believe that someone
could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi scheme was
notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after his scandal
created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The fact that this
happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me extremely
concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up to the scandal,
the scandal itself, the people involved in the scandal, the legislation and regulations implemented after
the scandal, and my views on the outcome of the scandal.
Bernard Madoff was born April 29th, 1928 in Queens, New York. He grew up as a son of two Jewish
parents, one of which was a stockbroker. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 with a degree
in Political Science and then moved on to attend Brooklyn Law School where he dropped out to start
and pursue his own company, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.
The firm was started with an initial fund of $5,000, which was earned by Bernard working as a

Tube Feeding Ethical Dilemmas
Hydration and food is a fundamental staple in our everyday lives that we sometimes take for granted.
For a healthy person, nutrition is taken into the body as easily as breathing in air. If a patient is in need
of a feeding tube to stay alive is it ethical to not place the tube and let them die? It is devastating to
families when a tragedy occurs and their loved one can no longer sustain what was once a simple
bodily function, such as eating or drinking. Now, the decision must be made to either keep them alive
via feeding tube, or allow them to pass on. This topic continues to stir up an enormous amount of
controversy and deserves a great deal of moral and ethical consideration. Tube feeding is a basic care

224). Some bioethicists believe the right to refuse nutrition is engrained in our society and is distinctly
categorized as a medical treatment versus basic human care (Rae, 2010, p. 224). Physicians take the
Hippocratic Oath, which means they respect life and will do all they can to help save a life (Rae, 2010,
p. 212). The Hippocratic Oath prohibits doctors from killing or assisting patients in killing themselves
(Rae, 2009, p.212). Physicians also have to respect the patient s wishes, whether they agree with them
or not. What is important is that the patient is getting the best care possible and they are being treated
with respect and dignity. Advanced care planning is vital so that the patient and their family does not
unnecessarily have to suffer by poor legislature and healthcare loopholes (Russell, 2014, p. 997). By
planning in advance for life and death events the patient, family, and healthcare providers can all be
more successful in their prospective roles (Russell, 2014, p. 998). Discussing death and injury can be a
very difficult subject for many people. Each culture and religion may prepare and plan for death and

course, the clue would still be useless if not for a forensic chemist. The careers of forensic scientists

The overwhelming majority (Almost 90%) of forensic chemists will work in government associated

portion of forensic chemists work for private forensic labs. On a daily basis a forensic chemist

chemical substances, physical materials and ballistics. They may also write and present summaries of
findings. One who specializes crime scene investigation may visit crime scenes in order to plan how
and what evidence to collect, collect catalogue and preserve criminal evidence, take photos of or

summoned to court to testify as expert witnesses about the evidence on a crime scene and what it

nature of the evidence and to draw conclusions from the data acquired from the analytical tests
conducted. Some examples of these test include the qualitative examination of evidence using
microscopy and spot testing, analytical toxicology that looks for evidence in body fluids through a
range of instrumental techniques from optical methods (UV, infrared, and X ray spectroscopy) to
separations analyses (gas chromatography, HPLC, and thin layer chromatography). Another frequently

Aldo Leopold And Schaeffer s Personal Land Ethic
Aldo Leopold and Schaeffer have both been key contributors to my beliefs and opinions and they have
helped me shape my own personal land ethic. In Leopold s essay titled The Land Ethic he makes
several great points. Among these I have found the community concept, substitutes for a land ethic
and the future outlook to be the most important. Leopold states, All ethics so far evolved rest upon a
single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts (p.2). As
humans we have a job and typically we show care for the things that we really like and enjoy. But a
question we need to ask ourselves is who do we love and what do we care about? We live in

I believe that we need to think of the Earth as a gift and a home. We must take care of our Earth but
our personal health must come before Earth s. Lastly, our decision making should be guided by the
Bible and my common sense. Our Earth is truly a gift and it is a good gift from God. Genesis 1:31
states, God saw all that we made, and it was very good . We need to change the way that we look at
the Earth. Normally if we get a really nice gift we treasure it and do our best to protect it. This is the
same mindset that we need to have about our land. Secondly, we do need to recognize that we have
dominion over the Earth. God created us to take care of the Earth. In the beginning God created the
Heavens and the Earth and then he created man to be stewards of it. It is important not to get to crazy
and do things to harm the Earth but we must also remain healthy. Humans come before the land and
they always should. Lastly, when living on Earth we must make good decisions. These decisions
should be based on what our teachings tell us and our common sense. It is just common sense that
cutting down a tree or throwing a wrapper out the yard will harm the Earth. This semester I have
learned so much, and thought deeply about many topics. I know that the Earth is a gift and we are so
blessed to have this beautiful creation to live in. The many field trips that we went on made me realize
many things about our Earth that I didn t realize. Specifically the wastewater treatment we went on
made me realize how much waste we produce and it makes me feel like we are hurting our Earth. Too
often people don t think about the things that they are doing to our Earth. Psalm 8:6 states, You made
him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet . The Bible states many
times in context that we are to care for the Earth we have been

Psychopathy Case Studies
Psychopathy
Psychopathy, a personality/mental disorder, in which an individual often display apathy in conjunction
with manipulation strategies, and without the ability to demonstrate remorse for wrong actions, is a
characteristic that has shown to be highly present in violent criminality. It is believe that the
understanding of psychopathy can lead to the prediction of criminal behavior. However, psychopathic
behavior can be affected or influence by numerous variables, including age, sex, race, ethnicity or
socioeconomic status or in some cases a combination of two or more variables.
In the study by Huchzermeier and colleagues (2008), they investigated possible age differences in the
frequency of antisocial personality disorder (APD) and psychopathy, through a cross sectional study
of 226 male violent offenders. They hypothesize that psychopathy , and/or antisocial personality

Psychopathy was assed using the PCL, while SES was based on classification in the jail roster as well
was the ratings from the Hollingshead Index (1958). Though the use of police record, prior violent

hazards regression and Kaplan Meier survival analysis to examine discrete groups based on SES and
psychopathy. Based on the analysis, there was an observable interaction between psychopathy x SES x
ethnicity among European Americans in the prediction of recidivism at low levels of SES, but unable
to predict recidivism at high levels of SES (Walsh Kosson, 2007). Furthermore, results also suggest
that PCL scores are supportive predictors of violent criminality among African American males

How can nurses ensure that older people are treated with respect and dignity whist being cared for in

The aim of the following essay is to explore how nurses can ensure that
older people are treated with respect and dignity whist being cared for in
hospital or the community. The essay will seek to gain an understanding
of the biopsychosocial influences associated with dignity which affect the
older person.

Respecting the individual;
Intermediate care; Providing evidence based specialist care and
Promoting an active, healthy life.
The NSF makes it clear that in the past older people and their carers were not always treated with
respect or with dignity. It than goes on to suggest that delivering good care for older people in hospital
requires that staff have the appropriate skills and experience. This care should be underpinned by
fundamental principles that promote dignity (Webster
2004).
Within the UK the nursing code of professional conduct states that
registered nurses must respect they patients and promote and protect the
interests and dignity of patients at all times this emphasises the
importance of respecting the patient as an individual, (Nursing and
Midwifery Council (NMC) 2008).
The care of the older patient involves special expertise for many reasons such as physiological ageing
and the effects of medication may alter the disease presentation; pre existing conditions may make self
care more difficult and the incidence of depression and dementia more common; and arranging social
support for successful discharge requires complex skills. While a patient may have been admitted with
a physical problem, emotional issues are often also present,

Leonardo Da Vinci Is Famous As A Painter, Sculptor And
Leonardo Da Vinci is famous as a painter, sculptor and inventor. In reality he was so much more, with
the range of topics in his arsenal of knowledge being anatomy, zoology, botany, geology, optics,
aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to name a few. He did play a large role in the development of
knowledge about anatomy and the human body. He was one of the greatest anatomists of his time,
although unrecognized for it during his lifetime.
Anatomical studies were primarily for the purpose of better depiction of the human body and
presumably went no further than a study of the superficial structures. Da Vinci s acquaintance with
anatomy in the beginning would be that of the artist, and it must be remembered that his fame was

The earliest anatomical drawings by Leonardo are attributed to 1487. On the basis of these drawings
certain facts become manifest. It is apparent that his knowledge of anatomy was what he had acquired
by reading traditional writers such as Avicenna and Mundinus, by some animal dissection and by
surface inspection of the living human. (Morley, 554)
With his return to Florence, Leonardo again took up his anatomical studies, and it appears that for the
first time he had access to a reasonably large amount of dissection material, obtained at the Hospital of
Santa Maria Nuova. As the dates of his drawings indicate, he had further dissection specimens
available to him, although whether he during this Florentine period ever became the possessor of an
entire cadaver there is no certainty. At the beginning of this period he was still an amateur in the
anatomical discipline, and his remarkable observations emphasized his genius. It is wondered how
much dissection Da Vinci actually did and despite his remarkable observations of arteriosclerosis,
indicative of close observation of the arterial system, it was thought that Leonardo s used of animal
materials and his attempted to fit them to man which his how he came up with a five lobed liver.
Another characteristic of the period and one which indicates that Leonardo was yet primarily the

My Academic Writing Portfolio
In the beginning of the second semester of my senior year I created a binder called a writing portfolio.
It held all the assignments and essays I had finished in class. The writing portfolio is like a sapling that
would grow to become a tree with each new addition of essays added to it. Academic Writing: English

writing well since it taught me the basic mechanics of grammar and English at the same time. It
pushed me to the limits of writing at the utmost potential I was able to write. Some people might say
that this class is just another English class with an embellished name to it, but it is nowhere close to a

The Internal Revenue Service Of The United States
1. The Internal Revenue Service was first used as a means to pay for war expenses. In 1862 President
Lincoln and congress created the income tax to help fund the Civil War, but was later removed after
10 years (IRS, 2016). In 1894 Congress tried to reenact the income tax but the Supreme Court Stated
it was unconstitutional. In 1913, with the 16th amendment, Congress was able yet again to bring back
income tax, which helped to pay for World War I and II. Somewhere in the 1950 s the name changed
from The Bureau of Internal Revenue to the internal revenue Service which it is known for today

Explain Why Did The Frankfurt Parliament Fail
Why did the Frankfurt parliament fail? Throughout the 1840 s many German states were under
pressure from liberal demonstrators and nationalists who wanted a revolutionary change and greater
political representation. Those standing for a unified Germany recognised that a unified Germany with
a constitution and election would be the most efficient way of securing their political freedom.
However, German monarchs such as the king of Prussia, Frederick William IV feared that a united
Germany under nationalists conditions would cause Germany to lose its power and influence in their
land and territories. After the ferocious demonstration in not only Berlin in 1848 but also in other
states and nations, the king agreed to draft a prussian constitution ... Show more content on

The Frankfurt parliament failed to accomplish its goals, the attempt of creating a unified Germany
through political reform did not work as it was intended to. One can argue that there are multiple
reasons for why the parliament failed but the strength of the conservative forces, the divisions within
the parliament and its inability to make decisions were significant causes as to why the parliaments
weaknesses were overpowering and caused it to fail.
One of the contributing factors to the failure of the Frankfurt parliament was the divisions within the
parliament itself. The parliament was mainly built upon liberals in the middle class who happened to
be males that had to be1 of a certain age as well as being economically stable, i.e it did not represent
the people as a whole. This was a problem itself as only one of the classes was being represented,
leaving the other two omitted which arguably caused problems within and outside of the parliament.
The parliament arguably consisted of three different groups, the liberals who wanted to safeguard the
rights of the central government and the individual rights, the radicals who wanted to replace the
princes and form a unified republic and thirdly the conservatives who did not want the central
government or

To Believe or Not To Believe
Modern Urban Legends
Many people have heard the tale of the dotty grandmother who tried to dry off her damp poodle by
placing it in the microwave oven. The dog exploded, sad to say the least , and Grandma has never
been quite the same since. The story is not true; it is an urban legend, circulating by word of mouth
since the 1970s (Brunvand, 108). Urban legends are popular stories alleged to be true and transmitted
from person to person by oral or written communication. Legends tend to arise spontaneously and are
rarely traceable to a single point of origin. They spread primarily from individual to individual

The baby alligator gets sucked through the piping of the building and eventually ends up in the sewer
where it survives on eating rats and other garbage (Brown, 127). A person is more likely to believe the
tale if the storyteller gives them juicy details of a child they know getting chased by one while playing
in the disgusting muck, rather than saying they heard it in a coffee shop down the street. In the case of
a non cautionary legend, someone may believe the story just because it is humorous, and they are
completely amazed that such a thing has occurred.
The details of a good urban legend will keep the listener on the edge of his or her seat. quot;It is
human nature to want to spread this feeling to others, and be the one who s got everyone wanting to
hear how the story turns out quot; (Harris, 3). Even if it is a made up joke, they may want to
personalize it by claiming it happened to a friend. Another reason urban legends are so convincing is
the thought that the horrendous tale happened to a quot;friend of a friend. quot;
The life of an urban legend does rely mostly on the details contained within it to give the story the
interest it needs in order to be passed along to someone else, but there is something else that lies
underneath the success of the legend. Anyone can brush off a story from a

The Go Between By Ali Smith Summary
The Go Between is a short story, written by Ali Smith in 2009. This short story is based on the United
Nations adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ali Smith finds inspiration in an
article about the right to freedom of movement, which also is the theme and case in this short story.
Many people try to travel from Africa to the south of Europe, due to poverty, war or hunger. This short
story deals with the fact that everyone has their human rights, and they have the freedom of

Stop And Frisk Research Paper
Stop and frisk has two components that define the stop element as well as the frisk element. The stop
element is defined as when a law enforcement officer briefly detains an individual, and the officer has
reasonable suspicion to believe a crime has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur, and ask
questions of the individual regarding a preliminary investigation and excludes the requirement of
probable cause (Bethel, 2015). Furthermore, the frisk element may be conducted if the officer has
reasonable suspicion the individual has a weapon, and is performed as a limited pat down search of
the outer clothing on the individual detained by the officer (Bethel, 2015). If a weapon is discovered,
the officer is authorized to conduct a more in depth investigation. ... Show more content on

The same applications are among law enforcement agencies across the nation, however, every law
enforcement agency shares the same mission to protect and to serve it s jurisdiction. In my humble
opinion, the scope for stop and frisk is an essential part of law enforcement s goal of keeping their
communities safe and protecting the citizens and it s properties. Where there s smoke, there s more
than likely going to be a fire that started the smoke or a source of heat that initiated the smoke. The
bureaucratic red tape has smothered a substantial amount of police tactics in the last several years and
common sense allows us to notice a serious decrease in respect towards law enforcement as well as
limited actions law enforcement can apply to situations because they appear too militarized or
overkill. For example, it was due to stop and frisk that allowed an officer to stop and frisk a suspect
named Wayne Williams in Atlanta, Georgia, after the officer heard a splash in a river nearby and
observed Williams driving off a bridge that went over the waterway. The officer was able to initiate a
stop and frisk, that led to the discovery of a murdered victim and identified the suspect because of this
tactic (Marcou, 2010). This is only one of many incidents of how this tactic is critical for law
enforcement to apply towards their overall goal of keeping citizen s and their communities

He stands for a few seconds while holding his drink in his hand, while he and a attractive female

two gaze upon one another. He sits down, still having a complete sense of awareness of the female.
She beams at him and rubs her legs with her hands slowly as if to show him. Raising his glass as if to
cheer, the glass of tequila is fully visible to her specifically. With the boxing match in the camera

There are also legal reasons why companies must reconsider their use of animals in toxicity testing.
Within Europe, the cosmetics industry can no longer manufacture or market products that have

DNA Based Conviction Case Study
The first DNA based conviction in the United States occurred shortly after in 1987 when the Circuit
Court in Orange County, Florida, convicted Tommy Lee Andrews of rape after DNA tests matched his
DNA from a blood sample with that of semen traces found in a rape victim (Calandro, 2005). It was
two years later that DNA was again ruled admissible in a Virginia state ruling. In the years that
followed the use of DNA in trial proceeding was not disputed. It was not until the technique of
obtaining the evidence was more largely used did the practice become questionable.

Appearance In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row
People in our society are very arbitrary and judgmental, and will stereotype others based on their first
impressions. They look at their appearances and how they carry out their actions, and make
assumptions and judgments. However, these notions are usually false; Things are not always as they
appear. People s physical features, such their looks or their race, may not accurately exhibit the person
s true personality and identity. In this manner, the deceptive nature of appearance, is explored in two
novels: Cannery Row and Always Running. The first novel, John Steinbeck s Cannery Row, takes
place in a small and derelict town inhabited by bad mannered drunks and outcasts, who are constantly
judged for their outward appearances. However, underneath their shabby reputations are ... Show more

Society has low expectations for Chicanos, including those who are educated and disciplined, and the

contradict and disprove society s stereotypes and prejudices. In this way, the theme of Appearance

that in a judgemental society, certain individuals will eventually rise above and overcome some of
society s stereotypes and labels. A close view of the way that Mack and the boys, one of the
protagonists of Cannery Row , and Luis Rodriguez, the protagonist of Always Running, give back to
the people in their community, exemplifies the act of individuals overcoming some of society s

My Mother Pieced Quilts Summary
Our heritage and ideals, our hieroglyphics and manual to live, the things we fulfil we teach our
children. Are preserved and carried on or they parrish along with our identity. There are two passages

her mother and that she struggled and strived to where she is today. According to Teresa Palomo you

Comparing The Trial And Death Of Socrates
Plato s The Trial and Death of Socrates presents the reader with complex competing conceptions of
what should be considered the good life . According to Socrates, the most important thing is not life,
but the good life (Crito, 48b). The majority, who live a non philosophical life, believes the goods of
life include wealth, reputation, and honor: all things that can easily be taken away or destroyed. On the
other hand, Socrates lives a philosophical life filled with self sufficiency. He views wisdom, truth, and
the best possible state of one s soul as the goods of life. The plot in The Trial and Death of Socrates
arises as Socrates challenges the minds of those around him. After being accused of corrupting the
young and of not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other new spiritual things ,
Socrates faces the death penalty (Apology, 24b c). The challenge the reader faces within The Trial and
Death of Socrates stands as deciding rather the philosophical or non philosophical life serves as the
flourishing life. In The Trial and Death of Socrates, the majority serves as the embodiment of the non
philosophical life. A flourishing life, according to the majority, revolves around the eagerness to
possess as much wealth, reputation, and honors as possible (Apology, 29e). Each of these attributes
are known to bring individuals greater freedom within society. With greater freedom comes greater
opportunity, hence a greater life, thereby making these goods

Why Did The Glass Not Fit In The Picture Frame Right Away
1. Why did the glass not fit in the picture frame right away? Explain what you did to solve the issue in
detail? The glass didn t fit in mine at the start because the wood wasn t even to the other pieces of
wood. So in doing this I had to go to the miter saw and fix the angle and cut off the wood that made it
like that. Another reason why the glass didn t fit is because when the pieces of wood wasn t clamped
and it wasn t together tightly leaving gaps in the spaces between the wood, when this happened I had
to sand it better and see if I had to cut anything extra off. Also the lip holding the glass was too small
so, this made me have to fix and make the cut bigger. 2. What other issues did you run into and how
did you go about solving them? Some things that I ran into was the fact that I had to fix the cutting
because one piece was bigger than the other and the fact that I had to sand some excess pieces that the

my four best friends. It was Erick, Jeff, Brady, and Trevor. We made food and watched movies and
talked where we were going hunting tomorrow. By midnight, we d run out of things to do. We were so
bored. Let s try that Bloody Mary thing, Trevor said. Erick, was sitting crossed legged on his sleeping
bag, said, What s the Bloody Mary thing? Brady, who was laying on top of his own sleeping bag on
the far side of the room, said: Come on, Erick. everyone knows the Bloody Mary thing! You stand in
front of the bathroom mirror with a lighted candle and say the Mary s name three times. Then her
ghost appears, looking just the way she did when she died; all horrible and bloody with scars all over
her face! . She sounds gorgeous. Just why, exactly, do you think I would want to see the ghost of
Bloody Mary? Erick asked. Why not? I said from my spot on the air mattress in the living room. I ve
always wanted to see a ghost! It could be fun. Besides, I ve heard she can tell your future if you
summon her correctly. And if you don t summon her correctly, or if she s in a bad mood, the ghost of
Bloody Mary will rip your eyes out and leave your face horribly scarred, Jeff said dramatically. Or
you will be found dead with claw marks all over your face and body. Or you could be trapped in the

As the most giant super power in the world, almost everything happened in the United States has some
kinds of influence in the world. The American Revolution is definitely one of the most important
historical event in the history of the United States because its foundation of the idea of this country.
But behind the bright side of the main stream idea of the public, there are also dark sides in the
Revolution such as the bloody battle and the wealth growing of the minor elite. In this paper, I am not
going to admire the great achievement of the American Revolution nor criticize the bloody and dirty

history, Everything happened during and after the American Revolution is just a nature of human
being.
American Revolution was bloody and cruel, just like all other great revolutions in the history.
Besides the so called ideas carrying for the revolution like liberty and democracy, the Revolution
brought a bloody battle to everyone to the people in this land during that time, not only to the enemies,
but also to the people were supposed to be innocent.

Tea Plantation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh produces and exports a large quantity of high quality tea. Most of the tea plantations are
situated in the northeastern areas of the country, around Sylhet and Srimongal. Sylhet is situated close
to Bangladesh s border with the Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam. This part of the country is
covered by hillocks rising to moderate heights. The rainfall is higher than average, a fact which British
tea planters realised in the 18th century to the advantage of tea cultivation. These conditions have
provided rich tropical forests with many species of wildlife, scented orange groves and pineapple
plantations. It is also the home of Khashia and Monipuri tribals.
The waterfalls of Madhab Kunda are another very picturesque place to visit. Jafflong, where the river
runs along the border between Bangladesh and India is especially beautiful. On the way there are
number of haors or marshy wetlands, which are natural, depressed swamps holding water almost the
whole year round. They are home to many fish and thousands of local and migratory birds.

Once A Friend
My laughter is empty and hollow
My feelings are wrecked within and often, feigned
Wounded by sheer agony not so shallow
So much so that my breathing is strained
T was a tale of two carefree and mirthful souls
Walking on a bed of roses in delight
Before they knew it, it evolved into strolls
Nearing a dismal end nowhere in sight
Tearing in painful joy and deep despair
Those bittersweet memories reach a dead end
A relationship I cannot repair
And this dreadful kiss of death, was once a friend
The haunting past I can never mend
She was once a friend, my very own friend

Once A Friend
This poem is about losing a friend. Without her friend, the speaker is deprived of happiness. Even
when the speaker laughs or smiles, it is faked. The speaker was affected so much that breathing
became a burden. Initially, they were elated but soon, it turned into a path with a bitter end. Kiss of
death is a phrase, which refers to something that causes failure. The turn at the ending couplet shows
the speaker s reflection that there is no point in feeling nostalgic, as she cannot change the past.
I Can See You From Up Here
This poem is about a dead person requesting for her loved one not to cry by claiming that she is not
dead. The speaker is trying to assure her loved one that she is always watching her from above. The
speaker objectifies herself as the clouds, birds, sun and stars as they are high in the sky, where Heaven
is thought to be. In the 5th stanza, the speaker states, suffered but in delight , as she suffered but since
she does not want her loved one to cry, she tells that she is delighted. The speaker also advises her
loved one not to revisit the past by retaining

your grocery list, the food you make, how your writing looks, and the way you feel. Life is art. Helena

the word aesthetic . The word aesthetic lacks usage and is absent in the vocabulary of various people I

The Cause that Led to the Beginning of the Peloponnesian War
Ancient Greece during 4th Century BC was home to the city states of Sparta and Athens, who during
this time were the superpowers of the region. The Peloponnesian war between these city states and
their respective allies lasted from 431 404 BC, although conflicts between the two had dated back
further. Major fighting in the war occurred from 431 421 and ended in Athenian victory. However,
renewed conflict raged between 413 and 404 which resulted in Spartan victory.
The Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta evolved from a string of events which I am going
to look at to see if there was a single cause for this war.

Although Potidaea was a member of the Delian League, Athens and her allies, it had maintained the
right to receive magistrates from its mother city every year. Tired of paying tribute to Athens and
resentful of Athenian rule the citizens of Potidaea supported a revolt to expel Athenian power.
Both sides sent forces to Potidaea and once again Athenians were battling with Corinthians. Due to
aiding the people of Potidaea, Corinth faced an embargo by Athens which enraged Sparta. Any
appeals to Athens to stop the embargo were ignored, forcing the Spartans to coviene the
Peloponnesian council and lead the two cities one more step closer to war.
Thucydides wrote the growth of the power of Athens and the alarm which this inspired (in Sparta)
made war inevitable. This comment shows another element that contributed to the cause of the
Peloponnesian war.
After the Persian wars, there was a development of Athenian control when the Delian league was

The Effects Of Transportation In The Rocky Horror Picture...
Have you ever been so engrossed in a movie that you felt like you were one of the characters? Star
Wars fans are a prime example of this phenomenon. Many fans flock to the theater wearing costumes.
Another example that may help identify transportation is the audience participation in the movie, The
Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fans would not only dress as one of the characters, but they would
interact with props while the moving was being played. Being so engaged in a movie makes one feel
as if they have been transported into the place they are watching. According to the article,
Transportation Across Media: Repeated Exposure to Print and Film, Transportation has three main
components: cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, and mental imagery. The self report
transportation scale includes items tapping each of these dimensions, but prior research with the scale
suggests that all three aspects combine to produce transportation effects (Green Brock, 2000). (Media
Psychology, 2008) The idea of one being able to feel as if they are transported into another world may
seem absurd to some, but the reality is we all enjoy movies because it somehow sends our minds to
another world for a short time. It helps us temporarily forget our daily stressors. Need for cognition is
the tendency to enjoy and engage in effortful cognitive activity (Cacioppo Petty, 1982). (Media
Psychology, 2008) The effect of transportation is apparent in watching someone play video games.

Capitalism And Feudalism
Marx and Engels suggested that the bourgeois revolution destroyed everything that was once held
sacred because people had to give up their dreams, passions, and occupations in order to provide for
themsel The alienation of labor added insult to injury because workers were forced to sell themselves
into slavery.
The destruction of the feudalism, and the industrial revolution was what created capitalism. During the
19 century, the industrial revolution had allowed the once impoverished to become obtain wealth
through manufacturing and creating jobs, which created new oppressors. The workers that they
employed were alienated because they could afford the products they made while working harsh hours
in horrible conditions. Which lead Marx to create the Communist Manifesto, which divided people
into two classes: the property owners (Bourgeoisie) and the workers (proletariat) . He did this because
felt pity for the workers and wanted to go back to simpler times and knew industrial societies were
developed enough to have a workers revolution. This had led revolutions because the people he called
the proletariat were outraged and wanted a better standard of living. Thus, leading to future
revolutions throughout the world.
To understand how capitalism started must first know what feudalism was. Feudalism was a medieval
hierarchal power structure of King s, Nobles Knights, Peasants , and Serfs etc. The King ruled what
was known as divine rights of kings. The king s rule was

Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Dr. Henry Jekyll in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) seems to be an enthusiastic

story to Captain Walton, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is narrated by different points of
view, mainly from lawyer Utterson, a close friend of Jekyll and in charge of executing Jekyll s last

the end, he is a split person, one half is represented by Jekyll and the other one by Hyde. Stevenson

There s Tension, But Why?
All you have to do is turn on the t.v. and you can tell there s a lot of racial tension, it has always been
there, but now there s one difference, the media. The media is playing a huge role in the tension

people making it worse, would the media play a role in this too? Have there been groups like this in
the past? So what community does have the spotlight right now?
Right now most of the spotlight lies mostly on the black community. The spotlight lies on the
community, for the reason that a lot of tension is being aroused around the recent police shootings.
You see the majority of the tension is created through the argument that police shoot more black
Americans that white. But, according to The Washington Post there were 991 people shot and killed

being directed toward the use of holistic medicines. Naturalistic and holistic methods are receiving
positive criticisms leading to an increase in the attention it is being granted them from multiple fields
of study. Due to the positive effects often observed as a result of such therapies, as well as their lack of
negative side effects, therapies that exclude the use of chemical medicines and focus on natural
healing are gaining international popularity. With media s current emphasis on physical fitness, society

The Sixth Extinction Reflection
Summer Reading Reflection
I read The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert over this summer. It was a thoughtful book that made
me more aware of mother nature as well as the declining environmental health. Basically, the author
handled its large, weighty ideas by comparing the current environmental issues with the past five
major episodes of mass extinction. Nowadays, the world s undergoing a sixth mass extinction period,
with humans as the driving factor. In short, industrialization and globalization have ushered in a new
epoch in Earth s history. People are significantly altering the Earth s land, ocean, atmosphere, and life
in a way that no other creature has ever managed. A number of recent studies shed light on the
devastating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the book, the extinctions are occurring in all branches. A third of all reef building corals
are endangered. So are a third of all freshwater mollusks, a third of sharks and rays, a quarter of all
mammals, a fifth of all reptiles, and a sixth of all birds. Human activities have compromised the
oceans, the original source of life and home still to much of the earth s plant and animal life. Logging,
converting forestland to other uses, and human induced climate change were exterminating whole
species of trees as well as the plants and animals they sustained. It seems true that Earth is a big place,
but size isn t everything. The planet s richest ecosystems are in rapid decline, forcing us to
acknowledge that countless creatures worldwide are running out of room. We should definitely do
something to avert the first man made mass extinction.
Globalization is another big topic came to my mind after reading this book. There are certain
advantages that globalization bring us, such as faster access to technology, improved communication
and innovation. Apart from playing a key role in bringing people of various backgrounds together, it
has ushered a new era in the economic prosperity and has opened up vast channels of development.
However, globalization also created some areas of concern, and prominent among these is the impact
that it has had on the environment. In

The Awakening by Kate Chopin Essay
The Awakening by Kate Chopin Kate Chopin is one of the first female writers to address female
issues, primarily sexuality. Chopin declares that women are capable of overt sexuality in which they
explore and enjoy their sexuality. Chopin shows that her women are capable of loving more than one
man at a time. They are not only attractive but sexually attracted (Ziff 148). Two of Chopin s stories
that reflect this attitude of sexuality are The Awakening and one of her short stories The Storm .
Although critics now acclaim these two stories as great accomplishments, Chopin has been
condemned during her life for writing such vulgar and risqué pieces. In 1899 Chopin publishes The
Awakening. She is censured for its positively unseemly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first way in which Chopin is able to portray an awakening by Edna is through her relationship
with her husband, Leonce. Chopin describes Leonce as a likable guy. He is a successful businessman,
popular with his friends, and devotes himself to Edna and the children (Spangler 154). Although Edna
s marriage to Leonce is purely and accident , he pleases her and his absolute devotion flattered her
(Chopin 506). However, it is clearly obvious to the reader the Leonce acts as the oppressor of Edna
(Allen 72). When the reader first sees them together, Leonce is looking at his wife as a valuable piece
of personal property which has suffered some damage (Chopin 494). The most important aspect to
Leonce is making money and showing off his wealth. He believes his wife s role to be caring for him
and his children. Therefore, the first step toward her freedom is to be free of his rule. Edna is able to
accomplish this first by denying Leonce the submissiveness which he is accustomed to. She does this
by abandoning her Tuesday visitors, she makes no attempt to keep an organized household, and she
comes and goes as she pleases (Chopin 536). The next big step in gaining her freedom from her
husband is when she moves into a house of her own while Leonce is away taking of business. She
does not even wait to see what his opinion of the matter is (Chopin 558). It is quite evident the only
thing Leonce worries about is what people are going to

Sexism In The Barbie
Barbie Barbie is portraying the image on young girls to have the desire to look and be like her. When
girls at such a young age begin to play with Barbie they are seeing how perfect she looks. Barbie s
disproportional figure leads children and even teens to want her beautiful look that they have admired
for so many years. In 1965 the slumber party package was on the market showing buyers how straight
forward she is with her products and accessories. The package had all of the normal slumber party
things like a robe, comb, and hair rollers but it also had a weight scale set at a permanent weight of
110 and a disturbing book on weight loss that read in all caps, DON T EAT. This package is an
example of how misleading Barbie and her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The GI Joe doll portrays the image of a man in the military. He dresses in camouflage and carries
around guns. Wagner Ott describes the GI Joe doll as a ...butch version of Barbie with the same
realism and detail, but applied to the toy soldier concept (249). Considering Barbie s beautiful looks
and countless perfect accessories, the GI Joe doll can relate to her. He has defined muscles, a smooth
tan, and all of his accessories fit him perfectly. These two dolls display sexist attitudes in many ways.
Barbie only moves in five different places, her neck, shoulders, and top of her legs, whereas, GI Joe
can move in twenty one different places. This shows that the male doll can be more active and mobile
but the female doll is restricted to a perfect posture and cannot do much outside. Because dolls and
action figures are emotionally close to children s lives, they can become the source for discovering
and analyzing how popular everyday objects help construct students sense of identity, politics and
culture (Wagner Ott, 252). Children are beginning to see these dolls like Barbie and GI Joe and want
everything they have and grow up to look exactly like

Imposing Affirmative Action in El Paso Essay
Imposing Affirmative Action in El Paso Have you ever applied for a job knowing that you are more
than qualified for the position? But somehow you remain overlooked by someone who is bilingual,
and perhaps less qualified. Well I have, predominantly here in El Paso. El Paso, a city constantly
growing with more: schools, hospitals, and jobs; Where many have flourished in these endeavors.
However people who are not bilingual seems to be excluded in these opportunities. But instead of
remaining unemployed; The city should enforce Affirmative Action so that many non bilingual, and
minorities in El Paso have as many opportunities as those native to the city. One thing El Paso does
not lack is Diversity. El Paso has a population of 672,538 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also military spouses from Japan, Germany, Korea, and all over whom does not even speak English;
find themselves in a bind. Military spouses in El Paso find themselves depending on one source of
income, which may not be adequate. With only one source of income, the working spouse feels the
financial burden. Although being bilingual is an advantage for an employer, by enforcing Affirmative
Action many of the people who would normally be disregarded for being deficient in Spanish would
finally have opportunities for desired positions. With applicants depending on being bilingual for jobs,
affirmative action will force employers to focus on education, certifications, and diplomas. With
focusing on credentials, and not language; Employers will hire those suitable for the job. Also, this
allows bilingual to not only have language, but the necessary credentials for the job. With having
bilinguals with credentials leaves room for translations for those who do not speak the necessary
language. With depending on each other for information, bilinguals, and non bilinguals would have to
learn to communicate efficiently, and create a balanced work environment. With being a diverse place
El Paso needs to enforce Affirmative Action for those desperately finding jobs, and deficient in
Spanish. Affirmative Action will not only benefit those deficient in Spanish, but also the minorities in
El Paso. Because of Hispanic,

  • 2. Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal Controversy Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal I would first like to begin this paper by saying why I decide to chose this topic out of the 3 choices. I believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason this one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It s hard to believe that someone could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi scheme was notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after his scandal created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The fact that this happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me extremely concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up to the scandal, the scandal itself, the people involved in the scandal, the legislation and regulations implemented after the scandal, and my views on the outcome of the scandal. Bernard Madoff was born April 29th, 1928 in Queens, New York. He grew up as a son of two Jewish parents, one of which was a stockbroker. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 with a degree in Political Science and then moved on to attend Brooklyn Law School where he dropped out to start and pursue his own company, Bernard L. For a healthy person, nutrition is taken into the body as easily as breathing in air. If a patient is in need of a feeding tube to stay alive is it ethical to not place the tube and let them die? It is devastating to families when a tragedy occurs and their loved one can no longer sustain what was once a simple bodily function, such as eating or drinking. Now, the decision must be made to either keep them alive via feeding tube, or allow them to pass on. In Leopold s essay titled The Land Ethic he makes several great points. Among these I have found the community concept, substitutes for a land ethic and the future outlook to be the most important. Leopold states, All ethics so far evolved rest upon a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts (p.2). Normally if we get a really nice gift we treasure it and do our best to protect it. This is the same mindset that we need to have about our land. Secondly, we do need to recognize that we have dominion over the Earth. God created us to take care of the Earth. In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth and then he created man to be stewards of it. It is important not to get to crazy and do things to harm the Earth but we must also remain healthy. Humans come before the land and they always should. One of the contributing factors to the failure of the Frankfurt parliament was the divisions within the parliament itself. The parliament was mainly built upon liberals in the middle class who happened to be males that had to be1 of a certain age as well as being economically stable, i.e it did not represent the people as a whole. The stop element is defined as when a law enforcement officer briefly detains an individual, and the officer has reasonable suspicion to believe a crime has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur, and ask questions of the individual regarding a preliminary investigation and excludes the requirement of probable cause (Bethel, 2015). Furthermore, the frisk element may be conducted if the officer has reasonable suspicion the individual has a weapon, and is performed as a limited pat down search of the outer clothing on the individual detained by the officer (Bethel, 2015). They look at their appearances and how they carry out their actions, and make assumptions and judgments. However, these notions are usually false; Things are not always as they appear. People s physical features, such their looks or their race, may not accurately exhibit the person s true personality and identity. In this manner, the deceptive nature of appearance, is explored in two novels: Cannery Row and Always Running. • 23. Comparing The Trial And Death Of Socrates Plato s The Trial and Death of Socrates presents the reader with complex competing conceptions of what should be considered the good life . According to Socrates, the most important thing is not life, but the good life (Crito, 48b). The majority, who live a non philosophical life, believes the goods of life include wealth, reputation, and honor: all things that can easily be taken away or destroyed. On the other hand, Socrates lives a philosophical life filled with self sufficiency. He views wisdom, truth, and the best possible state of one s soul as the goods of life. The plot in The Trial and Death of Socrates arises as Socrates challenges the minds of those around him. After being accused of corrupting the young and of not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other new spiritual things , Socrates faces the death penalty (Apology, 24b c). The challenge the reader faces within The Trial and Death of Socrates stands as deciding rather the philosophical or non philosophical life serves as the flourishing life. In The Trial and Death of Socrates, the majority serves as the embodiment of the non philosophical life. A flourishing life, according to the majority, revolves around the eagerness to possess as much wealth, reputation, and honors as possible (Apology, 29e). The glass didn t fit in mine at the start because the wood wasn t even to the other pieces of wood. So in doing this I had to go to the miter saw and fix the angle and cut off the wood that made it like that. Another reason why the glass didn t fit is because when the pieces of wood wasn t clamped and it wasn t together tightly leaving gaps in the spaces between the wood, when this happened I had to sand it better and see if I had to cut anything extra off. Also the lip holding the glass was too small so, this made me have to fix and make the cut bigger. 2. What other issues did you run into and how did you go about solving them? Chopin declares that women are capable of overt sexuality in which they explore and enjoy their sexuality. Chopin shows that her women are capable of loving more than one man at a time. They are not only attractive but sexually attracted (Ziff 148). Two of Chopin s stories that reflect this attitude of sexuality are The Awakening and one of her short stories The Storm . Although critics now acclaim these two stories as great accomplishments, Chopin has been condemned during her life for writing such vulgar and risqué pieces. In 1899 Chopin publishes The Awakening. The first way in which Chopin is able to portray an awakening by Edna is through her relationship with her husband, Leonce. Chopin describes Leonce as a likable guy. He is a successful businessman, popular with his friends, and devotes himself to Edna and the children (Spangler 154). Although Edna s marriage to Leonce is purely and accident , he pleases her and his absolute devotion flattered her (Chopin 506). However, it is clearly obvious to the reader the Leonce acts as the oppressor of Edna (Allen 72). When the reader first sees them together, Leonce is looking at his wife as a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage (Chopin 494). The most important aspect to Leonce is making money and showing off his wealth. He believes his wife s role to be caring for him and his children. Therefore, the first step toward her freedom is to be free of his rule. Edna is able to accomplish this first by denying Leonce the submissiveness which he is accustomed to. She does this by abandoning her Tuesday visitors, she makes no attempt to keep an organized household, and she comes and goes as she pleases (Chopin 536). The next big step in gaining her freedom from her husband is when she moves into a house of her own while Leonce is away taking of business. She does not even wait to see what his opinion of the matter is (Chopin 558). It is quite evident the only thing Leonce worries about is what people are going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When girls at such a young age begin to play with Barbie they are seeing how perfect she looks. Barbie s disproportional figure leads children and even teens to want her beautiful look that they have admired for so many years. In 1965 the slumber party package was on the market showing buyers how straight forward she is with her products and accessories. The package had all of the normal slumber party things like a robe, comb, and hair rollers but it also had a weight scale set at a permanent weight of 110 and a disturbing book on weight loss that read in all caps, DON T EAT. This package is an example of how misleading Barbie and her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The GI Joe doll portrays the image of a man in the military. He dresses in camouflage and carries around guns. Wagner Ott describes the GI Joe doll as a ...butch version of Barbie with the same realism and detail, but applied to the toy soldier concept (249). Considering Barbie s beautiful looks and countless perfect accessories, the GI Joe doll can relate to her. He has defined muscles, a smooth tan, and all of his accessories fit him perfectly. These two dolls display sexist attitudes in many ways. Barbie only moves in five different places, her neck, shoulders, and top of her legs, whereas, GI Joe can move in twenty one different places. This shows that the male doll can be more active and mobile but the female doll is restricted to a perfect posture and cannot do much outside. Because dolls and action figures are emotionally close to children s lives, they can become the source for discovering and analyzing how popular everyday objects help construct students sense of identity, politics and culture (Wagner Ott, 252). Children are beginning to see these dolls like Barbie and GI Joe and want everything they have and grow up to look exactly like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
