Archetypes In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men And La Strada

Honors English 10
3 December 2017 Archetypal Comparison Of Mice and Men and La Strada Archetypes can vary dramatically through out
books, movies and similar works of entertainment. However some writers or directors may have the same kind of
archetypes but present them in different ways. In the book Of Mice and Men and the film La Strada archetypes such as
grotesques, the journey, as well as social hierarchy are present through out the entirety of each work to convey a larger more
profound meaning. John Steinbeck, author of Of Men and Men, and Federico Fellini, director of La Strada, use similar
archetypal to convey their own intention for their works. The use of grotesques in both works takes form in the characters
Lennie and Gelsomina. Each of the two characters suffers from their own flaw that separates them from being seen as
normal characters. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck conveys Lennie to be a man caught between civilization and nature.
Through out the book he is never mentally stable enough to be apart of civilization. As seen in chapter one he ...flung
himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool; with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. (Steinbeck.
3) he acts like a wild animal incapable of a logical thought process. Lennie only ever sees things in the moment and does not
think of the repercussions that his actions could warrant after the fact. This erratic behavior

Schindler s List Steven Spielberg
Schindler s List
How has Steven Spielberg used film techniques to make the viewer feel more involved?
Introduction: The film Schindler s List is based on a book called Schindler s Ark, written by the Australian novelist Thomas
Keneally. It follows Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) a rich German businessman as he devotes his life to saving as many
refugees as possible, most of them being Jewish Polish. He does this by employing them in his factories, where they make
pots, pans and later on in the film faulty ammunition for the German Nazi military. Oscar employed more than 500 people
for several years costing him all of his savings, apart from a few dollars and a golden pin, desperately trying to spare their
lives.

The first being a dripping fire hydrant only metres away from the dying Jews. They are cramped into such a small, dry, hot
space with no water and only short distance away water is being wasted. This shows how uncaring and cruel the Nazis were,
it would have been of little effort to them to give the Jewish people water however it was more enjoyable to watch them
suffer. Spielberg used a number of close ups on the suffering Jewish people. This shows the audience how little room they
have are and how mistreated they are by the Nazis. The final important camera technique is the zoom along the length of
hose. This has been used to enphasize the lengths that Schindler will go to in order help the jewish people. Spielberg uses
camera angles and techniques to create a greater impact for the audience and also to help portray his message. These camera
angles in this scene are used throughout the whole movie, showing the lengths Schindler will go to in order to give them
water we can see that he will go to even greater lengths to save their

This organization was started in 1974, by the Economics Affairs Bureau Inc., with the mission to challenge mainstream

Human Moralism In Dante s Inferno
Dante s Research Paper
In Dante s Inferno, Dante the pilgrim is given the opportunity to take a journey through hell. Dante is at first a coward and is
afraid to take the journey but then Virgil, his guide, convinces him to come on the journey. During this time Dante takes
advantage of his opportunity to humiliate his enemies and proves to himself he was right about society. One of the sinners
he sees on his journey is Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus and ended up committing suicide over his guilt. In comparison
to Judas, Adolf Hitler committed a similar crime;, he killed millions of innocent people for their beliefs because he did not
agree with them, betrayed his country, and committed suicide. Rosa Parks, on the other hand, uses human reasoning like
Virgil does in The Inferno. Rosa Parks uses what she knows about how people tend to act and took necessary action to prove
her point. By comparing the judgments of Adolf Hitler and Rosa Parks to the judgment in Dante s Inferno, it shows that the
unfair treatment of the minority in society an absolute standard of human morality over time has not changed, based on how
the majority believes some mistreat others who believe and act differently in society, and that this advantage is a right,
specifically those who are different deserve to be treated unfairly.
The story of Adolf Hitler, 1889 1945, shows another example how the treatment of others the minority in society an absolute
standard of human morality over time has not changed based on how the majority believes some mistreat others who believe
and act differently in society, and that this advantage is a right, specifically those who are different deserve to be treated
unfairly. As a child, Hitler was a troublemaker his sister describes his personally saying: He was a scrubby little rogue, Paula
said of her brother, and all attempts of his father to thrash him for his rudeness. . .were in vain (Rosenwald). But Adolf s
mother, Klara, was always there to care for him. His father Alois died in 1903 of heart failure, and Klara his mother became
a single mother, tolerating, seemingly without question, her unruly and headstrong son. But then Klara fell sick., Adolf cared

The Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos And The Acropolis
There are a number of art and architectural features found in the Athenian Agora, Kerimeikos and the Acropolis. The Agora
or market place has a number of buildings such as the Tholos, The Eponymous Heroes and the Strategion. The Kerimeikos
or Ceramicus was the potters quarter of the city, from which the word ceramic is derived, and was also the site of an
important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures erected around the area. The Acropolis had many major buildings, the
most prominent of them being the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. An evaluation of primary and secondary
literary sources gives insight into the main purposes of the buildings and the art within such as pottery and sculptures found
within the context of these sites. To an extent the art and architecture in these sites reflect the significant cultural practices
and beliefs of the ancient Athenians as it gives insight into what they truly valued.
The Athenian Agora had a number of features in its differing buildings and along with their features they had a largely
unique purpose. The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes was described as by Susanne as a Marble podium that bore the
bronze statues of the ten heroes representing the tribes of Athens . As said by Suzanne the appearance of the monument
represented the 10 tribes of Athens after the reforms of Cleisthenes assigning the citizens of Athens into 10 tribes. These

19th Century American Whisky Essay
Whisky is believed to be first created over 8,000 years ago, but is now synonymously known with Scottish history. It is also
known as one the world s most admired spirits to date. Whisky s distillation process dates back to Mesopotamia when the
Babylonians were initially creating perfumes and aromas, and travelled vastly throughout the ancient civilizations with new
variations and developments. In the 15th century, the art of distillation spread through the United Kingdom, especially in
Ireland and Scotland in the monasteries. With the dissolve of monasteries by King Henry VIII of England, forced the monks
to not only perfect the art of distillation, but the art of smuggling due to the punitive taxes imposed on unlicensed breweries.
In the United States, whisky was used as a method of currency during the American Revolution, but later became taxed by

Special Needs Case Study
Through the line of special needs cases, the Supreme Court has created an exception to the broad principle that a search
requires a warrant. Special needs arise when there is a compelling government interest that allows for the warrantless search
of ordinary citizens. These searches involve groups who maintain substantial expectations of privacy: the public at large, or
classes of law abiding citizens. The government interest must go beyond normal law enforcement. For example, inspections
to ensure residents are in compliance with ordinance codes are exempted. In Martinez Fuerte, the Court extended the special
needs exception to include warrantless searches of cars within one hundred miles of the United States Mexico border

The Jungle And Fast Food Nation Rhetorical Analysis
Relevant literature usually addresses real life situations, bringing light to serious issues. Most of the time, an author will
write in hopes to influence others to believe a certain way. Authors must strategize to master the art of persuasion. There are
multiple appeals a writer may use in order to get their point across to the audience. The Jungle and Fast Food Nation use
ethos, pathos, and logos in efforts to gain support towards their purpose of improving the work conditions and quality of life
for immigrants. In order to convince an audience through an ethical appeal, a writer would use ethos. Ethos places an
emphasis on the credibility of the source. In The Jungle Upton Sinclair writes, In the beginning he had been fresh and
strong, and he had gotten a job the first day, but now he was second hand, a damaged article... (Sinclair 90). Jurgis, Sinclair
s character, goes from adoring capitalism to despising it. Since he proves to be open minded, his feelings seem less biased.
Once the reader observes the vicious cycle Jurgis endures, it becomes difficult to make an argument against him. In Fast
Food Nation Schlosser states, We are human beings, more than one person told me, but they treat us like animals (Schlosser
169). Instead of just using a single source, Schlosser uses numerous. The fact that the author is collecting stories from
several different people makes the account more believable. When an author is pulling at the heartstrings of the

The And The Bill Of Rights Essay
The two sources of rights and fundamental principles found in the United States legal system as outlined by the text.
Liberties and Rights what are the different between the two. Both of these words are in the Declaration of Independences
and the Bill of Rights. These two words always been blurred, when it comes to their distinction. However, in today laws the
words used interchangeable. However, they do example two different kinds of guaranteed protections. Supreme Court Judge
Felix Frankfurter stated that It s is a fair summary of Constitutional history that landmarks of our liberties have often been
forged in case involving not very nice people (UShistory.org, 2016). Civil liberties are political liberties that give you
protections against government actions (USHistory.org, 2016). Like, the Bill of Rights First Amendment. Freedom of
religion, which gives people the right to practices whatever religion they like. Government, than, cannot interfere (Handler,
1994). Therefore, the First Amendment gives people liberty from the actions of the government stepping in. Civil Rights are
all the rights the law gives a person. Constitutional or Statutory guaranties against discrimination due to race, religion,
national origin, gender, age, or disability (Handler, 1994). The way government try to counterbalances this right are the
majority rule but it is funny how democracy it often finds minorities out voted. Most people feel that civil rights and

Theme Of Being Mortal
Being Mortal and its Consequences
1. Introduction
In Being Mortal, Atul Gawande uses his experiences as a surgeon, professor and public health professional to discuss many
facets of Western end of life care and the process of growing old in a modern age. Overall, I have found that three
overpowering themes in this novel are security versus autonomy, a need for pragmatism surrounding the concept of death,
and our medicalized society s devaluation of hospice and palliative care. Regarding these themes, I have chosen to reflect on
my grandparents, death in the West and social role valorization, respectively.
2. Security Versus Autonomy An especially relevant theme to Gawande s Being Mortal is the spectrum of security versus
autonomy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personally, the importance of one s freedom in life is drawn upon by the lives of my grandparents. Although my maternal
grandmother and grandfather are 75 and 77 years of age, respectively, they continue to live fulfilling and productive lives. It
is not to be said that they have not suffered from problems related to aging, such as my grandfather suffering from severe
arthritis, but they value their freedom to continue living their own lives more than anything. The true worth of their ability to
write their own stories is most evident in the fact that they are motivated to continue to write them throughout old age.
3. A Need for Pragmatism in the Face of Death As mentioned in a Frontline interview with Gawande about Being Mortal,
life s two unfixables are aging ang dying ( Dr. Atul Gawande On Aging, Dying And Being Mortal ). Despite this well known
fact, most physicians and patients alike are overwhelmed by the concept of death. Moreover, in times of medical crisis,
terminally ill patients allow themselves to be given the medical equivalent of lottery tickets in the hopes of making a
miraculous recovery (Gawande 171). The allowance of end of life decisions to be controlled by the concepts of medicine or
technology is a dangerous path which shows a lack in pragmatism regarding death (Sinclair). Although the overall

Rape and Intimate Partner Abuse In The Lesbian Community...
In every 45 seconds, someone is sexually violated in the United States. Out of every 6 women, one has experienced an
attempted rape or complete rape. Lesbians and bisexual women remain at increased risk of sexual victimization compared to
heterosexual women. In order for a woman to determine the direction of her life, she must first determine her sexuality.
Sexuality is a deep, integral part of any human s life. This should not be a subject of coercion or debate. The society must
recognize that a woman has the right to freely pre determine her sexuality without oppression and discrimination (Burn,

Women neither become lesbians due to shortage of men nor because they were abused by men. Lesbians, just like women in
heterosexual relationships are subjected to physical, sexual and verbal abuse by their partners. Abusive dominating partner
may subject the partner to emotional, physical and psychological abuse. The notion that a woman does not possess the
strength or aggressiveness possessed by men is wrong and misplaced. Cases of lesbians being abused by their partners have
been reported in the United States and other parts of the world including South Africa. Studies on domestic violence have
been carried out for decades. In recent years, scholars have been paying attention to domestic violence in the context of non

that societies in which friendships and relationships are void of men are protected from the natural control and power men

composed of two women, then a kind of default egalitarianism is naturally created. Such a myth encourages the delusion

Cross Country Oodgeroo Noonuccal Poem Analysis
Cross Country: A Book Of Australian Verse second edition was published in 1988. Edited by John Barnes and Brian
McFarlane. It contains a comprehensible and thought provoking selection of Australian poetry from the early years of
European settlement to the present. A common thread that connects numerous poems in the Cross Country anthology is the
contrast between what the past was and what it is now. This is shown through the loss of aboriginal culture and past times.
Each poem expresses a different scenario or memory about the loss of indigenous culture and how the past was a noble past,
as compared to the present. Oodgeroo Noonuccal s We are Going, portrays the deep feelings of loss shown through the
poem towards the aboriginal culture. The poem is written from a straightforward point of view that is easy to decipher. As
the poem progresses it goes through what the aboriginal community has lost because of the settlers and how they are
strangers to their land, we are as strangers here now, but the white tribe are the strangers . Noonuccal begins the elegy in the

How Did The Enlightenment Influence Russian Government
Influences of the Enlightenment and Napoleonic France on Russia, Egypt and the Ottoman Empire
In the nineteenth century, leaders of Russia, Egypt and the Ottoman Empire looked to the seventeenth and eighteenth
century philosophies of the European Enlightenment and Napoleonic France as guides for building a modern state. They
emulated military strength and thriving academic and agricultural institutions, as well as a direct relationship between the
general population and national authority figures. In Russia, Tsar Nicholas looked to the principle of democracy which
pervaded the French revolution, as it was characterized by a direct relationship between the government and its constituents.

in academia and agriculture. In response to the Enlightenment s emphasis on free thought and reason, he built new schools
for medicine and engineering. Looking to compete with western European civilizations like Napoleonic France, he invested
in agriculture, developing irrigation systems and building dams. In the Ottoman Empire, the Sultan Mahmud II also drew
inspiration from the Enlightenment and Napoleonic France on a strategic level, leveraging Western military techniques to

The source I used for the popular news piece is a newspaper article from the Wall Street Journal and the author of this piece
is Joseph De Avila. This article talks about a Connecticut study that finds racial disparity within traffic stops. The report was
investigated by the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at Central Connecticut State University. This particular study
was done using 620,000 traffic stops that were done by the local police departments and state police in Connecticut, which
was done over a 12 month period. The three research questions that were answered in this research were when the traffic
stops took place as well as specific time periods they occured, who was pulled over and if they were searched, as well as if

Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant
Sometimes, the people around a man force him to give up his freedom by giving in to what the audience expects. The person
wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation high. In the short story, Shooting an Elephant , George
Orwell, who writes from his own experiences, describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma.
The narrator feels forced to shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot the
elephant, but because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant die, the narrator feels
compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position of authority. Throughout the time when the
narrator has had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Burmese see the narrator with an elephant rifle, they feel excited. With the weapon in the officer s hand, the
villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as if they should follow him to the elephant
because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant. However, from the narrator s perspective, he states, I had no
intention of shooting the elephant I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary . In his mind, he wishes that
the elephant will not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn back.
Behind him, there was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute. It blocked the road for a
long distance on either side . The villagers expect him to be brave enough to shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the
villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill the elephant. The narrator knows that every white man s life in the
East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at . If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the
Burmese. Therefore, he has no choice.
Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The narrator s decision to
murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the excited Burmese around him, he was only an
absurd puppet

How Does Aristophanes Portray Women In Lysistrata
In Aristophanes comedic play the protagonist Lysistrata called upon the women in the surrounding areas of Greece to
discuss her plans for ending the Peloponnesian war which was keeping their husbands away and causing a financial burden
to the city of Athens. By withholding sex and using politics we can clearly see how Aristophanes attempted to portray
Lysistrata as a strong woman who tried to reverse the roles of men as providers and guardians by reducing them to
subservient and obedient subjects for their amusement. Lysistra organized a meeting with the women of the surrounding
cities of Greece and attempted to lay out her plans for stopping the war which has caused their husbands to be away from
home up to seven months. (Aristophanes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition they are to adorn themselves in cosmetics, slippers, and silk to entice the men then refuse them when the women

Menelaus threw down his sword upon seeing the beauty of Helen (Aristophanes, 33). The women took an oath to the Gods
to uphold their plan over a bowl of Thasian wine. Another group of women took over the Acropolis to seize the treasure and
funds used to support the war. Lysistrata and the others moved to join the ranks. Enter the chorus of Old Men trying to burn
down the gates and smoke out the women in the Acropolis. The Chorus of Women shows up to counter the attack and a
conflict ensues. A magistrate shows up to presumably mediate but after hearing about Lysistrata s plan balks at it as he didn t

Dispute between Japan and China
A dispute over islands in the East China Sea has inflamed relations between Japan and China for the last two years but they
were tense even before. So I think in order to have a better understanding of why Sino Japanese relation is that much tense
all the time, we need to know the background that is history of two countries. I will start from the second Sino Japanese War
because it was the largest Asian War and the most devastating War for the Republic of China. The Nanking Massacre, also
known as the rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanking during the
Second Sino Japanese War, which also happened during the World War Two. The massacre started from December 13, 1937
and it lasted six weeks. During this period, tens of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants were murdered
by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. And widespread rape and looting also occurred. There is not an accurate
estimation of the death roll in the massacre, because most of Japanese military records on the killings were destroyed or kept
secret for some reasons. Chang who published her book The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II,
wrote of the death toll estimates given by different sources; Chinese military specialist Liu Fang chu proposed a figure of
430,000, officials at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and the procurator of the District Court of Nanjing in 1946 stated
at least 300,000 were killed,

Music And Its Effect On Our Lives
Section 2: To many people, music is a significant part to their daily lives and its role varies depending on the individual. I
personally use music as a form of escape from reality and a tool to help me focus in certain situations. Other use music as an
entertainer, an energizer, a coping mechanism or even as a stimulant. Due to this, music is able to play a developmental role
in creating one s identity. In 2007, Tomas Chamorro Premuzic and Adrian Furnham, studied how 21st century listeners use
music in their daily lives and how an individual s personality affects their listening behaviors. After conducting a survey in
which a total of 314 people took, they came to the conclusion that personality and cognitive ability partly determine the way
in which we experience music (Chamorro Premuzic, Furnham, 175). From their survey, they found out that many people use
music for impression management, influencing other people s perceptions towards oneself, as well as emotional regulation
and coping. Some interesting findings from their research were: extroverts use music as background stimulation, people
with lower IQ s tend to use music in more emotional rather than intellectual ways and prefer upbeat and conventional music,
while on the other hand, people with higher IQ s prefer more complex and reflective music. The results also showed that an
individual s emotional stability is connected to their uses of music. Less stable individuals proved to be more sensitive to the

Research Paper On David Hasselhoff
It seems in this modern day and age, no one in the entertainment industry can seem to maintain a good credibility. A prime
example of this is David Hasselhoff. David Hasselhoff demonstrates why having good credibility is an important virtue but
can easily and hastily be destroyed. He also demonstrates that all your actions effect your credibility. David Hasselhoff was
born on July 17, 1952 (age 61) in Baltimore, MD. Some of his first major achievements include starring in many television
series such as The Young and the Restless, Baywatch, Baywatch Nights, and Night Rider. Hasselhoff also dabbled in drama
and theatre. Early in Hasselhoff s life, he believed his career would lead to Broadway. (Stevens) Hasselhoff gained his
credibility by not being caught in scandals through the beginning of his career. He also gained credibility by starring in
many of the productions stated before. He was known as a trustworthy and credible person for a moderate amount of time.
(Stevens) That is, until he was discovered to be in the same boat as the vast majority of the music industry.
David Hasselhoff s middle and current years of his life are controlled by alcohol. (Stevens) The first time the public found
out about Hasselhoff s drunken acts, his credibility toke a large negative hit. In 2002 while Hasselhoff was filming his
Baywatch Reunion movie, he released to the public that over the past twenty years, he has struggled with alcohol. At this

It is a rare, degenerative but fatal brain disorder affecting very a small fraction of persons. The symptoms usually arise at the
age of 60 and the person dies within a year. Many researchers believe that this disorder is the result of an abnormal protein
known as prion. About 5 10% cases reported in the United States share a genetic basis where this form of dementia is caused
by a mutation in the gene for the prion protein. Patients with Creutzfeldt Jakob disease suffer from the problems associated
with muscle coordination, personality changes, impaired memory, judgment making, thinking disability and impaired

specific gene mutations affect metabolism of cholesterol and lipids so excessive amount of cholesterol accumulates in liver
and spleen while excessive lipids accumulate in brain. The symptoms include dementia, confusions and problems of
learning and memory. The disease is known to affect the young school going children but may also affect teen agers.
Batten disease is also a fatal hereditary disorder of the central nervous system occurring in childhood. The symptoms
include formation of lipopigments in body tissues and early symptoms include personality and behavior changes, clumsiness
or stumbling. As the disease advances children may experience mental impairment, loss of sight and motor skills, become
blind and bedridden. Lafora body disease is a rare genetic disorder responsible for causing progressive dementia and
movement problems. The symptoms arise in the early childhood or late teens and are characterized by the presence of
Lafora bodies in brain, skin, muscles and liver and death of child within 2 10 years.

Self assessment this is a form that the manager of each Head Start has to fill out to determine if they were able to meet all
their goals for the year and how can they improve in terms of safety and stretching their budget to include more pertinent
things. First they begin by doing an overview of the year including what when well as well as things that did not go so well.
Then they engage a team to analysis their outcomes while comparing it to the previous goals, from that recommendation are
made on things that need to change as well as how to improve current goals to meet individual needs.
CLASS is an observational instrument used to assess quality in pre school classrooms, it stands for classroom assessment

The Consequences Of Video Games
In the modern gaming industry with main stream Role Playing Games (RPGs), the battle between the two sub genres
(Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs) have taken over the mass media discussions on which is better than the other. Despite
this, the nominated RPGs in 2017 of Best Role Playing Game of the year has shown that split in the society with great
games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Persona 5. However, in the past Western RPGs such as Mass Effect (2008) and

community with precise implementations and uses that draw towards the market better than Japanese RPGs.

This to show how Western RPGs pick up in any slack Japanese RPGs don t with certain game mechanics that people rely on
to have that challenge and immersion in the game.
Despite this, there is the argument about the award shows that are exclusively for either Western or Japanese video games,
and whether The Game Awards is valid in being used since Western RPGs are dominating in the community and hence the
market. In fact, The Game Awards is a show that uses an international jury and as stated before, uses companies such as
Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Activision on the advisory board in the first place. Both Nintendo
and Sony Interactive Entertainment are operated in Japan and thus giving both Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs a chance
compared to a show that there isn t a bias towards a side in this controversy.
In the same fashion of immersion, the use of expression through character customization and the experience throughout the
game greatly coincides with Western RPGs rather than Japanese RPGs. This is due to the fact that in Japanese RPGs the
consumer is told a story rather than being able to be a part of the story, like in Western RPGs. As discussed in an article
called The Rise of Western RPGs by Stace Harman (2014), in the 1980s to early 1990s, Western RPGs developed a complex

Printing Is A Process For Reproducing Text And Images
Abstract Printing is a process for reproducing text and images, typically with ink on paper using a print press.3D printing is
method of converting a virtual 3D model into a physical object from a digital file. It is achieved using Additive Process,
where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created.3D printing could
revolutionize and reshape the world. Advances in 3D printing technology can significantly change and improve the
manufacturing world with effects on energy use, waste reduction ,customization, product availability, medicine, art,
construction and science. By using this technology it becomes easier to transmit designs for new objects around the world.

Definition Essay Freedom
Freedom is often viewed by having the right to be independent or to be free from servitude, constraint, inhibition, and
liberty (Oxford Dictionary). The word freedom derived from a Germanic culture. Freedom has a different meaning to
different people; for example kids, adults and different races. Socially, politically, and religiously the word freedom fits into
different categories with different meanings depending on who thinks about the word. Freedom has a wide range of
definitions that should be specifically stated in one that addresses the public in one way so everyone knows the same

When it comes to politics, people become very serious. Kids do not have much of a say in politics when they are younger
than 18, but once they turn 18, they can vote to elect someone to run office. The problem with this is most young teens
today do not know what is actually being said in office. Teens think it would be funny or cool to vote for someone when the
whole world could crash. The word freedom effects teens in this way because they think oh, I have the right to be free and
have free speech which is true but that statement can not be taken lightly. Most young teens do not have a clue about politics
and vote anyways causing the voting pole to increase towards one person running in office and it could be where that person
is not favorited by the older generation. Adults on the other hand are from an older generation who has deeper knowledge of
politics. The word freedom for adults politically could mean that they can vote for who they want to because they are free to
do so. Having two generations of people and different races politically can cause problems with the freedom to vote. Also,
African Americans have a different view on freedom politically. African Americans can have very much the same view of an
adult as well as having their own independent view. In this case politically the word freedom means anyone can have the
right to vote and have free speech. Religious beliefs can often affect the word freedom as

Vittorio De Sica s Bicycle Thieves
Vittorio de Sica s movie Bicycle Thieves is a global classic, that depicts post war poverty in Rome where there is no
empathy for one another. The movie belongs to the Italian neorealist genre with the basic idea of creating compelling
movies out of a comparatively insignificant incident like that of a bicycle robbery which could have happened to any
common man in Italy. As one may agree, movie is simple, realistic and conveys a dramatic theme. Post war Italy has a
significant impact on its economy and people causing severe poverty, unemployment and housing problems that are clearly
depicted in the movie. These crisis in the city form the real in the neo realistic movie. As Brennan points out in Global

In Bicycle Thieves: A Re Reading , Tomasula says that the ideology in Bicycle Thieves presents itself as Life rather than as

poor and working class, filming it on real locations and using non professional actors. They showed ordinary lives twisted
by events and social forces beyond their control. (Leff and Simmons, 2001, Pg. 145) This does not imply that all neorealist
movies demonstrate these characteristics; it is a strong convention of cinematic realism and a motivation for some of the

Games Theory in International Relations
GAMES THEORY IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The field of game theory came into being with Émile Borel s researches in his 1938 book Applications aux Jeux des Hazard
, and was followed by the 1944 book Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour by John von Neumann and Oskar
Morgenstern. This theory was developed extensively in the 1950s by many scholars. Game theory was later explicitly
applied to biology in the 1970s, although similar developments go back at least as far as the 1930s.
Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics that is used in the social sciences, most notably in economics, as well as in

White Collar Crime And Nonviolar Crime
When we think of crime today what comes to mind? The robbing of a gas station? Breaking and entering into a house at
night? Murder? While it is true that all of these are indeed forms of crime there is another criminal component in today s
world that does not get recognized as much as the others. This is white collar crime. In white collar crime, the victim rarely
sees the offender face to face. Instead technology is used to create false financial statements and steal money from
corporations, individuals, or both.
Simply defined, white collar crime can be described as A nonviolent crime committed for financial gain. White collar crime
can occur in the form of securities fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and other illegal activities than generate
financial returns outside of legal practices. In the extremely competitive business world, white collar crime and other
scandals are unfortunately very common. Just recently one of the United States largest banking companies, Wells Fargo, was
found to have generated over 3 million fake banking or credit card accounts. The source of these fake accounts stems from
lofty sales goals set by the Wells Fargo management team. As employees struggle to meet goals and keep their jobs, good
people can turn to bad and often illegal decisions to stay afloat.
Money has been, and always will be one of the most motivational rewards our world has to offer to the aspiring
businessman. We as a society look at the titans of business as gods

Evaluation Of Mcode Using The Gavin Data
Evaluation of MCODE using the Gavin data set of protein interactions and complexes
In this study, we wanted to use all forms of protein interaction data available, which requires combining of different types of
experiments, such as yeast two hybrid and co immunoprecipitation. Two hybrid results are naturally pairwise, whereas
copurification results are sets of one or more identified proteins. For a copurification result, only a set of size 2 can be
directly considered a pairwise communication, otherwise it must be modeled as a set of hypothetical interactions.
Biochemical copurifications can be thought of as populations of complexes with some hidden pairwise protein interaction
topology that is unknown from the experiment. In the general case of the purification used by Gavin et al., one weakness
tagged protein was used as bait to pull associated proteins out of a yeast cell lysate. The two intense cases for the topology
underlying the population of complexes from a single purification experiment are a minimally connected spoke model,
where the data are modeled as explicit bait associated protein pairwise synergy, and a maximally connected matrix model,
where the data are modeled as all proteins connected to all others in the set. The real topology of the set of proteins must lie
around between these two extremes.
Population of complexes: C = {b, c, d, e} (b = bait)
Spoke model hypothetical interactions: i S = {b c, b d, b e}

On June 10th, 1999 a gasoline pipeline ruptured in Whatcom Falls Park. This park is located in Bellingham, Washington
where the pipeline was controlled by the Olympic Pipeline Company. This break in the gasoline pipeline let over a million
liters of gasoline flow into a nearby river in the park. After about an hour and a half the gasoline in the river ignited and
caught on fire. The fire burnt along the river for one and a half miles. As a result of the gasoline catching on fire, three
people were killed with another eight people injured. It has been estimated that total damages to property reach as high as 45
million dollars. This pipeline explosion was a horrible disaster that could have been avoided for a variety of reasons. There
are multiple important people and organizations involved with this gasoline pipeline explosion. The most important would
be the Olympic Pipeline Company itself. The Olympic Pipeline Company is operated by BP Pipelines. BP Pipelines is the
second largest pipeline company in the United States. There were a few important employees involved in this case that
worked for Olympic. There were the inspectors of the gasoline pipeline, which were to inspect the pipeline s mechanics.
Also, there were the employees who were responsible for installing a pressure relief system that did not work. In addition,
the computer system administrator was very important since this person was working on the software development of the

the film would not have reached its highest without the prominently themed music created by John Williams. The renowned
themes the force and imperial march are one of Williams most widely known music scores and motion pictures of all
history. John Williams was able to vividly depict the characters conflict between good and evil through the use of musical
elements like timbre, pitch and duration to create the individual characters.
The composer utilised timbre to express the evil tyranny of the storm troopers arrival in the Darth Vader s theme . The
composer uses instrumentation like strings, timpani, horns and great emphasis on the brass instruments all near the bottom
of their range. The trumpets and trombones are at mid to low register. The low range portrayed the menacing feel to the

The piece starts in the key of A minor with no sharps or flats. By using a minor key, the composer is deliberately illustrating
the dark tonality of the sith, because just about every chord we hear is minor in this piece. The range of the melody is a
fairly narrow range, detailing in between a low B to an A, being a little over an octave. Though this is a fairly small range,
this was completely the composer s intent varying his instruments dominantly a low pitch, as the deep strong melody
provides the listeners to feel the strength of the evil army s

  • 2. Archetypes In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men And La Strada Rios 1 Natalie Rios Mr. Tlumack Honors English 10 3 December 2017 Archetypal Comparison Of Mice and Men and La Strada Archetypes can vary dramatically through out books, movies and similar works of entertainment. However some writers or directors may have the same kind of archetypes but present them in different ways. In the book Of Mice and Men and the film La Strada archetypes such as grotesques, the journey, as well as social hierarchy are present through out the entirety of each work to convey a larger more profound meaning. John Steinbeck, author of Of Men and Men, and Federico Fellini, director of La Strada, use similar archetypal to convey their own intention for their works. The use of grotesques in both works takes form in the characters Lennie and Gelsomina. Each of the two characters suffers from their own flaw that separates them from being seen as normal characters. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck conveys Lennie to be a man caught between civilization and nature. Through out the book he is never mentally stable enough to be apart of civilization. As seen in chapter one he ...flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool; with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. (Steinbeck. 3) he acts like a wild animal incapable of a logical thought process. Lennie only ever sees things in the moment and does not think of the repercussions that his actions could warrant after the fact. This erratic behavior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Schindler s List Steven Spielberg Schindler s List How has Steven Spielberg used film techniques to make the viewer feel more involved? Introduction: The film Schindler s List is based on a book called Schindler s Ark, written by the Australian novelist Thomas Keneally. It follows Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) a rich German businessman as he devotes his life to saving as many refugees as possible, most of them being Jewish Polish. He does this by employing them in his factories, where they make pots, pans and later on in the film faulty ammunition for the German Nazi military. Oscar employed more than 500 people for several years costing him all of his savings, apart from a few dollars and a golden pin, desperately trying to spare their lives. The impact of Black and White ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first being a dripping fire hydrant only metres away from the dying Jews. They are cramped into such a small, dry, hot space with no water and only short distance away water is being wasted. This shows how uncaring and cruel the Nazis were, it would have been of little effort to them to give the Jewish people water however it was more enjoyable to watch them suffer. Spielberg used a number of close ups on the suffering Jewish people. This shows the audience how little room they have are and how mistreated they are by the Nazis. The final important camera technique is the zoom along the length of hose. This has been used to enphasize the lengths that Schindler will go to in order help the jewish people. Spielberg uses camera angles and techniques to create a greater impact for the audience and also to help portray his message. These camera angles in this scene are used throughout the whole movie, showing the lengths Schindler will go to in order to give them water we can see that he will go to even greater lengths to save their ... • 7. Human Moralism In Dante s Inferno Dante s Research Paper In Dante s Inferno, Dante the pilgrim is given the opportunity to take a journey through hell. Dante is at first a coward and is afraid to take the journey but then Virgil, his guide, convinces him to come on the journey. During this time Dante takes advantage of his opportunity to humiliate his enemies and proves to himself he was right about society. One of the sinners he sees on his journey is Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus and ended up committing suicide over his guilt. In comparison to Judas, Adolf Hitler committed a similar crime;, he killed millions of innocent people for their beliefs because he did not agree with them, betrayed his country, and committed suicide. Rosa Parks, on the other hand, uses human reasoning like Virgil does in The Inferno. Rosa Parks uses what she knows about how people tend to act and took necessary action to prove her point. By comparing the judgments of Adolf Hitler and Rosa Parks to the judgment in Dante s Inferno, it shows that the unfair treatment of the minority in society an absolute standard of human morality over time has not changed, based on how the majority believes some mistreat others who believe and act differently in society, and that this advantage is a right, specifically those who are different deserve to be treated unfairly. The story of Adolf Hitler, 1889 1945, shows another example how the treatment of others the minority in society an absolute standard of human morality over time has not changed based on how the majority believes some mistreat others who believe and act differently in society, and that this advantage is a right, specifically those who are different deserve to be treated unfairly. As a child, Hitler was a troublemaker his sister describes his personally saying: He was a scrubby little rogue, Paula said of her brother, and all attempts of his father to thrash him for his rudeness. . .were in vain (Rosenwald). Most of the time, an author will write in hopes to influence others to believe a certain way. Authors must strategize to master the art of persuasion. There are multiple appeals a writer may use in order to get their point across to the audience. The Jungle and Fast Food Nation use ethos, pathos, and logos in efforts to gain support towards their purpose of improving the work conditions and quality of life for immigrants. In order to convince an audience through an ethical appeal, a writer would use ethos. Ethos places an emphasis on the credibility of the source. In The Jungle Upton Sinclair writes, In the beginning he had been fresh and strong, and he had gotten a job the first day, but now he was second hand, a damaged article... (Sinclair 90). Jurgis, Sinclair s character, goes from adoring capitalism to despising it. Since he proves to be open minded, his feelings seem less biased. Once the reader observes the vicious cycle Jurgis endures, it becomes difficult to make an argument against him. In Fast Food Nation Schlosser states, We are human beings, more than one person told me, but they treat us like animals (Schlosser 169). Introduction In Being Mortal, Atul Gawande uses his experiences as a surgeon, professor and public health professional to discuss many facets of Western end of life care and the process of growing old in a modern age. Overall, I have found that three overpowering themes in this novel are security versus autonomy, a need for pragmatism surrounding the concept of death, and our medicalized society s devaluation of hospice and palliative care. Personally, the importance of one s freedom in life is drawn upon by the lives of my grandparents. Although my maternal grandmother and grandfather are 75 and 77 years of age, respectively, they continue to live fulfilling and productive lives. It is not to be said that they have not suffered from problems related to aging, such as my grandfather suffering from severe arthritis, but they value their freedom to continue living their own lives more than anything. The true worth of their ability to write their own stories is most evident in the fact that they are motivated to continue to write them throughout old age. 3. A Need for Pragmatism in the Face of Death As mentioned in a Frontline interview with Gawande about Being Mortal, life s two unfixables are aging ang dying ( Dr. Atul Gawande On Aging, Dying And Being Mortal ). How Does Aristophanes Portray Women In Lysistrata In Aristophanes comedic play the protagonist Lysistrata called upon the women in the surrounding areas of Greece to discuss her plans for ending the Peloponnesian war which was keeping their husbands away and causing a financial burden to the city of Athens. By withholding sex and using politics we can clearly see how Aristophanes attempted to portray Lysistrata as a strong woman who tried to reverse the roles of men as providers and guardians by reducing them to subservient and obedient subjects for their amusement. Lysistra organized a meeting with the women of the surrounding cities of Greece and attempted to lay out her plans for stopping the war which has caused their husbands to be away from home up to seven months. • 26. Dispute between Japan and China A dispute over islands in the East China Sea has inflamed relations between Japan and China for the last two years but they were tense even before. So I think in order to have a better understanding of why Sino Japanese relation is that much tense all the time, we need to know the background that is history of two countries. I will start from the second Sino Japanese War because it was the largest Asian War and the most devastating War for the Republic of China. The Nanking Massacre, also known as the rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanking during the Second Sino Japanese War, which also happened during the World War Two. The massacre started from December 13, 1937 and it lasted six weeks. During this period, tens of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. And widespread rape and looting also occurred. There is not an accurate estimation of the death roll in the massacre, because most of Japanese military records on the killings were destroyed or kept secret for some reasons. Chang who published her book The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, wrote of the death toll estimates given by different sources; Chinese military specialist Liu Fang chu proposed a figure of 430,000, officials at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and the procurator of the District Court of Nanjing in 1946 stated at least 300,000 were killed, ... • 27. Music And Its Effect On Our Lives Section 2: To many people, music is a significant part to their daily lives and its role varies depending on the individual. I personally use music as a form of escape from reality and a tool to help me focus in certain situations. Other use music as an entertainer, an energizer, a coping mechanism or even as a stimulant. Due to this, music is able to play a developmental role in creating one s identity. In 2007, Tomas Chamorro Premuzic and Adrian Furnham, studied how 21st century listeners use music in their daily lives and how an individual s personality affects their listening behaviors. After conducting a survey in which a total of 314 people took, they came to the conclusion that personality and cognitive ability partly determine the way in which we experience music (Chamorro Premuzic, Furnham, 175). From their survey, they found out that many people use music for impression management, influencing other people s perceptions towards oneself, as well as emotional regulation and coping. Some interesting findings from their research were: extroverts use music as background stimulation, people with lower IQ s tend to use music in more emotional rather than intellectual ways and prefer upbeat and conventional music, while on the other hand, people with higher IQ s prefer more complex and reflective music. The results also showed that an individual s emotional stability is connected to their uses of music. Less stable individuals proved to be more sensitive to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two hybrid results are naturally pairwise, whereas copurification results are sets of one or more identified proteins. For a copurification result, only a set of size 2 can be directly considered a pairwise communication, otherwise it must be modeled as a set of hypothetical interactions.
