Higman, R., Bangert, D. and Jones, S., 2019. Three camps, one destination: the intersections of research
data management, FAIR and Open. Insights, 32(1), p.18. DOI: http://doi.org/10.1629/uksg.468
• Paper explores overlaps between
concepts of Open, FAIR and RDM.
• Proposes using Open and FAIR as
ways to engage researchers in
managing data well, as this is a
prerequisite for both.
• Recommends making data FAIR
and Open wherever possible

6. Be pragmatic in how you support
🤘🤘🤘
NWO is a great example of innovative and practical funding
programmes. Open Science Fund and DCC programme has
led to transformations
7. Why engage NRENs in Open Science?
• In all Member States and Associated Countries – truly European infrastructure
• Have demonstrated robust & reliable service delivery at scale e.g. eduroam
• Work for universities who are grappling with Open Science problem
• Have relevant skills to provide solutions e.g. procurement
• Can act as a community and lobby for change
• Have viable, sustainable business models
Ultimately, the GÉANT community is the single, most viable eInfrastructure
8. A marriage made in heaven
• Strong in network delivery
• Focus liaison on service providers
• Works on EOSC to deliver core
• Strong in above net services
• Focused on research communities
• Delivers user engagement in EOSC
• Both community-led organisations
• Both consensus driven and values-based
• Both supported by European Commission
Address the open science problem from
opposite ends of the spectrum
