deals with protection against electric shock as applied to
electrical installations
based on IEC 61140 which is a basic safety standard that
applies to the protection of persons and livestock (IEC
61140 provides fundamental principles and requirements
that are common to electrical installations, electrical
equipment and for their co-ordination)

IEC 60364-4-41
fundamental rule of protection against electric shock:
protection under normal conditions is provided by basic
protective provisions ( basic protection) and protection
under single fault conditions is provided by fault protective
provisions ( fault protection)
alternatively, protection against electric shock is provided
by an enhanced protective provision, which provides
protection under normal conditions and under single fault
conditions.

• double or reinforced insulation
• electrical separation (mit einem Verbrauchsmittel)
• extra-low-voltage provided by SELV and PELV
• non-conducting location
• protection by earth-free local equipotential bonding
• electrical separation for the supply of more than one
item of current-using equipment

provides requirements for the protection of live conductors
from the effects of overcurrents
describes how live conductors are protected by one or
more devices for the automatic disconnection of the supply
in the event of overload and short-circuit except in cases
where the overcurrent is limited or where the conditions
described in “Omission of devices for protection against
overload” or “Omission of devices for protection against
short-circuit” are met
includes coordination of overload protection and short-
circuit protection
