The latter part of this course, we read Kristen Weld's book Paper Cadavers. This book captured the
importance of the discovery of the Guatemalan archives. An intense amount of work was put into
recovering approximately 80 million documents from the government after decades of internal
warfare. This reconstruction of public memory was extremely important for those involved in
recovering and sifting through the documents, the families and friends who lost people during the
civil war, to Guatemala and the discovery also held significance international (Weld). A few years
later in March of 2008 files were seized by the Colombian Armed Forced during a raid. These
archives belonged to the insurgent group called The Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia
People's Army or FARC. The files belonged personally to "Raul Reyes" (a leader of FARC) who
was killed during the raid along with 24 other insurgent members (Walser). This led to some
controversy about the files later on. The Colombian Armed Forces handed over the archives to
Interpol, so they could be decoded and analyzed. These two sets of documents are different
discoveries of public memory that impacted lives as public memory was reconstructed. They
exposed human rights violations through their (re)discovery and release to the public. The files

Term Project – Archive Visit The archive I am visiting for this term project is the Local History &
Archives of the Hamilton Public Library located on the third floor of the Central Branch at 55 York
Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario. Since 1914, Hamilton Public Library has been collecting and
preserving Hamilton 's history. The Local History & Archives collection consists of material such as
letters, photographs, manuscripts, diaries and other original records created by Hamilton and area
citizens. There are records of local businesses and organizations, family papers, government records
of the City of Hamilton and the County of Wentworth, military records, theatrical collections, music

they can listen and follow verbal instructions. For them, I do not have to repeat nor display my
instruction on the whiteboard nor through PowerPoint slides, but I do sometimes have to speak
slower to assure they can hear what I say. They can write simple and complex sentences, with a high

For this assignment, students were asked to review an archival institution and critically examine it.
This included doing an in–person interview with a staff member and a website review. Some areas
students were asked to explore in the archive were; its mission, policies and procedures, funding and

The Archives mission is to preserve and make these documents available for research and
instruction. The Special Collections mission is to provide reference assistance and a storage location
for archival materials. Their mission is to also preserve the history of the University's activities and
accomplishments. On their website it states that Special Collections, "houses the Library's rare
books and pamphlets, manuscript collections, photographs, the University Archives, and the Map
Collection. The Department's major purposes are to acquire these materials, make them available for
use, and preserve their integrity for future generations of students and scholars."
UC Davis Special Collections also collect materials having to with the Northern Ca, but also more
regionally in the Central Valley, including UC Davis and Yolo County. They also collect items that
reflect the academic strengths of UC Davis in general. For example, the university was in contact
with a photographer who had no affiliation with UC Davis, but had a collection of photos of grapes
and vineyards, they would bring a collection like that in, because it supports the research that is

Within this research proposal, I will be discussing my hypothesis that will determine the question I
have for my final research study. This research study will gather information from archival data and
will not have any contact with any participants. This proposal will discuss the types of archival data
being collected, the variables that will be measured, the foreseen limits of this research study, and
the procedure to intact the ethical principles of the population. I hypothesize that the number of
motor vehicle accidents declared in North America will be higher with rain, fog, and snow weather
conditions. For this research proposal I will be looking at completed studies and research to
determine if there is a relationship between weather and motor vehicle accidents. I will also look at
statistics, specifically Statistics Canada, data collection on vehicles driven and weather conditions
specific to areas in North America. One variable that are being measured is the type of weather
conditions, such as rain, snow, or fog. Another variable that is being measure is the amount and type
of motor vehicle. These variables will be researched specific to North America areas. Many of the
studies I am looking at are accessible through universities' library and Google scholar. Although for
some of the studies, I need to have access to a student number for the universities' resources or pay
