Nyc's 911 Archive Database
Interlock Migrates New York City's 911 Archive Data – the Largest Emergency Call Center in the
Nation Handling more than 11 million calls per year, NYC's 911 system is the largest in the nation.
Founded in 1968, it is operated by the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department of
NYC and the FDNY Emergency Medical Services, with the Office of Citywide Emergency
Communications handling interdepartmental coordination. With approximately one billion files of
911 call recordings in an aging archive storage solution, when NYC's 911 archive data needed to be
migrated to new storage, they needed an expert team. The Challenge NYC's 911 system was on an
aging archive storage system that was reaching end–of support. The legacy equipment was
experiencing numerous technical challenges and faced rapidly increasing support costs. The archive
data had also grown exponentially, and there were multiple different conflicting data retention
policies in place. "There was a tremendous amount of data, a rolling retention period, as well as
numerous reports and explanations that had to be provided to the different stakeholders before the
work even started," stated Vincent Guadagno, director of NYC public ... Show more content on

Interlock wrote a custom program to parse through the data, saving the critical files for legal holds
and required retention, while deleting superfluous files. With traditional software, a migration
company would not be able to parse the data as it is in a separate que. But, Interlock's custom
program ran the data through data analysis, and parsed the files individually to meet the highly
nuanced requirements of NYC 911's retention and legal hold policies. While parsing the data,
Interlock also helped NYC 911 define and implement data retention policies that decreased the
quantity of files by almost 50%, leading to lower storage and maintenance

Summary Of Arlette Farge's Allure Of The Archives
Archives can be made up of letters, records, paintings, photos, artifacts, and others for preservation
to understand what occurred during a period in history or the perspective of a person's life. Many of
these archives can be found in museums and libraries around the world for researchers or historians
to obtain information about events that occurred in the past. Although, there are still hidden
documents that have yet to be discovered. When researchers or historian begin their journey of
going through these documents, they will soon realize the difficulties of finding a never–ending
answer to their objective. Arlette Farge created the novel, "Allure of the Archives," to provide a
perspective of a female researcher searching through archives ... Show more content on

She visits the French National Archives, Library of the Arsenal, and the National Library to find
information related to women during the eighteenth century. Farge compares archives as judicial
reports because they share a similar preservation. For example, logbooks in the police departments
are archived because it can be easily accessed for future investigations. Judicial reports are like
archives discovered because people from the past may have left these documents or artifacts for
future generations to discover to conduct research. The researcher continues to discuss several issues
she came across when going through these archives. Before the creation of technology, many of the
discovered documents "have deteriorated physically, and torn corners or margin nibble away by time
can swallow words whole. The writing in the margins has often become illegible, and a single
missing word can leave their meaning in suspense" (Farge 56). This was an issue that occurred
frequently towards the researcher because some of them were incomplete and may have possible
hold the answers to the questions. Many of these documents may have been exposed to elements,
such as water, fire and others, that may have increased the deterioration rate. Luckily, technology
has advanced over the years to save these documents onto the computer before disappearing forever.
Another issue she endured was determining what was truth from fictional. Also, figuring out what is
important and useless to her research. For example, an event may have caused one person to
fabricate information to gain popularity, while another document may have left out important
information. This would lead the researcher to look for more documents to compare information
from one document to

The Parts Of A Community Analysis
1. Discuss the parts of a community analysis report why each part is important.
Defining borders is important for the patrons to understand the community in which the library
serves. It's also important due to knowing the development of the collection which caters to the
patrons of the community. The borders can be defined through zip codes, and service areas. (Disher,
2007, p. 10) Understanding the borders of the library allows the staff to understand who they are
servicing, and what trends are a part of their patrons. Defining borders is also important to respect
the neighboring Library and the patrons that they are servicing. To allow their funding to be used
accordingly in acquiring the materials that are needed for their patrons. ... Show more content on

It's also important in collecting the circulation data to find out more about the active users of the
library. (Disher, 2007, p. 10)
Understanding and using the data is the most important part of creating the analysis report. Some
create charts to illustrate the data. But a major part of understand the data, is to know that it's forever
changing. (Disher, 2007. p.10)
2. Discuss the parts of a collection development policy and why each part is important.
"The introduction is the first part of the collection development policy and its importance is to
provide the patrons an answer to why the policy has been created. To inform the users on how often
it has been reviewed, and when revisions may take place (Disher, 2007, p. 48)."
"The mission, vision, and goals is the second part of the policy and it plays a part in allowing the
users to understand the purpose and meaning of the library. The vision takes place to illustrate the
short and long term goals of the library (Disher, 2007, p. 48)."
"Community served is a part of the policy in regards to showing the demographic in which the
Library serves. It shows the reason for what the collection consist of, regarding the community
(Disher, 2007, p. 48). The importance of the community served part of the policy is to show the need
of the collection for the community."
"The responsibility for collection development is the fourth part of the policy in which it allows the

Myth In Ostriker's Circe/Mud Poems
Mythology, and its prevalent cultural ideals, has long been rooted in male dominated aspects and
perceptions. It has seldom discussed or accepted notions from the "other side", that is, those of
women, and the ideals of feminism that come with these myths. In the theoretical piece, "Stealing
the Language: The Emergence of Women's Poetry in America", Ostriker discusses and brings to
light how women have reformulated and revised classical myths in an attempt to negate biased
perceptions based on gender and archetypes, and brings focus on feminist views through the
alteration and assimilation of female characteristics and the way society views them. In the primary
text, "Circe/Mud Poems", Atwood acknowledges both views and perceptions of the female ... Show

To begin with, although the theoretical text covers several aspects of the poem, including the two
roles and characteristics that both women and men embody; symbolized through Circe and her
passiveness as the mud woman and her strength and power over man, and Odysseus who is active
and strong yet also willing to submit to Circe and is methodically passive yet capable of resisting
Circe's charms and magic. Although Circe is often overcome with Odysseus, she is simultaneously
functioning as an independent and empowered woman who gives him, Odysseus, two prerogatives,
to be "feared or to be despised", leading to the ultimatum that either she will have more power than
him or he will make her his subordinate. However, the theoretical text, in light of the primary poem,
fails to touch upon the aspect of the self awareness that Circe experiences and the ruthlessness of the
story that is depicted and portrayed in greater detail and allegorical dialect in the primary source.
Specifically, in light of the theoretical text that depicts and explains the "two islands" that represent
both the writer's methodological narrative displacement and the two types of love that are being
symbolized, the islands can also

Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media. There is a search bar at the top and
underneath is a section entitled "discover." Under this heading there are links to maps,
explorations, people and past events. The links are sectioned out into squares with images

The "explorations" option offers a series of various questions and detailed answers to the
questions. Questions include everything from "Was the Mall ever used as farm land" to "How
have protests on the Mall changed over time." Linked to the explorations tab is a scavenger hunt
selection. At this point, it is almost certainly geared towards a younger audience. There are only
four options in this section: The National World War II Memorial, The Smithsonian Castle, The
Korean War Memorial and the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial. A description of each sites' location
and several zoomed in photographs of aspects in the site are the only components included.
The people tab articulates prominent figures from the past and present that influenced the
formation and development of the national mall. One in particular is Jacob S. Coxey who led the
first march on Washington in 1894 which involved the increase in unemployment at the time.
Coxy was arrested and jailed for 20 days because the law at the time prohibited gatherings on
capital grounds. Much of the information used to craft these descriptions is compiled from the
Library of Congress collections and Smithsonian Institition Archives.
The last subsection is concerning "past events." Topics are divided into time periods

Archive Charlotte Farge Analysis
What could be more essential to the historian than archives? Arlette Farge explains, "This is where
our work begins." However, to many, the vast repositories of records and documents seem dull and
lifeless. To the eager historian, the archives are a vast and treacherous ocean and seemingly
impossible to wade through. In spite of this, they are seductive to Farge, enticing her to sift through
the endless Paris police records of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. The "allure" is the innate
potential of the archives to illuminate areas of the past, which would otherwise be forgotten. While
historical knowledge is highly elusive and eternally incomplete, shades of the true past inhabit the
archive's documents and records. She analogizes the archive to a thick forest. When you first arrive,
it will be difficult to see, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the eighteenth–century Parisian police reports are about singular events, containing the
unique experiences of individuals –– the only recorded experiences of many. When she arrives, the
reports are a jumbled mess, as sheer recollection is not enough. She must reconstruct the context of
these events and rearrange them in the most useful way, one which will create a narrative of the past.
In many cases, "the archive miniaturizes the historical object." The expressions of one's desires,
fears, loves, and miseries can reveal larger social movements, describes Farge. She is not merely
concerned about singular events, but the larger historical themes to which the events point.
Undeniably, the experiences of the individual are inextricably linked to a surrounding society.
Therefore, police reports (individually or collectively) hint at broader societal trends. One example
she uses is an illiterate man, Thorin, who was imprisoned in the Bastille, and how his disjointed
writings "retained a voice, an intonation, a rhythm." As a result, she uncovered evidence of an
auditory

The Discovery Of The Guatemalan Archives
The latter part of this course, we read Kristen Weld's book Paper Cadavers. This book captured the
importance of the discovery of the Guatemalan archives. An intense amount of work was put into
recovering approximately 80 million documents from the government after decades of internal
warfare. This reconstruction of public memory was extremely important for those involved in
recovering and sifting through the documents, the families and friends who lost people during the
civil war, to Guatemala and the discovery also held significance international (Weld). A few years
later in March of 2008 files were seized by the Colombian Armed Forced during a raid. These
archives belonged to the insurgent group called The Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia
People's Army or FARC. The files belonged personally to "Raul Reyes" (a leader of FARC) who
was killed during the raid along with 24 other insurgent members (Walser). This led to some
controversy about the files later on. The Colombian Armed Forces handed over the archives to
Interpol, so they could be decoded and analyzed. These two sets of documents are different
discoveries of public memory that impacted lives as public memory was reconstructed. They
exposed human rights violations through their (re)discovery and release to the public. The files
taken from FARC were handed straight to Interpol for forensic investigation. In total there were
eight computers that were seized. Interpol found that none of the documents recovered

Climate Analysis On Climate Archives
There is significant evidence from studies based on climate archives that the Earth's climate about
10 000 years ago was very different from the present climate; it has changed a lot since the last
glacial period which ended about 10 000– 12 000 years ago (Chappell, 1998). Hence, about 10 000
years ago the Earth was buried under ice sheets and it was much cooler than present temperatures
(see Figure 1, Appendix) (Chappell, 1998). The Earth that has been cycling between cold and warm
climates for ages and is currently in the interglacial period where it has slowly become warmer
along with a rise in sea level (Watts, 2009). There are many climate archives which can help
scientists study past climates and their development over time. Climate ... Show more content on

Corals were first discovered about 200 million years, however most have grown over the last 10 000
years. Therefore, corals are great climate archives to use in order to study the climate from the last
10 000 years. Corals also have a wide array of climatic history stored within them (Introduction:
Coral Reefs, 2015). They have a long lifetime and rapid growth which makes them ideal climate
archives for studying the past climate (Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, 2015). Along with
the corals there is the foraminifera; also referred to as sea floor fossils. These sea floor fossils are
often found in sediment cores and can reveal a variety of things about the past climate through
ocean currents, temperature and oxygen ratios. Also these fossils are the most common source of
paleoceanographic proxies, making them easily available (Kucera, 2007). Hence, foraminifera or
sea floor fossils are an ideal climate archives for studying the past climate from about 10 000 years
ago alongside corals. Information about the past climate can not only help us understand our present
climate but can also help predict our future climate trends.
Corals, which are one of the climate archives been discussed, are living organisms who produce a
calcium carbonate skeleton to make themselves look like rocks. The calcium carbonate bands found
in corals help form permanent records of seasonal and annual climate changes. Corals are a type of

Confederate Archive
In The Afterlives of a Confederate Archive, Yael Sternhell encourages the reader to journey deeper
into the archive. Elucidating how archives are constructed by humankind – people with agendas and
perspectives – he quickly dispatches with some common misconceptions regarding archives. The
annals of amassed historic material have not, in fact, aged into apolitical constructions. Historical
catalogs are not only political at the date of their inception, but are also shaped by broader social and
cultural forces. With great disciplinary acuity, Sternhell provides an example of his argument,
providing an insightful critique of a supposedly objective archive. Sternhell examines the Official

Typically, I treat seemingly reputable historical analysis as fact, and only when pressed do I ponder
the author's motives and intensions. Even less often, do I question the political perceptions of the
organizers of chronicled archives. The sifters, and eventual arbiters of what historical ephemera
should live on. How did archives form? They are not compiled by an unemotional artificial
intelligence that omnisciently records all global human action. Moreover, to address the specific
example provided by Sternhell, it becomes obviously that the victors of various wars and political
squabbles possess more sway in how a historical record is remembered. The Union was victorious in
the American Civil War, and thus it was the leaders of the Union who got to pose the seemingly
apolitical presentation of history, which was obviously political in the very nature of its
construction. This information provided by Yael Sternhell, provides a concrete example of what Carr
explored in The Historian and His Facts. Carr argued that there was no purely objective history, that
instead, it was the historian that chooses to emphasize whatever he deems appropriate to

Farge makes it clear that the act of finding research requires patience. Patience is essential when
looking through any and all documents, especially when the documents are disorganized. Farge uses
judicial archives as the example of documents researchers might go through for information about

increasing opportunities for collaborations at universities by trending affecting higher education

develop new approaches to the important issue of the use of archival material. Six approaches to this

improving procedures for interpreting and reporting on that use, promoting increased research use,
emphasizing use as a means of garnering program support, reaching out to the user community for

The Allure Of The Archives By Arlette Farge
Arlette Farge is a French historian and Director of Research in Modern History, and specialized in
18th century France social history. She mainly took the use of police and legal records to uncover
the unheard voices of everyday people during and after the French Revolution. In this novella The
Allure of the Archives written by Arlene Farge Arlette, she explores the archives in the French
National Archives, the Library of the Arsenal and the National Library. These archives were taken
from eighteen century, France, the missing key and some type of evidence which will later shed

Identity is defined by actions. Actions that are taken out of the ordinary are what others would call
courageous and noteworthy. These actions surpass the call of duty and propel their status from
normalcy to their true individuality. Insane, crazy, abnormal, indifferent, it is the experiences of
these persons who define them. There are quite a few principals, who are considered social norms
among different countries simple as money, power, and respect for elders, however, sometimes
problems do arrive! Such as gender, and love. It is all found in every part of the world. "From the
start, the archive plays with truth as with reality", It may vary to an extent in different ways,
however, there is no doubt that universal social norms exist throughout the world. Today, however
perceptions have changed. It has become something abnormal in the eyes of many individuals.

The Importance Of An Important Role Within Society
Archivists play an important role within society. Historically, archives were centered on the
preservation of materials (Vassilakaki & Moniarou–Papaconstantinou, (2017). As the centuries
passed, the role of the archivist expanded the schooling necessary to work as an archivist became
more complex, and the field of archival science developed into what it is today. In the scope of
library professions, the number of archivists is still quite small. As of April 2015, there were
approximately 166,200 librarians working in the United States, as of that May, only 5,460 of these
were archivists (Eastwood, 2017). This indicates that the profession is still developing. According to
Jenkinson (1922), the author of the Manual of Archive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why there is no clear education path. Usually, a bachelor's degree in the liberal arts is
pursued; however, there is no specific major for the career. It is further recommended to take any pre
LIS or archival courses offered during ones undergraduate education (Vault, 2017). Having
completed a bachelor's degree, one could begin working in the field, however, they would be
severely lacking in the required knowledge to perform well as an archivist. It is most typical to
further pursue a Master's degree in History, Library Science, Political Science, or Public
Administration. In the last decade, it has become common to see both Computer Science and
Information Systems as Masters Degrees (OOH, 2015; Anderson, 2010, 756). As noted by Eastwood
(2017), a master's program specifically dedicated to Archival Science does not exist in the United
States; however, multiple educators in the field seek to have one established (78). Though there are
many options for ones higher education degree, individuals seeking a career in archives typically
pursue a degree in History or LIS because of the significant overlap between the degree and the
professional competencies (Shepherd, 2010, 187). Furthermore, depending on the specific type of
archives one intends to work in, it may be necessary to pursue a dual masters. For example, if one
intends to work in the archives at a historical society, it is necessary to have a History and LIS

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Appraisal
Archives are well documented extensive records or collected data of historical documents which are
used as tools for critical analysis. Appraisal on the other hand is the act of estimating or judging the
nature or value of something. Essentially, taking into account the definitions, archival appraisal is
looking at all the available dimensions and variables of a subject, keeping in mind its pros and cons,
its advantages and disadvantages and at the same time assessing the strengths and weaknesses. It is
critically analysing the available literature. The ulterior motive so to speak is to preserve the
documents by adding value, keeping in mind the various biases and results of other's studies, in
order to extend the life of the archived documents. The concept of appraisal highlights the method of
assessing the documents. The appraisal should be devoid of any sort of partiality. It should not
favour any type of user. The appraisal is not supposed to be objective, not subjected to any sort of
personal beliefs or opinions, nor shall it be based on any influenced notion. ... Show more content on

The archival theory varies from the archival methodology in terms of their usage. Archival theory
suggests what archival material is whereas archival methodology helps us figuratively decide how to
treat the archival documents. When value is attributed to such archival records or documented data),
it should be retained in their original form. The reason for preserving records and documented data
in their original form can be explained by the fact that when such documents have been attributed
value, they are archivally best accepted in their original form only. Therefore, value of archival
documents does not stand relative. However, the concept of attributing value to the archival
documents is relative since the opinions may vary from one archivist to another, from one

Magazines Are to be Read and Studies as Primary Source...
It is a well–noted fact, among periodical experts and students of print culture alike, that the word
magazine, in English as well as French, bears the original meaning of "storehouse" (Scholes and
Wulfman 29). Here, etymology provides valuable insight into the interdisciplinary nature of this
field of study and the essential characteristics of the study itself which merit such an approach as is
hereunder delineated. In viewing the early twentieth–century magazine as a repository of distinct yet
reticular pieces of information, it is evident that special care must be given to the investigation of its
contents. Among the most prominent concerns of modernist periodical research in that regard,
according to the writers surveyed, is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to construct an effective means for studying periodicals, therefore, it would seem that
deliberate effort must be given not only to the assembly and dissemination of unexpurgated copies
of these texts but also to material categorization and searchability. One cogent statement by Latham
and Scholes reiterates this simple truth: "the usefulness of a digital archive depends heavily on our
ability to find things in it" (521). In order to further mitigate the debilitating effect that library
cataloguing and anthologization have had on modernist periodical researching techniques, it is
necessary to employ a system whereby works can be sorted according to their linguistic as well as
bibliographic, or physical, features. Scholes and Wulfman propose a method for bringing about such
an arrangement in their chapter entitled "Rethinking Modernist Magazines" (54–55).
In closing, it is important to note that the conceptual approach described above–albeit promising–
does not come without certain implicit restraints, perhaps the most notable of which is the pressing
need for quality research through interdisciplinary cooperation. One writer proposes "the creation of
humanities labs" in addition to the implementation of "tools and institutional structures necessary to
engage the diversity, complexity, and coherence of modern periodical culture" (Latham and Scholes
530). Above all, research that is truly

The Scientific Study Of Climate Archives
Introduction Paleoclimatology is the scientific study of Earth's past climate using indirect data
("Paleoclimatology", 2015). Since the Industrial Revolution studying climate archives is important
because anthropogenic effects have become a prominent factor in climatic variation and they allow
scientist to get an idea of past climatic variation in order to predict future climatic trends (Redinger,
2006). The indirect indicators that are used in climate archives are known as climate proxies
(Ruddiman, 2013). There are 4 main climatic archives which are ice, trees, corals and sediments

Glacial ice is created through the annual deposition of snow that piles up in continuous sequences
due to vast plateaus (Bethan, 2014). There are 2 main ice sheets present on Earth today. The first one
is located in Greenland and dates up to 125,000 years ago while the other is the Antarctic ice sheet
that dates up to 800,000 years ago (Ruddiman, 2013). Ice thickness can provide clues about the local
precipitation and thicker layers corresponds to greater snowfall which tells us about global
temperatures due to the fact that more snow tends to accumulate at the poles during global warm
spells. However, majority of the data about past climate is gained from ice cores, are produced when
the ice sheets are drilled on the major axis of growth at about 4–5 inches in diameter and up to
lengths of 1m in order to get a vertical core that can be stored for analysis. Ice cores are not limited
to polar regions, they can be found on 6 of the 7 continents of Earth and can range in thickness from
mountain glaciers to continental ice sheet (Ruddiman, 2013) (Figure 2). However the 2

We can start at the beginning. The corporeal archive database would be created through the
University of Texas student's coursework, or extra–curricular. Meaning, the labor in development
would be free. One of the goals in creation is to hold a large capacity of information. The system
would be paperless and convert any other outdated document to digital form as well. Once
established globally, all records ever created in the aspect of the body, from every association, would
be submitted to the global corporeal archives' maintaining organization. This organization will
automatically import the documents into the system, organizing them appropriately by the patient.
Every individual record would include a photo of each person. The documents in each record can be
information provided by the patient, including, but not limited to physician's notes. The papers will
contain a variety of information on a patient's health or body history. Even personal items such as
significant illnesses and medical conditions, lab findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Other
fact–based data including history of drug abuse or alcohol use, and smoking, also physical exams,
allergies, medications, and any adverse reactions. The paperwork would list dates, times, attending
personnel, admittance and discharge notes, and any other related reports. The system I am proposing
to be financed would allow access to new and previous information among providers throughout the

Archives Of The Hamilton Public Library
Term Project – Archive Visit The archive I am visiting for this term project is the Local History &
Archives of the Hamilton Public Library located on the third floor of the Central Branch at 55 York
Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario. Since 1914, Hamilton Public Library has been collecting and
preserving Hamilton 's history. The Local History & Archives collection consists of material such as
letters, photographs, manuscripts, diaries and other original records created by Hamilton and area
citizens. There are records of local businesses and organizations, family papers, government records
of the City of Hamilton and the County of Wentworth, military records, theatrical collections, music
collections, ephemera, etc. This archive visit took place on November 16th 2016.
According to their website the mandate of the Local History & Archives collection has five main
goals. The first is that the Local History & Archives collection exists to "collect and preserve
materials which illustrate the growth and development of Hamilton–Wentworth, both before and
after incorporation, or which pertain in whole or in part to activities within the geographic
boundaries of Hamilton–Wentworth" (HPL). The second goal is to arrange and describe these
materials according to "archival principles and make them accessible to the general public on a
regular basis" (HPL). The third goal is simply to provide adequate and appropriate conditions for the
storage, protection and preservation of the materials

Beyond the Mason Jar is not just a magazine, it is a project that I put a significant amount of thought
and passion into. The Zero Waste Movement is a movement that I actively participate in and deeply
value in my life. I certainly did not want to write a magazine about something I had no prior interest
in. Not to say that creating a magazine about completely new information wouldn't be interesting in
some way, but rather that I was able to really invest myself into the topic I chose because of my
close relationship with the topic. Through the creation of Beyond the Mason Jar, I was also able to

I included a quote by Mother Teresa that I love and felt accurately expressed my purpose for the

the things that I lot of people either in or joining the ZWM is the struggle for perfection and impact
(myself included). It can be really daunting when you see pictures of waterways overwhelmed by
plastic debris in other developing countries or a video of a plastic straw stuck in the nose of a poor
sea turtle (that is another story in itself). I think it is vital for the readers to realize that we can only
do so much to aid in situations like those. However, I want to show them that the ripples we cast do
make a difference. I have found that to be very true in my life. Every time someone tells me they
think of me because of some plastic they threw away or something they did to be more sustainable,
the fire in my heart grows exponentially. That is the power that I want the reader to realize they
have. Next, the couple of advertisements that I included in my magazine are sort of akin to

The Valley Of The Shadow Archives
The Valley of the Shadow The Valley of the Shadow archives is an online database that has digitally
archived diaries, letters, and newspapers from two neighboring counties, Augusta County, Virginia
and Franklin County, Pennsylvania during the Civil War era in the United States. Separated by the
Mason–Dixon Line, a line which marked the geography between southern slave states and northern
free–slave states, disconnected the southern Augusta County and the northern Franklin County. The
archives focus on the Pre–war, war time, and post war views of the Counties inhabitants based on
religion, economy, family life, and their controversial views on slavery. These insights give modern
day historians the ability to piece together what life was actually like for the residents of the
opposing Counties. One of the most influential controversies between the north and the south is the
abolition of slavery, the north being for the freeing of slaves, and the south being for the retention
and expansion of slavery. The economic stability that slavery provided for southern states was a
driving force for the southern front, while the concept of emancipation drove the northern front to
fight for the abolition of slavery all together. This ultimately leads to the Southern succession from
the Union and spawns the Civil War, thus separating Augusta and Franklin County. Therefore, the
central idea of this essay is to show the opposing attitudes of Augusta County and Franklin County,

Innovation Through Source Analysis For The Classroom
Innovation through Source Analysis If teachers want to revolutionize the way that history or social
studies is taught in the classroom, they must move away from the idea that history is a series of facts
that need to be taught to students. Instead of simply giving students the answers to historical
questions, teachers must impart the practice of historical inquiry to their students. This ability to
think like a historian allows students to be active participants in all history lessons. Such a
revolutionary transformation is only possible if teachers generate innovative lessons that propagate
historical analysis in the classroom. At the same time, teachers are expected to adhere to the
Common Core standards that require students to be able to read, understand, and utilize "complex
informational texts" (80). In order to transform history in the classroom and adhere to these
Common Core Standards, it is important that teachers understand the importance of source analysis
in lessons, know how to choose and create age–appropriate adapted sources, and successfully
incorporate such lessons into larger units that ensure students learn to think historically. To ensure
that students are able to engage in the practices utilized by historians, teachers must provide students
with the proper tools to do so. Since historical thinking takes practice, students need materials to
practice with. Primary sources offer the perfect opportunity for such practice. In fact, according to

My Learner 's Academic Development On Their Past Work And...
I am basing my descriptions of my Average Learner's academic development on their past work and
observations. They can read and understand simple texts. In fact, the history textbook for this class
is within their reading level and so they can read and understood information therein. In addition,
they can listen and follow verbal instructions. For them, I do not have to repeat nor display my
instruction on the whiteboard nor through PowerPoint slides, but I do sometimes have to speak
slower to assure they can hear what I say. They can write simple and complex sentences, with a high
degree of clarity. (I will provide further information about this when I describe their language
development later in this paper). Collectively, they can collaborate in groups, preferably of no more
than three students in a group, because anything more is not conducive to learning. The reason they
work well together because most know each other from being in the same classes last year and the
on the same sport team–this class has many baseball players. Insofar, this has proven to be
advantageous, by having them in groups, and I could not be more satisfied with the results.
However, they are not perfect students. They have gaps in their speculative developments. One of
them is, comprehending primary sources. They are still learning to comprehend primary document

Nyc's 911 Archive Database Interlock Migrates New York City's 911 Archive Data – the Largest Emergency Call Center in the Nation Handling more than 11 million calls per year, NYC's 911 system is the largest in the nation. Founded in 1968, it is operated by the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department of NYC and the FDNY Emergency Medical Services, with the Office of Citywide Emergency Communications handling interdepartmental coordination. With approximately one billion files of 911 call recordings in an aging archive storage solution, when NYC's 911 archive data needed to be migrated to new storage, they needed an expert team. The Challenge NYC's 911 system was on an aging archive storage system that was reaching end–of support. The legacy equipment was experiencing numerous technical challenges and faced rapidly increasing support costs. The archive data had also grown exponentially, and there were multiple different conflicting data retention policies in place. "There was a tremendous amount of data, a rolling retention period, as well as numerous reports and explanations that had to be provided to the different stakeholders before the work even started," stated Vincent Guadagno, director of NYC public ... But, Interlock's custom program ran the data through data analysis, and parsed the files individually to meet the highly nuanced requirements of NYC 911's retention and legal hold policies. While parsing the data, Interlock also helped NYC 911 define and implement data retention policies that decreased the quantity of files by almost 50%, leading to lower storage and maintenance ... Although, there are still hidden documents that have yet to be discovered. When researchers or historian begin their journey of going through these documents, they will soon realize the difficulties of finding a never–ending answer to their objective. She visits the French National Archives, Library of the Arsenal, and the National Library to find information related to women during the eighteenth century. Farge compares archives as judicial reports because they share a similar preservation. For example, logbooks in the police departments are archived because it can be easily accessed for future investigations. Judicial reports are like archives discovered because people from the past may have left these documents or artifacts for future generations to discover to conduct research. The researcher continues to discuss several issues she came across when going through these archives. Before the creation of technology, many of the discovered documents "have deteriorated physically, and torn corners or margin nibble away by time can swallow words whole. The writing in the margins has often become illegible, and a single missing word can leave their meaning in suspense" (Farge 56). This was an issue that occurred frequently towards the researcher because some of them were incomplete and may have possible hold the answers to the questions. Many of these documents may have been exposed to elements, such as water, fire and others, that may have increased the deterioration rate. Luckily, technology has advanced over the years to save these documents onto the computer before disappearing forever. Another issue she endured was determining what was truth from fictional. Also, figuring out what is important and useless to her research. For example, an event may have caused one person to fabricate information to gain popularity, while another document may have left out important information. This would lead the researcher to look for more documents to compare information from one document to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has seldom discussed or accepted notions from the "other side", that is, those of women, and the ideals of feminism that come with these myths. In the theoretical piece, "Stealing the Language: The Emergence of Women's Poetry in America", Ostriker discusses and brings to light how women have reformulated and revised classical myths in an attempt to negate biased perceptions based on gender and archetypes, and brings focus on feminist views through the alteration and assimilation of female characteristics and the way society views them. To begin with, although the theoretical text covers several aspects of the poem, including the two roles and characteristics that both women and men embody; symbolized through Circe and her passiveness as the mud woman and her strength and power over man, and Odysseus who is active and strong yet also willing to submit to Circe and is methodically passive yet capable of resisting Circe's charms and magic. Although Circe is often overcome with Odysseus, she is simultaneously functioning as an independent and empowered woman who gives him, Odysseus, two prerogatives, to be "feared or to be despised", leading to the ultimatum that either she will have more power than him or he will make her his subordinate. However, the theoretical text, in light of the primary poem, fails to touch upon the aspect of the self awareness that Circe experiences and the ruthlessness of the story that is depicted and portrayed in greater detail and allegorical dialect in the primary source. Specifically, in light of the theoretical text that depicts and explains the "two islands" that represent both the writer's methodological narrative displacement and the two types of love that are being symbolized, the islands can also ... • 14. Archive Charlotte Farge Analysis What could be more essential to the historian than archives? Arlette Farge explains, "This is where our work begins." However, to many, the vast repositories of records and documents seem dull and lifeless. To the eager historian, the archives are a vast and treacherous ocean and seemingly impossible to wade through. In spite of this, they are seductive to Farge, enticing her to sift through the endless Paris police records of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. The "allure" is the innate potential of the archives to illuminate areas of the past, which would otherwise be forgotten. While historical knowledge is highly elusive and eternally incomplete, shades of the true past inhabit the archive's documents and records. She analogizes the archive to a thick forest. Within the eighteenth–century Parisian police reports are about singular events, containing the unique experiences of individuals –– the only recorded experiences of many. When she arrives, the reports are a jumbled mess, as sheer recollection is not enough. She must reconstruct the context of these events and rearrange them in the most useful way, one which will create a narrative of the past. In many cases, "the archive miniaturizes the historical object." The expressions of one's desires, fears, loves, and miseries can reveal larger social movements, describes Farge. She is not merely concerned about singular events, but the larger historical themes to which the events point. Undeniably, the experiences of the individual are inextricably linked to a surrounding society. Therefore, police reports (individually or collectively) hint at broader societal trends. One example she uses is an illiterate man, Thorin, who was imprisoned in the Bastille, and how his disjointed writings "retained a voice, an intonation, a rhythm." • 20. The Discovery Of The Guatemalan Archives The latter part of this course, we read Kristen Weld's book Paper Cadavers. This book captured the importance of the discovery of the Guatemalan archives. An intense amount of work was put into recovering approximately 80 million documents from the government after decades of internal warfare. This reconstruction of public memory was extremely important for those involved in recovering and sifting through the documents, the families and friends who lost people during the civil war, to Guatemala and the discovery also held significance international (Weld). A few years later in March of 2008 files were seized by the Colombian Armed Forced during a raid. These archives belonged to the insurgent group called The Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia People's Army or FARC. The files belonged personally to "Raul Reyes" (a leader of FARC) who was killed during the raid along with 24 other insurgent members (Walser). This led to some controversy about the files later on. The Colombian Armed Forces handed over the archives to Interpol, so they could be decoded and analyzed. These two sets of documents are different discoveries of public memory that impacted lives as public memory was reconstructed. Climate Analysis On Climate Archives There is significant evidence from studies based on climate archives that the Earth's climate about 10 000 years ago was very different from the present climate; it has changed a lot since the last glacial period which ended about 10 000– 12 000 years ago (Chappell, 1998). Hence, about 10 000 years ago the Earth was buried under ice sheets and it was much cooler than present temperatures (see Figure 1, Appendix) (Chappell, 1998). Along with the corals there is the foraminifera; also referred to as sea floor fossils. These sea floor fossils are often found in sediment cores and can reveal a variety of things about the past climate through ocean currents, temperature and oxygen ratios. Elucidating how archives are constructed by humankind – people with agendas and perspectives – he quickly dispatches with some common misconceptions regarding archives. The annals of amassed historic material have not, in fact, aged into apolitical constructions. Historical catalogs are not only political at the date of their inception, but are also shaped by broader social and cultural forces. With great disciplinary acuity, Sternhell provides an example of his argument, providing an insightful critique of a supposedly objective archive. Even less often, do I question the political perceptions of the organizers of chronicled archives. The sifters, and eventual arbiters of what historical ephemera should live on. How did archives form? They are not compiled by an unemotional artificial intelligence that omnisciently records all global human action. Moreover, to address the specific example provided by Sternhell, it becomes obviously that the victors of various wars and political squabbles possess more sway in how a historical record is remembered. The Union was victorious in the American Civil War, and thus it was the leaders of the Union who got to pose the seemingly apolitical presentation of history, which was obviously political in the very nature of its construction. • 51. Magazines Are to be Read and Studies as Primary Source... It is a well–noted fact, among periodical experts and students of print culture alike, that the word magazine, in English as well as French, bears the original meaning of "storehouse" (Scholes and Wulfman 29). Here, etymology provides valuable insight into the interdisciplinary nature of this field of study and the essential characteristics of the study itself which merit such an approach as is hereunder delineated. In viewing the early twentieth–century magazine as a repository of distinct yet reticular pieces of information, it is evident that special care must be given to the investigation of its contents. Among the most prominent concerns of modernist periodical research in that regard, according to the writers surveyed, is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to construct an effective means for studying periodicals, therefore, it would seem that deliberate effort must be given not only to the assembly and dissemination of unexpurgated copies of these texts but also to material categorization and searchability. One cogent statement by Latham and Scholes reiterates this simple truth: "the usefulness of a digital archive depends heavily on our ability to find things in it" (521). In order to further mitigate the debilitating effect that library cataloguing and anthologization have had on modernist periodical researching techniques, it is necessary to employ a system whereby works can be sorted according to their linguistic as well as bibliographic, or physical, features. Scholes and Wulfman propose a method for bringing about such an arrangement in their chapter entitled "Rethinking Modernist Magazines" (54–55). In closing, it is important to note that the conceptual approach described above–albeit promising– does not come without certain implicit restraints, perhaps the most notable of which is the pressing need for quality research through interdisciplinary cooperation. One writer proposes "the creation of humanities labs" in addition to the implementation of "tools and institutional structures necessary to engage the diversity, complexity, and coherence of modern periodical culture" (Latham and Scholes 530). Above all, research that is truly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. The Scientific Study Of Climate Archives Introduction Paleoclimatology is the scientific study of Earth's past climate using indirect data ("Paleoclimatology", 2015). Since the Industrial Revolution studying climate archives is important because anthropogenic effects have become a prominent factor in climatic variation and they allow scientist to get an idea of past climatic variation in order to predict future climatic trends (Redinger, 2006). The indirect indicators that are used in climate archives are known as climate proxies (Ruddiman, 2013). There are 4 main climatic archives which are ice, trees, corals and sediments however this paper will take an in depth look at ice and corals. The period of interest is the Holocene, which is 10000 years ago when both of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Glacial ice is created through the annual deposition of snow that piles up in continuous sequences due to vast plateaus (Bethan, 2014). There are 2 main ice sheets present on Earth today. The first one is located in Greenland and dates up to 125,000 years ago while the other is the Antarctic ice sheet that dates up to 800,000 years ago (Ruddiman, 2013). Ice thickness can provide clues about the local precipitation and thicker layers corresponds to greater snowfall which tells us about global temperatures due to the fact that more snow tends to accumulate at the poles during global warm spells. However, majority of the data about past climate is gained from ice cores, are produced when the ice sheets are drilled on the major axis of growth at about 4–5 inches in diameter and up to lengths of 1m in order to get a vertical core that can be stored for analysis. Ice cores are not limited to polar regions, they can be found on 6 of the 7 continents of Earth and can range in thickness from mountain glaciers to continental ice sheet (Ruddiman, 2013) (Figure 2). What Is Corporeal Archive Global Corporeal Archive Amanda Lynn Rabius COM/295 July 17, 2017 Randall Savely Have you ever heard a story from one of the physicians here at UT Health, or even an employee, of a time when a patient came in for a second opinion and didn't bring diagnostic images from the previous office visit? Or that one of the researchers needs a specific lab record but the patient doesn't remember where it was drawn at two weeks ago? We can start at the beginning. The corporeal archive database would be created through the University of Texas student's coursework, or extra–curricular. Meaning, the labor in development would be free. One of the goals in creation is to hold a large capacity of information. The system would be paperless and convert any other outdated document to digital form as well. Once established globally, all records ever created in the aspect of the body, from every association, would be submitted to the global corporeal archives' maintaining organization. This organization will automatically import the documents into the system, organizing them appropriately by the patient. Every individual record would include a photo of each person. The documents in each record can be information provided by the patient, including, but not limited to physician's notes. The papers will contain a variety of information on a patient's health or body history. Even personal items such as significant illnesses and medical conditions, lab findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Other fact–based data including history of drug abuse or alcohol use, and smoking, also physical exams, allergies, medications, and any adverse reactions. The Zero Waste Movement is a movement that I actively participate in and deeply value in my life. I certainly did not want to write a magazine about something I had no prior interest in. Not to say that creating a magazine about completely new information wouldn't be interesting in some way, but rather that I was able to really invest myself into the topic I chose because of my close relationship with the topic. Through the creation of Beyond the Mason Jar, I was also able to discover some qualities about the ZWM that I hadn't noticed before. I included a quote by Mother Teresa that I love and felt accurately expressed my purpose for the magazine. I love her use of the analogy, "I can cast a stone .... to create many ripples." I think one of the things that I lot of people either in or joining the ZWM is the struggle for perfection and impact (myself included). It can be really daunting when you see pictures of waterways overwhelmed by plastic debris in other developing countries or a video of a plastic straw stuck in the nose of a poor sea turtle (that is another story in itself). I think it is vital for the readers to realize that we can only do so much to aid in situations like those. However, I want to show them that the ripples we cast do make a difference. I have found that to be very true in my life. Every time someone tells me they think of me because of some plastic they threw away or something they did to be more sustainable, the fire in my heart grows exponentially. That is the power that I want the reader to realize they have. Next, the couple of advertisements that I included in my magazine are sort of akin to transitions. • 65. The Valley Of The Shadow Archives The Valley of the Shadow The Valley of the Shadow archives is an online database that has digitally archived diaries, letters, and newspapers from two neighboring counties, Augusta County, Virginia and Franklin County, Pennsylvania during the Civil War era in the United States. Separated by the Mason–Dixon Line, a line which marked the geography between southern slave states and northern free–slave states, disconnected the southern Augusta County and the northern Franklin County. The archives focus on the Pre–war, war time, and post war views of the Counties inhabitants based on religion, economy, family life, and their controversial views on slavery. These insights give modern day historians the ability to piece together what life was actually like for the residents of the opposing Counties. One of the most influential controversies between the north and the south is the abolition of slavery, the north being for the freeing of slaves, and the south being for the retention and expansion of slavery. The economic stability that slavery provided for southern states was a driving force for the southern front, while the concept of emancipation drove the northern front to fight for the abolition of slavery all together. This ultimately leads to the Southern succession from the Union and spawns the Civil War, thus separating Augusta and Franklin County. Therefore, the central idea of this essay is to show the opposing attitudes of Augusta County and Franklin County, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In nineteen thirty eight a survey was conducted on happiness in Bolton, dressed as a competition, this essay will look at three very contrastingly different primary sources from that survey. Primary sources offer the historian the chance to critically analyse the data within the text open minded. This enables the scholar a more refined view of what they are reading. Thus enabling the contents to be scrutinized thoroughly throughout without adding any other information. On first reading of the poster that initiated the survey, there are subtle references that would lead to the assumption that this is worth partaking in. The document states, 'Once more "Competitions" are trying to find out what Bolton thinks', this document would indicate that there indeed was more than one such competition in Bolton before the survey here mentioned. Obviously, as the Mass Observation website puts beside the title of the document, that this is indeed a hoax survey dressed up as a competition. It goes on to further the lie by stating, 'Write down what you think–never] mind about style and grammar–It's your own opinion that is wanted, ' , this is where the reader can make as many mistakes as he likes with grammar and spelling, although it could be argued that if the grammar and spelling was wrong, then the person who is judging the competition may not care, of note here is the fact that the person who is judging the competition is of ... • 73. Innovation Through Source Analysis For The Classroom Innovation through Source Analysis If teachers want to revolutionize the way that history or social studies is taught in the classroom, they must move away from the idea that history is a series of facts that need to be taught to students. Instead of simply giving students the answers to historical questions, teachers must impart the practice of historical inquiry to their students. This ability to think like a historian allows students to be active participants in all history lessons. Such a revolutionary transformation is only possible if teachers generate innovative lessons that propagate historical analysis in the classroom. At the same time, teachers are expected to adhere to the Common Core standards that require students to be able to read, understand, and utilize "complex informational texts" (80). In order to transform history in the classroom and adhere to these Common Core Standards, it is important that teachers understand the importance of source analysis in lessons, know how to choose and create age–appropriate adapted sources, and successfully incorporate such lessons into larger units that ensure students learn to think historically. To ensure that students are able to engage in the practices utilized by historians, teachers must provide students with the proper tools to do so. Since historical thinking takes practice, students need materials to practice with. Primary sources offer the perfect opportunity for such practice. In fact, according to ... They can read and understand simple texts. In fact, the history textbook for this class is within their reading level and so they can read and understood information therein. In addition, they can listen and follow verbal instructions. For them, I do not have to repeat nor display my instruction on the whiteboard nor through PowerPoint slides, but I do sometimes have to speak slower to assure they can hear what I say. They can write simple and complex sentences, with a high degree of clarity. (I will provide further information about this when I describe their language development later in this paper). Collectively, they can collaborate in groups, preferably of no more than three students in a group, because anything more is not conducive to learning. The reason they work well together because most know each other from being in the same classes last year and the on the same sport team–this class has many baseball players. Insofar, this has proven to be advantageous, by having them in groups, and I could not be more satisfied with the results. However, they are not perfect students. They have gaps in their speculative developments. One of them is, comprehending primary sources. They are still learning to comprehend primary document texts. For example, in the past, I had tried using length, a page long or more, and unedited primary documents. I had used George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Relationship Between Weather And Motor Vehicle Accidents Within this research proposal, I will be discussing my hypothesis that will determine the question I have for my final research study. This research study will gather information from archival data and will not have any contact with any participants. This proposal will discuss the types of archival data being collected, the variables that will be measured, the foreseen limits of this research study, and the procedure to intact the ethical principles of the population. I hypothesize that the number of motor vehicle accidents declared in North America will be higher with rain, fog, and snow weather conditions. For this research proposal I will be looking at completed studies and research to determine if there is a relationship between weather and motor vehicle accidents. I will also look at statistics, specifically Statistics Canada, data collection on vehicles driven and weather conditions specific to areas in North America. One variable that are being measured is the type of weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or fog. Another variable that is being measure is the amount and type of motor vehicle. These variables will be researched specific to North America areas. Many of the studies I am looking at are accessible through universities' library and Google scholar.
