Editor's Notes
How many of you have heard about “death by pptx”? (rise your hands if you heard it beafore)
and excel? (
Tableau?
Today, we are going to talk about data visualization and how
to use it to
t and c
But first we need to talk about... can you guess the missing word?
DATA!
To convince you need data
the thing is that data
looks like this
and
makes people feel like this (the name of this emoji is flat smile)
However,
to convince,
we need to make ppl feel like this
that is where visualziation can help
One way is visualiztion, a fancy word for charts and infographics
The 2nd problem is that there is a lot of bad charts out there!
Here is a small sample from the internet
100 most active twtiters (wrong chart for the job)
number of data sceintists per country (information overload)
and my favourite, charts with no information
(click)
information
I am a professor and I work at UAE University
so as an academic
I went on a quest!!! to find the resons
It took me 2 minutes of find a culprit
2:00
He is a a school drop out
never took a design lecture
yet he created excel
and
90% charts you will see in your time on this planet will be made by EXcel
But the epidemic of bad charts we endure is not all his fault...
there is a second reason and the culprit is us, the school system where
arts are spearated from sceinces.
a school drop out
never took a design lecture
yet
90% charts you will see in your time on this planet will be made by his software
But he is not the only one at faulthere,
we the educational system have blame too.
you see to do dv we need ds
but we also need...
design,
the problem is that people that make the charts , the data sceitists look liek this
and designers like this
and the go to differnt shcools
the specializations that teach ds dont like design and
design studies dont like ds
a part from very few exceptions.
when you make a chart tell me a story , why?
because ppl will rememebr more. example

be cool be fun “POP” culture
If u make a chart and none remebered it – did it happen?

Know the realtion between narratives sotries and data
Why do so many charts feel purposeless?
If your chart has nothing to say then it will feel purposeless
It works with grown ups too
#2 know the difference between data information and knowledge
fake data but efficient
before we said that if your chart does not advocate any narrative, it will feel purposless
Howver,
there is this thing called the fit,
if your chart does not fit the narrative, it will feel dysonant.
example:
i
is this data information or k ?

we just need one pixel –remeber on pixel.
one pixel

thunberg – I have credibility becuase I show integrity, by sailing –not flying; where as you say co2 is bad yet you do nothing to reduce it when you could.
