2. THE TRAILER:
• Voiceover of protagonist is typical of the teen drama genre as it delves into the mind of a
protagonist, and reveals narrative or character information that the audience may not have
been able to infer from just the video.
• Close up shots on characters introduce them to the audience
• Proximity of characters shows their relationship in the film; key for teen dramas as interpersonal
relationships and/or their conflicts are often the narrative focus
• The high school location of this film (and subsequent character's houses/neighbourhoods) is
stereotypical of teen dramas
• Editing increases in pace with shorter shot durations; follows the inevitable character journey of
all teen dramas with a struggling character as their life 'picks up'; longer shot durations at the
beginning of the trailer introduce characters
• All or most of the dialogue is just key lines; these are usually comedic, thought provoking or
reveal character or plot information
• Shot reverse shot and eyeline matches between characters show the conversation between
them and focuses on the relationship
• Sound effects are not focused on as much to retain realism in teen dramas; the dialogue and
soundtrack are the only important sounds, as focus is on camerawork, acting and narrative
• 'Handwritten' style of typography, which is typical of teen drama films
3. SUBSECTION- TITLES
As all these titles are constant
throughout the trailer this can
suggest that the normality of
everyone as everyone in the film is
the same; Charlie, the protagonist,
is trying to fit in and be a part of
this normality. The titles also link to
the characters hobby and job he
wants when he is older which is a
writer due to the typewriter font.
This font is especially linked to the
main character as he owns a
typewriter.
4. THE POSTER
In a large variety of the posters they use a Typewriter font which could
suggest that there is a link to writing within the film which could suggest
the social group which he is placed in within school.
"We Are Infinite" brings your attention to the poster as it is smaller writing
and also is used on many different variations of the poster. "Infinite"
could suggest how the characters shown are limitless which is an attitude
of teenagers.
The people on the poster are made to be assumed as the main
characters which introduces us to them and we can understand the
genre of the film due to the age of the characters (teens)
The trailer and poster use the colour scheme of Green which could
connotate the aspect of growth within the film which also can signify the
'wallflower' characteristic which appears to grow throughout the film.
Which could also suggest how the social hierarchy of this age group
works.
The second poster also shows how they use the colour of blue and
yellow to contrast the connotations of sad and happy, which is how a lot
of teenagers stereotypically feel. However, blue and yellow also mix to
create green following up the theme of growth.
"Critically Acclaimed Novel" this highlights how the film has already been
successful in book form which may contact teenagers more.
