Volume Calculation for Dry Lake ,example Zone 3 Area 1D
Methods 1 Using Upper and Lower Grids
1. Step 1 :
• To clip sampling data inside or close to excavation zone boundary
Sampling points and CIC Sampling points using ArcGIS
- Step 2 :
• To open zone3 Shapefile in Surfer ( to get fixed extent coordinates )
-Map
-New
-Base Map
- Step3:
• Save shapefile zone as BLN file in surfer to use it to Blanked (Clip)
other grids.
- File
-Export
-BLN File
- Step4:
• Create Upper surface Grid for Elevation from Topographic Survey
Level Spot points
- Grid
- Data
- Open NGL Excel file
- Select X,Y,Z
- Gridding Method
Kriging
- Fix Grid line
Geometry for Zone3
Extent
- Spacing 1X1 m
- Step4:
• Output grid for Upper surface
- Step5:
• Blanked ( clip ) Upper Surface Grid using Zone 3 BLN file
- Grid
- Blank
- Select grid to
blank
- Select BLN
- Step5:
• Output Upper Grid Blanked
- Step6:
• Create Grid from Lower Surface from:
Upper Surface Elevation – Contamination Depth = Lower Surface Elevation
- Grid
- Excel Cutoff Data
- Select Zone3
-Use X,Y, Contamination Level
- Use Same geometry and
spacing that used for Upper
surface
- Step7:
• planked ( clip ) Lower Grid using Zone 3 BLN file
- Grid
- Blank
- Select grid to
blank
- Select BLN
- Step7:
• Output Lower Grid Blanked
- Step8:
• Estimated Volume :
- Grid
- volume
- Select Upper
Surface
- Select Lower Surface
- Step8:
• Output Volume report
• Volume (Trapezoidal Rule) = 39854.94 m³
• Step1: Same methods
• Step2: Same methods
• Step3: Same methods
• Step 4: to create only 1 Grid from
(cutoff value selected by
environmental Team from Sampling
log)
Volume Calculation for Dry Lake ,example Zone 3 Area 1D
Methods 2 Using one grid created from Cutoff Value
Step 4: Output Grid
Excavation Depth
As total Contamination
value , not Elevation
value
- Step5:
• Calculate Volume : 38357
- Grid
- Volume
- Select upper surface from
Cutoff Grid
- Constant value is 0
- Grid
- Volume
- Step8:
• Output Volume report
• Volume (Trapezoidal Rule) = 38357.75 m³
Volume calculation for Contaminated Piles
• Export Topographic Survey data for Piles in excel file X,Y,Z
• Create surfer grid for each pile grid 5X5 or 1X1 m related to piles
boundary
• Create contour in surfer 0.1 m interval
• Show piles grid in 3D with contour
• Select contour line for base of pile
• Calculate volume from grid ( consider pile grid as Upper Surface and
base contour as constant Z value
• Pile Contour and 3D
- Base contour is 36.5
- So
- Grid
- Volume
- Piles grid is Upper surface
- Constant Z = 36.5

  • 19. - Step5: • Calculate Volume : 38357 - Grid - Volume - Select upper surface from Cutoff Grid - Constant value is 0
  • 20. - Grid - Volume - Step8: • Output Volume report • Volume (Trapezoidal Rule) = 38357.75 m³
  • 21. Volume calculation for Contaminated Piles • Export Topographic Survey data for Piles in excel file X,Y,Z • Create surfer grid for each pile grid 5X5 or 1X1 m related to piles boundary • Create contour in surfer 0.1 m interval • Show piles grid in 3D with contour • Select contour line for base of pile • Calculate volume from grid ( consider pile grid as Upper Surface and base contour as constant Z value
  • 22. • Pile Contour and 3D - Base contour is 36.5 - So - Grid - Volume - Piles grid is Upper surface - Constant Z = 36.5
