Abstract
Institutional digital repositories is the intellectual output of the staffs, students, faculties with its well
accommodated digitization, collections, preservation and dissemination. The main objective of the
institutional repository is to give right information to the right person .This papers mainly shows the list
of all open access digital institutional repositories in India that only deals with theses and dissertations
with their features, content type, language, collections, soft wares, services, subject coverage and other
characteristics. For this study the Directory of Open Access Repositories (Open DOAR) and the Registry
of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) have been consulted. Although there have lots of studies about the
institutional repositories in India but this study is only about open access theses and dissertation. This
paper is a very small step towards the great number of researchers who face the barriers finding their
needed study materials while researching. This paper explore the primary sources of information for the
researchers.
Keywords : Digital Repository, Information dissemination, Institutional Repositories, Open DOAR,
ROAR, Theses and dissertation.
1.Introduction
According to Cambridge dictionary the simple meaning of repository is “a place where things are stored
and can be found”. That means where the information is stored and can be retrieved whenever
needed(Khan & Das, 2008). When the repository is maintained and founded by any institutions with its
contribution then it is called institutional repository. But when the content of this repositories are digitized
and can be searched and retrieved from anywhere in the world then it is called digital institutional
repository. It is the organized, managed and well contributed collections of digital contents. Institutional
repositories are the storehouse of the intellectual contents of the staffs, faculties and students of the
institutions. It mainly collect, store and disseminate information. The institutions publish and disseminate
their contents as per their subject areas. In this information society this type of repositories help the
researchers to find and get their desired information for developing in research which is the great
objective of this repositories. Here researchers can easily access to this repositories(Prabhakar & Rani,
2018). Though their have two type of repositories like open access and closed access. Open access
contents are freely available but there have some restrictions and rules using closed access contents. It
opens a new door to the researchers for more research and develop the country.
2.Objective of the study
2.1. To make a list of the open access institutional repositories in India deals with theses and dissertations.
2.2. To show the subject coverage of the research in the country.
2. 2.3. To expose different types of services by the institutions.
2.4.To show the collections of the repositories.
2.5. To show the features of the repositories like soft wares, interface, search strategy etc.
3. Methodology
For doing this study we have consulted Directory of Open Access Repository(Open DOAR) and Registry
of Open Access Repository(ROAR). The list of institutions and all of these features have been taken from
the Open DOAR(Jeelani, Mir, & Wani, 2016).
There we found 33 such open access digital institutional repositories in India that conduct theses
and dissertations till Jan, 2018. The subject coverage, collections, search interfaces, soft wares ,
development, updation, consistency have been studied one by one(Tripathi & Jeevan, 2011).
4. Data analysis
According to Open DOAR there have total 3817 open access digital repositories in the world including
institutional, disciplinary, governmental and some are undetermined. In Asia there have 723open access
repositories. In India there have 81 such digital open access repositories. Among those 81 open access
digital repositories 68 are institutional open access repositories and out of those 68 institutional
repositories 33 repositories deals with theses and dissertations.
Fig: Statistics of digital repositories
5. Institutional repositories in India conducting theses and dissertations
The table given below shows that the 33 digital repositories in India is dealing with the content type
theses and dissertation. They follow different types of software like Dspace, Eprints etc. They have their
different subject coverage like social science, Health and medicine, Science general, Technology etc. The
table also mention the total collections and language of the contents. The most important is the location of
the repository that is URL and the holding institution who made it.
These all repositories provide theses and dissertation worldwide. Anybody can access those contents
anytime and from anywhere.

6. Software adopted by repositories
The 33 repositories adopted different types of repository software. Among those 33 repository 13
repository adopted Eprint software. Dspace is adopted by 19 repositories and 1 repository adopted Nitya
software.
Fig: Software adopted by different repositories
7. Language adopted by repositories
All the repositories adopted English language but except this the repositories also adopted Hindi,
Malayalam, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Kannada language.
Fig: Language adopted by repositories
8. 8.Collection of the repositories
The total collections of all repositories are 143510. The Institutional repository@VSL have highest no of
collections 18554. The dspace @ sdmcet repository have lowest number of collections 60. Research
Archive of Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (RAIITH), National Aerospace Laboratories
Institutional Repository (NAL Repository), Institutional Repository@CSIO
, Institutional RepositoryEprints @MDRF also provide full text access of the contents.
9.Subject coverage of the repositories
There have 21 subject covered by 33 repositories. This table2 is going to show the no and the percentage
of the repositories covered by these 21 subjects.
Table 2 Subject coverage by the Repositories

21 Earth & Planatory Science 1(1.17%)
*(Total frequency of the repositories 85)
So after observing the table it is clear that most of the repositories covers multidisciplinary subject. After
that mostly covered subjects are Science general and technology general.
9. 10. Collection accessibility
Out of those 33 repositories 5 repositories give full access to their metadata as well as full text document
but except 5 other 28 repositories give only access to their metadata.
Fig: Type of Collection accessibility
11. Findings
11.1.It is clearly understood that the research on Art & Humanities, Ecology & Environment, Business &
Economics, Education, Management & Planning, Ecology & Environment, Earth & Planatory Science
are very less. There have very less number of theses and dissertations in the institutional repositories.
11.2.Most of the contents are by English language and very few are regional languages like Hindi,
Sanskrit etc.
11.3. Most of the repositories use DSpace software that means they find some ease and usefulness of this
software than others.
11.4. In respect of the overall collection of all type of contents, the collection of theses and dissertations
are very less.
11.5.Most of the repositories are based on multidisciplinary subjects.
11.6. Some of the repositories are not properly accessed for their server problems.
12. Conclusion
From the above study we can get to know about the Indian institutional open access repositories dealing
with theses and dissertations. We can get to know the subject areas, language and other features of these
repositories. Repositories are very significant for higher study and research. They have lots of functions
in the society. There have lot of institutions in India who have their own repositories but for the lack of
management, quality control, willingness and finance those are becoming unusable. The institutions
should have the goal to publish and reuse their contents. It is the responsibility of the professionals and
10. also the Government to encourage and help those institutions for making a proper repository for making a
knowledge society and overall development of the country.
