Testicular cancer, or cancer of the testes, occurs in the testicles (testes), inside the scrotum. The scrotum is a loose bag of skin under the penis. Male sex hormones, testosterone, and sperm for reproduction are produced in the testicles. The testicles are a pair of male sex glands, also known as gonads.
Testosterone controls the development of the reproductive organs, and other male physical characteristics.

2. What is Testicular Cancer
• Testicular cancer affects the testicles of human males.
• The testicles are contained in the scrotum – which is a loose
bag of skin under the penis.
• When testicular cancer is discovered, it is essential to
diagnose the type of cancer cells.
• Like most other cancers, it can be treated if diagnosed at an
early stage.
3. Symptoms of the ailment
• A swelling and/or lump in one or both of the testes.
• Discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum.
• Pain in the lower abdominal area, groin, or lower back.
• Shortness of breath, coughing, or chest pain – in addition to
any of the above symptoms.
4. Types of testicular cancer
• The most common type of testicular cancer is known as germ
cell testicular cancer.
• There are two main subtypes of germ cell testicular cancer.
They are:
• Seminomas, which account for around 40% of all germ cell
testicular cancers.
• Non-seminomas, which account for around 60% of all germ
cell testicular cancers.
5. Stages involved in Testicular Cancer
The process of determining the spread of the cancer into the
other parts of the body is called staging.
Staging can be divided into three different levels depending on
the spread of the disease:
• Stage I cancer has not spread beyond the testicle.
• Stage II cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the abdomen.
• Stage III the cancer has spread further - to other parts of the
body. This could include the lungs, liver, brain and bones.
6. Types of Treatment
Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer, overall health
conditions and the preferences. The treatment options used can
be of three different types:
Surgical Treatment:
• Involves removal of the testicle and some lymph nodes.
• Can be used to treat both - seminoma and the nonseminoma.
7. Types of Treatment contd..
Radiation therapy:
• Uses high energy radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
• Is used to treat Stage 2 seminoma (tumor of the testes).
• Never used as primary therapy for nonseminoma.
Chemotherapy:
• Involves using anti-cancer drugs to kill cancer cells.
• Is usually prescribed to patients with advanced testicular cancer.
• Two commonly used drugs are cisplatin and bleomycin.
8. Advanced Cancer Treatment
• Testicular cancer CAN BE CURED.
• It is a long term treatment, which requires the patient to go
through regular check-ups and follow-ups.
• Remember, an optimistic outlook goes a long way!
