Reported speech

Lic. Cristina Morocho
• Also called indirect speech →reports what a
  speaker said without using his or her exact
  words.
• The most common verbs are said, told,
  indicated, mentioned, reported, to show that
  you are reporting information.
  – When the listener is mentioned, use tell; other
    way, use say.
• When reporting, backshift the verb in the
  indirect speech
Indirect questions
• Use ask in its simple past form.
• These questions end with a period, not a
  question mark.
  Mrs. Castro asked July if she was at the party
  the day before.
• Don’t use the auxiliaries (do, does, did).
• Use if or whether (or not) to introduce an
  indirect yes/no questions.
Indirect questions
• Use statement word order with yes/no
  questions.
         Subject + Verb + Complement.
• Use questions words to introduce wh-
  questions.
     “Where is your dad?” my mom asked.
     My mom asked where my father was.
• In addition to verbs, certain other words
  change in indirect speech.

• Examples:
Jeremy said, “My boss just promoted me”
Jeremy said his boss had just promoted him.

“Please be here for the meeting at 4p.m.”, Sally
  asked
Sally asked me to be there for the meeting at
  4p.m.

  • 2. • Also called indirect speech →reports what a speaker said without using his or her exact words. • The most common verbs are said, told, indicated, mentioned, reported, to show that you are reporting information. – When the listener is mentioned, use tell; other way, use say. • When reporting, backshift the verb in the indirect speech

  • 4. Indirect questions • Use ask in its simple past form. • These questions end with a period, not a question mark. Mrs. Castro asked July if she was at the party the day before. • Don’t use the auxiliaries (do, does, did). • Use if or whether (or not) to introduce an indirect yes/no questions.
