National School Meal Requirements
The National School Breakfast Program feeds 10 million children each day, and the
National School Lunch Program feeds more than 30 million students. However, the national
standards and meal requirements for these meals were created more than a decade ago. The planning
model used to develop current nutritional standards and related meal requirements is based on the
1995 Dietary Guidelines for American and the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances. Virginia A.
Stallings and Christine L. Taylor edited "Nutrition Standards and MEal Requirements for National
School Lunch and Breakfast Programs," a 2008 study sponsored by the Institute of Medicine of the
National Academies. In this 180 page document, Stallings et al. examine meal programs across the

Meal Time Definition
In my family, there is a rule that no electronics or books are allowed at the table when one is eating.
Meal time is a time to sit and relax, take a break from one's busy day etc. Since I have been sick the
past couple of days, my food intake has pretty much been soup, rice, oatmeal, and toast. Taking
breaths before I began eating helped me ground myself, helped me relax and helped me take a
minute to remember Who gave me this food. Before eating, I felt pretty hungry and I was almost
able to taste the food. During eating, I enjoyed the peace of just being able to focus on one thing. I
concentrated just on eating and tried to block everything else out. After eating, I felt satisfied and
not overly full. I felt I really noticed what I ate

When fabricated in accordance with military specifications, it should be able to withstand thermal
processing, or retort processing, and a wide temperature range sufficient enough to prevent package
damage during transportation and storage. Food packaged in a conventional can must be cooked
approximately twice as long as food contained in a retort pouch, as well. To sterilize the food
contained in either form of packaging, it must be brought up to approximately 245° F and kept there
for a specified period of time. Retort packages have a thin profile and a high ratio of surface area to
volume. Heat penetrates the food much more quickly when it only has to reach the inside of an
approximately half–inch–thick mass, rather than a much larger mass in a round can.
Coloring is also applied to either the exterior or interior surface of the polyester layer. While the
pouch is considered a "tough" package, it is not indestructible. The strength of the pouch
and its resistance to damage comes from its tri–laminar structure. Strength of the pouch has always
been an issue for the Military, and it's difficult for some to understand that plastic can be as strong as
steel, as metal cans are usually associated with strength.
Each of the three laminas has its own individual qualities that contribute to the success

Meal Selection Process
Monday
Today was a rough start because I had to fight the urge to consume anything else out side of my
budge. Today's food consumption cost was approximately $4.32. I drank a lot of water to help with
the feeling fullness.
Tuesday
Today I consumed the same amount and selection of food as yesterday because I want my body to
be able to adapt to the budget. Today's budget was also approximately $4.32.
Wednesday
Today I switched up the food selection because I was becoming a little bored eating the same thing
from the previous two days. Today actually wasn't bad with the amount I consumed I began to start
feeling full after each meal. The cost was approximately $4.05.
Thursday
Today's was the same as yesterday, usually eat tuna anyway so this was like an average day for me.
The cost was a little less because I eliminated the milk. Today's meal selection was approximately

Comparison and Trip to the Grocery store
I was amazed that I could actually complete this challenge with $5 a day to consume three meals.
Before doing this challenge my daily consumption cost was approximately $35–$45 per day. I just
completed an entire week with $30, which consisted of 15meals. The foods I consumed in my
normal diet were not all healthy options and there was a lot of wasted food. Before I even went to
the grocery store I used my Walmart app to search food items that I was willing to put in my budget,
and then went to the store to get them. That made my store tour a lot easier and

Meals In The Elizabethans
The Elizabethans, like us, had three main meals a day: breakfast, dinner, and supper. Breakfast was
eaten, usually between 6–7am, dinner at midday, and supper between 5–8pm. The kinds of food
eaten depended very much on wealth and status. Poor people, had humble and unvaried diets, the
rich ate well. They enjoyed all kinds of meat, including beef, pork, lamb, mutton, bacon, veal, deer,
fancy fowl, swan, and goose. Their diet also included freshwater and sea fish, salmon, trout, eel,
pike, sturgeon, crabs, lobsters, oysters, cockles and mussels. For the poor, they would eat bread with
butter, cheese, eggs, and pottage. Poor people could not afford red meat, like beef or pork, so they
eat white meat, like chicken, rabbit or hare, and birds they.

Mcdonald's Happy Meal Image Advertisement : The Ad Of...
McDonald's was created in April 15, 1955 at Illinois, Chicago by Ray Kroc who is known for being
a seller of Prince Castle brand. However, in 1979, McDonald's open their first Happy Meal which
was a small box with designs of hamburger, cheeseburger, and French fries in colors of red, green,
and other colors. It specifically targets kids mind because kids at a young age are attracted to bright
colors. McDonald's companies knew this and they began the Happy Meal. McDonald's Happy Meal
image advertisement convince boys to buy blue toys and girls to buy pink toys.
McDonald's marketers convince ethnicity groups especially by showing images in advertisements to
boys and girls in a young age in their specific color of choice. For instance, ""McDonald's is
typically strong among Hispanic consumers because kids are an important member of the dining
party, more so than in general–market consumers', and, 'Hispanic families are also more likely to eat
with others in the restaurant as a "dining occasion vs. a fuel stop, than are general–market
consumers'", according to Bob Sandelman, president of restaurant researcher Sandelman &
Associates. This means that marketers from McDonald's knows that a Hispanic family place special
importance to their children more than themselves; therefore, marketers of McDonald's tries to
convince them through advertisement that includes Spanish characters in case if kids or parents does
not fully understand the English language. It also seems that

What do you think of when you hear the phrase "meal plan"?
Is it a stack of plastic tupperware filled with identical meals of chicken and sweet potato? Is it a
tattered page out of your notebook with words like "salad" or "oatmeal" on repeat? Is a confusing
app on your phone that you downloaded but never use?
Does the whole idea of meal planning make you feel a little bored?
Well, I am here to change that.

Breakfast : The Most Important Meal Of The Day
Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. This is something we all have heard. Eat your
breakfast so the day can begin right. Breakfast is indeed a vital part of the day. However, I
personally don't care for breakfast food, I never have. Grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc. have
never been my "thing". I think it is the textures that get to me, or it could just be that I dread getting
up earlier than I have to. I am not a morning person at all. Most of the time I just skip breakfast. I
know overall that is not a good thing. I would soon learn just how important it is not to skip this
meal one bitterly cold winter morning. When you live in Michigan you get the luxury of the full
winter experience. There is glistening snow on the ground, the trees are bare and the cold winter
wind hits you across the face. Today felt colder than usual nevertheless, it was a typical weekend for
me. My mother dropped me off at the mall. I headed straight to the food court seeing as though I
didn't eat breakfast this morning. I am amazed by the Christmas lights and decorations. Christmas is
my absolute favorite time of year. It can't get any better than this. I am craving taco bell, so I walk
up to the counter and proceed to place my order, "Hi
Douglas 2
I would like to get...". Pause. What is happening? I am feeling dizzy. How did I get on a roller
coaster? Who is screaming? Why is it so dark?
The lights are so bright now. I am slightly perplexed. I was just ordering a nacho bell

Personal Narrative: A Simple Meal Of Grilled Cheese
Preparing a simple meal of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup was a rather time consuming,
frustrating experience, but it did give me a new perspective about the work that goes into a meal.
Last monday, I left track in a hurry, hoping to make it home in time for dinner, the one of my
creation. The kitchen was set for the meal, and the pots and pans sat eagerly as I prepared for the
cooking ahead. Luckily for me, the soup came from a can. All I needed to do was warm it up in the
pot, and wait for a timer to ring ten minutes. Up until that point, things were looking good. The soup
was thinning, and I was preparing to set the grilled cheese on the pan, which I heated on the stove as
I waited for the soup. I set

Meal Prepping
Meal prepping is a huge component of living a healthier lifestyle. Allowing yourself the time to
meal prep will tremendously help you with your busy weekly schedules. This also helps budget and
save money. Going out to eat may not seem like a lot but when you add it all up you could have
bought a week's worth of groceries. Also, by meal prepping you are creating everything yourself so
it is healthier than eating out.
Begin your meal prepping by writing down recipes that you want to make each week. After you pick
out the recipes you want to make you write down all the ingredients on a list. You then go to your
kitchen and cross off anything that you already have and don't need to purchase at the store. Then

The School Food Service Is Necessary For Meals Served By...
Our entire lives, food remains one of the few essential things required for survival. Food is one thing
that everyone needs, and because of this, food becomes an important part of our economy. Quality
food is necessary for everyone, but some families cannot afford to provide their children with either
healthy lunches or, in some cases, a lunch at all. The National School Lunch Program was put into
place to provide all children with a healthy lunch, but the program may not be economically feasible
or healthfully effective. The school food service is a business. It is a not–for–profit business, yet
most school food services are required to break even, so the economic pressures are very similar to
those any business faces. The seemingly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These estimates imply a painful financial shortfall when one considers the growing public pressures
to provide better and more nutritious school lunches (Choices). The free lunches for low–income
children, summarized above, are just one fraction of this business. Within the National School
Lunch Program, the school food operation also serves reduced–price lunches for moderate–income
children and "paid" lunches for children from better–off families. The "paid" lunches are still
federally subsidized to some extent as long as the meal meets the requirements of the federal school
lunch program. Meanwhile, the school food service also sells a la carte items, trading off the loss of
federal subsidy against the advantages of being able to sell more desirable or profitable products that
would not qualify as a reimbursable meal. The National School Lunch Program in different school
districts must compete against different things. The program will compete against vending
machines, lunches brought from home, and nearby stores and restaurants for schools with an open–
campus policy. All the food and beverage lines that compete with federal meal programs are
grouped together as "competitive foods" (Agriculture and Applied Economics Association). In
addition to costs, the school food business must consider how meeting the health guidelines will
affect revenues. School cafeterias will not be able to stay in business, regardless of

No matter how you choose to plan out your paleo meals, it won't take long for you to get the hang of
it and it will come as natural as picking up that take out menu. The option to go with a meal plan
service may prove to be a good way to get you into good habits. Try out a sample, free, or trial

knowledge of what you should and shouldn't eat, will help give you the necessary skills to plan
meals on your own in the future. 4.) Have Snacks Ready While it isn't a requirement of your paleo
diet to snack, most of us start searching for a snack at some point or another during the day or late
evening. Obviously, most of the go to snacks we have all come accustomed to grabbing from the
pantry are off limits. But, that doesn't mean you have to give up your daily snack all together; you
just need to switch it out for a healthier, paleo option. Try some of these simple switches: If you
normally go for a sweet snack, try going with a naturally sweet fruit. While fruits are still high in
sugar, they are natural sugars that are good in moderation. Eating a hand full of fruit is the simplest
switch, but possibly boring to some. With a little effort there are other options, such as, homemade
fruit leather, pure dark chocolate, homemade fruit popsicles, etc. For a savory snack substitute, some
popular options are nuts, baked zucchini chips, homemade trail mix, hardboiled egg, homemade

Skipping Meals On A Daily Basis
To begin with, since I came to Saint Leo University I have been skipping meals on a daily basis. It's
not because I want to but it's because my schedule is busy on a daily basis. However, when I do get
the chance to eat lunch I take advantage of it. Then when I'm really busy I usually grab a yogurt to
eat on the go or even a sandwich I can snack on. But, with me skipping meals on a daily basis is
very unhealthy and I'm making progress by making improvements with my eating habits. Firstly, I
began by creating a smart goal and used it motivation to help decrease the amount of time I skip
meals. I started eating breakfast in the dining hall or either in my dorm. I usually eat breakfast at
7:30 am or it varies depending on my schedule. For breakfast, I usually eat cereal, oats, or French
toast and sometimes an English muffin. I stay away from the bacon because pork bacon is too oily
and I like turkey bacon more. Sometimes, I would eat the original and strawberry low–fat yogurt
mixed with granola crumbs. Other than breakfast, sometimes I would eat lunch when my schedule is
less hectic. Normally, Monday's and Friday's is the two days that I defiantly eat lunch. This is
because on Monday's I don't have work in the afternoon, so I'm free from 12:20pm and on Friday's I
leave campus to go home. When I do eat lunch, I usually have small portions of rice, or macaroni
with chicken breast or chicken wings. The chicken is normally baked or stewed. Also, sometimes I
would have a salad

Eating Meals For A Healthy Meal
Whether you know it or not, everyday a great deal of decisions are waiting to be made by you. From
the time you wake up, to the time you go to sleep at night, you have made countless choices and
commitments. You decide how many times you're going to hit the snooze button in the morning,
when you're going to take your coffee break, which route you're going to take to get home from
work, all along with a dozen other selections. Ah! I failed to mention though, an important decision
you're faced with normally about three times each day; what are you going to eat? For some people,
their food choice may not be as healthy as others' and sometimes that's okay. But with obesity on the
rise like it is today, chances are their choice of a fattening meal isn't going to be the only time they
make it that week, let alone that same day. Why would someone choose a fattening meal over a
healthy meal though? Even though they might not even know what's inside their cheeseburger, side
of fries, and extra–large Coke that's all easier to find than a salad, they still have some choice in the
matter of their decision. Due to their lack of alternatives, people choose to eat unhealthy according
to David Zinczenko in his essay, "Don't Blame the Eater." Even while growing up as a teenager in
the 1980's, Zinczenko struggled to find alternatives. He claims, "lunch and dinner, for me, was a
daily choice between McDonald's, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Pizza Hut." For many
teenagers today,

Preventing Obesity among School Children through Healthier...
Preventing Obesity Among School Children through Healthier School Meals
Obesity and overweight are among the pressing health problems among children and adolescents in
the developed world.
Obesity refers to an excess amount of body fat whereas overweight can be measured by the BMI
index or height–weight ratio.
According to the WHO (2012), obesity and overweight are the fifth largest risk for global deaths.
Introduction
Obesity and overweight among children and adolescents has increased to more than a third of
children and adolescents (CDC, 2012).
Children and adolescents consume 700 to 1000 more calories per day than required (NCCOR,
2012).
School lunches mostly consist of fried and salty foods, which has prompted ex–military officers to
call for legislation on healthy school lunches (Spillius, 2010).
Problem Identification
Such children are likely to have higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later years
(CDC, 2012).
Obesity in children and adolescents can lead to greater susceptibility to the following in later years:
Asthma
High blood pressure
Bone and joint problems
Sleep apnea
Low self–esteem
Problem Identification
Children and adolescents often resort to unhealthy ways of controlling weight including: Crash diets
Binge eating, leading to bulimia nervosa Starvation Drugs, e.g. cocaine Laxatives
Hence, there is a need to develop healthy ways of controlling obesity in children.

Jewish Family Meal Analysis
In my experiences with food, most of them have been positive. Being from a Jewish family really
shaped the way that I look at food. For example, at a Passover Seder, we discuss each dish and its
significance in depth. One of the main foods served on this occasion is matzah which is defined as
unleavened bread and which represents the Jews having to escape for their lives before their bread
could rise. Another food that I encounter at a Seder is charoset, which represents the mortar in the
bricks that the Jews used when they were slaves in Egypt. This early introduction to food beings
used as symbols has led me to a deeper overall connection with what I eat on a daily basis. I have
come to realize that most foods I eat represent at least something whether it's significant or
insignificant. Something as simple as an apple represents a forbidden fruit or a pear can represent ...

I, in contrast, see myself as a food critic who tends to keep his opinions to himself. However, I do
have my opinions that affect my ability to enjoy certain foods. One of the times where this is an
issue occurs when I am at my grandma's house and she serves salad with the main meal. I personally
do not mind eating a nice, well–balanced salad, but when it comes her's, there is no lettuce in sight,
just a bunch of assorted vegetables mixed together in a bowl. All of that would be acceptable if there
was at least ranch dressing on the side, but all she has is Italian or Russian dressing, neither of which
I enjoy enough to counterbalance the rest of the ingredients. Even though I have very apparent,
strong feelings about the salad, I still never have the heart to tell her I don't want it or ask her to
supply some ranch dressing. Instead, I either eat some of it and secretly throw the rest out or I
quietly dump the salad onto my mom's plate because I know she will eat it if I

Preparing The Meal For A Meal
There are several factors to keep in mind as you plan your menu to cook for a crowd. The facilities
you will have available, the assistance you will have in preparing the meal, the purpose of the
function, your experience, and the budget. If you are cooking for a crowd as part of a fundraiser
choose food that is popular but inexpensive– such as pasta or pancakes. If you are inexperienced, or
will have very little assistance plan a menu that will be very easy to prepare such as chili or loose
meat sandwiches. If it is a more formal affair plan a menu should reflect the elegance of the

follow that will greatly reduce the chances of food borne illness. Be especially cautious during warm
summer months, as the temperatures make it much easier for bacteria to grow. Wash your hands
frequently with warm soapy water. If you will be serving in an outdoor facility make sure to plan in
advance so that you will have adequate water available for cleaning in order to prevent food borne
illness. Anti–bacterial hand sanitizer is also effective in outdoor settings if water is not readily
available. If at all possible use plastic gloves when handling meat, and change frequently. When
cooking for a crowd be careful that you do not cross contaminate food. Keep raw meat and raw meat
juices separate from all other foods during preparation. To prevent food borne illnesses make sure to
clean all surfaces, utensils and containers thoroughly that have come in contact with raw meat.
When cooking for a crowd you must use a meat thermometer. Do not risk food borne illness by
"eyeballing it". Heat all meat dishes to the proper temperature to kill bacteria. 160° is recommended
for beef, pork, and veal, 165° for poultry. Cook all meat completely at the site. Partial cooking prior

Analyzing The Essay 'The Magic Of The Family Meal'
The essay, "The Magic of the Family Meal" by Nancy Gibbs, was first published June 12 2006. In
the essay she describes why mealtime together is important. Gibbs Also goes on to tell why and its
effect on the participants. Having mealtime together is important to our social and cultural well–
being. For parents today it is important to have at least one meal together a day, having the children
help prepare the meal, and making conversation at the dinner table. Having at least one meal a day
together can have a large impact. Such as with manners, not only at the table but social cues. As how
to share or pass food with others. When having meals together there is also a better chance of
healthier foods, rather than unhealthier food choices. "Studies show that the more often families eat
together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders,
and consider suicide and the more likely they are to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their
vegetables, learn big words, and know which fork to use"(Gibbs 212). Next would be having the
children help prepare the meal. Helping prepare and cook the meal teaches children a valuable skill
for life. When helping prepare the food it can also get them to show and ... Show more content on

Having conversations helps children with social cues and speaking. Such as hearing adult speak
with larger words and in a more sophisticated way. Helps promote the children to speak more
thought out and better. It also promotes better confidence and feeling as if the parents are proud of
them. "And on those evenings when the mood is right and the family lingers, caught up in an idea or
an argument explored in a shared safe place where no one is stupid or shy or ashamed, you get a
glimpse of the power of this habit and why social scientists say such communion acts as a kind of
vaccine, protecting kids from all manner of harm" (Gibbs

Meal Times Research Paper
Meal times in television shows and movies generally are a time of family connection and merriment.
Meal times at my home are no longer the television or movie family time, they are now just
something that you need to do and most meals are spur of the moment what is there that is available
to eat. Meal times when I was young and when my kids were young were much more family
oriented. As the kids aged, were busy in activities and I was working crazy fluctuating hours the
meal times lost the family connection time. I find that I still like the family time of meal times, but
only when the kids are return home for visits. I do not care for buffet or cook your own steak houses

This holiday stress made more sense to me after reading Wansink's book Mindless Eating, when he
pointed out that the men's comfort foods were home cooked foods, not quick and easy; they do not
lend a hand with meal prep or clean up, it is no wonder they love holiday's. Meal's when I was a
young child were family oriented, however Mom worked full time and my older sisters were
generally in charge of meals Monday through Friday with Mom cooking on the weekends. As my
sisters grew up, the two oldest are seven and eight years older than I am, they became busy in
activities, got jobs and family time at meals lessened. By adolescents my sisters were out of the
house or working. My grandparents were deceased. My step dad was a truck driver and not at home
a lot and Mom started working two jobs, family meals were lost. I was involved somewhat in
preparation, not as much as I now wish that I was to know those family recipes, especially Mom's
potato salad. I had two sons, so they rarely helped cook, they did like to bake with me and there
were certain things that they had to take turns at doing (frosting or decorating baked goods, filling

Freezer Meal Research Paper
Title: Freezer Meals
Introduction
Its 3'oclock, the kids will be home from school soon, you have to take one to basketball, the other to
soccer practice, and feed your spouse when they arrive home. You don't want to spend hours
cooking a healthy meal but what choice do you have? The children need to eat something healthy
and your spouse will want a hot meal on the table when they arrive home after working a grueling 8
hour shift. You look in the pantry, everything located there is not very healthy or will take hours to
prepare and make. You could run down to the local hamburger fast food place, but the food they
serve is not very good, and definitely not healthy, also after a while it becomes very expensive if you
were to do this every time you had a day like this. Then something reminds you, there are bread
buns in the bread box, then there is that pulled pork BBQ that you made way to much of two months
ago sitting in a baggie in the freezer. There is your dinner! The family will be happy and you can
throw it on the stove and cook a quick meal.

Freezer meals are not just those quick little TV dinners you buy at the supermarket with your meat,
vegetable, and maybe a chewy brownie. Freezer meals are much more than that. These are meals
where you're able to prepare several healthy (or non–healthy) foods and put them in your deep
freeze (or refrigerator/freezer combo) for a day later or months later. You can take these meals out
whenever you need. They are quick solution when unexpected guests come over and you wish to
offer them food. In most cases most freezer meals are able to be quickly thawed out and cooked on
the stove or in the oven, and are on your table in less than an

The 's Dilemm A Natural History Of Four Meals
How well do you know about the food you eat? Why is it so hard to choose what to eat and what to
buy? Modern people can barely make choices about what is good to eat and buy unless following
the expert's advises. However, there is one man, Michael Pollan, wrote "Omnivore's Dilemma: A
Natural History of Four Meals", published in 2006, and he wants to persuade general public to
rethink their food choices and relation with food, and provoke their awareness of eating. Pollan
builds up his credibility by approaching the question through various perspectives, and by critically
analyzing the issue of eating disorder. To illustrate his claims, Pollan explains his key words of his
work via his narratives. He, however, does not figure out any practicable solutions to deal with the
omnivore's dilemma. In his book, Pollan first sets the stage by delineating the eating habits changes
in 1970s and 2000s. He then emphasizes the relationship between food and culture, and the
contraction between French paradox and American paradox further illuminates his perspective.
Pollan soon outlines the concept of omnivore's dilemma as well as strengthens his viewpoint that
American eating disorder is caused by lack of a stable cultural tradition. To more completely
demonstrating his belief, he classifies the four meals into three principal food chains, the industrial,
the organic, and the hunter–gather. At the end, he states this book is about the pleasures of knowing
your own eating, and urges

Sacrifice Meals In Prisons
Prison meals are one of the most mysterious meals to eat. Most times people believe that they are
unhealthy because of the look of the meals or the fact that inmates go starving. As time goes on, the
prison population has increase, forcing healthy prison meals to become cheaper and portion sizes to
decrease.
As unhealthy as they seem, prison foods are "relatively nutritious" (Barclay 6). Most of the foods in
prison are have vitamins and nutrition which are healthy. Prisons serve meats, cereal, vegetables,
fruits, and more to their inmates. However, they have to start ordering more and more of these meals
because " prison population has increased so enormously over the last 40 years, driving the cost per
meal... all the way down to $2.30"(Barclay

Abstract
Depending on the nutritional goals needing to be met, each institution will have a menu specifically
tailored to meet their needs putting into consideration the factors that can determine how a meal is
planned and served. Factors include the location of the institution, amount of people to be served,
culinary guidelines as put forth by federal mandates or state, cost, and social class. An example of
this statement is: Hawaii includes white rice in their McDonald 's plate, whereas in the mainland you
will find potatoes.

Thanksgiving Meal Research Paper
Early one November morning a woman stared at me with utter disbelief, tears of gratitude streaming
down her cheeks."Thank you," she mouthed silently to me, clutching her son to her chest. I was
proud knowing that, because of my efforts, her family and many more who struggle with poverty
would be able to share a Thanksgiving meal. I knew that many children in my community would not
be able to celebrate the holiday as others might because their parents could not afford to buy food
items, and so as Vice President of a community service club called Interact, I was inspired to
provide these children with a Thanksgiving dinner. The club officers and I sat crowded around our
adviser's desk brainstorming how we would collect ingredients. We decided

The Most Memorable Meal Essay
The Most Memorable Meal
As a food lover and adventurous eater, I've certainly eaten so many kinds of food from many
countries around the world. And I have a lot of good and bad moments related to food. However,
when you ask me about the most memorable meal that I have eaten in my life, perhaps the first thing
that appears in my mind is my daddy's soup.
It was 10 years ago, when I was just a little boy. At that time, my mom had so much work at her
office and she just couldn't come back home until 9 p.m. In my family, my mom was the only one
who could prepare food and cook. So when she called my dad and said that she couldn't come back
home early to cook a meal for me and my father, we thought that we were having the biggest

And I was so surprised about my dad's soup. All my thoughts about a great meal were taken down.
The soup was not as delicious as it looked, it tasted so weird: at first, I felt it so salty, after a while, it
tasted so spicy. After tasting the first sip, I looked at my dad and smiled. He just thought that he was
successful with his soup until he tried his first sip. Then he knew how his soup was and he said
"Sorry son, I tried my best, maybe we can wait for mom to come back home and cook dinner for
us." As soon as he finished speaking, I took the spoon, continued eating the soup and smiled. I know
the soup was not good, but it was from my dad, from all his love for me. I don't know if my dad
knew what I was thinking or not, or maybe he thought that I was so hungry to eat everything even
though it tasted too bad. My dad was so surprised about my act for a while, and he continued to eat
the soup with me. We both had a great time together, eating and talking with each other about bad
things, good things at work and school. After that, my mom finally came home. She looked so tired
from her work, but she still smiled and looked at me and my dad while both of us were eating soup.
She surely knew my dad made something for me and she slowly went forward to the table and
started tasting the soup. After her tasting, not a single word, she hugged both of us with her slender
arms and also with all her heart. This

meal, fish meal and soybean meal without amino acid supplementation in Nile tilapia Oreochromis
niloticus diets A. Suloma O. M. El–Husseiny M. I. Hassane R. S. Mabroke

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) as a substitute
for fish meal (FM) or soybean meal (SBM) in Nile tilapia fry diets. Triplicate groups of fish (initial
body weight 2.30 g ± 0.01) were fed seven isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets formulated to contain
30 % crude protein and 19.70 kJ g–1 gross energy for 8 weeks. The control diet (CD) contained 22
% local FM and 30 % SBM, whereas in the other six diets, HFM replaced 33, 66 or 100 % of FM or
SBM. The best weight gain
(11.46), specific growth rate (3.14) and feed conversion ratio (1.24) of tilapia fry fed
SBM33%, CD, FM33% and SBM66% diets were exhibited. Final body weight and protein retention
increased in a linear pattern with increasing amino acids in the experimental diets with the exception
of leucine and valine. The results indicated that good–quality HFM can successfully replace FM or
SBM by up to 33 and 66 %, respectively, in Nile tilapia fry diets without compromising growth and
protein utilization. The results also support the benefits of combining different sources of plant and
animal proteins in Nile tilapia diets.

Meals On Wheels Essay
Home–delivered meals are designed to provide nutritious meals to homebound senior citizens,
particularly those that live alone. These meal programs can improve the life and health of
vulnerable, at–risk seniors within American communities. Meals on Wheels programs are carefully
regulated because of the potential danger of contamination of the food, so therefore only licensed
food preparers who meet both nutrition and sanitary standards set by state and federal regulations
can provide the meals (Wong Meyer, 1993, p. 335). Meals must be maintained at the correct hot
and cold temperatures and delivered within two hours of preparation. Typically, these programs use

For many isolated elderly individuals, the driver may be the only regular personal contact that they
have with the exception of contact through the telephone (Wong Meyer, 1993). For the health and
safety of these isolated seniors, the deliverers of the meals will be trained in CPR and first aid, as
well as to judge the general condition of the people to whom they are delivering the meals (Wong
Meyer, 1993). First aid and CPR classes will be offered through free programs given by local
ambulance services and their educational departments.
Proposed Budget Funds for the Scioto County Meals on Wheels programs would come from federal,
state, and local grants designated for nutrition for senior citizens, as well as donations from private
donors. Fundraisers will also be held to help with the costs of this program. Although, this would be
a program based on volunteerism, the main cost for the program would include the food cost of meal
preparation and fuel for the vehicles of the volunteer delivery personnel. Federal/State/Local Grants.
There are many ways to apply for monies for nutrition programs for the elderly. Federal grants can
be accessed through www.grants.gov or through www.usa.gov/benefits–grants–loans . The AARP
Foundation is another organization that provides grants to fund nutrition programs for American
senior citizens. These grants can be accessed through their

This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in
Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate
in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I

These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to
volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she

After all the meals were delivered, we went back to Indiana University Medical Center and dropped
off the heater and cooler we used to store the meals.
There was one man I talked to in particular that sticks out in my mind. And we didn't even deliver to
him. When we first got to IU Medical Center, we had to wait about 30 minutes for the food to be
brought to us. While we waited, a man about 75 years old started talking to us. He told us about how
his wife had died eleven years ago and after she died, he started volunteering at Meals on Wheels
every day for the past ten years. He explained that his wife had a disease that got so severe that she
was put in an assisted living home. The particular assisted living home she was in had meals for her,
but were expensive. So her husband found Meals on Wheels. The couple got themselves each two
meals a day and had lunch and dinner together every day. After the man's wife died, he started
delivering the meals to people who are not healthy and able to get out and go shopping for meals.
This man was such a sweet man. This man is doing something that Jesus would have done. Even at
his old age, he still takes time every day to help somebody else out besides himself, someone less
fortunate and unable. This man sacrifices at least three hours a day delivering meals to people that
he would not have known otherwise. This man made an impact on my life. He showed me that even

  • 13. Meal Time Definition In my family, there is a rule that no electronics or books are allowed at the table when one is eating. Meal time is a time to sit and relax, take a break from one's busy day etc. Since I have been sick the past couple of days, my food intake has pretty much been soup, rice, oatmeal, and toast. Taking breaths before I began eating helped me ground myself, helped me relax and helped me take a minute to remember Who gave me this food. Before eating, I felt pretty hungry and I was almost able to taste the food. During eating, I enjoyed the peace of just being able to focus on one thing. I concentrated just on eating and tried to block everything else out. After eating, I felt satisfied and not overly full. I felt I really noticed what I ate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When fabricated in accordance with military specifications, it should be able to withstand thermal processing, or retort processing, and a wide temperature range sufficient enough to prevent package damage during transportation and storage. Food packaged in a conventional can must be cooked approximately twice as long as food contained in a retort pouch, as well. To sterilize the food contained in either form of packaging, it must be brought up to approximately 245° F and kept there for a specified period of time. Retort packages have a thin profile and a high ratio of surface area to volume. Heat penetrates the food much more quickly when it only has to reach the inside of an approximately half–inch–thick mass, rather than a much larger mass in a round can. Coloring is also applied to either the exterior or interior surface of the polyester layer. While the pouch is considered a "tough" package, it is not indestructible. The strength of the pouch and its resistance to damage comes from its tri–laminar structure. Strength of the pouch has always been an issue for the Military, and it's difficult for some to understand that plastic can be as strong as steel, as metal cans are usually associated with strength. Each of the three laminas has its own individual qualities that contribute to the success ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, in 1979, McDonald's open their first Happy Meal which was a small box with designs of hamburger, cheeseburger, and French fries in colors of red, green, and other colors. It specifically targets kids mind because kids at a young age are attracted to bright colors. McDonald's companies knew this and they began the Happy Meal. McDonald's Happy Meal image advertisement convince boys to buy blue toys and girls to buy pink toys. McDonald's marketers convince ethnicity groups especially by showing images in advertisements to boys and girls in a young age in their specific color of choice. For instance, ""McDonald's is typically strong among Hispanic consumers because kids are an important member of the dining party, more so than in general–market consumers', and, 'Hispanic families are also more likely to eat with others in the restaurant as a "dining occasion vs. a fuel stop, than are general–market consumers'", according to Bob Sandelman, president of restaurant researcher Sandelman & Associates. This means that marketers from McDonald's knows that a Hispanic family place special importance to their children more than themselves; therefore, marketers of McDonald's tries to convince them through advertisement that includes Spanish characters in case if kids or parents does not fully understand the English language. Is it a stack of plastic tupperware filled with identical meals of chicken and sweet potato? Is it a tattered page out of your notebook with words like "salad" or "oatmeal" on repeat? Is a confusing app on your phone that you downloaded but never use? Does the whole idea of meal planning make you feel a little bored? Well, I am here to change that. As a nutritionist, prioritizing my health is a big part of my daily life as well as what I teach to others. I have seen people who have struggled with "staying on track" for years, make major and lasting improvements in their diet simply by getting into the habit of meal planning. • 47. Breakfast : The Most Important Meal Of The Day Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. This is something we all have heard. Eat your breakfast so the day can begin right. Breakfast is indeed a vital part of the day. However, I personally don't care for breakfast food, I never have. Grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc. have never been my "thing". I think it is the textures that get to me, or it could just be that I dread getting up earlier than I have to. I am not a morning person at all. Most of the time I just skip breakfast. I know overall that is not a good thing. I would soon learn just how important it is not to skip this meal one bitterly cold winter morning. When you live in Michigan you get the luxury of the full winter experience. There is glistening snow on the ground, the trees are bare and the cold winter wind hits you across the face. Today felt colder than usual nevertheless, it was a typical weekend for me. My mother dropped me off at the mall. I headed straight to the food court seeing as though I didn't eat breakfast this morning. I am amazed by the Christmas lights and decorations. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year. It can't get any better than this. I am craving taco bell, so I walk up to the counter and proceed to place my order, "Hi Douglas 2 I would like to get...". Pause. What is happening? I am feeling dizzy. How did I get on a roller coaster? Who is screaming? Why is it so dark? The lights are so bright now. I am slightly perplexed. I was just ordering a nacho bell ... Last monday, I left track in a hurry, hoping to make it home in time for dinner, the one of my creation. The kitchen was set for the meal, and the pots and pans sat eagerly as I prepared for the cooking ahead. Luckily for me, the soup came from a can. All I needed to do was warm it up in the pot, and wait for a timer to ring ten minutes. Up until that point, things were looking good. This also helps budget and save money. Going out to eat may not seem like a lot but when you add it all up you could have bought a week's worth of groceries. • 59. The School Food Service Is Necessary For Meals Served By... Our entire lives, food remains one of the few essential things required for survival. Food is one thing that everyone needs, and because of this, food becomes an important part of our economy. Quality food is necessary for everyone, but some families cannot afford to provide their children with either healthy lunches or, in some cases, a lunch at all. The National School Lunch Program was put into place to provide all children with a healthy lunch, but the program may not be economically feasible or healthfully effective. The school food service is a business. It is a not–for–profit business, yet most school food services are required to break even, so the economic pressures are very similar to those any business faces. The seemingly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These estimates imply a painful financial shortfall when one considers the growing public pressures to provide better and more nutritious school lunches (Choices). The free lunches for low–income children, summarized above, are just one fraction of this business. Within the National School Lunch Program, the school food operation also serves reduced–price lunches for moderate–income children and "paid" lunches for children from better–off families. The "paid" lunches are still federally subsidized to some extent as long as the meal meets the requirements of the federal school lunch program. Meanwhile, the school food service also sells a la carte items, trading off the loss of federal subsidy against the advantages of being able to sell more desirable or profitable products that would not qualify as a reimbursable meal. The National School Lunch Program in different school districts must compete against different things. The program will compete against vending machines, lunches brought from home, and nearby stores and restaurants for schools with an open– campus policy. All the food and beverage lines that compete with federal meal programs are grouped together as "competitive foods" (Agriculture and Applied Economics Association). In addition to costs, the school food business must consider how meeting the health guidelines will affect revenues. School cafeterias will not be able to stay in business, regardless of ... • 63. A Meal Plan For A Meals No matter how you choose to plan out your paleo meals, it won't take long for you to get the hang of it and it will come as natural as picking up that take out menu. The option to go with a meal plan service may prove to be a good way to get you into good habits. Try out a sample, free, or trial program and see what works best for you and your household. This, paired with some good paleo knowledge of what you should and shouldn't eat, will help give you the necessary skills to plan meals on your own in the future. 4.) Have Snacks Ready While it isn't a requirement of your paleo diet to snack, most of us start searching for a snack at some point or another during the day or late evening. Obviously, most of the go to snacks we have all come accustomed to grabbing from the pantry are off limits. But, that doesn't mean you have to give up your daily snack all together; you just need to switch it out for a healthier, paleo option. Try some of these simple switches: If you normally go for a sweet snack, try going with a naturally sweet fruit. While fruits are still high in sugar, they are natural sugars that are good in moderation. Eating a hand full of fruit is the simplest switch, but possibly boring to some. With a little effort there are other options, such as, homemade fruit leather, pure dark chocolate, homemade fruit popsicles, etc. For a savory snack substitute, some popular options are nuts, baked zucchini chips, homemade trail mix, hardboiled egg, homemade beef ... • 71. Skipping Meals On A Daily Basis To begin with, since I came to Saint Leo University I have been skipping meals on a daily basis. It's not because I want to but it's because my schedule is busy on a daily basis. However, when I do get the chance to eat lunch I take advantage of it. Then when I'm really busy I usually grab a yogurt to eat on the go or even a sandwich I can snack on. But, with me skipping meals on a daily basis is very unhealthy and I'm making progress by making improvements with my eating habits. Firstly, I began by creating a smart goal and used it motivation to help decrease the amount of time I skip meals. I started eating breakfast in the dining hall or either in my dorm. I usually eat breakfast at 7:30 am or it varies depending on my schedule. For breakfast, I usually eat cereal, oats, or French toast and sometimes an English muffin. I stay away from the bacon because pork bacon is too oily and I like turkey bacon more. Sometimes, I would eat the original and strawberry low–fat yogurt mixed with granola crumbs. Other than breakfast, sometimes I would eat lunch when my schedule is less hectic. Normally, Monday's and Friday's is the two days that I defiantly eat lunch. This is because on Monday's I don't have work in the afternoon, so I'm free from 12:20pm and on Friday's I leave campus to go home. When I do eat lunch, I usually have small portions of rice, or macaroni with chicken breast or chicken wings. The chicken is normally baked or stewed. Also, sometimes I would have a salad ... • 75. Eating Meals For A Healthy Meal Whether you know it or not, everyday a great deal of decisions are waiting to be made by you. From the time you wake up, to the time you go to sleep at night, you have made countless choices and commitments. You decide how many times you're going to hit the snooze button in the morning, when you're going to take your coffee break, which route you're going to take to get home from work, all along with a dozen other selections. Ah! I failed to mention though, an important decision you're faced with normally about three times each day; what are you going to eat? For some people, their food choice may not be as healthy as others' and sometimes that's okay. But with obesity on the rise like it is today, chances are their choice of a fattening meal isn't going to be the only time they make it that week, let alone that same day. Why would someone choose a fattening meal over a healthy meal though? Even though they might not even know what's inside their cheeseburger, side of fries, and extra–large Coke that's all easier to find than a salad, they still have some choice in the matter of their decision. Due to their lack of alternatives, people choose to eat unhealthy according to David Zinczenko in his essay, "Don't Blame the Eater." Even while growing up as a teenager in the 1980's, Zinczenko struggled to find alternatives. He claims, "lunch and dinner, for me, was a daily choice between McDonald's, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Pizza Hut." For many teenagers today, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Preventing Obesity Among School Children through Healthier School Meals Obesity and overweight are among the pressing health problems among children and adolescents in the developed world. Obesity refers to an excess amount of body fat whereas overweight can be measured by the BMI index or height–weight ratio. According to the WHO (2012), obesity and overweight are the fifth largest risk for global deaths. Introduction Obesity and overweight among children and adolescents has increased to more than a third of children and adolescents (CDC, 2012). Children and adolescents consume 700 to 1000 more calories per day than required (NCCOR, 2012). School lunches mostly consist of fried and salty foods, which has prompted ex–military officers to call for legislation on healthy school lunches (Spillius, 2010). Problem Identification Such children are likely to have higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later years (CDC, 2012). Obesity in children and adolescents can lead to greater susceptibility to the following in later years: Asthma High blood pressure Bone and joint problems Sleep apnea Low self–esteem Problem Identification Children and adolescents often resort to unhealthy ways of controlling weight including: Crash diets Binge eating, leading to bulimia nervosa Starvation Drugs, e.g. cocaine Laxatives

  • 92. Jewish Family Meal Analysis In my experiences with food, most of them have been positive. Being from a Jewish family really shaped the way that I look at food. For example, at a Passover Seder, we discuss each dish and its significance in depth. One of the main foods served on this occasion is matzah which is defined as unleavened bread and which represents the Jews having to escape for their lives before their bread could rise. Another food that I encounter at a Seder is charoset, which represents the mortar in the bricks that the Jews used when they were slaves in Egypt. This early introduction to food beings used as symbols has led me to a deeper overall connection with what I eat on a daily basis. I have come to realize that most foods I eat represent at least something whether it's significant or insignificant. Something as simple as an apple represents a forbidden fruit or a pear can represent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I, in contrast, see myself as a food critic who tends to keep his opinions to himself. However, I do have my opinions that affect my ability to enjoy certain foods. One of the times where this is an issue occurs when I am at my grandma's house and she serves salad with the main meal. I personally do not mind eating a nice, well–balanced salad, but when it comes her's, there is no lettuce in sight, just a bunch of assorted vegetables mixed together in a bowl. All of that would be acceptable if there was at least ranch dressing on the side, but all she has is Italian or Russian dressing, neither of which I enjoy enough to counterbalance the rest of the ingredients. Even though I have very apparent, strong feelings about the salad, I still never have the heart to tell her I don't want it or ask her to supply some ranch dressing. Instead, I either eat some of it and secretly throw the rest out or I quietly dump the salad onto my mom's plate because I know she will eat it if I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 96. Preparing The Meal For A Meal There are several factors to keep in mind as you plan your menu to cook for a crowd. The facilities you will have available, the assistance you will have in preparing the meal, the purpose of the function, your experience, and the budget. If you are cooking for a crowd as part of a fundraiser choose food that is popular but inexpensive– such as pasta or pancakes. If you are inexperienced, or will have very little assistance plan a menu that will be very easy to prepare such as chili or loose meat sandwiches. Cooking for a Crowd–Preventing Food Borne Illness. There are some basic rules to follow that will greatly reduce the chances of food borne illness. Be especially cautious during warm summer months, as the temperatures make it much easier for bacteria to grow. Wash your hands frequently with warm soapy water. If you will be serving in an outdoor facility make sure to plan in advance so that you will have adequate water available for cleaning in order to prevent food borne illness. Anti–bacterial hand sanitizer is also effective in outdoor settings if water is not readily available. If at all possible use plastic gloves when handling meat, and change frequently. When cooking for a crowd be careful that you do not cross contaminate food. Keep raw meat and raw meat juices separate from all other foods during preparation. To prevent food borne illnesses make sure to clean all surfaces, utensils and containers thoroughly that have come in contact with raw meat. When cooking for a crowd you must use a meat thermometer. Do not risk food borne illness by "eyeballing it". Heat all meat dishes to the proper temperature to kill bacteria. 160° is recommended for beef, pork, and veal, 165° for poultry. In the essay she describes why mealtime together is important. Gibbs Also goes on to tell why and its effect on the participants. Having mealtime together is important to our social and cultural well– being. For parents today it is important to have at least one meal together a day, having the children help prepare the meal, and making conversation at the dinner table. Having at least one meal a day together can have a large impact. Such as with manners, not only at the table but social cues. As how to share or pass food with others. When having meals together there is also a better chance of healthier foods, rather than unhealthier food choices. "Studies show that the more often families eat together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, and consider suicide and the more likely they are to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their vegetables, learn big words, and know which fork to use"(Gibbs 212). Modern people can barely make choices about what is good to eat and buy unless following the expert's advises. However, there is one man, Michael Pollan, wrote "Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals", published in 2006, and he wants to persuade general public to rethink their food choices and relation with food, and provoke their awareness of eating. Pollan builds up his credibility by approaching the question through various perspectives, and by critically analyzing the issue of eating disorder. To illustrate his claims, Pollan explains his key words of his work via his narratives. He, however, does not figure out any practicable solutions to deal with the omnivore's dilemma. In his book, Pollan first sets the stage by delineating the eating habits changes in 1970s and 2000s. He then emphasizes the relationship between food and culture, and the contraction between French paradox and American paradox further illuminates his perspective. Pollan soon outlines the concept of omnivore's dilemma as well as strengthens his viewpoint that American eating disorder is caused by lack of a stable cultural tradition. To more completely demonstrating his belief, he classifies the four meals into three principal food chains, the industrial, the organic, and the hunter–gather. At the end, he states this book is about the pleasures of knowing your own eating, and urges ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He just thought that he was successful with his soup until he tried his first sip. Then he knew how his soup was and he said "Sorry son, I tried my best, maybe we can wait for mom to come back home and cook dinner for us." As soon as he finished speaking, I took the spoon, continued eating the soup and smiled. I know the soup was not good, but it was from my dad, from all his love for me. We both had a great time together, eating and talking with each other about bad things, good things at work and school. After that, my mom finally came home. El–Haroun Received: 11 October 2013 / Accepted: 15 January 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014 Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) as a substitute for fish meal (FM) or soybean meal (SBM) in Nile tilapia fry diets. Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight 2.30 g ± 0.01) were fed seven isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets formulated to contain 30 % crude protein and 19.70 kJ g–1 gross energy for 8 weeks. The control diet (CD) contained 22 % local FM and 30 % SBM, whereas in the other six diets, HFM replaced 33, 66 or 100 % of FM or SBM. The best weight gain (11.46), specific growth rate (3.14) and feed conversion ratio (1.24) of tilapia fry fed SBM33%, CD, FM33% and SBM66% diets were exhibited. Final body weight and protein retention increased in a linear pattern with increasing amino acids in the experimental diets with the exception of leucine and valine. The results indicated that good–quality HFM can successfully replace FM or SBM by up to 33 and 66 %, respectively, in Nile tilapia fry diets without compromising growth and protein utilization. The results also support the benefits of combining different sources of plant and animal proteins in Nile tilapia diets. Keywords Hydrolyzed feather meal Fish meal Soybean meal ...
