Water Scarcity In Brazil
Water scarcity is a problem that is currently affecting the entire world. Water is a crucial part of life and the importance of water for Brazil has a
unique story. Brazil is a country that relies heavily on water for power and other essentials. However, the country has been facing obstacles in
maintaining a positive water supply. One of the regions that are mostly impacted by this is the southeast region. The southeast region is where Sao
Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo are located. These states are the most populated states of the country. Sao Paulo is number one
on that list with a population of 20 million people (Rigby, 2015).
With a huge concentration of Brazil's population, the water supply located in Sao Paulo is one of the most significant. There are eight main reservoirs
in Sao Paulo. Four of them are decreasing rapidly; two of those are under critical conditions and running very low. In 2013, the reservoir at Alto Tiete...

It has taken effect in most states of this region. In Espirito Santo it has been going on for a few months now. My family lives in the eastern part of
that state and my aunt recently told me about the conditions there. The water from the sink faucets and shower do not flow abundantly as before.
Every few days, the water may run very low making it difficult to use (Alves, 2015). Power outages due to lack of water is not an uncommon thing
to occur; Brazil depends on hydroelectric power sources for more than half of its power (Rigby, 2015). They are also not allowed to wash cars,
sidewalks or any outside part of their home. The people that do not comply with the rules are fined, specifically in the cities of Vitoria and Vila Velha
(Drought, 2015). That is not the only obstacle that they are facing. The quality of water that is available to the people in Brazil is diminishing. Lack
of adequate water supply can lead to various

Today's Dominican Republic
Current political system and its structure
The Dominican Republic is a democratic state that is governed by a representative democracy. The democratic system is made up of three branches
of government in the executive, judiciary, and the legislature. The president (Bencosme & Norton, 2005) represents the head of state. The president
is the head of the executive branch. This branch is assigned the duties of making and executing the laws of the country. The laws are passed by the
congress and then executed by the executive through the leadership of the president. The president is concerned with the roles of appointing the
cabinet, and being the commander of the country's army. The president and his vice work in accordance to the terms of the executive, and they are
elected into office for a period of four years. The president does other roles like the appointment of the governors of the various governments
(Bencosme & Norton, 2005). These governors are 31 in number. This country is a multi–party state where elections are held after two years. There are
other humanitarian groups like civil organizations, advocacy groups, and many other political parties. Some of the major parties are the Social
Christian Reformist Party and the Dominican Liberation Party. The latest presidential elections were held in 2008 with Leonel Fernandez came out as
the winner (The Rough guide to the Dominican Republic, 2002).

A. Background
В· Family/Genealogy – Teresa Magbanua y Ferraris aka Teresa Magbanua for short was born on October 13th, 1869 at Pototan which is a small town
in Iloilo City in the Philippines. She was born from a well–off family, her father Don Juan Magbanua is a judge who sat on the court of First Instance in

her sisters as active, uneasy and boyish as a kid and she is not afraid of any man growing up. When she was young, she was involved in brawls with
the other boys in town and even fought with her brothers occasionally. She also enjoyed climbing trees, swimming in the river, and riding carabaos and
horses.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Political...
Political dynasty is evident when a person runs for an elective office who has an incumbent elective official occupying a position in the government
(Pamaos, 2012). Political dynasty in the Philippines is very prominent due to the numerous lines of families governing a specific area. Filipinos are
known for their close relationship with their families. Such is the familial love in Philippine society that some clans have made politics their family's
line of work (Santos, 2010). From the Aquinos, the Marcoses, the Estradas, and to the Binays that is currently handling the city of Makati. Political

They documented the historic and geographic patterns in the evolution and profile of political dynasties. According to Mosca, even when
political positions are open to all, a family tie to those already in power would confer various advantages. They conducted the research by creating
two indicator variables to characterize political dynasties. The first one is called Postrelatives which is equal to a legislator who has a relative
entering congress after he did. And the second one is called Prerelative which is equal to a legislator who had a relative entering congress before he
did. The results showed that the prerelative legislator had the chance to occupy a position in the congress compared to the postrelative legislator. This
indicates that the more relatives that entered in the congress before the candidate running for a position, the more likely he will succeed compared to
the other legislator who has no relatives inside the congress. An implication is that the political class is partly shaped by the luck of previous
politicians, and that holding political power reinforces the effects of other potential sources of elite persistence such as differing dynastic traits (BГі,

The New University Essay
The issue of the New University that I am analyzing was published on September 17, 2001. My argument is that UCI consists of a magnanimous
community in times of peril, hardship, and persecution. The abounding professional aid available on campus provides a healthy recovery in times
of difficulty. Whether students decide to find assistance from doctors, professors, counselors, friends and family, UCI has a mass variety of people
to talk to in order for guidance. The tragedy of the twin tower bombings sparked a new situation for people around the country. Since experiencing
such a large attack on home soil for the first time, many students had no plan of action, the best response as said by Dr. James Cones is, " people

Those ideals are found right here at UCI. Hatred is everywhere. It is natural to start blaming and pointing fingers to specific groups of people. The
Muslim community was no exception and was awaken to such bias. However, 9/11 was not the first time such tensions occurred. In October of year
2000, there was a "heated debate amongst Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian and Muslim students during a peaceful protest against the discord in the Middle
East" (Santos 18) on campus. Many were reminded of this protest as soon as the catastrophe in New York happened. Muslims tried to explain that those
who caused the event were not representing the entire, large Muslim community in the world. Those Muslims are extremists, not UCI students. In
order to overturn the hate, the supportive community at UCI reminded those short fused people the definition of being an American. Not only that,
UCI created workshops for high schools to implement a way to discourage any types of racism or acrimonious actions meant to be destructive toward
all Muslims. The Declaration of Independence states our Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness guaranteeing everyone's unalienable rights which are
protected by the government such as our basic freedoms in the first amendment. All over the UCI campus and New U article, patriotic images were
placed. The numerous large American flags allowed students to be reminded of such American ideals and the

Bourdieu's Theory Of Cultural Development
Pierre Bourdieu's cultural reproduction has transformed as well as influenced the literature field, following Alice Sullivan's statement on the successful
results of Bourdieu 's theory: "Bourdieu 's theory of cultural reproduction has been highly influential, and has generated a great deal of literature, both
theoretical and empirical" (144). According to Bourdieu's theory, based on his book Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste, makes the
declaration that higher levels of education will result in perceiving and comprehending the world around them much differently than a person with a
much lower educational level. Bourdieu's theory attributes this claim to the terms: cultural capital, cultural arbitrary and habitus, which are developed
through education and rationalize how the higher social classes are made up of these different forms of capital. Also, this critical analysis of these
different forms of capitals has been one of Bourdieu 's major contributions to the study of educational processes: "The concept of cultural capital is one
of Pierre Bourdieu 's major contributions to the study and critical analysis of educational processes and the ways in which they are associated with
socially unequal outcomes" (Moore 445). Given the success of Bourdieu's theory in both literature and education, Bourdieu's theory of cultural
reproduction can be found in many genres of literature including the Latin American literature piece of DoГ±a BГЎrbara. The novel presents

The Life of Rafael Trujillo Rafael Trujillo, born on October 24, 1891 in San CristГіbal, was raised in a small rural town with his 10 siblings. As a
child, Trujillo did not receive much education, at best it was very rudimentary as he informally attended schools in villagers' homes. When Trujillo
reached his adolescent years, he worked as a telegraph operator, and even joined gangs. He eventually lost his job because he was arrested for
forging checks. It was only after Trujillo married Aminta Ledesima, that he took on a steady life style and a steady job at a sugar plantation. This

Rural vs. Urbanized Regions: Poor rural communities are at a disadvantage when it comes to obtaining and utilizing resources. Education and health
facilities are not readily available, water supply and sewage systems are generally inadequate, and the people face severe constraints in accessing

Trujillo In The Dominican Republic
The history of the Dominican Republic is something that is not usually talked about. Now, the city is buzzing with tourists and resorts, but what most
people who visit the Dominican Republic don't know is the Era of Trujillo. The Dominican Republic has changed for the better and overcame the
corruption of the former tyrant, Trujillo.
The Dominican Republic is part of an island in the Caribbean called Hispaniola. The country occupies two–thirds of the island, while Haiti occupies the
rest one–third. Christopher Columbus first landed on Hispaniola in 1492 after the king and queen of Spain ordered him to sail West. The Carib people

The assassination failed in Caracaras on June 24th that year. News of this really angered some world leaders who then prompted the Organization of
American States to vote to sever relations with the cruel dictator.
There were many underground protests that were immediately suppressed just like the case in which the three revolutionary Mirabal sisters were
killed by Trujillo's henchmen in a planned car accident in 1960. However, on May 30th, 1961, Rafael Trujillo was ambushed while on his way home in
his car. He was gunned down by seven assassins, some were members of his own armed forces, and was killed at the age of 70.
The Dominicans were finally free from the 31–year dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The capital city later changed its name back to Santo Domingo. The
country struggled to establish a democracy after the death of Trujillo. In 1965, 30,000 US troops invaded the Dominican Republic in fear of the
country turning into a second Cuba. From 1966 to 1994, lawyer, historian and former president, Joaquin Balaguer, dominated the political life of the
republic up until his death. He looked up to Trujillo during his many weary years of presidency. In 1990, Dominicans were fleeing to the states after
struggling in the country. By the end of the year about 900,000 people, 12% of the population, had moved to New York. Again, Balaguer ran for

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of the public (taxpayers) funding the construction and/or renovation of privately owned sports
stadiums. The use of public funds has skyrocketed since the early 1980s. Why has there been an increase in the trend and what is really going on
behind the scenes? Through my research, I have found six articles that deal with many questions surrounding this hot topic issue. First, I will examine
how the sports teams and the local governments deal with the public when proposing the funding of the sports teams' stadiums. After the ... Show more

What sports fan doesn't like the idea of being able to help pay for his or her favorite team's stadium? One might say that fans spend a lot of time and
money there, so they would like the stadium to be nice and new. It is quite possible that a new stadium could help the team's performance, or help
with the chance to hold a major event, such as the Super Bowl (at least these are perceived notions among many sports fans.) The incentive to win or
attend the Super Bowl seems pretty enticing to a fan. Plus, without a new stadium, many owners threaten to leave town if they are denied help from
taxpayers. Can you imagine not having your favorite team in town anymore? The pride in having a hometown team is not something to take lightly.
The owners and the local government work together to convince the residents of the city and local businesses that it'll all be worth it in the long run
thanks in part to the jobs and revenue being put into the city. Surely fans don't mind giving a little bit of extra money out of their taxes if it means
keeping their favorite team around for many years to come while supplying jobs and extra revenue into local businesses.
But, the answer to the main question is not as simple as it may seem, especially to the uninformed sports fan. Take a look at this topic from an
economic point of view. Is there an actual economic gain from having a new sports stadium? Professional sports teams are multimillion dollar
organizations themselves. Why

Water Scarcity Is A Essential Part Of Our Planet Earth
Water is a vital part of our planet Earth. Without it, the number of negative impacts it can have is unimaginable. The southeastern states in Brazil are
one of the many regions of the world affected by drought. Not having enough water for the necessary daily activities has driven people to extremes in
order to get the water that they need. Unacceptable water supply has led to issues in the economy, low food supply, starvation of animals, reduced
quality of health, loss of life and more. This raises a big concern for future water supply. The effects it has in this region can worsen and possibly
spread to other areas. Eventually, the water may run out and leave people with no promising solution.

In over 80 years, this region in Brazil has never encountered such devastating results in water deficit (Rigby, 2015). The drought they are experiencing
there is causing noteworthy consequences for many aspects including the economy of Brazil.
Several plans have been made in hopes of creating solutions to the shortage of water. Some of these projects have not been successful. In June, the
governor of Sao Paulo launched a system connecting a river named River Guaio to the water supply of Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, the plan did not
go as expected. The poor flow of the river was not able to reach the intended 265 gallons of water transfer to the water supply. This project alone cost
8.3 million dollars (Rigby, 2015). Other ideas and projects to help this issue are in progress, including one that is worth more than four times the cost
of the one that began in June. If the outcome is anything like the one previously mentioned the cost of these attempts may cause damage to the
economy. Investing a great amount of money may not be worth it if it does not lead to positive results.
The drought in this region of Brazil has caused some states to fight over water. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are disputing over this subject. A water
source in the area supplies water to both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In desperation, Sao Paulo requested that the water from this source be rerouted
only to them. This caused an

America and Haiti Essay
America and Haiti
The United States interest in Haiti, as mentioned above, began a huge increase in the first decade of the twentieth century. The extent of U. S.
economic penetration was not as great as that of France and Germany, but by 1910 it controlled sixty percent of Haiti's import industry. Unfortunately,
the Haitian banking system did not follow this path and was, at this time, "perilously close to domination by European interests." (Langley, 1982, 70)
In an effort to gain more control over Haitian economic affairs, the United States engaged in a battle with France and Germany over the Banque
Nationale. Two banks from the U. S. attempted to obtain control of the bank but lost out to a German bank, which proceeded to ally itself ... Show more

As U. S. Secretary of State Philander Knox stated, "If hostilities between rival factions become imminent, define neutral zone and prevent fighting in
the city. Land forces if necessary, safeguard American interests, and in general prevent any action detrimental to foreign interests." (Challener, 333)
However, the predicted time bomb of Haiti never went off, and the situation was left for Taft's successor Woodrow Wilson to deal with.
The Wilson Administration also saw political instability as Haiti's primary and immediate problem. Between 1911 and U. S. military intervention in
1915, seven Haitian presidents had either been assassinated or removed from office by force. This lack of stability gave the United States yet one
more excuse to get involved in Haitian matters – in order to keep European powers at bay and from taking advantage of the politically vulnerable state.
In creating his Haitian political agenda, Wilson relied–to a great extent–on the advice of Banque Nationale's American manager Roger Farnham. As
stated above, Farnham and the Banque had a great deal of power over the Haitian executives. When consulted by Wilson, Farnham deduced that
"American business would leave the republic unless the United States intervened to protect it." (Langley, 1982, 71) Though this was certainly not the
deciding factor in the intervention of the U. S., it certainly helped direct American policy down that particular path, making intervention increasingly

Dominican Republic Research Paper
Before the Spaniards settled in what is now known as the Dominican Republic there was an estimated one–million indigenous people who inhabited the
island. The natives had several different names for the island such as; Ayiti, Bohio and Kiskeya. When Christopher Columbus sighted and landed on
the island in 1492 there were 5 operating "kingdoms" or tribes. Christopher Columbus named the island "La EspaГ±ola," and called the natives
"Indians" because he thought that he had reached the coast of India. By 1496 Columbus had established a settlement on the southern end of the island
called "Santo Domingo," which is the capital of the Dominican Republic today. AlcГЎzar de ColГіn, or the palace of Diego Columbus (who is the
eldest son of Christopher) still stands in Santo Domingo and is one of the most visited museums on the island. The city established by Columbus held
the first university, hospital and catholic cathedral in the new world. It was the first part of the new world to be completely overtaken by colonial
spanish policy. Class and caste systems were created, and the Roman Catholic Church began to maintain both temporal and spiritual authority. This
would lead to the exploitation and elimination of the natives and create a cruel and unjust slave–based society. In 1795 Spain was forced to surrender

The Haitian Relationship With the Dominican Republic Essays
The Haitian Relationship With the Dominican Republic
The Haitian revolution had tremendous repercussions in the social, political and economic arenas of the world, but especially for the relationship with
the neighboring nation of the Dominican Republic. In order to understand the development of the Dominican–Haitian relationship after the Haitian
revolution one must examine how the two colonies of Hispanola dealt with each other before it. Throughout history there has been constant stress
between the interactions of these nations, yet there is no easy explanation for what has caused it. In effect, it has been an accumulation of events which
has allowed for the present relationship to evolve.

This minority was mostly bound by race, although class was important to a lesser extent. This created a society where it was favorable to be lighter
skinned since it opened the doors for better social status in the colony. Although, because of the unique inheritance laws of the colony which allowed
for blacks the opportunity to inherit the large estates of their white fathers there were a large amount of wealthy mulattos. Still, rich blacks and mulattos
had nearly the same rights in the colony as their slaving counterparts. Knowing this it is clear that the social structure of the colony had a great impact
on the development of the Haitian revolution.
As a result of being outnumbered, slave owners feared rebellions which would remove them from their position of power. This fear is largely to
blame for the especially hard conditions for slaves in the colony of Saint Domingue. On the majority of plantations for example slaves were forbidden
to meet with other slaves, and harsh overseers were employed to make sure that the slaves cooperated.
Besides slave uprising, another stimuli for the Haitian Revolution was the political and social conditions of France. Around 1787 an anti–slavery
sentiment developed in France after being heavily influenced by the English abolitionists movements, which included among others the Quakers.
Furthermore, the political instability of France during the late eighteenth century forced the small community of

Similarities Between The Sacho Panza Syndrome And The...
The Sancho Panza syndrome (then) and the American dream (then and now)
In the 15th century, the combination of the Sancho Panza Syndrome and the American dream fueled exploration at that time and created an incredibly
enticing allure of the New World. Exploration and colonization were performed to attain a higher social status, more wealth, and fame. The result of
this exploration led to the discovery of new lands and laid the foundation for new countries, but it came with a cost. The perils of the new land
discovered were often incredibly treacherous and sometimes times even life–threatening, however, the American dream never faded away. The
American dream today holds very similar to the American dream in the 15th and 16th centuries despite the gap of 500 years. These dreams are very
alike, because they both are comprised of individuals trying to achieve success in lands of opportunity, and although some were prosperous, others
were not so fortunate. The American dream today is a household concept, which states that if a person works hard enough, he or she can make a better
life for themselves. This concept inspires countless people every day to overcome adversity in attempt to better their life. On a personal level, I can
relate to this dream vicariously through my father. My grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1923 from Bisaccia, Italy. The Procaccino family
stood firmly on the belief that following the American dream was key to success, but despite how hard my great grandfather worked, the Great
Depression drained the money out of the Procaccino household. John (my grandfather) yearned to become a doctor, but due to his family's financial
situation, John enlisted in the US Army during World War II. After completing his duties, he earned an engineering degree and became aNew York City
engineer. John bore two sons named Angelo and John II. Angelo was a naturally gifted child with tremendous brainpower, but John was more of a
rapscallion. With the guidance of Angelo, John realized that the best way to create something with your life was to follow the American dream and
work harder than anyone else. John II became an incredible student and eventually went on to be a nationally

Traffic Congestion in London
The Urban Environment: Traffic congestion in cities is a problem throughout the world. Evaluate the effectiveness of one official initiative undertaken
to tackle this issue.
Today traffic congestion has become one of the major issues that exert an influence on towns and cities in economically developed countries. Chen and
Hai (2012,para1) explains that congestion takes place when the road space is overfilled by car users and speed of the traffic lessens, moreover, it is
regarded as a potential reason for air pollution or even climate change. One possible approach is considered to be the implementation of road pricing

Therefore, it is worth recalling that LCC has achieved the goal to reduce traffic congestion. Another aspect to observe is the scheme's influence on
ambient air pollution and general road condition. It is undoubtedly true that one of the main positive consequences from congestion charging scheme
has been the enhancements in air quality, reductions in environmental pollution and to cut the use of carbon–based fuels in central area. One might
argue that pollution level have changed slightly or even have grown in pre – and post–charging scheme period. It is widely believed that the
environment have not been positively affected by the vehicles' reduction in numbers for the reason that taxes cover only small part of the London. On
the other hand, Tonne et al (2008, 622) justify that NO2 and PM10 concentrations within the central area reduced noticeably in contrast to the Greater
London, where there were small variations in average concentration . On balance, the overall picture seems to be that the congestion charges has
improved air quality and considerably reduced emissions. To sum up, one possible solution for tackling the issue of traffic congestion has been

Haitian Revolution: Circumstances
Haiti was the French of Santo Domingo, the most prolific colonial economy in the world. Monopolized by plantation agriculture, mainly to stock
coffee and sugar to the world market, practically 90 percent was Haiti's slave population. African slaves were brought to the island in the Atlantic
slave trade. The fragment of the populace subsisted of peoples of European ancestry and of mixed heritage, delineated in the law of the colony as
"white" or people of color, proportionately. Both of these groups owned slaves. French bureaucrats subjugated the island. By 1788, the native Indian

He also overtook the heads of the free coloreds and rival black commanders. Toussaint oversaw undisclosed consultations with the British that led to
their disengagement from Santo Domingo in 1798; he also had contacts with the United States government, which was then entangled in an implicit
war with France and was elated to sabotage French jurisdiction over their colonies. Historians contradict about what Toussaint was intending during
these years. Some think he already predetermined to establish an autonomous country; others consider he was hoping for an agreement in which Santo
Domingo would stay a French colony, but with a government of its own, selected by all its citizens, despite race. Toussaint was mindful that, as
subversive earnestness in France was fading, some legislators were calling for the rehabilitation of slavery in the colonies; he had no motive of letting
making that come to past. But he needed French support against the British, and so he played a perplexed game and kept his real aims vague.
Toussaint did hope to rehabilitate Santo Domingo's economy. Although he guaranteed the black populace that there would be no return to slavery, he
reiterated that most former slaves had to go back to their plantations and continue field work. They would now be paid and have more free time, but
they were still not free to leave or to become

The Most Popular Means Of Public And Cheapest Transport...
I was born and raised in the Philippines. In 2014, we moved into the United States. My friends usually ask me, "How's it living in America compared
here in the Philippines?". Moving to another country was a huge, scary, life–changing leap. People will leave behind everything they have developed to
know, and begin to grow into new cultures and traditions. Some of the things I observed that differs between Filipinos and Americans were about
celebrations, means of transportation and general things of culture. In the Philippines, the most popular means of public and cheapest transport for
people, goods and even sometimes little animals are Jeepneys. Most of the time, jeepneys are always overloaded and some passengers are hanging
on the back or even at the top of the vehicle; nevertheless hanging in the jeepney isn't allowed in large cities. For budget travelers, Jeepneys are one
of the best and most comfortable transport options. There are also Padyak in local distances, where the rider sits in a sidecar, beside the bicycle,
rather than behind it. The Filipino padyak is similar to rickshaws and tricycles. Light rail, buses, and taxis, are the other mode of transportation in the
cities like Manila; however most people just walk in the end because of the heavy traffic. While in America, they have transit busses, taxis or trains for
public transportation. They also have subways, also known as metro an underground railway system generally found in some large cities, and there was

At his time, medical professionals did not fully understand yellow fever. In fact, most scientists believed that the virus was spread by contact with
infected objects or people, a miscalculation that would not be remedied until the 1840s, half a century after the 1793 epidemic in Philadelphia.
Yellow fever is a virus that is usually found in South America and sub–Saharan Africa, where the virus is spread via mosquitoes. Symptoms of yellow
fever often are not noticeable until four to six days after infection and vary in severity. The two phases of yellow fever include the acute phase and
the toxic phase. In the acute phase, infected persons will experience mild symptoms such as fever and muscle pain. The acute phase lasts three to six
days before evolving into the toxic phase. Symptoms of the toxic phase include high fever, bleeding from body orifices, jaundice, vomiting, and
abdominal pain, and, eventually, the toxic phase becomes deadly, leading to lowblood pressure, organ failure, shock, coma, or even death.
Though there is now a vaccine for yellow fever, it was not yet developed in 1793. Doctors were at a bit of a loss regarding how to calm the blazing
flames of yellow fever epidemics around the world. Some doctors began to use bloodletting as a treatment for yellow fever, which was a very therapy
common in early medicine. Bloodletting involves the removal of "bad" or infected blood from the body to rid it

The Contribution Of Thomas Benavides Conflict In Texas
Santos Benavides was a veteran of the Federalist–Centralist war and the highest ranking Mexican–Texan during the Civil War. But his contributions to
Texas don't stop there. He was the mayor of a famous city and brought modern politics to his isolated region. In this essay I will explore some of those
important factors and explain how much Benavides truly contributed to the way we see Texas today.
The conflict in Texas deeply divided the Mexican–Texans. An estimated 2,550 fought in the ranks of the Confederacy, while 950, including some
Mexican nationals, fought for the Union. Over 2,550 mexican texans joined the confederate army during the civil war. And according to historian Jerry

Benavides and his brothers Cristobal and Refugio were very passionate in their crusade to keep Texas safe during and after the war. In many ways,

remaining to defend the area around Laredo, Texas was commanded by Colonel Santos Benavides. This unit was better known as the "Benavides
Regiment." Which became infamous for years to come in Laredo, Texas. Benavides was the highest–ranking Mexican–American in the Confederate
Army. Although Generals Hamilton Lee, and Magruder recommended promotion for Benavides to Brigadier General, Colonel John Ford was against
this decision, feeling it would squander his role in the Rio Grande exploits. The civil war wasn't over for Benavides and his

Merengue Tipico Essay
This paper will be comparing and contrasting Merengue Tipico music, which is a type of merengue, and bachata music of the Dominican Republic.
Merengue and Bachata are the two most popular music genres in the Dominican Republic. These two kinds of music represent the Dominican Republic
and its people. Many Dominicans have taken their music and traditions to different parts of the world. Mainly, theBachata and Merengue have
expanded to different cities of the United States and Latin America. Although both genres have a lot of characteristics in common, they also have many
differences. Two of the main differences these two genres have are the instrumentation and their artists and composers.

Each one of these instruments complements Merengue Tipico in a way that no other instrument would. The tambora is a two–headed drum that is
more used as a background instrument in Merengue Tipico. It originated in Africa and was brought to the Caribbean by the West African slaves that
came to work plantation (Larson, 2017). Moreover, the guira is a percussion instrument that is played by rasping a metal stick against the rough surface
of the instrument (Solano, 2017). Also, there is the saxophone, which is one of the last instruments that was added to the Merengue Tipico, and
contributes to give a better rhythm to it. The other instrument that is essential in Merengue Tipico is the accordion. This is a musical instrument that has
form of a box. It is held and played by pulling the sides apart and then pushing them together while pressing buttons and keys. However, the instruments
in Bachata are completely different, except that the guira is also played in Bachata. The instruments used to play bachata are the lead guitar, the
segunda guitar, the bass guitar, the bongos, and the gГјira (Marracco, 2014). The lead guitar, the segunda guitar and the bass guitar are essential to play
Bachata. These instruments are the ones that make the most improvisation. Followed by the bongos, which are a pair of single–headed drums that are
played with hands and fingers (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2017). Overall, Merengue Tipico and

The Political Landscape Of Colombia
Colombia is located in the northwest of South America. The current population is estimated to be in the region of 46.73 million with the capital city
Bogota being the most populated. The labour force is estimated to be 24.34 million. Colombia's major resources are oil and coal. The country operates
in a representative democracy which attempts to empower the masses. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon is the president; he is currently serving his last
term in office
Colombia is dominated by two political parties, Social National Unity Party and the opposition, Democratic Center Party led by former president,
Alvaro Uribe. In recent times the political landscape of Colombia has changed, political stability is now the order of the day. The freedom of
expression is evident in policy debates where the opposition has been very critical of the policy of the current administration. Voter turnout for the last
presidential was 47% of the voting population, this could be due to the high level of poverty in the country. The major political change in recent history
has been the reinstatement of a one term policy limit for the president from 2018 onwards. This constitutional change makes Colombia less stable
country. The change will introduce policy and regulatory uncertainty which could be detrimental to future growth as future presidents are more likely
to be myopic in their policy decisions.
Colombia currently has the potential for population growth in the future due to the youth

Water Scarcity In Brazil

  • 1. Water Scarcity In Brazil Water scarcity is a problem that is currently affecting the entire world. Water is a crucial part of life and the importance of water for Brazil has a unique story. Brazil is a country that relies heavily on water for power and other essentials. However, the country has been facing obstacles in maintaining a positive water supply. One of the regions that are mostly impacted by this is the southeast region. The southeast region is where Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo are located. These states are the most populated states of the country. Sao Paulo is number one on that list with a population of 20 million people (Rigby, 2015). With a huge concentration of Brazil's population, the water supply located in Sao Paulo is one of the most significant. There are eight main reservoirs in Sao Paulo. Four of them are decreasing rapidly; two of those are under critical conditions and running very low. In 2013, the reservoir at Alto Tiete... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My family lives in the eastern part of that state and my aunt recently told me about the conditions there. The water from the sink faucets and shower do not flow abundantly as before. Every few days, the water may run very low making it difficult to use (Alves, 2015). Power outages due to lack of water is not an uncommon thing to occur; Brazil depends on hydroelectric power sources for more than half of its power (Rigby, 2015). They are also not allowed to wash cars, sidewalks or any outside part of their home. The people that do not comply with the rules are fined, specifically in the cities of Vitoria and Vila Velha (Drought, 2015). That is not the only obstacle that they are facing. The quality of water that is available to the people in Brazil is diminishing. Lack of adequate water supply can lead to various ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Today's Dominican Republic Today's Dominican Republic Current political system and its structure The Dominican Republic is a democratic state that is governed by a representative democracy. The democratic system is made up of three branches of government in the executive, judiciary, and the legislature. The president (Bencosme & Norton, 2005) represents the head of state. The president is the head of the executive branch. This branch is assigned the duties of making and executing the laws of the country. The laws are passed by the congress and then executed by the executive through the leadership of the president. The president is concerned with the roles of appointing the cabinet, and being the commander of the country's army. The president and his vice work in accordance to the terms of the executive, and they are elected into office for a period of four years. The president does other roles like the appointment of the governors of the various governments (Bencosme & Norton, 2005). These governors are 31 in number. This country is a multi–party state where elections are held after two years. There are other humanitarian groups like civil organizations, advocacy groups, and many other political parties. Some of the major parties are the Social Christian Reformist Party and the Dominican Liberation Party. The latest presidential elections were held in 2008 with Leonel Fernandez came out as the winner (The Rough guide to the Dominican Republic, 2002). The makeup of today's population The United ... Political dynasty is evident when a person runs for an elective office who has an incumbent elective official occupying a position in the government (Pamaos, 2012). Political dynasty in the Philippines is very prominent due to the numerous lines of families governing a specific area. Filipinos are known for their close relationship with their families. Such is the familial love in Philippine society that some clans have made politics their family's line of work (Santos, 2010). According to Mosca, even when political positions are open to all, a family tie to those already in power would confer various advantages. They conducted the research by creating two indicator variables to characterize political dynasties. The first one is called Postrelatives which is equal to a legislator who has a relative entering congress after he did. And the second one is called Prerelative which is equal to a legislator who had a relative entering congress before he did. The results showed that the prerelative legislator had the chance to occupy a position in the congress compared to the postrelative legislator. This indicates that the more relatives that entered in the congress before the candidate running for a position, the more likely he will succeed compared to the other legislator who has no relatives inside the congress. An implication is that the political class is partly shaped by the luck of previous politicians, and that holding political power reinforces the effects of other potential sources of elite persistence such as differing dynastic traits (BГі, BГі, & Snyder, ... My argument is that UCI consists of a magnanimous community in times of peril, hardship, and persecution. The abounding professional aid available on campus provides a healthy recovery in times of difficulty. Whether students decide to find assistance from doctors, professors, counselors, friends and family, UCI has a mass variety of people to talk to in order for guidance. The tragedy of the twin tower bombings sparked a new situation for people around the country. The Muslim community was no exception and was awaken to such bias. However, 9/11 was not the first time such tensions occurred. In October of year 2000, there was a "heated debate amongst Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian and Muslim students during a peaceful protest against the discord in the Middle East" (Santos 18) on campus. Many were reminded of this protest as soon as the catastrophe in New York happened. Muslims tried to explain that those who caused the event were not representing the entire, large Muslim community in the world. Those Muslims are extremists, not UCI students. In order to overturn the hate, the supportive community at UCI reminded those short fused people the definition of being an American. Not only that, UCI created workshops for high schools to implement a way to discourage any types of racism or acrimonious actions meant to be destructive toward all Muslims. The Declaration of Independence states our Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness guaranteeing everyone's unalienable rights which are protected by the government such as our basic freedoms in the first amendment. According to Bourdieu's theory, based on his book Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste, makes the declaration that higher levels of education will result in perceiving and comprehending the world around them much differently than a person with a much lower educational level. Bourdieu's theory attributes this claim to the terms: cultural capital, cultural arbitrary and habitus, which are developed through education and rationalize how the higher social classes are made up of these different forms of capital. Also, this critical analysis of these different forms of capitals has been one of Bourdieu 's major contributions to the study of educational processes: "The concept of cultural capital is one of Pierre Bourdieu 's major contributions to the study and critical analysis of educational processes and the ways in which they are associated with socially unequal outcomes" (Moore 445). There were many underground protests that were immediately suppressed just like the case in which the three revolutionary Mirabal sisters were killed by Trujillo's henchmen in a planned car accident in 1960. However, on May 30th, 1961, Rafael Trujillo was ambushed while on his way home in his car. He was gunned down by seven assassins, some were members of his own armed forces, and was killed at the age of 70. The Dominicans were finally free from the 31–year dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The capital city later changed its name back to Santo Domingo. The country struggled to establish a democracy after the death of Trujillo. Taxpayers Funding Professional Sports Stadiums Kayla Thompson MBA 578 SB FT Managerial Economics April 13, 2013 ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of the public (taxpayers) funding the construction and/or renovation of privately owned sports stadiums. The use of public funds has skyrocketed since the early 1980s. Why has there been an increase in the trend and what is really going on behind the scenes? Through my research, I have found six articles that deal with many questions surrounding this hot topic issue. First, I will examine how the sports teams and the local governments deal with the public when proposing the funding of the sports teams' stadiums. After the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What sports fan doesn't like the idea of being able to help pay for his or her favorite team's stadium? One might say that fans spend a lot of time and money there, so they would like the stadium to be nice and new. It is quite possible that a new stadium could help the team's performance, or help with the chance to hold a major event, such as the Super Bowl (at least these are perceived notions among many sports fans.) The incentive to win or attend the Super Bowl seems pretty enticing to a fan. Plus, without a new stadium, many owners threaten to leave town if they are denied help from taxpayers. Can you imagine not having your favorite team in town anymore? The pride in having a hometown team is not something to take lightly. The owners and the local government work together to convince the residents of the city and local businesses that it'll all be worth it in the long run thanks in part to the jobs and revenue being put into the city. Surely fans don't mind giving a little bit of extra money out of their taxes if it means keeping their favorite team around for many years to come while supplying jobs and extra revenue into local businesses. But, the answer to the main question is not as simple as it may seem, especially to the uninformed sports fan. Take a look at this topic from an economic point of view. Is there an actual economic gain from having a new sports stadium? Professional sports teams are multimillion dollar organizations themselves. Why

The southeastern states in Brazil are one of the many regions of the world affected by drought. The drought they are experiencing there is causing noteworthy consequences for many aspects including the economy of Brazil. In June, the governor of Sao Paulo launched a system connecting a river named River Guaio to the water supply of Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, the plan did not go as expected. The poor flow of the river was not able to reach the intended 265 gallons of water transfer to the water supply. This project alone cost 8.3 million dollars (Rigby, 2015). Other ideas and projects to help this issue are in progress, including one that is worth more than four times the cost of the one that began in June. If the outcome is anything like the one previously mentioned the cost of these attempts may cause damage to the economy. Investing a great amount of money may not be worth it if it does not lead to positive results. The drought in this region of Brazil has caused some states to fight over water. Unfortunately, the Haitian banking system did not follow this path and was, at this time, "perilously close to domination by European interests." (Langley, 1982, 70) In an effort to gain more control over Haitian economic affairs, the United States engaged in a battle with France and Germany over the Banque Nationale. Two banks from the U. (Challener, 333) However, the predicted time bomb of Haiti never went off, and the situation was left for Taft's successor Woodrow Wilson to deal with. The Wilson Administration also saw political instability as Haiti's primary and immediate problem. Between 1911 and U. S. military intervention in 1915, seven Haitian presidents had either been assassinated or removed from office by force. This lack of stability gave the United States yet one more excuse to get involved in Haitian matters – in order to keep European powers at bay and from taking advantage of the politically vulnerable state. In creating his Haitian political agenda, Wilson relied–to a great extent–on the advice of Banque Nationale's American manager Roger Farnham. As stated above, Farnham and the Banque had a great deal of power over the Haitian executives. When consulted by Wilson, Farnham deduced that "American business would leave the republic unless the United States intervened to protect it." Still, rich blacks and mulattos had nearly the same rights in the colony as their slaving counterparts. Knowing this it is clear that the social structure of the colony had a great impact on the development of the Haitian revolution. As a result of being outnumbered, slave owners feared rebellions which would remove them from their position of power. This fear is largely to blame for the especially hard conditions for slaves in the colony of Saint Domingue. On the majority of plantations for example slaves were forbidden to meet with other slaves, and harsh overseers were employed to make sure that the slaves cooperated. The Sancho Panza syndrome (then) and the American dream (then and now) In the 15th century, the combination of the Sancho Panza Syndrome and the American dream fueled exploration at that time and created an incredibly enticing allure of the New World. Exploration and colonization were performed to attain a higher social status, more wealth, and fame. The result of this exploration led to the discovery of new lands and laid the foundation for new countries, but it came with a cost. The perils of the new land discovered were often incredibly treacherous and sometimes times even life–threatening, however, the American dream never faded away. The American dream today holds very similar to the American dream in the 15th and 16th centuries despite the gap of 500 years. These dreams are very alike, because they both are comprised of individuals trying to achieve success in lands of opportunity, and although some were prosperous, others were not so fortunate. The American dream today is a household concept, which states that if a person works hard enough, he or she can make a better life for themselves. This concept inspires countless people every day to overcome adversity in attempt to better their life. On a personal level, I can relate to this dream vicariously through my father. My grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1923 from Bisaccia, Italy. As commander of the army, Grant soon became trapped in the struggles between President Andrew Johnson and Congress. Because of the president's clear Pro–Southern tendencies, the general gradually moved closer to the radicals and cooperated with Secretary of War Edwin M. Grant accepted appointment as secretary ad interim after Johnson's dismissal of Stanton, but clashed violently with the president when the Senate ordered Stanton reinstated. Evaluate the effectiveness of one official initiative undertaken to tackle this issue. Today traffic congestion has become one of the major issues that exert an influence on towns and cities in economically developed countries. Chen and Hai (2012,para1) explains that congestion takes place when the road space is overfilled by car users and speed of the traffic lessens, moreover, it is regarded as a potential reason for air pollution or even climate change. One possible approach is considered to be the implementation of road pricing policy, which would contribute to the decrease of traffic congestion rates, improvement of air ... Another aspect to observe is the scheme's influence on ambient air pollution and general road condition. It is undoubtedly true that one of the main positive consequences from congestion charging scheme has been the enhancements in air quality, reductions in environmental pollution and to cut the use of carbon–based fuels in central area. One might argue that pollution level have changed slightly or even have grown in pre – and post–charging scheme period. It is widely believed that the environment have not been positively affected by the vehicles' reduction in numbers for the reason that taxes cover only small part of the London. On the other hand, Tonne et al (2008, 622) justify that NO2 and PM10 concentrations within the central area reduced noticeably in contrast to the Greater London, where there were small variations in average concentration . On balance, the overall picture seems to be that the congestion charges has improved air quality and considerably reduced emissions. Monopolized by plantation agriculture, mainly to stock coffee and sugar to the world market, practically 90 percent was Haiti's slave population. African slaves were brought to the island in the Atlantic slave trade. The fragment of the populace subsisted of peoples of European ancestry and of mixed heritage, delineated in the law of the colony as "white" or people of color, proportionately. Toussaint oversaw undisclosed consultations with the British that led to their disengagement from Santo Domingo in 1798; he also had contacts with the United States government, which was then entangled in an implicit war with France and was elated to sabotage French jurisdiction over their colonies. Historians contradict about what Toussaint was intending during these years. Some think he already predetermined to establish an autonomous country; others consider he was hoping for an agreement in which Santo Domingo would stay a French colony, but with a government of its own, selected by all its citizens, despite race. Toussaint was mindful that, as subversive earnestness in France was fading, some legislators were calling for the rehabilitation of slavery in the colonies; he had no motive of letting making that come to past. But he needed French support against the British, and so he played a perplexed game and kept his real aims vague. Toussaint did hope to rehabilitate Santo Domingo's economy. Although he guaranteed the black populace that there would be no return to slavery, he reiterated that most former slaves had to go back to their plantations and continue field work. • 36. The Most Popular Means Of Public And Cheapest Transport... I was born and raised in the Philippines. In 2014, we moved into the United States. My friends usually ask me, "How's it living in America compared here in the Philippines?". Moving to another country was a huge, scary, life–changing leap. People will leave behind everything they have developed to know, and begin to grow into new cultures and traditions. Some of the things I observed that differs between Filipinos and Americans were about celebrations, means of transportation and general things of culture. In the Philippines, the most popular means of public and cheapest transport for people, goods and even sometimes little animals are Jeepneys. Most of the time, jeepneys are always overloaded and some passengers are hanging on the back or even at the top of the vehicle; nevertheless hanging in the jeepney isn't allowed in large cities. For budget travelers, Jeepneys are one of the best and most comfortable transport options. There are also Padyak in local distances, where the rider sits in a sidecar, beside the bicycle, rather than behind it. The Filipino padyak is similar to rickshaws and tricycles. Light rail, buses, and taxis, are the other mode of transportation in the cities like Manila; however most people just walk in the end because of the heavy traffic. While in America, they have transit busses, taxis or trains for public transportation. They also have subways, also known as metro an underground railway system generally found in some large cities, and there was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fact, most scientists believed that the virus was spread by contact with infected objects or people, a miscalculation that would not be remedied until the 1840s, half a century after the 1793 epidemic in Philadelphia. Yellow fever is a virus that is usually found in South America and sub–Saharan Africa, where the virus is spread via mosquitoes. Symptoms of yellow fever often are not noticeable until four to six days after infection and vary in severity. The two phases of yellow fever include the acute phase and the toxic phase. In the acute phase, infected persons will experience mild symptoms such as fever and muscle pain. The acute phase lasts three to six days before evolving into the toxic phase. Symptoms of the toxic phase include high fever, bleeding from body orifices, jaundice, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and, eventually, the toxic phase becomes deadly, leading to lowblood pressure, organ failure, shock, coma, or even death. Though there is now a vaccine for yellow fever, it was not yet developed in 1793. Doctors were at a bit of a loss regarding how to calm the blazing flames of yellow fever epidemics around the world. Some doctors began to use bloodletting as a treatment for yellow fever, which was a very therapy common in early medicine. This historic effort pushed the union forces back, and nearly turned the tide of the war in Texas. Moreover, the guira is a percussion instrument that is played by rasping a metal stick against the rough surface of the instrument (Solano, 2017). Also, there is the saxophone, which is one of the last instruments that was added to the Merengue Tipico, and contributes to give a better rhythm to it.
