FREE FILM SCREENING: THIS SUNDAY
Frida (2002)
Sunday, October 5, 2 p.m. in the Annenberg Theater at the art museum

Frida's story comes to life on the big screen in the widely acclaimed 2002 film Frida, starring
Salma Hayek. Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) shared unflinchingly and
openly with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), as the young couple took the art world by storm. From
her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband to her illicit and controversial
affairs with Leon Trotsky and Nickolas Muray, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life
as a political and artistic revolutionary. Admission to this screening is FREE. The film runs 123
minutes and is rated R for sexuality/nudity and language.

Family Activities
Faces: Frida's, Yours and Mine
Sunday, October 19, 2 p.m.
Thursday, October 23, 6 p.m.

Participants for this fun family activity will sit on the museum’s “story quilt” and listen to the
reading of Jonah Winter’s Frida read by museum staff. Frida is a playful glimpse into the Frida
Kahlo’s life and work. Filled with the folk art icons of her Mexican culture--monkeys, devils,
smiling skeletons, and sympathetic jaguars depicted with acrylics and wax on paper--the book
describes, in short streams of text, the feisty, irreverent, fierce nature of the artist. After the
reading, children will be encouraged to make their own self-portrait by sketching, painting or
through photography. These activities are FREE.

Community Day
Day of the Dead
Saturday, November 1, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Day of the Dead was a favorite holiday of Frida's and the art museum will host a series of
activities on this day. Participants can join a masked procession through downtown Palm Springs,
make art with the whole family, visit traditional and contemporary altar installations (including an
altar dedicated to Frida). There will be music by Mariachi Sol de Mexico de José Valdez and
screenings of three films that reveal the roots of Day of the Dead. Admission to the museum and
to all events this day is FREE.

Bilingual tours of the exhibition are offered every Sunday at 1 p.m. Join a docent-led tour through
the special exhibition that provides a fascinating account of Frida and her relationship with
