● Two ultrasonic transducers (sensors) are
installed to the outside pipe wall sending
and receiving ultrasonic pulses
● The signals travel with and against the
direction of the flow
● When there is no flow, both signals arrive
without transit-time delay
● A moving fluid will result in a transit-time
difference between both signals
● The measured transit-time difference is
directly proportional to the flow velocity
● In combination with pipe and medium
parameters other measurement units
are determined
Transit-time method: The “rowing boat principle”
● The ultrasonic pulse -ab- crosses the pipe
quicker with the flow than signal -ba-,
which is sent against the flow
● Applicable for all acoustically conductive
liquids regardless of their electrical
conductivity

The more central the line is positioned, the better the signal-
to-noise ratio and signal quality.
