Identify the conditions that require and problems with emotional labour. I Outline the four
components of emotional intelligence. I Summarize the effects of job dissatisfaction in terms of the

Job satisfaction, the most widely studied work attitude, is then discussed. We look at job satisfaction
among Canadians, the effects of job satisfaction on work behaviour, and new findings regarding the
relationship between job satisfaction and employee performance and customer satisfaction. The next
section provides an overview of organizational commitment, including the types of commitment,
consequences of commitment, and ways to build affective commitment. Organizational commitment
is strongly influenced by trust and the psychological contract, so the final section of this chapter
looks at the meaning and elements of both concepts. EMOTIONS IN THE WORKPLACE The
tragic events of September 11, 2001, in the United States are permanently etched in our minds. The
four hijacked planes and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers evoked a variety of emotions
in people, such as anger, sadness, and fear. Airline employees particularly identified with these
shocking events. "We were torn apart," says Lucie Leduc, a flight attendant with Air Transat in
Montreal. "We could totally imagine it. . . . There were flight attendants who couldn't fly for a while;
some are still not flying."2 Lucie Leduc and her co–workers at Air Transat experienced the strong
emotions associated with the events of September 11, 2001. Emotions are psychological and

to performance measurement. However, the Walker Review (2009) classifies that the role of the
corporate governance as protection of shareholders' interests by providing the company's strategic

corporate governance in the late 19th and early 20th century, were run like 'republics' with many
checks and balances against fraud and seizing power of managers or large shareholders. Governance
goes back as there were always implementation of standards, regulation of prices as well as entry to

In the 21st century there has been many corporate collapses and changes in the legislation of
corporate governance. An inadequate internal risk management leads to failures which then leads to
the global financial crisis, as The Turner Review (2009) identified. The UK Companies Act 2006
highlights that a stakeholder must hold major responsibility by companies with a result of emphasis
divergent from a stakeholder view of accountability to a broad understanding of corporate
governance (Solomon 2013). Recently the UK's scheme for corporate governance and risk
managements represents the stakeholder – oriented approach for the global environment of financial
strain and ambiguity. Case Study: Marks & Spencer Marks & Spencer (M&S) is the case study for

The Global System's Effect on Climates Essay
The Global System's Effect on Climates
The global pattern of climate is affected by:
* latitude
* land and sea
* relief
* ocean currents
Latitude ========
The Equator receives greater amounts of solar heating than latitudes further north or south. Places
therefore nearer the Equator are much warmer than those closer to the Poles. Nearer the Poles
precipitation will be more variable with lower temperatures. More will fall as snow, covering the
ground for long periods in winter.
The amount of solar energy received by each hemisphere varies because of the tilt of the Earth and
its orbit around the sun. This gives summer and winter seasons. Places nearer ... Show more content

The ITCZ or low pressure zone moves north and south with the overhead sun. In June there will be
low pressure (ITCZ) over the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N). Warm, moist Trade Winds from over the
Atlantic Ocean bring heavy summer rains. In December when the overhead sun is south of the
Equator the sub–tropical high pressure zone moves south over the Tropic of Cancer. The hot
descending air gives a winter dry season.
Around 60° north and south of the Equator the global circulation of air produces another zone of
low pressure, where warm tropical air from the south west converges with cold polar air.
Depressions form and at the fronts warm air is forced to rise over the cold denser air causing frontal
rainfall. In the British Isles depressions can occur throughout the year providing a steady, reliable
rainfall. Further south, in Rome, depressions are rare in summer, which is therefore drier and hotter
than in the British Isles.
High pressure over the Poles, creates cold polar deserts.
Land and sea ============
Land masses become much hotter than the water in the oceans in summer, but lose heat much faster
during the winter. Continental areas therefore have more extreme climates than coastal areas.
Hot land masses in summer warm the air above, which expands and rises creating low pressure
areas and convectional currents. Summer thunderstorms are therefore more common

Energy Crisis And The Uk
Energy crisis in the UK
The United Kingdom is in the midst of a power shortage with fossil fuels running low and the
closure of the coal mines and ageing nuclear power stations. In the upcoming winter months parts of
the UK are likely to have "power blackouts.
The UK is struggling to supply the vast amount of energy needed and it is said that supplies sre
likely to be close to running out asoon as the winter 2015. The demand for energy is higher than the
supply.
National Grid and Ofgem have recently warned the government of the increased risk of potential
power shortages, particularly in 2015/16. To comply with the EU Large Combustion Plan Directive
(LCPD), a significant number of coal–and oil–fired power plants are due to close by the end ...

The drastic closure of coal and nuclear power stations has reduced the supply available for the UK

economic growth.Energy prices are projected to remain high or increase for many reasons. The UK
output is declining as power stations are being closed and costly measures are put in place to cut

Emerson's Self Reliance
R.W. Emerson's Self–Reliance The essay has three major divisions: the importance of self–reliance
(paragraphs 1–17), self–reliance and the individual (paragraphs 18–32), and self–reliance and
society (paragraphs 33–50). As a whole, it promotes self–reliance as an ideal, even a virtue, and
contrasts it with various modes of dependence or conformity. "Self–Reliance" Paragraphs 1–17. The
Importance of Self–Reliance. Emerson begins his major work on individualism by asserting the
importance of thinking for oneself rather than meekly accepting other people's ideas. As in almost
all of his work, he promotes individual experience over the knowledge gained from books: "To
believe that what is true in your private heart is true for all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The metaphor of a corpse as the receptacle of memory is a shocking—but apt—image of the
individual who is afraid of contradiction. In this vivid image of the "corpse of . . . memory,"
Emerson asks why people hold onto old beliefs or positions merely because they have taken these
positions in the past. Being obsessed with whether or not you remain constant in your beliefs
needlessly drains energy—as does conformity—from the act of living. After all, becoming mature
involves the evolution of ideas, which is the wellspring of creativity. It is most important to review
constantly and to reevaluate past decisions and opinions, and, if necessary, to escape from old ideas
by admitting that they are faulty, just as the biblical Joseph fled from a seducer by leaving his coat in
her hands, an image particularly potent in characterizing the pressure to conform as both seductive
and degrading. Noteworthy in this discussion on consistency is the famous phrase "A foolish
consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." The term "hobgoblin," which symbolizes fear of the
unknown, furthers the effect produced by the "corpse" of memory and reinforces Emerson's
condemnation of a society that demands conformity. Citing cultures that traditionally frown on
inconsistency, Emerson points out that history's greatest thinkers were branded as outcasts for their
original ideas—and scorned as such by their peers.

Essay on Persian Gulf War
The Persian Gulf is one of the few regions whose importance to the United States is obvious. The
flow of Gulf oil will continue to be crucial to the economic well–being of the industrialized world
for the foreseeable future; developments in the Gulf will have a critical impact on issues ranging
from Arab–Israeli relations and religious extremism to terrorism and nuclear nonproliferation. Every
president since Richard Nixon has recognized that ensuring Persian Gulf security and stability is a
vital U.S. interest.
The Clinton administration's strategy for achieving this goal during the president's first term was its
attempted "dual containment" of Iraq and Iran. This is more a slogan than a strategy,
however, and the policy may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence no U.S. Gulf policy will satisfy everyone in every respect. That makes it all the more
essential that any adjustment in U.S. policy toward Iraq and Iran be preceded by extensive
consultations with friendly Gulf leaders. Inadequate dialogue and unilateral action have caused
some insecurity in the region and weakened trust in U.S. steadfastness.
When the British withdrew from the Persian Gulf in 1971, the United States became the principal
foreign power in the region. For almost three decades it has pursued the goal of preserving regional
stability, using a variety of means to that end, particularly regarding the northern Gulf powers of
Iraq and Iran.
At first the United States relied on Iran as its chief regional proxy, supporting the shah's regime in
the hope that it would be a source of stability. This policy collapsed in 1979 with the Iranian
Revolution, when Iran switched from staunch ally to implacable foe. During the 1980s, the United
States strove to maintain a de facto balance of power between Iraq and Iran so that neither would be
able to achieve a regional hegemony that might threaten American interests. The United States
provided some help to Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–88, moved in other ways to counter
the spread of Iranian–backed Islamic militancy, and provided––with Israeli encouragement––some
help to Iran,

Brazilian Beer consumption expanded by a thumping 11% in 2010
Brazil is the world's fourth largest market for Beer, with over 85 million barrels produced and
distributed in 2010 alone. The annual consumption per capita is 54 litres.

(Brazilian Bubble, 2012)
The tradition of brewing in Brazil dates back to German immigration in the early 1800's. The first
breweries date from the 1830's.
The brand Bohemia is claimed to be the first Brazilian beer, with production starting in 1853 in the
city of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. Bohemia is the oldest Brazilian beer which is now owned by
Anheuser–Busch InBev. Two important brands, Antarctica and Brahma, started production in the
1880's.
Over the past 15 years Brazil has imported brands of beer from Europe (for example, The
Netherlands and Belgium). These imports are more expensive than locally brewed rivals. There are
a growing number of bars and beer shops dedicating themselves to selling a large range of craft and
imported. International brands are produced in Brazil, such as Stella Artois and Heineken, but are
dedicated to the premium market with small market share.
Pilsener Beers are the most consumed in Brazil (98% of the market share), with only a small number
of rivals. Majority of the market belongs to AmBev, the owner of the Brahma, Antarctica, Bohemia
and Skol brands. Brazil's largest brewer was formed in 1999 from the merger of the

Over that period, per capita wine consumption fell 3% per annum, while total world wine
consumption fell 1.4% per annum from 29.4 million tonnes to 22.0 million tonnes.
The decline in global wine consumption from 1980 to 2000 is the consequence of global population
growth being biased towards non–wine–consuming regions (i.e. Africa, Middle East and Asia) and a
changing alcohol consumption pattern in traditional wine consuming regions.
For example, total alcohol consumption in Europe has declined over the past few decades while beer
and spirits have increased market penetration.

Unsurprisingly, the Europeans dominate global wine consumption. The French consumed nearly

Automobile
What is electric car
Electric car is an alternate fuel automobile that uses electricity instead of petrol or diesel. These
automobiles have electric motors and controllers used for propulsion. These vehicles do not use the
traditional or the common methods of propulsion like ICE (internal combustion engine). These cars
are energy efficient and are capable of reducing city pollution because of the zero tail pipe emission.
The functioning of the cars greatly depends on the quality of the battery used in the car. The poor
battery may result into long hours of recharging and poor speed with poor acceleration. These cars

Further, electric car also have high a price–tag attached to them, making it unattractive to buyers.
But if you run out of juice, why not just recharge?
Sure! You can definitely do that.
In the case of the Leaf, once the battery is depleted it can take up to 20 hours to completely recharge
on a 120 volt outlet, according to Nissan. On a 240 volt, it takes seven hours, and a 480 volt fast
charge station takes 30 minutes. In our instant gratification broadband society, even waiting 30
minutes is an eternity
The Chevrolet Volt and Cruze are approximately the same size.
The Volt has a buy in of approximately $40,000. The Cruze starts at $18,000.
If you include the available $7,500 tax credit for buying the Volt, that cost comes down to $32,500.
Is the Volt worth the $14,000 premium over the Cruze, a car which already gets phenomenal city (25
MPG) gas mileage?
If we say that gas costs $4 per gallon, the Cruze would need to be filled up 225 times before that
$14,000 gap is brought to $0. According to GM, the Cruze's range per tank is estimated to be 390
miles, so that means the 225 fill ups would occur over the course of 88,000 miles.
That is almost eight years of driving, and according to The New York Times, Americans keep their
cars for an average of around nine years.

Confederation from 1815 to 1866, see Bundesversammlung (German Confederation).
The Bundestag (Federal Diet; pronounced [ˈbʊndəstaːk]) is a legislative body in Germany. In
practice Germany is governed by a bicameral legislature, of which the Bundestag serves as the
lower house and the Bundesrat the upper house. The Bundestag was established by the German
Basic Law of 1949, as the successor to the earlier Reichstag. It meets in the Reichstag Building in

Understandably, the opposition parties are active in exercising the parliamentary right to scrutinize
government actions.
One striking difference when comparing the Bundestag with the British Parliament is the lack of
time spent on serving constituents in Germany. This is in part due to Germany's electoral system. A
practical constraint on the expansion of constituent service is the limited personal staff of Bundestag
deputies. Despite these constraints especially those deputies that are elected directly normally try to
keep close contact with their constituents and to help them with their problems, particularly when
they are related to federal policies or agencies.
Constituent service does also take place in the form of the Petition Committee. In 2004, the Petition
Committee received over 18,000 complaints from citizens and was able to negotiate a mutually
satisfactory solution to more than half of them. In 2005, as a pilot of the potential of internet
petitions, a version of e–Petitioner was produced for the Bundestag. This was a collaborative project
involving The Scottish Parliament, International Teledemocracy Centre and the Bundestag 'Online
Services Department'. The system was formally launched on 1 September 2005, and in 2008 the
Bundestag moved to a new system based on its evaluation.[1]

The Discovery Of Penicillin During The World Of Medicine
Definition: A Scottish researcher, Alexander Fleming, discovered penicillin in September 1928. At
the time, Fleming was experimenting with the influenza virus in a lab in London (Penicillin). After
coming back from a two week vacation, Fleming noticed a mold had developed on an accidentally
contaminated staphylococcus culture plate (Penicillin). Upon examination of the mold, he noticed
that the culture prevented the growth of staphylococci. Fleming had discovered the world 's first
antibiotic. Significance: The discovery of penicillin changed the world of medicine enormously.
With its development, diseases that were previously severe and often fatal, such as bacterial
meningitis, could now be easily treated (Penicillin). Throughout history, soldiers would have
experienced injuries that would have caused death without the discovery of penicillin and other
antibiotics that soon got discovered after it. Penicillin was discovered half way into WWII, and the
Allies only had access of it. Without penicillin, the Allied powers might not have won the war like
they did. They had a huge advantage due to the fact that the Axis powers fought without penicillin,
instead relying on sulpha drugs, which were far less effective (Wainwright, Milton, and Sulaiman
Alharbi). Today, deaths by infectious bacterial diseases are only one–twentieth of what they were in
1900, before any antibiotic chemicals had been discovered (The First Miracle Drug). The main
causes of death today in the world

Essay about Lincoln, Labor and Liberation
Lincoln, Labor and Liberation
The free labor ideology of the nineteenth century was grounded in the beliefs that Northern free
labor was superior to Southern slave labor. The key factor that made this system unique was "the
opportunity it offers wage earners to rise to property–owning independence." [1] It was this free
labor ideology and not the republicanism of the Revolutionary War era that caused slavery to be
problematic by the time of the Civil War. This ideology was comprehensive–it had economic, social,
moral, and political aspects. All facets of the theory need to be explored in order to fully understand
how and why slavery became such an important issue.

This concept of the dignity of labor was not new. Most Americans came from a Protestant
background, in which "nobility of labor was an article of faith." [3] In Calvinist theology, each man
had a divine calling. In order to properly live life, each man should provide evidence that he was
predestined to enter heaven. Wealth became a way of serving God on earth in the 17th, 18th, and
19th centuries. Labor was a religious value and many aspects of a successful work ethic were
obligations. These beliefs were more concentrated in the Northeast. In Rochester, New York, in the
1830s for example, Charles Finney, an evangelist during the Second Great Awakening, took part in
this spiritual revival. The Second Great Awakening is known as "a missionary crusade that
transformed America". [4] People who wished to slow the social and political change of the
Industrial Revolution and reinforce social control through Christian values organized this
resurgence. They wished for modernity with Christian self–control. [5] Charles Finney's arrival in
Rochester provided a solution to the "social disorder" and "moral confusion" the town was facing.
[6] The town was encountering much uncertainty with its adjustment to a free labor economy.
Therefore, industrial capitalist beliefs of the free labor ideology became attached to visions of a
perfect moral order based on individual freedoms.

The Irish Republican Army Ideology
The Irish Republican Army ideology is still living in Northern Ireland, nearly a century after the
organization's establishment. Although the IRA has since disbanded, the spirit is kept alive by a
number of splinter factions, including the Provisional, Continuity, and Real IRAs. Not many
terrorist organizations can maintain a campaign this extensive in time. The long history of the IRA
campaign of terror leads to many political, social, religious, educational and economic effects. It
also contributes to international problems about which we may only be able to speculate.

Department of State says they have also been involved in robberies and assassinations. Their targets
include the police in Northern Ireland, Protestant communities in Northern Ireland, the British

information regarding the number of attacks committed by the Real IRA. According to the MIPT
Terrorism Knowledge Base, the rIRA have participated in 29 total incidents, while the State
Department says that there have been more than 80 attacks since 1999. Another report stated that the
rIRA was responsible for nine terrorist attacks in 1998 alone, including its most deadly (Melaugh).
The most effective attack by the Real IRA occurred on August 15, 1998 in Omagh, Northern Ireland.
On that day 29 people were killed and around 220 were wounded. Among the dead was a woman
who was 8 months pregnant with twins. A false warning was issued 30 minutes before the bomb
went off to Ulster Television in Belfast. Law enforcement officials moved people away from the
location of the warning, only to have moved them closer to the actual location, causing even more
injury (Omagh). The public was so outraged with the bombing that the Real IRA announced they

Appendix 1 presents two tables with all the relevant indicators. Most of the cars are purchased using
a loan, hence that if the interest rate goes up; a decline in sales is to follow as taking a loan becomes
less attractive (ONS, 2009). One prospective forecast though, is that the interest rate is expected to
remain around 0.5% until recovery is commencing although the oil prices are rocking sky high
which makes it more expensive to both produce and use the car (ONS, 2009).In 2008, the
unemployment rate was 5.7% of the economically active population and has increased to 7.9%
between past May to July which indicates that there are more people available at higher
qualifications to do the job, but at the same time, production levels in the UK are cut (HRM Guide,
2009). This fall in car manufacturing can also be traced back to the steel producing firm Corus who
announced to cut 3,500 jobs of which 2,500 in the UK at the beginning of this year. Steel prices had
seen a rapid rise worldwide, before the recession. The sudden decline in current recession prices,
evident in Table 1, could enable Primo to purchase necessary steel for production at lower costs than
previously, saving on costs. World Carbon Steel Transaction Prices World Steel PricesUS $/tonne |

Independence Day Reconstruction
Independence Day is celebrated annually on the fourth of July. Americans pride themselves in being
connoisseurs of liberty and all that it entails. However, this nation has not always been that way.
There was a time when freedom was restricted to those of a particular race; that race being white. If
an individual was blessed enough to live in America prior to the Civil War, they were free, assuming
the coloring of their skin was fair. After the Civil War, the definition of "freedom" had to be
reevaluated, and it came at a time of reconstruction. President Johnson and a Radical Republican
Congress had very different opinions on how freedom was defined. President Johnson initially
appeared to be an ally for the Radical Republicans, but he had ... Show more content on

He argued that the natural laws controlling humanity impact everything. The government owed its
citizens nothing but order. This laissez faire idea connected eagerly with the thought that society had
no reason to help the less fortunate. If they wanted to move up social classes in our American
society, why could they not apply themselves like the great Andrew Carnegie had? He was the
ultimate rags to riches story, after all. Or why would they not take advantage of the drastically easier
jobs offered in factories, thanks to Frederick Taylor? The hard workers would not only survive but
thrive. The opportunities created revolutionized the American work ethic. These days, we work
smarter, not harder. Being efficient increases productivity and decreases the time needed to perform
tasks. Over 100 years after the ideas of Taylor, Carnegie, and Sumner were formulated, Americans

Tidal Power
Engineering Design for Sustainability
TIDAL WAVE ENERGY
Introduction
Tidal power is a form of energy which derives directly from the relative motions of the Earth/Moon
system, and to a lesser extent from the Earth/Sol system.
Tidal energy is gained from the exchange of large bodies of water. Changes in water levels, and
associated tidal currents, are due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. This makes Tidal
Power completely predictable; furthermore, because it is created by relative motion of the special
bodies, it is in–exhaustible.
Therefore Tidal power is much more reliable than other renewable sources such as wind or solar
power and will long outlast fossil fuels.
Tidal Power in the UK
It is estimated that tidal power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At high tide sea water flows into the reservoir through a one way gate. The gate closes when the tide
begin to fall and when the tide is low enough, the stored water is released at pressure through
turbines, back into the sea. The rotation of these turbines generates electricity.
The first commercial–scale tidal generating barrage rated at 240 MW was built in La Rance. There
is smaller plant in Nova Scotia, rated at 20 megawatts (enough power for 4,500 homes).
The Dam for the tidal power plant on the estuary of the Rance River, Bretagne, France
The viability of Barrage systems has been questioned due to high civil infrastructure costs and
environmental issues. Although this method have proven very durable, barrage–style power plants
are very expensive to build and are fraught with environmental problems from the accumulation of
silt within the dam catchment area (requiring regular, expensive dredging).
There are only a few potential sites across the globe and there are only three functioning plants
worldwide (Rance River, Bay of Fundy and Kislaya Guba).
Tidal Stream Systems
Engineers have created two new kinds of devices to harness the energy of tidal currents and generate
renewable, pollution–free electricity. These are: Vertical–axis and Horizontal–axis models. They are
determined by the orientation of a subsea, rotating shaft that turns a gearbox linked to a turbine with

Edgar Allan Poe Accomplishments
Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, artist, pundit and editorial manager best known for
reminiscent short stories and lyrics that caught the creative energy and enthusiasm of peruses around

Mexican–made Coca–Cola may often be found for sale in stores catering to the Hispanic immigrant

the special dietary restrictions for observant Jews. Some Orthodox Jews do not consume corn during
the holiday. Bottled with yellow caps, this variant can be found in some areas of the US around
April.[10] Risks arising from over–consumption[edit] In the February 2010 death of a 31–year–old
New Zealand woman, the coroner concluded "were it not for the consumption of very large
quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris, it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how

A way that the tribes overcame this issue was by setting up different points and each drummer
would acknowledge the sender's message by a series of beats on the drum. After the message was
confirmed received then the message would be sent to the next receiver.
In the times of the American Indians, the tribes would use smoke signals as a form of wireless
communication. The downside to this form of communication was the limited distance based on line
of sight. Due to a limited alphabet and the issues, that the wind causes would increase the chances
that the communication would be lost or misinterpreted. Soon followed was the introduction of the
semaphore flag. The semaphore flag system is one used to convey information at a distance by using
signals with flags, paddles or gloved hands. The downside to this form of wireless communication is
that it is limited to line of sight as well, and that because this had to take place in the open the
chances of your message being stolen is increased.

"In the nineteenth century, light beams were used for short–haul communications, particularly in

blinking lights from sender to receiver. Again, this was effective over limited distances and provided
a quiet, yet visible means of communication. Drawbacks included limited

The Melting Of The Ice Caps
Ice cores taken from the Arctic have shown that carbon dioxide levels are much higher now than the
last thousands of years. The higher amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere means warmer
temperatures. There is now stronger evidence linking the warming of the ice to human activity.
Global warming is caused by the green house gases, which leads to the melting of the ice, thereby
affecting the ecosystem. Therefore, there is a need for everyone to reduce the amount of carbon
emissions that causes the warming effect. The melting of the ice caps is the biggest and fastest
change to the Earth ever caused by human activity. Alun Anderson, author of "The Great Melt The
Coming Transformation of the Arctic", states that "Temperature rise was always expected to be
fastest in the Arctic. White ice reflects sunlight back into space like a giant mirror, but when it turns
into dark water, the heat is soaked up instead. The seas then warm, more ice melts, and even more
heat is absorbed in a destructive feedback loop that amplifies temperatures." The disappearance of
the ice is by no means the end of the Arctic itself. Humans will not only have destroyed the Arctic
but transformed it as well, making it more like the waters of the south. Humans have contributed to
greenhouse gases by burning coal and oil, such as gasoline, deforestation and other gases that are
released into the air. As greenhouse gases are released into the Arctic, they will carry with them the
possibility of increasing

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic impacts represent a suite of habitat alterations that, although having
different causes, often have similar methods of affecting the mussel fauna. For instance, logging and
channelization are very different disturbances, but both generate sediments. These “hydraulic
impacts” thus overlap each other to one degree or another. I have attempted to ... Show more

A survey in 1970 of the reservoir found four mussel species. Prior to its impoundment, Ortmann
(1918) reported 64 species from the same general area. In addition, the 1970 survey found mussels
primarily on flooded preimpoundment land (overbank), not in the original river channel habitat. This
probably was due to critically depleted oxygen levels in the channel. Elsewhere, during construction
of the Nickajack Dam, the Tennessee River was dewatered at the construction site (Isom 1972).
Seventeen species were found. Ortmann (1925) had found 25, for a cumulative total of 33 species
reported for this reach. Missing in the latter survey were many endangered and rare species.
Whether this was due to the presence of the Hales Bar Dam, 6.4 miles upstream, or other causes was
not known. It may be argued that mussel faunal composition changes over time whether dams are
built or not. However, Parmalee et al. (1982) documented a fauna that remained essentially
unchanged for several millennia until impounded by a dam. The Chickamauga Reservoir of the
Tennessee River supported 46 species for perhaps 2,000 years prior to impoundment. After
impoundment, 28 species were 262 extirpated, and several are now extinct. Five species, mainly
soft–substrate tolerant taxa, have invaded the reservoir. Four original species that survived the
impoundment also have increased in abundance. Mussel diversity has declined from 64 species to
30 in the upper Chickamauga

Hydraulic Fracturing Of Natural Gas From Deep Below The...
Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing involves the extraction of natural gas from deep below
the ground. A shaft is drilled into the ground followed by a horizontal well hole that flows to the gas
layer of the earth. The well is divided into smaller sections and these sections are fractured in
sections. Fracking fluid (7 million litres of water is used, several thousand tonnes of sand and
200,000 tonnes of chemicals (de Rijke, 2013)) is then pumped into the ground at high velocity.
Cracks are produced in the rocks, the sand in the mixture prevents cracks from closing again. The
water is then pumped out and natural gas is now easily obtained. (BBC News, 2016). The first well
was constructed in 1949 and as a result of a technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three other sites have been located in Wales, two sites for just obtaining geological samples and the
other one has been refused in Llandow, Vale (Raeng.org.uk, 2016). Fracking is a hot debate in
Scotland, with labour issuing a firm no on the issue to undergo fracking as of March 2016 (BBC
News, 2016). Also, in Northern Ireland, Taboran Resources has an interest to undertake fracking
located on an area that is on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland
(Raeng.org.uk, 2016).
Two of the main companies involved in fracking in the UK include, Cuadrilla and Igas. Many
protests have been carried out to object to the fracking issue. Igas say that there are many new
investment opportunities, for example a £2.3 billion steel requirement in Britain, a £4.1 billion
waste, storage and transportation requirement and a skills and specialised equipment requirement of
£17 billion. (Igasplc.com, 2016). As of December 2012 there have been two planning applications
for fracking processes by Cuadrilla, at Prestion New Road and Roseacre Wood, before Lancashire
City council and they will frack for shale gas if it is approved. (British Geological Survey, 2015).
Many of the issues involved with fracking arise from the use of fracking in the US.
There are many positive outlooks when it comes to fracking;
Shale gas is not found all over the UK, only in certain areas. There is said to be a plentiful supply of
shale, with Cuadrilla stating that there is 5.7

E-Service Quality Essay
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The main objectives of this report were to:
1. Evaluate and compare the e–service quality of five websites in the utilities sector on the
dimensions of control, two–way communication and responsiveness on the basis of a given
questionnaire. The companies examined were British Gas, Scottish Power, Scottish Hydro Electric,
EDF Energy and E.ON Energy.
2. Critique the content of the questionnaire, developing an argument for why the questionnaire is
comprehensive, or how it can be improved by deleting and/or adding dimensions to assess e–service
quality.
To begin addressing these objectives, secondary research was carried out in order to gain a sound

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition of e–Service Quality
E–service quality (e–SQ) is a study of the quality of service received over the internet. This can be
defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and
delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000).
Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by over
half of the UK's current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com).
Clearly, this is a very large and profitable market, with businesses securing increasing numbers of
sales online each year (British Retail Consortium). Higher website quality leads to higher
profitability levels (Vanitha et al, 1999), therefore having an efficient and effective website is crucial
for obtaining sales, and e–SQ is a major factor in securing customer loyalty (Cristobal et al, 2007).
Some academic researchers have created comprehensive scales to measure e–SQ. Since
SERVQUAL is the definitive measurement of service quality (Wilson et al, 2008), it stands to
reason that many scales measuring e–SQ would be based

of the late–18th century, including the Pantheon in Rome. He was sent to Samuel Pepys Cockerell to

Southwest Calder Valley North Of Lochwinnoch
1. Introduction
Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is
situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural
beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work
within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land
has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse
shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening of
the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use of
the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and
educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small–scale agriculture. For
this assignment we are imagining that a gold–bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north of
the country park.
The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally across
the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this assignment is to
identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in this area and how
this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall biodiversity.

of a flawed Soviet reactor design RBMK (reaktor bolshoy moshchnosti kanalniy) coupled with
serious mistakes made by the plant operators. "It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation
and the resulting lack of any safety culture" (world–nuclear par 2). This disaster was caused by

This was a mistake because the reactor was never meant to operate at a level that low. That is what
caused the reactor to fill with water. The RBMK reactor is dangerously unstable when filled with
water. The operator tried but could not get the water levels into control, causing the reactors to
become even more unstable. With all the water going into the reactor, water flow was reduced
causing the power levels to slowly increase. The operator quickly tried to shut down the reactor
manually, but that caused the power levels to spike. "In the end the reactor had reached 120 times its
full power" (library.thinkquest). All the radioactive fuel that was sitting in the bottom of the reactor
disintegrated and pressure from the steam blew the top off the reactor. "All of this plus a serious
violation of safety, bad control systems, and flaws in the designs are what led to the horrible
increase of power which led to core meltdown" (pubs.acs.org). The steam explosion caused some of
a nearby building to break. The explosion caused radioactive material to be hurdled out into the sky.
Fires broke out inside and outside the reactor. Later that night the fire fighters had put the fires out,
but it still took about ten days for the helicopters to drop materials on the graphite fire to reduce
radiation release. The movement of radiation in the sky continued until June

Swami Vivekananda Swami Vivekananda (London, 1896.) | |
Swami Vivekananda (Bangla: স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ, Hindi: स्वामी विवेकानन्द) (whose pre–monastic name
was Narendranath Dutta Bangla: নরেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত, Hindi: नरेन्द्रनाथ दत्त) (January 12, 1863 – July 4,
1902) is considered one of the most famous and influential spiritual leaders of the Hindu religion.
He was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and was the founder of Ramakrishna Math
and Ramakrishna Mission. He is considered by many as an icon for his fearless courage, his positive
exhortations to the youth, his broad outlook to social problems, and countless lectures and

Wanderings in India
Soon, the young monks of Baraganore wanted to live the life of wandering monks with rags and a
begging bowl and no other possessions. On July 1890, Vivekananda set out for a long journey,
without knowing where the journey would take him. The journey that followed took him to the
length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent. During these days, Vivekananda assumed various
names like Swami Satchidananda, etc., It is said that he was given the name Vivekananda by
Maharaja of Khetri for his discrimination of things, good and bad. He is affectionately called
Swamiji by his admirers and devotees.
During these wandering days, Vivekananda stayed in king's palaces, as well as the huts of the poor.
He came in close contact with the culture of different regions of India and various classes of people
in India. Vivekananda observed the imbalance in society and tyranny in the name of caste. He
realized the need for a national rejuvenation if India was to survive at all. He reached Kanyakumari,
the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent in 24 December 1892. There he swam across the sea
and started meditating on a lone rock. He thus meditated for three days and said later that he
meditated about the past, present and future

Should Scotland Be An Independent Country
For decades the political relationship between the sovereign nation of England and the slightly
independent country of Scotland has caused much discourse for some Scot citizens. For almost 300
years the decisions that directly affected Scotland were decided from the Parliament at Westminster
Palace in London. This was not changed until rather recently when Scotland voted on its own
Parliament held in the capital of Edinburgh. But for some political parties and special interest groups
this act of recourse is not enough and they called for a national vote to answer the question "should
Scotland be an independent country?" The deciding referendum that was voted upon on September
18 of this year was the climax of the political buildup between ... Show more content on

An analysis of the three most recent Scottish referendums from the years 1979, 1997, and 2014
show that the political atmosphere has become increasingly more receptive to Scottish independence
and shifting ideologies regarding nationalism are shaping global democracies.
Geographically England and Scotland both share land on the small island northeast of continental
Europe, but the two countries did not share a government until 1707 when the legislation titled The
Union Treaty unified the nation. The death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 ended the Tudor line of
dynasty for the Kingdom of England resulting in James VI of Scotland (a Stuart) to become King of
England. His throne became known as the Union of the Crowns because never before had both
England and Scotland been ruled by the same monarch. For almost a hundred years the two
countries were ruled in this manner until King William's death when the throne was passed to his
sister–in–law Queen Anne who called for an integration of unions. Neil Oliver, historian and author
of the BBC's History of Scotland argues that Queen Anne's crown appointees that drafted the
original version of the Union Treaty that was sent before Scottish Parliament was "nothing more or
less than a suicide note awaiting a signature." Essentially it was doing just that, Scottish Parliament

Aseity Of God Research Paper
THE ASEITY OF GOD
Name
Course
Date 1. INTRODUCTION
This research project will address the topic aseity of God. It will try to bring a clear understanding
of what we mean by the use of the term aseity as used by Christians and the Theologians. The
project will discuss the features that make Christians believe that God is aseity. God's aseity is based
mainly on two aspects: self–sufficiency and self–existence. Although modern science says change is
the only constant thing and that we experience some form of mental, physical, moral and spiritual
change during our lifetime, the Bible says that though the creatures change, the creator does not
change like them. Catechists also argue that His being, holiness, goodness, power, justice, truth and
wisdom are unchangeable. With human beings experiencing constant, ... Show more content on

Old Testament and New Testament
As stated above, Aseity comes from the Latin phrase a se that means 'by oneself' or 'from oneself'.
On reading the Bible one realizes that the expression 'a se' is not used anywhere in it, this implies
that it is made–up or untrue. What the Bible provides is conclusive details on the nature of God and
His character to allow us to conclude that God is truly a se.
God is the creator of all that we know and see, this is seen in Genesis 1–2 which gives an account of
the whole creation process. Before God created anything, there was nothing but God as the Trinity,
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God had no cause He was just there. The
creation story points as, rightly so, to the conclusion that God owns everything; this idea is enforced
in Psalms 24:1 "The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell
therein."
As we have established earlier in the paper and through Acts 17:24–25, God has no needs He is
completely self–sufficient and does not depend on humans to make him whole. God does not
depend on humans and equally cannot be counseled by anyone, Romans

The American Banking System from 1800-1810 Essay example
The American Banking System from 1800–1810
Looking back to the outset of the 19th century, it is impossible to say that any real banking system
had really been developed in the US. This is to say that, though there were roughly 120 private
commercial banks that had been chartered by new state governments, the so–called system was
scarcely organized. It was ad hoc in nature and directly linked to the merchant banking practices of
the pre–independence period. The years preceding the turn of the century were important because
they brought a central banking authority onto the scene. In 1789 the new federal government
established a position for the Secretary of the Treasury. As we know, the first to hold this prestigious
title was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before achieving independence, there were no commercial banks. The first commercial bank, the
Bank of North America, was established in 1781. "British merchant banking houses stood at one end
of a long chain of credit that stretched to the American frontier. They gave short–term (less than a
year) credits to American merchants who then extended them to wholesalers of their imports, and
the wholesalers passed them on to both urban and rural retailers – country stores and wandering
peddlers" (Foner/Garraty, 1991: 191). After the Constitution was enacted in 1789, the Bank of North
America was chartered along with two state banks in Massachusetts and New York. Not
surprisingly, following in the merchant traditions of previous years, the primary function of these
banks and their followers was to make short term loans. They did this through the issuance of their
own bank notes and/or by issuing a deposit account to the individual borrower and providing them
with checks useful for withdrawl. Naturally, the issuance of bank notes was tantamount to the
promise to pay specie to the bearer upon his demand. This meant that banks were responsible for
keeping sufficient reserves to cover all demands. Maintaining sufficient reserves, however, was a
very complicated task which ultimately forced many banks into bankruptcy because they had
overexteded their loans and

Personal Narrative : Happy New Year
Happy New Year! If you are a regular reader, you may remember that I usually end the year with a
lengthy post to remind myself of my accomplishments and experiences in art during the past year.
To start I would like to say that one of the most important practices I have engaged in this past year,
has been to re–commit to writing this blog. I am very proud that I have returned to this ritual after
attempting to write unsuccessfully in a couple of other places after moving to Scotland. This blog
provides an important foundation for me and writing here each week (mostly) since 2007 has been
one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my work. I appreciate those of you who have
read and responded in some way to my words here. Thank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I love the brushes, paint, canvas, and the charcoal. I love the lines and the charcoal dust as it hangs
in the tooth of the canvas, the pigment as it glides across the surface. I love the drips and the smell
of the paint. I love the moment when two colors pop and the energy contained in a painted stroke. I
love the questioning and not knowing. I love the travels inside, while my hand keeps moving. I love
the moment of beginning and the moment of completion. I love it when it all goes to hell and the
moment a painting is reborn into something new. I love it all, truly, deeply."
February: I was offered a solo exhibition of recent works at The Tide Gallery and Coffee Shop in
Portobello, Edinburgh. I remember feeling very pleased and happy that my large pieces were going
to be on show across from the beach. It was a lovely venue and the eight large pieces from my
Delicate Balance series filled the space perfectly. The exhibition was planned to be a two–week
engagement and was held over for two more, making it a month long exhibition in the end. I was
delighted!
In other exhibition news in February, Cupola Gallery in Sheffield decided to keep my paintings I
had sent them the previous November for further exhibition. Stateside, my work was showing at The
University of Tulsa at the Zarrow Center for Art & Education, alongside some of my esteemed,
fellow Arkansan abstract painters, in Abstract ARt.
March: I am working on a new series of small works as well as a new

The Life and Contribution to the Development of the British Empire of James Cook
I) Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to describe the life and the contribution to the development of the
British Empire of one of the most important English explorers. It was in the second half of the 18th
century when James Cook, originally a poor farm boy, explored and mapped vast uncharted areas of
the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. However, James Cook was not 'only' an explorer. He can also be
called a scientist – he managed to introduce new principles into seafaring and cartography.
For better understanding, the paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction,
which throws light on the purpose and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such a structure of commerce enabled the immense growth of wealth of the country.
An imperial enthusiasm – the British found out that they could grow rich from the trade with their
colonies. As a result it led to a constant, unending search for new markets for British products, new
trading centres and eventually, new lands to settle their surplus criminals and poor, unemployed
citizens.
New inventions in navigation – these inventions had a profound influence, not only upon Britain,
but even upon much of the rest of the world. John Hadley's invention of the reflecting quadrant
made it possible to determine the latitude at noon or by night. Extremely accurate, it was quickly
adopted by the admiralty (1730). John Harrison's ship chronometer was to revolutionise the world's
shipping (1736). A new method of combating scurvy was found – James Lind recommended to use
citrus juice (1747) and finally, John Campbell introduced the new sextant to the Royal Navy (1757).
All of these inventions helped to create Britain's naval supremacy.
A new philosophical approach – the 18th century in Western Europe is the beginning of the Age of
Reason, the philosophers and scientists stressed the value of global discovery, of learning more
about the earth and of collecting unusual flora and fauna from around the globe.
Thus Great Britain established (or

Job satisfaction, the most widely studied work attitude, is then discussed. We look at job satisfaction among Canadians, the effects of job satisfaction on work behaviour, and new findings regarding the relationship between job satisfaction and employee performance and customer satisfaction. The next section provides an overview of organizational commitment, including the types of commitment, consequences of commitment, and ways to build affective commitment. Organizational commitment is strongly influenced by trust and the psychological contract, so the final section of this chapter looks at the meaning and elements of both concepts. EMOTIONS IN THE WORKPLACE The tragic events of September 11, 2001, in the United States are permanently etched in our minds. The four hijacked planes and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers evoked a variety of emotions in people, such as anger, sadness, and fear. Airline employees particularly identified with these shocking events. "We were torn apart," says Lucie Leduc, a flight attendant with Air Transat in Montreal. "We could totally imagine it. . . . There were flight attendants who couldn't fly for a while; some are still not flying."2 Lucie Leduc and her co–workers at Air Transat experienced the strong emotions associated with the events of September 11, 2001. However, the Walker Review (2009) classifies that the role of the corporate governance as protection of shareholders' interests by providing the company's strategic conduct and overseeing capable managers to achieve it. Robert E. Wright (2014) argued that the corporate governance in the late 19th and early 20th century, were run like 'republics' with many checks and balances against fraud and seizing power of managers or large shareholders. Governance goes back as there were always implementation of standards, regulation of prices as well as entry to trades. The pillar for modern company law is the concept of ownership and shareholder rights as this is identified by Tricker (2012). During the time from 17th and ... An inadequate internal risk management leads to failures which then leads to the global financial crisis, as The Turner Review (2009) identified. The UK Companies Act 2006 highlights that a stakeholder must hold major responsibility by companies with a result of emphasis divergent from a stakeholder view of accountability to a broad understanding of corporate governance (Solomon 2013). Recently the UK's scheme for corporate governance and risk managements represents the stakeholder – oriented approach for the global environment of financial strain and ambiguity. The Global System's Effect on Climates Essay The Global System's Effect on Climates The global pattern of climate is affected by: * latitude * land and sea * relief * ocean currents Latitude ======== The Equator receives greater amounts of solar heating than latitudes further north or south. Places therefore nearer the Equator are much warmer than those closer to the Poles. Nearer the Poles precipitation will be more variable with lower temperatures. More will fall as snow, covering the ground for long periods in winter. The amount of solar energy received by each hemisphere varies because of the tilt of the Earth and its orbit around the sun. This gives summer and winter seasons. Places nearer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ITCZ or low pressure zone moves north and south with the overhead sun. In June there will be low pressure (ITCZ) over the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N). Warm, moist Trade Winds from over the Atlantic Ocean bring heavy summer rains. In December when the overhead sun is south of the Equator the sub–tropical high pressure zone moves south over the Tropic of Cancer. The hot descending air gives a winter dry season. Around 60° north and south of the Equator the global circulation of air produces another zone of low pressure, where warm tropical air from the south west converges with cold polar air. Depressions form and at the fronts warm air is forced to rise over the cold denser air causing frontal rainfall. In the British Isles depressions can occur throughout the year providing a steady, reliable rainfall. Further south, in Rome, depressions are rare in summer, which is therefore drier and hotter than in the British Isles.

Land and sea ============ Land masses become much hotter than the water in the oceans in summer, but lose heat much faster during the winter. Continental areas therefore have more extreme climates than coastal areas. Hot land masses in summer warm the air above, which expands and rises creating low pressure areas and convectional currents. • 23. Emerson's Self Reliance R.W. Emerson's Self–Reliance The essay has three major divisions: the importance of self–reliance (paragraphs 1–17), self–reliance and the individual (paragraphs 18–32), and self–reliance and society (paragraphs 33–50). As a whole, it promotes self–reliance as an ideal, even a virtue, and contrasts it with various modes of dependence or conformity. "Self–Reliance" Paragraphs 1–17. The Importance of Self–Reliance. Emerson begins his major work on individualism by asserting the importance of thinking for oneself rather than meekly accepting other people's ideas. As in almost all of his work, he promotes individual experience over the knowledge gained from books: "To believe that what is true in your private heart is true for all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The metaphor of a corpse as the receptacle of memory is a shocking—but apt—image of the individual who is afraid of contradiction. In this vivid image of the "corpse of . . . memory," Emerson asks why people hold onto old beliefs or positions merely because they have taken these positions in the past. Being obsessed with whether or not you remain constant in your beliefs needlessly drains energy—as does conformity—from the act of living. After all, becoming mature involves the evolution of ideas, which is the wellspring of creativity. It is most important to review constantly and to reevaluate past decisions and opinions, and, if necessary, to escape from old ideas by admitting that they are faulty, just as the biblical Joseph fled from a seducer by leaving his coat in her hands, an image particularly potent in characterizing the pressure to conform as both seductive and degrading. Noteworthy in this discussion on consistency is the famous phrase "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." The term "hobgoblin," which symbolizes fear of the unknown, furthers the effect produced by the "corpse" of memory and reinforces Emerson's condemnation of a society that demands conformity. Citing cultures that traditionally frown on inconsistency, Emerson points out that history's greatest thinkers were branded as outcasts for their original ideas—and scorned as such by their peers. ... The flow of Gulf oil will continue to be crucial to the economic well–being of the industrialized world for the foreseeable future; developments in the Gulf will have a critical impact on issues ranging from Arab–Israeli relations and religious extremism to terrorism and nuclear nonproliferation. Every president since Richard Nixon has recognized that ensuring Persian Gulf security and stability is a vital U.S. interest. That makes it all the more essential that any adjustment in U.S. policy toward Iraq and Iran be preceded by extensive consultations with friendly Gulf leaders. Inadequate dialogue and unilateral action have caused some insecurity in the region and weakened trust in U.S. steadfastness. When the British withdrew from the Persian Gulf in 1971, the United States became the principal foreign power in the region. For almost three decades it has pursued the goal of preserving regional stability, using a variety of means to that end, particularly regarding the northern Gulf powers of Iraq and Iran. At first the United States relied on Iran as its chief regional proxy, supporting the shah's regime in the hope that it would be a source of stability. This policy collapsed in 1979 with the Iranian Revolution, when Iran switched from staunch ally to implacable foe. During the 1980s, the United States strove to maintain a de facto balance of power between Iraq and Iran so that neither would be able to achieve a regional hegemony that might threaten American interests. The United States provided some help to Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–88, moved in other ways to counter the spread of Iranian–backed Islamic militancy, and provided––with Israeli encouragement––some help to Iran, ... Understandably, the opposition parties are active in exercising the parliamentary right to scrutinize government actions. One striking difference when comparing the Bundestag with the British Parliament is the lack of time spent on serving constituents in Germany. This is in part due to Germany's electoral system. A practical constraint on the expansion of constituent service is the limited personal staff of Bundestag deputies. Despite these constraints especially those deputies that are elected directly normally try to keep close contact with their constituents and to help them with their problems, particularly when they are related to federal policies or agencies. • 55. The Discovery Of Penicillin During The World Of Medicine Definition: A Scottish researcher, Alexander Fleming, discovered penicillin in September 1928. At the time, Fleming was experimenting with the influenza virus in a lab in London (Penicillin). After coming back from a two week vacation, Fleming noticed a mold had developed on an accidentally contaminated staphylococcus culture plate (Penicillin). Upon examination of the mold, he noticed that the culture prevented the growth of staphylococci. Fleming had discovered the world 's first antibiotic. Significance: The discovery of penicillin changed the world of medicine enormously. With its development, diseases that were previously severe and often fatal, such as bacterial meningitis, could now be easily treated (Penicillin). Throughout history, soldiers would have experienced injuries that would have caused death without the discovery of penicillin and other antibiotics that soon got discovered after it. Penicillin was discovered half way into WWII, and the Allies only had access of it. Without penicillin, the Allied powers might not have won the war like they did. They had a huge advantage due to the fact that the Axis powers fought without penicillin, instead relying on sulpha drugs, which were far less effective (Wainwright, Milton, and Sulaiman Alharbi). Today, deaths by infectious bacterial diseases are only one–twentieth of what they were in 1900, before any antibiotic chemicals had been discovered (The First Miracle Drug). Essay about Lincoln, Labor and Liberation Lincoln, Labor and Liberation The free labor ideology of the nineteenth century was grounded in the beliefs that Northern free labor was superior to Southern slave labor. The key factor that made this system unique was "the opportunity it offers wage earners to rise to property–owning independence." [1] It was this free labor ideology and not the republicanism of the Revolutionary War era that caused slavery to be problematic by the time of the Civil War. This ideology was comprehensive–it had economic, social, moral, and political aspects. All facets of the theory need to be explored in order to fully understand how and why slavery became such an important issue. Free labor became the center of the Republican ideology in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [2] This concept of the dignity of labor was not new. Most Americans came from a Protestant background, in which "nobility of labor was an article of faith." [3] In Calvinist theology, each man had a divine calling. In order to properly live life, each man should provide evidence that he was predestined to enter heaven. Wealth became a way of serving God on earth in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Labor was a religious value and many aspects of a successful work ethic were obligations. These beliefs were more concentrated in the Northeast. In Rochester, New York, in the 1830s for example, Charles Finney, an evangelist during the Second Great Awakening, took part in this spiritual revival. The Second Great Awakening is known as "a missionary crusade that transformed America". [4] People who wished to slow the social and political change of the Industrial Revolution and reinforce social control through Christian values organized this resurgence. They wished for modernity with Christian self–control. [5] Charles Finney's arrival in Rochester provided a solution to the "social disorder" and "moral confusion" the town was facing. [6] The town was encountering much uncertainty with its adjustment to a free labor economy. Therefore, industrial capitalist beliefs of the free labor ideology became attached to visions of a perfect moral order based on individual freedoms. Republicans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on The Irish Republican Army Ideology The Irish Republican Army Ideology The Irish Republican Army ideology is still living in Northern Ireland, nearly a century after the organization's establishment. Although the IRA has since disbanded, the spirit is kept alive by a number of splinter factions, including the Provisional, Continuity, and Real IRAs. Not many terrorist organizations can maintain a campaign this extensive in time. The long history of the IRA campaign of terror leads to many political, social, religious, educational and economic effects. It also contributes to international problems about which we may only be able to speculate. The most violent splinter group from the Provisional IRA is named the Real Irish ... There is a good deal of conflicting information regarding the number of attacks committed by the Real IRA. According to the MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base, the rIRA have participated in 29 total incidents, while the State Department says that there have been more than 80 attacks since 1999. Another report stated that the rIRA was responsible for nine terrorist attacks in 1998 alone, including its most deadly (Melaugh). The most effective attack by the Real IRA occurred on August 15, 1998 in Omagh, Northern Ireland. On that day 29 people were killed and around 220 were wounded. Among the dead was a woman who was 8 months pregnant with twins. A false warning was issued 30 minutes before the bomb went off to Ulster Television in Belfast. Law enforcement officials moved people away from the location of the warning, only to have moved them closer to the actual location, causing even more injury (Omagh). One prospective forecast though, is that the interest rate is expected to remain around 0.5% until recovery is commencing although the oil prices are rocking sky high which makes it more expensive to both produce and use the car (ONS, 2009).In 2008, the unemployment rate was 5.7% of the economically active population and has increased to 7.9% between past May to July which indicates that there are more people available at higher qualifications to do the job, but at the same time, production levels in the UK are cut (HRM Guide, 2009). However, this nation has not always been that way. There was a time when freedom was restricted to those of a particular race; that race being white. If an individual was blessed enough to live in America prior to the Civil War, they were free, assuming the coloring of their skin was fair. After the Civil War, the definition of "freedom" had to be reevaluated, and it came at a time of reconstruction. President Johnson and a Radical Republican Congress had very different opinions on how freedom was defined. Tidal Power Engineering Design for Sustainability TIDAL WAVE ENERGY Introduction Tidal power is a form of energy which derives directly from the relative motions of the Earth/Moon system, and to a lesser extent from the Earth/Sol system. Tidal energy is gained from the exchange of large bodies of water. Changes in water levels, and associated tidal currents, are due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. This makes Tidal Power completely predictable; furthermore, because it is created by relative motion of the special bodies, it is in–exhaustible. Therefore Tidal power is much more reliable than other renewable sources such as wind or solar power and will long outlast fossil fuels. Tidal Power in the UK It is estimated that tidal power ... There is smaller plant in Nova Scotia, rated at 20 megawatts (enough power for 4,500 homes). The Dam for the tidal power plant on the estuary of the Rance River, Bretagne, France The viability of Barrage systems has been questioned due to high civil infrastructure costs and environmental issues. A way that the tribes overcame this issue was by setting up different points and each drummer would acknowledge the sender's message by a series of beats on the drum. After the message was confirmed received then the message would be sent to the next receiver. In the times of the American Indians, the tribes would use smoke signals as a form of wireless communication. The downside to this form of communication was the limited distance based on line of sight. Due to a limited alphabet and the issues, that the wind causes would increase the chances that the communication would be lost or misinterpreted. Soon followed was the introduction of the semaphore flag. The semaphore flag system is one used to convey information at a distance by using signals with flags, paddles or gloved hands. The downside to this form of wireless communication is that it is limited to line of sight as well, and that because this had to take place in the open the chances of your message being stolen is increased. Science that Drove Wireless Development (Wenclewicz) "In the nineteenth century, light beams were used for short–haul communications, particularly in military contexts. The higher amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere means warmer temperatures. There is now stronger evidence linking the warming of the ice to human activity. Global warming is caused by the green house gases, which leads to the melting of the ice, thereby affecting the ecosystem. Therefore, there is a need for everyone to reduce the amount of carbon emissions that causes the warming effect. The melting of the ice caps is the biggest and fastest change to the Earth ever caused by human activity. Alun Anderson, author of "The Great Melt The Coming Transformation of the Arctic", states that "Temperature rise was always expected to be fastest in the Arctic. White ice reflects sunlight back into space like a giant mirror, but when it turns into dark water, the heat is soaked up instead. The seas then warm, more ice melts, and even more heat is absorbed in a destructive feedback loop that amplifies temperatures." The disappearance of the ice is by no means the end of the Arctic itself. Humans will not only have destroyed the Arctic but transformed it as well, making it more like the waters of the south. Humans have contributed to greenhouse gases by burning coal and oil, such as gasoline, deforestation and other gases that are released into the air. Prior to its impoundment, Ortmann (1918) reported 64 species from the same general area. In addition, the 1970 survey found mussels primarily on flooded preimpoundment land (overbank), not in the original river channel habitat. This probably was due to critically depleted oxygen levels in the channel. Elsewhere, during construction of the Nickajack Dam, the Tennessee River was dewatered at the construction site (Isom 1972). Seventeen species were found. Ortmann (1925) had found 25, for a cumulative total of 33 species reported for this reach. Missing in the latter survey were many endangered and rare species. Whether this was due to the presence of the Hales Bar Dam, 6.4 miles upstream, or other causes was not known. It may be argued that mussel faunal composition changes over time whether dams are built or not. However, Parmalee et al. (1982) documented a fauna that remained essentially unchanged for several millennia until impounded by a dam. The Chickamauga Reservoir of the Tennessee River supported 46 species for perhaps 2,000 years prior to impoundment. After impoundment, 28 species were 262 extirpated, and several are now extinct. Five species, mainly soft–substrate tolerant taxa, have invaded the reservoir. Four original species that survived the impoundment also have increased in abundance. A shaft is drilled into the ground followed by a horizontal well hole that flows to the gas layer of the earth. The well is divided into smaller sections and these sections are fractured in sections. Fracking fluid (7 million litres of water is used, several thousand tonnes of sand and 200,000 tonnes of chemicals (de Rijke, 2013)) is then pumped into the ground at high velocity. Cracks are produced in the rocks, the sand in the mixture prevents cracks from closing again. The water is then pumped out and natural gas is now easily obtained. (BBC News, 2016). Also, in Northern Ireland, Taboran Resources has an interest to undertake fracking located on an area that is on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (Raeng.org.uk, 2016). Two of the main companies involved in fracking in the UK include, Cuadrilla and Igas. Many protests have been carried out to object to the fracking issue. Appendices..................................................................................................................12 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Definition of e–Service Quality E–service quality (e–SQ) is a study of the quality of service received over the internet. This can be defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000). Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by over half of the UK's current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com). Clearly, this is a very large and profitable market, with businesses securing increasing numbers of sales online each year (British Retail Consortium). Higher website quality leads to higher profitability levels (Vanitha et al, 1999), therefore having an efficient and effective website is crucial for obtaining sales, and e–SQ is a major factor in securing customer loyalty (Cristobal et al, 2007). Some academic researchers have created comprehensive scales to measure e–SQ. Since SERVQUAL is the definitive measurement of service quality (Wilson et al, 2008), it stands to reason that many scales measuring e–SQ would be based ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 135. Southwest Calder Valley North Of Lochwinnoch 1. Introduction Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening of the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use of the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small–scale agriculture. For this assignment we are imagining that a gold–bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north of the country park. The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally across the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this assignment is to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in this area and how this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall biodiversity. 2. Methodology We carried out this assignment by going on a field visit to Muirshiel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 139. The Factors Leading to the Chernobyl Disaster Essay The Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986 was one of the most dangerous nuclear explosions this world has ever seen, and some people are still paying the price. This disaster not only affected Europe, it affected the whole world. This was during the time of the Cold War, and it government corruption. The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design RBMK (reaktor bolshoy moshchnosti kanalniy) coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. "It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture" (world–nuclear par 2). This disaster was caused by multiple things, human error among them. According to World Nuclear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was a mistake because the reactor was never meant to operate at a level that low. That is what caused the reactor to fill with water. The RBMK reactor is dangerously unstable when filled with water. The operator tried but could not get the water levels into control, causing the reactors to become even more unstable. With all the water going into the reactor, water flow was reduced causing the power levels to slowly increase. The operator quickly tried to shut down the reactor manually, but that caused the power levels to spike. "In the end the reactor had reached 120 times its full power" (library.thinkquest). All the radioactive fuel that was sitting in the bottom of the reactor disintegrated and pressure from the steam blew the top off the reactor. "All of this plus a serious violation of safety, bad control systems, and flaws in the designs are what led to the horrible increase of power which led to core meltdown" (pubs.acs.org). The steam explosion caused some of a nearby building to break. The explosion caused radioactive material to be hurdled out into the sky. Fires broke out inside and outside the reactor. Later that night the fire fighters had put the fires out, but it still took about ten days for the helicopters to drop materials on the graphite fire to reduce radiation release. The movement of radiation in the sky continued until June ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They took alms to satisfy their hunger and their other needs were taken care of by Ramakrishna's richer householder disciples. Wanderings in India Soon, the young monks of Baraganore wanted to live the life of wandering monks with rags and a begging bowl and no other possessions. On July 1890, Vivekananda set out for a long journey, without knowing where the journey would take him. The journey that followed took him to the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent. During these days, Vivekananda assumed various names like Swami Satchidananda, etc., It is said that he was given the name Vivekananda by Maharaja of Khetri for his discrimination of things, good and bad. He is affectionately called Swamiji by his admirers and devotees. During these wandering days, Vivekananda stayed in king's palaces, as well as the huts of the poor. He came in close contact with the culture of different regions of India and various classes of people in India. Vivekananda observed the imbalance in society and tyranny in the name of caste. He realized the need for a national rejuvenation if India was to survive at all. He reached Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent in 24 December 1892. There he swam across the sea and started meditating on a lone rock. He thus meditated for three days and said later that he meditated about the past, present and future ... • 147. Should Scotland Be An Independent Country For decades the political relationship between the sovereign nation of England and the slightly independent country of Scotland has caused much discourse for some Scot citizens. For almost 300 years the decisions that directly affected Scotland were decided from the Parliament at Westminster Palace in London. This was not changed until rather recently when Scotland voted on its own Parliament held in the capital of Edinburgh. But for some political parties and special interest groups this act of recourse is not enough and they called for a national vote to answer the question "should Scotland be an independent country?" The deciding referendum that was voted upon on September 18 of this year was the climax of the political buildup between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An analysis of the three most recent Scottish referendums from the years 1979, 1997, and 2014 show that the political atmosphere has become increasingly more receptive to Scottish independence and shifting ideologies regarding nationalism are shaping global democracies. Geographically England and Scotland both share land on the small island northeast of continental Europe, but the two countries did not share a government until 1707 when the legislation titled The Union Treaty unified the nation. The death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 ended the Tudor line of dynasty for the Kingdom of England resulting in James VI of Scotland (a Stuart) to become King of England. His throne became known as the Union of the Crowns because never before had both England and Scotland been ruled by the same monarch. For almost a hundred years the two countries were ruled in this manner until King William's death when the throne was passed to his sister–in–law Queen Anne who called for an integration of unions. Neil Oliver, historian and author of the BBC's History of Scotland argues that Queen Anne's crown appointees that drafted the original version of the Union Treaty that was sent before Scottish Parliament was "nothing more or less than a suicide note awaiting a signature." • 151. Aseity Of God Research Paper THE ASEITY OF GOD Name Course Date 1. INTRODUCTION This research project will address the topic aseity of God. It will try to bring a clear understanding of what we mean by the use of the term aseity as used by Christians and the Theologians. The project will discuss the features that make Christians believe that God is aseity. God's aseity is based mainly on two aspects: self–sufficiency and self–existence. Although modern science says change is the only constant thing and that we experience some form of mental, physical, moral and spiritual change during our lifetime, the Bible says that though the creatures change, the creator does not change like them. Catechists also argue that His being, holiness, goodness, power, justice, truth and wisdom are unchangeable. With human beings experiencing constant, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Old Testament and New Testament As stated above, Aseity comes from the Latin phrase a se that means 'by oneself' or 'from oneself'. On reading the Bible one realizes that the expression 'a se' is not used anywhere in it, this implies that it is made–up or untrue. What the Bible provides is conclusive details on the nature of God and His character to allow us to conclude that God is truly a se. God is the creator of all that we know and see, this is seen in Genesis 1–2 which gives an account of the whole creation process. Before God created anything, there was nothing but God as the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God had no cause He was just there. The creation story points as, rightly so, to the conclusion that God owns everything; this idea is enforced in Psalms 24:1 "The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." As we have established earlier in the paper and through Acts 17:24–25, God has no needs He is completely self–sufficient and does not depend on humans to make him whole. God does not depend on humans and equally cannot be counseled by anyone, Romans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 155. The American Banking System from 1800-1810 Essay example The American Banking System from 1800–1810 Looking back to the outset of the 19th century, it is impossible to say that any real banking system had really been developed in the US. This is to say that, though there were roughly 120 private commercial banks that had been chartered by new state governments, the so–called system was scarcely organized. It was ad hoc in nature and directly linked to the merchant banking practices of the pre–independence period. The years preceding the turn of the century were important because they brought a central banking authority onto the scene. In 1789 the new federal government established a position for the Secretary of the Treasury. As we know, the first to hold this prestigious title was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before achieving independence, there were no commercial banks. The first commercial bank, the Bank of North America, was established in 1781. "British merchant banking houses stood at one end of a long chain of credit that stretched to the American frontier. They gave short–term (less than a year) credits to American merchants who then extended them to wholesalers of their imports, and the wholesalers passed them on to both urban and rural retailers – country stores and wandering peddlers" (Foner/Garraty, 1991: 191). After the Constitution was enacted in 1789, the Bank of North America was chartered along with two state banks in Massachusetts and New York. Not surprisingly, following in the merchant traditions of previous years, the primary function of these banks and their followers was to make short term loans. They did this through the issuance of their own bank notes and/or by issuing a deposit account to the individual borrower and providing them with checks useful for withdrawl. Naturally, the issuance of bank notes was tantamount to the promise to pay specie to the bearer upon his demand. This meant that banks were responsible for keeping sufficient reserves to cover all demands. Maintaining sufficient reserves, however, was a very complicated task which ultimately forced many banks into bankruptcy because they had overexteded their loans and ... • 159. Personal Narrative : Happy New Year Happy New Year! If you are a regular reader, you may remember that I usually end the year with a lengthy post to remind myself of my accomplishments and experiences in art during the past year. To start I would like to say that one of the most important practices I have engaged in this past year, has been to re–commit to writing this blog. I am very proud that I have returned to this ritual after attempting to write unsuccessfully in a couple of other places after moving to Scotland. This blog provides an important foundation for me and writing here each week (mostly) since 2007 has been one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my work. I appreciate those of you who have read and responded in some way to my words here. Thank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I love the brushes, paint, canvas, and the charcoal. I love the lines and the charcoal dust as it hangs in the tooth of the canvas, the pigment as it glides across the surface. I love the drips and the smell of the paint. I love the moment when two colors pop and the energy contained in a painted stroke. I love the questioning and not knowing. I love the travels inside, while my hand keeps moving. I love the moment of beginning and the moment of completion. I love it when it all goes to hell and the moment a painting is reborn into something new. I love it all, truly, deeply." February: I was offered a solo exhibition of recent works at The Tide Gallery and Coffee Shop in Portobello, Edinburgh. I remember feeling very pleased and happy that my large pieces were going to be on show across from the beach. It was a lovely venue and the eight large pieces from my Delicate Balance series filled the space perfectly. The exhibition was planned to be a two–week engagement and was held over for two more, making it a month long exhibition in the end. I was delighted! In other exhibition news in February, Cupola Gallery in Sheffield decided to keep my paintings I had sent them the previous November for further exhibition. Stateside, my work was showing at The University of Tulsa at the Zarrow Center for Art & Education, alongside some of my esteemed, fellow Arkansan abstract painters, in Abstract ARt. The Life and Contribution to the Development of the British Empire of James Cook I) Introduction The purpose of this paper is to describe the life and the contribution to the development of the British Empire of one of the most important English explorers. It was in the second half of the 18th century when James Cook, originally a poor farm boy, explored and mapped vast uncharted areas of the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. However, James Cook was not 'only' an explorer. He can also be called a scientist – he managed to introduce new principles into seafaring and cartography. For better understanding, the paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which throws light on the purpose and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such a structure of commerce enabled the immense growth of wealth of the country. An imperial enthusiasm – the British found out that they could grow rich from the trade with their colonies. As a result it led to a constant, unending search for new markets for British products, new trading centres and eventually, new lands to settle their surplus criminals and poor, unemployed citizens. New inventions in navigation – these inventions had a profound influence, not only upon Britain, but even upon much of the rest of the world. John Hadley's invention of the reflecting quadrant made it possible to determine the latitude at noon or by night. Extremely accurate, it was quickly adopted by the admiralty (1730). John Harrison's ship chronometer was to revolutionise the world's shipping (1736). A new method of combating scurvy was found – James Lind recommended to use citrus juice (1747) and finally, John Campbell introduced the new sextant to the Royal Navy (1757). All of these inventions helped to create Britain's naval supremacy. A new philosophical approach – the 18th century in Western Europe is the beginning of the Age of Reason, the philosophers and scientists stressed the value of global discovery, of learning more about the earth and of collecting unusual flora and fauna from around the globe. Thus Great Britain established (or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
