Straight Commission Case Study
Straight Committee
Now, let's look at the pros and cons of working as a straight commission salesperson:
Benefit:
1. Opportunities higher overall. Straight commission opportunities almost always pay a higher
commission rate paid salary + commission from the same position. When I was faced with taking
that first, I was scared at first thought the decision not to have a stable wage income plummeted.
However, when I sit down with a calculator, I realized I could not lose. The commission rate is so
high, only the sales will pay how much I pay each month to the hair, and that only one sale a month
and not spend a lot of specific work. Finally, I quadrupled my income just by switching the
commission, although I did not sell more than I received.
2. Free. This can be a double–edged sword. I always hated it and tried to enter the office ... Show

Higher fees. You will not be reimbursed mileage, handset subsidies, and all other expenses,
including those that you might not have thought of. Agents are generally required to carry out a
commercial insurance policy, the work of the first committee I kept asking me to be a $ 1 million
liability insurance car. It only took a few weeks, only to find a company that offers such a high limit,
but also ultimately cost more $ 400 / month. (The other side is that if you have structured the right
thing, all these costs are also tax breaks, including rent or repay part of the home office deduction.)
4. Government. You need to submit paperwork to form a business entity, you should probably get at
least one or more licenses or license, you must be careful to avoid all
Necessary tax paperwork and time deposits, if you do not want to get into trouble.
5. suspected security. Like having a regular job, you said the company may decide to leave the
agent, you may be terminated without cause, or they can become bankrupt at any time. Unlike
ordinary people, you will not have any severance payments or other compensation to you, if these

The Hero's Journey Ehud Summary
By verse eighteen the main characters and plot have been set. Ehud is going to deliver the Israelites
from the hand of the fat King Eglon. Ehud is in the king's room presenting a tribute. At this point the
tensions for the reader start to rise as the narrator has informed the reader that Ehud has a double
edged sword on his right thigh. As Ehud asked to see the king alone as there is a message from
Elohim (meaning God or gods), the reader can identify what will happen next as the story begins to
reach the climax. King Eglon rises, giving Ehud a more clear killing blow as the climax of the story
is reached. Ehud's sword plunges into the king is a very descriptive and graphic manner. The sword
remains inside the dying and dead king since his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a place in the story where translation gets a little lost. There is a phrase that cannot be
translated and could mean a variety of things. The Believers Church Bible Commentary states in
very matter of fact manner that Ehud escaped through the toilet that was in the upper chamber that
led to the lower chamber. If this is the case, the reader can fully see the extent of the resourcefulness
of Ehud. The reader also gets a bit of humor at the portrayal of the servants of the king. The
embarrassment of finding their king dead after simply thinking that he was relieving himself would
be humiliating. The reader can imagine that Ehud was able to simply walk out of the palace as it
wasn't yet known that he killed their king. He escapes and continues into the last section leading the
triumphant military movement of Israel. This section is most definition the falling action as this
narrative comes to a close. Israel is convinced that God is and has defeated the Moabites so they go
and take control of the Jordan River that separates Moab from Canaan. They kill about ten thousand
Moabite men and are then free of Eglon and the

Buffalo Bill Annotation
The American frontier is an era of great pride and taming of the nature with the will to conquer.
American society is taught to never give up and peruse one's dream, to value that dream and do
whatever it takes in order to achieve it. Although this provides a double edged sword for society as it
can be the will on one side, but also be the downfall on another. For if any person is supposed to
truly resemble the American frontier, then Buffalo Bill would be that image. Yet, in a Native
American perspective, his double edged sword is a continually growing downfall for the culture.
Sherman Alexie's poem "Evolution" shows an ever growing dived in reservations around America
and the effects from its own poison. For when "Buffalo Bill opens" a pawn shop on the reservation,
natives flee to the shop in order to "pawn their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the perspective also into the past as well. For when the actual Buffalo Bill was born, indigenous
groups further west were ousted from their lands just like those in the East. The sun essentially sets
on the rise and fall of the Native people in this poem because it shows how a white man came into a
reservation and caused the same 200–hundred–year old pain again. Not only is there that pain,
Buffalo Bill has the "bill" that Native Americans pay in order to destroy their own legacy. The
reservation only gets smaller as the Natives leave and the blood toxicity lessens while the blood
alcohol levels increase. True indigenous people and their descendants are essentially "evolving" into
a new breed of people, and the only relict to show their presence is when Buffalo Bill "closes the
pawn shop" and paints a new sign over. Calling it the "THE MUSEUM OF NATIVE AMERICAN
CULTURES." Yet to even know about such information, Buffalo Bill requires that one pay the bill,
and this only results in seeing the things the same Native people had just

The Cuban Embargo: A Double Edged Sword
In five decades, the Cuban embargo has failed to achieve its purpose, damaged U.S interest, and
affected the Cuban people. Since the year 1959 when Fidel Castro took over Cuba, the country has
been under communist rule. It's been over 50 years since the United States placed and embargo
against Cuba. The embargo also known as "the blockade" places travel restrictions and trade of
commerce on any one who is under the US jurisdiction. One of the purposes of the embargo was to
turn Cuba into a democratic country and to fight for human rights. Nothing has changed and now
Cuba is blaming the U.S. for its chronic starvation and economic devastation. The U.S has had

Gonzalez was in Ecuador and was asked to speak at a conference for the World Festival and Youth

Ehud Weapons Essay
Did you know that swords were a major weapon of war during the ancient and medieval history?
They are also called the gentleman of all weapons. They were bladed weapons that have two parts,
namely the blade and the handle or the hilt. The blades were made of a hard metal, steel, or bronze.
They were sharpened blades that could be single edged or double edged. The Israelites also used
some traditional weapons. The story of Ehud, who plotted a daring one–man assassination attack on
King Eglon of Moab, is told in (Judges 3:12–30). The standard sword of this period was curved,
with one sharp edge used for slicing and slashing. It is sometimes called a sickle sword, and is the
basis of the expression "smite the enemy with the edge of the sword" (see, for example, Judges 1:8,
25; 4:15; 18:27, KJV). This type of weapon would not have served Ehud's ... Show more content on

on one end, the God Who saves and invites; the other edge is the God who exposes and judges. The
Word of God is not simply a collection of Words from God; it is the force of His will and the

Donnie Moyer Character Analysis
When it comes to small towns people who haven't lived in one tend to think that they are boring or
bland. However a chat with some of the people who have always lived in a town of less than four–
hundred people for their entire lives really paints a new picture. Donnie Moyer has lived outside of
Terril, Iowa his entire life on a farm working for his father until his passing in which he took control
of the property. When we discussed "How has the town change since you've lived here?" he
responded with "It hasn't change at all it's still the same place I grew up in." Some see this as being
bland but in today's age with all the technological change it is refreshing to see some are happy with

this point in after her response it was clear that the sense of security was a large part that contributed
to her decision to remain in this town after marrying Donnie but it begged the next question. "Why
did you choose to raise your family in a small town?" to which she replied immediately to with "We
already had family here and the community had become family as well." Now that may seem to be
an easy answer to give but the sincerity in her voice spoke more than words ever could. We went on
to discuss why she herself believed that most outsiders believe small towns are bland and boring to

Essay On Medieval Weapons
Weapons from the 1600's are not as advanced as the weapons are in today's modern time. These
weapons that are involved are shields, bows, swords, and spears. Shields in today's time are more
likely used by the department of justice which is the FBI and etc. Shields in the early European
Middle Ages were round with non–splitting wood, they were usually made with leather covers on
one or both sides of metal rims and a metal shield boss were typical. These weapons were used
throughout the whole Medieval Times. Bows and crossbows have been around for thousands of
years. In medieval Europe, archers were the snipers of their days and shot up to two hundred and

It was one of the earliest fashioned weapons used by humans. Many humans still use it for hunting
and fishing, Spears were not only used in battles but they were also used in jousting tournaments,
hunting, and plenty of other things. Spears were basically designed to be thrown or to be kept in the
hands of a human. These spears were often used in tight formations like a shieldwall. Spears could
easily be hurled from a distance or used as a secondary killing tool to the sword. The long length of
the spear usually made it uncomfortable for soldiers on foot but great for those that were on
horseback who charge at their enemies to knock them off to the ground or to stab them on the
ground. The use of these weapons and this armor made one soldier have more power than ten to
fifteen regular soldiers. Throwing spears were rarely seen when the middle ages started to come
around. Spears in general started to lose fashion in the fourteenth century due to infantry but
evolved into pikes in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Swords were the primary weapon for a

The Corporate Tax Transparency Report Essay
Introduction
The Australian Taxation Office (Henceforth known as the ATO) released an inaugural corporate tax
transparency report, showing the 579 local and foreign–based companies that paid no company tax
in 2013–14 had combined turnover of $405.9 billion and taxable income of $4 billion. The report,
which forms part of a global push for improved corporate transparency, provides a positive outlook
into corporate transparency, although the critical issue of the minimal tax paid by large corporation's
remains. This paper aims to analyse the ATO corporate tax transparency report for the 2013–14
income year to uncover and critique the appallingly low, or inexistent, tax paid by large
corporations, especially those with international transactions. Initially, the ATO's corporate
transparency report shall be outlined to corroborate the argument corporate tax paid is minimal.
Furthermore, the amount of corporate tax paid outlined in the report shall be critiqued, with a focus
on corporations with international transactions. As a final point, a number of recommendations shall
be outlined concerning corporations paying their 'fair share' of tax. It shall be argued that corporate
transparency is transitioning in the correct direction and should continue doing so, although reforms
are necessary to ensure large corporations pay their 'fair share' of tax. The starting point for this
argument is the aforementioned report.

A Brief Look at a Legionnaire's Equipment
A brief look at a legionnaire's equipment
Very few empires throughout history have rivaled the resplendence and sheer size of the Roman
Empire at its peak. The height of the empire was achieved in the year 117 ad with a size of 6.5
million sq. km. One of the defining factors that allowed the romans to have such successful
conquests and to maintain such a large empire is the standardization of equipment that its troops had
to abide by. The quality of the equipment was another factor that played a role in their success.
Roman weaponry
Each roman soldier was fitted with similar equipment, the primary weapon of each was their
Gladius they also had a Pugio for their spare weapon. Depending on the era they would have had 6
plumbata's clipped to the inside of their shield or Pilum on their back for throwing.
A Gladius is a short sword ranging from 50 to 60 cm long. Gladii were double edged with a sharp
point for thrusting, making them very versatile weapons. Their hilts were composed of bone or
hardwood usually and knobbed to increase the soldiers grip on the weapon. In combat soldiers
primarily used their weapons for stabbing at stomach height, but could inflict grisly injury's as a
slashing weapon as well. The Gladius was used for many years before finally being replaced
towards the end of the Roman Empire by the Spatha.
During the later years of the Roman Empire the Gladius was replaced with the Spatha. A Spatha

A Double Edged Sword Essay
There is a growing awareness that addressing past injustices are crucial for the process of healing
and reconciliation. In order to move towards a peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and
respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. While there is an agreement between people that
the process of reconciliation must acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many
scholars debate about how such acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be
sufficiently credible and effective in improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is
crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with human rights
violations. Memorializing the past, through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely
promoted as a valuable way of redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can
memorials provide, and how can they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these
symbolic reparations to be a double–edged sword due to their strengths and weaknesses, it presents
only a fraction of the process that needs to be fulfilled for redressing the losses that were suffered by
the victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible response of victims to
perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional justice focuses on the
effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards achieving political
reconciliation and re–establishing

Social Privileges and Lack Thereof: the Double–edged Sword of Academia
Privilege, when defined as having advantages or receiving special benefits that are available
exclusively to a certain group or groups, is an extremely important social phenomena. At its most
mild, experiencing any form of privilege segregates or categorizes individuals in the group receiving
the benefits of that privilege from others who do not receive those same benefits. At its most
extreme, experience of privilege, or equally significantly the lack of privilege, violently alienates
groups of people, often in the form of cultural, political, social tensions. What are seen as social
constructions such as race, ethnicity, gender, social class or status, religion, etc. can all be seen as
mechanisms for becoming a recipient of or being denied social benefits. Social class or status
achieved through financial and educational background is one of the many mechanisms of receiving
privileged benefits that Zadie Smith writes of in her novel, On Beauty. Her character Zora Belsey's
experience of financially secure social privilege creates for her a sense of entitlement and
superiority. Even the commendable actions Zora takes in making higher education available for
those who may not otherwise have access to it become fuel for her self fulfilling savior complex.
Through her juxtaposition against Carl Thomas, an individual of lower social status than herself,
Zora performs a near perfect display of how

The Impact Of Multiculturalism And Multiracialism In...
Multiculturalism and multiracialism has become the proud hallmark of Singapore society today.
However, the issues that come together with them still seem to plaque the community even after
more than five decades. In retrospect, these issues are more protuberant in the implementation level
than at the policy–making stage. The way Chua Beng Huat asserted in his paper titled
Multiculturalism in Singapore: an instrument of social control, it seems as though multiculturalism
and multiracialism are double–edged swords which can cut both ways.
In the abovementioned paper, Chua (2003) asserts that "under the CMIO (Chinese, Malay, Indian,

Comparing Romeo And Juliet And The Girl Who Fell From The Sky
The Rose by Bette Midler relates to characters in the stories of Romeo and Juliet by William
Shakespeare and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow which include Romeo
Montague, and Rachel Morse by the love that they experience. Romeo portrays through the play that
he needs love and will do anything to keep it with Juliet. Although Rachel has many bad
relationships in the book, she learns that she can live independently and doesn't have to rely on a
man. Both characters portray the cons and pros of love.
Romeo longs for the tender love of Juliet. He goes great lengths in order to maintain his love. In the
early acts of the play, Romeo is ecstatic about the qualities in Juliet. He never loses that, but he does
learn that love is a double edged sword. In the first 6 lines of the Poem, Midler writes,
"Some say love, It is a river,
That drowns the tender reed,
Some say love it is a razor,
That leaves the soul to bleed." (1–6). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

her parents, they order her to marry Paris. Juliet Refuses, and fakes her death. Still mourning,

"These violent delights have violent ends and in their triump die, like fire and powder Which, as
they kiss, consume" (II.VI.V). Friar Lawrence explains to Romeo that his violent delights have

new jobs, improvement in schools, and lower crime rates however I feel like it contradicts itself
because it causes conflicts with lower income families and that is where we get the term from
"displaced citizens." I feel like those who do encourage gentrification, they don't even take the time

they only think about how these new amenities can be beneficial for themselves. Although, they

Advancements In Medieval Warfare In The Middle Ages
Medieval Warfare is warfare in the middle ages or the time period before the 18th century.
(McDonald, 2010). Advancements in weapons caused for more gruesome and bloody war. The use
of swords, spears, axes, and arrows caused for many fierce and bloody battles. Advancements in
intelligence made for better tactics, strategies, travel and more importantly, more victories. The two
types of warfare in medieval times were either a battle that was head to head, or, one of the scariest
kinds, which has taken the lives of many and destroyed kingdoms (McDonald,2010). The most
effective and deadly advancements were the ways of punishment for those who were caught or those
who surrendered, whether it be imprisonment and torture, or immediate execution. Being a prisoner
of war was not the spot any soldier wanted to be in. Medieval wars were very dangerous wars
because there were not many of advancements in health back then, so fatal wounds meant certain
death most of the time(McDonald, 2010) There are many ways that kingdoms defended themselves
with things like moats, bridges, walls (Morris & Exploring–Castles, n.d.). Luckily for the attackers,
there are ways to get pass defences, such as battering rams for heavy doors. Also, mining was used
to go under a defensive wall. If people thought that chemical warfare was a new thing, then those
people were wrong. In medieval times, if a castle had wooden structures, then that castle was in
grave danger of having it set on fire.

Nostalgia In London 1802 Diction
Similar in theme to Wordsworth's "London, 1802" is Percy Shelley's poem "England in 1819".
Looking at Shelley's poem in terms of historical context and nostalgia allows the political sonnet to
be read as a piece of restorative nostalgia for the targeted reading audience of this works time
period. This sonnet is written in iambic pentameter however the rhyme scheme of this sonnet differs
from the scheme of a traditional English sonnet. The rhyme scheme within this poem follows
ABABAB,CDCD,CCDD. Connecting this structure to the concept of nostalgia allows for the "a–b"
section to be viewed as "reflective nostalgia". The "a–b" section strays from the form of a traditional
sonnet and repeats itself, this repetition mimics the act of "longing" as the section goes back to the
same rhyme scheme. Looking at the first six lines, the speaker emphatically describes the horrors
and hardships of England's government and the life of the proletariat. The act of dwelling on the
current state of England demonstrates reflective nostalgia and forces the reader to reflect on the state
of England before these changes took place. For the intended reading audience of this poem this
work would call attention to the changes of society and manipulate time forcing the reading to
imagine the past of England and look forward in fear to the future as "reflective nostalgia does not
follow a single plot but explores ways of inhabiting many places at once and imagining different
time zones" (Boym 4). As the first six lines repeat themselves in rhyme scheme outside of the
traditional sonnet structure, this connects to the idea of reflective nostalgia in mimicking reflective
nostalgia fear of "returning to current states" (Boym 4). This section, evoking reflective nostalgia in
the poems intended reading audience acts as a radical political stance against the King, Capitalism
and state of the Church. In dwelling on the changes and corruption in society, this section uses
reflective nostalgia to "cherise shattered fragments of memory and demoralizes space" (Boym 5).
The fragments of "cherished memory" is England before the ongoing wars stemmed from the
revolutions, the "demoralized space" comes from the manipulation of time that nostalgia causes

Argumentative Essay: Banning The Box
The pursuit of economic and employment equality should be the right of all; however, it is
unfortunate that those with criminal histories are often deprived of this. The question of disclosure
or banning the box is a dual edged sword by which many convicted individuals continue to suffer
from. As discussed by Kevin Hyde in the video Ban The Box, many of the jobs that exclude persons
with criminal backgrounds have little or nothing to do with the job being performed and that a key
to reduction in crime is the employment of those individuals who are qualified to perform the tasks
(Ban The Box –TedxJacksonville, 2015). Banning the box in theory from the community corrections
side offers several promising benefits. The reduction of taxpayer funding because the offender is
working and no longer a cost to the state or community, the reduction in recidivism due to
employment, thus the decline in crimes committed as a means of support, and obviously gainful or
marginal employment which raises the economic status of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

disclosure to seek other applicants if the applicant is disqualified for the charges. As Doleac and

Charlie Gordon's Flowers For Algernon
Intelligence is a double–edged sword.
Hi I am Daniel Keyes, welcome to Writer's Week. Today, I want to speak about how I presented the
statement, 'Intelligence is a double–edged sword' in my novel, Flowers for Algernon. If you have not
read the novel, it is about an intellectually disabled young man named Charlie Gordon, in his
thirties, who is presented with the opportunity to greatly increase his intelligence through a surgical
procedure. His gradual intelligence causes him to realise certain matters in his life, both in the past
and present, which he was oblivious to before the surgery. What he starts to realise because of his
increasing intelligence affects him for the better and worse. I will speak about some positive and
negative side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His awareness of how things really are, causes others to draw away from Charlie and Charlie to
draw away from others. Pre–surgery, Charlie links intelligence to a talking point, leading to more
friends. His intelligence has the opposite effect that he imagines. He states at the beginning, "I hope
I get smart soon because I want to lern everything there is in the werld like the collidge boys
know...about art and politiks and god." (p15) However when he's at a high stage intelligence, he
views these activities as 'childish', providing 'no pleasure' and 'elementary'. As his intelligence
increases, he falls out of touch with his few friends at the bakery. He feels that he causes them to
'shrink and emphasize their inadequacies.' (p.74) Charlie writes, 'I have betrayed them and they
hated me for that'. From his colleague's viewpoint, Charlie's spontaneous intelligence is something
'forbidden' and portrays them as 'a bunch of dopes'. (p.75) His rapidly growing intelligence
eventually surpasses that of professors, scientists and doctors, including Dr. Strauss, Burt, and
Professor Nemur, who designed and performed his surgery. With no one to relate or compete with
intellectually, Charlie grows critical and uncompassionate. Charlie's attitude causes Alice Kinnian to
angrily remark, "You're different. You've changed. And I'm not talking about your IQ It's your
attitude toward people." (p85) This change of attitude is evident when Charlie describes Dr. Strauss
and Professor Nemur as 'frauds', 'phonies' and 'ordinary men working beyond their abilities',
descriptions all contrasting with how he originally viewed them. (p105,108) Although he strives to
'guard against the natural tendency to look down them', Charlie continues with his uncaring attitude
towards those below him. (p107) Thus, his awareness resulting from intelligence, is

Stress, The Double-Edged Sword Research Paper
Stress, The Double–Edged Sword
Stress, it is a part of our life that we can't not avoid or escape. There probably isn't anyone in the
world today that hasn't dealt with it. It dwells in the work place, at school, in the home and most
importantly, in you. So what is stress? And why do we have something that does us so much harm?
Simply put, stress is an adaptive response, your body's response to an emotionally disturbing,
disquieting or threatening event (1). Often times, it is the tension caused when demands from work,

Much of the stress involved are the result of more abstract threats and nothing as concrete as a
hungry bear eyeing you. Not to say that that kind of stress is non–existent in our lives, anyone living
in a large, busy city like New York or Los Angeles can tell you that fear of predation adds quite a bit
to their stress quota. The only difference is that the predators are other humans. Yet much of the
times, this is not the kind of stress that seems to be the most detrimental to our health. The top ten
stressors in life are (1).: 1. Death of a spouse 2. Divorce 3. Marital separation 4. Jail term 5. Death of
close family member 6. Personal injury or illness 7. Marriage 8. Losing ones job 9. Marital
reconciliation 10. Retirement
All these stressors are in one way or another, related to change, which in our minds are often seen as
threatening and therefore stressful (4). With change, comes the need to deal with what was once
familiar but not anymore, the need to adapt. Sadly, people tend to dwell on the change, regret events
to lead to it or worry if more change might be in store for the future. This kind of thinking can lead
to overstressing and health problems. With the stress that comes with everyday life, having a
mindset that brings about more stress is even more detrimental.
When the stress response is activated chronically to deal with psychological or physical stressors,
stress–related disease can result (3). The

The World Of Doublespeak Analysis
What is doublespeak? Is it a useful and the language should be using? Possibly people will come up
with different opinions and suggestions of doublespeak. Some people will say that doublespeak is
bad and people should avoid using it; for example, in Lutz's essay, "The World of Doublespeak,"
Lutz wrote about the negative aspects of doublespeak. He defines doublespeak as, "language that
pretends to communicate but really doesn't" (Lutz/P.347). In some case he is right as doublespeak
can make things sinful, virtuous; something terrible, be wonderful, and so on. However,
doublespeak is a powerful communication skill; People should be familiar with it and be able to use
it. It would be as dangerous as Lutz mentions in his article when people used ... Show more content

His main argument on doublespeak is that the doublespeak misleads the audience. This is pretty
much true. The human's recognition can be easily changed by the uses of language that their
information comes from. For example, once the news reporter called a terrorist, "the freedom
fighters," most of the audiences who feel less fear and anxiety. Although, what the terrorist are really
are killing people and forcing innocent people to group suicide with them, when their title change
some of the audiences will easily justify the terrorists' behaviors. There's another example of
doublespeak's dishonesty; when a person with money and authority, for example, the Prime
Minister, force a regular citizen by treated them. It would sound very bad when a people says that
the Prime Minister threated a citizen, but it will sound nothing if people says that the Prime Minister
made a deal with the regular citizen, and in most case it this really happened the journalist would
use doublespeak and change threat to deal or some positive words. Due to the way, doublespeak can
change the reality of something it is like political tools that lead to dishonesty and trust issues, but
that's also the reason why people should learn double

Pros And Cons Of Charismatic Leadership
The word Charisma means "an inspired and divine gift". Therefore, charismatic leadership involves
creating a self–image so powerful that people are naturally drawn to you. The charismatic leadership
style relies on the charm and persuasiveness of the leader. Not only does charismatic leaders are
driven by their passion but are also committed to their cause. However, charismatic leadership is
when an individual is a relatively experienced communicator. Furthermore, charismatic leaders are
very eloquent and in this regard are able to communicate through their followers on a profound and
emotional level. By all means, leaders who are charismatic are able to articulate their messages that

On the other hand, an unethical leader will exploit the followers to advance their personal agenda by
practicing personal charisma with: focus on personal goals, discourages or punishes divergent
views, one–way communication and closed to criticism. Additionally, there can be a number of
pitfalls that needs to be avoided so that charisma does not turn into a negative attribute. For instance,
some leaders can become addicted to their charisma and may begin to feel that they only need to
walk into a room and be the center of attention. This is because recognition and validation are a
result of charismatic leadership than can be powerful. Therefore, charismatic leaders should avoid
this double edge sword by making sure not to take their skills for granted. Another aspect related to
charismatic leadership that could be considered a double edged sword is that several organizations
can become obsessed with the charismatic leader. In this regard, the charismatic leader takes away
the spotlight and attention from the rest of the individuals within the organization. Thus,
accountability is then diminished, when the focus is shifted to the personal characteristics of the
leader. Not only does the attributes of a charismatic leader leads to success but the very same
attributes can become negative which is then the double edged sword. Thus, the recognition of
charismatic leadership and its subsequent careful monitoring is very essential to avert abuse and

Analysis Of Plautus 's Comedies Seem Be A Double Edged Sword
Plautus's comedies seem to be a double edged sword. One edge makes an audience laugh while the
other is embedded with hidden messages. A Roman audience watching The Brothers Menaechmus
might even laugh at a cleverly concealed insult. Plautus, a Roman playwright, managed to create
this double tasking play by using a setting which down played the stereotypical Greek setting of
Athens, and opted instead for something a little less Greek. The setting also played a part in creating
a link between brother and culture. The main setting allowed Menaechmus I to symbolize the Greek
persona while the sub setting correlated Menaechmus II with the Romans. In the end, Plautus's play
is highly ironic since the surface of the play could mean one ... Show more content on

Setting is clearly a tool used by Plautus. For example, take the scene where Menaechmus I starts to
sing about clients, "They want lots of clients, all want lots of clients./Who cares if they're honest or
not – are they rich?/Who cares if they're honest, we'll take them with zest – /If they're rich." While
this song, void of virtue, might amuse a Roman audience, it would nonetheless prove to be ironic
because the system of clients and patrons is a Roman tradition. Underneath that entertaining melody
is an elusive criticism to a Roman tradition. Underneath that joyful tune is an insult to the Romans,
where they are called both greedy and dishonest. Consequently, Plautus gets away with this by
embedding it into a song that might otherwise be overlooked as nothing more than a device to
amuse the audience. Plautus does not only shroud commentary with melodies but within the
characters as well. He does this by almost making the play an allegory. Menaechmus I, because he
was kidnapped as a child and lived most of his life in Epidamnus, a Greek setting, he affiliates with
the Greek persona. On the other hand, because Menaechmus II spent most of his life in Sicily, an
acquired Roman territory, he is the symbol for the Romans. With this in mind, one can pull out
deeper significance than that which simply lies on the surface of this comedy. Such significance
could even be Plautus's own

Discrimination Is An Interesting Concept- A Double Edged...
Too Quick To Judge Discrimination is an interesting concept– a double–edged sword. Having
discriminating taste is a good thing, liking things indiscriminately is not. You should be able to
decide which type of art you enjoy, what type of food, or music, but you should not be
indiscriminate when sharing your thoughts online. The latter only opens you up to ridicule. We are
all discriminated against constantly, in every way, every day, by sex, height and weight, color,
religion and so many other things that are unconsciously noticed. The question is; when is
discrimination bad, or even immoral, and how do we combat that? As the youngest of six children, I
have seen many friends of my family come and go through the years. Three examples of
discrimination stick out in my mind. My sister had a very close friend through high school choir
who was gay. He was just sixteen when he became close with my family and in the early stages of
coming to grips with his sexuality. His parents and brother would not accept his decision. Other
students from school would exclude him from activities because they, too, were brainwashed by
their elders. After months passed by and his parents realized this wasn't just a "phase he was going
through," they decided to get the church involved and perform a "gay exorcism." Oddly enough, it
was unsuccessful. He was then told to move out. My family was one of his few refuges. After years
away from his family, struggling through one of the most difficult

Shooting An Elephant Imperialism Essay
According to Merriam Webster, Imperialism can be described as "the practice of extending the
power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions", and over the past

"shooting an elephant" is a story that was first published in the Autumn of 1936 and set in British–

about the hatred that the natives harboured about him and also the feeling that he would get.

are determined to fully unveil the mysteries of the universe were already able to take evolution to a

Genes and artificial chromosomes can also be inserted into embryos in a process known as germ–
line gene therapy. This could be used to cure genetic disorders, including behavioral disorders such
as schizophrenia, or to insert genes which enhance intelligence or athletic performance. The benefits
of these genetic changes would be passed on to later generations.
Nevertheless, gene therapy is far from perfect; in fact, it has caused the death of many patients who
wished to cure themselves of their genetic disorders. Viruses, while the carrier of choice in most
gene therapy studies, unfortunately presents a variety of potential problems to the patient, such as
toxicity and immune and inflammatory responses. This medical procedure also has several
limitations, such as its short–lived nature, as well as the fact this treatment is most suitable only for
diseases that resulted from mutations in a single gene. It would be extremely difficult for gene
therapy to effectively treat some of the most commonly occurring multi–factorial disorders such as
heart diseases and diabetes, which are caused by the combined effects of variations in may genes.
The next technique discussed in the film, RNA interference, can be used as a means of silencing
gene expression. This can be harnessed to allow specific inhibitions of the function of any chosen
target genes, including those

The Double Edged Sword We Call Technology
The Double Edged Sword We Call Technology
In the recent years, modern technology has heavily impacted nearly every aspect of human life. The
things we experience, how we communicate, our values, how we develop from a child, technology
impacts us in such a way that we don't even realize it. As technology advances us into a more
futuristic world, it is declining us a society as well, hence the term "double edged sword". From the
beginning of humankind, technology has been developing faster and faster. The first humans had
absolutely nothing and, today, in 2016, we have literally everything. This has made people live in a
virtual world of online media and this can be dangerous because it can alter the way we have been
living since the birth of man. Technology is getting greater and greater but does that come with a
price? The more advanced technology gets, the more it seems to control us. This directly affects our
society in ways like communication, mental illnesses, environmental issues, and other ways.
Today, it is not only recommended, but it is almost demanded that we have the latest technological
gadgets in the industry. These things involve technologies such as phones, computers, tablets, and
things that we need in our everyday lives. Notice how I said the word need? According to Miriam–
Websters online dictionary the definition of the word "need" is "a physiological or psychological
requirement for the well–being of an organism". Would we as a whole society include

In Medieval times weapons were a necessary part of life to protect them from enemies and invaders.
Some of the weapons include swords, polearms, and range weapons. Swords were most commonly
used. Polearms is a closed combat weapon. Ranged weapons are used to launch things.
A Falchion is a single–edged sword that you use with one hand. The Falchion looks like a modern
machete with a crossguard. It is a close armed weapon. It was developed from butcher's knives and
farmers'. The weight is more near the end, makes it more effective. The blade is single edge with a

Longbow was so great that at the Battle of Crecy, in 1346, the French army was decimated."

a range weapon that has a bow mounted on the stock with a mechanism that holds the bow string. To
fire this a vertical rod is put up through the hole in the bottom of the notch which forces the string

much smaller draw length than other bows which gives it a much higher draw weight. With enemies
and invaders weapons had to be used to stay alive. Swords were the most commonly used. With the

polearms were a good weapon because they were used to extend the weapons especially when the
soldiers were on foot. The ranged weapons was great to use in wars because it gave a better

How Did King David Have Bladed Weapons
Did you know that swords were a major weapon of war during the ancient and medieval history?
They are also called the gentleman of all weapons. They were bladed weapons that have two parts
namely the blade and the handle or the hilt. Blades were made of a hard metal, steel, or bronze. They
were sharpened blades that could be single edged or double edged.
The width varied with the culture and era and so did the type of hilt. They could be one handed or
double as per the weight and maneuver of the sword. The hilt could be wood, leather, ivory or bone.
The warriors and the knights relied on swords a lot. They were brisk, agile, graceful and flexible.
Some were very elaborately decorated.
What type of sword did King David use to cut off Goliath's head? No one knows, however, the bible
says "King David ran and took Goliath's sword and cut off his head". King David did not have a
sword in his hand; therefore God had to provide a sword for David because David had spoken the
words. What was already done in the spiritual ream is now being done in the natural ream.

3D Printing is one of the newest and innovative technological advancements. The opportunities to
create something new and inventive is endless. It only takes one imaginative idea and this
fascinating tool can make it become a reality. "3D printing has the potential to change everything"
says a former ship engineer (Hart). This new piece of technology can have an impact not only in the

The Double Edged Sword : Myth And Reality Essay
The Double–Edged Sword: Myth and Reality
The chapter titled "Myth Today" found in Roland Barthes progressive book, Mythologies attempts
to analyze the notion of a myth within material culture while reinforcing the idea of semiotics and
unveiling the system behind it. Myth, for most people, is considered a kind of story or tale of history
that might have some truth to it. When thinking of myth, we may recall tales of Hercules and
Oedipus as well as cultural or religious phenomena such as the rebirth of Christ. Barthes has a new
definition of myth, and that it is a mode of communication where what is said is not more important
than how it is said. To review the text, I will first outline Barthes main arguments and then identify
his approaches to the unveiling of myth. I will then use his processes and apply them to Rene
Magritte's La Grand Famille.
Barthes begins the chapter by stating says the ways in which myth can be communicated, they are
diverse and are not limited to writing and imagery. All the mediums will eventually get expressed in
the same way. In the essay, Barthes claims that myth is not a language and instead, it transforms
meaning into form. The study of how it does this is classified as semiology. Semiology is an idea
that was founded by Ferdinand de Saussure, who's work Barthes read before writing this book.
Semiology is the science of forms and their significance aside from the content. Myth forms part of
this system that connects the signified to the

Viking battle tactics and weaponry continues to impact our world today. From the unique technique
that the Viking performs in battle to the powerful weapons used. The Vikings were the first and
probably the last to introduce their unique battle tactic. Which is that they had no professional
standing army and did not fight regular formations (Viking Weapons and Warfare). The formation
was to charge towards their enemies all at once, catching their enemies off guard and giving the
Vikings the advantage of the upper hand. They were able to win battles with the formation due to the
loyalty bond between the Viking men and women with their lords (Viking Weapons and Warfare).
Another unique battle tactic the Vikings introduced was the spread and lay their weapons in the
surrounding area where the battle takes place beforehand, just in case the formation were to backfire
(VIKINGS MILITARY TACTICS AND FORTIFICATIONS).

Lessons Can Be A Double Edged Sword
Humans often can only see what is immediately before them. When we see fallen brethren, we
either judge, or pity, the individual, yet in both cases there is often a lack of contemplation on this
individual's background. Despite many of us being raised on strong, and arguably, quite often
religious morals, such as "never judge thy neighbor," real–world experience dictates us to do just
that. We can be subconsciously critical when listening to someone else's woes, before ever truly
placing ourselves in their predicament. And vice versa, we can sometimes be just as supportive
towards false prophets and achievers, regardless if we understand the full amount of blood which
stains their concealed hands. Learning lessons can be a double–edged sword, when those lessons are
being taught in the same time period which we exist. For us being creatures quite knowledgeable of
the immediate world around us, being familiar with current customs, and trends, we can easily
decipher if an act of justice is just that, or if it is merely common action, perhaps fueled by more
malicious reasoning. When we explore tales from the past, we may not be quite as keen to the
society which these tales had taken place in, and therefore, we will focus our analyzation on the
meat of the meal, i.e., the morals within the story. Not knowing the exact customary traditions
during the timelines of these stories can be quite beneficial, for this ignorance of the past world can
make us nod in awe at the nobleness

The World Wide Web
The World Wide Web, propelled by various social media programs like Twitter, FaceBook and
Instagram, has become a double–edged sword in the era of Web 2.0. This double–edged sword can
be symbolized by SENDERS of information, and RECEIVERS of information.
In its early days, the primary use of the WWW was searching for information, on static 'pages', to
fulfill a particular need or request. Maps, phone numbers, product information, and the like, were
available to anyone who searched for it. The WWW was a functional, up–to–date encyclopedia of
information, available with the stroke of a keyboard, at the sender's request.
During this time, search devices like Navigator, Google, Yahoo and their many imitators, worked by
allowing one person (the sender) to find information about a multitude (the receivers). Hence the
origin of the company's name synonymous with the Internet, Google. Send a request; Google will
find an answer. It will even tell you how long it took to answer the question!
In a real sense, the days of the early WWW could be characterized as follows: Go on the Internet,
and find what you are looking for. In split second time.
Today, in the era of Web 2.0, the many forms of social media programs have caused a distinct
reversal in the most basic operation of the WWW. The roles of sender and receiver have been
reversed.
The sender is now the collector of information, gathered from data, from cookies, for sale to anyone

have varied throughout cultures and time. Most people in the middle ages admire the sword as being

Straight Commission Case Study: Higher Fees and Lack of Security

  • 1. Straight Commission Case Study Straight Committee Now, let's look at the pros and cons of working as a straight commission salesperson: Benefit: 1. Opportunities higher overall. Straight commission opportunities almost always pay a higher commission rate paid salary + commission from the same position. When I was faced with taking that first, I was scared at first thought the decision not to have a stable wage income plummeted. However, when I sit down with a calculator, I realized I could not lose. The commission rate is so high, only the sales will pay how much I pay each month to the hair, and that only one sale a month and not spend a lot of specific work. Finally, I quadrupled my income just by switching the commission, although I did not sell more than I received. 2. Free. This can be a double–edged sword. I always hated it and tried to enter the office ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Higher fees. You will not be reimbursed mileage, handset subsidies, and all other expenses, including those that you might not have thought of. Agents are generally required to carry out a commercial insurance policy, the work of the first committee I kept asking me to be a $ 1 million liability insurance car. It only took a few weeks, only to find a company that offers such a high limit, but also ultimately cost more $ 400 / month. (The other side is that if you have structured the right thing, all these costs are also tax breaks, including rent or repay part of the home office deduction.) 4. Government. You need to submit paperwork to form a business entity, you should probably get at least one or more licenses or license, you must be careful to avoid all Necessary tax paperwork and time deposits, if you do not want to get into trouble. 5. suspected security. Like having a regular job, you said the company may decide to leave the agent, you may be terminated without cause, or they can become bankrupt at any time. • 3. The Hero's Journey Ehud Summary By verse eighteen the main characters and plot have been set. Ehud is going to deliver the Israelites from the hand of the fat King Eglon. Ehud is in the king's room presenting a tribute. At this point the tensions for the reader start to rise as the narrator has informed the reader that Ehud has a double edged sword on his right thigh. As Ehud asked to see the king alone as there is a message from Elohim (meaning God or gods), the reader can identify what will happen next as the story begins to reach the climax. King Eglon rises, giving Ehud a more clear killing blow as the climax of the story is reached. Ehud's sword plunges into the king is a very descriptive and graphic manner. The sword remains inside the dying and dead king since his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a place in the story where translation gets a little lost. There is a phrase that cannot be translated and could mean a variety of things. The Believers Church Bible Commentary states in very matter of fact manner that Ehud escaped through the toilet that was in the upper chamber that led to the lower chamber. If this is the case, the reader can fully see the extent of the resourcefulness of Ehud. The reader also gets a bit of humor at the portrayal of the servants of the king. The embarrassment of finding their king dead after simply thinking that he was relieving himself would be humiliating. The reader can imagine that Ehud was able to simply walk out of the palace as it wasn't yet known that he killed their king. He escapes and continues into the last section leading the triumphant military movement of Israel. This section is most definition the falling action as this narrative comes to a close. Israel is convinced that God is and has defeated the Moabites so they go and take control of the Jordan River that separates Moab from Canaan. They kill about ten thousand Moabite men and are then free of Eglon and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Buffalo Bill Annotation The American frontier is an era of great pride and taming of the nature with the will to conquer. American society is taught to never give up and peruse one's dream, to value that dream and do whatever it takes in order to achieve it. Although this provides a double edged sword for society as it can be the will on one side, but also be the downfall on another. For if any person is supposed to truly resemble the American frontier, then Buffalo Bill would be that image. Yet, in a Native American perspective, his double edged sword is a continually growing downfall for the culture. Sherman Alexie's poem "Evolution" shows an ever growing dived in reservations around America and the effects from its own poison. For when "Buffalo Bill opens" a pawn shop on the reservation, natives flee to the shop in order to "pawn their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is the perspective also into the past as well. For when the actual Buffalo Bill was born, indigenous groups further west were ousted from their lands just like those in the East. The sun essentially sets on the rise and fall of the Native people in this poem because it shows how a white man came into a reservation and caused the same 200–hundred–year old pain again. Not only is there that pain, Buffalo Bill has the "bill" that Native Americans pay in order to destroy their own legacy. The reservation only gets smaller as the Natives leave and the blood toxicity lessens while the blood alcohol levels increase. True indigenous people and their descendants are essentially "evolving" into a new breed of people, and the only relict to show their presence is when Buffalo Bill "closes the pawn shop" and paints a new sign over. Calling it the "THE MUSEUM OF NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURES." Yet to even know about such information, Buffalo Bill requires that one pay the bill, and this only results in seeing the things the same Native people had just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Cuban Embargo: A Double Edged Sword In five decades, the Cuban embargo has failed to achieve its purpose, damaged U.S interest, and affected the Cuban people. Since the year 1959 when Fidel Castro took over Cuba, the country has been under communist rule. It's been over 50 years since the United States placed and embargo against Cuba. The embargo also known as "the blockade" places travel restrictions and trade of commerce on any one who is under the US jurisdiction. One of the purposes of the embargo was to turn Cuba into a democratic country and to fight for human rights. Nothing has changed and now Cuba is blaming the U.S. for its chronic starvation and economic devastation. The U.S has had relations with Cuba since the Spanish–American war in 1898. Since Spain was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had harsh words for the U.S during his first trip out of Cuba. "Just like her, many others have died attempting to go to the United States. But it's the U.S. Government fault. Their unjust embargo provokes and internal and critical situation in Cuba" Gonzalez Said. Gonzalez was in Ecuador and was asked to speak at a conference for the World Festival and Youth of Students he said he wasn't too sure what his topic would be." My topic could range anywhere from lifting of the unjust blockade on Cuba the freedom of the 'Cuban Five'. The main reason we're here is because we want a revolutionary progressive movement that leads to socialism," he said. He is now a cadet in a military school and studying engineering. He is now and outspoken Castro supporter blaming the U.S. for Cuba's economic crisis. Like Elian's mother many people have died trying to come into the U.S. for a better life. There have been situation in which the Unites States government has tried to soften the embargo and the Cuban government has responded aggressively. Which makes us wonder was will happen if it was completely lifted. When President Jimmy Carter tried to normalize relations with Cuba, Castro responded by orchestrating the Mariel Boat lift in which 125,000 emigrants migrated to the U.S. which included prisoner and people who were mentally ill. • 9. Ehud Weapons Essay Did you know that swords were a major weapon of war during the ancient and medieval history? They are also called the gentleman of all weapons. They were bladed weapons that have two parts, namely the blade and the handle or the hilt. The blades were made of a hard metal, steel, or bronze. They were sharpened blades that could be single edged or double edged. The Israelites also used some traditional weapons. The story of Ehud, who plotted a daring one–man assassination attack on King Eglon of Moab, is told in (Judges 3:12–30). The standard sword of this period was curved, with one sharp edge used for slicing and slashing. It is sometimes called a sickle sword, and is the basis of the expression "smite the enemy with the edge of the sword" (see, for example, Judges 1:8, 25; 4:15; 18:27, KJV). "For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two–edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart". What is a" Two–Edged Sword"? From the Biblical point of view, on one end, the God Who saves and invites; the other edge is the God who exposes and judges. The Word of God is not simply a collection of Words from God; it is the force of His will and the gentleness of His rest and it is open for us to read and absorb. His word is the Bible and it is full of power; His Spirit lives in and within its precepts and pages. We have His Spirit, therefore we have become living Epistles. His Word is sharper than the sharpest knife or any instrument of war or cutlery. No tool of man can ever be as penetrating and as useful to open or to divide, display or to mend, to reveal, or to lead as His Word. His written principles will open us up. • 11. Donnie Moyer Character Analysis When it comes to small towns people who haven't lived in one tend to think that they are boring or bland. However a chat with some of the people who have always lived in a town of less than four– hundred people for their entire lives really paints a new picture. Donnie Moyer has lived outside of Terril, Iowa his entire life on a farm working for his father until his passing in which he took control of the property. When we discussed "How has the town change since you've lived here?" he responded with "It hasn't change at all it's still the same place I grew up in." Some see this as being bland but in today's age with all the technological change it is refreshing to see some are happy with their roots. Going on from that I asked him about his ... Mrs. Moyer responded with "You knew your neighbor, you could walk around town with no fear, and you watched out for your neighbors house if they were gone and everybody knew each other's kids." at this point in after her response it was clear that the sense of security was a large part that contributed to her decision to remain in this town after marrying Donnie but it begged the next question. "Why did you choose to raise your family in a small town?" to which she replied immediately to with "We already had family here and the community had become family as well." Now that may seem to be an easy answer to give but the sincerity in her voice spoke more than words ever could. We went on to discuss why she herself believed that most outsiders believe small towns are bland and boring to which she responded "Because to them there is no big nightlife scene. • 13. Essay On Medieval Weapons Weapons from the 1600's are not as advanced as the weapons are in today's modern time. These weapons that are involved are shields, bows, swords, and spears. Shields in today's time are more likely used by the department of justice which is the FBI and etc. Shields in the early European Middle Ages were round with non–splitting wood, they were usually made with leather covers on one or both sides of metal rims and a metal shield boss were typical. Spears could easily be hurled from a distance or used as a secondary killing tool to the sword. The long length of the spear usually made it uncomfortable for soldiers on foot but great for those that were on horseback who charge at their enemies to knock them off to the ground or to stab them on the ground. The use of these weapons and this armor made one soldier have more power than ten to fifteen regular soldiers. Throwing spears were rarely seen when the middle ages started to come around. The Corporate Tax Transparency Report Essay Introduction The Australian Taxation Office (Henceforth known as the ATO) released an inaugural corporate tax transparency report, showing the 579 local and foreign–based companies that paid no company tax in 2013–14 had combined turnover of $405.9 billion and taxable income of $4 billion. The report, which forms part of a global push for improved corporate transparency, provides a positive outlook into corporate transparency, although the critical issue of the minimal tax paid by large corporation's remains. This paper aims to analyse the ATO corporate tax transparency report for the 2013–14 income year to uncover and critique the appallingly low, or inexistent, tax paid by large corporations, especially those with international transactions. Initially, the ATO's corporate transparency report shall be outlined to corroborate the argument corporate tax paid is minimal. Furthermore, the amount of corporate tax paid outlined in the report shall be critiqued, with a focus on corporations with international transactions. As a final point, a number of recommendations shall be outlined concerning corporations paying their 'fair share' of tax. It shall be argued that corporate transparency is transitioning in the correct direction and should continue doing so, although reforms are necessary to ensure large corporations pay their 'fair share' of tax. The starting point for this argument is the aforementioned report. ATO Corporate Transparency Report The ATO has a legislative duty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Brief Look at a Legionnaire's Equipment A brief look at a legionnaire's equipment Very few empires throughout history have rivaled the resplendence and sheer size of the Roman Empire at its peak. The height of the empire was achieved in the year 117 ad with a size of 6.5 million sq. km. One of the defining factors that allowed the romans to have such successful conquests and to maintain such a large empire is the standardization of equipment that its troops had to abide by. The quality of the equipment was another factor that played a role in their success. Roman weaponry Each roman soldier was fitted with similar equipment, the primary weapon of each was their Gladius they also had a Pugio for their spare weapon. Depending on the era they would have had 6 plumbata's clipped to the inside of their shield or Pilum on their back for throwing. A Gladius is a short sword ranging from 50 to 60 cm long. Gladii were double edged with a sharp point for thrusting, making them very versatile weapons. Their hilts were composed of bone or hardwood usually and knobbed to increase the soldiers grip on the weapon. In combat soldiers primarily used their weapons for stabbing at stomach height, but could inflict grisly injury's as a slashing weapon as well. The Gladius was used for many years before finally being replaced towards the end of the Roman Empire by the Spatha. During the later years of the Roman Empire the Gladius was replaced with the Spatha. A Spatha measured .75 to 1m long which allowed for a longer reach for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. A Double Edged Sword Essay There is a growing awareness that addressing past injustices are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. While there is an agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many scholars debate about how such acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with human rights violations. Memorializing the past, through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can memorials provide, and how can they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these symbolic reparations to be a double–edged sword due to their strengths and weaknesses, it presents only a fraction of the process that needs to be fulfilled for redressing the losses that were suffered by the victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards achieving political reconciliation and re–establishing ... • 21. Social Privileges And Lack Thereof : The Double Edged... Social Privileges and Lack Thereof: the Double–edged Sword of Academia Privilege, when defined as having advantages or receiving special benefits that are available exclusively to a certain group or groups, is an extremely important social phenomena. At its most mild, experiencing any form of privilege segregates or categorizes individuals in the group receiving the benefits of that privilege from others who do not receive those same benefits. At its most extreme, experience of privilege, or equally significantly the lack of privilege, violently alienates groups of people, often in the form of cultural, political, social tensions. What are seen as social constructions such as race, ethnicity, gender, social class or status, religion, etc. can all be seen as mechanisms for becoming a recipient of or being denied social benefits. Social class or status achieved through financial and educational background is one of the many mechanisms of receiving privileged benefits that Zadie Smith writes of in her novel, On Beauty. Her character Zora Belsey's experience of financially secure social privilege creates for her a sense of entitlement and superiority. Even the commendable actions Zora takes in making higher education available for those who may not otherwise have access to it become fuel for her self fulfilling savior complex. Through her juxtaposition against Carl Thomas, an individual of lower social status than herself, Zora performs a near perfect display of how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the issues that come together with them still seem to plaque the community even after more than five decades. In retrospect, these issues are more protuberant in the implementation level than at the policy–making stage. The way Chua Beng Huat asserted in his paper titled Multiculturalism in Singapore: an instrument of social control, it seems as though multiculturalism and multiracialism are double–edged swords which can cut both ways. Comparing Romeo And Juliet And The Girl Who Fell From The Sky The Rose by Bette Midler relates to characters in the stories of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow which include Romeo Montague, and Rachel Morse by the love that they experience. Romeo portrays through the play that he needs love and will do anything to keep it with Juliet. Although Rachel has many bad relationships in the book, she learns that she can live independently and doesn't have to rely on a man. Both characters portray the cons and pros of love. Romeo longs for the tender love of Juliet. He goes great lengths in order to maintain his love. In the early acts of the play, Romeo is ecstatic about the qualities in Juliet. He never loses that, but he does learn that love is a double edged sword. Advancements in weapons caused for more gruesome and bloody war. The use of swords, spears, axes, and arrows caused for many fierce and bloody battles. Advancements in intelligence made for better tactics, strategies, travel and more importantly, more victories. The two types of warfare in medieval times were either a battle that was head to head, or, one of the scariest kinds, which has taken the lives of many and destroyed kingdoms (McDonald,2010). The most effective and deadly advancements were the ways of punishment for those who were caught or those who surrendered, whether it be imprisonment and torture, or immediate execution. Being a prisoner of war was not the spot any soldier wanted to be in. Medieval wars were very dangerous wars because there were not many of advancements in health back then, so fatal wounds meant certain death most of the time(McDonald, 2010) There are many ways that kingdoms defended themselves with things like moats, bridges, walls (Morris & Exploring–Castles, n.d.). Luckily for the attackers, there are ways to get pass defences, such as battering rams for heavy doors. Also, mining was used to go under a defensive wall. • 33. Nostalgia In London 1802 Diction Similar in theme to Wordsworth's "London, 1802" is Percy Shelley's poem "England in 1819". Looking at Shelley's poem in terms of historical context and nostalgia allows the political sonnet to be read as a piece of restorative nostalgia for the targeted reading audience of this works time period. This sonnet is written in iambic pentameter however the rhyme scheme of this sonnet differs from the scheme of a traditional English sonnet. The rhyme scheme within this poem follows ABABAB,CDCD,CCDD. Connecting this structure to the concept of nostalgia allows for the "a–b" section to be viewed as "reflective nostalgia". The "a–b" section strays from the form of a traditional sonnet and repeats itself, this repetition mimics the act of "longing" as the section goes back to the same rhyme scheme. Looking at the first six lines, the speaker emphatically describes the horrors and hardships of England's government and the life of the proletariat. The act of dwelling on the current state of England demonstrates reflective nostalgia and forces the reader to reflect on the state of England before these changes took place. For the intended reading audience of this poem this work would call attention to the changes of society and manipulate time forcing the reading to imagine the past of England and look forward in fear to the future as "reflective nostalgia does not follow a single plot but explores ways of inhabiting many places at once and imagining different time zones" (Boym 4). As the first six lines repeat themselves in rhyme scheme outside of the traditional sonnet structure, this connects to the idea of reflective nostalgia in mimicking reflective nostalgia fear of "returning to current states" (Boym 4). This section, evoking reflective nostalgia in the poems intended reading audience acts as a radical political stance against the King, Capitalism and state of the Church. In dwelling on the changes and corruption in society, this section uses reflective nostalgia to "cherise shattered fragments of memory and demoralizes space" (Boym 5). The fragments of "cherished memory" is England before the ongoing wars stemmed from the revolutions, the "demoralized space" comes from the manipulation of time that nostalgia causes ... Argumentative Essay: Banning The Box The pursuit of economic and employment equality should be the right of all; however, it is unfortunate that those with criminal histories are often deprived of this. The question of disclosure or banning the box is a dual edged sword by which many convicted individuals continue to suffer from. As discussed by Kevin Hyde in the video Ban The Box, many of the jobs that exclude persons with criminal backgrounds have little or nothing to do with the job being performed and that a key to reduction in crime is the employment of those individuals who are qualified to perform the tasks (Ban The Box –TedxJacksonville, 2015). Banning the box in theory from the community corrections side offers several promising benefits. Today, I want to speak about how I presented the statement, 'Intelligence is a double–edged sword' in my novel, Flowers for Algernon. If you have not read the novel, it is about an intellectually disabled young man named Charlie Gordon, in his thirties, who is presented with the opportunity to greatly increase his intelligence through a surgical procedure. His gradual intelligence causes him to realise certain matters in his life, both in the past and present, which he was oblivious to before the surgery. What he starts to realise because of his increasing intelligence affects him for the better and worse. I will speak about some positive and negative side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His awareness of how things really are, causes others to draw away from Charlie and Charlie to draw away from others. Pre–surgery, Charlie links intelligence to a talking point, leading to more friends. His intelligence has the opposite effect that he imagines. He states at the beginning, "I hope I get smart soon because I want to lern everything there is in the werld like the collidge boys know...about art and politiks and god." (p15) However when he's at a high stage intelligence, he views these activities as 'childish', providing 'no pleasure' and 'elementary'. As his intelligence increases, he falls out of touch with his few friends at the bakery. He feels that he causes them to 'shrink and emphasize their inadequacies.' (p.74) Charlie writes, 'I have betrayed them and they hated me for that'. From his colleague's viewpoint, Charlie's spontaneous intelligence is something 'forbidden' and portrays them as 'a bunch of dopes'. (p.75) His rapidly growing intelligence eventually surpasses that of professors, scientists and doctors, including Dr. Strauss, Burt, and Professor Nemur, who designed and performed his surgery. With no one to relate or compete with intellectually, Charlie grows critical and uncompassionate. Charlie's attitude causes Alice Kinnian to angrily remark, "You're different. You've changed. And I'm not talking about your IQ It's your attitude toward people." (p85) This change of attitude is evident when Charlie describes Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur as 'frauds', 'phonies' and 'ordinary men working beyond their abilities', descriptions all contrasting with how he originally viewed them. (p105,108) Although he strives to 'guard against the natural tendency to look down them', Charlie continues with his uncaring attitude towards those below him. The only difference is that the predators are other humans. Yet much of the times, this is not the kind of stress that seems to be the most detrimental to our health. The top ten stressors in life are (1).: 1. Death of a spouse 2. Divorce 3. Marital separation 4. Jail term 5. Death of close family member 6. Personal injury or illness 7. Marriage 8. With change, comes the need to deal with what was once familiar but not anymore, the need to adapt. Sadly, people tend to dwell on the change, regret events to lead to it or worry if more change might be in store for the future. This kind of thinking can lead to overstressing and health problems. With the stress that comes with everyday life, having a mindset that brings about more stress is even more detrimental. Although, what the terrorist are really are killing people and forcing innocent people to group suicide with them, when their title change some of the audiences will easily justify the terrorists' behaviors. There's another example of doublespeak's dishonesty; when a person with money and authority, for example, the Prime Minister, force a regular citizen by treated them. It would sound very bad when a people says that the Prime Minister threated a citizen, but it will sound nothing if people says that the Prime Minister made a deal with the regular citizen, and in most case it this really happened the journalist would use doublespeak and change threat to deal or some positive words. • 45. Analysis Of Plautus 's Comedies Seem Be A Double Edged Sword Plautus's comedies seem to be a double edged sword. One edge makes an audience laugh while the other is embedded with hidden messages. A Roman audience watching The Brothers Menaechmus might even laugh at a cleverly concealed insult. Plautus, a Roman playwright, managed to create this double tasking play by using a setting which down played the stereotypical Greek setting of Athens, and opted instead for something a little less Greek. The setting also played a part in creating a link between brother and culture. The main setting allowed Menaechmus I to symbolize the Greek persona while the sub setting correlated Menaechmus II with the Romans. While this song, void of virtue, might amuse a Roman audience, it would nonetheless prove to be ironic because the system of clients and patrons is a Roman tradition. Underneath that entertaining melody is an elusive criticism to a Roman tradition. Underneath that joyful tune is an insult to the Romans, where they are called both greedy and dishonest. Consequently, Plautus gets away with this by embedding it into a song that might otherwise be overlooked as nothing more than a device to amuse the audience. Plautus does not only shroud commentary with melodies but within the characters as well. He does this by almost making the play an allegory. Menaechmus I, because he was kidnapped as a child and lived most of his life in Epidamnus, a Greek setting, he affiliates with the Greek persona. On the other hand, because Menaechmus II spent most of his life in Sicily, an acquired Roman territory, he is the symbol for the Romans. Having discriminating taste is a good thing, liking things indiscriminately is not. You should be able to decide which type of art you enjoy, what type of food, or music, but you should not be indiscriminate when sharing your thoughts online. The latter only opens you up to ridicule. We are all discriminated against constantly, in every way, every day, by sex, height and weight, color, religion and so many other things that are unconsciously noticed. The question is; when is discrimination bad, or even immoral, and how do we combat that? As the youngest of six children, I have seen many friends of my family come and go through the years. Three examples of discrimination stick out in my mind. My sister had a very close friend through high school choir who was gay. He was just sixteen when he became close with my family and in the early stages of coming to grips with his sexuality. His parents and brother would not accept his decision. Other students from school would exclude him from activities because they, too, were brainwashed by their elders. After months passed by and his parents realized this wasn't just a "phase he was going through," they decided to get the church involved and perform a "gay exorcism." • 57. How Did King David Have Bladed Weapons Did you know that swords were a major weapon of war during the ancient and medieval history? They are also called the gentleman of all weapons. They were bladed weapons that have two parts namely the blade and the handle or the hilt. Blades were made of a hard metal, steel, or bronze. They could be one handed or double as per the weight and maneuver of the sword. The hilt could be wood, leather, ivory or bone. The warriors and the knights relied on swords a lot. They were brisk, agile, graceful and flexible. Some were very elaborately decorated. What type of sword did King David use to cut off Goliath's head? No one knows, however, the bible says "King David ran and took Goliath's sword and cut off his head". King David did not have a sword in his hand; therefore God had to provide a sword for David because David had spoken the words. The opportunities to create something new and inventive is endless. It only takes one imaginative idea and this fascinating tool can make it become a reality. This new piece of technology can have an impact not only in the United States, but also globally in a variety of aspects, many being highly beneficial, but others that bring ethical and harmful concerns to the equation that could cause 3D printing to take a turn for the worse. With today's society many environmentalists are continuing their efforts to develop new ways to help improve and maintain our environment. 3D printing has recently shown its work in creating an environmentally friendly bathing suit that can eliminate water pollution. You heard it right, engineers from the University of California, Riverside and designers from an architecture firm located in New York City created a bikini that can absorb unwanted contaminants while the person swims (Newbern). What is this suit made of? It is a netlike structure consisting of synthetic rubber and a material called sponge. • 63. Medical Advancement Of A Double Edged Sword "To Live On", a 2005 art installation composed of roses and infusion bags by Min Jeong Seo, elegantly captures the idea of medical advancement of a double edged sword. Seo's art piece involves fifty long stemmed roses, eerily suspended with the blooms perfectly preserved in infusion bags, while the stems hang freely, drying and decaying at their own pace. It's an apt visual metaphor that showcases the good and bad consequences of constant medical research and development, one that addresses the concepts of "playing God" and where quality of life gives way to mere extension of it. While scientific progress has given society increasingly effective therapies and has allowed us to extend our collective life span, it has also led us into increasingly woolly territory where we must consider if genetically typing fetuses, blanket prescription writing or a systematic emphasis on tertiary care is compatible with a higher quality of life than if our bodies were left to their own devices. Unpacking these issues requires a degree of separation away from the medical field and the patients, practitioners and occasional overcommitment to scientific dogma that introduces biases and cloudy judgement into the question of how society should use its technology. This core tension has always fascinated me and has inspired me to constantly ask if the newest discovery is actually the best, or if a simpler, more effective solution already exists and someone just hasn't figured out how to apply it. ... • 65. The Double Edged Sword : Myth And Reality Essay The Double–Edged Sword: Myth and Reality The chapter titled "Myth Today" found in Roland Barthes progressive book, Mythologies attempts to analyze the notion of a myth within material culture while reinforcing the idea of semiotics and unveiling the system behind it. Myth, for most people, is considered a kind of story or tale of history that might have some truth to it. When thinking of myth, we may recall tales of Hercules and Oedipus as well as cultural or religious phenomena such as the rebirth of Christ. Barthes has a new definition of myth, and that it is a mode of communication where what is said is not more important than how it is said. To review the text, I will first outline Barthes main arguments and then identify his approaches to the unveiling of myth. I will then use his processes and apply them to Rene Magritte's La Grand Famille. Barthes begins the chapter by stating says the ways in which myth can be communicated, they are diverse and are not limited to writing and imagery. All the mediums will eventually get expressed in the same way. In the essay, Barthes claims that myth is not a language and instead, it transforms meaning into form. The study of how it does this is classified as semiology. Semiology is an idea that was founded by Ferdinand de Saussure, who's work Barthes read before writing this book. Semiology is the science of forms and their significance aside from the content. Myth forms part of this system that connects the signified to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Three G's Motives During the age of exploration many interesting events occurred. Some were good and quite a couple was bad. This was because of one motive known as God, Gold, and Glory. It was because of this motive why colonization had terrible effects also. In the Age of Exploration, the three G's turned out to be a double edged sword that greatly effected this era. First, exploration was not really a big deal until a simple motive was born. This simple motive was again called God, Gold, and Glory or the three G's for short. The three G's sparked in their own way. For "God", religion was very popular and Europeans wanted to spread Christianity, for "Gold", they had their eyes set on wealth and riches that they had to go for it, and for "Glory", it was the ... • 69. Viking Battle Tactics Viking battle tactics and weaponry continues to impact our world today. From the unique technique that the Viking performs in battle to the powerful weapons used. The Vikings were the first and probably the last to introduce their unique battle tactic. Which is that they had no professional standing army and did not fight regular formations (Viking Weapons and Warfare). The formation was to charge towards their enemies all at once, catching their enemies off guard and giving the Vikings the advantage of the upper hand. They were able to win battles with the formation due to the loyalty bond between the Viking men and women with their lords (Viking Weapons and Warfare). Another unique battle tactic the Vikings introduced was the spread and lay their weapons in the surrounding area where the battle takes place beforehand, just in case the formation were to backfire (VIKINGS MILITARY TACTICS AND FORTIFICATIONS). This tactic was also an advantage if the enemies were to attack first, they would get injured first before the Vikings can attack. The development of weapons that ... • 71. Lessons Can Be A Double Edged Sword Humans often can only see what is immediately before them. When we see fallen brethren, we either judge, or pity, the individual, yet in both cases there is often a lack of contemplation on this individual's background. Despite many of us being raised on strong, and arguably, quite often religious morals, such as "never judge thy neighbor," real–world experience dictates us to do just that. We can be subconsciously critical when listening to someone else's woes, before ever truly placing ourselves in their predicament. And vice versa, we can sometimes be just as supportive towards false prophets and achievers, regardless if we understand the full amount of blood which stains their concealed hands. Learning lessons can be a double–edged sword, when those lessons are being taught in the same time period which we exist. For us being creatures quite knowledgeable of the immediate world around us, being familiar with current customs, and trends, we can easily decipher if an act of justice is just that, or if it is merely common action, perhaps fueled by more malicious reasoning. When we explore tales from the past, we may not be quite as keen to the society which these tales had taken place in, and therefore, we will focus our analyzation on the meat of the meal, i.e., the morals within the story. Not knowing the exact customary traditions during the timelines of these stories can be quite beneficial, for this ignorance of the past world can make us nod in awe at the nobleness ... • 73. The World Wide Web The World Wide Web, propelled by various social media programs like Twitter, FaceBook and Instagram, has become a double–edged sword in the era of Web 2.0. This double–edged sword can be symbolized by SENDERS of information, and RECEIVERS of information. In its early days, the primary use of the WWW was searching for information, on static 'pages', to fulfill a particular need or request. Maps, phone numbers, product information, and the like, were available to anyone who searched for it. The WWW was a functional, up–to–date encyclopedia of information, available with the stroke of a keyboard, at the sender's request. During this time, search devices like Navigator, Google, Yahoo and their many imitators, worked by allowing one person (the sender) to find information about a multitude (the receivers). Hence the origin of the company's name synonymous with the Internet, Google. Send a request; Google will find an answer. It will even tell you how long it took to answer the question! In a real sense, the days of the early WWW could be characterized as follows: Go on the Internet, and find what you are looking for. In split second time. Today, in the era of Web 2.0, the many forms of social media programs have caused a distinct reversal in the most basic operation of the WWW. The roles of sender and receiver have been reversed. The sender is now the collector of information, gathered from data, from cookies, for sale to anyone willing to pay the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
