Scientific Literacy
Important?
We think so.
Why?
Well, there are lots of reasons why and of course controversy
swirls around various aspects of science and whether or not
certain science should even be done.
In order to better grasp the complexities and to frame informed
opinions about topics ranging from global warming to
biogenetics, I believe we need to become scientifically literate.

Scientific Literacy
Only 28 percent of American adults qualify as being scientifically
literate.
Adequate or not?
Given the rapid changes in science and advances in the resulting
technology, we need to do better.
Robert Hazen outlines why we should care about being scientifically
literate:
"Why Should You Be Scientifically
Literate?" http://www.actionbioscience.org/newfrontiers/hazen.html.

Here's another test maker factoid for you to chew on -- these

University of Michigan professor Jon Miller is quoted in Science
Daily article, 'Scientific Literacy: How Do Americans Stack Up?'
“A slightly higher proportion of American adults qualify as scientifically
literate as European or Japanese adults, but the truth is that no major
industrial nation in the world today has a sufficient number of
scientifically literate adults,"
he said.
"We should take no pride in a finding that 70 percent of Americans
cannot read and understand the science section of the New York Times."
