THE MELONI
GOVERNMENT
November 2022
THE ELECTIONS
On 25 September 2022 Italians voted for a
new Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
For the very first time, even 18-year-olds
could vote for the Senate (Constitutional
Law n. 1/2021 lowering the voting age from
25 to 18 in Senate elections).
The centre-right coalition won with an
absolute majority in both Houses.
Brothers of Italy, led by Giorgia Meloni,
came out ahead with 26% of the votes.
THE MELONI GOVERNMENT
President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella
began talks to form a new government and
the following day appointed Giorgia Meloni
as Prime Minister.

20 OCTOBER
25 OCTOBER
Meloni and her ministers were sworn in
before the President of the Republic.
The new government won the vote of
confidence in the Chamber of Deputies with
a large majority (235 in favour, 154 against,
5 abstained) and the next day in the Senate
(115 in favour, 79 against and 5 abstained).
WHO ARE THE NEW MINISTERS?
There are 25 new Ministers: 10

the League, 5 from Forza Italia
and 5 ‘technocrats’
Many of them, including
Prime Minister Meloni, have
already held government
office or have experience in
Parliament. An experience that,
in some ways, is reflected in
the average age of the new
government: 60 years old.
This is the first time in
Italian history that a woman
has been the Head of the
Government.
However, in the new
executive, only 7 out of 25
ministers are women.

THE MELONI GOVERNMENT

  • 2. THE ELECTIONS On 25 September 2022 Italians voted for a new Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. For the very first time, even 18-year-olds could vote for the Senate (Constitutional Law n. 1/2021 lowering the voting age from 25 to 18 in Senate elections). The centre-right coalition won with an absolute majority in both Houses. Brothers of Italy, led by Giorgia Meloni, came out ahead with 26% of the votes.
  • 3. THE MELONI GOVERNMENT President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella began talks to form a new government and the following day appointed Giorgia Meloni as Prime Minister. 22 OCTOBER 20 OCTOBER 25 OCTOBER Meloni and her ministers were sworn in before the President of the Republic.
