LITERATURE:
Schwarz, 446d
The original edition of Sweethearts by Emmett Williams issued by Edition Hansjorg Mayer in 1967 had only minimal black
titles on white wrappers. When the Something Else Press edition was being prepared later that same year, Dick Higgins and
Alison Knowles wanted Duchamp’s 1936 Couers Volants for the cover art and enlisted the help of SEP authors/artists/friends
Daniel Spoerri, John Cage and/or Richard Hamilton to contact Marcel Duchamp. Duchamp agreed and Knowles set upon
getting the noted artist to sign off on color combinations at his (and Teeny’s) 10th Street apartment in New York. While the
work is dated 1967 by SEP, Duchamp signed it in 1968 and this indelible Op Art image of a pulsating heart became known
as the last graphic work of his oeuvre as well as one of the rarest SEP items and Duchamp prints as well.
Estimate: $40,000-$60,000
