As a member of Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) Leaders Engaging in Advance
Discoveries (LEAD), were are expected to complete eighty hours of service over the course of two
academic school years. Each semester VCU LEAD students are required to complete twenty hours
of service, ten–community engagement hours and ten leadership hours. I believe that having a
requirement of participation hours pushes students to get involved on VCU's campus and the greater

During the two years I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, I passed by Monticello everyday on my
way from home to school; I finally went up there to visit right before I left the town. Weaving
through the giant plantation around it, the shuttle took us from the foot of the mountain to the
hilltop, where the house rested. The house was relatively small compared to the size of the field
surrounding it. Through several preservation and minor renovation, the floor we stepped on was still
the original. I remembered walking under the house and circling back through all the servants'

Located in the Quad, standing tall is a building that represents critical and memorable moments in
history. The University of Alabama is home to the beautiful Amelia Gorgas Library. This is where
students can go study, relax, eat, check out books, and socialize. The library was built in 1939 and is
located at the site of the first original library on campus. During the Civil War the original building
was known as the Rotunda. It was a military school for the confederate army. In 1865 Rotunda was
burned down by troops sent to destroy the educational buildings on campus. In its place Gorgas

Out of all the places to study and do homework here at Alabama, Gorgas is by far my favorite. I
have yet to experience any ghostly encounters but if I keep going there enough hopefully I will have
some of my own stories to tell one day. Being the most eye catching building on campus Gorgas is
hard to miss and hard to forget. Its massive structure is supported out front by eight large concreate
pillars. The pillars are carved top to bottom with detail and complete the overall look of the building.

My Duty For Volunteering At Virginia Commonwealth...
Over the course of a month, I dedicated time to volunteer with agencies that focus on providing safe
and productive programs for children. Stop Child Abuse Now also known as SCAN, focuses on
stopping/preventing child abuse in homes. This agency teams with many different agencies around
Richmond to help parents and children coop and learn way to avoid situations of abuse. My duty for
volunteering was teaming with Virginia Commonwealth University Health Services and making
SCAN a known organization throughout Richmond community. VCU threw a wellness block party
that included many different health services but also gave members of the community to learn and
seek help with many different organizations that were there promoting their business or
organization. I sat with one other girl and passed out flyers and contact information to those who
were interested in the organizations. I explained to individuals what the program was about and the
benefits of the program. I had one particular interaction with this young mother who explained she
was in a situation where children were being abused and the authorities were notified and now she's
seeking counseling for her and the children involved. I and the other young lady volunteering with
me were able to give her information on the program and also contact numbers to individuals that
