Senior Year Of High School
Senior year of high school, while filled with excitement and anticipation, can be a stressful time for
those applying to college. Deciding on a college is not like buying a new pair of shoes; shoes can be
bought, taken home, and, if necessary, returned for something else. In this respect, colleges are not
so forgiving. While the option to transfer exists in theory, the expense of transferring and the
complicated logistics of transferring from one university to another leave students with limited
options. High school seniors applying to colleges must think carefully about where they will be for
the next four years. There are countless factors that each must consider in evaluating a prospective
college, but each school's academics and social life are two important factors that must be
considered paramount. The University of Virginia (UVA) is one institution that offers top tier
academics and a vibrant social scene.
Academics are no doubt a major consideration when weighing universities; UVA is nationally
recognized for its academics, and it has long been competitive as the premier university in public
higher education. Any accredited university can award a degree, with varying levels of prestige to be
sure, but perhaps most pertinent in evaluating a college is the quality of the education it has to offer.
UVA has long been committed to investing in the quality of its academics. Professors at major
universities are notorious for caring almost exclusively about their research and academic prestige,
but at UVA, while undoubtedly committed to publishing first–rate research, professors are viewed as
mentors. The value of this academic relationship cannot be overstated; PhDs guarantee intellectual
brilliance, but they do not always translate into "good" professors. Professors at UVA regularly
undergo formal instruction on pedagogy, meaning they receive formal training to ensure that each
professor is teaching for the sake of learning and not just lecturing for the sake of fulfilling a job
requirement. Not to be overlooked are the various study abroad opportunities that UVA has to offer.
In today's global economy, study abroad opportunities offer unbeatable, invaluable experience. The
UVA Class of 2017 had 1,378

Classical Architecture: Maison Carrée, Pantheon
Throughout history, great leaders have used the power of architecture to convey the fundamental
ideas that formed the base of their societies. Immense amounts of money, power and time have been
poured into monumental buildings over the centuries; testament to the importance humanity places
on grand symbols. Classical architecture is some of the most timeless and long lasting architecture
the world has ever seen. It has been the inspiration of thousands of buildings, long after the original
creators and civilizations passed..The practice of using classical architecture to reference the values
that classical architects used their buildings to represent several hundreds of years before was first
practiced by leaders such as the monarchy of Great Britain. At the height of their empire they
borrowed symbols from the emperors of ancient Rome; symbols to represent the glory of an
Imperial hand stretching over a collection of colonies. A contrasting example is Thomas Jefferson,
an aspiring architect who not only designed buildings for the new America, but the American
democracy with it. His architecture was representative of a collection of intellectual individuals
working together to create a just system of government. The classical buildings that symbolize these
styles of architecture, linked by the similar architectural features, are the Maison Carrée, Pantheon
and the Parthenon. Features that make the Maison Carrée distinctive include a deep portico, a
hexastyle design on

Virginia Commonwealth University Personal Statement
It was dark and there were so many noises around me as I slowly woke up and recalled I was in a
hospital with abdominal pain. I then heard a familiar voice say "Sweetie, wake up! Wake up!" I
opened my eyes to a blurry image of my mother. "Shhh... don't make any noises. We're leaving now.
Just act like you are fine. We'll try to sneak out before anyone notices", my mother said. She
explained later that she could not afford to pay hospital bills, so we had to leave before any
physician checked over. Living in Vietnam, I was filled with resentment towards their healthcare
system, as people were rejected treatment and left to perish in the streets. As a child, I therefore
never considered medicine as a career. My spark for medicine was unforeseen until I went on a high
school field trip at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. Hovering over the glass ceiling of the
operating theater, I watched doctors performing coronary bypass surgery while witnessing the heart
beat stronger and stronger. At this magical moment, I was overwhelmed by the power of medicine to
save people's lives. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a first generation student, I initially had academic difficulties, as I did not know how to use all

My Experience At The Jefferson Scholarship Essay
I believe that my academic strengths, leadership ability, and appreciation of those who are different
from me make me a great candidate for the Jefferson scholarship. I've demonstrated unusual
academic ability since elementary school. During my time at River Oaks Elementary, an
International Baccalaureate school, I enjoyed and excelled in the Gifted and Talented program. My
second–grade teacher told my parents at the end of the year that in his opinion I already knew all the
material that I would learn in third grade. Therefore, he recommended that I skip the grade entirely.
Although my parents didn't let me skip third grade, I continued to challenge myself. I asked for extra
homework and devoured half the books in the library in my spare time. My wonderful teachers let
me work at an accelerated pace and gave me higher level problems to keep me interested and
enthusiastic about school. Similarly, my eighth–grade Spanish teacher strongly recommended that I
skip Spanish II and head straight to Spanish III my freshman year. This time, I was old enough to
express my desire to accelerate my learning; I urged my parents to let me skip the class and
reassured them that I wouldn't be too overwhelmed. They trusted my judgement, and I'm so thankful
that I made this decision. I borrowed my teacher's book over the summer and pored over it for an
hour every day until I was confident in my abilities. It was intimidating walking into the
sophomore– and junior–filled class on that first

Personal Narrative Essay : My Journey To Graduate College
Looking out into the crowd, I saw my mother and grandmother with proud smiling faces and tears
running down their cheeks. This was the moment they had been imagining, and the moment I had
been pushing myself to attain over the last four years at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
As the announcer said my name on the hot summer day in June, I walked to the podium and
accepted my diploma. I gave a giant smile to the audience and a nod towards my family, thanking
them for their love and support, giving credit to those who had helped me along my journey to
graduation. This was by far the most meaning moment of my life because of the struggles I endured,
and the journey I had taken to achieve my success. I will never forget that moment and my personal
quest to graduate college.
All my life I wanted to be a college graduate so that I could succeed in my life. I had wanted to
achieve my vision with hard work how my parents had. They influenced me during my upbringing
to never give up on my dreams, and with hard work, I can have any career I chose. My goal was to
graduate college with a Biology degree and to pursue a career in Medicine, one that I looked
forward to throughout my high school years. However, achieving this goal was far more difficult
than I imagined it would be and I experienced several obstacles and setbacks that have been difficult
to overcome but have given me valuable life experiences. My journey began after high school when

Obstacles In Thomas Jefferson's Life
Thomas Jefferson was a known and accomplished man during his entire life. He was born on April
13, 1743, in a town located just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia and had died July 4, 1743.
Jefferson was tall, red haired with many freckles, and wasn't considered very attractive. In his early
life he worked hard for what he wanted passing many obstacles. Jefferson was a poor public
speaker, but oddly became a very accomplished lawyer. Jefferson had many roles to play in the
government. He was the nation's first secretary of state, second vice president, the third president of
the United States and one of the people known for the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson also had a big
name as the author of the American of Independence.

progressed along with the revolutionary war into the south, Jefferson had an idea of moving the
capital to Richmond. When moving the capital they were forced to leave because that ended up
being the target of the British attack. Just days before the end of his career as governor, Jefferson
was forced to leave his house to avoid a capture from British cavalry. As this was taking place
Jefferson had stated, "When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public

Ag Class Research Paper
All people at Carroll County Middle School enjoy fun activities and classes. In ag class you will get
to build, weld, and learn about farming. There is only one awful thing about ag class which is you
have to be chosen. Ag class is certainly fun and all the kids at Carroll County Middle School enjoy
ag class. One idea to do in ag class is build hands on projects. I think building is fun and can help
you with life. In ag class whatever you build you get to keep and take home with you. You also learn
how to build and weld which is important if you want to be a carpenter. Some of the kids do not
finish their projects and they have to take home an unfinished project. If you do not know anything
about building you will learn quick. Building hands on projects is wonderful because kids at school
have more than likely not had an experience like that in their life. Parents will be very proud of their
child if they finish the project because they will want to brag and show their friends what their child

A Birth Of A Legend
It was a birth of a legend; it did not start with "once up one a time" because the story was not a
fiction, but the man himself was like a fictional hero. Father of a nation. James Madison born in Port

twelve kids, and only seven of them could made through adulthood. His father was a tobacco planter
having more than 4,000–acre land and many slaves. Life was not generous and compassionate when
it came to his health and childhood. As an infant, he had a worried looking face. According to Miller

epileptic fits, that plagued him on and off throughout his youth." His childhood fear was a possible

Ash Lawn-Highland Research Paper
Ash Lawn–Highland is the home of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and its
located on the outskirts of Charlottesville in Albemarle, Virginia. Originally, owned by Champe
Carter, Ash Lawn–Highland was a part of a much larger estate known as the Blenheim. This
changed in 1793 when James Monroe purchased the land from Carter for 1,000 pounds. After
several delays, Monroe, and his family moved to the Highland in 1799, where they would stay until
1825. The Highland, as Monroe and his family called it, was a working plantation that consisted of

The House
During the two years I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, I passed by Monticello everyday on my
way from home to school; I finally went up there to visit right before I left the town. Weaving
through the giant plantation around it, the shuttle took us from the foot of the mountain to the
hilltop, where the house rested. The house was relatively small compared to the size of the field
surrounding it. Through several preservation and minor renovation, the floor we stepped on was still
the original. I remembered walking under the house and circling back through all the servants'
facilities. All the dependencies were built into the side of the mountain in a U shape. (Figure 6 &7)
As for the main house for Jefferson and his family, the plan of the house showed that several rooms,
especially the parlor, were hexagons, for maximizing daylight in the house, which followed the
"rounded world" concept in the Pantheon. Also related to this sense, the "front" of the house were
never defined. "As in Jefferson 's day, visitors today enter through the columned portico of the East
Front into the Entrance Hall." West entrance is more private use for family and guests. But despite
the function of the two entrance, there was no clear frontality or a single façade that dominated the
house. "Rounded world" represented Jefferson's vision of the world. Tracing back to his early life,
he was well–known as the third president of America. Yet in his legendary life, he only put "Author

Money Can Be Seen As A Root Of Evil
Money can presumably be seen as a root of evil. Greed can consume a human's moral to the point of
pure corruption. Thomas Jefferson remains an icon in American history, despite the travesties he
attributed to involving slavery. Jefferson once preached equality until he got a taste of the lavish life.
Upon the inheritance of slaves, Jefferson receives a first–hand experience of the luxury of being a
slave owner. Jefferson utilizes slaves to achieve economic success without regard to the suffering
accompanied with the gruesome work. With his multitude of slaves Jefferson gains riches through
agriculture and industry, but his excessive spending to acquire a lavish life drain him economically.
Jefferson's plantation, Monticello, is famous for not only the beautiful landscape and architecture,
but his plantation crops run by slaves. Crops were a large portion of profits at Monticello. The main
crops are tobacco and grains because of the high price of tobacco and the necessity of grains.
Monticello also grew hemp and cotton both for sale and to produce clothing in the textile shop.
Grains required less labor but greater organization, and skill was essential for their success.
Jefferson had 105 slaves to ensure the wheat crops ' success. Jefferson faces a decline in tobacco
crops because the crop itself is extremely damaging to the soil. When the tobacco crops caused too
much damage he focuses solely on grains. Jefferson often bought seed for cotton and left the slaves

Modern Sensibility In The Tempest By William Shakespeare
Many people argue that among the many literary works composed by William Shakespeare the
tempest treats issues that revolve around reconciliation, forgiveness, and faith in the future
generation. Making use of character Prospero, the Author was able to develop the major themes of
the play that in broader context overthrow the Great chain of being and adopt a modern sensibility.
To be in a position of exposing how Shakespeare addresses the mentioned theme, a consideration of
a thesis statement that attitudes and actions of the main characters in play define the implication a
play has on society. To facilitate an extrapolation of the thesis in consideration, I will first explain
what is meant by the modern sensibility. In connection with artistic or social activities, modern
sensibility refers to an understanding or the ability to decide what is useful and valuable. In a social
setting application, modern sensibility is a way of understanding things to the social ideals of an
earlier age. Making use of character Prospero, the author shows how the ideologies of an individual
assume a different direction after suffering some of the transformation in the society. As the play
kicks off, Prospero's conduct displays a contradiction from the basic tenets of Christian forgiveness.
Depending on his good fortune, the character seizes the opportunity to take vengeance of his enemy.
The passage that presents the central focus of the book is one that "Prospero hopes that his plan to

Monticello: Jefferson’s Dream Essay
Monticello: Jefferson's Dream
"Monticello", the Italian word for little mountain is the appropriate wording for Thomas Jefferson's
dream home. He picked out the site for such a fabled home as a young boy. At eight hundred and
sixty–five feet tall, Jefferson truly does have his little mountain on which to live. Thomas Jefferson
built his chalet in an abnormal spot in accordance with the times. Most if not all the people in the
seventeen hundreds built their homes in the low lands or near rivers. On the contrary Thomas
Jefferson was an abnormal man as that he was a statesman, a designer, a scholar, a astronomer, a

Jefferson is the first American who has consulted the fine arts to know how he should shelter
himself from the weather. Not only was Jefferson the architect but in many cases, he was the general
contractor.
He was surely a tradesman too as in he taught his slaves and free men bricklaying, stonecutting,
carpentry, cabinetmaking, and ironmongering. Jefferson's genius is easily seen and should be
researched and studied.
Jefferson was also the second vice president and the third president of the United States of America.
There is a history in the United States of holding whatever the Presidents have and do as national
treasures. This includes the building in which they were born, grew up in, lived in, and died in. It
seems that the popularity and success of the President is also a variable in the public's eye. Under
this assumption, Monticello would also be studied since it is the place where one of the greatest
Presidents of all time lived and died.
Monticello is considered one of the greatest architectural feats for the time in which it was built.
Thomas Jefferson built a home that was years beyond its time. He included sunlights to let in the
sun for extra lighting. Jefferson also was one of the first people to go away from the block style
building with a hall down the middle and rooms off to the left and right. He created a central room

Out of all the places to study and do homework here at Alabama, Gorgas is by far my favorite. I
have yet to experience any ghostly encounters but if I keep going there enough hopefully I will have
some of my own stories to tell one day. Being the most eye catching building on campus Gorgas is
hard to miss and hard to forget. Its massive structure is supported out front by eight large concreate
pillars. The pillars are carved top to bottom with detail and complete the overall look of the building.
The main entrance of the building faces the center of the quad. The concrete steps leading up to the
front doors are often filled with students sitting out enjoying the beautiful Alabama sun, and doing
homework or waiting to meet up with friends. All the students at the university love Gorgas and it is
most definitely being used to its full potential. Amelia Gorgas would be so proud to see what has
come of her library today and would be honored to see what success and joy it brings to myself and

Christian University Tuition
Texas Christian University is a private institution located in one of the nation's largest metroplexes.
Like many other privately funded universities, it has succumbed to one of the most concerning
issues for millennials and their parents today: increasing tuition annually leading to the overall
problem of student debt sweeping the country. Since 2010, tuition has increased by $12,580 for
TCU students, creating an increasingly large burden for students who value a small–knit community
at a university where professors know your name and you have a personal identity and not just an ID
number. It's important for Chancellor Boschini and the TCU Office of Finance and Administration to
hear the worries of students and their parents, and to consider ... Show more content on

Tuition rose by 4.8 percent, increasing it from $40,680 to $42,580 per year without room and board
(Watson). This tuition increase may seem like a small amount in the grand scheme of things;
however, for many students that is monstrous jump in price. For many students, that rise in tuition
may be the deciding factor between returning to TCU or transferring to a university with a smaller
impact on their wallets. While the tuition increase is a turnoff for current students at TCU, it has not
proven to affect retention rate, which is 91 percent. (TCU Financial Aid). Although TCU has a good
retention rate, it is coming from a specific group of people, with 77 percent of our student body
being white and from the upper–middle class who are able to afford the tuition of a private
university. This has a negative effect on the diversity at TCU, culturally and racially, which could be
considered a turnoff to some potential students. We also have a large amount of students choosing to
transfer in as juniors to and pay for two years instead of four. What TCU should be most worried
about is the effect a varying tuition may have on a prospective student, rather than the current
students. Chancellor Boschini and the people working at the Financial Aid office have the power to
fix the issue regarding tuition and to make TCU students and their families happier with their
choice. If they listen and start the ball rolling, then other departments, such a Fraternity Life or
Student Government can reevaluate the financial burden they put on students as

Essay on Prose Analysis “a Rose for Emily” William Faulkner
Prose Analysis "A Rose for Emily" William Faulkner The two female cousins came at once. They
held the funeral on the second day, with the town coming to look at Miss Emily beneath a mass of
bought flowers, with the crayon face of her father musing profoundly above the bier and the ladies
sibilant and macabre; and the very old men ––some in their brushed Confederate uniforms––on the
porch and the lawn, talking of Miss Emily as if she had been a contemporary of theirs, believing that
they had danced with her and courted her perhaps, confusing time with its mathematical

They are representative of an attempt to display the narrator's willingness and desire to maintain the
tradition and glory of the old southern aristocratic dialogue amongst the prevalent change. The
sentence structure contained in the paragraph adds a distinctly conversational feel allowing Faulkner
to view the reluctance to change, and traditions within this southern setting. The initial sentence of
the paragraph, in which the narrator states: "The two female cousins came at once." Allows Faulkner
to provide insight into the decedent and polished aristocratic family from which Miss Emily hails.
By keeping the sentence very short and direct, Faulkner displays that the family obviously greatly
values the continuation and celebration of the old South's tradition represented in Miss Emily's
character. In comparison that sentence is juxtaposed by the lush complex compound sentences
featured in the rest of the paragraph, which are separated into multiple hyphenated sections. This
reflects the intricacies in their lives and issues of change facing the townspeople who wish to
maintain the familiarity of their lifestyle. In addition, sentences such as "...talking of Miss Emily as
if she had been a contemporary of theirs,..." as well as "musing profoundly above the bier and the

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello
Monticello was the primary plantation of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States,
who began designing and building Monticello at age 26 after inheriting land from his father. Located
just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, in the Piedmont region, the plantation was originally 5,000
acres, with Jefferson using slaves for extensive cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops, later shifting
from tobacco cultivation to a wheat in response to changing markets. Jefferson designed the main
house at the plantation, also called Monticello, initially using neoclassical design principles
described by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, subsequently reworking the design

During his several years' in Europe, he had an opportunity to see some of the classical buildings
with which he had become acquainted from his reading, as well as to discover the "modern" trends
in French architecture that were then fashionable in Paris. His decision to remodel his own home
may date from this period. In 1794, following his service as the first U.S. Secretary of State (1790–
93), Jefferson began rebuilding his house based on the ideas he had acquired in Europe. The
remodeling continued throughout most of his presidency (1801–09). Although generally completed
by 1809, Jefferson continued work on the present structure until his death in 1826. Jefferson added a
center hallway and a parallel set of rooms to the structure, more than doubling its area. He removed
the second full–height story from the original house and replaced it with a mezzanine bedroom floor.
The interior is centered on two large rooms, which served as an entrance–hall–museum, where
Jefferson displayed his scientific interests, and a music–sitting room. The most dramatic element of
the new design was an octagonal dome, which he placed above the west front of the building in

Richmond to help parents and children coop and learn way to avoid situations of abuse. My duty for
volunteering was teaming with Virginia Commonwealth University Health Services and making
SCAN a known organization throughout Richmond community. VCU threw a wellness block party
that included many different health services but also gave members of the community to learn and
seek help with many different organizations that were there promoting their business or
organization. I sat with one other girl and passed out flyers and contact information to those who
were interested in the organizations. I explained to individuals what the program was about and the
benefits of the program. I had one particular interaction with this young mother who explained she
was in a situation where children were being abused and the authorities were notified and now she's
seeking counseling for her and the children involved. I and the other young lady volunteering with
me were able to give her information on the program and also contact numbers to individuals that
could help her situation. This young woman was very grateful and happy she found an organization

The Influence Of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello In...
Thomas Jefferson designed his home the Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. The house is a
Neoclassical structure made out of brick, glass, stone, and wood. As the father of the American
Revolution, his ideas were inspired by the classical antiquity he saw during his travels to Europe and
so the house's structure was based on the movement seeking to reinvent classical ideas. Jefferson
viewed art as a powerful tool, believing it could provoke social change, inspire the public to seek
education, and develop a general sense of the Enlightenment to the American public. Jefferson
believed scale and public nature of architecture had the ability to fulfill the aspirations of a skilled
orator, by having the ability "to Teach, to Delight, and To Move." When Jefferson began designing
his home he strayed away from the typical Wren–Baroque architecture common in Virginia because
it was seen as too British for the North Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The construction of the house began in 1768 till 1809, during this time Jefferson was largely
influenced from his travels to Europe that he redesigned and rebuilt the home to fully integrate the
ideals of French neoclassical architecture. The Monticello has symmetrical interior design, stucco
applied to trim, tall French doors and windows (allowing for circulation in the summer), with an
octagonal dome. Jefferson was obsessed in saving space and was inspired by the Palladian villas in
Italy. By introducing classical architecture to the U.S, Jefferson intended to reinforce the ideals of
the classical past; democracy, education, rationality, civic responsibility. All in all, Jefferson built a
home to represent the symbolic nature of architecture and designed the home to speak the

On a daily basis, a dental hygienist will try to make their patients as comfortable as possible, prepare
the patients for certain treatments, and retrieve records. They may even hand dental instruments and
materials to dentists. Dental Hygienists keep patients ' mouths dry by using suction devices. Another
job dental hygienists do is sterilizing equipment. They set up trays for procedures, and instruct
patients about taking care of their dental health after procedures and overall oral health care. They
may also process x–ray film. Dental Hygienists might also apply anesthetics to gums (Dental
Assistant: Work Environment.) Dental hygienists are a dentist's right–hand man/ woman. Just like
any other job can be, dental hygiene is very stressful. Adding children to that equation makes it even
worse. Children have a harder time understanding things, unlike adults. Therefore, you have to
simplify things for them and the process might take longer. For young children, fear of the unknown
is the biggest fear of all. Every child is unique; therefore, you need to be flexible and complaisant.

The Lawn At The University Of Virginia And Ix Art Park
Influences of planning theorists are evident in The Lawn at the University of Virginia and IX Art
Park in downtown Charlottesville by examining the sites' designs, activities, and users.
Thomas Jefferson designed a university to promote higher education which he called his Academic
Village, and the Lawn was the center of his design. He wanted to create a university where
everybody could not only learn and study, but also live together. Therefore, he designed pavilions
which served as houses and classrooms for teachers and rooms for students that were all connected
to each other. Furthermore, everybody had a view towards a green space called the Lawn. Jefferson's
interest in architecture influenced his design for the Academic Village. The layout of the Village
with the central lawn was inspired by French hospital planning and the surrounding structures were
inspired by Roman architecture. Jefferson aimed to create a place that was practical, healthy, and
educational. Construction began in 1817, and the university opened in March 1825 with Jefferson's
selected faculty and 123 students. Jefferson's Academic Village expanded after his death into a
larger campus, now known as the University of Virginia. Students and faculty continue to live in
rooms around the Lawn and classes are still taught in the pavilions.

An Architect, Former U.s. President Of The National...
As an architect, former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson came up with architectural designs that
came to define and influence American architecture and culture in general. This form of Neo–
Palladianism and Neo–classism architecture came to be known as Jeffersonian architecture. Some of
his notable structures include Monticello (his home), Poplar Forest which was his retreat, the
University of Virginia which he founded as well as other homes which he designed for his political
allies and friends, a good example being Barboursville. His style gained popularity in the early
American period. Similarly, it was during the same time that the more conventional Greek Revival
architecture was gaining popularity with his help. With his architectural designs, he later came to
define America's national identity and culture.
Background
Most famously recognized as "the father of the National Architecture" in America, Thomas Jefferson
sought to make American ideals and its culture unique from that of Europe, from where they had
their origins ("Architecture is My Delight" n.p). At the time Jefferson was developing his
architectural skills, America was undergoing its revolution and therefore it needed an identity of its
own, something that made it standout; and that is what Jefferson had set out to achieve. In a letter he
wrote to James Madison regarding the project of the Virginia State Capitol while on a tour of Europe
(Paris, France), Jefferson states, "I am an enthusiast on the subject of

Financial Statement Of The University Of Virginia
The financial statement of the University of Virginia divides the pension plan into diverse
categories. The categories are made up of the retirement plans, the Supplemented Retirement

Neoclassical Architecture
The Neoclassical architecture consisted in the mid–1800s to the early 1900s. One of the earliest
phases of the neoclassical architecture grew alongside with the Baroque Period. The architecture is
generally evident in England, where there are buildings like the St Paul's Cathedral, The Royal
Observatory, and The Royal Chelsea Hospital. Large–scale structures, Ionic pillars, and huge
Renaissance–style noodles represent the Neoclassical architecture. Many took inspirations from
simple shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders so they could provide a more abstract classicism.
Two well–known architects of the neoclassical period were the British architect Robert Adam and
American architect Thomas Jefferson. The British architect Robert Adam was one of the most
important architects that worked in the neo–Hellenic manner. Born in Kirkaldy, Scotland, he
followed the steps of his father and studied architecture (Albert 1). His style worked well beyond
only architect, but to interiors which included moveable objects in a room. Ancient Greece and
Rome influenced his plans and decoration. He even got his own style which is experienced as the
Adam Style or Adamesque. Some of his famous houses included the Kenwood House, Oseterley
Park, and the Syon House (Study.com 1). His plans are a lot looser and less serious, with a broad
range of color and ornamentation. His architecture was made to match the outside of the building so
it would fit the interior. So, bring everything together to

Senior Year Of High School

  • 1. Senior Year Of High School Senior year of high school, while filled with excitement and anticipation, can be a stressful time for those applying to college. Deciding on a college is not like buying a new pair of shoes; shoes can be bought, taken home, and, if necessary, returned for something else. In this respect, colleges are not so forgiving. While the option to transfer exists in theory, the expense of transferring and the complicated logistics of transferring from one university to another leave students with limited options. High school seniors applying to colleges must think carefully about where they will be for the next four years. There are countless factors that each must consider in evaluating a prospective college, but each school's academics and social life are two important factors that must be considered paramount. The University of Virginia (UVA) is one institution that offers top tier academics and a vibrant social scene. Academics are no doubt a major consideration when weighing universities; UVA is nationally recognized for its academics, and it has long been competitive as the premier university in public higher education. Any accredited university can award a degree, with varying levels of prestige to be sure, but perhaps most pertinent in evaluating a college is the quality of the education it has to offer. UVA has long been committed to investing in the quality of its academics. Professors at major universities are notorious for caring almost exclusively about their research and academic prestige, but at UVA, while undoubtedly committed to publishing first–rate research, professors are viewed as mentors. The value of this academic relationship cannot be overstated; PhDs guarantee intellectual brilliance, but they do not always translate into "good" professors. Professors at UVA regularly undergo formal instruction on pedagogy, meaning they receive formal training to ensure that each professor is teaching for the sake of learning and not just lecturing for the sake of fulfilling a job requirement. Not to be overlooked are the various study abroad opportunities that UVA has to offer. In today's global economy, study abroad opportunities offer unbeatable, invaluable experience. The UVA Class of 2017 had 1,378 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Classical Architecture: Maison Carrée, Pantheon Throughout history, great leaders have used the power of architecture to convey the fundamental ideas that formed the base of their societies. Immense amounts of money, power and time have been poured into monumental buildings over the centuries; testament to the importance humanity places on grand symbols. Classical architecture is some of the most timeless and long lasting architecture the world has ever seen. It has been the inspiration of thousands of buildings, long after the original creators and civilizations passed..The practice of using classical architecture to reference the values that classical architects used their buildings to represent several hundreds of years before was first practiced by leaders such as the monarchy of Great Britain. At the height of their empire they borrowed symbols from the emperors of ancient Rome; symbols to represent the glory of an Imperial hand stretching over a collection of colonies. A contrasting example is Thomas Jefferson, an aspiring architect who not only designed buildings for the new America, but the American democracy with it. His architecture was representative of a collection of intellectual individuals working together to create a just system of government. The classical buildings that symbolize these styles of architecture, linked by the similar architectural features, are the Maison Carrée, Pantheon and the Parthenon. Features that make the Maison Carrée distinctive include a deep portico, a hexastyle design on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Virginia Commonwealth University Personal Statement It was dark and there were so many noises around me as I slowly woke up and recalled I was in a hospital with abdominal pain. I then heard a familiar voice say "Sweetie, wake up! Wake up!" I opened my eyes to a blurry image of my mother. "Shhh... don't make any noises. We're leaving now. Just act like you are fine. We'll try to sneak out before anyone notices", my mother said. She explained later that she could not afford to pay hospital bills, so we had to leave before any physician checked over. Living in Vietnam, I was filled with resentment towards their healthcare system, as people were rejected treatment and left to perish in the streets. As a child, I therefore never considered medicine as a career. My spark for medicine was unforeseen until I went on a high school field trip at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. Hovering over the glass ceiling of the operating theater, I watched doctors performing coronary bypass surgery while witnessing the heart beat stronger and stronger. At this magical moment, I was overwhelmed by the power of medicine to save people's lives. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a first generation student, I initially had academic difficulties, as I did not know how to use all available resources. Nonetheless, I significantly improved my credentials in a post–baccalaureate program at Drexel University, which segues to a Master of Biological Science. As I studied physiology and anatomy, I was intrigued by the maintenance of homeostasis and how a single point of abnormality could cause severe problems downstream. During the course "Community Dimension of Medicine", I found myself both amazed and appalled to learn about the disparate burden of chronic disease in certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. My Experience At The Jefferson Scholarship Essay I believe that my academic strengths, leadership ability, and appreciation of those who are different from me make me a great candidate for the Jefferson scholarship. I've demonstrated unusual academic ability since elementary school. During my time at River Oaks Elementary, an International Baccalaureate school, I enjoyed and excelled in the Gifted and Talented program. My second–grade teacher told my parents at the end of the year that in his opinion I already knew all the material that I would learn in third grade. Therefore, he recommended that I skip the grade entirely. Although my parents didn't let me skip third grade, I continued to challenge myself. I asked for extra homework and devoured half the books in the library in my spare time. My wonderful teachers let me work at an accelerated pace and gave me higher level problems to keep me interested and enthusiastic about school. Similarly, my eighth–grade Spanish teacher strongly recommended that I skip Spanish II and head straight to Spanish III my freshman year. This time, I was old enough to express my desire to accelerate my learning; I urged my parents to let me skip the class and reassured them that I wouldn't be too overwhelmed. They trusted my judgement, and I'm so thankful that I made this decision. I borrowed my teacher's book over the summer and pored over it for an hour every day until I was confident in my abilities. It was intimidating walking into the sophomore– and junior–filled class on that first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Personal Narrative Essay : My Journey To Graduate College Looking out into the crowd, I saw my mother and grandmother with proud smiling faces and tears running down their cheeks. This was the moment they had been imagining, and the moment I had been pushing myself to attain over the last four years at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). As the announcer said my name on the hot summer day in June, I walked to the podium and accepted my diploma. I gave a giant smile to the audience and a nod towards my family, thanking them for their love and support, giving credit to those who had helped me along my journey to graduation. This was by far the most meaning moment of my life because of the struggles I endured, and the journey I had taken to achieve my success. I will never forget that moment and my personal quest to graduate college. All my life I wanted to be a college graduate so that I could succeed in my life. I had wanted to achieve my vision with hard work how my parents had. They influenced me during my upbringing to never give up on my dreams, and with hard work, I can have any career I chose. My goal was to graduate college with a Biology degree and to pursue a career in Medicine, one that I looked forward to throughout my high school years. However, achieving this goal was far more difficult than I imagined it would be and I experienced several obstacles and setbacks that have been difficult to overcome but have given me valuable life experiences. As his career as governor progressed along with the revolutionary war into the south, Jefferson had an idea of moving the capital to Richmond. When moving the capital they were forced to leave because that ended up being the target of the British attack. Just days before the end of his career as governor, Jefferson was forced to leave his house to avoid a capture from British cavalry. As this was taking place Jefferson had stated, "When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property." There is only one awful thing about ag class which is you have to be chosen. Ag class is certainly fun and all the kids at Carroll County Middle School enjoy ag class. One idea to do in ag class is build hands on projects. I think building is fun and can help you with life. In ag class whatever you build you get to keep and take home with you. You also learn how to build and weld which is important if you want to be a carpenter. Some of the kids do not finish their projects and they have to take home an unfinished project. (Lambeth assigned idle workers to general cleanup and repair work, and charged their wages to indirect labor.) Of course, Lambeth realized why the MOV was so large. What he was worried about, however, was Mrs. Carter. Mrs. Carter, a neighbor, had stopped by the shop one day in early September to get a price on some cabinets she wanted built. Lambeth's son, Jack Jr., spoke with her. Jack Jr. was working in the shop while on summer vacation between his first and second year of graduate business school. Furthermore, she informed him, "I would throw the dumb economics books away before I would pay a penny more than $1,500 for book cabinets to store them." Each semester VCU LEAD students are required to complete twenty hours of service, ten–community engagement hours and ten leadership hours. I believe that having a requirement of participation hours pushes students to get involved on VCU's campus and the greater Richmond area, introduces time management, as well as influences them to reflect on their new found experiences. During this fall semester, I have had the privilege of volunteering with the local youth of Richmond. In one encounter, I spent time creating a safe environment for kids to enjoy the Halloween festivities. Throughout the Living–Learning Program (LLP) week in October, I decided to volunteer my services to the ASPiRE LLP. On October 28th, 2016 from three–thirty till five– thirty I participated in the Halloween Party. Before all the children arrived from Caver Elementary, I helped other ASPiRE students decorate the hallways with cobwebs, created obstacles courses for relay races, as well as helped to hang festive banners and signs. Ash Lawn-Highland Research Paper Ash Lawn–Highland is the home of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and its located on the outskirts of Charlottesville in Albemarle, Virginia. Originally, owned by Champe Carter, Ash Lawn–Highland was a part of a much larger estate known as the Blenheim. This changed in 1793 when James Monroe purchased the land from Carter for 1,000 pounds. After several delays, Monroe, and his family moved to the Highland in 1799, where they would stay until 1825. The Highland, as Monroe and his family called it, was a working plantation that consisted of 1,000 acres that eventually expanded over time to 3,500 acres. The House During the two years I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, I passed by Monticello everyday on my way from home to school; I finally went up there to visit right before I left the town. Weaving through the giant plantation around it, the shuttle took us from the foot of the mountain to the hilltop, where the house rested. The house was relatively small compared to the size of the field surrounding it. Through several preservation and minor renovation, the floor we stepped on was still the original. I remembered walking under the house and circling back through all the servants' facilities. All the dependencies were built into the side of the mountain in a U shape. (Figure 6 &7) As for the main house for Jefferson and his family, the plan of the house showed that several rooms, especially the parlor, were hexagons, for maximizing daylight in the house, which followed the "rounded world" concept in the Pantheon. Also related to this sense, the "front" of the house were never defined. "As in Jefferson 's day, visitors today enter through the columned portico of the East Front into the Entrance Hall." West entrance is more private use for family and guests. But despite the function of the two entrance, there was no clear frontality or a single façade that dominated the house. Thomas Jefferson remains an icon in American history, despite the travesties he attributed to involving slavery. Jefferson once preached equality until he got a taste of the lavish life. Upon the inheritance of slaves, Jefferson receives a first–hand experience of the luxury of being a slave owner. Jefferson utilizes slaves to achieve economic success without regard to the suffering accompanied with the gruesome work. With his multitude of slaves Jefferson gains riches through agriculture and industry, but his excessive spending to acquire a lavish life drain him economically. Jefferson's plantation, Monticello, is famous for not only the beautiful landscape and architecture, but his plantation crops run by slaves. Crops were a large portion of profits at Monticello. The main crops are tobacco and grains because of the high price of tobacco and the necessity of grains. Monticello also grew hemp and cotton both for sale and to produce clothing in the textile shop. Grains required less labor but greater organization, and skill was essential for their success. Jefferson had 105 slaves to ensure the wheat crops ' success. Jefferson faces a decline in tobacco crops because the crop itself is extremely damaging to the soil. When the tobacco crops caused too much damage he focuses solely on grains. • 74. Modern Sensibility In The Tempest By William Shakespeare Many people argue that among the many literary works composed by William Shakespeare the tempest treats issues that revolve around reconciliation, forgiveness, and faith in the future generation. Making use of character Prospero, the Author was able to develop the major themes of the play that in broader context overthrow the Great chain of being and adopt a modern sensibility. To be in a position of exposing how Shakespeare addresses the mentioned theme, a consideration of a thesis statement that attitudes and actions of the main characters in play define the implication a play has on society. To facilitate an extrapolation of the thesis in consideration, I will first explain what is meant by the modern sensibility. In connection with artistic or social activities, modern sensibility refers to an understanding or the ability to decide what is useful and valuable. In a social setting application, modern sensibility is a way of understanding things to the social ideals of an earlier age. Making use of character Prospero, the author shows how the ideologies of an individual assume a different direction after suffering some of the transformation in the society. As the play kicks off, Prospero's conduct displays a contradiction from the basic tenets of Christian forgiveness. Depending on his good fortune, the character seizes the opportunity to take vengeance of his enemy. Not only was Jefferson the architect but in many cases, he was the general contractor. He was surely a tradesman too as in he taught his slaves and free men bricklaying, stonecutting, carpentry, cabinetmaking, and ironmongering. Jefferson's genius is easily seen and should be researched and studied. Jefferson was also the second vice president and the third president of the United States of America. There is a history in the United States of holding whatever the Presidents have and do as national treasures. This includes the building in which they were born, grew up in, lived in, and died in. It seems that the popularity and success of the President is also a variable in the public's eye. Under this assumption, Monticello would also be studied since it is the place where one of the greatest Presidents of all time lived and died. Monticello is considered one of the greatest architectural feats for the time in which it was built. Thomas Jefferson built a home that was years beyond its time. Like many other privately funded universities, it has succumbed to one of the most concerning issues for millennials and their parents today: increasing tuition annually leading to the overall problem of student debt sweeping the country. Since 2010, tuition has increased by $12,580 for TCU students, creating an increasingly large burden for students who value a small–knit community at a university where professors know your name and you have a personal identity and not just an ID number. Tuition rose by 4.8 percent, increasing it from $40,680 to $42,580 per year without room and board (Watson). This tuition increase may seem like a small amount in the grand scheme of things; however, for many students that is monstrous jump in price. For many students, that rise in tuition may be the deciding factor between returning to TCU or transferring to a university with a smaller impact on their wallets. While the tuition increase is a turnoff for current students at TCU, it has not proven to affect retention rate, which is 91 percent. (TCU Financial Aid). Although TCU has a good retention rate, it is coming from a specific group of people, with 77 percent of our student body being white and from the upper–middle class who are able to afford the tuition of a private university. This has a negative effect on the diversity at TCU, culturally and racially, which could be considered a turnoff to some potential students. We also have a large amount of students choosing to transfer in as juniors to and pay for two years instead of four. What TCU should be most worried about is the effect a varying tuition may have on a prospective student, rather than the current students. Chancellor Boschini and the people working at the Financial Aid office have the power to fix the issue regarding tuition and to make TCU students and their families happier with their choice. The initial sentence of the paragraph, in which the narrator states: "The two female cousins came at once." Allows Faulkner to provide insight into the decedent and polished aristocratic family from which Miss Emily hails. By keeping the sentence very short and direct, Faulkner displays that the family obviously greatly values the continuation and celebration of the old South's tradition represented in Miss Emily's character. In comparison that sentence is juxtaposed by the lush complex compound sentences featured in the rest of the paragraph, which are separated into multiple hyphenated sections. This reflects the intricacies in their lives and issues of change facing the townspeople who wish to maintain the familiarity of their lifestyle. In 1794, following his service as the first U.S. Secretary of State (1790– 93), Jefferson began rebuilding his house based on the ideas he had acquired in Europe. The remodeling continued throughout most of his presidency (1801–09). Although generally completed by 1809, Jefferson continued work on the present structure until his death in 1826. But this does clash with how cautious I can be when it comes to my future. I feel that Virginia Commonwealth University can ease the lack a placement that I feel. The amount of majors that VCU has to offer piqued my interest. I constantly scrolled through the list of majors and felt like they were never ending. Finding a major can be extremely difficult, at least for me. I want to make sure that I have no regrets of what I will be pursuing in because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 122. The Influence Of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello In... Thomas Jefferson designed his home the Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. The house is a Neoclassical structure made out of brick, glass, stone, and wood. As the father of the American Revolution, his ideas were inspired by the classical antiquity he saw during his travels to Europe and so the house's structure was based on the movement seeking to reinvent classical ideas. Jefferson viewed art as a powerful tool, believing it could provoke social change, inspire the public to seek education, and develop a general sense of the Enlightenment to the American public. Jefferson believed scale and public nature of architecture had the ability to fulfill the aspirations of a skilled orator, by having the ability "to Teach, to Delight, and To Move." When Jefferson began designing his home he strayed away from the typical Wren–Baroque architecture common in Virginia because it was seen as too British for the North Americans. ... The Lawn At The University Of Virginia And Ix Art Park Influences of planning theorists are evident in The Lawn at the University of Virginia and IX Art Park in downtown Charlottesville by examining the sites' designs, activities, and users. Thomas Jefferson designed a university to promote higher education which he called his Academic Village, and the Lawn was the center of his design. He wanted to create a university where everybody could not only learn and study, but also live together. Therefore, he designed pavilions which served as houses and classrooms for teachers and rooms for students that were all connected to each other. Furthermore, everybody had a view towards a green space called the Lawn. Jefferson's interest in architecture influenced his design for the Academic Village. The layout of the Village with the central lawn was inspired by French hospital planning and the surrounding structures were inspired by Roman architecture. Jefferson aimed to create a place that was practical, healthy, and educational. Construction began in 1817, and the university opened in March 1825 with Jefferson's selected faculty and 123 students. Jefferson's Academic Village expanded after his death into a larger campus, now known as the University of Virginia. Students and faculty continue to live in rooms around the Lawn and classes are still taught in the pavilions. Brian Wimer, a local filmmaker, proposed the idea of transforming an industrial site of a closed Frank Ix and Sons factory into a "communal cultural space for art, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 139. An Architect, Former U.s. President Of The National... As an architect, former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson came up with architectural designs that came to define and influence American architecture and culture in general. This form of Neo– Palladianism and Neo–classism architecture came to be known as Jeffersonian architecture. Some of his notable structures include Monticello (his home), Poplar Forest which was his retreat, the University of Virginia which he founded as well as other homes which he designed for his political allies and friends, a good example being Barboursville. His style gained popularity in the early American period. Similarly, it was during the same time that the more conventional Greek Revival architecture was gaining popularity with his help. With his architectural designs, he later came to define America's national identity and culture. Background Most famously recognized as "the father of the National Architecture" in America, Thomas Jefferson sought to make American ideals and its culture unique from that of Europe, from where they had their origins ("Architecture is My Delight" n.p). At the time Jefferson was developing his architectural skills, America was undergoing its revolution and therefore it needed an identity of its own, something that made it standout; and that is what Jefferson had set out to achieve. In a letter he wrote to James Madison regarding the project of the Virginia State Capitol while on a tour of Europe (Paris, France), Jefferson states, "I am an enthusiast on the subject of ... One of the earliest phases of the neoclassical architecture grew alongside with the Baroque Period. The architecture is generally evident in England, where there are buildings like the St Paul's Cathedral, The Royal Observatory, and The Royal Chelsea Hospital. Large–scale structures, Ionic pillars, and huge Renaissance–style noodles represent the Neoclassical architecture. Many took inspirations from simple shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders so they could provide a more abstract classicism. Two well–known architects of the neoclassical period were the British architect Robert Adam and American architect Thomas Jefferson. The British architect Robert Adam was one of the most important architects that worked in the neo–Hellenic manner. Born in Kirkaldy, Scotland, he followed the steps of his father and studied architecture (Albert 1). His style worked well beyond only architect, but to interiors which included moveable objects in a room. Ancient Greece and Rome influenced his plans and decoration. He even got his own style which is experienced as the Adam Style or Adamesque. Some of his famous houses included the Kenwood House, Oseterley Park, and the Syon House (Study.com 1). His plans are a lot looser and less serious, with a broad range of color and ornamentation. His architecture was made to match the outside of the building so it would fit the interior.
