What is Energypedia?
*Wiki is a web application which allows users to add, modify, or delete content in a collaboration with others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
4. Internal Project Wiki
• Developed within the Dutch-German energy partnership Energising Development (EnDev), implemented by
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as an internal tool for knowledge
and project management.
Birth of energypedia
• EnDev wiki relaunched as a separate workspace under the name "energypedia".
• energypedia could then be used by all GIZ staff
Energypedia goes Public
• Public users able to register, read and contribute content
energypedia UG Nonprofit Founded
• Founded as not-for-profit organization, independent from GIZ in April 2012

5. Energy poverty and development
• 1.3 billion people lack access to any form of
electricity and 2.7 billion people still cook over
open fires
• Securing access to sustainable energy services
for developing countries is a significant
challenge for sustainable development
Energy is an enabler and powers opportunities for
environmental, social and economic development
First hand knowledge on renewable energy
technologies in developing countries often only
exists locally or in fragments
• Difficult for individuals to access this
information
• Necessary to facilitate and expand diffusion of
theses technologies in developing countries
through practical knowledge sharing
Why Energy?
6. Vision
• A world of borderless and unrestricted knowledge access
and exchange on renewable energy and energy efficiency
issues, in which all people have access to sustainable
energy services.
Mission Statement
To contribute to addressing the question of how universal
access to sustainable energy services for all can be achieved
through:
• Leveraging Web 2.0 technologies to connect knowledge,
expertise, communities, cross-cutting initiatives and
strengthen partner relationships to expand the diffusion
of energy information
• Fostering global collaborative knowledge exchange on
renewable energy and energy access issues, and
• Creating the right environment and providing useful tools
for stakeholders engaged in the energy sector to
collaborate and share knowledge and practical
experience.
