Book Report on the Outsiders
Major Characters Ponyboy Curtis – The novel's fourteen–year–old narrator and protagonist, and the
youngest of the greasers. Ponyboy's literary interests and academic accomplishments set him apart
from the rest of his gang. Because his parents have died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his
brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry repeatedly accuses Ponyboy of lacking common sense, but
Ponyboy is a reliable and observant narrator. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy struggles with class
division, violence, innocence, and familial love. He matures over the course of the novel, eventually
realizing the importance of strength in the face of class bias. Darrell Curtis – Ponyboy's oldest
brother. Darrell, known as "Darry," is a twenty–year–old greaser...show more content...
Randy helps Ponyboy realize that Socs are as susceptible to pain as anyone else. Randy tries to
make peace with Ponyboy after Ponyboy saves the children from the fire, and he refuses to fight in
the Soc–greaser rumble. Bob Sheldon – Cherry's boyfriend. Bob is the dark–haired Soc who beats
up Johnny before the novel begins. Bob has a set of three heavy rings, which he wears when he
fights greasers. Bob's indulgent parents have never disciplined him. Paul Holden – The husky blond
Soc who steps forward to challenge Darry when the rumble begins. Paul and Darry were friends and
football teammates in high school. Jerry Wood– The teacher who accompanies Ponyboy to the
hospital after Ponyboy saves the children from the fire. Though an adult and a member of
mainstream society, Jerry judges the greasers on their merits instead of automatically branding them
juvenile delinquents. Tim Shepard – The leader of another band of greasers and a friend of Dally.
Tim and Dally respect each other, despite occasional conflicts. Ponyboy thinks of Tim as an alley
cat, hungry and restless. Tim does not appear in the novel until the night of the rumble, when his
gang sides with Ponyboy's. Ponyboy sees Shepard's gang as real street hoods and criminals, and
realizes that his own gang is little more than a group of friends fighting to survive. Curly Shepard –
The fifteen–year–old brother of Tim Shepard. Curly is stubborn and rough. He cannot go to the

Rose Reeves Mr.Boynton English 4 12/14/2015 The Outsiders Book Report The Outsiders is a
book written by S.E. Hinton. It is a book about a teen gang in Oklahoma called the Greasers, they
are at war with the socials a gang of rich kids. When 2 members of the greasers PonyBoy and
Johnny get into a fight with the socials it ends in the death of one of the social members, Pony
and Johnny are forced to go into hiding. Pony, Johnny, Dallas and the other greasers must face the
consequences of their violent lives. I chose this book because I remember reading it in the 6th
grade and always remembering that line "Stay Gold Ponyboy" and so I decided to pick the book
back up and take a trip down memory lane. The outsiders takes place in Tulsa Oklahoma. Tulsa
Oklahoma. Tulsa is right in the heart of Green Country. The green hills and wooded terrain of the
city is at an elevation of 700 feet above sea level and offers a temperate climate. Tulsans enjoy an

The Outsiders is a book where there are two sides of different people that are always fighting with
each other and always try to be better than the other. One is called the 'greasers' which is the poor,
tough, and unforgiving peoples. The other one is the 'socs' which is the wealthy boys that beat up
the greasers for their own amusement. Ponyboy and his brothers are part of the greasers and they
all live together in one house after there parents died. Ponyboy is the main character and he is the
main protagonist. His brother Sodapop is a laid back guy who cares about Ponyboy the most. His
other brother Darry is the main man in the household who takes care of them. One of the themes of

BOOK REPORT: "The Outsiders" 1.Hinton, S.E. The Outsiders. New York: Puffin Books, 1967
2.The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are
"outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they
do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just
because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy
and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are
sensitive. 3.This story is about a group of kids that are called Greasers, because they live on the
East side of town, which is the lower income part of the city....show more content...
And Pony shows intelligence because it says in the book that he gets good grades in school.
5.This story takes place on the East side of town, in a place not mentioned in the book. When
Johnny and Pony run off to escape the police, it takes place in the country in an abandoned
church. It takes place in winter, because when Johnny and Pony are at the park, it says that it was
very cold and it said things like... Johnny would sleep in the lot when it was summer, so the story
must have taken place some time in the winter. The neighborhood that the kids live in is the
poorer side of the town, and not a very good neighborhood. 6.a. The main theme of this story in
my opinion is about Stereotyping people based on what they look like. Ponyboy was labeled a
"greaser" just because he was poor and he lived on the east side of town. Although he enjoyed
being a greaser, Ponyboy was not like the rest of them, because he enjoyed school and did not
shoplift. Also, Cherry was labeled as a "soc" because she lived on the West side of town, and was
rich. But Cherry wasn't like a Soc because she didn't enjoy beer blasts or getting drunk like the
rest of the Socs. b. The author wants the reader to know not to judge a book by its cover. Ponyboy
and Cherry were labeled rivals, but they were really not because they both enjoyed the same things,
and they didn't hate each other. One was a Soc, who didn't enjoy all the things that the other

This book showed the struggle between rich and poor. The two main groups of the story were the
Socs and the greasers. The Socs are in the upper class while the greasers are the poor ones that
dislike the Socs because they have more money, better cars, and act like they are better than the
greasers. The Outsiders is a good story by S.E. Hinton that shows the struggles of growing up
Hinton did a fine job with the character development, the plot, and the theme with a few flaws. The
Outsiders is a book that changed the style of young adult writers because it went off from the genre
that young adult writer were using during that time period. The reader sees the everyday problems
that teenagers were going through, "I can't take much more...show more content...
The fact that all three boys were still moving on without their parents showed that they had a lot
of heart. The two main divisions were between the Greasers and the Socs, and this rivalry led to
many conflicts in the book. Hinton illustrates the divisions and fighting in this quote, "They
caught him and one of them had a lot of rings on his hand that's what had cut Johnny up so badly"
(Hinton 33). Johnny was attacked by four Socs when he was playing with a football at the park.
There are many times in the book where Socs attacked Greasers that were walking alone. Howard
explains the divisions and violence of the gangs in this quote, "Tulsa was one of many American
cities that had seen an increasing division between social classes since World War II, and the
animosity between Greasers and Socs gangs illustrated the extent to which this division between
social classes had permeated society" (Howard 28). The Greasers were seen as the poor outcast
while the Socs were the popular one with all the money. The Socs provoke the Greasers by saying
hurtful things and attacking them so both gangs feel the need to fight to prove that they are better.
Hinton did a good job of portraying the violence and building up to these points and this keeps the
reader interested in the book. There are many critics and parents who were outraged about the
violence that takes place in the book. This quote by Hinton demonstrates the harsh violence, "I

all of them in this essay. The two groups are the soc and the greasers. The greasers are Ponyboy

has a girlfriend named sandy but she is not mentioned very much. The soc are Randy Anderson,
Bob Sheldon, Paul Holden, and Jerry Wood. Bob and Randy both have a girlfriend Cherry
Valance is a soc cheerleader and bob's girl friend there's also Marcia, Randy's girlfriend and

At the age of 16, S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders, a fictional novel set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1965,
that exemplifies the truth of living outside of social acceptance. The story is told in the
perspective of fourteen year old Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is a greaser, along with his two older
brothers and fellow gang members. Greaser, is a nickname for people classified in the lower
class. Members of the upper communal populace, are labeled Socs, short for socials. The story
describes the conflicts these two groups come across when they encounter each other and the
struggle of living in devastating conditions. When Ponyboy and close friend Johnny Cade, are
attacked by a set of Socs, Johnny ends ups killing a Soc in order to protect Ponyboy. This...show

So I lay still, swearing at them between gasps. A blade was held against my throat." A group of
Socs had followed Ponyboy and jumped him. They beat him up, chucked him to the ground, and
even held an edge to his throat region. There's a strong possibility they could have killed him then
and there if Ponyboy's gang hadn't saved him. They chose to purposefully harm a fourteen year old
with a blade because he happened to be different from them and for their own enjoyment. Today, a
problem school districts try to fight is discrimination and bullying. There are rules set in order to
prevent this. Even if something like this went done today, there would be serious consequences. The
Socs just ran away, with no problem. From this scene, I felt horrified and disgusted by the actions
conducted by the Socs towards Ponyboy. The idea that just because you consider yourself above
others, doesn't give you the right to hurt them. In reality, they were all people, yet the Socs thought
their actions were acceptable due to their social standing. There is more proof of the Socs
characterization as menaces and monsters throughout the

As Dally was running away from the hospital he was probably thinking that he had failed Johnny
and that he didn't try hard enough to keep him out of trouble. This would of made Dally that
depressed that fast that he thought to himself i don't want to live anymore and he made the
decision to get himself killed by the cops. Dally wouldn't of had enough time to think of his
decision since he went straight to the store and he was filled with so much anger he wouldn't of
even tried to stop and make a reasonable decision Some key issues in "The Outsiders" is the
violence the greasers get from the Socs. Johnny experiences violence from the Socs at the start of
the novel in the lot. Both Ponyboy and Johnny experience violence in the park when the Socs are
drunk and looking for a fight and start drowning Ponyboy and hitting Johnny. Themes in "The
Outsiders" include society and class, loyalty, love, violence, isolation, appearances, education.
Loyalty is the most shown theme in "The Outsiders". Loyalty is used mainly by the greasers in the
novel it is shown at various parts in the book one of the main parts is where Dally jumps through the
window to pull Johnny out of the burning church. The second most used theme in "The Outsiders"
Violence. Violence is used in every chapter much like loyalty. The main part in "The Outsiders"

Ponyboy is restricted to bed rest for a week after he wakes up after the brawl and Dally's death. He
finds a picture of Bob the Soc in Sodapop's high school yearbook. Bob's smile reminds him of
Sodapop's and concludes that Bob was cocky, hot–tempered, frightened, and human. Randy arrives at
the house to talk to Ponyboy and does not think about Pony's feelings They talk about the hearing
scheduled for the next day. Ponyboy deliriously says that he killed Bob himself and that Johnny
is still alive. Darry asks Randy to leave. After the hearing, Ponyboy becomes detached and
depressed. Mr. Syme, Ponyboy's English teacher, says that Ponyboy is failing and he can raise his
grade to a C by writing an outstanding theme on a topic of his choice. The next day at lunch,
Ponyboy goes to the grocery store with Steve and Two–Bit for candy bars and Cokes and they
almost get into a fight with some Socs. Ponyboy threats them with a broken glass bottle, which
worries Steve and Two–Bit. They are relieved when Ponyboy bends down to pick up the broken
glass, not wanting anyone to get a flat tire. Later Darry and Ponyboy fight, which make Sodapop run

Plot
There are two groups in this book, the lower income families on the east side called greasers and
the higher income paid families who live on the West side of town called Socs. One night the
protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis and friend Johnny Cade were making their way back from a movie,
they decide to lay down and talk for a little bit before they go home. His older brother, Darry, is
waiting when Pony walks in. They instantly start arguing and Darry smacks Ponyboy across the
face. Ponyboy and Johnny runaway moments later and find themselves in a park with drunk Socs
who attack Ponyboy. Ponyboy regains consciousness to find himself lying on the ground next to an
Socs dead body. Johnny had stabbed a Soc in the back with his switchblade. They hang low at an

In this case, greasers are from the East and don't earn a lot of money; Socs are from the West and
have plenty of money. Furthermore, the story takes place in the 1960's during discrimination and
racial tensions are high, not to mention in Oklahoma. Ponyboy and Johnny take a train to
Windrixville to live in an abandon church for a week. Then Ponyboy and Johnny come back, but
this time in the hospital. Lastly, the book ends in the park where Dally is gun down.
Conflict
There are two conflicts that are mainly presented in The Outsiders. First, Ponyboy feels unloved by
his brother Darry. Ponyboy feels this way when he's walking home from the movies and is yelled at
for walking home alone when nobody would go with him. Darry states many times to Ponyboy "use
your head." Also in the novel, Johnny goes through man vs fate because he can't escape his death.
He believes that his death was for a great purpose and that the kids live have greater value than his,
but he still doesn't want to die.

On page 150 it said "The still body back in the hospital wasn't Johnny. Johnny was somewhere
else–maybe asleep in the lot, or playing the pinball machine in the bowling alley, or sitting on the
back steps of the church in Windrixville." Ponyboy wanted to think all of that because he didn't
want to accept the fact the Johnny was dead. The Author wrote "He ran out like the devil was
after him. He's going to blow. He couldn't take it." The author was talking about Dally because
Dally loved Johnny more than anything and he couldn't live without Johnny. So Johnny decided
to rob a bank so he could get shot by the police because of how heartbroken he was. "He killed
Bob. Oh, maybe Bob was asking for it. I know he did. But I couldn't never look at the person who
killed him. You only knew his bad side. He could be sweet sometimes, and friendly." (Valance
128) Cherry said that because of how hurt she was that Johnny killed Bob. Cherry and Bob were
dating but the only reason Bob got like that, that night he died was because of how drunk he was.
Bob died because he got stabbed in the back. Johnny and Ponyboy were walking Cherry and her
friend home and since Bob was drunk he got mad and decided to jump Ponyboy and Johnny.
Johnny had a switchblade on him and stabbed Bob. These examples support my theme because a lot

care about him. This quote illustrates that Johnny thinks that he doesn't have anyone to protect
him because he was so focused on how his parents were never there for him. He says, "I walk out,
and nobody says anything. I stay away all night and nobody notices" (pg 51). Johnny is referring
to "nobody" as his parents. When Johnny says that he has nobody and Ponyboy has "at least got

Ponyboy who really care about him. Everyone in his gang is always there for him but he doesn't

died in a car wreak and because of this, he lives with his two older brothers, Dally's father is an
alcoholic, Two–Bit's mother is never home because she is working several jobs, and Johnny, whose
parents are abusive alcohol and drug addicts that constantly beat him up. There are times when
even these members of the gang feel like they have no one to comfort them. Dally likes to get into
trouble. Doing this gives him a sense of power, strength, and security to the point where he feels like
he doesn't need anyone to protect him or help him work through all of the challenges in his life.

The book Outsiders was a very interesting book, I got to learn about how stuff worked back then.
It had a lot of unexpected events. What i liked the most about this book was that ponyboy was
always himself and never let anything change what he liked. Even though ponyboy was a greaser he
always wanted to be the one who got a college education.
My favorite character was ponyboy, I just love the way he always carried himself.
He was very mature for his age too. He never let anyone pick on him for being the youngest and
when someone did he fixed that situation like an adult would. I didn't really have a least favorite, I

The Outsiders Different people have different points of view, as they are unique in many ways.
Ponyboy, the main protagonist in The Outsiders, had his own philosophy, unlike Darry, Sodapop,
and Dallas. Their individual personality separated them, giving them an either more mature or
immature texture. The oldest of them all, Darry was a very cold and practical person, too practical
for his own good. Though he cares about his youngest brother, Ponyboy, he refrains from showing it
and usually pretends to be mean and cranky– the exact opposite of what he actually is. If he had
narrated this book, it would have been more sad and painful, as Darry's parents died at a young
age, with Darry having to bear the weight of his brothers's troubles on his shoulders. This made
him as emotionless as can be, staring at people like they were meaningless. This side of him
proves his narration to also be more aggressive, as he was once a football player until the death of
his parents changed his attitude. On the other hand, he tried to be nice to the rest of his family, once
crying for Ponyboy, which he never did, even at his parent's funeral. Life...show more content...
While Darry worried and acted taciturn, Sodapop relaxed and was always making funny remarks.
Unlike Ponyboy, Sodapop also expressed his feelings, making his version of the story more like a
diary. Sodapop also could make anybody grin, an ability he used on just about everybody, even the
police. He would always find a way to crack someone up, showing that his story would be
humorous. Besides being stress–free and funny, Sodapop's tale should be a little more on the sad
side, a result from quitting college and having to work at small jobs. If it was he who wrote his
own book, the grammar and spelling might be flawed, after all not being able to graduate from a
university. His side would be more entertaining, as he himself was exactly

While reading The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, It was as if I took a time travel to the 1960s. The
book gave me a clear insight to the past. Unlike other books i've read, The Outsiders has its own
unique content. It was new to me, how the content of the book is not a modern cliche book.
Hinton's word choice creates an interesting book where it felt as if it was non–fiction than
young–adult fiction. I like this book because the author made something extraordinary by stating
what's right in front of him rather than creating fairy tale or fantasy .
The theme of the novel is that one's culture and background doesn't defy Him/herself . In other
words, getting involved with a gang or group doesn't mean you're not different. For example,
Ponyboy is in a gang , The Greasers, and does things like mug and snatch like the other members in
the group. That doesn't stop him from having a different personality than the others. Another theme
in the novel is the power of brotherhood. This is a sub–theme because it's not confronted to the
readers until the end of the novel. On page 176, Sodapop Curtis said, " We ought to be able to stick
together against everything if we don't have each other we don't have anything." This quote struck
out to me because throughout the novel, I detected the...show more content...
Society had a different outlook about social classes and violence. On page 167, Ponyboy said, "
He looked a little nervous, I wished they'd let him have a cigarette." This quote shows that both
Socs and greasers use cigarettes to calm down and escape from reality which is odd because
cigarettes are the cause for many health issues. The book is different to modern world due to this.
After finishing this book, I have learned that friendship is something you have to respect , keep, and
cherish. Also, sometimes when you can't cope with your family, you will always find a way to

The Outsiders Book Report Essay

  • 1. Book Report on the Outsiders Major Characters Ponyboy Curtis – The novel's fourteen–year–old narrator and protagonist, and the youngest of the greasers. Ponyboy's literary interests and academic accomplishments set him apart from the rest of his gang. Because his parents have died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry repeatedly accuses Ponyboy of lacking common sense, but Ponyboy is a reliable and observant narrator. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy struggles with class division, violence, innocence, and familial love. He matures over the course of the novel, eventually realizing the importance of strength in the face of class bias. Darrell Curtis – Ponyboy's oldest brother. Darrell, known as "Darry," is a twenty–year–old greaser...show more content... Randy helps Ponyboy realize that Socs are as susceptible to pain as anyone else. Randy tries to make peace with Ponyboy after Ponyboy saves the children from the fire, and he refuses to fight in the Soc–greaser rumble. Bob Sheldon – Cherry's boyfriend. Bob is the dark–haired Soc who beats up Johnny before the novel begins. Bob has a set of three heavy rings, which he wears when he fights greasers. Bob's indulgent parents have never disciplined him. Paul Holden – The husky blond Soc who steps forward to challenge Darry when the rumble begins. Paul and Darry were friends and football teammates in high school. Jerry Wood– The teacher who accompanies Ponyboy to the hospital after Ponyboy saves the children from the fire. Though an adult and a member of mainstream society, Jerry judges the greasers on their merits instead of automatically branding them juvenile delinquents. Tim Shepard – The leader of another band of greasers and a friend of Dally. Tim and Dally respect each other, despite occasional conflicts. Ponyboy thinks of Tim as an alley cat, hungry and restless. Tim does not appear in the novel until the night of the rumble, when his gang sides with Ponyboy's. Ponyboy sees Shepard's gang as real street hoods and criminals, and realizes that his own gang is little more than a group of friends fighting to survive. Curly Shepard – The fifteen–year–old brother of Tim Shepard. Curly is stubborn and rough. He cannot go to the rumble Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. The Outsiders Book Report Essay Rose Reeves Mr.Boynton English 4 12/14/2015 The Outsiders Book Report The Outsiders is a book written by S.E. Hinton. It is a book about a teen gang in Oklahoma called the Greasers, they are at war with the socials a gang of rich kids. When 2 members of the greasers PonyBoy and Johnny get into a fight with the socials it ends in the death of one of the social members, Pony and Johnny are forced to go into hiding. Pony, Johnny, Dallas and the other greasers must face the consequences of their violent lives. I chose this book because I remember reading it in the 6th grade and always remembering that line "Stay Gold Ponyboy" and so I decided to pick the book back up and take a trip down memory lane. The outsiders takes place in Tulsa Oklahoma. Tulsa Oklahoma. Tulsa is right in the heart of Green Country. The green hills and wooded terrain of the city is at an elevation of 700 feet above sea level and offers a temperate climate. Tulsans enjoy an average daily...show more content... • 5. Outsiders Book Report BOOK REPORT: "The Outsiders" 1.Hinton, S.E. The Outsiders. New York: Puffin Books, 1967 2.The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive. 3.This story is about a group of kids that are called Greasers, because they live on the East side of town, which is the lower income part of the city....show more content... And Pony shows intelligence because it says in the book that he gets good grades in school. 5.This story takes place on the East side of town, in a place not mentioned in the book. When Johnny and Pony run off to escape the police, it takes place in the country in an abandoned church. It takes place in winter, because when Johnny and Pony are at the park, it says that it was very cold and it said things like... Johnny would sleep in the lot when it was summer, so the story must have taken place some time in the winter. The neighborhood that the kids live in is the poorer side of the town, and not a very good neighborhood. 6.a. The main theme of this story in my opinion is about Stereotyping people based on what they look like. Ponyboy was labeled a "greaser" just because he was poor and he lived on the east side of town. Although he enjoyed being a greaser, Ponyboy was not like the rest of them, because he enjoyed school and did not shoplift. Also, Cherry was labeled as a "soc" because she lived on the West side of town, and was rich. But Cherry wasn't like a Soc because she didn't enjoy beer blasts or getting drunk like the rest of the Socs. b. The author wants the reader to know not to judge a book by its cover. Ponyboy and Cherry were labeled rivals, but they were really not because they both enjoyed the same things, and they didn't hate each other. One was a Soc, who didn't enjoy all the things that the other Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. This book showed the struggle between rich and poor. The two main groups of the story were the Socs and the greasers. The Socs are in the upper class while the greasers are the poor ones that dislike the Socs because they have more money, better cars, and act like they are better than the greasers. The Outsiders is a good story by S.E. Hinton that shows the struggles of growing up Hinton did a fine job with the character development, the plot, and the theme with a few flaws. The Outsiders is a book that changed the style of young adult writers because it went off from the genre that young adult writer were using during that time period. The reader sees the everyday problems that teenagers were going through, "I can't take much more...show more content... The fact that all three boys were still moving on without their parents showed that they had a lot of heart. The two main divisions were between the Greasers and the Socs, and this rivalry led to many conflicts in the book. Hinton illustrates the divisions and fighting in this quote, "They caught him and one of them had a lot of rings on his hand that's what had cut Johnny up so badly" (Hinton 33). Johnny was attacked by four Socs when he was playing with a football at the park. There are many times in the book where Socs attacked Greasers that were walking alone. Howard explains the divisions and violence of the gangs in this quote, "Tulsa was one of many American cities that had seen an increasing division between social classes since World War II, and the animosity between Greasers and Socs gangs illustrated the extent to which this division between social classes had permeated society" (Howard 28). The Greasers were seen as the poor outcast while the Socs were the popular one with all the money. The Socs provoke the Greasers by saying hurtful things and attacking them so both gangs feel the need to fight to prove that they are better. Hinton did a good job of portraying the violence and building up to these points and this keeps the reader interested in the book. There are many critics and parents who were outraged about the violence that takes place in the book. This quote by Hinton demonstrates the harsh violence, "I ducked and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Outsider Book Report The outsider essay In this essay there will be a couple characters from the book I will not mention all of them in this essay. The two groups are the soc and the greasers. The greasers are Ponyboy Curtis, Darrel Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Two–bit Mathews, Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade. Sodapop has a girlfriend named sandy but she is not mentioned very much. The soc are Randy Anderson, Bob Sheldon, Paul Holden, and Jerry Wood. Bob and Randy both have a girlfriend Cherry Valance is a soc cheerleader and bob's girl friend there's also Marcia, Randy's girlfriend and cherry's friend. The girls are not mentioned very much in the story and don't play a very big role. Tim Shepard and Curly Shepard are part of another greaser group that helps Darrel in a rumble. A rumble is a street fight were no weapons were allowed. I'm writing this essay on the rumble were pony boy almost got drowned and how they lied to a cop about ponyboy's injuries. They say that pony boy fell off his motorcycle, but really he was in a fight. When the first set up the rumble pony boy isn't...show more content... Before the rumble all the greasers were getting hypped up and getting ready for the fight when they left for the rumble they were doing front flips, back flips and front hand springs. The reason they know how to do this is because dally took a gymnastic course and taught all the boys how to do flips and stuff. When they get to the rumble no one wants to start it off so Paul holden steps forward and waits for somebody else to do the same. Darry knows Paul from football. The rumble, start just as another member of the greasers shows up his name is duly. The rumble is set to start at 7:00pm and the meal before the rumble pony boy slams down five aspirin. • 9. The Outsiders Book Report Tuff: when you try to be cooler than the others. The Outsiders is a book about friendship with a lot of friends that stick together, do what each other want them to do, and do everything together. I have read the book and there are many pages. But there are a couple chapters that stick out to me and prove that they are all of those things. First, they stick together because they love each other. In Chapter 4 When Johnny killed the soc he asked Dally for a heater (gun) so he could protect himself. He gave him it and they Johnny and Ponyboy ran away to an abandoned church in the country. Pony and Johnny have to stick together to survive. This shows that they will never be broke even if they get into a fight. Second, they will do anything that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. The Outsiders Book Report At the age of 16, S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders, a fictional novel set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1965, that exemplifies the truth of living outside of social acceptance. The story is told in the perspective of fourteen year old Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is a greaser, along with his two older brothers and fellow gang members. Greaser, is a nickname for people classified in the lower class. Members of the upper communal populace, are labeled Socs, short for socials. The story describes the conflicts these two groups come across when they encounter each other and the struggle of living in devastating conditions. When Ponyboy and close friend Johnny Cade, are attacked by a set of Socs, Johnny ends ups killing a Soc in order to protect Ponyboy. This...show more content... So I lay still, swearing at them between gasps. A blade was held against my throat." A group of Socs had followed Ponyboy and jumped him. They beat him up, chucked him to the ground, and even held an edge to his throat region. There's a strong possibility they could have killed him then and there if Ponyboy's gang hadn't saved him. They chose to purposefully harm a fourteen year old with a blade because he happened to be different from them and for their own enjoyment. Today, a problem school districts try to fight is discrimination and bullying. There are rules set in order to prevent this. Even if something like this went done today, there would be serious consequences. The Socs just ran away, with no problem. From this scene, I felt horrified and disgusted by the actions conducted by the Socs towards Ponyboy. The idea that just because you consider yourself above others, doesn't give you the right to hurt them. In reality, they were all people, yet the Socs thought their actions were acceptable due to their social standing. There is more proof of the Socs characterization as menaces and monsters throughout the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Outsiders Book Report "The Outsiders" is a book written by 16 year old S.E Hinton. "The Outsides" is a book about a family of three brothers whose mother and father have been killed in a car crash and the eldest (Darrel "Darry" Curtis) has to raise his 2 brothers (Ponyboy and Sodapop Curtis) all by himself in the poor part of town which has their gang (The Greasers). The setting for this book is a small gang in America that is poor and most of the gang members are orphans or they have parents that don't care about them. This gang also has a lot of confrontation with the cops and the rival gang "The Socs". The novel is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965. The city is 106 miles out of Oklahoma City or 1 and a half hours away. (Dallas "Dally" Winston) was sort of crazy...show more content... As Dally was running away from the hospital he was probably thinking that he had failed Johnny and that he didn't try hard enough to keep him out of trouble. This would of made Dally that depressed that fast that he thought to himself i don't want to live anymore and he made the decision to get himself killed by the cops. Dally wouldn't of had enough time to think of his decision since he went straight to the store and he was filled with so much anger he wouldn't of even tried to stop and make a reasonable decision Some key issues in "The Outsiders" is the violence the greasers get from the Socs. Johnny experiences violence from the Socs at the start of the novel in the lot. Both Ponyboy and Johnny experience violence in the park when the Socs are drunk and looking for a fight and start drowning Ponyboy and hitting Johnny. Themes in "The Outsiders" include society and class, loyalty, love, violence, isolation, appearances, education. Loyalty is the most shown theme in "The Outsiders". Loyalty is used mainly by the greasers in the novel it is shown at various parts in the book one of the main parts is where Dally jumps through the window to pull Johnny out of the burning church. The second most used theme in "The Outsiders" Violence. Violence is used in every chapter much like loyalty. • 15. Book Report: The Outsiders The Outsiders was first published in 1967, it's a book about Greasers which are a group of boys who some don't have a good life at home, most of them don't go to school, and they are a gang. Also, about the Socs who are rich kids that usually get what they want. They main characters are Ponyboy, Darry, Sodapop, tow–bit, Johnny, and Dally. Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop are all brothers that live alone because both of their parents died by a car crash. Two–bit is the oldest out of the gang and he is the wisecracker out of the group. Johnny always has a nervous look on his face because one time he got jumped by the Socs. Also, he always carries a switchblade with him ever since the Socs jumped him because he almost got beat to death. Dally was in...show more content... On page 150 it said "The still body back in the hospital wasn't Johnny. Johnny was somewhere else–maybe asleep in the lot, or playing the pinball machine in the bowling alley, or sitting on the back steps of the church in Windrixville." Ponyboy wanted to think all of that because he didn't want to accept the fact the Johnny was dead. The Author wrote "He ran out like the devil was after him. He's going to blow. He couldn't take it." The author was talking about Dally because Dally loved Johnny more than anything and he couldn't live without Johnny. So Johnny decided to rob a bank so he could get shot by the police because of how heartbroken he was. "He killed Bob. Oh, maybe Bob was asking for it. I know he did. But I couldn't never look at the person who killed him. You only knew his bad side. He could be sweet sometimes, and friendly." (Valance 128) Cherry said that because of how hurt she was that Johnny killed Bob. Cherry and Bob were dating but the only reason Bob got like that, that night he died was because of how drunk he was. Bob died because he got stabbed in the back. Johnny and Ponyboy were walking Cherry and her friend home and since Bob was drunk he got mad and decided to jump Ponyboy and Johnny. Johnny had a switchblade on him and stabbed Bob. These examples support my theme because a lot of people loved Johnny, Dally, and Bob but since they did something bad Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Book Report : ' The Outsiders ' A writer on Pinterest posted a quote that said, "Maybe I can't stop the downpour, but I will always join you for a walk in the rain." This quotes tells us that our friends will always be there for us, even when times are difficult. In the novel titled The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a young, meek boy named Johnny Cade shows that he develops as a strong man who realizes that no matter how tough a time he is going through, his friends are always going to be there to support him and help him get through all of the hardships in his life. Johnny is one of the youngest character in The Outsiders. He is part of a gang of teenage boys who identify as the greasers. The greasers do not have a lot of money or things but that never stops them from...show more content... At least you got Soda. I ain't got nobody" (pg 51). Johnny's parents beat him up often and don't care about him. This quote illustrates that Johnny thinks that he doesn't have anyone to protect him because he was so focused on how his parents were never there for him. He says, "I walk out, and nobody says anything. I stay away all night and nobody notices" (pg 51). Johnny is referring to "nobody" as his parents. When Johnny says that he has nobody and Ponyboy has "at least got Soda", he is so focused on his parents that he doesn't stop to think about the gang or people like Ponyboy who really care about him. Everyone in his gang is always there for him but he doesn't realize it yet. Many of the Greasers have a problem within their family. Ponyboy's parents both died in a car wreak and because of this, he lives with his two older brothers, Dally's father is an alcoholic, Two–Bit's mother is never home because she is working several jobs, and Johnny, whose parents are abusive alcohol and drug addicts that constantly beat him up. There are times when even these members of the gang feel like they have no one to comfort them. Dally likes to get into trouble. Doing this gives him a sense of power, strength, and security to the point where he feels like he doesn't need anyone to protect him or help him work through all of the challenges in his life. • 17. The Outsiders Book Report The book Outsiders was a very interesting book, I got to learn about how stuff worked back then. It had a lot of unexpected events. What i liked the most about this book was that ponyboy was always himself and never let anything change what he liked. Even though ponyboy was a greaser he always wanted to be the one who got a college education. My favorite character was ponyboy, I just love the way he always carried himself. He was very mature for his age too. He never let anyone pick on him for being the youngest and when someone did he fixed that situation like an adult would. I didn't really have a least favorite, I liked all of them even though at times I didn't like some of them. At the end though everyone kinda settled themselves in as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. The Outsiders Book Report Essay The Outsiders Different people have different points of view, as they are unique in many ways. Ponyboy, the main protagonist in The Outsiders, had his own philosophy, unlike Darry, Sodapop, and Dallas. Their individual personality separated them, giving them an either more mature or immature texture. The oldest of them all, Darry was a very cold and practical person, too practical for his own good. Though he cares about his youngest brother, Ponyboy, he refrains from showing it and usually pretends to be mean and cranky– the exact opposite of what he actually is. If he had narrated this book, it would have been more sad and painful, as Darry's parents died at a young age, with Darry having to bear the weight of his brothers's troubles on his shoulders. This made him as emotionless as can be, staring at people like they were meaningless. This side of him proves his narration to also be more aggressive, as he was once a football player until the death of his parents changed his attitude. On the other hand, he tried to be nice to the rest of his family, once crying for Ponyboy, which he never did, even at his parent's funeral. Life...show more content... While Darry worried and acted taciturn, Sodapop relaxed and was always making funny remarks. Unlike Ponyboy, Sodapop also expressed his feelings, making his version of the story more like a diary. Sodapop also could make anybody grin, an ability he used on just about everybody, even the police. He would always find a way to crack someone up, showing that his story would be humorous. Besides being stress–free and funny, Sodapop's tale should be a little more on the sad side, a result from quitting college and having to work at small jobs. If it was he who wrote his own book, the grammar and spelling might be flawed, after all not being able to graduate from a university. His side would be more entertaining, as he himself was exactly Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 20. The Outsiders Book Report While reading The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, It was as if I took a time travel to the 1960s. The book gave me a clear insight to the past. Unlike other books i've read, The Outsiders has its own unique content. It was new to me, how the content of the book is not a modern cliche book. Hinton's word choice creates an interesting book where it felt as if it was non–fiction than young–adult fiction. I like this book because the author made something extraordinary by stating what's right in front of him rather than creating fairy tale or fantasy . The theme of the novel is that one's culture and background doesn't defy Him/herself . In other words, getting involved with a gang or group doesn't mean you're not different. For example, Ponyboy is in a gang , The Greasers, and does things like mug and snatch like the other members in the group. That doesn't stop him from having a different personality than the others. Another theme in the novel is the power of brotherhood. This is a sub–theme because it's not confronted to the readers until the end of the novel. On page 176, Sodapop Curtis said, " We ought to be able to stick together against everything if we don't have each other we don't have anything." This quote struck out to me because throughout the novel, I detected the...show more content... Society had a different outlook about social classes and violence. On page 167, Ponyboy said, " He looked a little nervous, I wished they'd let him have a cigarette." This quote shows that both Socs and greasers use cigarettes to calm down and escape from reality which is odd because cigarettes are the cause for many health issues. The book is different to modern world due to this. After finishing this book, I have learned that friendship is something you have to respect , keep, and cherish. Also, sometimes when you can't cope with your family, you will always find a way to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
