Guest presentation for ELI Course | Humanizing Online Teaching and Learning
https://events.educause.edu/eli/courses/webinar/2017/humanizing-online-teaching-and-learning
4. I will share examples using technology
that have contributed to social learning
through:
building online presence
connecting with students
helping students connect with each other
encouraging collaboration and co-learning
synchronously and asynchronously
18. Scenarios
• Creating 'about me' videos to get to know
each other - start with fun facts
• Capturing career aspirations, skills to be
developed
• Ongoing reflective learning diary
19. Group Chat
Google Hangouts
By using interactive video based tools the
experience of distance learning students
can be improved - "I no longer feel alone"
being a telling comment from one
student. Another said "Being able to see
our tutor and peers was great!"
First year students used Google
Hangouts or Skype, which they
captured using screencast-o-matic and
embedded in to their individual blogs to
reflect upon their contribution.
Group Skype
20. Scenarios
Making the suggestion students meet for
'virtual coffee outside class time
Virtual office hours for 'one to one' meetings
Groupwork meetings combining with Google
Apps for collaborative work
24. Scenarios
Ask students to:
• Contribute (with you) to create an
annotated bibliography
(Education version - class groups)
• Search for and follow other bookmarked
lists. Then share with peers
28. Scenario
Whilst a synchronous activity, students can
work together to comment upon a video of
your choice. This 'video dialogue' can be
stimulated by your own questions and replies
to comments.
The vialogue can then be saved and
embedded in a website, blog or VLE.
30. Scenarios
Ask students to present their posters as a
slideshow (each section becomes a slide).
Embed in your website, blog or VLE.
Hold a virtual online conference. Share
presentations via SlideShare and LinkedIn.
36. Scenarios
Ask students to
• curate resources for a project
• useful tools to organise their learning
• create a collaborative newsletter
• add their viewpoint using comments to
articles
37. …there are a still a few obstacles yet to overcome
Whilst tech is getting easier and more intuitive…
