Isometric View of
Combination of Solids
Cylinder placed over Square block
Drawing Steps By:
SUBIN B MARKOSE
Question
• Draw the isometric view of a cylinder of base
diameter 40 mm and height 50 mm resting
centrally over a square block of side 60 mm.
Step 1
• Draw the front and top view of the combination as
per the dimensions given.
• Mark the dimensions.
• Name the edges properly.
Step 2
• Draw the isometric axes and plot the point 'b'.
• Taking dimensions from top view, complete the box
a-b-c-d.
Step 3
• Now we have to take vertical height.
• Draw a vertical line = 60 mm from point 'c' as
shown.
Step 4
• Similarly draw vertical lines of same length from
corners a,b,d.
• Then join the end points of all the vertical lines.
• Top side of block is drawn now and name it e-f-g-
h.
• Now isometric view of square block is completed.
Step 5
• Now we have to start constructing the cylinder
over square block.
• For this, focus on top view of the cylinder, it is a
circle.
• Enclose the circle inside a box and name it 1-2-3-
4.
•This circle will be seen as an ellipse in
isometric view.
Step 6
• We have to draw the box 1-2-3-4 on the top side
of block.
•For this, focus on point '2' on top view.
•Draw a horizontal line through Point '2'
and mark point 'x'.
•Draw a vertical line through Point '2'
and mark point 'y'.
Step 7
• Plot points 'x' & 'y' on to isometric axes.
• Draw parallel lines thorough them as shown in the
images.
• Point of intersection of these two will be point '2'.
• Refer how point '2' is plotted.
Step 8
• Similarly take equal distances on other corners and
complete the box 1-2-3-4.
• Refer the image clearly.
Step 8
• Now we have to draw the ellipse, which is the
isometric view of the circle ( top view of cylinder ).
• Steps of drawing ellipse are not explained as it is
given in previous presentations.
• Steps are drawn in order so refer the images very
clearly and if doubt exists, please refer previous
presentations.
Step 9
• Base ellipse is complete now.
• Another ellipse has to be drawn which represents
the isometric view of top side of the cylinder.
• For this draw a vertical line=height of cylinder= 50
mm from point '3'.
Step 10
• Similarly draw vertical lines of same length from
other corners 1,2 & 4.
• Join the end points of the vertical lines. We got a
box in top side as shown.
Step 11
• To construct an ellipse on the top side of the box,
simply project the points on base ellipse and join
them.
• All the images are drawn lightly since these are
construction lines. Look carefully.
Step 12
• Now we got the top ellipse.
• Join top and bottom ellipse to get the isometric
view of the cylinder.
Step 13
•Highlight the figure as shown.
• This step is very important since now we will be
getting a clarity in the drawing.
• Always highlight only the part of solid asked in the
question. This will help you to score better.
Comments
• Certain edges are drawn very lightly. Please refer
images carefully.
• Please practice and learn.
• Drawing ellipse has already been explained in
previous presentations.
• Any doubt, feel free to rectify.

  • 13. Step 5 • Now we have to start constructing the cylinder over square block. • For this, focus on top view of the cylinder, it is a circle. • Enclose the circle inside a box and name it 1-2-3- 4. •This circle will be seen as an ellipse in isometric view.

  • 15. Step 6 • We have to draw the box 1-2-3-4 on the top side of block. •For this, focus on point '2' on top view. •Draw a horizontal line through Point '2' and mark point 'x'. •Draw a vertical line through Point '2' and mark point 'y'.

  • 28. Step 9 • Base ellipse is complete now. • Another ellipse has to be drawn which represents the isometric view of top side of the cylinder. • For this draw a vertical line=height of cylinder= 50 mm from point '3'.
