Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders
Eating disorders are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and the
physiological well–being of the afflicted (Welch, Ghader, & Swenne, 2015). Studies concerning
eating disorders are showing more and more frequency in younger age groups and especially in
those who are athletes, diabetics, and obese adolescents (Martin & Golden, 2014). This tells us that
symptoms of eating disorders can be caught and treated during adolescence. Today, many schools
have very little class time dedicated to educating students about healthy lifestyles. Little, to no
information is given about what eating disorders are or how to avoid the development of one. If
information is provided about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a video
or discussed briefly in a textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the development
of eating disorders. Many studies have shed some light on the issue of eating disorders by
conducting surveys and developing new programs to use in schools. The primary prevention of
eating and body image problems among young people, and in particular, adolescents, is emerging as
one of the most desirable achievements in contemporary health and nutrition (O 'Dea J. , 2000).
Primary prevention programs, and better education in general, for the prevention of eating disorders
and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs to be established in schools. The purpose of this paper is
to propose more education

Eating Disorders
Many people, both women and men of all ages, suffer from the psychological disorder, eating. Up to
thirty million people in the world suffer from some kind of an eating disorder. There a two types of
eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia, and have several methods of treatment. What is an eating
disorder, and what do they cause? Eating disorders are maladaptive and very serious interruptions in
eating. They can come in the form of overeating, or not eating enough, they are often accompanied
by severe misconceptions about body weight and body image. Eating disorders typically begin when
the patient is a young adolescent, but can occur before then or many years after, they may be gentic,
or occur on their own. Whatever age and reasons these behaviors start, it is still critical, and the
patient needs to seek help immediately. The first type of eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, otherwise
known as anorexia, is life–threatening weight loss. There are four main key points when observing
the patterns of an anorexic person. The first being that the patient will not keep a normal body
weight, they urge to get that number to a painstakingly low digit, and won't bring it back up. That
brings us to our second key sign. During this stage, the patient will not gain any weight in fear of
seeing larger, mainly three digit numbers is severe cases, or becoming fat. Third, the patient, most
often female, has the wrong image of her body. When looking in the mirror,

Introduction
The EDI, as a multifaceted instrument and as one of the most widely used assessment tools,
provides a standardized rating scale, which is used internationally (Garner, 1984). Eating disorder
specialists frequently use EDI with adolescents who experience symptoms and present
psychological features of eating disorders. According to the user's manual, EDI–3 asses associated
risk factors and outcomes of treatment and it can be used to assess the DSM–IV–TR diagnoses of
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (Garner, 2004).
However, the EDI–3 does not assess Binge Eating Disorders (Atlas, 2007). The EDI–3 is
appropriate to use with females ages 13–53 (2007). In addition, EDI is used internationally not only
in clinical settings but in research too (Clausen, Rosenvinge, Friborg, & Rokkedal, 2011). EDI is
constructed to inventory the severity of eating disorders (Garner, 1984).
Test History
Test 2– Eating Disorder Inventory
The initial eating disorder inventory identification test was developed by David M. Garner in 1983
(Clausen, Rosenvinge, Friborg, & Rokkedal, 2011). Since 1983, there have been two revisions. The
first revision is Eating Inventory Two (EDI–2), which was completed in 1991. The second revision
is Eating inventory three (EDI–3), which was completed in 2004 (Clausen et al., 2011). There are
two additional forms of EDI–3: EDI–3 Symptom Checklist (EDI–3 SC) and EDI–3 Referral Form
(EDI–3RF). The EDI–3 SC is a self

Eating Disorders And Their Brains
Eating Disorders In US today, over 30 million men, women, and children suffer from an eating
disorder. Research shows that 42% of first– to third–grade girls want to be thinner, and 81% of 10–
year–olds are afraid of being fat. In fact, most kids with eating disorders began their disordered
eating between the ages of 11 and 13. (Eating Dis.3) The most common eating disorders are;
Anorexia, Binge eating, and Bulimia. Why do people resort to something so life threatening? Many
people are turning towards eating disorders because they don't accept who they are. Eating disorders
are a mental illness that can have dangerous effects on the human body, and several people are
involved in this bad habit. In some cases, people can't necessarily stop the disorder because it is in
their genetics. Other times, it's the person choice on whether or not they'd like to open this hurtful
portal to darkness. Scientists have done many studies on women involved in eating disorders and
their brains function different than a healthy woman. Eating disorders aren 't just a mental illness,
there are a physical illness as well that often destroy the body 's normal function. It may start as just
starting to eat less or more, but it can have a dramatic effect to your body that it increases and gets
worse. People who are going through puberty and changes on facial and body appearances often
lean towards eating disorders because they want to be an ideal image that it advertised everywhere
in media.

Summary Of Eating Disorders
The question that I want to address is how psychosocial development/impairments can affect the
development of an eating disorder in regards to gender. Psychosocial development is mental illness
caused or influenced by life experiences, as well as maladjusted cognitive and behavioral processes.
An eating disorder is a "serious medical illnesses marked by severe disturbances to a person's eating
behaviors" (NIH, 2018). Signs of this disorder include obsessions with food, body weight, and shape
may be signs of an eating disorder. The disorder can affect the individual's physical and mental
health. Eating disorders are biologically–influenced medical illnesses and involve significant
psychosocial factors. This topic is important because eating ... Show more content on

However, social interaction anxiety, body surveillance, internalization of media ideals and
attachment anxiety heightened the primary body dissatisfaction–eating disorder symptomatology
relationship (Dakanalis, 2013). Similarly, Moser found that there was no difference in total FAST
scores or in specific domains between two groups but that the purgative group showed more severe
functional impairment than the restrictive group in the financial domain (Moser, 2013). In the
domains of comorbidity with mood disorders, depressive symptoms, or general psychiatric
symptoms, between the two ED subtypes, there were no differences seen between the two groups.
This study concluded between purgative and restrictive types of eating disorders there were
similarities in overall functioning and in autonomy, cognition, work, interpersonal relationships, and
leisure (Moser, 2013). Both studies concluded that various psychosocial variables including several
risk and protective factors interact with body dissatisfaction and negatively impact a women with
eating disorders. These article only examined eating disorders in females, but did give a singular
insight into how psychosocial impairments are seen in females with eating disorders.Although both
research studies has a much smaller sample sizes, the results were still the

Eating disorder is a psychological disorder that causes a person to have disturbances in their eating
habits. The main types of eating disorder are Anoerexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating
disorder. Anorexia nervosa is defined as "nervous loss of appetite which can be mainly characterized
by denial of hunger, fear of weight gaining and also distorted image. On the other hand, in bulimia
disorder one experiences binge–purge syndrome with the symptoms of eating in large amount at the
short period of time followed by purging activities like vomiting, obsessive exercising. Similarly,
binge eating disorder is consuming large amount of food without the purging. People having these
kinds of disorder can have physical problems and sometimes ... Show more content on

According to him, both nature and nurture equally contributes in causing the psychological disorder.
Freud proposed three parts of personality i.e Id, ego and superego. He divided these three parts as
conscious and unconscious mind. Id is present at birth which is heredity and ego and superego
develops as nurture. Id and superego are unconscious mind with the conscious mind i.e ego. The
conflict creates anxiety which can be handled by the ego's use of defense mechanism. The defense
mechanism functions as a controlling mechanism to protect the ego which sometimes leads to cause
the mental disorder. Mental illness is caused by the undetermined and unconscious struggles in the
mind. As a nature side, Freud explains instinctive behavior (aggression) and the society in which
person in raised is nurture. In psychological disorder like eating disorder, person is nurture in the
society with people of different views. Sometimes, a person is judged and teased by the society,
peers, and relatives on the physical appearance which forces them to get a perfect and attractive
body that develops as an "aggression". This can cause eating disorder as a person is forced to diet
and do excess exercise. The psychodynamic theory is discontinous because psychosexual and
psychosocial development takes place in the

Eating Disorders And Eating Disorder
The topic of my research is an affliction that affects people called an "eating disorder." Why did you
choose this topic? I chose this topic because it is a very prevalent issue in our society today, and a
close friend of mine is suffering from an eating disorder. What question(s) did you want to answer
or what was your hypothesis regarding this topic? As mammals, there is no chance of escaping the
need to consume food in everyday life. However, when it comes to food there can be a major
concern of eating too much or eating too little. Doing either of those for an extended period of time
involves the risk of developing an eating disorder and due to the increased awareness of eating
disorders, has become a headline topic in mainstream media. The questions I wanted to answer as a
result of my research include: 1. What exactly classifies as an eating disorder, and how do you
diagnose it? 2. Does it affect genders differently? 3. How does one recognize an eating disorder? 4.
What are the health effects? 5. What are the treatments for an eating disorder? List the main findings
or conclusions that were discussed and that you learned about by doing this assignment: (This is the
main part of your report where you explain the research and its findings.) What Is An Eating
Disorder? An eating disorder is a physiological illness that involves excessive eating habits. The

What is the definition of an eating disorder? Why does it affect so many of American young teens?
Many individuals would believe that an eating disorders are a fad diet or an experiment to lose
weight, but they are serious complex disorders that can take many years to recover from. Per statics
eating disorders affect five percent of women and one percent of men in the United States. The
South Carolina Mental Health Department reports that five to ten percent of girls with eating
disorders will die within ten years of having the disease ("Eating Disorder Statistics," 2006).

Eating Disorders : Eating, Bulimia, And Anorexia
There are many different types of eating disorders such as binge–eating, bulimia, and anorexia. All
three eating disorders are very similar, but they are also differ with the issue they cause. Eating
disorders can be harmful to a persons' body because when they keep vomiting, it causes certain parts
of the body to deteriorate over time. Each disorder has many symptoms, causes, warning signs, and
health problems. All disorders differ with the way they affect people and how the person is treated.
Binge–eating disorder consists of eating a larger amount of food within a short amount of time.
People that have the binge–eating disorder do not try to remove the calories that they intake, they
may try dieting or eating normal sized meal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some interesting facts about binge–eating is that it affects more women than it does men. Around 60
percent of females struggle with this disorder, whereas; 40 percent of males struggle with it. This
disorder affects people from all demographic backgrounds, and two–thirds of people who deal with
this disorder are obese. People who are dealing with binge–eating disorder are often normal or a
little overweight. They often suffer with distress and guilt, and a low quality of life that stems from
anxiety and depression. Bulimia nervosa, also known as bulimia, is a serious, potentially life–
threatening eating disorder in which the person secretly eats food. There are two different types of
Bulimia that include Purging and Nonpurging. Purging bulimia is where a people regularly vomits
or uses laxatives after eating a large amount of food. Nonpurging bulimia is where a people uses
different methods such as fasting or excessive exercise to remove calories in order to prevent
gaining weight. Some symptoms of bulimia are being worried about body and gaining weight,
uncontrollable eating, feeling discomfort after eating, large binge eating episode, vomit or exercise
after eating, misusing laxatives, restricting calories, and excessive use of dietary supplements. The
exact cause of bulimia are unknown, but some doctors say that it is caused by

Eating Disorders In Society
Unfortunately, there are many people throughout every corner of the world that are pressured into
being the perfect image of a woman in today's society. This causes stress and the turn to eating
disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binging; however, society has the power to prevent this.
These are caused by disappointment in one's body shape, and this disappointment can be triggered
by depression, hateful comments, or the promotion of the importance of physical appearance. Eating
disorders are extremely dangerous to one's health, alter one's mind to lead to depression, and can be
prevented by minimizing certain factors in society. The influences leading to eating disorders should
be discouraged, if not demolished because of these reasons. ... Show more content on

There is a clear example of this in Rebecca Adams' article, "Jennifer Lawrence's Photoshop Job on
Flare Cover Makes the Internet Rounds." Jennifer Lawrence, a well–known actress, was featured on
the cover of Flare magazine, and she had to have her picture photoshopped to make her look more
appealing. The editors changed her bone structure, shaped her waist and hips, elongated her neck,
and even changed the color and shape of her hands. An already gorgeous actress still needed to be
refined so that her image fit the magazine's expectations. This pressures people, women especially,
into trying be the picture–perfect representation of society. Jennifer's perspective on this was shown
when she said, "The world has this idea that if you don't look like an airbrushed perfect model, you
have to see past it. You look how you look, you have to be comfortable. What are you going to do?
Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb" (Adams). Some people
might claim that photoshop is absolutely essential in the selling of the picture, but that is exactly the
point; not even models or celebrities are entirely good enough for the acceptance of society. It is
definite that the requirements society has for each individual causes stress and pressure for them to
be absolutely

The modeling industry has taken a toll on young girls across the world today. Models, magazines,
television even the radio advertise "thin is in." Because of this girls feel pressured that they need to
look a certain way in order to look good. People need to start realizing that you can be curvy and
still look excellent. Society needs to urge the fashion industry and media to stop portraying the
"perfect" skinny, toothpick image because it is causing a huge array of health related problems to
woman around the world.
The modeling industry finally had a wake–up call after models were dying of eating disorders.

People everywhere especially young girls, and women look at magazines and dream to one day look
like the models in the pictures. They do this because thin, beautiful women are what they are used to
seeing everywhere. There are rarely advertisements with curvy, real looking women on them. Plus
size models are also scarce and compared to the ultra skinny models, they are not looked up to.
What is happening to society? Size ¾ is no longer considered thin. There are double zeros and
negative sizes that are taking over the clothing racks. Changes need to be made with the media and
the fashion industry immediately. The rampage of being so thin that your rib cage is clearly seen and
you suffer from many health issues is not in. Thin is not in! Healthy, real looking girls and women
who are happy with their figures is what's in. Being active and enjoying a normal lifestyle is in.
There is no need to conform to the so called "perfect body image" when there truly is not one.
Psychologists say the fashion industry has gone too far in pushing dangerously thin image in that
women and even young girls try to imitate. In recent surveys 40% of first, second, and third graders
want to be thinner. 80% of ten year olds are concerned that they will become fat. 50% of children
ages eight through ten are unhappy with their current size and more than 50% of nine through

Essay On Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders in Today's World Eating disorders are alive and well in today's world and they are
a major problem. An eating disorder can look like a few different things, ranging from a severe
reduction of food intake to over eating to feelings of negativity towards your body shape or weight
(Lehigh University). While some disorders can only be found in specific age groups, races, etc.,
eating disorders can be found amongst all and it does not necessarily have to be pointed towards
food (Lehigh University). In fact, the four areas primarily affect eating disorders: psychological,
interpersonal, social, and biological. I am going to talk about three specific eating disorders:
anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Keep in mind that
there could be other eating disorders out there that are not found and classified just yet (Lehigh
University).

Binge Eating Disorder
How Common are Eating Disorders? There are so many statistics regarding eating disorders. In
general, there are about 30 million men and women who have some type of eating disorder and only
about 1 out of 10 men and women will receive some treatment for their disorder. Because of this, it
is no surprise that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate out of all the mental illnesses
(National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2015). The National

Introduction
High school is a revealing and altering time for adolescents. Emotions are developing, hormones are
running wild and stress is at an all time high. An overwhelming period of life can be pushed over the
edge when the development of an eating disorder is recognized. An eating disorder is described as
any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits, and
has becoming a major concern regarding high school teens and adolescents. Eating disorders among
any teens are earth shattering and complicated concerns, but there is one particular group of
adolescents that eating disorders are detrimental to. Athletes are defined as a person who is trained

There is strong and consistent evidence that eating disorders are prevalent in sports and especially in
weight sensitive sports such as endurance, weight category and aesthetic sports as well as jumping
events (Currie). Because these activities often include a profound awareness of both body image and
weight, athletes often have a significant sense of their bodies and seek ways to control them. In
addition to the mental aspect, sports provide athletes with a competitive environment where eating
disorders can breed. Sports coaches can also contribute to the eating disorder risk. A supportive
environment which encourages athletes to make the best of themselves is to be preferred over one
where criticism and bullying (especially in relation to weight and body composition) are the norm
(Currie). Constant belittling and animadversion places a serious strain on an athlete's mental status,
leaving room for an eating disorder to develop. The emphasis on reducing body weight or fat
percentage to enhance sport performance can result in weight pressures on student–athletes from
coaches, parents, or even teammates. These increase the risk of restrictive dieting, as well as the use
of pathogenic weight loss methods such as fluid restriction or the use of diuretics. Another aspect of
sports and athletics that increase the prevalence of eating disorders is revealing uniforms. Certain
uniforms increase

"The eating disorder is a very jealous and abusive partner. It requires a lot of devotion in the extent
that you have to devote yourself to tending to the anorexia. There 's not a lot of time left over for
adult life," was stated by Dr. Doug Bunnell, a specialist in eating disorders. Eating disorders effect a
variety of people. Age, race, and gender aren't role playing keys in eating disorders. Not everyone
gets an eating disorder, but if they do then, it will more than likely destroy their lives. The person
with the eating disorder is affected and so are their families, and friends. Even though there are
hundreds of programs to help with eating disorders, thousands of people still suffer from them.
There is an estimated eight million Americans that have an eating disorder, seven million of them
are women and one million are men (MDH). There are three common types of eating disorders
anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Anorexia nervous which is mostly called anorexia, is an eating
disorder generalized by extremely low body weight, fear of gaining weight, and a distorted self–
image of their body's (WebMD). With anorexia nervosa people will limit the amount of food they
consume, and try to control their food intake by vomiting after they eat, using laxatives, or enemas,
and by exercising an excessive amount. With bulimia when the person will eat enormous amount of
food then try to emesis the food up or try to exercise to get rid of the calories they just consumed.

Thus, the body is forced to slow down all of its processes to conserve energy ." (NEDA. "Health

Eating Disorders Are Responsible For The Rise Of Eating...
Since the 1950s the cases of eating disorders have been increasing, especially in westernized
countries (Wade, Keski–Rahkonen, & Hudson, 2011). 1950 was the year where having curves was
accepted, but this view changed when societal culture started to become more important to the
average person. Culture is comprised of how people think, behave, and work in a particular society
(Merriam–webster's collegiate dictionary, 2015). Societal culture is comprised of athletic influence,
media, and the fashion industry. All of the societal culture factors are responsible for the rise of
eating disorders in young adults. In 2011, it was found that 20 million women and 10 million men
suffer from eating disorders at some point in their lives (Wade et. al, 2011). Eating disorders are not
always considered an important mental illness, but due to the high number of cases they should be
because they can lead to health problems including slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and severe
dehydration. These side effects can lead to death if not treated properly which is why eating
disorders should be looked at as a clinical disease. Athletics To illustrate how societal culture plays a
crucial role in the rise of eating disorders, influence from parents and coaches of athletes were
looked at. Eating disorders in athletics have been growing alongside the growth of eating disorders
in those not involved in sports. The overall cause of eating disorders in athletes is the pressure
society puts on them.

People sometimes assume that when a person is dieting that it may turn into an eating disorder but
that's not always the case.
Some women strive to be skinny and wish they were anorexic and there are there are people out
there who help them achieve that goal Women are literally starving themselves to death to look
"Beautiful". They fail to recognize the dangers of the disease. Anorexia is not about feeling thin,
proud and beautiful; if you take the time to listen to an anorexic you will hear that they feel fat,
unattractive and inadequate (Goldsmith, 2014, Pg.1). They are scared and trapped (Goldsmith, 2014,
Pg.1). Anorexia is not the type of disease that one can just simply recover quickly from. Anorexics'
minds are not their own; they are possessed by thoughts of weight, body image, food and calories
(Goldsmith, 2014, Pg.1). Anorexia isn't just hard on the person experiencing it but also the people
around them. While anorexia is characterized by the different situations, bulimia is a very different
disorder. Bulimia nervosa involves eating large amounts of food in a short amount of time and then
tries to prevent weight gain by getting rid of the food (Bulimia Nervosa Fact Sheet, 2014, Pg.1).
This disorder may be one of the unhealthiest ways to get rid of wanted weight gain.

"There are over 30 million people in the United States of all different ages and genders suffering

pressure from today's society to be thin and things are starting to get out of hand. How much longer
will it be until skipping meals becomes what is normal across the entire country, starting with
today's teens? Girls from such a young age are under the influence that being thin is beautiful, they

young girls that grow up loving food and eating a lot of it turn to hate eating because of what society

Eating Disorders And Eating Disorders
A relapse, simply put, is a period of deterioration after a period of recovery. Sometimes relapse
creeps up on you over time while other times it seems to explode in your face and take over your life
in one fell swoop. It can happen for a variety of reasons from boredom to grief, trauma, or any other
trigger. The tricky part of relapse is that many people get used to these periods of deterioration and
struggle, accepting that this is their ultimate reality while feeling completely defeated and
powerless.
In regards to eating disorders specifically, a relapse may include these signs or symptoms:
skipping meals, starting a new diet, becoming unusually rigid about eating (such as the time of day,
type of food, or location), avoidance of specific foods for no reason, and/or labeling foods weighing

Markehl Murray Mrs. Miller 4th period 6 January, 2016 Eating Disorders In US today, over 30
million men, women, and children suffer from an eating disorder. The most common eating
disorders are; Anorexia, Binge eating, and Bulimia. Why do people resort to something so life
threatening? Many people are turning towards eating disorders because they don't accept who they
are. Eating disorders are a mental illness that can have dangerous effects on the human body, and
several people are involved in this bad habit. In some cases, you can't necessarily stop the disorder
because it is in your genetics. Other times, it's the person choice on whether or not they'd like to
open this hurtful portal to darkness. Scientists have done many studies on women involved in eating
disorders and their brains function different than a healthy woman. Eating disorders aren 't just a
mental illness, there are a physical illness as well that often destroy the body 's normal function. It
may start as just starting to eat less or more, but it can have a dramatic effect to your body that it
increases and gets worse. People who are going through puberty and changes on facial and body
appearances often lean towards eating disorders because they want to be an ideal image that it

"An eating disorder is about anxiety and control and healing from trauma and food and weight are
just the tools of destruction" (Floyd, Mimms, & Yelding, 2008). An eating disorder is defined as a
severe disturbance in eating behavior. An eating disorder, as defined by our text book for class, is
psychological disturbances that lead to certain physiological changes and serious health
complications. The three most common and most easily identifiable forms of eating disorders
include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. While most people who have
eating disorders tend to be women from white middle–class upper–class families, eating disorders
span social class, gender, race, and ethnic backgrounds (Floyd, Mimms, & Yelding, Eating
Disorders, 2008). It is believed that most eating disorders develop as a way to handle stress. People
with eating disorders tend to have low self–esteem, feelings of helplessness, depression, and
perfectionism. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 90 percent of people
with eating disorders are adolescent girls and young women and the death rate for eating disorders is
about one in ten people. Causes of eating disorders can include genetic, biological, social,
psychological, and environmental factors (Schiff, 2016). If a person has a first–degree relative with
anorexia, that person is ten times more likely to develop anorexia than a person who does not have a

The Behavior Of Eating Disorders
Introduction In today 's society, teenagers desire the stereotypical "perfect body." Most girls want to
be tiny and twig like, just like the models portrayed in the media. Frequently, the desire to become
thin becomes an obsession and girls perceive thinness as being an essential trait. The obsession over
weight has led to an increasing number of individual 's who have developed eating disorders due to
low self–esteem or other related issues. According to a 2002 survey, 1.5% of Canadian women aged
15–24 years have had an eating disorder. Although, children are influenced by numerous external
factors that are destroying their bodies, parents play the most significant role in the avoidance of
eating disorders. During a child 's life, on no occasion should food be used as a reward or
punishment. In order for a child to have a healthy life physically, socially, emotionally and
financially parents must be role models as a child is heavily influence by their parents. Factors such
as overall appearance, the ability to form a family, anxiety, academic performance, and the ability to
financially support oneself are all influenced by the support children receive from their parents.
Grocery shopping together, eating together, encouraging new interests and avoiding comments that
directly target physical appearance are essential steps parents should consider. "An eating disorder is

Those with eating disorders believe that they don 't fit in with the rest of society. In order for the
depression to improve achieving a certain a certain body type will ease the way they feel. While
eating disorders may first "appear to be solely about food and weight preoccupations", people
suffering from eating disorders often try to use food and the control of food to cope with feelings
and emotions that may otherwise seem overwhelming ("Barbee J.G"2). Being able to control
something in their lives make them feel better, therefore, makes them feel less discouraged. Those
diagnosed mentally feel lonely, and assume that nobody can relate with them. Depression is a way
that many people cope with their eating disorders. Having an eating disorder modifies the way
others view each other. People now believe that what is shown on the internet is the ideal body

unrealistic body ideals in people with and without eating disorders. Success and worth are often

Eating Disorders Eating disorders are sweeping this country and are rampant on junior high, high
school, and college campuses. These disorders are often referred to as the Deadly Diet, but are often
known by their more popular names: anorexia or bulimia. They affect more than 20% of females
between the age of thirteen and forty. It is very rare for a young female not to know of someone with
an eating disorder. Statistics show that at least one in five young women have a serious problem
with eating and weight (Bruch, 25). The Deadly Diet appears to be a mostly female problem. Eating
disorders are most common in the middle to upper middle class families. Currently, the incidence is

The regular dieter is in control of the diet. The Deadly Dieter is controlled by the diet. There are five
basic types of Deadly Dieter. Although there are probably as many variations of these basic types as
there are people in the world, all eating disorders fall into one of the Deadly Diets. Fasting. This
type of Deadly Dieter will often try to exist on only 500 calories per day, even though most
nutritionists claim that a starvation diet is no lower than about 1200 calories a day. This person can
get so upset over any "extra" calories that they begin to see calories where there are virtually none.
For example, some Deadly Dieters are afraid to chew one piece of gum for fear they would take in
too many calories. Binging. People who just binge, and consequently are obese, can also be called
Deadly Dieters. They, too, are out of control. Their "diet" is constantly on their minds. It begins to
kill them (not only in terms of their health, but socially and personally). Binging–Purging. These
people often begin their Deadly Diet as fasters. They soon learn that fasting also cuts them off from
most social functions. In our society it is rare when people get together and don't have some type of
food available. The solution to "being thin" and yet being able to eat is to get rid of the food they
have eaten. The most common form of purging is vomiting. A much less common method is the
overuse of laxatives. Fasting–Purging. This form of the

Anorexia slows and prevents growth and stops pubertal development. Suffering from anorexia
before the age of twelve is not very common. A girl before the pubertal stage suffering with the
disease will not go through puberty. She will physically remain in the body of a child. She will not
develop hips, breasts, or buttocks. Her hormones will also remain as those of a child and will have
no sexual interest. Fortunately physical development and normal body shape will return upon

an obsession with food, refusing to eat, forgetting or difficulty in remembering things, obsessive–
compulsive behavior, low–self–esteem, loneliness, social isolation, withdrawn behavior, self–hatred,
and depression (www.umm.edu/Anorexia nervosa). People who suffer with anorexia may start to

The Prevalence Of Eating Disorders
Though eating disorders are inextricably linked to genetics, the environment also largely determines
them. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and most recently Binge eating are three central types of
eating disorders cited in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Eating Disorders (DSM–5, 2015). The
prevalence of eating disorders is fundamentally a result of Western cultures construction of thinness
as an ideal form of beauty. Eating disorders are often discounted as a myth of white privilege. Those
in developing countries suffer from malnourishment; so the notion that people willingly restrict their
diet is inconceivable to them. However, developing an eating disorder is simply one way of dealing
with an issue (actually avoiding) that may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the right support and guidance, each of us encompasses the power to restore positive self–
schemas.
Although a small percentage of the population are cited as having had an eating disorder, majority of
the population has been perplexed with their body image. Our aspiration to be perfect is exploited to
sell products and reap profits in the commercial industry. For example, infomercials on cosmetic
surgery encourage men and women at a high price to engage in dangerous weight loss practices to
receive immediate results. These include liposuction, tummy tucks, or extreme muscle
enhancements advertisements. Here, marketers seek to exploit your insecurities and provide you
with solutions (at a steep price). The cost is not only financial, but a deathly one. For instance,
clients with Anorexia Nervosa starve themselves until they are skin and bones and those with
Bulimia Nervosa purge and vomit to compensate.
If binge eating behaviours are common among adolescents, how do psychologists distinguish
between a person who indulges and one with a clinical disorder? For instance, those who engage in
four to seven episodes of inappropriate compensatory behaviours perk week would be diagnosed
with a moderate form of binge eating disorder (3, 2015). I consider myself someone who binge eats
a few times a month, but I don't believe I fit into the mild quota either. I typically binge eat when I

Eating Disorders And Eating Disorder
An eating disorder is an illness that causes serious disturbances to your everyday diet, such as eating
extremely small amounts of food or severely overeating. A person with an eating disorder may have
started out just eating smaller or larger amount of food, but as some point, the urge to eat less or
more has gotten out of control. Severe distress or concern about body weight or shape may also
signal an eating disorder. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and
a binge–eating disorder. Eating disorders do not discriminate on whom it may affect. Everyone is
susceptible to the life altering disease. Men and women, straight or gay, old or young, black or
white, all are able to be a victim. Media is more commonly known to push for the practices of an
eating disorder. We live in a society that reinforces the idea to be happy and successful we must be
thin. Today, you cannot read a magazine or newspaper, turn on the television, listen to the radio, or
shop at the mall without being blatantly or subconsciously given the message that fat is bad. Eating
disordered behavior can be seen as a defense mechanism, in many cases a way to express something
that the individual has not found another way to express. Much like how alcoholics depend on
alcohol, individuals with eating disorders like bulimia or compulsive overeating syndrome us
binging or purging as a way of coping with emotions and feelings that they cannot control.

Eating Disorders
Even though eating disorders are less prevalent in society today than they have been in the past, they
are still one of the most diagnosed mental illnesses today. These three illnesses have short term as
well as long term effects that can leave a damaging toll on the patients' lives and are very hard to
overcome. This is shown through not only the characteristics of Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa,
Binge–eating Disease, but also through the psychological and physical harm these diseases leave on
the body.
History
Eating disorders have been charted throughout history; some of the oldest discoveries come from as
far back as 700 B.C. many cultures used imbedded the traits of eating disorders without knowing.
These traits were used in terms of medicine, religion, and at times of celebration. For example, the
ancient Egyptians drew hieroglyphics of their practices of vomiting. They believed that by vomiting
for three days out of the month that they would avoid illness. Another example of ancient practices
is found in the culture of the Romans. Around the time of Caesar's rule (700 A.D.), wealthy romans
would throw feasts, when they started to become full they would go to a vomitorium to purge, then
they would return to their feasts to once again overindulge. The last examples are the women of
Italy. To show their devotion to their religion these women would expose themselves to extreme
means of torture. One of the most famous icons of these actions is Saint

Effects Of Binge Eating On Eating Disorders
Purging Disorder is characterized by recurrent purging (self –induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives,
diuretics, or enemas) to control weight or shape in the absence of binge eating episodes. (Forney,
Haedt–Matt, & Keel, 2014) There are many behaviors associated with purging disorder such as
binge eating which leads to loss of control, or overeating in anorexia nervosa. (Goldschmidt et al.,
2015) Sociocultural and psychiatric factors are also believed to be important in the subject of weight
concerns, dieting, and unhealthy weight control practices. (Simone et al., 1996; Symth et al., 2008)
Binge eating is the strongest predictor of purging, loss of control, and overeating. Each were
associated with a higher likelihood of purging than non–pathological eating. (Goldschmidt et al.,
2015) Researchers had participants trained in how to record mood, stressful events, and behavior for
event contingent (completed after any eating episodes or anorexia nervosa behaviors such as binge
eating and purging), interval–contingent (nightly assessments) and signal–contingent recordings
(completed response to six daily semi–random prompts by investigators occurring every 2–3 hours.
Participants recorded their behaviors and results showed that purging (in the absence of loss of
control, and/overeating) may serve to regulate negative affect in a similar way as binge eating.
Purging may simply delay the experience of a negative mood. Both loss of control and overeating

Eating disorders are sadly a common occurrence in today's society. These disorders are broadly
defined as an illness where an individual develops irregular eating habits such as eating too much or
eating too little and is categorized as a mental illness. Also, some individuals may eat selectively
where they avoid eating specific foods. Eating disorders can bring about severe health complications
such as severe loss of weight or excess gaining of weight (Agras, 2010). An individual may suffer
from lack of immunity and if the problem is not addressed the consequences can be detrimental or
even fatal (Hudson, 2007). Eating disorders can develop during any developmental stage in life. The

There are two theories that fit to explain the occurrence of eating disorder; these are that either
emotions or biological defects are the cause of eating disorders. For instance, body dissatisfaction,
low self–esteem, and social pressures all lead to an emotional distress (Parke, 2009). Following this
distress, the child will tend to adopt a maladaptive coping strategy such as controlling their food
intake (Parke, 2009). On the other hand, scientists have also found that eating disorders can also be
biologically controlled where some children lack certain chemicals that control appetite, hunger, and
digestion. Often, these chemicals are lacking or they are unbalanced in a child who develops an

Understanding Eating Disorders
A large amount of research has been done on the subject of eating disorders and their causes. Many
eating disorders have proven to emerge during a young age and often serve as the foundations to
more serious problems like depression and even death. Although there are no real solutions to eating
disorders taking various medicines can help improve it, also going to therapy can help. Many people
think eating disorders are not important, but they are very important. Eight million of American
population suffers from eating disorders (seven million women, one million men). There are over
ten types of eating disorders from anorexia to rumination. The affect this has on women is becoming
a dramatic increase and what is being done is not enough. There are many types of eating disorders
such as anorexia, bulimia, and even night eating syndrome. The two that America suffers from are
anorexia and bulimia. These disorders and very serious in the female population. Many teen girls
suffer with anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder in which girls use starvation diets to try to lose
weight. These teens starve themselves until they are skeletal like and yet after that think they are
overweight. This leads to a type one depression which is highly dangerous for adolescents. This
appeared to be more in the white and Hispanic population instead of the Indian and black
population. Anorexia can hurt the digestion system and also affect the way you live or give birth.

Family systems have long been explored as a framework to understand and treat eating disorders.
Many existing explanations surmise that dysfunctional familial processes, most often involving
mothers and daughters, are associated with eating disturbance (Ringer & Crittenden, 2 007; Pollack
& Keaschuk, 2008). These family systems appear to be impaired by both oedipal and preoedipal
pathologies (Sours, 1980; Schulman, 2002). The purpose of this paper is to offer an explanation for
the role of identification in bulimia nervosa within both oedipal and preoedipal clients. Two cases
are presented to illustrate ways in which two women's identification with the maternal object
prevented expression of rage towards her, and instead turned against the self as the body was
attacked via bingeing and self–induced vomiting.
Eating disorders are serious psychological conditions with grave consequences for the individuals
affected by them. Eating disorders have a 20% mortality rate, with anorexia accounting for
approximately 5.1 deaths per 1000 persons and bulimia accounting for 1.74 deaths per 1000 persons

Dysfunctional mother–child dynamics, in particular, often appear at the root of many eating
disturbances. For example, women with anorexia and bulimia routinely describe their mothers as
both 'controlling' and 'needy.' Some research suggests that mothers of eating disordered women
suffer from their own issues related to unresolved trauma and loss (Beattie, 1988; Ringer &
Crittenden, 2007). While research on parental trauma and offspring eating pathology is scarce, there
are several indicators to support such a relationship given the positive correlation between parental
anxiety, parental over–intrusiveness, insecure attachment and eating disturbance (Chassler, 1997;

they really aren't. This usually deals with women or teenage girls mostly. They watch television,

But in order to do this we need to stop looking at other people and seeing what's missing from
ourselves. Stop buying the magazines and diet products, stop looking at the people in television and
movies, and just be us. We need to have more confidence in ourselves and show other people what
we can get in life without having the perfect body. People who have Anorexia Nervosa have this fear
of gaining weight so they result by not eating regularly or eat little amounts of food or not eating at
all. People see themselves as being fat but instead they are skinny. "Anorexics usually strive for
perfection" (www.mirror–mirror.org 1). So in doing this they feel like not eating anything can make
them look perfect and have the body they want. "The lack of food can cause a person to become
very thin, develop brittle hair and nails, dry skin, and a low pulse, become not able to stand the cold,
and suffer from constipation and sometimes diarrhea" (Hendrick 3). Anorexics put other people's
feelings in front of theirs. They also feel that the only thing in their lives is food and their weight and
this shows that they have low self–esteem for themselves. "Signs and symptoms are noticeable
weight loss, becoming withdrawn, excessive exercise, fatigue, always being cold, and muscle
weakness" (www.mirror–mirror.org 1). There are many more signs and symptoms for this illness.

The rise of clinically diagnosed cases of anorexia nervosa nervosa and bulimia nervosa nervosa are
increasing over the decades. According to Barlow,Durand and Stewart(2012), eating disorders are
found to be more prevalent among women, specifically between the ages of 12 and 25 years of age.
Prior to modern research, researchers saw eating disorders as a Western phenomenon due to the fact
that non western countries did not have such a wide variety of food available to them. This
perspective is now changing. Individuals in other countries (non–western) have been diagnosed with

With that said, women go to drastic measures such as following a strict diet in order to obtain the
"ideal body image". Eyal &Te'eni–Harari (2013), describe the ways in which the media portrays thin
people and bigger individuals. Heavier character on TV shows appear to be unattractive and or not
sexually desirable. Another key point that was brought from Eyal & Te'eni–Harari's (2013) article is
that women have been proven to unconsciously compare themselves to other women especially
those that they praise(models/celebrities). With this knowledge, it is fair to place some blame on the
media and its "thin unattainable ideal" and its influence on women and their low self–esteem which
in turn may cause an eating disorder (Eyal & Te'eni–Harari 2013). In the article "Eating and Body
Image Disturbances Across Cultures: A Review" by Soh, Touyz & Surgenor (2006), the authors
suggested the possibility of the Western culture influenced the Non– Western into adapting the
"ideal of thinness". For the reason that Non–Western cultures valued "thickness" prior to thinness.
They also stated that eating disorders other wise known as "non– eating disorders"have been
prevalent in other non–westernized countries for centuries (Soh et al., 2006). These researchers also
encountered a finding that suggested acculturation of western society played a large role in the non–

Since ancient times, the nature vs. nurture issues has been a huge debate. Even to this day,
psychology still debates over the nature vs. nurture issue. The Greek philosopher, Plato, supposed
that individuals inherit character and intelligence and that certain ideas are natural. Aristotle opposed
that there is nothing in the mind that does not first come through the senses. Charles Darwin theory
of natural selection added to the nature side of the debate that nature plays a role in what is already
embodied in us. (Myers, 2014, p. 5–6) The nature vs. nurture issue relates to the theme of this article
because nature and nurture both play a role in an individual developing an eating disorder. The
nature side of the eating disorder is an individual can inherit an eating disorder from a parent, or
grandparent. Whether it's the same eating disorder or not, an individual can develop one of the
eating disorders if an older relative had one. The nurture side of the eating disorder is society's idea
of a perfect body. Their idea of a perfect body is skinny and that makes young women and men feel
insecure about their body and they soon develop an eating disorder.
In addition to the environment being an influence on individuals developing an eating disorder,
eating disorders also have biological causes. According to Weir (2016), an important feature of the

anorexia nervosa include short–term weight gain. The overall prognosis for patients with anorexia is
dependant of wether treatment is received or not (Morris, J. & Twaddle, S., 2007). Some people
with eating disorders wait until the very last moment to even attempt to get help because they don't
see that they have a problem. Bulimia nervosa is a second eating disorder that needs attention drawn
to it. Bulimia was pretty much unknown before the mid 1970's (Dippel, N. & Becknal, K.,
1987). Bulimia consists of binging and purging (eating as much as possible and then throwing it up).
In a study that was conducted it was found that after bulimics had attempted several diets without
success, they then became aware of vomiting or laxatives as a means to weight loss (Herzog, 1982).
The symptoms of bulimia heave to do with preoccupations with food, weight, body image, and
ridding themselves of ingested food (Dippel, N. & Becknal, K., 1987). Most people throw up
because they feel guilty for consuming all the foods they know they shouldn't have. They vomit not
only to get rid of the food but to get rid of any unwanted feelings and emotions. Most patients begin

Eating Disorders Essay
Nutrition is both physically and mentally essential in daily lives. While people have knowledge of
severe underdeveloped nutrition in other parts of the world, they fail to realize the malnutrition that
may be affecting their own bodies. Every human needs a proper diet with nutrients which provide
the individual with energy, structure, and regulation to maintain the body (Smolin and Grosvenor
21–22). In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, a person must also have a healthy body image. However,
healthy body images have been rapidly decreasing in recent years. Both men and women are
constantly urged to fit a specific body image in order to be happy, admired, and loved. In countries
where a food shortage is a constant concern, obesity is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After a period of time, their extreme hunger overpowers their control and they eat a great amount of
food in a short period of time, which is referred to as binging. In fact, the name bulimia is taken
from the Greek words bous ("ox") and limos ("hunger"), implying hunger of such intensity that a
person can eat an entire ox (94). Since the great amount of food that they consume is not on their
strict diet plan to be thin, they become very fearful of a possible weight gain and they purge.
Induced vomiting, taking laxatives, and excessively exercising are examples of purging in
somebody with bulimia. After doing this they feel guilty, yet relieved. Once the person realizes that
they can eat basically anything that they want without gaining weight, they make it an ongoing
cycle. However, there are many side effects. These include constipation, dehydration, damaged tooth
enamel, breakage of stomach and esophagus lining, depression, and may even result in death (101).
Bulimia may be caused by pressure to achieve or to fit a certain body image. Since they often crave
and binge on foods rich in carbohydrates, the illness can be from an imbalance in the
neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain (Engel, Reiss, and Dombeck). There are many psychological
illnesses associated with this eating disorder and others. These include alcoholism, drug abuse, self–
injury, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder, and

Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders

  • 1. Eating Disorders Are Serious Disorders Eating disorders are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and the physiological well–being of the afflicted (Welch, Ghader, & Swenne, 2015). Studies concerning eating disorders are showing more and more frequency in younger age groups and especially in those who are athletes, diabetics, and obese adolescents (Martin & Golden, 2014). This tells us that symptoms of eating disorders can be caught and treated during adolescence. Today, many schools have very little class time dedicated to educating students about healthy lifestyles. Little, to no information is given about what eating disorders are or how to avoid the development of one. If information is provided about the prevention of eating disorders, it is usually in the form of a video or discussed briefly in a textbook. Schools are not doing enough in the fight against the development of eating disorders. Many studies have shed some light on the issue of eating disorders by conducting surveys and developing new programs to use in schools. The primary prevention of eating and body image problems among young people, and in particular, adolescents, is emerging as one of the most desirable achievements in contemporary health and nutrition (O 'Dea J. , 2000). Primary prevention programs, and better education in general, for the prevention of eating disorders and promotion of healthy lifestyles needs to be established in schools. The purpose of this paper is to propose more education ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Eating Disorders : Eating Disorder Eating Disorders Many people, both women and men of all ages, suffer from the psychological disorder, eating. Up to thirty million people in the world suffer from some kind of an eating disorder. There a two types of eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia, and have several methods of treatment. What is an eating disorder, and what do they cause? Eating disorders are maladaptive and very serious interruptions in eating. They can come in the form of overeating, or not eating enough, they are often accompanied by severe misconceptions about body weight and body image. Eating disorders typically begin when the patient is a young adolescent, but can occur before then or many years after, they may be gentic, or occur on their own. Whatever age and reasons these behaviors start, it is still critical, and the patient needs to seek help immediately. The first type of eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, otherwise known as anorexia, is life–threatening weight loss. There are four main key points when observing the patterns of an anorexic person. The first being that the patient will not keep a normal body weight, they urge to get that number to a painstakingly low digit, and won't bring it back up. That brings us to our second key sign. During this stage, the patient will not gain any weight in fear of seeing larger, mainly three digit numbers is severe cases, or becoming fat. Third, the patient, most often female, has the wrong image of her body. When looking in the mirror, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The And Of Eating Disorders Introduction The EDI, as a multifaceted instrument and as one of the most widely used assessment tools, provides a standardized rating scale, which is used internationally (Garner, 1984). Eating disorder specialists frequently use EDI with adolescents who experience symptoms and present psychological features of eating disorders. According to the user's manual, EDI–3 asses associated risk factors and outcomes of treatment and it can be used to assess the DSM–IV–TR diagnoses of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (Garner, 2004). However, the EDI–3 does not assess Binge Eating Disorders (Atlas, 2007). The EDI–3 is appropriate to use with females ages 13–53 (2007). In addition, EDI is used internationally not only in clinical settings but in research too (Clausen, Rosenvinge, Friborg, & Rokkedal, 2011). EDI is constructed to inventory the severity of eating disorders (Garner, 1984). Test History Test 2– Eating Disorder Inventory The initial eating disorder inventory identification test was developed by David M. Garner in 1983 (Clausen, Rosenvinge, Friborg, & Rokkedal, 2011). Since 1983, there have been two revisions. The first revision is Eating Inventory Two (EDI–2), which was completed in 1991. The second revision is Eating inventory three (EDI–3), which was completed in 2004 (Clausen et al., 2011). There are two additional forms of EDI–3: EDI–3 Symptom Checklist (EDI–3 SC) and EDI–3 Referral Form (EDI–3RF). The EDI–3 SC is a self ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Eating Disorders And Their Brains Eating Disorders In US today, over 30 million men, women, and children suffer from an eating disorder. Research shows that 42% of first– to third–grade girls want to be thinner, and 81% of 10– year–olds are afraid of being fat. In fact, most kids with eating disorders began their disordered eating between the ages of 11 and 13. (Eating Dis.3) The most common eating disorders are; Anorexia, Binge eating, and Bulimia. Why do people resort to something so life threatening? Many people are turning towards eating disorders because they don't accept who they are. Eating disorders are a mental illness that can have dangerous effects on the human body, and several people are involved in this bad habit. In some cases, people can't necessarily stop the disorder because it is in their genetics. Other times, it's the person choice on whether or not they'd like to open this hurtful portal to darkness. Scientists have done many studies on women involved in eating disorders and their brains function different than a healthy woman. Eating disorders aren 't just a mental illness, there are a physical illness as well that often destroy the body 's normal function. It may start as just starting to eat less or more, but it can have a dramatic effect to your body that it increases and gets worse. Freud proposed three parts of personality i.e Id, ego and superego. He divided these three parts as conscious and unconscious mind. Id is present at birth which is heredity and ego and superego develops as nurture. Id and superego are unconscious mind with the conscious mind i.e ego. • 13. Eating Disorders And Eating Disorder The topic of my research is an affliction that affects people called an "eating disorder." Why did you choose this topic? I chose this topic because it is a very prevalent issue in our society today, and a close friend of mine is suffering from an eating disorder. What question(s) did you want to answer or what was your hypothesis regarding this topic? As mammals, there is no chance of escaping the need to consume food in everyday life. However, when it comes to food there can be a major concern of eating too much or eating too little. Doing either of those for an extended period of time involves the risk of developing an eating disorder and due to the increased awareness of eating disorders, has become a headline topic in mainstream media. The questions I wanted to answer as a result of my research include: 1. What exactly classifies as an eating disorder, and how do you diagnose it? 2. Does it affect genders differently? 3. How does one recognize an eating disorder? 4. What are the health effects? 5. What are the treatments for an eating disorder? List the main findings or conclusions that were discussed and that you learned about by doing this assignment: (This is the main part of your report where you explain the research and its findings.) Jennifer Lawrence, a well–known actress, was featured on the cover of Flare magazine, and she had to have her picture photoshopped to make her look more appealing. The editors changed her bone structure, shaped her waist and hips, elongated her neck, and even changed the color and shape of her hands. An already gorgeous actress still needed to be refined so that her image fit the magazine's expectations. This pressures people, women especially, into trying be the picture–perfect representation of society. Jennifer's perspective on this was shown when she said, "The world has this idea that if you don't look like an airbrushed perfect model, you have to see past it. You look how you look, you have to be comfortable. What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That's just dumb" (Adams). An eating disorder can look like a few different things, ranging from a severe reduction of food intake to over eating to feelings of negativity towards your body shape or weight (Lehigh University). While some disorders can only be found in specific age groups, races, etc., eating disorders can be found amongst all and it does not necessarily have to be pointed towards food (Lehigh University). In fact, the four areas primarily affect eating disorders: psychological, interpersonal, social, and biological. I am going to talk about three specific eating disorders: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Keep in mind that there could be other eating disorders out there that are not found and classified just yet (Lehigh University). Because these activities often include a profound awareness of both body image and weight, athletes often have a significant sense of their bodies and seek ways to control them. In addition to the mental aspect, sports provide athletes with a competitive environment where eating disorders can breed. Sports coaches can also contribute to the eating disorder risk. A supportive environment which encourages athletes to make the best of themselves is to be preferred over one where criticism and bullying (especially in relation to weight and body composition) are the norm (Currie). Constant belittling and animadversion places a serious strain on an athlete's mental status, leaving room for an eating disorder to develop. The emphasis on reducing body weight or fat percentage to enhance sport performance can result in weight pressures on student–athletes from coaches, parents, or even teammates. Since the 1950s the cases of eating disorders have been increasing, especially in westernized countries (Wade, Keski–Rahkonen, & Hudson, 2011). 1950 was the year where having curves was accepted, but this view changed when societal culture started to become more important to the average person. Culture is comprised of how people think, behave, and work in a particular society (Merriam–webster's collegiate dictionary, 2015). Societal culture is comprised of athletic influence, media, and the fashion industry. All of the societal culture factors are responsible for the rise of eating disorders in young adults. In 2011, it was found that 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from eating disorders at some point in their lives (Wade et. al, 2011). Eating disorders are not always considered an important mental illness, but due to the high number of cases they should be because they can lead to health problems including slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and severe dehydration. These side effects can lead to death if not treated properly which is why eating disorders should be looked at as a clinical disease. Athletics To illustrate how societal culture plays a crucial role in the rise of eating disorders, influence from parents and coaches of athletes were looked at. Around the time of Caesar's rule (700 A.D.), wealthy romans would throw feasts, when they started to become full they would go to a vomitorium to purge, then they would return to their feasts to once again overindulge. The last examples are the women of Italy. To show their devotion to their religion these women would expose themselves to extreme means of torture. • 60. Effects Of Binge Eating On Eating Disorders Purging Disorder is characterized by recurrent purging (self –induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas) to control weight or shape in the absence of binge eating episodes. (Forney, Haedt–Matt, & Keel, 2014) There are many behaviors associated with purging disorder such as binge eating which leads to loss of control, or overeating in anorexia nervosa. (Goldschmidt et al., 2015) Sociocultural and psychiatric factors are also believed to be important in the subject of weight concerns, dieting, and unhealthy weight control practices. (Simone et al., 1996; Symth et al., 2008) Binge eating is the strongest predictor of purging, loss of control, and overeating. Each were associated with a higher likelihood of purging than non–pathological eating. (Goldschmidt et al., 2015) Researchers had participants trained in how to record mood, stressful events, and behavior for event contingent (completed after any eating episodes or anorexia nervosa behaviors such as binge eating and purging), interval–contingent (nightly assessments) and signal–contingent recordings (completed response to six daily semi–random prompts by investigators occurring every 2–3 hours. Participants recorded their behaviors and results showed that purging (in the absence of loss of control, and/overeating) may serve to regulate negative affect in a similar way as binge eating. Purging may simply delay the experience of a negative mood. Both loss of control and overeating appeared to be important ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Eating Disorders In Children Eating disorders are sadly a common occurrence in today's society. These disorders are broadly defined as an illness where an individual develops irregular eating habits such as eating too much or eating too little and is categorized as a mental illness. Also, some individuals may eat selectively where they avoid eating specific foods. Eating disorders can bring about severe health complications such as severe loss of weight or excess gaining of weight (Agras, 2010). An individual may suffer from lack of immunity and if the problem is not addressed the consequences can be detrimental or even fatal (Hudson, 2007). Eating disorders can develop during any developmental stage in life. The following paper provides a detailed discussion of children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are two theories that fit to explain the occurrence of eating disorder; these are that either emotions or biological defects are the cause of eating disorders. For instance, body dissatisfaction, low self–esteem, and social pressures all lead to an emotional distress (Parke, 2009). Following this distress, the child will tend to adopt a maladaptive coping strategy such as controlling their food intake (Parke, 2009). On the other hand, scientists have also found that eating disorders can also be biologically controlled where some children lack certain chemicals that control appetite, hunger, and digestion. Often, these chemicals are lacking or they are unbalanced in a child who develops an eating disorder (Hudson, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Understanding Eating Disorders A large amount of research has been done on the subject of eating disorders and their causes. Many eating disorders have proven to emerge during a young age and often serve as the foundations to more serious problems like depression and even death. Although there are no real solutions to eating disorders taking various medicines can help improve it, also going to therapy can help. Many people think eating disorders are not important, but they are very important. Eight million of American population suffers from eating disorders (seven million women, one million men). There are over ten types of eating disorders from anorexia to rumination. The affect this has on women is becoming a dramatic increase and what is being done is not enough. There are many types of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and even night eating syndrome. The two that America suffers from are anorexia and bulimia. These disorders and very serious in the female population. Many teen girls suffer with anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder in which girls use starvation diets to try to lose weight. These teens starve themselves until they are skeletal like and yet after that think they are overweight. This leads to a type one depression which is highly dangerous for adolescents. • 66. Eating Disorders Paper Family systems have long been explored as a framework to understand and treat eating disorders. Many existing explanations surmise that dysfunctional familial processes, most often involving mothers and daughters, are associated with eating disturbance (Ringer & Crittenden, 2 007; Pollack & Keaschuk, 2008). These family systems appear to be impaired by both oedipal and preoedipal pathologies (Sours, 1980; Schulman, 2002). The purpose of this paper is to offer an explanation for the role of identification in bulimia nervosa within both oedipal and preoedipal clients. Two cases are presented to illustrate ways in which two women's identification with the maternal object prevented expression of rage towards her, and instead turned against the self as the body was attacked via bingeing and self–induced vomiting. Eating disorders are serious psychological conditions with grave consequences for the individuals affected by them. Eating disorders have a 20% mortality rate, with anorexia accounting for approximately 5.1 deaths per 1000 persons and bulimia accounting for 1.74 deaths per 1000 persons (Arcelus, J., Mitchell, A.J., Wales, J., & Nielsen, S., 2011; Trent, Moreira, ... For example, women with anorexia and bulimia routinely describe their mothers as both 'controlling' and 'needy.' Some research suggests that mothers of eating disordered women suffer from their own issues related to unresolved trauma and loss (Beattie, 1988; Ringer & Crittenden, 2007). While research on parental trauma and offspring eating pathology is scarce, there are several indicators to support such a relationship given the positive correlation between parental anxiety, parental over–intrusiveness, insecure attachment and eating disturbance (Chassler, 1997; Rorty et al., 2000; Taborelli et al., ... • 68. Eating Disorders Essay An eating disorder is an illness that involves an unhealthy feeling about the food we eat. "Eating disorders affect 5–10 millions Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide" (www.eatingdisorderinfo.org 1). They also affect many people from women, men, children, from all ages and different races. People who have eating disorders usually see themselves as being fat when they really aren't. This usually deals with women or teenage girls mostly. They watch television, movies, read articles in magazines, and see pictures of the celebrities whom they want to be like because they have the "ideal body" that everyone wants and craves for. The media makes us all think we need those types of bodies to be happy with ourselves, be more successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But in order to do this we need to stop looking at other people and seeing what's missing from ourselves. Stop buying the magazines and diet products, stop looking at the people in television and movies, and just be us. We need to have more confidence in ourselves and show other people what we can get in life without having the perfect body. People who have Anorexia Nervosa have this fear of gaining weight so they result by not eating regularly or eat little amounts of food or not eating at all. People see themselves as being fat but instead they are skinny. "Anorexics usually strive for perfection" (www.mirror–mirror.org 1). So in doing this they feel like not eating anything can make them look perfect and have the body they want. "The lack of food can cause a person to become very thin, develop brittle hair and nails, dry skin, and a low pulse, become not able to stand the cold, and suffer from constipation and sometimes diarrhea" (Hendrick 3). Anorexics put other people's feelings in front of theirs. They also feel that the only thing in their lives is food and their weight and this shows that they have low self–esteem for themselves. "Signs and symptoms are noticeable weight loss, becoming withdrawn, excessive exercise, fatigue, always being cold, and muscle weakness" (www.mirror–mirror.org 1). • 70. Eating Disorders The rise of clinically diagnosed cases of anorexia nervosa nervosa and bulimia nervosa nervosa are increasing over the decades. According to Barlow,Durand and Stewart(2012), eating disorders are found to be more prevalent among women, specifically between the ages of 12 and 25 years of age. Prior to modern research, researchers saw eating disorders as a Western phenomenon due to the fact that non western countries did not have such a wide variety of food available to them. This perspective is now changing. Individuals in other countries (non–western) have been diagnosed with eating disorders as well, however it is not as frequent as the United States or Canada for example(Barlow et al., 2012). With that said, women go to drastic measures such as following a strict diet in order to obtain the "ideal body image". Eyal &Te'eni–Harari (2013), describe the ways in which the media portrays thin people and bigger individuals. Heavier character on TV shows appear to be unattractive and or not sexually desirable. Another key point that was brought from Eyal & Te'eni–Harari's (2013) article is that women have been proven to unconsciously compare themselves to other women especially those that they praise(models/celebrities). With this knowledge, it is fair to place some blame on the media and its "thin unattainable ideal" and its influence on women and their low self–esteem which in turn may cause an eating disorder (Eyal & Te'eni–Harari 2013). In the article "Eating and Body Image Disturbances Across Cultures: A Review" by Soh, Touyz & Surgenor (2006), the authors suggested the possibility of the Western culture influenced the Non– Western into adapting the "ideal of thinness". For the reason that Non–Western cultures valued "thickness" prior to thinness. They also stated that eating disorders other wise known as "non– eating disorders"have been prevalent in other non–westernized countries for centuries (Soh et al., 2006). These researchers also encountered a finding that suggested acculturation of western society played a large role in the non– western world to adopt western traditions ... She was valedictorian, homecoming queen, student body president, an honor roll student, and the list goes on. She always strived for perfection. Life was easy for Jennifer. She always got what she wanted. Unfortunately, this all came to a halt when it was time for her to face an all new reality: college. Jennifer was no longer around her friends and family. However, when factors such as school work, a new environment, and a feeling of loneliness leaves a female feeling powerless she becomes vulnerable to outside influences like the media, and fashion magazines. Fashion magazines and the media are filled with beautiful women that appear to be extremely thin. Every time someone turns on the television or looks at magazines they see some kind of advertisement for fitness programs or some method of dieting. There is a strong emphasis on dieting and maintaining some ideal weight. Looking at these ads full of "skinny" women gives other women a sense of insecurity about themselves, making them think that thin is the way to be. Society in general tends to think that all women are supposed to appear to look like these surreal images that we see on television and in magazines. You hardly ever see plus size models on TV or in magazines advertising a product. It seems to me that if you are not a Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, or Naomi Campbell then you don't have a chance of succeeding in this fat phobic world. It's obvious that not everyone in college has this problem, but the group of females who do, need help fast because eating disorders can become deadly if not stopped early. Even to this day, psychology still debates over the nature vs. nurture issue. The Greek philosopher, Plato, supposed that individuals inherit character and intelligence and that certain ideas are natural. Aristotle opposed that there is nothing in the mind that does not first come through the senses. Charles Darwin theory of natural selection added to the nature side of the debate that nature plays a role in what is already embodied in us. (Myers, 2014, p. 5–6) The nature vs. nurture issue relates to the theme of this article because nature and nurture both play a role in an individual developing an eating disorder. The nature side of the eating disorder is an individual can inherit an eating disorder from a parent, or grandparent. Whether it's the same eating disorder or not, an individual can develop one of the eating disorders if an older relative had one. The nurture side of the eating disorder is society's idea of a perfect body. Their idea of a perfect body is skinny and that makes young women and men feel insecure about their body and they soon develop an eating disorder. In addition to the environment being an influence on individuals developing an eating disorder, eating disorders also have biological causes. The treatments for anorexia nervosa include short–term weight gain. The overall prognosis for patients with anorexia is dependant of wether treatment is received or not (Morris, J. & Twaddle, S., 2007). Some people with eating disorders wait until the very last moment to even attempt to get help because they don't see that they have a problem. Bulimia nervosa is a second eating disorder that needs attention drawn to it. Bulimia was pretty much unknown before the mid 1970's (Dippel, N. & Becknal, K., 1987). Bulimia consists of binging and purging (eating as much as possible and then throwing it up). In a study that was conducted it was found that after bulimics had attempted several diets without success, they then became aware of vomiting or laxatives as a means to weight loss (Herzog, 1982). The symptoms of bulimia heave to do with preoccupations with food, weight, body image, and ridding themselves of ingested food (Dippel, N. & Becknal, K., 1987). Most people throw up because they feel guilty for consuming all the foods they know they shouldn't have. They vomit not only to get rid of the food but to get rid of any unwanted feelings and emotions. Most patients begin purging approximately 1 year after the binge eating has started. In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, a person must also have a healthy body image. However, healthy body images have been rapidly decreasing in recent years. After a period of time, their extreme hunger overpowers their control and they eat a great amount of food in a short period of time, which is referred to as binging. In fact, the name bulimia is taken from the Greek words bous ("ox") and limos ("hunger"), implying hunger of such intensity that a person can eat an entire ox (94). Since the great amount of food that they consume is not on their strict diet plan to be thin, they become very fearful of a possible weight gain and they purge. Induced vomiting, taking laxatives, and excessively exercising are examples of purging in somebody with bulimia. After doing this they feel guilty, yet relieved. Once the person realizes that they can eat basically anything that they want without gaining weight, they make it an ongoing cycle. However, there are many side effects. These include constipation, dehydration, damaged tooth enamel, breakage of stomach and esophagus lining, depression, and may even result in death (101).
