5. Early Life and Education
After completing his studies, Srila Prabhupada
became involved in India's struggle for
independence from British rule. In 1922, he met
his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakura, who convinced him to dedicate his life
to spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna.
Srila Prabhupada, born in Calcutta, India in 1896,
was named Abhay Charan De by his parents. He
was raised in a devout Vaishnava family and
received a traditional education in Sanskrit and
the Vedic scriptures.
6. Journey to America
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada travelled to America with only
$7 in his pocket and a few boxes of books. He arrived in New York City
and began preaching the message of Lord Krishna in Tompkins Square
Park.
Despite facing many challenges, including a lack of funds and cultural
differences, Srila Prabhupada's message began to attract followers. He
established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)
and opened temples around the world.
7. Teachings and Philosophy
Srila Prabhupada's philosophy also stressed the importance
of living a simple, austere lifestyle that was free from
materialistic distractions. He encouraged his followers to
practice vegetarianism, celibacy, and other forms of self-
discipline.
Srila Prabhupada's teachings were based on the
ancient Vedic scriptures, particularly the
Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad-Bhagavatam. He
emphasized the importance of chanting the Hare
Krishna mantra as a means of attaining spiritual
enlightenment.
8. Legacy
Srila Prabhupada's legacy continues to inspire
millions of people around the world. His
teachings have been translated into dozens of
languages and his books have sold over 500
million copies worldwide.
Today, ISKCON has over 600 temples,
ashrams, and centres in more than 60
countries. Srila Prabhupada's followers
continue to spread his message of love,
peace, and devotion to Lord Krishna.
9. Controversies
Despite his many achievements, Srila Prabhupada's
life was not without controversy. Some critics
accused him of being authoritarian and intolerant of
dissenting views.
Others criticized his strict rules and regulations,
which included a ban on premarital sex, drugs, and
alcohol. However, many of his followers credit these
rules with helping them to overcome addiction and
other destructive behaviors.

visionary leader who dedicated his life to
spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna.
