Questioning skills helps in having successful relationship between the teachers and students and it will help to gain more information in the teaching learning process.
2. Meaning of questioning skills
• A questions is any sentence which has an interrogative form.
Questioning is the fundamental to successful communication.
• To have successful interaction between teacher and students
• It is the key to gain more information in the teaching learning process.
3. Purpose of questioning
• Participation of students
• Encourage students to think critically and creatively
• Develop interest and curiosity
• To know student understanding about content
• To maintain concentration of students.
4. Types of questions
• Factual questions ( based on real history or real facts)
• Closed – ended questions ( yes/ no)
• Open –ended questions ( students give own view of answer)
• Lower order questions ( easy one without effort use of cognitive and
application)
• Higher order questions ( critical type of questions, use of cognitive
and application, synthesis)
• Probing questions ( asked easy relevant questions with hints)
5. Desirable behaviour of a teacher
• To ask questions effectively the teacher should make use of the “APPLE”
mnemonics given by Prof. Marter
• A- stands for ask questions i.e teacher should prepare questions in
advance.
• P -Pause give learner some few seconds about 3/5 seconds to think about
the questions to give answer.
• P- Pick the learner by calling his/her name to answer the questions. Surety
of 100% participation of the students.
• L-Listen to the answer given by the students, have eye contact, give
reinforcement.
• E- Expound. Generate dialogue based on the learners response. If the
learner response are incorrect, redirect back to the others learner.
6. Undesirable behaviour of a teacher
• Yes or no type questions . ( eg. Is this pencil?)
• Eliptical questions ( eg. Your father name is…)
• Echo questions ( eg. Teacher explain about Gandhiji, and immediately
asks. Who is Gandhiji?)
• Double barrel questions ( questions having more than one thought)
• Ambiguous questions ( confusing or which does not have answer)
