A mixed fraction has a combination of a whole and a
part.
5. FROM MIXED FRACTION TO IMPROPER
FRACTION
We can express a mixed fraction as an improper fraction as
𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐱 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 + 𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫
𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫

6. Write the following as improper fractions -:
a) 7

b) 2

c) 10

Ans - a) 7

7. Simplest form of a fraction
A fraction is said to be in the simplest ( or lowest )
form if its numerator and denominator have no
common factor except 1.
The shortest way to find the equivalent fraction in the
simplest form is to find the H.C.F of the numerator and
denominator and then divide both of them by H.C.F.
8. Write the following as mixed fractions -:
a)
𝟏𝟓
𝟕𝟓
b)
𝟖𝟒
𝟗𝟖
c)
𝟏𝟓𝟎
𝟔𝟎
Ans - a)
𝟏𝟓
𝟕𝟓
( H.C.F of 15 and 75 is 15 )
Now divide both numerator and denominator by 15
𝟏𝟓 ÷ 𝟏𝟓
𝟕𝟓 ÷ 𝟏𝟓
=
𝟏

12. UNLIKE FRACTIONS
Fractions with different denominators are called
Unlike Fractions.
𝟏
𝟕
,
𝟏𝟏
𝟏𝟕
,
𝟓
𝟐
,
𝟐
𝟗
,
𝟕𝟎
𝟖𝟏
are all Unlike fractions
𝟑
𝟕
,
𝟑
𝟏𝟕𝟏
,
𝟑
𝟐𝟔
,
𝟑
𝟏𝟗
,
𝟑
𝟒𝟎
are all Unlike fractions with
same numerator
13. Comparing Unlike Fractions with same
numerator
Compare two unlike fractions with same numerator ,
fraction with the greater denominator is the smaller
fraction.
For ex - Compare fractions -
𝟐
𝟗
and
𝟐
𝟕
Ans - Since 9 > 7
therefore ,
𝟐
𝟕
>
𝟐

14. Compare fractions -:
b)
𝟓𝟎
𝟐𝟕
,
𝟓𝟎
𝟑𝟏
Ans - b) Since 27 < 31 and these are Unlike fractions
with same numerator
therefore

15. Adding Fractions
To add fractions follow these steps
1) Find the L.C.M ( Least common multiple ) of
denominators of fractions.
2) Convert fractions into an equivalent fractions whose
denominators are same as that L.C.M
3) Now we will get like fractions whose denominators
same as that L.C.M and now add them.
16. Add fractions -:
a)
𝟐
𝟓
+
𝟏
𝟑
Ans - a) L.C.M of 3 and 5 is 15
Convert these fractions into an equivalent fractions with
denominators same as that L.C.M ( 15 in this case )
𝟐 × 𝟑
𝟓 × 𝟑
𝟏 × 𝟓
𝟑 × 𝟓

18. Subtracting Fractions
To subtract fractions follow these steps
1) Find the L.C.M ( Least common multiple ) of
denominators of fractions.
2) Convert fractions into an equivalent fractions whose
denominators are same as that L.C.M
3) Now we will get like fractions whose denominators
same as that L.C.M and now subtract them.
19. Subtract fractions -:
a)
𝟓
𝟔
-
𝟏
𝟑
Ans - a) L.C.M of 3 and 6 is 6
Convert these fractions into an equivalent fractions with
denominators same as that L.C.M ( 6 in this case )
