Pierre Bourdieu Cultural Capital
The Social World
Continuous assessment 1.1 Sociological Cinema Exercise
Cultural Capital, a video by Sociology Live! (2015), embodies the many aspects that define an
individual or group s standing within a society. The video begins with an introduction of a french
theorist, Pierre Bourdieu, who developed the theory of Cultural Capital . His theory suggests that
cultural capital is the cultural knowledge that serves as a currency which helps one navigate culture,
hence, alter our experience and opportunities available to us. The video then outlines the various
elements that make up cultural capital, including material objects (apparel, cars, personal belongings)
and symbolic elements (tastes, manners, skills and credentials). It then focuses on another view of ...

This view reversed, is also visible with lower class people and low cultural capital. The rising issue
outlined in this video and capitalism as a whole, is that people in a society are grouped in a certain
hierarchical manner according to their class, status and power. Alternatively, Marx, another renown
sociologist defined the capitalist system primarily on modes of production, separating the society with
proletariats (workers who perform a certain task to obtain an orderly income) and capitalists
(industries or companies who earn money through profit, rent and interest). Marx also believed that
inheritance down the generations is a head start for the newer generations to build a higher financial
capital as capitalists would have built up a larger inheritance to pass down compared to proletariats
(Van Krieken et al. pp.212, 213). Both Marx and aspects of Bourdieu s theories of capitalism indicate
that wealth and privilege are primarily contributed to define a group or individuals hierarchical

Discuss the Relationship Between the Principles of...
Discuss the relationship between the principles of training, physiological adaptations and improved
performance
The relationship between the principles of training and physiological adaptations has a significant
impact on performance. Many factors need to be addressed in a training program to make it a
successful one for a particular athlete and thus improve their performance.
The first principles are warm up and cool down. The purpose of any warm up and cool down is to
reduce the risk of injury and soreness. For this to be applicable, a warm up must be sustained for no
less than 10min and for elite athletes, at least 30min. Included in this warm up must be stretching to
loosen up the muscles. There are no physiological adaptations that ... Show more content on

These adaptations are relevant because the body is being stressed which leads to more blood being
needed by the working muscles. With this increase in stroke volume and cardiac output, it also
increases the heart rate. Heart rate is the amount of times the heart beats per minute. This means that
the heart is working hard and being progressively overloaded increases the efficiency and will
improve the performance of the athlete. Another adaptation is oxygen uptake. When the body is being
progressively overloaded oxygen uptake is really important because it is the amount of oxygen being
delivered to working muscles. This amount increases when exercise begins but decreases as
adaptations occur. This is very similar to lung capacity as lung capacity is the amount of air that the
lungs can hold. Another physiological adaptation in relation to progressive overload is haemoglobin
levels. Haemoglobin is the substance in the blood that binds to oxygen and transports it around the
body. These levels are important because it s telling us how much oxygen and blood is being used and
directly relates to stroke volume and oxygen uptake. Muscle hypertrophy is a term that refers to
muscle growth together with an increase in the size of muscle cells. For a sprinter this adaptation is
very important because it indicates that the muscles have been stimulated and grown and an

Switzerland Immigration Politics Essay examples
In order to have a complete understanding of the politics of immigration in Switzerland, it is crucial to
realize the impact direct democracy has in shaping public policy and public opinion. Hanspeter Kriesi
and Alexander Trechsel, two prominent Swiss political scientists, consider direct democracy not only
to be the most crucial institution of the Swiss political system but also the most developed system of
its kind in the world, both in terms of significance and in terms of sheer numbers. Swiss voters took
part in 321 referendums between 1960 and 2003, over seven per year on average, by far the most
numerous of the 47 nations in the Council of Europe. The importance of direct democracy in ensuring
the continued salience of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Constitution was revised in 1874, the optional referendum was introduced allowing the
holding of a referendum on any change to federal legislation... which can be requested by 50,000
voters or eight cantons within a period of 100 days after the publication of the law. Of the 2181
parliamentary decisions eligible for an optional referendum from 1848 to 2005, only 156 were subject
to them. Of these 156, only 46% were successful in rejecting legislation that had been passed by
Parliament.
The already expansive institution of direct democracy was further extended in 1891 with the
introduction of the popular initiative for the partial revision of the Constitution that must also be
accepted by a double majority of people and cantons. In order to present a popular initiative to the
electorate, organizers must gather 100,000 signatures within eighteen months. Interestingly, popular
initiatives can consist of complete proposals for constitutional modifications or merely a proposal that
simply states a general goal of changing the Constitution leaving it up to Parliament to implement said
goals as it sees fit. Popular initiatives are incredibly diverse, ranging from demands for new footpaths
in the Alps to the abolition of the armed forces. When faced with a popular initiative, the Federal
Parliament may...formulate a counterproposal to the initiative...in which case the

Agile methodology follows iterative development method which make it more suitable to use for light
weight projects where the changes are frequent. Waterfall on other case is a heavy weight
methodology with no changes or iterations allowed once the project starts. Here the requirements are
fixed and any change later is not accommodated and will be considered as a new project. Both the
methodologies are adopted for a project based on its type and requirement. In this paper We have
applied both Waterfall and Agile methods to a Service Delivery platform project of a telecom

Analysis Of The Rikers Island Prison
On April 17, 2016 60 Minutes aired the interview of Bill Whitaker with Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney.
He stated that the Rikers Island prison had a culture of violence. Specifically he claimed that if a
prisoner commits an offense, they need to be punished; however, the same goes for a prison guard if
they, too, commit and offense; they d need to be punished as well. As the interviewee said, People
have to understand that there are consequences for their actions, not just the inmates, but the officers
as well. Although some people believe that if a prisoner steps out of line then they deserve whatever
punishment they get, Jonathan Abady, a private attorney, insists that many of the injuries go too far,

Ibjectages And Disadvantages Of A Relational Database...
A relational database management system is based on the relational model described by E.F. Codd.
Data is stored in tables, in the form of rows and columns and the relationhips between these tables is
also stored in the form of a table.
The tables, which contain data stored in rows and columns are made using SQL. Before storing data, it
is essential to identify relationships among them. This is done so using an Entity Relationship diagram
which is a graphical representation that identifies relationships among the various tables.
Advantages
Authorization: RDBMS allows the database controller to allow and restrict features to specific
database users based on their accessibility level. This way confidential data can be accessed by only

2. Object oriented database management system:
An object database is a database management system that incorporates all the important Object
oriented concepts. These concepts include Abstract Data Types, Encapsulation, Inheritance,
Polymorphism among others.
Objects in an OODBMS consist of Attributes and Methods. Attributes are data that define traits of an
objects whereas Methods define the working of an object.
Advantages
Enriched modeling capabilities: The object oriented data model allows the real world to be modeled
more closely.
Code Reusability: The object oriented features allow the high reusability of code. For example, when
a new object is created, it will inherit all the attributes and methods of the class of which it is an object
of, in addition to all the parent classes of that class.
Capable of handling a large variety of data types: OODBMS is capable of storing data having a
variety of data types such as pictures, video, text, numbers etc. which databases such as RDBMS are

Abstinence In Adolescents
The intervention teaches that abstinence is the most effective way to prevent STDs, but it emphasizes
that if adolescents do have sex they should use condoms. It addresses attitudes toward condom use,
skill and self efficacy in using condoms, beliefs about negative consequences of condoms for sexual
enjoyment, and skill and self efficacy in negotiating condom use. It includes themes that encourage
adolescents to be proud of themselves, their family, and their community; to behave responsibly for
the sake of themselves, their family, and their community; and to consider their goals for the future
and how unhealthful behavior might hinder their efforts to achieve those goals (Jemmott, John B., III,

Construction and Demolition Waste
Briefing Paper: Construction and Demolition Waste
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is a significant issue in New Zealand. Teo and Loosemore
(2001) maintain: Levels of waste within the construction industry need to be reduced for
environmental and economic reasons. Changing people s wasteful behaviour can make a significant
contribution (pp.741). This paper defines the CDW issue, significant stakeholders, relevant ethical
theories and costs.
CDW has increased as construction volumes have risen generally, and following natural disasters. For
example, the Canterbury Earthquakes generated a major increase in CDW. Major damage to buildings,
rock falls and landslips, liquefaction and major infrastructure damage has left an estimated $7.1 billion
[Earthquake Commission] EQC bill, says Mackenzie (2011 pp.33). The Canterbury Earthquake
Recovery Authority (CERA, n.d.) estimated 8 million tonnes of CDW. CERA (n.d.) points to the
construction industry and local authorities working together to find and quickly implement new
solutions for recycling or reusing waste.
More generally, Level Organisation (2013) noted that demolition and construction processes are the
most significant producer of waste as opposed to other stages of buildings lives. Much CDW is seen to
be preventable: Most of this dumping of construction waste is unnecessary it has been demonstrated
that simply by sorting waste, at least half of it could be diverted from landfills (Level Organisation,
2013).

Imperial Decline Causes
Causes of Imperial Decline
During the period of 600 BCE to 600 CE there was much political unrest throughout the world. This
essay will analyze the reason for collapse of once powerful ancient empires by scrutinizing the rulers
who led them. By looking at the circumstances of a fallen empire, a person can asses that the neglect
of government officials, stressed with vast war expenses, who levy high taxes that lead to peasant
uprisings, is the circular chain of events that will always eventually crumble a weak empire. And as
specific as they may seem, these crises developed many a time. The circular chain of events almost
always begins with a neglectful leader. But neglect can be defined in multiple ways. Emperor Han
Huandi of Han China was neglectful in his style of governing. He increased the power of his court
eunuchs, thus corrupting the system. Bribery was common. With the government corruption, less time
was spent worrying about common folk. Rebellions took place, and Han Huandi continued to ignore
his people, not granting them any compromise. Although the Han dynasty did not immediately come

that a leader must focus on their citizens first and foremost, not neglecting them with the desire for
more land that they can t even afford. Many leaders of the time bit off much more than they could
chew. It is clear now that the fall of civilizations can almost always be traced back to the treatment of
the poor and middle classes, even in empires as wealthy and powerful as Rome and Han

The War On Terrorism During The United States
The war on terrorism in the United States began after the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Following the war was a series of military campaigns carried out to destroy terrorist organizations in
the Middle East. Led by the George W. Bush administration, America made goals for the war on terror
to defeat main targets and terrorist leaders such as Osama bin Laden. The invasion of the Middle East
was supported by the American people at first. After three more years Saddam Hussein s weapons of
mass destruction no longer existed. Multiple terrorist forces fighting Al Qaeda were taken down.
However, America has maintained its military presence in the region until present day. According to
Will Fight for Oil by Ted Koppel, if production of oil from the Persian Gulf stopped the American
economy would be devastated. The american economy runs on oil; a large percentage of the oil we use
comes from the Middle East. The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 has not left yet because of the
possible dangers of a Middle East without American military presence. Without American supervision
the regional instability of the Middle East could be very bad for oil production. To protect the
American interests in the region military forces have not been removed. The people at home are all
aware that we have American soldiers in the region. American civilians are used to living in a country
at war. The constant period of America at war starting in 2003, has made America always prepared for

The Civil Rights Movement From The 1960 s
In today s world, people deal with the constant struggle of finding whose needs are more important.
Individuals, and individualism itself, claim to have their life be there s, and they can do whatever they
please, however, when people put society s needs before theirs, they are doing their good for society,
and everyone around them. Society s goal is to move the human population forward in a positive
direction, and to help everyone instead of just one person. In today s world, individuals must look at
society, and social needs to fulfill their own needs, giving the needs of society more of an importance
to all. When you compare the overall purpose of individual needs and. social needs, social needs are
there to fulfill the needs of all individuals. In society, when people are apart of a group, they feel a
sense of pride, and importance towards that group. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

individuals around you will be affected positively like in the Civil Rights Movement. Although society
makes a positive impact on others, society also gives a good holding ground of what people can and
can t do in general. Today social media and public encounters with people give a general direction of
what is acceptable and what is not. People have many different styles, and some are more wild than
others, so when those types of people are in public, or on social media or something that multiple

Traditional Teaching Method
Abstract/ Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the traditional methods of teaching as well
as multimedia teaching and to suggest other useful teaching methods that can be attempted in
imparting knowledge to the students. Basically teaching must include two major components sending
and receiving information. Ultimately, a teacher tries his best to impart knowledge as the way he
understood it.
So, any communication methods that serve this purpose without destroying the objective could be
considered as innovative methods of teaching. The use of innovative methods in educational
institutions has the potential not only to improve education, but also to empower people, strengthen

III.Methodology
The traditional or innovative methods of teaching are critically examined, evaluated and some
modifications in the delivery of knowledge is suggested. As such, the strengths and weaknesses of
each teaching methodology are identified and probable modifications that can be included in
traditional methods are suggested.
IV. Traditional Teaching Method An evaluation
In the pre technology education context, the teacher is the sender or the source, the educational
material is the information or message, and the student is the receiver of the information. In terms of
the delivery medium, the educator can deliver the message via the chalk and talk method and overhead
projector (OHP) transparencies. This directed instruction model has its foundations embedded in the
behavioral learning perspective (Skinner, 1938) and it is a popular technique, which has been used for
decades as an educational strategy in all institutions of learning. Basically, the teacher controls the
instructional process, the content is delivered to the entire class and the teacher tends to emphasize
factual knowledge.

Geology of Yellowstone Essay
Introduction
It is believed that Native Americans inhabited the lands of what is now Yellowstone National Park for
more than 11,000 years, until approximately 200 years ago, when European settlers began to drive
many of them from their homelands. In 1872 Yellowstone was declared the world s first national park
as a way to preserve and protect the land for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
(National Park Service) Yellowstone National Park covers a vast area in the Northwestern United
States. Its landscape is very complex and ever changing thanks to the many geological forces that are
found there. In fact, the unique geological features such as the geysers, hot springs, steam vents,
among many others, are what lead to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The third eruption happened about 640,000 years ago, and spewed 240 cubic miles of material. This
third eruption created the third and largest of Yellowstone s calderas, Yellowstone Caldera, which is 30
by 45 miles in size. The pyroclastic lava flows from this eruption formed the north wall of the caldera
and are visible from the south facing cliffs east of Madison. (Solcomhouse) This third eruption is said
to have vaporized an entire mountain range. Smaller eruptions have also helped to shape Today s
Yellowstone, such as one that occurred 174,000 years ago and created what is now the West Thumb of
Yellowstone Lake. (National Park Service) Many sources say that a catastrophic eruption, such as
those that have formed the three calderas at Yellowstone, is unlikely during the next several hundred
years, but if one such eruption did occur it would devastate much of the United States and would have
the potential to alter the global climate.
Lava flows of rhyolite and basalt have flowed through parts of Yellowstone as recently as 70,000
years ago. These lava flows destroyed everything in their paths while moving slowly at a rate of a few
hundred feet per day, flowing months, or sometimes even several years. They are thick and cover as
much as 130 square miles. They have nearly filled the Yellowstone Caldera, and spilled beyond the
caldera s border. These lava flows are responsible for forming four of the nine named plateaus in

The Navajo, also known as Dine`, are some of the first Indians who set foot in America. The primary
mode of subsistence for any culture means a way of supporting life. The Navajo s primary modes of
subsistence are pastoralists. How does a pastoralist society impact beliefs and values, healing and
sickness, and kinship of the Navajo culture? These are the three aspects I plan to discuss and prove
that the Navajo Nation is a Nation within a Nation. The Navajo Nation is a semi autonomous Native

In the early twentieth century oil and gas lead the US government to form a Navajo business council.
Herbert J. Hagerman was hired by the US government to lead Navajo tribal councils and run the
meetings. (Lee, 2010) In the 1940 s the Navajo nation changed tremendously. They no longer raised
sheep or livestock, instead thousands of Navajo people went off to find wage labor to supplement their
income instead. The tribal council industrialized itself. (Lee, 2007) In the 1970 s the Navajo nation
was reorganized and the reservation had someone in control of the nation. Peter MacDonald was
elected chairman of the council and made new powers direct the Navajo government. In 1998 the
tribal council passed a Navajo Nation Local Governance Act that allowed local matters to be made by
local level people, allowing more local authority. The current government structure is now an agency
to the Navajo society, yet it is non Navajo nature, and the people of Navajo have never sanctioned it.
Today the Navajo Nation doesn t have the self sufficient powers it once did. Congress and US
Supreme courts have limited the powers of the tribal government. . Today, Supreme Court decisions
still keep the Native Americans from having their ability to self determine, and give the Native
Americans limited sovereignty. (Lee, 2007) The Navajo s believe there are the Earth people and the

Comparing Ancient Cultures
The differences in ancient cultures are prominent. From different civilizations we see different
creations taking place. Through studying these differences we can see what is different between
civilizations and their culture, values and art. We are also able to study these and make connections
between them. Some items which we can compare and contrast are sculptures and relief sculptures,
paintings in the old, middle and new kingdoms, innovations of the new kingdom and basic
conventions early art endures. Sculptures are three dimensional art forms. Reliefs are as defined by the
text as, Figures or forms carved so that they project from a flat surface or stone background. (Ancient
Civilizations, pg. 13) Sculptures were used by many civilizations to create figures or forms in three
dimension. The egyptians used reliefs and sculptures in art religiously. They decorated their tombs
with them. They often represented the afterlife and what they believed they would be doing in the

Film Industry Depression
Movies have always been an important part of American s lives. They are a way to escape everyday
life and experience action and adventure of some sort. Throughout time, movies have developed into
what they are today. During a time of depression and economic worries, The Hollywood Movie
Industry flourished and greatly influenced people s lives in the 1930s. The movies were a captivating
escape from the reality of the depression. During a time of economic hardship, people needed
something to hold onto and hope for. For many, movies was this hope. Petra Press said that The most
popular of these escapes by far was the magic of motion pictures (Press 87). In saying this she meant
that movies were the number one source of freedom from the depression. ... Show more content on

Shirley Temple, a famous child star, had a franchise of coloring books and dolls made after her, and
cities across America even hosted look alike Shirley Temple contests (Feinstein 19). Jean Harlow, an
actor with platinum blond hair, influenced a trend of many girls who wanted to dye their hair this
bright blond color (Press 88). These two actors specifically, along with many others, influenced the
style and way of life for many. Some movies helped to solve issues, such as I am a Fugitive from the
Chain Game. This movie promoted the reform of corrupt courts in the 1930s (Press 92). Another
movie at the time taught the lesson that it is not about the stereotypical class but the people in it. This
movie was The Philadelphia Story (Jensen). Some other movies were simply popular because of the
current culture, and because of how well done they were. For example, Gone with the Wind is one of
the best known movies in American history and was set in the time of the Civil War (1930s: At a
Glance 370). Another extremely popular movie was the 1939 musical, The Wizard of Oz, because it
whisked audiences away into a magical land filled with far more hope then their own (1930s: At a
Glance 370). Other movies simply had to do with the current issues and with life at the time. These
movies were influenced by the 1930s, rather than influencing the 1930s. An example of a movie like
this was The Gold Diggers of 1939, which

In the preparation of agarose gel, agarose powder will be mixed with buffer. Agarose powders need to
be weighed first before mixing it with buffer. When 1 gram agarose gel is added, it will be followed
by 100 ml of buffer. The ratio is 1:100 for agarose powder and buffer respectively. Then, the solution
of agarose powder and buffer is put in the microwave in order to melt the agarose until the solution
become clear (Carson Robertson, 2005).
Agarose gel is poured in the casting trays. Actually casting trays is available various in sizes and made
of UV transparent plastic. Finally, the comb is used to make well in the gel where the dyed DNA will
be loaded. According to Bio Rad (n.d.) comb is placed in slots on the casting tray. Usually, ... Show

Besides, EtBr also function to alter DNA mass, rigidity and mobility, so it is one of the best factors
that affect the mobility of the DNA. EtBr need to be stored in the dark because they are sensitive to
light. To mix DNA sample and loading buffer, usually Parafilm is used. The sample will be pipette on
the mini gel. After that, the tank lid is placed, the current will be applied. When stained with Ethidium
bromide, the gel is viewed with an ultraviolet (UV) transilluminator (Environment, Health Safety
2010). Usually for standard transilluminator it will use the wavelength of 302/312 nm (UV B). Then,
the DNA fragment will migrate through the gel and illumination with the UV light will cause the
intercalated dye to fluorescent with a pale pink colour. The exposure of the UV light should be limited
because exposure over the time limit will cause the DNA to damage. Then, the transilluminator setting
will change to the highest in order to photograph the mini gel (Farrell, 2010). The larger fragment will
fluoresce more intensely compare to small fragment because larger fragment has more mass of DNA
so it will take up more dye.
In this Agarose Gel Electrophoresis (AGE) Analysis, we run our entire DNA from the previous
experiment 2A, 2B, and 2C; bacterial, plant and also animal s DNA sample. Based on the Figure

The Nature Of The Atom And A Model
Both JJ Thomson and Ernest Rutherford have contributed a large amount to understand the nature of
the atom and was able to pave the way for future advances. Without their dedication to science and the
hard work they put into forming their scientific method that covered everything from hypothesis to the
investigation we would not have the knowledge that we have today. These scientific methods were
created for the purpose of determining the nature of the atom although both are very different based on
the scientists. Prior to the research of JJ Thomson and Ernest Rutherford a theory pertaining to atoms
and a model was already created. A scientist named John Dalton performed experiments using
chemicals that showed elementary particles that were later discovered to be atoms. Which led to the
creation of his theory that everything is made of atoms and that atoms were the smallest form of
matter. This was investigated overtime as scientists investigated elements and connected between the
two. The discoveries found led to technological methods which were inventions created to find
information about atoms that both JJ Thompson and Ernest Rutherford later used to prove and
disprove their theories. The most important invention being the cathode ray tube which show rays
were traveling in straight lines and an electric charge that passed from the tube to the wires
demonstrated by the glow on the walls of the tube. This information became the basis for both JJ
Thomson and Ernest

The Theme of Hope in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
In Alexander Solzhenitsyn s novel One Day in the Life of
Ivan Denisovich, the strong themes of hope and perseverance are
undercut by the realization that for Ivan there is little or no
purpose in life. This is not to say that the themes of hope and
perseverance do not exist in the novel. There are numerous
instances in the novel where Shukhov is filled with hope.
However, these moments of hope amidst the banal narrative of the
novel raise the interesting question: Are these moments of hope
pointless? The answer to this question may lie more in the
individual human nature of the reader than in Solzhenitsyn s

Much of the Soviet leadership despised
Solzhenitsyn because he instilled within the Soviet people much
of the same hope that is visible in Ivan Denisovich Shukhov.
Solzhenitsyn gave people hope:
Solzhenitsyn s literary mission, the process of giving
voice to the tens of millions of victims of Soviet
terror, went on secretly, even collectively. Much of
Gulag was based on the hundreds of letters and memoirs
that former prisoners mailed to Solzhenitsyn after One
Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was published.
Andropov had an intuitive sense that this new work
could do as much, in its way, to undermine Soviet power
as all the nuclear arsenals in the West. (Remnick 118)
Solzhenitsyn uses the every day occurrences of Ivan Denisovich
Shukhov s life to accentuate this point about humanity.
Shukhov s day began with reveille. Shukhov never slept through
reveille but always got up at once. That gave him about an hour
and a half to himself before the morning roll call (Solzhenitsyn
1). This short amount of time at the beginning of the day was
precious because it was the only time during the day, except for
a few minutes in the evening, that the prisoners had to
themselves. This short amount of time provided hope for the
prisoners in a number of ways. It was a time when anyone who
knew what was what in the camps could always scrounge

A Comparison Of Malcom X And Malcolm X
Malcolm X, over the years, was an interesting man, in the terms of his beliefs during the civil rights
movements. He believed that black Americans should take matters into their own hands. He changed
his views within the first few months of 1964 when he went to Mecca for a pilgrimage. But unlike
Malcolm X, Martin Luther was a Baptist like his father and believed that desegregation can occur by a
non violent protest and marches during the civil rights movements. Not only did he believed that he
also believed that with the combined efforts of blacks and whites desegregation is possible. Within
their speeches or written ones, they are similar in context and techniques as well. The contexts of
Letter to Mecca, by Malcolm X and a speech by Martin Luther, I have a Dream, are similar and
different to what they talk about of the solutions and the overall issue. As for techniques, they used the
same and even different one from one another. First of all, both of them talked about a similar topic
within their speech and letter. The topic is about trying to reach racial equality. In Malcolm X s Letter
to Mecca, he wrote that his experience of living and visiting Mecca. He was utterly speechless and
spellbound by the generous (X 1) that happened to occur around him by people of color (X 1). Before
he went to Mecca and experienced all of the kind nature of people of color, he had never imagined of
the equality of blacks and whites to exist. He continued to write that if this

An Age Of Informational Starvation
We are living in an age of informational starvation. People are seeking for something that is attractive
and glowing to see on their screens. Advertisers found that possibility as an opportunity to shine and
they had created many different works that promote their products. However, it is possible to stop on
one commercial, which is called Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Rafael Nadal, which is the commercial by
Nike, to understand the way they appeal to the audience. First of all, like any other piece of art, the
narrator creates the specific theme that addresses the human eye. That theme provokes a specific
response in human mind, and their thinking provokes the profit if the advertiser was successful.
However, the ethos of the current commercial is obvious Nike Company is one of the leading
industries that deliver sports equipment. Nike represents one of the main players in the sports
equipment market. They create rules, and they create trends. Their credibility is outstanding due to the
fact that they are constantly doing different market examinations that concentrate on trend analysis.
That is their profit that is why their researches show them evident details about marketing trends and
they have enough money to adjust. Speaking of the logos of the article, it is important to mention that
this commercial used the paradox as the rhetorical device so that it is complex to talk about the logical
flow of arguments that they present. Their paradoxical choice figures, their game

Tomorrow Tamer
The story for which the Tomorrow Tamer volume is named is an effective account of the devastating
effects wrought in the life of an African village by the construction of a bridge. On a superficial level
the bridge would seem to be a self evident metaphor for the unification of opposites, a visible token of
the new song to which Africa must dance if she wishes to progress, symbolizing the overcoming of all
the existential and cultural barriers represented as in This Side Jordan by the river. The protagonist of
the story, a young villager named Kofi, dimly recognizes the mediatory significance of the bridge
from the beginning, realizing that when the project gets underway strangers would come here to live
(80). This is exactly what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The villagers conclude that the bridge, clearly, had sacrificed its priest in order to appease the river
(103), and even the white man superintending the project is visited by the unsettling suspicion that the
damn thing almost was alive (103). Kofi s final apotheosis is achieved in his tribal capacity as priest
rather than in his adopted profession as a bridgeman. The man who had tried to identify himself with
the future achieves a paradoxical immortality by becoming assimilated to the most ancient of myths a
man consumed by the gods lives forever (104) while the old gods quietly take up residence in the most
arrogant monuments of modern technology.
The Rain Child weaves into an elaborate counterpoint the many different forms of exile, enlarging on
the implications of the fact that everyone is a stranger somewhere, and not necessarily in the place he
expects to be. The narrator is Miss Nedden, a school teacher who, though English in origin, regards
Ghana as her home. Like Brother Lemon and other white characters in Laurence s African works,
Miss Nedden has come to Africa mainly for myself, after all, hoping to find a place where my light
could shine forth (121), although she at least possesses the insight and the candour to acknowledge her

Students Can Choose More Than One Way
Today, students can choose more than one way to attend school. The ordinary way is by attending a
traditional classroom setting which has been utilized for years. The other option is to attend school by
learning online. This relatively new way of learning is rapidly growing especially with working adults.
Both ways of schooling will allow a student to earn a degree but there are some differences between
the two.
Learning the traditional way consists of sitting in a classroom for hours on end (Bethel University,
n.d., p.4). A traditional classroom allows the student to correspond with the teacher and classmates in
person. Learning in a traditional classroom setting also means the student will have a physical text
book to transport around and possibly other materials like notebooks, pens, paper, etc. (Bethel
University, (n.d.) The traditional classroom will likely involve class participation, homework, reading
assignments, tests, and possibly a few quizzes.
An online setting allows the student to participate in the course work with more agility. You don t have
to slip into a seat at a particular time of the day or night. (Bethel University, n.d., p. 4). The student has
the ease of completing assignments in the comfort of their own home and must be disciplined to
submit the work before the deadline. It is imperative for an online student to manage their own
schedule because there isn t a set time for the student to login and participate. Online classes will

Reflection On Math Lesson
What? For my second lesson, I taught a math lesson on multiplying decimals with zeros in the
product. I wanted students to be able to show that they could multiply with decimals in the product
and I wanted them to be able to explain how they know where to add the decimal point in the answer.
This lesson was part of the unit over decimals. Students will learn to add them, subtract, multiply,
divide, and then take a test for the unit. I decided to teach this lesson because this is what my teacher
had planned for the day and needed me to teach to keep her on track for the test. Honestly, I was
excited to teach a math lesson because it was a great refresher for me. Overall, I was very satisfied
with the way the lesson went. The students were understanding the instruction I delivered and were
giving the answers I had hoped for. The students were on task and engaged for the entire lesson and
when they weren t engaged, I could draw or mention sticks and I would get more active participation.
Before I asked students to work independently or with a partner, I modeled exactly what they should
be doing and how they should do it. This made a huge difference from my first lesson because there
was no confusion. When I had one students come up to the board and share their answer, everyone in
the class had the same answer. While I was formatively checking their understanding, this told me that
the way I was teaching was working because they all understood the problem. I really can not think of
anything that did not go as I had planned or that I was not happy with. Although, there was one point
where my math was wrong because I was not thinking logically. I need to make sure I slow down
while I am teaching to check my own work so I am not teaching the students incorrect information!
The only change I would try and make if I taught this lesson again would be to find a way to make it
more engaging and less teaching instruction out of the book. I feel that with math this is sometimes
challenging, but I think it could be done. Even though I did use multiple means of representation by
doing a whole class discussion, partner work, and independent work, I could have found maybe a
more hands on activity for the students to

Product Management Using Boston Matrix Tool with Product Life Cycle Management
INTRODUCTION: Oil and gas theft and spillage along pipelines are caused by two major
phenomena: damages and ruptures. However, pipeline damages are mainly due to sabotage. Due to
diminished pipeline and aging process of the pipes there will be ruptures in pipeline. In Nigeria oil and
gas theft and spillage occurs due to a number of causes which include corrosion of pipeline and
tankers, sabotage, oil production operations and insufficient or non functional production equipment.
Pipeline rupture is caused due to very old and lack regular inspection and maintenance .As a result it is
causing environmental pollution and wastage of resources. To over come this problem an Engineering
Systems Development Company called Abuja Energy Surveillance (AES) Ltd has developed a new oil
and gas pipeline monitoring system using drones and Geographic Information System. By using
Boston Matrix the company has planned 10 year strategic market share plan that focuses on making
the system a market dominant in energy security and environment pollution management for oil and
gas industry sector in many countries. Boston Matrix: It was developed by the Boston Consulting

supermarket. Sammy, the narrator of A P states, I forgot to say he thinks he s going to be manager

In Braaksma s essay, Some Lessons from the Assembly Line Braaksma states, The most stressful thing
about blue collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight (Braaksma 485). Experiencing
such paranoia about losing a job and also completing hard manual labor has taught Braaksma to
appreciate what he has in life such as his education. Braaksma s experience would push him to advise
Sammy to keep his job because Sammy s job at the A P was secure and easy, labor wise. He would
advise that Sammy take advantage of his job because it is one that many wish they could have.
However, James Lincoln Collier might support Sammy in his decision to quit his job. In Collier s
essay, Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name, Collier states, Each time you try something, you learn,
and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you (Collier 85). Collier would consider Sammy s
decision part of a learning experience. He would advise Sammy to quit his job because it is something
new and would teach Sammy life lessons that would help him in the future. I would advise Sammy to
think his decision through before quitting his job. In the story, A P, it seemed as though Sammy quit
his job rather abruptly for no reason at all. He quit his job to look like a hero in front of Queenie and
her friends but they had already left the store. I would advise Sammy to think

Cartels of Violence During our family holiday vacation to Mexico, I was looking out the window

happened I looked outside and saw a truck flipped over and set on fire with several bullets on the side

  • 2. Pierre Bourdieu Cultural Capital The Social World Continuous assessment 1.1 Sociological Cinema Exercise Cultural Capital, a video by Sociology Live! (2015), embodies the many aspects that define an individual or group s standing within a society. The video begins with an introduction of a french theorist, Pierre Bourdieu, who developed the theory of Cultural Capital . His theory suggests that cultural capital is the cultural knowledge that serves as a currency which helps one navigate culture, hence, alter our experience and opportunities available to us. The video then outlines the various elements that make up cultural capital, including material objects (apparel, cars, personal belongings) and symbolic elements (tastes, manners, skills and credentials). It then focuses on another view of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This view reversed, is also visible with lower class people and low cultural capital. The rising issue outlined in this video and capitalism as a whole, is that people in a society are grouped in a certain hierarchical manner according to their class, status and power. Alternatively, Marx, another renown sociologist defined the capitalist system primarily on modes of production, separating the society with proletariats (workers who perform a certain task to obtain an orderly income) and capitalists (industries or companies who earn money through profit, rent and interest). Marx also believed that inheritance down the generations is a head start for the newer generations to build a higher financial capital as capitalists would have built up a larger inheritance to pass down compared to proletariats (Van Krieken et al. pp.212, 213). Both Marx and aspects of Bourdieu s theories of capitalism indicate that wealth and privilege are primarily contributed to define a group or individuals hierarchical standing within their ... • 3. Discuss the Relationship Between the Principles of... Discuss the relationship between the principles of training, physiological adaptations and improved performance The relationship between the principles of training and physiological adaptations has a significant impact on performance. Many factors need to be addressed in a training program to make it a successful one for a particular athlete and thus improve their performance. The first principles are warm up and cool down. The purpose of any warm up and cool down is to reduce the risk of injury and soreness. For this to be applicable, a warm up must be sustained for no less than 10min and for elite athletes, at least 30min. Included in this warm up must be stretching to loosen up the muscles. There are no physiological adaptations that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These adaptations are relevant because the body is being stressed which leads to more blood being needed by the working muscles. With this increase in stroke volume and cardiac output, it also increases the heart rate. Heart rate is the amount of times the heart beats per minute. This means that the heart is working hard and being progressively overloaded increases the efficiency and will improve the performance of the athlete. Another adaptation is oxygen uptake. When the body is being progressively overloaded oxygen uptake is really important because it is the amount of oxygen being delivered to working muscles. This amount increases when exercise begins but decreases as adaptations occur. This is very similar to lung capacity as lung capacity is the amount of air that the lungs can hold. Another physiological adaptation in relation to progressive overload is haemoglobin levels. Haemoglobin is the substance in the blood that binds to oxygen and transports it around the body. These levels are important because it s telling us how much oxygen and blood is being used and directly relates to stroke volume and oxygen uptake. Muscle hypertrophy is a term that refers to muscle growth together with an increase in the size of muscle cells. For a sprinter this adaptation is very important because it indicates that the muscles have been stimulated and grown and an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Switzerland Immigration Politics Essay examples In order to have a complete understanding of the politics of immigration in Switzerland, it is crucial to realize the impact direct democracy has in shaping public policy and public opinion. Hanspeter Kriesi and Alexander Trechsel, two prominent Swiss political scientists, consider direct democracy not only to be the most crucial institution of the Swiss political system but also the most developed system of its kind in the world, both in terms of significance and in terms of sheer numbers. Swiss voters took part in 321 referendums between 1960 and 2003, over seven per year on average, by far the most numerous of the 47 nations in the Council of Europe. The importance of direct democracy in ensuring the continued salience of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Constitution was revised in 1874, the optional referendum was introduced allowing the holding of a referendum on any change to federal legislation... which can be requested by 50,000 voters or eight cantons within a period of 100 days after the publication of the law. Of the 2181 parliamentary decisions eligible for an optional referendum from 1848 to 2005, only 156 were subject to them. Of these 156, only 46% were successful in rejecting legislation that had been passed by Parliament. The already expansive institution of direct democracy was further extended in 1891 with the introduction of the popular initiative for the partial revision of the Constitution that must also be accepted by a double majority of people and cantons. In order to present a popular initiative to the electorate, organizers must gather 100,000 signatures within eighteen months. Interestingly, popular initiatives can consist of complete proposals for constitutional modifications or merely a proposal that simply states a general goal of changing the Constitution leaving it up to Parliament to implement said goals as it sees fit. Popular initiatives are incredibly diverse, ranging from demands for new footpaths in the Alps to the abolition of the armed forces. Specifically he claimed that if a prisoner commits an offense, they need to be punished; however, the same goes for a prison guard if they, too, commit and offense; they d need to be punished as well. As the interviewee said, People have to understand that there are consequences for their actions, not just the inmates, but the officers as well. Data is stored in tables, in the form of rows and columns and the relationhips between these tables is also stored in the form of a table. The tables, which contain data stored in rows and columns are made using SQL. Before storing data, it is essential to identify relationships among them. This is done so using an Entity Relationship diagram which is a graphical representation that identifies relationships among the various tables. • 9. Construction and Demolition Waste Briefing Paper: Construction and Demolition Waste Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is a significant issue in New Zealand. Teo and Loosemore (2001) maintain: Levels of waste within the construction industry need to be reduced for environmental and economic reasons. Changing people s wasteful behaviour can make a significant contribution (pp.741). This paper defines the CDW issue, significant stakeholders, relevant ethical theories and costs. CDW has increased as construction volumes have risen generally, and following natural disasters. For example, the Canterbury Earthquakes generated a major increase in CDW. Major damage to buildings, rock falls and landslips, liquefaction and major infrastructure damage has left an estimated $7.1 billion [Earthquake Commission] EQC bill, says Mackenzie (2011 pp.33). The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA, n.d.) estimated 8 million tonnes of CDW. CERA (n.d.) points to the construction industry and local authorities working together to find and quickly implement new solutions for recycling or reusing waste. More generally, Level Organisation (2013) noted that demolition and construction processes are the most significant producer of waste as opposed to other stages of buildings lives. Much CDW is seen to be preventable: Most of this dumping of construction waste is unnecessary it has been demonstrated that simply by sorting waste, at least half of it could be diverted from landfills (Level Organisation, 2013). ... • 10. Imperial Decline Causes Causes of Imperial Decline During the period of 600 BCE to 600 CE there was much political unrest throughout the world. This essay will analyze the reason for collapse of once powerful ancient empires by scrutinizing the rulers who led them. By looking at the circumstances of a fallen empire, a person can asses that the neglect of government officials, stressed with vast war expenses, who levy high taxes that lead to peasant uprisings, is the circular chain of events that will always eventually crumble a weak empire. And as specific as they may seem, these crises developed many a time. The circular chain of events almost always begins with a neglectful leader. But neglect can be defined in multiple ways. Emperor Han Huandi of Han China was neglectful in his style of governing. He increased the power of his court eunuchs, thus corrupting the system. Bribery was common. With the government corruption, less time was spent worrying about common folk. Rebellions took place, and Han Huandi continued to ignore his people, not granting them any compromise. • 11. The War On Terrorism During The United States The war on terrorism in the United States began after the September 11 attacks on the United States. Following the war was a series of military campaigns carried out to destroy terrorist organizations in the Middle East. Led by the George W. Bush administration, America made goals for the war on terror to defeat main targets and terrorist leaders such as Osama bin Laden. The invasion of the Middle East was supported by the American people at first. After three more years Saddam Hussein s weapons of mass destruction no longer existed. Multiple terrorist forces fighting Al Qaeda were taken down. However, America has maintained its military presence in the region until present day. According to Will Fight for Oil by Ted Koppel, if production of oil from the Persian Gulf stopped the American economy would be devastated. The american economy runs on oil; a large percentage of the oil we use comes from the Middle East. The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 has not left yet because of the possible dangers of a Middle East without American military presence. Without American supervision the regional instability of the Middle East could be very bad for oil production. To protect the American interests in the region military forces have not been removed. Without their dedication to science and the hard work they put into forming their scientific method that covered everything from hypothesis to the investigation we would not have the knowledge that we have today. These scientific methods were created for the purpose of determining the nature of the atom although both are very different based on the scientists. Prior to the research of JJ Thomson and Ernest Rutherford a theory pertaining to atoms and a model was already created. A scientist named John Dalton performed experiments using chemicals that showed elementary particles that were later discovered to be atoms. Which led to the creation of his theory that everything is made of atoms and that atoms were the smallest form of matter. This was investigated overtime as scientists investigated elements and connected between the two. The discoveries found led to technological methods which were inventions created to find information about atoms that both JJ Thompson and Ernest Rutherford later used to prove and disprove their theories. I wanted students to be able to show that they could multiply with decimals in the product and I wanted them to be able to explain how they know where to add the decimal point in the answer. This lesson was part of the unit over decimals. Students will learn to add them, subtract, multiply, divide, and then take a test for the unit. I decided to teach this lesson because this is what my teacher had planned for the day and needed me to teach to keep her on track for the test. Honestly, I was excited to teach a math lesson because it was a great refresher for me. Overall, I was very satisfied with the way the lesson went. The students were understanding the instruction I delivered and were giving the answers I had hoped for. The students were on task and engaged for the entire lesson and when they weren t engaged, I could draw or mention sticks and I would get more active participation. Before I asked students to work independently or with a partner, I modeled exactly what they should be doing and how they should do it. This made a huge difference from my first lesson because there was no confusion. When I had one students come up to the board and share their answer, everyone in the class had the same answer. While I was formatively checking their understanding, this told me that the way I was teaching was working because they all understood the problem. I really can not think of anything that did not go as I had planned or that I was not happy with. Although, there was one point where my math was wrong because I was not thinking logically. I need to make sure I slow down while I am teaching to check my own work so I am not teaching the students incorrect information! The only change I would try and make if I taught this lesson again would be to find a way to make it more engaging and less teaching instruction out of the book. I feel that with math this is sometimes challenging, but I think it could be done.
