Dexamethasone Research Paper
Figure3: GR distinct binding pocket and dexamethasone recognition:
(A)GR (yellow) form an additional side pocket.
(B) Electron density map of dexamethasone surrounded by GR residues.
(C) Formation of hydrogen bonds (solid arrows), and hydrophobic interactions (dashed lines). For
clarity, the weak hydrogen bond between C736 and C20 ketone is not shown.
(D) The structures of the steroid hormones GR, MR, AR, PR and ER are shown with numbering of the
rings and the key atoms. (Taken from: 1)
Dexamethasone recognition: The dexamethasone binding pocket of GR LBD consists of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
and 10 helices as well as AF 2 helix. Within the crystals, dexamethasone shows a high affinity binding
to the protein binding pocket [7, 1]. This high affinity binding is explained by the ability of
dexamethasone to form both hydrophobic as well as hydrophilic interactions. Each atom of
dexamethasone interacts with at least one of the hydrophobic residues from the GR LBD binding core.
The hydrophilic interactions is formed by hydrogen bonds between the hydrophilic groups (hydroxyl
and carbonyl groups) of dexamethasone with the protein s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
GR binding pocket is able to bind glucocorticoids, while MR binding pocket can bind
mineralocorticoids only. Glucocorticoids (like dexamethasone) have a 17alpha hydroxyl group at their
C17 alpha position, so they are able to form a hydrogen bond with Q642 of the GR LBD. In contrast,
this hydroxyl group is absent at mineralocorticoids, then, GR LBD cannot bind by hydrogen bond to
mineralocorticoids. Furthermore, it was proposed that the leucine (hydrophobic residue) of MR inhibit
the hydrogen bond formation between glucocorticoids and the MR. Obviously, the selectivity of GR to
glucocorticoids is a result of both the side pocket formation and the ability to form hydrogen bonds
with glucocorticoid. [1,

Casey At The Bat Compare And Contrast
In the poem Casey at the Bat and story David and Goliath, a comparison of David and Casey shows
differences and similarities. The first similarity is that David and Casey were both faced with big
problems. One quote of proof from Casey at the Bat that they were both faced with big problems is,
The Outlook wasn t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day. This explains that Casey s team was not
going to win. The second quote of proof from David and Goliath that they were both faced with big
problems is, When the Israelite soldiers saw Goliath, they were scared and ran off. This explains that
David is faced with a big problem because the soldiers were frightened by Goliath, which puts his
village in danger and leaves David to fight Goliath all by himself ... Show more content on

The first difference of David and Casey is that Casey fails and David succeeds. The first quote from
David and Goliath that shows David succeeds is He put a rock in his sling and swung the sling around
by its straps. When he let go of one strap, the rock flew out and hit Goliath on the forehead. It cracked
his skull, and he fell facedown on the ground. 50 David defeated Goliath with a sling and a rock. He
killed him without even using a sword. This explains that David killed Goliath, which is a success for
David and his town. The quote from Casey at the Bat is Casey has struck out. This quote explains that
Casey has failed because he struck out. Secondly, Casey and David is Casey got overconfident and
David believed in himself. Proof that Casey got overconfident from Casey at the Bat is He lightly
doffed his hat. This explains that he was really confident and he believed to much and he was not
being very humble. Another citing of the source from David and Goliath is I ll go out and fight him
myself. This explains that David is brave but not too valiant. Finally, David is humble and Casey is
not. Proof that David is humble is You ve come at me with a sword and a

Rio Grande Rift
The Rio Grande rift is superimposed on a region with a long and complex history of deformation and
heating, which affects the location and com position of the subsequent rift related magmatism (Mack,
Seager, Kieling, 1994).. The development of the Rio Grande rift formed part of a series of Cenozoic
extensional events that affected the whole of the western USA. These events were contemporaneous
with changes in motions of the Farallon and North American plates at the Pacific margin and are
widely thought to be genetically related to them by processes such as back arc spreading. Alternative
hypotheses re late extension to thermal relaxation and gravity spreading of Laramide thickened crust
and magmatism to active asthenospheric upwelling.
The Rio Grande rift lies just to the east of the continental divide between the Great Plains and the
Colorado Plateau and essentially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the end of Laramide crustal shortening and Palaeogene magmatism, the initiation of the
development of the Rio Grande rift occurred between 31 28 million years ago in southern New
Mexico (Berglund et al., 2012).. This rifting propagated northward to northern New Mexico (27 25
million years ago) and Colorado (27 26 Million years ago) (Crow, et.al., 2011). Early crustal extension
involved low angle faulting that formed broad basins and predates magmatism at the rift axis. This
early phase development of the Rio Grande rift lasted for 10 to 12 million years and was followed by a
lull in volcanic activity between 17 and 14 Million years ago. This period of quiescence is apparent
throughout the whole of the western USA, and it marks a change from volcanism that was dominated
by calc alkaline rhyolites and andesites to bimodal assemblages of basalt and rhyolite. It also marks a
change in direction of crustal extension from WSW ENE to E W, that was accompanied by a decrease
in the width of the zone of

Operant Conditioning And Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning is defined as a learning process that occurs when a biological response is paired
with a neutral stimulus in reference of Brembs and Heisenberg (2000). An age old example is Ivan
Pavlov conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell by giving them food each time it rang. In
doing such, the dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell to meal time. Operant conditioning is a
spin on classical conditioning, whereas instead of trying to pair a response with a stimulus, a direct
behavioral outcome is achieved with reinforcements or
punishments.
In classical conditioning there are what is called an unconditioned stimulus and an unconditioned
response. The unconditioned response is an unlearned response that occurs naturally in reaction to the
unconditioned stimulus. Such as when someone jerks their hand away when they burn themselves on a
hot stove. There is also a conditioned stimulus and a conditioned response. An example of this would
be getting hungry when you smell the scent of food. The body knows that usually when the smell of
food is around it is time to eat, therefore your stomach rumbled in anticipation of the meal. Sometimes
classical conditioning is referred to as respondent conditioning.
In operant conditioning the goal is to have a specific behavioral outcome. Positive reinforcement
causes the strengthening of a response by adding something. Such as getting a treat after doing
something good. Negative reinforcement is the act of

Fuzzy Thinking Analysis
In IT Foundations, I was assigned by Mrs. Baumaster to watch the video Fuzzy Thinking. The speaker
in this video is an Astrophysicist by the name of Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the video, Fuzzy Thinking he
talked about many things like what was wrong with the misspellings of the word Cat and about his
choice between hiring two workers. The video did not seem very interesting at first but as I watched it,
the video got more and more interesting. Tyson is a very good presenter in the video because he made
it interesting and fun to listen to him. All in all, this video was a great way to get his message out on
how people think. I answered 5 questions that Mrs. Baumaster asked about the video Fuzzy Thinking.
Fuzzy Thinking is when people are not thinking straight. I know this is correct because right after he
said fuzzy thinking he told the audience the definition of it. The misspelling of the word cat is a very
complex question. One misspelling is spelled as XQT and the other is spelled as KAT but they are
considered equally as wrong even though one sounds like cat and the other does not. Tyson s is an
astrophysicist which is similar to being an astronomer. Astrophysicists study the physics of space. I
think this is a very cool job and it would also be very interesting as well as fun. The two job
candidates were very different from one another. The first job candidate had knowledge of the
building because they studied architecture beforehand. They knew the spire is 155ft

The Populist Party
During the time of the Progressive Era, the Populist Party made tremendous gains in the political and
social aspect of American society. Discontent with the economic and political way the country was
structured, the Populists sought to reform the government using a system of initiative and referendum.
As a form of direct democracy, initiative and referendum was a way to give the power back to the
people by utilizing local and state governments. The first part of the reform was the initiative, which is
usually a petition signed by a number of voters to bring about a public vote and opinion on a certain
amendment, both state and constitutional. This initiative eventually sets the path for the referendum,
which is when the proposed law is enacted.

The Nature Of The Gods
Cartoons often depict a character with a subconscious angel and devil on each shoulder hyping up the
personality trait the character should act on. These subconscious beings influence the characters to act
on their impulse thoughts and reveal their true character. In the Iliad, the gods acted as these
subconscious beings and were portrayed with humanistic qualities. They intervened or refused to
intervene based on their emotional attachments and were the final push of the humans actions
throughout the poem. The gods and humans similar qualities allowed the humans to exercise free will
instead of being puppets to the gods. The comparative personalities allowed Homer to use the gods
and divinity to explain certain characters behaviors.
The subconscious angel and devil in cartoons contain the same personality traits of the cartoon
character the same way the gods in the Iliad reflect the mortals. The gods human like characteristics
compare well to a subconscious being internally molding thoughts and desires into actions. This little
push of encouragement is seen in Book Two when Zeus sent a dream to Agamemnon suggesting he
should attack the Trojans immediately. This arrogant idea of attacking the Trojans immediately with
little preparation isn t too far fetched from Agamemnon s normal behavior. In Book One, Agamemnon
went against warrior code of returning Chryseis, his war prize, after her father offered up a ransom for
her return. This refusal results in Apollo

A Good Example Of The Education Reform
The education reformed that happened that changed this nation for the better giving them hope. The
children reading and writing for themselves. People that enjoy teaching the children giving them the
attention and help they need and along the way learning too.
As a public school student, I think that reform is needed because we need change in the nation we
need to get rid of things and replace them with new things . Change the direction in which things are
happening good examples of this are education reform, Jail reform, and female equal rights reform.
These all played a really big roll in the nation changing for the better.

This means that people that were not able to afford the products can now buy them causing an increase
of sales in The United States, Mexico and Canada. No tariffs allowed businesses to compete in the
world marketplace to expand and deliver customer goods. Big manufacturing companies saw that the
cheap labor was available in Mexico and moved their manufacturing companies. Many of these
companies had unions and the unions were negotiating for higher wages. This could have caused a
company to go bankrupt or invest in machines (robots) to replace people. This in turn led to
manufacturing companies moving to Mexico in order to make profit and continue lower prices. As a
business owner I would agree that just keeping a company afloat is not good business. Profits need to
be met or company can go bankrupt and jobs will be lost. Many people lost their jobs due
manufacturing companies moving to Mexico for profit. About 700,000 jobs were lost in the United
States with 55,000 being in Texas. Pg 18. Texas Public Policy released a study that El Paso is reported
to be hit the hardest by NAFTA. About 10,000 workers have been effected by the loss of jobs, yet the
El Paso region has an increase of exports creating 38,000 jobs since NAFTA . Economic growth is
seen in El Paso. El Paso is growing and seems to be under construction for the last 5 years. The
transportation industry is booming as evident by new businesses being built such as motels and
convenient stores near the main highways. Construction to accommodate the transportation industry
creates new jobs which leads to economic growth. In the last five years of traveling to El Paso and
back to Corpus Christi, no matter the time of day, the highways are busy with big truck/18 wheelers.

Black Lung
The black lung movement was a movement formed in the late 1960 s in which the miners fought for
the health benefits to cover black lung disease. Black lung is directly caused by mining and working
with coal. Mildred Mullins wrote this poem and hung it on the coffin of her dead husband in the
Capital to display what was going on, Compensation we are asking, While alive and still gasping;
When life is o er and hymns are sung, Then they ll know we have black lung.( Charleston Gazette 15)
The miners felt that since their job caused this disease that they should be compensated for it. The coal
companies felt that mining did not cause this lung disease and that the miners were just making it up.

Blasting itself produced immense quantities of mineral particles. The common practice of returning to
the work face soon after the detonation of charges meant entering an area filled with particulate
matter. (Derickson 3) Also, as labors transported, unloaded, and cleaned the extracted material dust
was inhaled even though they were away from the mine. So no matter what technique used the coal
dust still made it in the air and into the miners lungs. There were no safety regulations in place about
how long to wait after blowing up coal, no regulations about how many particulates in the air were
safe, no mask or safety precautions and no mandatory venting. Although some of these things were
easily usable to the safety the company felt it was too costly. An elaborate system of fans and blowers
was too costly , so the miner had to pay for the bad ventilating by miners asthma and other ailments
caused by bad air. (Derickson 4) Basically the coal operators did not care enough about the miners
safety to provide vents and things that could have helped the air quality. Once black lung was
discovered the movement began. Three studies done by the U.S. Public Health Service between 1924
and 1945 failed to bring recognition of black lung as a problematic condition. American medical
opinion was that miner s asthma reflected a normal condition of mine work and actually posed no
serious problems. Some doctors even went so far as to claim that coal

Gender Codes In Advertising Have Hugely Impacted My Own
Gender codes in advertising have hugely impacted my own views and how I currently interact with
friends, families, and even strangers that I see walking around on the streets. It is pointed out by Sut
Jhally (2009) that the reason for this being, masculinity and femininity are strongly portrayed in
advertisements as two completely opposite things. In most ads, men are shown as strong human
beings with complete control of whatever problems may arise to them whereas women are shown the
complete opposite. Their bodies are usually in positions that suggest that they re being controlled by
men and are completely dependant on them not being able to face troubles that may arise (Jhally,
2009). This expectation of what masculinity is, is shown all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Advertisements not only change your perspective of others but in fact changes theirs as well towards
you. When advertisements show men, they depict them as strong, action ready, emotionless characters
that are muscular and almost like animals as shown in The Codes of Gender: Identity and Performance
in Pop Culture. This sets a standard for other men to fit into and not doing so has dire consequences.
When walking around and interacting with new people, I automatically try to fit into these criteria that
the advertisements have created to define masculinity because if I don t then I feel like they judge me
based on what ideologies they ve been brought up with, which is mostly like the same advertisements
that separates masculinity and femininity completely. I believe this has been encoded to us so
thoroughly that if you don t succumb to his categorization then you re not as approachable compared
to someone who is.
Women are also sexualized in a majority of advertisements which consequentially alters the thoughts
of men around us into having certain expectations for them. Goffman (2009) argues that women are
often shown lying down in vulnerable sexually available positions, and even biting on their lips and
pulling on their skirts in advertisements. Personally, I have seen this effect my friends because as men
they ve fallen into this trap of the ritualization of subordination women. When we re in school
together walking down the hallways they always judge

Durkheim and the Relevance of His Theories in Modern Society
Treat social facts as things is an expression that epitomises the works of Emile Durkheim. This essay
focuses on four main sociological concepts proposed by the functionalist Emile Durkheim; the
division of labour; mechanical and organic solidarity; anomie and suicide, and examines their
relevance in contemporary society.
Along with Marx and Weber, Durkheim is considered one of the founding members of modern
sociology. He is also credited with making sociology a science through his application of scientific
and empirical research. Durkheim believed that sociology should be seen as a science separate from
other sciences such as psychology, by studying social facts objectively as things. (Kiviston, 2011)

(McDonald, 2009)
Organic solidarity arose as a result of the industrial revolution when society became more multifaceted
and new ways of working emerged. This saw a decline in the collective conscience regarding shared
morals and beliefs as society began to progress and expand. The division of labour that arises as a
result of organic solidarity is complex and varied, resulting in people becoming more individualistic
and yet also interdependent. Society s social bonds now centred around the fact that people were
dependant on each other for the good and services required in their day to day lives. (McDonald,
2009)
As organic solidarity is typical of complex, industrialised societies, Durkheim s theory is very
applicable to modern life and the first world in particular. Individuality is a major feature of people
living in the western world today e.g. the USA, UK, and Ireland. This is evident in our political and
social thinking. Much emphasis is placed on personal rights and the belief that nothing is more
important than us. (Hughes et al, 1995) Meanwhile we are not self sufficient; we rely heavily on the
expertise of thousands globally to live our daily lives e.g. the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the
cars we drive etc. (Macionis and Plummer, 2005)
A huge increase in individualism came about because of organic solidarity resulting in a breakdown of
moral and ethical boundaries

Similarities Between Roger And Me By Emile Durkheim
General Motors, booming and blooming, the largest corporation in the world took place in Flint,
Michigan. For so long, GM was a major function of the community socially and economically.
Suddenly, General Motors CEO Roger Smith took action, then terminated several plantations in Flint
as well as thousands of jobs. For this reason, Michael Moore made it his mission to record the
consequences of closing the GM plants in Flint. As well as his quest to talk to the GM chairman,
Roger Smith, in the movie Roger and Me. In this essay, using Durkheim s perspective and Roger and
Me, we will analyze how the division of labor can functionally shape a society within a certain period
of time. Significantly, Emile Durkheim was one of the three major theoretical thinkers of sociology. In
effect, the functionalism perspective derives from the analyses of Emile Durkheim. The functionalist
perspective is molded by different parts working together. As an expert in studying the social

The Futility Of Dreaming By John Steinbeck
Sydney Pamela Larter

English ENG1D: Block 7
February 5, 2015
The Futility of Dreaming
As the late Osho believed, And desires are never here and now they are non existential. They are just
mental, in the mind. And they cannot be fulfilled because their very nature is to move into the future.
John Steinbeck s novella, Of Mice and Men explores this theme of futile desire through various
relationships and character complexes. This fictional story begins by introducing two men with a
relationship built from the very foundations of love. As the novel progresses, we begin questioning
innate truths. Steinbeck uses his literary prowess to entwine us within a story of loneliness, loss and
morality. The characters hopes and dreams, regardless of outcome, are a mechanism of survival and a
desire to lead something other than an otherwise inconsequential existence.
Steinbeck presents dreams as a tool to aid the men of the ranch s contentment. They give a sense of
purpose, a reward for long days of hard labor on the ranch. The idea of dreams prolonging survival
and happiness is best portrayed by the dream and relationship shared by Lennie and George. Their
mutual dream to live offa the fatta the lan (Steinbeck 57) brings to light their need of other s
companionship to alleviate isolation and loneliness, and to make their dream seem more realistic. To
immerse oneself in this idyllic fantasy world with acres of vegetable garden, and rabbits, was the

set of ideals for fiction, such as the metafiction, the fable like representation in novels, the pastiche,

Postmodernism and Consumer Society . He questions postmodernism in society as it creates the new

The authoritative viewpoint symbolizes the reliable and the unreliable narrator, which shows the

modern literature its explosion into a host of a distinct private styles and mannerism foreshadows
deeper and more general tendencies in social life as a whole (Jameson 1849). It is normal for a
postmodern text to have a hidden viewpoint as it creates the complexity of the narrative, and portrays

The Crucible and The Salem Witch Trials by Arthur Miller...
Arthur Miller wrote plays as a way of showing people the real picture of what life was really like
during the Great Depression and after World War II. Before the Great Depression many Americans
were living in a significant time period, the Roaring Twenties. People had radios, automobiles, and
movies with sounds. Then it all suddenly came to an end with the Stock Market Crash, leading to the
Great Depression. During the Great Depression, Americans faced poverty, and had no income because
jobs weren t available. Throughout his life Miller influenced many people with his plays, and his
contributions to this day because people want to read and understand what was truly happening in past
history. For example, The Crucible is a play about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, their marriage spiraled downward and they eventually divorced. While Miller was married
to his first wife, he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, who later would become his wife. Marilyn
Monroe was a great influence in his life inspiring him to write After the Fall (1964), which was an
open portrayal of his marriage with Monroe.
Arthur s purpose for writing literature was to unmask the problems and issues of capitalism so the
people could have a fair understanding of the truth but in his plays rather than newspapers and
magazines. In the nineteen fifty s, Miller was starting to go downhill. During this time, one of Millers
most popular and recognized works; The Crucible was playing on Broadway. The Crucible showed a
relationship with the Communist Red Scare that America was facing during this. The Communist Red
Scare took place shortly after the end of World War I. It was a nationwide fear of communist,
socialists, and other fears America was facing. Since the Red Scare was such a big deal to many
Americans during this time in American history, Millers face drastically declined. With the production
of Millers, The Crucible, it brought more attention and suspicion on Miller. In the middle of the
nineteen fifty s, he was called to testify in front of the House Committee on Un American Activity,

strategic pivot present for an entrepreneurial company? The decision to pivot from a biotechnology

in the history of Chromatin. By inserting itself into the multi billion dollar market for sorghum, the
company vastly increased its potential for profit. However, the leaders of Chromatin certainly did not
take the decision likely. As Prof. Copenhaver outlined in his January 14 lecture, a vast number of
factors needed to be taken into account before transitioning into Chromatin s current business model.

Copenhaver and the leadership of Chromatin evidently felt that the company was capable of

Chromatin s transition represents a successfully executed strategic pivot; it considerably broadened

Social Media Good Or Bad Essay
Have you ever had a good or bad experience with social media? Have you ever been a part of a protest
that was started on social media? I think that social media is a good thing because you can have so
much fun on it and even make friends on in. Without that you would be limited to the kids in your
neighborhood and in some places there are not a lot of kids that you can make friends with or they do
not live close so you have to drive there. That is all fixed with social media. Like recently I have found
some friends on social media that I play games with. They are super nice and without social media I
would have never had that experience I would have to play be myself all the time and have no one to
talk to. But now I have the chance to make friends and have fun with them even tho they live far away.
Also colleges and most jobs look at your social media account to see what kind of person you are and
if you are able to work so not only can you have fun but you can also potentially make money from it
and you can make friends. Things like Facebook are so convenient to talk with friends or family
without that we would need to call them and that is just so much harder to do then ... Show more

But you can aways friend you child on Facebook to protect them. Even tho they know what to do to be
safe online and what to do if something bad hapens but the odds of that happening is very small. Also
people think that social media is a waste of time but that is not true becuse you can learn so much
online and find so many cool and interesting things about things you did not even know existed. Also
you can buy things online so you do not have to go look for it in a store and have it not be there which
is a big waste of time. With the web you can buy things that you know they have and it comes right to
you. Al you have to do is wait for it to come to your house and that is

Getty Museum Vs. A Walk At Dusk
Connected in Origin, but Different in Approach Art is not only about what you see, it s about what you
feel when you look at it. Walking through a museum, it s like walking through emotions. There are so
many different feelings and emotions you get depending on the work of art you re experiencing. Both
works of arts I got to experience at the Getty museum were very interesting and unique. The first work
of art was A Walk at Dusk (1830 1835) by German artist Caspar David Friedrich. Its medium was oil
on canvas with dimensions of 33.3 x 43.7 cm. The second work of art was Mornington Crescent with
the Statue of Sickert s Father in law, 1966 by German artist Frank Auerbach. Its medium was also oil
but on a Masonite attached to auxiliary wooden framework with dimensions of 122 x 152.5 cm. At a
first look both paintings seem extremely different but when you look closer, deep in their core they are
quite similar. Both paintings depict a really meaningful place, but in A Walk at Dusk the place is ...

A Walk at Dusk is a very small painting so you experience it more at a personal level. One must be
really close to it to appreciate it s detail. It s a more inviting painting, which makes sense since it s
more of a spiritual connection the viewers will have with it. On the opposite the Mornington Crescent
is a bigger painting and it s also intimidating when looking at it. You don t really want to or have to
get close to it. The vibrant and intense colors make it more uncomfortable for the viewer. This might
be done so that the viewers can physically feel what s happening in the scene, it s not really a place
one wants to be at. The emotions these paintings evoke were very similar. In both painting s you see
themes of darkness and pain. Both portrayed very melancholic events of suffering and sorrow yet in
both you get this small but significant sense of hope that it s the take away

Differences Of An Exemplary Citizen
An Exemplary citizen
What does being a good citizen mean exactly? There are many factors that will affect if one is viewed
as a one. Being considered a good citizen will depend on the country as every country is unique and
sees some aspects differently compared to others. The United States of America and China share
similarities and differences through their preamble, constitution, and citizenship. Similarly, these
countries use their preamble to create a broad proposal of what a good citizen is. Both serve as a guide
for what their constitution will be discussing as well. In addition to this each preamble has a part that
explains where consent is derived from. Comparably they both proclaim that the power comes from
the people. The United States express the We the People of the United States statement, whereas
China claims that All power in the People s Republic of China belongs to the people. These words are
proof to both countries claim to be a democracy. A functioning democracy is the form of government
that provides its citizens with lots of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. Meaning that because of
this both groups of people are encouraged to be very involved as the power is coming from them.
Although there are several similarities, differences can be found in the format or structure of the
preambles. The United States preamble is significantly smaller compared to China s. In general, the
United States prefer the succinct version as it allows the reader

Figurative Language In Goblin Market
Goblin Market is a narrative unlike other poems. The two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, were narrating the
story to their children. And since this poem is a narrative, it is a very long poem; it contains twenty
eight stanzas and one hundred and thirty nine lines. But like most poems, Goblin Market has unique
structure, language, themes, symbols, and figurative language. The structure and style of this narrative
is extravagant. The rhyme is one factor that contributes to the uniqueness of the style of the poem.
Christina Rossetti provides very vivid details, from the smallest to largest things. She describes the
fruit and the goblins, from the color and shape of each fruit to the looks and personality of each of the
goblins. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, it is used to describe Lizzie s positive actions to show the importance of them. Simile is
one of the most used types of figurative languages in this poem. Like a lily in a flood. (Rossetti, 409)
this quote is inferring that a beauty and innocence is being surrounded and devoured by an evil or
horror of the goblins. Like a beacon left alone in a hoary roaring sea. (Rossetti, 412 413) In these
lines, the setting of the passage was very dangerous like the waves in the ocean, but she was still left
unharmed despite the violence and danger. Like a rock of blue veined stone lashed by tides
obstreperously. (Rossetti, 410 411) The imagery in this poem gives true and detailed insight on the
character of Laura, and shows how important strength and innocence develops in the passage. Imagery
is used when goblins furiously attack Lizzie. Close beleaguered by a fleet mad to tug her standard
down (Rossetti, 420 421) and royal virgin town (Rossetti, 418) are two great examples and uses of
imagery. In these two lines, an image of Lizzie defending her home of sorts against an attack, and she
stands her ground to defend it against the

The Death Of Drunk Driving
Drinking and Driving has been around just as long as drugs have, yet drunk driving takes more lives
than drugs do per year. Last year in 2014, 9967 people were killed in car crashes. There was 3464
cocaine related deaths during the same period. Stricter drinking and driving laws were only put into
law after the Carollton bus disaster happened. In 1988 a drunk driver driving the wrong way in
Kentucky hit a school bus where 27 people died and dozens more were injured. In the aftermath,
Mothers Against Drunk Driving was started and throughout the 80 s drunk driving became a hot topic.
At that time alcohol related accidents totaled around 100,000 a year. Deaths related to illegal drug
overdose, AIDS, or violence associated with the illegal drug trade totaled up to 21, 000 per year.
Sentencing for drunk drivers typically only spend two days in jail the first time and up to ten days the
second. Drunk driving carries a far greater risk of violent death than the use or sale of illegal drugs,
but the social response to drunk driver s generally emphasized keeping the person functional and in
society, while attempting to respond to the dangerous behavior through treatment and counseling.
People charged with drug offenses, are typically charged with felonies and sentenced to prison. At that
time there were not first and second chances with a few days in jail like it was for drinking and
driving. One of the main reasons for this disparity is that white men account for the majority of

Definition Of Love
We all have different opinions on love whether it exists or not. A certain number of people in the
world believe in love . The ones that don t believe it exists all have one concept on how love works
but different meaning. In other words, they all phrase it differently but come up with the same
conclusion. The same goes for the ones that do believe in it, the only difference is that they have the
same concept and meaning. There is no such thing as love for if there were why do our loved ones
abuse us, frame us, or even lie to us in our faces or about us. Love, people say as they beat us to plump

That s what we need to figure out by our self, but while we are at it. When we are dating someone we
should ask our self this Do I trust that person to the whole existence of my heart? Can I trust them to
not cheat, lie, frame or beat/abuse me? If we took a while to think about it, then we don t love them or
trust them. Love ain t love without trust, too bad once I trusted everyone and loved everyone but now
the max I feel is like. There is no such notion as love because to be honest can someone really tell me
what it is without looking it up or going off of what everyone had told us or thought. Can we say I can
lie and die for my family, or that I won t rat them out for a billion dollars? Some say they can but truth
be told we all will do it in a heartbeat because we are selfish creatures. Love only exist in fairy tales
just like magic, there s no such notion or will ever be. We as the world are all delusional, we think we
love someone because of these lies being passed down from generation to generation. Just so we can
spend more money on people or make people believe they ain t worthy of such great love . Seriously,
can we honestly say love is so great, no because it s not and it is just an excuse some use to cover up
an obsession of someone else? Or to help us get out of our shell to be a better version of our self.
Hence, the real reason someone says they love us is so we can help them with something, but we as
people are so gullible that we fall for it. One day the world will know and realize, that love doesn t
exist. Then that will be the day the whole world wake

Impact Of The Renaissance
Whenever I think about the renaissance, I think of the of the dark ages. The Renaissance was a period
in European history, that took place during the 14th through the 17th century. Accordant Leonardo da
Vinci he describes the culture of the Renaissance as the cultural bridge between the Middle Ages .
Renaissance started in Italy during the period of medieval, then it slowly spread throughout Europe.
The term Renaissance over the years, has become synonymous with ideas of expanding, rebirth and
cultural expansion. To begin with, a renaissance is a revolution of the rebirth of ideas within a country
s individuals: self awareness, art, architecture, religion, and science. Throughout this paper am going

In Italy, the humanist educational program won rapid acceptance and, by the mid 15th century, many
of the upper classes had received a humanist education. Some of the highest officials of the Catholic
church were humanists with the resources of a mass important library. The much humanist effort went
into improving the understanding and translations of the biblical and early Christian texts. According
to the American Humanist Association, define humanism as is a progressive life stance that, without
supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives capable of
adding to the greater good of humanity.
The romantic music movement was an intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the
19th century in Europe, that strengthened in reaction to the industrial revolution. It was a revolt
against social and political norms of the ages of enlightenment. The romantic music movement was
embodied most strongly in the visual art, music, and literature, but had a major impact on history and
education. In the romantic period, music became more expressive and emotional, expanding to
encompass literary, artist, and philosophical themes. During the romantic period, music often took on
a much more nationalistic purpose. During the late 19th century there was a dramatic expansion in the
size of the orchestra and the diversity of instruments used in this ensemble. The public concert became
a key part of urban middle class society,

Life Of Pi Diction Essay
The passage chosen is an extract from pages 310 311 in Life of Pi by Yann Martel, taken place shortly
after Pi arrives on the island. The purpose of the passage is crucial in both the reader s and Pi s
frightening realization of the carnivorous nature of the island, as Pi finds a set of human teeth hidden
in accumulation of leaves. As the reader unravels the passage and subsequently realizes its horrors,
one finds that the Martel successfully uses structure with the transitioning to very short paragraphs.
Language, or rather the use of repetition, places great emphasis into Pi s unravelings, and imagery,
serving as the context for the critical moments, help convey the importance of this watershed moment.
Overall, the use of these devices ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a very small portion of the picture being described. Nothing about the surroundings, what Pi
is feeling, or anything else offering the reader imagery of other sorts. Instead, the beginning of the
passage is very focused on the fruit and descriptions of Pi unravelling the fruit. This detailed narration
is very evident in excerpts in the 3 paragraph Martel uses to show the reader that Pi is peeling the fruit,
After a few layers I came to leaves that had lost their stems and were flatly glued to the ball. I used my
fingernails to catch their edges and pull them off. Sheath after sheath of leaf lifted, like the skins off an
onion. I could simply have ripped the fruit apart I still call it that for lack of a better word but I chose
to satisfy my curiosity in a measured way. (310) This imagery is effective in forcing the reader to
focus, and put all their attention onto the step by step progression, successfully setting the stage for the
reader to come across what would be the climax of the scene. Ultimately, in the creation of this
important scene that changes the course of the novel, Yann Martel uses literary techniques to bring out
the its horrors, through his manipulation of the speed, by painting a vivid image in one s mind as it
happens through very descriptive text, and repetition to really emphasize the

Berkeley Personal Statement
You made a mistake. I am sure that hundreds of students and parents have spoken these sentiments to
the admission department at UC Berkeley in the course of the past few weeks. I am sure that
thousands more throughout the state, throughout the country even, have laughed, cried, and yelled
these words, being sure to diminish your institution with each remark. Personally, I hold Berkeley in
the highest regards as far as colleges go; having been a life long Bay Area resident, I have come to
cherish the diverse atmosphere and thirst for knowledge in Berkeley and the surrounding area entropy.
It is in this high esteem for the university and the community that I write this candid letter. When a
school such as Berkeley is so inundated with qualified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A final, more personal note as to why I so desire to attend Berkeley over a few of my other
possibilities: in the middle of November, in the midst of completing the bulk of my college
applications, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Combined with applying to college,
completing homework, staying on top of classes, and keeping my commitments to extra curricular
activities, the knowledge that my mom has a serious form of cancer made those few months all the
more stress filled and difficult. Thank the Lord, my mom has successfully completed radiation and
continues to see specialists regularly, solidifying her status in my mind as the strongest person I know.
Going off to college, I am going to miss my mom dearly, and she will dearly miss me. I ve always
been very close with her, and I recognize the ambivalence within her of wanting me to stay close to
home in the Bay Area while wanting what s best for me. I feel similar sentiments, having the strong
urge to protect and care for my mom, visiting on a regular basis, while desiring to grow as a person
into the man I strive to be. Berkeley would be the perfect choice of school in relation to both aspects:
its proximity to my home town of Livermore, as well as the educational opportunities Berkeley

Class Moe The Reasons for the Success of the Bolsheviks and the Outcomes for Their Success
The Bolsheviks played quite a successful role in the October Revolution. There were many reasons
that helped the Bolsheviks seize power and transform Russia into a modern socialist society namely,
the weakness of the provisional government, Lenin s great leadership, Trotsky s control, and finally,
the Bolsheviks successful propaganda. These acts shaped the Bolshevik Party and gained it social,
political, and economic support from the lower classes. This all resulted in both the creation of the
Soviet Union and the Civil War. The Bolsheviks went from being an insignificant radical party to a
political ruling majority.
Firstly, The Provisional Government was a temporary government for Russia ... Show more content on

In addition to that, the Petrograd Soviet released many orders refusing workers and soldiers to obey
the Provisional Government unless the Soviet agreed. This weakened the Provisional Government s
power as it did absolutely nothing in trying to end the Soviets power.
The Provisional Government harmed itself with many bad decisions and not having the ability to
control the numerous problems in Russia. The Provisional Government s bad decision of continuing
the war led to inflation in the economy, bad living conditions for the lower classes. The great demand
of food for the soldiers led to extreme hunger issues for the peasants and workers. Therefore, the
peasants anger made them attack and capture nobles lands. The Provisional Government couldn t
manage to end the issues, as it sent troops to take back the lands from the peasants and set up Death
Squads to execute the deserting soldiers. These acts lost the people s support and faith in the

High priority issues for SOUTHCOM and partner nations can differ despite their long history of

regional impunity commissions with the highest priority nations being in El Salvador and Honduras,
where everyone is charged with crimes and those found guilty could be held accountable regardless of
their political affiliation; (2) the reformation of political institutions to increase governability due to

The Reflection Of Achieving College Success In College
Achieving College Success has been a very positive journey for me. Prior to the course, I was mostly
a positive thinker, and had overcome several things in my life. However, the class provided me with
strategies useful in pushing forward in all life circumstances. Many negative thoughts run through my
head, as is true for everyone else. It was important to know how to control them and use my negative
experiences to better myself. I also learned how to set positive goals that will positively benefit me,
and to set a deadline to achieve my goals. I feel much more organized and confident after taking this
course. I feel like I can face anything and come out of it with a positive take away or goal, and
building off every experience will always be a goal now. This class gives great advice for achieving
success in all major life goals. The main, and probably most important concept I learned was the
Creator idea. This means that, When you accept personal responsibility, you believe you can create
everything in your life. (Downing, 43) I knew I could create many positive things in the world
beforehand. I had a migraine for over 3 years toward the end of middle school, and in the beginning of
high school. I should have died at birth, but was given a test trial medication that saved my life. I had
childhood epilepsy that went away, and I have a disabled mother and a dead sister. Perseverance and
coming back from trouble have been the qualities that have characterized my life up to

Rock Hard Abs Research Paper
.Doing crnches or working on an ab machine will get rid of belly fat.
You have to work out all the surrounding areas to tighten up and most likely change the existing eating
habits to a healthier diet. I think the media pushes this myth because a lot of people want to think its
that simple and they will buy what ever machine or exercise plan that claims to give you rock hard abs
. One note that needs to be added to this myth is that you cannot just work out your abs and see results
abs are a very difficult area of muscle to visually achieve and it takes more diet and work all around
since they are located in the center of the body. You have to burn fat to see the muscle underneath.
2. When it comes to working out, you ve got to feel some pain if you re going to gain any benefits.
no pain no gain This is a dangerous quote to feed off of. It shouldn t hurt to workout or exercise and if
it does then there is something wrong or an underlying issue that needs to be addressed before
continuing to workout. I think a huge factor as to why this is an ongoing myth that is being pushed in
the fitness world is to be a tough guy . You should never be exercising at a level of pain.

the body s natural response to cool your skin and regulate internal body temperature. I think this myth

strenuous workout. One thing to add to the articles is to inform people when you lose water weight by
sweating you re mainly just losing water weight which you will gain back quickly, and of course the
actual reason the body sweats as stated

  • 2. Dexamethasone Research Paper Figure3: GR distinct binding pocket and dexamethasone recognition: (A)GR (yellow) form an additional side pocket. (B) Electron density map of dexamethasone surrounded by GR residues. (C) Formation of hydrogen bonds (solid arrows), and hydrophobic interactions (dashed lines). For clarity, the weak hydrogen bond between C736 and C20 ketone is not shown. (D) The structures of the steroid hormones GR, MR, AR, PR and ER are shown with numbering of the rings and the key atoms. (Taken from: 1) Dexamethasone recognition: The dexamethasone binding pocket of GR LBD consists of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 helices as well as AF 2 helix. Within the crystals, dexamethasone shows a high affinity binding to the protein binding pocket [7, 1]. This high affinity binding is explained by the ability of dexamethasone to form both hydrophobic as well as hydrophilic interactions. Each atom of dexamethasone interacts with at least one of the hydrophobic residues from the GR LBD binding core. The hydrophilic interactions is formed by hydrogen bonds between the hydrophilic groups (hydroxyl and carbonyl groups) of dexamethasone with the protein s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... GR binding pocket is able to bind glucocorticoids, while MR binding pocket can bind mineralocorticoids only. Glucocorticoids (like dexamethasone) have a 17alpha hydroxyl group at their C17 alpha position, so they are able to form a hydrogen bond with Q642 of the GR LBD. In contrast, this hydroxyl group is absent at mineralocorticoids, then, GR LBD cannot bind by hydrogen bond to mineralocorticoids. Furthermore, it was proposed that the leucine (hydrophobic residue) of MR inhibit the hydrogen bond formation between glucocorticoids and the MR. Obviously, the selectivity of GR to glucocorticoids is a result of both the side pocket formation and the ability to form hydrogen bonds with glucocorticoid. [1, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Casey At The Bat Compare And Contrast In the poem Casey at the Bat and story David and Goliath, a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities. The first similarity is that David and Casey were both faced with big problems. One quote of proof from Casey at the Bat that they were both faced with big problems is, The Outlook wasn t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day. This explains that Casey s team was not going to win. The second quote of proof from David and Goliath that they were both faced with big problems is, When the Israelite soldiers saw Goliath, they were scared and ran off. This explains that David is faced with a big problem because the soldiers were frightened by Goliath, which puts his village in danger and leaves David to fight Goliath all by himself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first difference of David and Casey is that Casey fails and David succeeds. The first quote from David and Goliath that shows David succeeds is He put a rock in his sling and swung the sling around by its straps. When he let go of one strap, the rock flew out and hit Goliath on the forehead. It cracked his skull, and he fell facedown on the ground. 50 David defeated Goliath with a sling and a rock. He killed him without even using a sword. This explains that David killed Goliath, which is a success for David and his town. The quote from Casey at the Bat is Casey has struck out. This quote explains that Casey has failed because he struck out. Secondly, Casey and David is Casey got overconfident and David believed in himself. Proof that Casey got overconfident from Casey at the Bat is He lightly doffed his hat. This explains that he was really confident and he believed to much and he was not being very humble. Another citing of the source from David and Goliath is I ll go out and fight him myself. This explains that David is brave but not too valiant. Finally, David is humble and Casey is not. • 4. Rio Grande Rift The Rio Grande rift is superimposed on a region with a long and complex history of deformation and heating, which affects the location and com position of the subsequent rift related magmatism (Mack, Seager, Kieling, 1994).. The development of the Rio Grande rift formed part of a series of Cenozoic extensional events that affected the whole of the western USA. These events were contemporaneous with changes in motions of the Farallon and North American plates at the Pacific margin and are widely thought to be genetically related to them by processes such as back arc spreading. Alternative hypotheses re late extension to thermal relaxation and gravity spreading of Laramide thickened crust and magmatism to active asthenospheric upwelling. The Rio Grande rift lies just to the east of the continental divide between the Great Plains and the Colorado Plateau and essentially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following the end of Laramide crustal shortening and Palaeogene magmatism, the initiation of the development of the Rio Grande rift occurred between 31 28 million years ago in southern New Mexico (Berglund et al., 2012).. This rifting propagated northward to northern New Mexico (27 25 million years ago) and Colorado (27 26 Million years ago) (Crow, et.al., 2011). Early crustal extension involved low angle faulting that formed broad basins and predates magmatism at the rift axis. This early phase development of the Rio Grande rift lasted for 10 to 12 million years and was followed by a lull in volcanic activity between 17 and 14 Million years ago. This period of quiescence is apparent throughout the whole of the western USA, and it marks a change from volcanism that was dominated by calc alkaline rhyolites and andesites to bimodal assemblages of basalt and rhyolite. It also marks a change in direction of crustal extension from WSW ENE to E W, that was accompanied by a decrease in the width of the zone of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Operant Conditioning And Classical Conditioning Classical conditioning is defined as a learning process that occurs when a biological response is paired with a neutral stimulus in reference of Brembs and Heisenberg (2000). An age old example is Ivan Pavlov conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell by giving them food each time it rang. In doing such, the dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell to meal time. Operant conditioning is a spin on classical conditioning, whereas instead of trying to pair a response with a stimulus, a direct behavioral outcome is achieved with reinforcements or punishments. In classical conditioning there are what is called an unconditioned stimulus and an unconditioned response. The unconditioned response is an unlearned response that occurs naturally in reaction to the unconditioned stimulus. Such as when someone jerks their hand away when they burn themselves on a hot stove. There is also a conditioned stimulus and a conditioned response. An example of this would be getting hungry when you smell the scent of food. The body knows that usually when the smell of food is around it is time to eat, therefore your stomach rumbled in anticipation of the meal. Sometimes classical conditioning is referred to as respondent conditioning. In operant conditioning the goal is to have a specific behavioral outcome. Positive reinforcement causes the strengthening of a response by adding something. Such as getting a treat after doing something good. Negative reinforcement is the act of ... • 6. Fuzzy Thinking Analysis In IT Foundations, I was assigned by Mrs. Baumaster to watch the video Fuzzy Thinking. The speaker in this video is an Astrophysicist by the name of Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the video, Fuzzy Thinking he talked about many things like what was wrong with the misspellings of the word Cat and about his choice between hiring two workers. The video did not seem very interesting at first but as I watched it, the video got more and more interesting. Tyson is a very good presenter in the video because he made it interesting and fun to listen to him. All in all, this video was a great way to get his message out on how people think. I answered 5 questions that Mrs. Baumaster asked about the video Fuzzy Thinking. Fuzzy Thinking is when people are not thinking straight. I know this is correct because right after he said fuzzy thinking he told the audience the definition of it. The misspelling of the word cat is a very complex question. One misspelling is spelled as XQT and the other is spelled as KAT but they are considered equally as wrong even though one sounds like cat and the other does not. Tyson s is an astrophysicist which is similar to being an astronomer. Astrophysicists study the physics of space. I think this is a very cool job and it would also be very interesting as well as fun. The two job candidates were very different from one another. The first job candidate had knowledge of the building because they studied architecture beforehand. They knew the spire is 155ft ... • 7. The Populist Party During the time of the Progressive Era, the Populist Party made tremendous gains in the political and social aspect of American society. Discontent with the economic and political way the country was structured, the Populists sought to reform the government using a system of initiative and referendum. As a form of direct democracy, initiative and referendum was a way to give the power back to the people by utilizing local and state governments. The first part of the reform was the initiative, which is usually a petition signed by a number of voters to bring about a public vote and opinion on a certain amendment, both state and constitutional. This initiative eventually sets the path for the referendum, which is when the proposed law is enacted. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Nature Of The Gods Cartoons often depict a character with a subconscious angel and devil on each shoulder hyping up the personality trait the character should act on. These subconscious beings influence the characters to act on their impulse thoughts and reveal their true character. In the Iliad, the gods acted as these subconscious beings and were portrayed with humanistic qualities. They intervened or refused to intervene based on their emotional attachments and were the final push of the humans actions throughout the poem. The gods and humans similar qualities allowed the humans to exercise free will instead of being puppets to the gods. The comparative personalities allowed Homer to use the gods and divinity to explain certain characters behaviors. The subconscious angel and devil in cartoons contain the same personality traits of the cartoon character the same way the gods in the Iliad reflect the mortals. The gods human like characteristics compare well to a subconscious being internally molding thoughts and desires into actions. This little push of encouragement is seen in Book Two when Zeus sent a dream to Agamemnon suggesting he should attack the Trojans immediately. This arrogant idea of attacking the Trojans immediately with little preparation isn t too far fetched from Agamemnon s normal behavior. In Book One, Agamemnon went against warrior code of returning Chryseis, his war prize, after her father offered up a ransom for her return. This refusal results in Apollo ... People that enjoy teaching the children giving them the attention and help they need and along the way learning too. As a public school student, I think that reform is needed because we need change in the nation we need to get rid of things and replace them with new things . Change the direction in which things are happening good examples of this are education reform, Jail reform, and female equal rights reform. These all played a really big roll in the nation changing for the better. The Education reform can improve a lot Americans lives by giving them a chance regardless what race, gender, and ... This means that people that were not able to afford the products can now buy them causing an increase of sales in The United States, Mexico and Canada. No tariffs allowed businesses to compete in the world marketplace to expand and deliver customer goods. Big manufacturing companies saw that the cheap labor was available in Mexico and moved their manufacturing companies. Many of these companies had unions and the unions were negotiating for higher wages. This could have caused a company to go bankrupt or invest in machines (robots) to replace people. This in turn led to manufacturing companies moving to Mexico in order to make profit and continue lower prices. As a business owner I would agree that just keeping a company afloat is not good business. Profits need to be met or company can go bankrupt and jobs will be lost. Many people lost their jobs due manufacturing companies moving to Mexico for profit. About 700,000 jobs were lost in the United States with 55,000 being in Texas. Pg 18. Texas Public Policy released a study that El Paso is reported to be hit the hardest by NAFTA. About 10,000 workers have been effected by the loss of jobs, yet the El Paso region has an increase of exports creating 38,000 jobs since NAFTA . Economic growth is seen in El Paso. El Paso is growing and seems to be under construction for the last 5 years. The transportation industry is booming as evident by new businesses being built such as motels and convenient stores near the main highways. Construction to accommodate the transportation industry creates new jobs which leads to economic growth. In the last five years of traveling to El Paso and back to Corpus Christi, no matter the time of day, the highways are busy with big truck/18 wheelers. Texas has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Black Lung The black lung movement was a movement formed in the late 1960 s in which the miners fought for the health benefits to cover black lung disease. Black lung is directly caused by mining and working with coal. Mildred Mullins wrote this poem and hung it on the coffin of her dead husband in the Capital to display what was going on, Compensation we are asking, While alive and still gasping; When life is o er and hymns are sung, Then they ll know we have black lung.( Charleston Gazette 15) The miners felt that since their job caused this disease that they should be compensated for it. The coal companies felt that mining did not cause this lung disease and that the miners were just making it up. Black lung is the legal term used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Blasting itself produced immense quantities of mineral particles. The common practice of returning to the work face soon after the detonation of charges meant entering an area filled with particulate matter. (Derickson 3) Also, as labors transported, unloaded, and cleaned the extracted material dust was inhaled even though they were away from the mine. So no matter what technique used the coal dust still made it in the air and into the miners lungs. There were no safety regulations in place about how long to wait after blowing up coal, no regulations about how many particulates in the air were safe, no mask or safety precautions and no mandatory venting. Although some of these things were easily usable to the safety the company felt it was too costly. An elaborate system of fans and blowers was too costly , so the miner had to pay for the bad ventilating by miners asthma and other ailments caused by bad air. (Derickson 4) Basically the coal operators did not care enough about the miners safety to provide vents and things that could have helped the air quality. Once black lung was discovered the movement began. Three studies done by the U.S. Public Health Service between 1924 and 1945 failed to bring recognition of black lung as a problematic condition. American medical opinion was that miner s asthma reflected a normal condition of mine work and actually posed no serious problems. Some doctors even went so far as to claim that coal ... • 12. Gender Codes In Advertising Have Hugely Impacted My Own Gender codes in advertising have hugely impacted my own views and how I currently interact with friends, families, and even strangers that I see walking around on the streets. It is pointed out by Sut Jhally (2009) that the reason for this being, masculinity and femininity are strongly portrayed in advertisements as two completely opposite things. In most ads, men are shown as strong human beings with complete control of whatever problems may arise to them whereas women are shown the complete opposite. Their bodies are usually in positions that suggest that they re being controlled by men and are completely dependant on them not being able to face troubles that may arise (Jhally, 2009). When advertisements show men, they depict them as strong, action ready, emotionless characters that are muscular and almost like animals as shown in The Codes of Gender: Identity and Performance in Pop Culture. This sets a standard for other men to fit into and not doing so has dire consequences. When walking around and interacting with new people, I automatically try to fit into these criteria that the advertisements have created to define masculinity because if I don t then I feel like they judge me based on what ideologies they ve been brought up with, which is mostly like the same advertisements that separates masculinity and femininity completely. I believe this has been encoded to us so thoroughly that if you don t succumb to his categorization then you re not as approachable compared to someone who is. Women are also sexualized in a majority of advertisements which consequentially alters the thoughts of men around us into having certain expectations for them. Goffman (2009) argues that women are often shown lying down in vulnerable sexually available positions, and even biting on their lips and pulling on their skirts in advertisements. This essay focuses on four main sociological concepts proposed by the functionalist Emile Durkheim; the division of labour; mechanical and organic solidarity; anomie and suicide, and examines their relevance in contemporary society. Along with Marx and Weber, Durkheim is considered one of the founding members of modern sociology. He is also credited with making sociology a science through his application of scientific and empirical research. Durkheim believed that sociology should be seen as a science separate from other sciences such as psychology, by studying social facts objectively as things. (McDonald, 2009) Organic solidarity arose as a result of the industrial revolution when society became more multifaceted and new ways of working emerged. This saw a decline in the collective conscience regarding shared morals and beliefs as society began to progress and expand. The division of labour that arises as a result of organic solidarity is complex and varied, resulting in people becoming more individualistic and yet also interdependent. Society s social bonds now centred around the fact that people were dependant on each other for the good and services required in their day to day lives. (McDonald, 2009) As organic solidarity is typical of complex, industrialised societies, Durkheim s theory is very applicable to modern life and the first world in particular. Individuality is a major feature of people living in the western world today e.g. the USA, UK, and Ireland. This is evident in our political and social thinking. Much emphasis is placed on personal rights and the belief that nothing is more important than us. (Hughes et al, 1995) Meanwhile we are not self sufficient; we rely heavily on the expertise of thousands globally to live our daily lives e.g. the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive etc. (Macionis and Plummer, 2005) A huge increase in individualism came about because of organic solidarity resulting in a breakdown of moral and ethical boundaries ... The Futility Of Dreaming By John Steinbeck Sydney Pamela Larter Mr. Sweeney English ENG1D: Block 7 February 5, 2015 The Futility of Dreaming As the late Osho believed, And desires are never here and now they are non existential. They are just mental, in the mind. And they cannot be fulfilled because their very nature is to move into the future. John Steinbeck s novella, Of Mice and Men explores this theme of futile desire through various relationships and character complexes. This fictional story begins by introducing two men with a relationship built from the very foundations of love. As the novel progresses, we begin questioning innate truths. Steinbeck uses his literary prowess to entwine us within a story of loneliness, loss and morality. The characters hopes and dreams, regardless of outcome, are a mechanism of survival and a desire to lead something other than an otherwise inconsequential existence. Steinbeck presents dreams as a tool to aid the men of the ranch s contentment. They give a sense of purpose, a reward for long days of hard labor on the ranch. The idea of dreams prolonging survival and happiness is best portrayed by the dream and relationship shared by Lennie and George. Their mutual dream to live offa the fatta the lan (Steinbeck 57) brings to light their need of other s companionship to alleviate isolation and loneliness, and to make their dream seem more realistic. • 32. The Reflection Of Achieving College Success In College Achieving College Success has been a very positive journey for me. Prior to the course, I was mostly a positive thinker, and had overcome several things in my life. However, the class provided me with strategies useful in pushing forward in all life circumstances. Many negative thoughts run through my head, as is true for everyone else. It was important to know how to control them and use my negative experiences to better myself. I also learned how to set positive goals that will positively benefit me, and to set a deadline to achieve my goals. I feel much more organized and confident after taking this course. I feel like I can face anything and come out of it with a positive take away or goal, and building off every experience will always be a goal now. This class gives great advice for achieving success in all major life goals. The main, and probably most important concept I learned was the Creator idea. I had childhood epilepsy that went away, and I have a disabled mother and a dead sister. Perseverance and coming back from trouble have been the qualities that have characterized my life up to ...
