Norwegian Whaling Essay
Norwegian Whaling
Modern commercial whaling is continuously being over exploited as whaling companies strive to
maximize their profits despite international protest and a ban by the International Commission. Many
various species of whales have been extinct, and the relatively few whales that remain are extremely
vulnerable, and the factors that led to their over exploitation in the past have not changed. Norway,
one of the several countries involved in illegal whaling, has again refused to accept the international
moratorium on whaling and has announced that its catch quotas for whales have risen. In 1995
Norwegian whales caught 217 whales out of a quota of 232. In 1996 the quota was 425. Now, on May
27, 1997 the whaling season will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Several justifications that Norway and Japan have for the endless massacre of these innocent whales
are: it is a long established Norwegian tradition of whaling, Japan hunts whales under scientific
research , and Both countries argue that minke whales are not endangered and that an uncontrolled
population of the whales would threaten valuable fish stocks.
However, none of this arguments use scientific evidence to justify the killings of these whales. In fact
the cloak of tradition in Norway is being used to disguise the fact that the price of whale meat is $290
a kilogram, which is a very lucrative profit. Japan s excuse for scientific research is a poor one,
considering money is made when the whale meat is sold to restaurants and wholesalers after the so
called scientific research is completed. In addition, the relationship between fish stocks and whales
need not be questioned. The fishery is a commercial industry, not a subsistence way of life. Minke
whales are not participating in a commercial industry.
The unreasonable justifications for murder cannot be accepted by any decent human being because
whales are mammals, not fish, but they have been historically treated as fish by the commercial
whaling industry. A great number of fish species reproduce by laying an enormous quantity of eggs
into the sea for fertilization by males. Even though only a small percentage

Discrimination In Health And Social Care Essay
The discrimination is based on ageism. Ageism means when someone discriminates a person
according to their age. The patient feels that because she is old, the carers will think controlling her
and not provide her with the care she needs is satisfying and the right thing to do. As well as this, the
carers believe that old people are irrelevant and do not have feelings since old patients are near the end
of their lives. The patient (old lady) also states how the care worker would shout at her which could
make her feel small/inferior/scared compared to the carers and how whatever she says, it s irrelevant
towards the carers therefore this leads her feeling isolated and alone. It lowers her confidence making
her feel worthless and unwanted just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because the carer isn t aware of what the old lady needs or wants. Whenever she asks for
something, the carer s would refuse, such as when the old patient chose from the food menu to eat
vegetarian food as she dislikes fish or meaty products, (vegetarian) the carer didn t give her any other
option apart from eating meat which the old lady doesn t prefer as her right to choice was taken away.
This shows how she is being forced to do or eat things she doesn t like. The carer told her to listen to
her and stop complaining about it. This could even have an effect on her religion or beliefs. Since
maybe she s not allowed to eat something that s meaty. Furthermore this could affect the patient
personally as she loses her rights to do what she wants. Therefore she won t argue back to prove her
points and rights. Her short term will be affected as she will feel scared and threatened from the care
workers as she may think that they would control what she does or hurt her if she was to complain or
tell anyone. So this reinforces how her rights are very low and limited. This will affect her intellectual
development because since her rights aren t being heard, she will give up trying and would consider
herself unintelligent and

Pierre-Auguste Renoir Essay
Pierre Auguste Renoir
Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in 1841 to a tailor and dressmaker. He attended a Christian Brother s
School where he was taught the rudiments of drawing. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a firm of
porcelain painters, Levy Freres et Compagnie, whose workshops were near the Louvre. At the same
time, he took drawing lessons from the sculptor Callouette. After serving his apprenticeship as a
porcelain painter, he worked for a M. Gilbert, a manufacturer of blinds. In 1860 he became a student
of Charles Gleyre and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In April, 1864 he came out 10th of 106th
candidates in a sculpture and drawing examination there.
Initially influenced by the Barbizon School, once he had come ... Show more content on

He had become averse to the depiction of the ephemeral, of the fleeting moment, and started to seek
the art of the museums . It is in the museum that one must learn to paint. One must make the paintings
of one s own time, but it is there in the museum that one develops the taste for painting, which nature
alone cannot provide. The most spectacular example of the influence of Italian art on Renoir can be
found in The Bathers. The hardness of outline, the smooth glossy texture and clarity of colour are the
grounding for The Bathers. This can be considered his classical phase.
Renoir was a remarkably versatile artist, his work ranged from portraits and scenes of Parisian life to
landscapes and eventually nudes. An interest in sculpture was sparked in 1906, when a bust was made
of him by Mailloll. In 1913 Renoir employed 23 year old Richard Guino as his teacher and assistant,
and his collaboration with Guinno produced 14 figures and bas reliefs.
Renior was blatantly anti Semitic, strongly believed in the panacea like benefits of religion, and felt
that Education is the downfall of the working classes . His attitude toward women hardly coincides
with the adoration of their beauty expressed in his paintings. He regarded the inferiority of women as
axiomatic. His son Jean said that he once

The Impact of Melting Ice Caps
The Impact of Melting Ice Caps
There is a large amount research demonstrating the impact of global warming on our planet. As the
overall temperature of the Earth increases, ice and snow masses are melting. As more ice and snow is
lost, the ocean s sea levels are rising. Additionally with less ice and snow, less sun light is reflected
into space and instead it is absorbed by the planet. The continual absorption of the heat in sunlight
gradually warms the planet along with other factors. Therefore, the loss of ice caps, glaciers, and snow
is furthering the increase in the temperature of the planet.
The polar ice caps play an enormous role in regulating the Earth s temperature. According to
Montgomery (2008), polar ice reflects close to 90 percent of rays from the sun back into space.
However, our dark oceans only bounce back around 10 percent of solar radiation (Calvin, 2008). One
of the most important properties of that both ice and snow share is a very high albedo. Albedo is the
amount of solar radiation reflected from an object or a surface (Cousineau, 2011). As glaciers and ice
caps melt due to a process called thermal expansion, the tendency of matter to change in volume as a
response to a change in temperature (Archer, 2007), our ocean s sea levels are rising at an extremely
fast rate. Worldwide our sea levels have risen 4 8 inches throughout the 20th century (Wunderground,
2013). With the loss of ice caps and the gain of more water in our oceans less and

Flower Morphology And Honey Bees
Flower Morphology. Flowers in blueberry are characterized by their bell shaped corollas, with
stamens and anthers inside and a stigma sometimes protruding past the flower aperture (Eck and
Mainland, 1971) (Figure 1). Blueberry flowers have elongated corolla tubes and poricidal anthers,
which tends to make pollination by honey bees difficult (Ritzinger and Lyrene, 1999). Variation in
flower size and morphology between cultivars has been shown to impact insect foraging activity and,
as a result, fruit set (Courcelles et al., 2013). Corolla length and aperture diameter appear to be some
of the most important floral traits for pollen and nectar accessibility to honey bees, which impacts
pollination and fertilization. As shown by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is well established that fertilization and yields are significantly increased when flowers
are cross pollinated (Ehlenfeldt, 2001; Krebs and Hancock, 1990; Vander Kloet, 1984; Vander Kloet
and Lyrene, 1987; Wood, 1968). Yields are also generally increased through cross pollination with the
aid of insect pollinators (Ehlenfeldt, 2001; Krebs and Hancock, 1990). Generally, fewer tetrads of
outcrossed pollen are required to reach pollen load saturation than with self pollination (Parrie and
Lang, 1992). However, pollen tubes from self pollinated plants grow at the same rate as outcrossed
pollen once germination occurs (Krebs and Hancock, 1988; Vander Kloet and Lyrene, 1987). Only a
fraction of ovules develop into seeds, with over 100 ovules being common to highbush blueberry fruit
and fewer than 50 seeds forming (Pritts et al., 1992). Seed number is positively correlated to fruit size
(until saturation occurs) and seed abortion is dependent on the level of self fertility (Pritts et al., 1992;
Vestrheim et al., 1996).
Pollination in highbush blueberry. In blueberry production, commercially managed honey bees,
specifically the Italian honey bee (Apis mellifera ligustica ; commonly referred to as honey bee ) are
primarily responsible for pollination. Wet and cool spring weather limits honey bee activity and
subsequently can negatively affect pollination and fruit set. The Northeastern region of the United
States, including Michigan, is

Analysis Of My Dream
Dream
In my dream, I saw my stepmom talking to a group of men. This group of men looked like they were
part of a bike gang, and they all had either a knife or a gun on them. The group of men had scary
tattoos all over them, leather vests, and distressed jeans on with boots. The men took off and were
headed to an apartment complex in search of someone. They didn t knock on any doors or try to break
into a specific apartment; they were just walking around looking for someone outside the apartment
buildings. When they found who they were looking for, they started running and shooting towards that
person. It was my father.
At this point in my dream, I started screaming and crying, but I wasn t actually in my dream. It felt as

I then asked her to describe their tattoos, but again I got no answer. At that point, I knew that the only
two characters that I had to focus on were on her dad and her stepmother. When I ask the dreamer to
tell me about her stepmom, she replied by saying that she was an awful person and that they never got
along. She also added that when she was living with her, she felt like her stepmom did not love her
and that from the very beginning she was trying to separate her from her dad. Then, when I ask her to
tell me about her dad, she went on to tell me that her dad and her, have always had a close bond, and
that she feels until this day that she has to protect her dad from her stepmom, as she has done some
pretty bad stuff to her dad during and after their marriage. I then ask the dreamer to explain what her
stepmom has done to her dad in the past and now that they are divorce? She discloses that when her
dad was marry, her stepmom was not a very responsible caregiver because she used to leaved her dad
to take care of all the children and all of the responsibilities of the house, and when her stepmom
returned home there always seem to be a lot of conflicts between her and her dad as he was starting to
suspect that she was probably cheating on him, but he was never sure if that was true or not. She also

La gerencia de PM se centró en rectificar el programa de marketing de Miller. El slogan de su
campaña publicitaria era Miller la Champaña de la Cerveza Enlatada . El mercado de Miller eran los

Types Of Compensation For Employees
Types of Compensation
Natalie A. Szczep

Intermediate Accounting II
Keiser University
Abstract
There are many different forms of compensation that employers pay to their workers. The accounting
treatment of these various forms of pay are different depending on the type, frequency and amounts of
compensation due. Each type of compensation also has different disclosures required, advantages and
disadvantages based on the accounting rules. The following pages will take a closer look at three
forms of compensation: base wages, vacation pay, and bonuses.
Salaries expense is the most basic type of compensation to be accounted for. Salary is compensation
paid to an employee for services rendered to a company. The entries recorded to pay salaries are
entered based on the pay cycle of the company, whether it is weekly, biweekly, monthly or bimonthly,
etc. These pay cycles do not always coincide with the issuing of financial statements, and the income
statement must show total expenses for that period. Expenses for salaries are accrued, to show that the
amounts have been earned, even if the pay date occurs after the end of the accounting period and
therefore, the issuing of the income statement (Averkamp, 2015). The accrual for salaries expense is
classified as a current liability on the balance sheet per the FASB code 210 10 45 8c (Asc.fasb.org,
2015). So, the accounting treatment and classifications are fairly straightforward

Book Review Of Ishmael Beah
Introduction The author of this book, Ishmael Beah was forced to become a child soldier at 12 years
old due to the civil war occurring in his home country of Sierra Leone which first began in 1991. After
Ishmael s home village of Mogbwemo was attacked by rebels he was separated from his family,
forcing him to flee. Without a home or a family to take care of him, Ishmael then spent months
wandering with a group of other boys who had been displaced by the war. While taking refuge in a
village protected by the government army, Ishmael was forced to fight for the government against the
rebels which ultimately ended up lasting for almost 3 years. In 1996, Ishmael was rescued by a
UNICEF coalition where he began his journey of rehabilitation for ... Show more content on

Life changed for Ishmael in January 1996, when UNICEF aid workers took him and other child
soldiers to a rehabilitation center in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Although hesitant at first,
Ishmael eventually began to trust the workers and took a special liking to Esther, a nurse who played
an integral role in his rehabilitation. By September of 1996, Ishmael was rehabilitated and was
speaking in front of the UN where he discussed the effects of war on children and shared his story.
Returning to Sierra Leone, Ishmael stayed with his last living relative, uncle Tommy which is short
lived as the rebels invade Freetown and shortly after uncle Tommy dies after contacting a fever.
Fearing that if he stayed he would join the army, Ishmael fled to the neighbouring Guinea so he could
get a flight to the United States where he would stay with Laura Simms, a story teller he met while at
the UN and who would end up adopting him. Analysis There are two major structural conditions
which ultimately led to Ishmael becoming a child soldier which are the nature of war and poverty.
During times of war there is no escaping the violence and uncertainty that follows it. Ishmael is a
prime example of this as the nature of war heavily contributed to him becoming a child soldier. This is
first seen when Ishmael is attacked by villagers that feared he and his friends were rebel spies. The

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the dawn of...
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the dawn of Chinese economic reform under Deng
Xiaoping in 1978 promised to produce somewhat parallel long term results for two of the world s
largest economies. Although China and Russia mirrored each other in the nature of the transitions they
were undertaking at the time, their trajectories for future economic and political change are now
diverging. Despite the fact that both China and post soviet Russia would ultimately tip the scale away
from central economic planning toward market based systems and global integration, the approaches
and circumstances surrounding these economic shifts are completely different. Initially, Russia s
implementation of shock therapy under Yeltsin in 1992 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The USSR had experienced two decades of stability under Brezhnev, but this era was coupled with
rising corruption and weighty foreign policy issues like the US arms race and the invasion of
Afghanistan. Contrasting economic preconditions of the movement toward market based models also
influenced patterns of change and development in Russia and China at the end of the 20th century. For
example, by the close of the 1980 s, Russia stood as a seasoned industrial power with a sizeable, well
educated, urban labor force. Militarily, it was on par with the United States and had developed a
strong presence in science and technology development. Contrastingly, when China began its own
transition almost a decade earlier, at the end of the 1970 s its economy was still predominantly rooted
in agriculture. 80% of the nation s population (as compared with 15% for Russia) consisted of
uneducated agrarian peasantry, and the country had little stake in industry or scientific innovation. In
the wake of the soviet state s collapse, Russia faced a dropping population and a deficit of available
labor, while China s population was considered very large relative to its productivity. Though these
demographic factors allowed for cheaper, more readily available labor in China, Russia vastly
outstripped China in terms of natural

Enframing
In this quote Heidegger is expressing what the essence of modern technology is. The essence of
modern of technology is Enframing. Enframing is way of revealing, it is an imposition in which
humans view the world as ready to use, standing reserve, and disposable. The reason why Enframing
is challenging is due to the notion that we view nature as a force that can not only be subdued, but be
used to for our benefit. Nature no longer just exists but rather can now be viewed as a potential power
source than can be harnessed, but stored for later use. This notion of standing reserve has only become
more prevalent with the rise of renewable energy, especially when one considers solar energy. The
main benefits of solar power is not only something than can be extracted for usage while the sun is
out, but the fact that it can be stored and exploited when the sun is not readily available. ... Show more

Heidegger initially states that technology has a instrumental and anthropological definition. The
instrumental definition asserts that technology is a means to an end, while the anthropological
definition states that technology is a human activity. Heidegger makes a move separating the correct
from the true. While they may both be correct definitions of technology, he claims that the
anthropological and instrumental definitions of technology are not its true definitions. Which leads us
to question what is the true definition of technology and is there a distinction between technology and

Miranda Warning Importance
The Miranda Warning is highly important. If the police fail to read the suspect his or her Miranda
Rights the prosecutor can t use for most purposes anything the suspect says as evidence against the
suspect at trial. The Miranda Warning requires that officers let you know of certain facts after your
arrest, before questioning you. A rule was made that when police have you in custody, they have to
remind you of your Constitutional rights before questioning you or they can t use the things you say
against you in court. It s just an easy way to decide if a statement was voluntary. That s why Miranda
is important, and that s why Miranda can, and does, still get criminal cases dismissed when the

Summer Day Descriptive Writing
It was a gorgeous summer day. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the world was at peace
on the seemingly carefree sunday afternoon. church had just ended and the children ran fast and free
ready to play. They ran two and twelve towards the town s lake to go swimming, in order to ward off
the heat of the noon sun. They stampeded through town bumping over numerous people and even one
another to reach the cool blue waves. The menacing multitude took a sharp turn from the street to an
old dusty road. The trees shook in the evening breeze and swayed slightly further when the children
hurried by. Dust faintly clouded out the light that poured over the path. Finally they reached the dock
and began to take off and swap clothes. The boys took off their shirts and pants and swam in their
underwear, while the girls chose to go behind some nearby bushes.and exchange out their attire. When
everyone was in they started to splash one another while laughing and shouting. A few of them dived
under the water to search for fish and other sea life. When they came back, up two of them had

Pipettes Lab
This experiment was conducted to determine the extent to which commercially bought pipettes
accurately deliver desired volumes. A range of small and large volumes of DI water were drawn using
three different sized pipettes and massed using an analytical balance. The weights of the water aliquots
were divided by the appropriate density of water at 26 to calculate the actual volumes delivered. Error
percent analysis was then utilized to deduce the deviation from the accurate volumes. The three
different sizes of pipettes used were Epprendorf 10, 100 and 1000 L. The results entailed a higher
accuracy in delivering the large volumes, compared to the small volumes, within the same pipette. In
addition, the medium sized pipette (10 100L) was the most accurate in delivering the targeted
volumes.

in an aircraft. While a waitress or waiter, is a person who offers services to customers at a table in a
restaurant. Anybody can become a waitress. But to become a flight attendant, there are certain
requirements to meet up with such as; having a valid passport, a passed background checks, a one to
two years experience in service occupation. A flight attendant need to undergo training and take and
exam and can only be awarded the license upon their success. Even though being a waitress or a flight
attendant may sound the same due to some similarities in providing services to customers, and
ensuring customer s safety, certain factors make these two careers different from each other. The first
difference between these two careers is the knowledge required. Apart from serving food and drinks to
customers, a flight attendant has a lot of weeks and months of training to undergo such as; service
training, customer s safety in case of an emergency, and layout such as how to open and lock the door
of the plain. Moreover, a waitress requires training too but not as vigorous as a flight attendance. A
waitress or a waiter needs to know the various menus, how they are being prepared, and the kinds of
ingredients used in case a customer is allergic to something. A waiter or

Title: The Failure of Yucca Mountain
Speaker: Michelle Hwang
Specific Purpose: To explain the intended purpose of Yucca Mountain as a potential nuclear waste
repository, and the resulting failure of the project due to government inaction.
Introduction
I. Attention getter:
Imagine your old community swimming pool filled with trash. Now as time passes that trash just
keeps accumulating; what would you do with that trash? Where does it go or more importantly where
can it go? Well, instead of trash imagine nuclear waste. Currently, 122 power plants across the U.S
have spent nuclear fuel and waste that is laying unattended with nowhere to go. Our government tried
to tackle this problem by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
1. These dry caskets are then stored at temporary storage units that hold the nuclear waste, but these
storage units are quickly being exhausted due the accumulating amount of waste. 2. The government
wanted to find a solution to this and decided that the proposed solution should not only prevent
leakage of radioactive material into the environment, but also remain in a location for a period of time
that outlives the human civilization.
So, the government took action and passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982.
II. Main Idea #2 A. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 was the start of establishing a permanent
nuclear disposal site by 1998. 1. The Department of Energy was assigned to study potential repository
sites and to develop a relationship with the nuclear power plants in disposing the nuclear waste. 2. In
1987 Congress revised the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and made Yucca Mountain the main permanent
repository site and required that the Department of Energy begin moving the waste from the nuclear
reactors to the repository by 1998. It is important to remember that 1998 was the deadline.
B. Yucca Mountain was the chosen repository site because it was resilient to any leakage, no
environmental factors that could lead to a leakage, and because it was in the middle of a desert where
no human population was near.
1. To fund the program, the Nuclear Waste Fund was created. Since

Examples Of Dual Federalism
Federalism is a type of government structure that involves governments on all levels. It is how these
different governments interact with each other. Three different types of federalisms include dual,
cooperative, and centralized. Dual federalism differs from the other two in its form. Dual federalism
has clear lines that divide the different types of government. Federal and state governments do not
collaborate with each other but rather enact their own laws as they see fit. State government s have the
freedom to enact certain laws within their respective borders. If they are ever faced with a problem
that is beyond their scope, the federal system will become involved. Some examples of problems that

The Passion of the Feather Pen
The Passion of the Feather Pen Rayvon S. Harrell The poem peaceful decent is dedicated to my Great
grandmother Clarine B. Allen. Clarine B. Allen along with her husband J. D. Allen were responsible
for raising three generations of children to include my Grand mother, my mother and her siblings as
well as me an my two older sisters. To me this was one of the strongest women I have seen walk this
earth. This woman was a true blessing to me and all others that encountered her. What makes her so
special to me is the fact that she adopted my grand mother and raised many more kids than she
bargained for. If she wanted to give up she could have however she kept us all. Peaceful Decent I seen
a feather the other day dance it s way down, gently touch the ground and refuse to make a sound. Is
that not the saddest thing, to fall from a wing? Never to fly again, it must hurt as you descend.
However the saddest thing is also the most honorable, because even though the feathers flight must
cease it dances down touches the ground and gently dies in peace. For You I went between the valley
and picked a rose for you I thought that you would like it so I bought you two. You said that you liked
music so I wrote a song for you, created a symphony and played it for you to view. You always
seemed ambitious so I traveled to the moon asked her for a favor and got a star for you. I wanted you

Chin A Global Superpower Essay
China has become a global superpower. Its rise to the top of the trading chain has become a key factor
into what it s become today. With its accelerated population over the last years, it s economic value
has flourished its economy to a wide extent. There is also a saying, that with every good thing, there is
always something bad. That s when China s environmental factors come to play. In the last twenty
years, the quality of life in china has been decaying. The air surrounding most of the major cities in
china are filled with horrible, toxic chemicals that has brought worldwide attention to this issue. Not
only that, but contaminated and scarce water in China also play large roles in the impact of the
environment. I believe that the increase in population, coal processing, and manufacturing of goods,
have brought about environmental damages, but has also created economic stability. In the Shanxi
Province sits Linfen, one of the most polluted cities not only china but the world. Since 1978, Linfen
has been China s number one resource in coal producing energy. China needed large amounts of
sufficient energy for its big manufacturers and for its rapid increase in population. In the past, linfen
was a pleasant farming community and also mentioned as the fruit and flower town . Its name comes
from the Fen River in which its sits on. It was widely recognized as the city with running natural water
springs. In the 1930 s, the town had less than a few thousand people

Whole Foods Swot Analysis Essay

Whole Foods Market SWOT Analysis
Whole Foods Market Inc. positions itself more than just a food enterprise, where it aims at selling
quality organic and natural products, by creating an ideal consumer experience for those willing to pay
a higher price. Apparently, SWOT analysis can be used for Whole Foods Market Company to identify
its competitiveness.
Strength
The company has expertise market knowledge and experience in this industry, where they have
recorded a consistent growth over the years, making it a leader in the organic foods market in the
United States. Across the North of America, the company has more than 196 stores, which are the fifth
most valued public retailer, providing them with the ability to secure significant market knowledge.

The firm s ability to produce quality organic foods acts as the strategy for limiting adverse
competition from its opponents. Furthermore, Whole Foods Market has significantly exploited the
product part of the marketing mix, which has positioned it as the sole producer of the best and quality
organic foods in the US; therefore, building a strong identity. The concept behind this is to create a
consumer experience of more than just food, by establishing a talking store, which exceeds a typical
supermarket.
The third strength is good employer reputation, where the company is dedicated to forming a long and
healthy relationship with their team members. Finally, a positive image, advertising channel, and
sustainability. In London, Whole Foods Market applies the concept of corporate social responsibility,
by sponsoring the various event, offering food to the needy, among other philanthropic activities,
which has created a positive image for the company. Again, the firm has a competitive advantage
based on the size of the stores, where every store has a customised layout.

The Tragedy of My Uncle Khaled and the Gulf War of 1990 91 In his chapter from On Writing Well

remembering my late uncle Khaled s experience of the Iraqi invasion, and occupation of, my native

One could even add Syria, a violent enemy of Iraq. This was the normal opinion held by Kuwaitis for
as long as the first two weeks of Iraqi occupation. The opinion increased or decreased in intensity with
statements made at Arab League meetings for and against the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, as well as
strong public denunciations by foreign nations (especially the U.S.) of the invasion or less passionate,
neutral, comments made by other countries (particularly China). As the end of the first month of the
occupation approached with no action taken by the Arab League, nor anyone else, my uncle s opinion
changed along with everyone else s in our tiny country. When he would visit us he would still appear
at least partially optimistic, commenting that The world does not seem ready to take action yet, but it
will. In the meantime, the Iraqis will tire of this game soon enough and leave. Here, again, the
opposite seemed true. As time passed, the Iraqis appeared only to increase the presence of their forces
in Kuwait. Whereas Iraqi forces at first had seemed more scattered in numbers throughout the
neighborhoods of the capital city, perhaps as only smaller squads of men, by the second month they
massed in human blocks that grew in size to companies, or even battalions, of troops.

Love Is Only A Temporary Illusion In The Chaser By John...
The Chaser is a short story written by John Collier referring to a man named Alan attempting to
purchase a cheap love potion so a woman, Diana will love him the way he loves her. The theme of the
story is Love is only a temporary illusion. Lots of ordinary people fall in love and naively believe it
will last forever. As they are in the grasp of the illusion they will do ANYTHING to acquire a type of
control over their loved ones, but once reality finally sets in the once passionate lovers eyes are finally
opened to reality and he understands the one he is tied to is completely incompatible with him and
doesn t satisfy his expectations for the relationship.
Alan was a love sick man who desperately wanted this woman who seemed to be not so fond of him.
He doesn t want to except the fact Diana doesn t love him so Alan goes to an old man who sells him a
love potion for $1 and warns him that it is not reversible. The old man also mentions the most
expensive potion he has, the life cleaner. . In the short story, the old man states in line 16 ,I look at it

Understanding the Black Power Movement
Introduction Understanding the Black Power Movement as it relates to the creation of Black or
African American study programs and departments is to recognize the efforts of radical student
activists on college campuses. The prevailing thought of the Black existence casted doubt on the
importance of Black/African studies at colleges and universities. Blacks, unfortunately, were thought
to not have a history, or at least one not worth examining, in the American existence and even within
world civilization. However, such as notion is baseless. In the tens of thousands of years of
civilization, Africans have witnessed and contributed to the productivity of the human existence. The
great salt and gold kingdoms of the Ghanaian and Malian Empires thrived long before the Hapsburg
and Bourbon dynasties rules Spain and France, respectively. Yet, the contributions of those great
African civilizations were often ignored in the historiography of early civilizations. Even the
contributions of the Ancient Egyptians have become part of the ensemble of the Greek and Roman
tragedy, removing Egypt from the history of Africa. The contributions of Black Americans in the
history of the United States were virtually absent prior to the creation of Black Study programs and
departments. The assumption of Black history was that it included the 300 plus years of enslavement,
the Civil War (where student are indoctrinated to believe that President Lincoln intended on freeing
Blacks) and then the more

The Effects Of Dry Needling On Physical Therapists
Dry needling is currently one of the scope of practice battles encountered in the physical therapy
profession. The hot topic is extremely controversial and is not only debated by physical therapists but
by acupuncturists as well. The primary issue is whether dry needling should actually be considered
under the physical therapists scope of practice. The controversial aspect arises because the dry
needling technique is technically invasive because the skin is being punctured. Another issue that
comes about this topic is the insufficient amount of research conducted. (Benefits/Side Effects) In
addition, dry needling is also not currently included in the DPT programs curriculum. Therefore, those
physical therapists who want to acquire this skill it is required to be learned in a continuing education
course. Furthermore, there are currently only 18 locations in the United States that offer dry needling
education to physical therapists. Another issue concerning dry needling is how this technique should
be coded and billed. This being said, it is illegal for physical therapists in New York, Idaho, Tennessee,
Hawaii, and South Dakota to perform dry needling in their practice. For example, Hawaii prohibits
physical therapists from puncturing skin under any circumstances. Although, it is not considered
illegal in the other states, it has not been confirmed as qualifying under the scope of practice by the
state regulatory board. The APTA has even began to contact

The Decolonization Process After The Second World War
29. The decolonization process after the Second World War resulted in the end of British hegemony in
the Indian Ocean. The subsequent Cold War which ensued was again marked by superpower rivalry in
the region, enhancing the region s global strategic value. When this period came to an end, the littoral
countries of the IOR to a certain extent rediscovered some of the economic, social and cultural facets
that made the ocean the bridge between Africa, Asia and Australia . However, regional cooperation
coordination is still a far reality which is a dire necessity for overall development in the region. In the
21st century the Indian Ocean security has evolved to be multifaceted and dynamic. The emerging
threats and challenges which are typically common to the entire region, range across a wide spectrum
with transnational maritime crimes such as piracy, illegal immigration, human trafficking, smuggling
and illegal unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing activities at one end to the more serious
challenges of natural disasters, climate change and even interstate maritime disputes erupting into
fully fledged confrontations at the other end . The word Maritime Security deals with the prevention of
illicit activities in the maritime domain . In the previous chapter we have been acquainted with the
geostrategic and economic importance of the region which has resulted in the shift of world s interest
to this part of the maritime province.

Somali Pirates Research Paper
There are many pirates in the Somalian waters. Somalia is a place in East Africa. The Somali pirates
are a criminal enterprise that is getting in millions of dollars in ransom payments. They have been
hijacking ships since the year 2005. Port officials in Somalia are accepting bribes from the pirates to
enter the Somali waters (Scott Baldauf 1). These Somali Pirates resorted to piracy because of an
economic devastation that happened in Somalia in the 90s. The pirates are Somalians who are raiding
ships that come nearby Somalia. They carefully select a ship to raid. They will want to raid cargo
ships. After they find a ship to raid, they then use force to get into the ship. The pirates carry various
guns to help to get on board the ship. After they manage to get on the ship, they start to take all the

The Potential for a Severe Food Shortage in the United States
A severe shortage of food in the United States could occur from many causes. Farms could stop
growing crops and breeding animals. Some sort of bacteria could sweep through the country killing
different food plants. The more important part of the shortage of food however would not be the
causes, but the effects. The stance of the country s economy, the well being of middle and lower class
families, and the quality of stores that used to sell the products would all decline greatly if an event as
severe as an extreme shortage of food were to occur. General stores generate a large profit from the
sale of food. Some stores like Whole Foods and King Soopers do not sell much besides food products.
If there were to be a severe shortage of food, stores like Whole Foods, Walmart, Costco, and King
Soopers would take a severe hit in terms of income and the ability to compete with other stores. Places
like these would not be able to keep up financially if there were a lack of people buying their food
products. There are other non food products that these stores may sell, but these other products would
not be able to sell due to the fact that people would be focusing more on ways to get food rather than
buying a new T.V. or a new pair of shoes. Families in cities rely on general stores and health food
stores to obtain food products. A severe shortage of food throughout the country would raise
potentially difficult questions for families. Where are they going to get food now that stores

Pros And Cons Of Eias For Landfills
Alternatives: As previously mentioned, Gupta et al. believe current methods of conducting EIAs are

a multivariable calculation of implicated factors using a fuzzy relation, or fuzzy clustering. This
involves the attribution of a weight to each qualitative factor, in order to accurately assess the
environmental impacts of landfills. This method distinguishes itself from the others because it
accounts for the uncertainty caused by the expert s subjectivity, and for the lifetime of the landfill. The
result of this method is a fuzzy relation between frequency of occurrence and the impact on

There is room for a lot of improvement in Quebec s waste management: currently, about half of
household waste is eliminated (MDDELCC, 10) which is not economically viable. To reach its
sustainability goal, the province drafted the Quebec policy for waste management 2011 2015. By the
end date, it aims to reduce household waste to 700kg/person and to increase the diversion rate of
paper, plastic, glass and metal scraps to 70%, and of organic waste to 60% (MDDELCC, 11). An
additional benefit of these propositions is the creation of hundreds of jobs (MDDELCC, 2011). The
plan, albeit optimistic, is still unclear about how to effectively implement waste recovery. In 2012, 6
years after the start of the City of Montreal s composting initiative, only 12% of organic waste was
being recovered (Bruemmer, 2014). Montreal plans on building two biomethanization plants (where
compost is converted into biogas), along with two composting facilities (Bruemmer, 2014). Four

The Main Difference Between Opera And Musical Theatre
When imagining opera one cannot help but picture the iconic pigtailed woman wearing the horned
helmet and holding a spear. This image certainly is an element of opera (Bloom) yet the discipline
holds much more. Since its origins in sixteenth century Italy (Parker) opera has been fundamental to
the performing arts. By understanding its rich history as well as its contemporary trends arts
administrators may continue to present this beloved art form to their audiences.
The word opera, in its modern sense as a composition in which poetry, dance, and music are combined
, was first used in 1639. Shortly following was the earliest documented English usage in 1648 ( Opera
). What is the major difference between opera and musical theatre? A famous composer named
Stephen Sondheim has said that It s about the expectation of the audience. When it s on Broadway,
people expect mediocre singing and good acting; when it s in an opera house, people expect mediocre
acting and good singing (qtd. In Leigh)
The first composition called an opera was Dafne by Jacopo Peri and it was created around 1597. The
composer was inspirited by Florentine humanists who were elite at that time. It is noteworthy that
Dafne was trying to recreate the Greek drama, which is kind of recreating the characteristic of the
Renaissance in a broader view (Parker).
There are four main periods of opera history. In the Baroque period (1590 1750), there were two
dominated composers named Jacopo Peri and Claudio

The Great Depression And Economic Depression Essay
Summary The Great Depression was an economic depreciation in Europe, North America and other
industrialized areas globally that commenced in 1929 and endured until about 1939. The depression
stirred severe effects in the U.S.A that left its economy on the brink of a downfall. The research
investigates the causes and reasons that influenced the great recession in the United States of America.
The causes comprise of the hazardous decline of the Stock Market in that occurred in 1929 which sent
the Wall Street in a panic turmoil that wiped out the main investors. Similarly, the declines of over
9000 banks influence the great depression. Purchasing powers of the population decreased drastically
as the citizens from all walks of life stopped purchasing items due to economic fears and the fall of the
stock market. The nation s financial strategy that increased trade tariffs with Europe was also a
significant impediment that triggered the great economic depression. International debts were a major
aspect as well since the World War drove most European nations into dept with America. The paper
also outlines the reasons that influenced the economic depression to last long. The depression ended
up riddled with stagnated effects that subjected the economy to a slow recovery process. Economists
acknowledge pathological factors to its long lasting tenure. The fact that governments strategies did
more harm than good to the economy riddled the progress stagnant. The standard forces of

Design Patterns
Literature Review
Chapter One
Introduction
What is a Design Pattern?
A design pattern solves a problem within a given context. The solution that is offered by implementing
a pattern results in a system design structure, which balances the concerns of the design problem in a
manner most appropriate for the given context. In Understanding and Using Patterns in Software
Development , Dirk Riehle and Heinz Zullighaven offer a rather nice definition of what a design
pattern is:
A pattern is the abstraction from a concrete form which keeps recurring in specific non arbitrary
contexts.
The ability to write good patterns is very difficult. A pattern should not only convey the facts about a
system, but it should also tell a story about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The patterns described in the GoF book are illustrated in C++; a programming language that has been
declining in use over the last number of years, which limits the learning of patterns in today s
development environment where the dominant programming language taught and used, as far as
patterns are concerned is Java, although patterns can be implemented in any object orientated
programming language.
The patterns exhibited are described in very concise and restricted examples that lack a
comprehensive context in order for the reader to gain a full understanding of the use of the pattern in
question. The patterns throughout the book are also presented in isolation to each other which hinders
the illustration of pattern interaction and thus the full benefit to those wishing to learn how to
implement design patterns.
Allen Holub produced a book Holub on Patterns Learning Design Patterns by Looking at Code ,
which detailed the use of design patterns while developing a game called Game of Life. The Game of
Life is a cellular automation program, which begins with cells that are classed as either alive or dead .
The idea is then that each cell follows a set of rules to determine which whether it can live or whether
it must die .
Holubs book, published in 2004 addressed some of the shortcomings of the GoF publication, such as
the patterns were now demonstrated in Java, which has become the favoured language of the software
development industry,

Physics of Aristotle Essay
The great Greek thinker Aristotle was born in 384 B.C. in Stagirus, a city in ancient Macedonia in
northern Greece. At the age of eighteen Aristotle went to Athens to begin his studies at Plato s
Academy. He stayed and studied at the Academy for nineteen years and in that time became both a
teacher and an independent researcher. After Plato s death in 347 B.C. Aristotle spent twelve years
traveling and living in various places around the Aegean Sea. It was during this time that Aristotle was
asked by Philip of Macedon to be a private tutor to his son, Alexander. Aristotle privately taught
Alexander for three years before he returned to Athens after Philip gained control of the Greek capital.
During this period back in Athens Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Physics Aristotle deduces that there must be two main principles of change. These principles
are 1) matter and 2) form. Matter stays the same in general composition throughout change much as a
rock would stay the same even after being broken into several small pieces. Form, however, is what
changes through various processes.
In order to prevent an infinite regression of argument, Aristotle came up with the his famous idea of
the Prime Mover, which exists outside the earth somewhere in the heavens and is ultimately
responsible for all change on earth.
Aristotle s physics separated the universe into two main areas: the terrestrial realm and the celestial
realm. The terrestrial realm was composed of the four elements: earth, wind, water and fire, which
could each be either hot, wet, dry or cold, and the celestial realm made of ether, or what Aristotle
called the quintessence.
The basic assumption of Aristotelian physics was that the natural state of terrestrial matter is at rest,
and that earth air and water would continually strive to reach their natural place at the center of the
earth unless impeded by an impenetrable surface like the ground or a ceiling. He assumed that the
natural resting place of fire was somewhere above the earth but below the moon. this model held that
the complicated nature of the circulation of the air was a result of the conflict between fire, which was
trying to

Critical Analysis Of Faces Of Japan
Bias and preposterous assumptions about a foreign society are a detriment to the image of that society.
Creating a burden to the future comprehension of said society. Doctor David C. Unger, former foreign
affairs editorial writer for the New York Times, has stated and debunked said stereotypes in his
editorial titled Faces of Japan. In it, Unger argues that Japanese stereotypes are utterly incorrect and
the presumptions surrounding Japanese culture are outdated. Japan s culture is not static, Japanese
people are not spending every living moment in remorse after the events of WWII. Unger argues this
point through the explicit comparison of Japan in 1992 to Japan in 1945. The goal that Unger is trying
to achieve is to compel the audience to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its young people are highly educated, fashion conscious and remarkably well traveled. Unger has
depicted a visual of Japan s youth in the minds of the audience. The audience is focused on the idea
that Japanese people live just like any other society and establishes that there are now more
similarities between the reader and Japanese people. Imagery is an irresistible form of rhetoric to the
audience, it also helps the audience sympathize with Japanese people through shared experiences:
travel, education, fashion, etc... This imagery is effective on the audience, it paints a picture in the
reader s mind and is appealing to a feeling of commonality. In the minds of some Americans, Japan is
a; ...crude caricature, drawn from half digested sound bites and painted in racist hues. Unger is
describing the biased, and incorrect, ideas that surround Japan. The Japanese are portrayed as faceless
and conformist, their real feelings impenetrable to non Japanese. This supposedly monolithic society
is explained in terms of Japan s militarist traditions, its consensus style of politics and a shared
national anxiety over scarce resources. These are said to produce people committed to work
unceasingly so that Japan can dominate the world economically, and perhaps militarily too. ...
There are Japanese who think like that, but fewer than there used to be. Meanwhile a newer, youth
oriented leisure culture is emerging everywhere, from the nightclubs of Tokyo s Ginza and

A Rose for Emily Essay
Desperation for love arising from detachment can lead to extreme measures and destructive actions as
exhibited by the tumultuous relationships of Miss Emily in William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily (rpt.
in Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 9th ed.
[Boston: Wadsworth, 2006] 556). Miss Emily is confined from society for the majority of her life by
her father, so after he has died, she longs for relations that ironically her longing destroys. The
despondency and obsession exuded throughout the story portray the predicament at hand. Miss Emily
s relationship with her father is a key factor in the development of her isolation. As she is growing up,
he will not let anybody around his daughter, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Miss Emily finds somebody, though, it quickly pushes her to desperation. Her relationship with
Homer Barron is a result of the life and death of her father. Ironically, he is a northern, roughneck
Yankee, the exact opposite of any connection a Grierson would consider. Unsuspectingly, Emily is
attracted to him, which is an oddity itself considering her lack of personality and his obvious
charisma, for whenever you [hear] a lot of laughing...Homer Barron [will] be in the center of the
group (560). He is also the first man to show an interest in her without her father alive to scare him
off. The town is doubtful that the pair will remain together, but Emily s attachments are extreme, as
seen when she would not surrender her father s body. The circumstance exhibits how her feelings are
greatly intensified towards Homer. However, he is not a marrying man (561). When it appears as
though he will leave her, she kills him with poison. While seemingly the opposite effect of love,
killing Homer is quite in line with her obsession. If he is dead and she keeps Homer all to herself,
Emily will never lose him; he can never leave her. Other such details that express her extreme
attachments appear as she buys him clothes and toiletries before they are even considered married.
There is also the revelation at the end of the story that she has been keeping his body for over thirty
years and sleeping with it, clearly demonstrating her overt desperation

The Rights Of Gun Control
In the United States the right to keep and bear arms is a right for Americans protected by the Second
Amendment to the Constitution. This Amendment has accounted for many vigorous debates over the
nature of its content. This has led for gun control to become an extremely controversial area of
American politics. It is primarily defined by two different groups, those supporting gun control and
those supporting gun rights. These groups often disagree on the interpretation of laws and court cases
related to firearms. Even more so, they disagree about the effects of gun control on crime and the
overall safety of the public. It is clearly in the interests, of all Americans, to reduce gun violence in the
country. Each day, on an average, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States firearm homicide rate is twenty times higher than the combined rates of twenty two
countries in which are similar in wealth and population with the United States. Also, statistics show
homes containing a firearm are twenty two times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic
homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self defense. Since the 1990s, debates
regarding firearm availability and gun violence in the United States have been characterized by
concerns about the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters believe broad, unrestricted gun rights
inhibit the government from fulfilling their responsibility to protect the safety of the public. Also,
these advocates state keeping guns out of the hands of criminals results in safer communities. Gun
rights supporters promote firearms for self defense, hunting, sporting activities, and security against
tyranny. Gun rights advocates also believe firearm ownership by law abiding citizens reduces crime.
However, many of these beliefs are based on nonfactual evidence and, in fact, are quite false. Perhaps,
one of the greatest myths believed today by this debate is attempts to ban the possession of handguns,
or certain kinds of guns, are a viable option for reducing crime. It has often been proposed more guns
mean more deaths and therefore, fewer guns would equate to fewer deaths. Unfortunately, these
thoughts are all too often

Charlie s Flowers For Algernon
For many people, it is a struggle to find what makes their life good: financial success, power, love,
happiness. In the book Flowers for Algernon, the reader is presented with a choice: whether Charlie s
life is better when he is less intelligent or when he is more intelligent. Though Charlie has increased
intelligence and better comprehension of the world after his surgery, he is more outgoing and kind to
all when his degree of knowledge is low. He is also happier, and lacks painful memory of his past. As
Charlie evolves throughout the story, it is made clear that Charlie has a better life when he has a low
IQ rather than a high IQ. First off, it is obvious Charlie has a better life without much intelligence
because he has little recollection

  • 2. Norwegian Whaling Essay Norwegian Whaling Modern commercial whaling is continuously being over exploited as whaling companies strive to maximize their profits despite international protest and a ban by the International Commission. Many various species of whales have been extinct, and the relatively few whales that remain are extremely vulnerable, and the factors that led to their over exploitation in the past have not changed. Norway, one of the several countries involved in illegal whaling, has again refused to accept the international moratorium on whaling and has announced that its catch quotas for whales have risen. In 1995 Norwegian whales caught 217 whales out of a quota of 232. In 1996 the quota was 425. Now, on May 27, 1997 the whaling season will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Several justifications that Norway and Japan have for the endless massacre of these innocent whales are: it is a long established Norwegian tradition of whaling, Japan hunts whales under scientific research , and Both countries argue that minke whales are not endangered and that an uncontrolled population of the whales would threaten valuable fish stocks. However, none of this arguments use scientific evidence to justify the killings of these whales. In fact the cloak of tradition in Norway is being used to disguise the fact that the price of whale meat is $290 a kilogram, which is a very lucrative profit. Japan s excuse for scientific research is a poor one, considering money is made when the whale meat is sold to restaurants and wholesalers after the so called scientific research is completed. In addition, the relationship between fish stocks and whales need not be questioned. The fishery is a commercial industry, not a subsistence way of life. Minke whales are not participating in a commercial industry. The unreasonable justifications for murder cannot be accepted by any decent human being because whales are mammals, not fish, but they have been historically treated as fish by the commercial whaling industry. A great number of fish species reproduce by laying an enormous quantity of eggs into the sea for fertilization by males. Even though only a small percentage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Discrimination In Health And Social Care Essay The discrimination is based on ageism. Ageism means when someone discriminates a person according to their age. The patient feels that because she is old, the carers will think controlling her and not provide her with the care she needs is satisfying and the right thing to do. As well as this, the carers believe that old people are irrelevant and do not have feelings since old patients are near the end of their lives. The patient (old lady) also states how the care worker would shout at her which could make her feel small/inferior/scared compared to the carers and how whatever she says, it s irrelevant towards the carers therefore this leads her feeling isolated and alone. It lowers her confidence making her feel worthless and unwanted just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because the carer isn t aware of what the old lady needs or wants. Whenever she asks for something, the carer s would refuse, such as when the old patient chose from the food menu to eat vegetarian food as she dislikes fish or meaty products, (vegetarian) the carer didn t give her any other option apart from eating meat which the old lady doesn t prefer as her right to choice was taken away. This shows how she is being forced to do or eat things she doesn t like. The carer told her to listen to her and stop complaining about it. This could even have an effect on her religion or beliefs. Since maybe she s not allowed to eat something that s meaty. Furthermore this could affect the patient personally as she loses her rights to do what she wants. Therefore she won t argue back to prove her points and rights. Her short term will be affected as she will feel scared and threatened from the care workers as she may think that they would control what she does or hurt her if she was to complain or tell anyone. So this reinforces how her rights are very low and limited. This will affect her intellectual development because since her rights aren t being heard, she will give up trying and would consider herself unintelligent and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Pierre-Auguste Renoir Essay Pierre Auguste Renoir Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in 1841 to a tailor and dressmaker. He attended a Christian Brother s School where he was taught the rudiments of drawing. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a firm of porcelain painters, Levy Freres et Compagnie, whose workshops were near the Louvre. At the same time, he took drawing lessons from the sculptor Callouette. After serving his apprenticeship as a porcelain painter, he worked for a M. Gilbert, a manufacturer of blinds. In 1860 he became a student of Charles Gleyre and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In April, 1864 he came out 10th of 106th candidates in a sculpture and drawing examination there. Initially influenced by the Barbizon School, once he had come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had become averse to the depiction of the ephemeral, of the fleeting moment, and started to seek the art of the museums . It is in the museum that one must learn to paint. One must make the paintings of one s own time, but it is there in the museum that one develops the taste for painting, which nature alone cannot provide. The most spectacular example of the influence of Italian art on Renoir can be found in The Bathers. The hardness of outline, the smooth glossy texture and clarity of colour are the grounding for The Bathers. This can be considered his classical phase. Renoir was a remarkably versatile artist, his work ranged from portraits and scenes of Parisian life to landscapes and eventually nudes. An interest in sculpture was sparked in 1906, when a bust was made of him by Mailloll. In 1913 Renoir employed 23 year old Richard Guino as his teacher and assistant, and his collaboration with Guinno produced 14 figures and bas reliefs. Renior was blatantly anti Semitic, strongly believed in the panacea like benefits of religion, and felt that Education is the downfall of the working classes . His attitude toward women hardly coincides with the adoration of their beauty expressed in his paintings. He regarded the inferiority of women as axiomatic. His son Jean said that he once ... • 6. The Impact of Melting Ice Caps The Impact of Melting Ice Caps There is a large amount research demonstrating the impact of global warming on our planet. As the overall temperature of the Earth increases, ice and snow masses are melting. As more ice and snow is lost, the ocean s sea levels are rising. Additionally with less ice and snow, less sun light is reflected into space and instead it is absorbed by the planet. The continual absorption of the heat in sunlight gradually warms the planet along with other factors. Therefore, the loss of ice caps, glaciers, and snow is furthering the increase in the temperature of the planet. The polar ice caps play an enormous role in regulating the Earth s temperature. According to Montgomery (2008), polar ice reflects close to 90 percent of rays from the sun back into space. However, our dark oceans only bounce back around 10 percent of solar radiation (Calvin, 2008). One of the most important properties of that both ice and snow share is a very high albedo. Albedo is the amount of solar radiation reflected from an object or a surface (Cousineau, 2011). As glaciers and ice caps melt due to a process called thermal expansion, the tendency of matter to change in volume as a response to a change in temperature (Archer, 2007), our ocean s sea levels are rising at an extremely fast rate. Worldwide our sea levels have risen 4 8 inches throughout the 20th century (Wunderground, 2013). With the loss of ice caps and the gain of more water in our oceans less and ... • 7. Flower Morphology And Honey Bees Flower Morphology. Flowers in blueberry are characterized by their bell shaped corollas, with stamens and anthers inside and a stigma sometimes protruding past the flower aperture (Eck and Mainland, 1971) (Figure 1). Blueberry flowers have elongated corolla tubes and poricidal anthers, which tends to make pollination by honey bees difficult (Ritzinger and Lyrene, 1999). Variation in flower size and morphology between cultivars has been shown to impact insect foraging activity and, as a result, fruit set (Courcelles et al., 2013). Corolla length and aperture diameter appear to be some of the most important floral traits for pollen and nectar accessibility to honey bees, which impacts pollination and fertilization. As shown by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, it is well established that fertilization and yields are significantly increased when flowers are cross pollinated (Ehlenfeldt, 2001; Krebs and Hancock, 1990; Vander Kloet, 1984; Vander Kloet and Lyrene, 1987; Wood, 1968). Yields are also generally increased through cross pollination with the aid of insect pollinators (Ehlenfeldt, 2001; Krebs and Hancock, 1990). Generally, fewer tetrads of outcrossed pollen are required to reach pollen load saturation than with self pollination (Parrie and Lang, 1992). However, pollen tubes from self pollinated plants grow at the same rate as outcrossed pollen once germination occurs (Krebs and Hancock, 1988; Vander Kloet and Lyrene, 1987). Only a fraction of ovules develop into seeds, with over 100 ovules being common to highbush blueberry fruit and fewer than 50 seeds forming (Pritts et al., 1992). Seed number is positively correlated to fruit size (until saturation occurs) and seed abortion is dependent on the level of self fertility (Pritts et al., 1992; Vestrheim et al., 1996). Pollination in highbush blueberry. In blueberry production, commercially managed honey bees, specifically the Italian honey bee (Apis mellifera ligustica ; commonly referred to as honey bee ) are primarily responsible for pollination. Wet and cool spring weather limits honey bee activity and subsequently can negatively affect pollination and fruit set. The Northeastern region of the United States, including Michigan, is ... • 8. Analysis Of My Dream Dream In my dream, I saw my stepmom talking to a group of men. This group of men looked like they were part of a bike gang, and they all had either a knife or a gun on them. The group of men had scary tattoos all over them, leather vests, and distressed jeans on with boots. The men took off and were headed to an apartment complex in search of someone. They didn t knock on any doors or try to break into a specific apartment; they were just walking around looking for someone outside the apartment buildings. She also added that when she was living with her, she felt like her stepmom did not love her and that from the very beginning she was trying to separate her from her dad. Then, when I ask her to tell me about her dad, she went on to tell me that her dad and her, have always had a close bond, and that she feels until this day that she has to protect her dad from her stepmom, as she has done some pretty bad stuff to her dad during and after their marriage. I then ask the dreamer to explain what her stepmom has done to her dad in the past and now that they are divorce? She discloses that when her dad was marry, her stepmom was not a very responsible caregiver because she used to leaved her dad to take care of all the children and all of the responsibilities of the house, and when her stepmom returned home there always seem to be a lot of conflicts between her and her dad as he was starting to suspect that she was probably cheating on him, but he was never sure if that was true or not. • 10. Types Of Compensation For Employees Types of Compensation Natalie A. Szczep August 15, 2015 Intermediate Accounting II Keiser University Abstract There are many different forms of compensation that employers pay to their workers. The accounting treatment of these various forms of pay are different depending on the type, frequency and amounts of compensation due. Each type of compensation also has different disclosures required, advantages and disadvantages based on the accounting rules. The following pages will take a closer look at three forms of compensation: base wages, vacation pay, and bonuses. Salaries expense is the most basic type of compensation to be accounted for. Salary is compensation paid to an employee for services rendered to a company. The entries recorded to pay salaries are entered based on the pay cycle of the company, whether it is weekly, biweekly, monthly or bimonthly, etc. These pay cycles do not always coincide with the issuing of financial statements, and the income statement must show total expenses for that period. Expenses for salaries are accrued, to show that the amounts have been earned, even if the pay date occurs after the end of the accounting period and therefore, the issuing of the income statement (Averkamp, 2015). The accrual for salaries expense is classified as a current liability on the balance sheet per the FASB code 210 10 45 8c (Asc.fasb.org, 2015). Book Review Of Ishmael Beah Introduction The author of this book, Ishmael Beah was forced to become a child soldier at 12 years old due to the civil war occurring in his home country of Sierra Leone which first began in 1991. After Ishmael s home village of Mogbwemo was attacked by rebels he was separated from his family, forcing him to flee. Without a home or a family to take care of him, Ishmael then spent months wandering with a group of other boys who had been displaced by the war. While taking refuge in a village protected by the government army, Ishmael was forced to fight for the government against the rebels which ultimately ended up lasting for almost 3 years. Life changed for Ishmael in January 1996, when UNICEF aid workers took him and other child soldiers to a rehabilitation center in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Although hesitant at first, Ishmael eventually began to trust the workers and took a special liking to Esther, a nurse who played an integral role in his rehabilitation. By September of 1996, Ishmael was rehabilitated and was speaking in front of the UN where he discussed the effects of war on children and shared his story. Returning to Sierra Leone, Ishmael stayed with his last living relative, uncle Tommy which is short lived as the rebels invade Freetown and shortly after uncle Tommy dies after contacting a fever. Fearing that if he stayed he would join the army, Ishmael fled to the neighbouring Guinea so he could get a flight to the United States where he would stay with Laura Simms, a story teller he met while at the UN and who would end up adopting him. Analysis There are two major structural conditions which ultimately led to Ishmael becoming a child soldier which are the nature of war and poverty. During times of war there is no escaping the violence and uncertainty that follows it. Ishmael is a prime example of this as the nature of war heavily contributed to him becoming a child soldier. This is first seen when Ishmael is attacked by villagers that feared he and his friends were rebel spies. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the dawn of Chinese economic reform under Deng Xiaoping in 1978 promised to produce somewhat parallel long term results for two of the world s largest economies. Although China and Russia mirrored each other in the nature of the transitions they were undertaking at the time, their trajectories for future economic and political change are now diverging. The USSR had experienced two decades of stability under Brezhnev, but this era was coupled with rising corruption and weighty foreign policy issues like the US arms race and the invasion of Afghanistan. Contrasting economic preconditions of the movement toward market based models also influenced patterns of change and development in Russia and China at the end of the 20th century. For example, by the close of the 1980 s, Russia stood as a seasoned industrial power with a sizeable, well educated, urban labor force. Militarily, it was on par with the United States and had developed a strong presence in science and technology development. Contrastingly, when China began its own transition almost a decade earlier, at the end of the 1970 s its economy was still predominantly rooted in agriculture. 80% of the nation s population (as compared with 15% for Russia) consisted of uneducated agrarian peasantry, and the country had little stake in industry or scientific innovation. In the wake of the soviet state s collapse, Russia faced a dropping population and a deficit of available labor, while China s population was considered very large relative to its productivity. • 13. Enframing In this quote Heidegger is expressing what the essence of modern technology is. The essence of modern of technology is Enframing. Enframing is way of revealing, it is an imposition in which humans view the world as ready to use, standing reserve, and disposable. The reason why Enframing is challenging is due to the notion that we view nature as a force that can not only be subdued, but be used to for our benefit. Nature no longer just exists but rather can now be viewed as a potential power source than can be harnessed, but stored for later use. This notion of standing reserve has only become more prevalent with the rise of renewable energy, especially when one considers solar energy. The main benefits of solar power is not only something than can be extracted for usage while the sun is out, but the fact that it can be stored and exploited when the sun is not readily available. ... A range of small and large volumes of DI water were drawn using three different sized pipettes and massed using an analytical balance. The weights of the water aliquots were divided by the appropriate density of water at 26 to calculate the actual volumes delivered. Error percent analysis was then utilized to deduce the deviation from the accurate volumes. The three different sizes of pipettes used were Epprendorf 10, 100 and 1000 L. So, the government took action and passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982. II. Main Idea #2 A. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 was the start of establishing a permanent nuclear disposal site by 1998. 1. With its accelerated population over the last years, it s economic value has flourished its economy to a wide extent. There is also a saying, that with every good thing, there is always something bad. That s when China s environmental factors come to play. In the last twenty years, the quality of life in china has been decaying. The air surrounding most of the major cities in china are filled with horrible, toxic chemicals that has brought worldwide attention to this issue. Not only that, but contaminated and scarce water in China also play large roles in the impact of the environment. I believe that the increase in population, coal processing, and manufacturing of goods, have brought about environmental damages, but has also created economic stability. In the Shanxi Province sits Linfen, one of the most polluted cities not only china but the world. Since 1978, Linfen has been China s number one resource in coal producing energy. China needed large amounts of sufficient energy for its big manufacturers and for its rapid increase in population. Blacks, unfortunately, were thought to not have a history, or at least one not worth examining, in the American existence and even within world civilization. However, such as notion is baseless. In the tens of thousands of years of civilization, Africans have witnessed and contributed to the productivity of the human existence. The great salt and gold kingdoms of the Ghanaian and Malian Empires thrived long before the Hapsburg and Bourbon dynasties rules Spain and France, respectively. Yet, the contributions of those great African civilizations were often ignored in the historiography of early civilizations. The hot topic is extremely controversial and is not only debated by physical therapists but by acupuncturists as well. The primary issue is whether dry needling should actually be considered under the physical therapists scope of practice. The controversial aspect arises because the dry needling technique is technically invasive because the skin is being punctured. Another issue that comes about this topic is the insufficient amount of research conducted. (Benefits/Side Effects) In addition, dry needling is also not currently included in the DPT programs curriculum. Therefore, those physical therapists who want to acquire this skill it is required to be learned in a continuing education course. When this period came to an end, the littoral countries of the IOR to a certain extent rediscovered some of the economic, social and cultural facets that made the ocean the bridge between Africa, Asia and Australia . Some sort of bacteria could sweep through the country killing different food plants. The more important part of the shortage of food however would not be the causes, but the effects. The stance of the country s economy, the well being of middle and lower class families, and the quality of stores that used to sell the products would all decline greatly if an event as severe as an extreme shortage of food were to occur. General stores generate a large profit from the sale of food. Some stores like Whole Foods and King Soopers do not sell much besides food products. If there were to be a severe shortage of food, stores like Whole Foods, Walmart, Costco, and King Soopers would take a severe hit in terms of income and the ability to compete with other stores. Places like these would not be able to keep up financially if there were a lack of people buying their food products. There are other non food products that these stores may sell, but these other products would not be able to sell due to the fact that people would be focusing more on ways to get food rather than buying a new T.V. or a new pair of shoes. By the end date, it aims to reduce household waste to 700kg/person and to increase the diversion rate of paper, plastic, glass and metal scraps to 70%, and of organic waste to 60% (MDDELCC, 11). • 42. The Main Difference Between Opera And Musical Theatre When imagining opera one cannot help but picture the iconic pigtailed woman wearing the horned helmet and holding a spear. This image certainly is an element of opera (Bloom) yet the discipline holds much more. Since its origins in sixteenth century Italy (Parker) opera has been fundamental to the performing arts. By understanding its rich history as well as its contemporary trends arts administrators may continue to present this beloved art form to their audiences. The word opera, in its modern sense as a composition in which poetry, dance, and music are combined , was first used in 1639. Shortly following was the earliest documented English usage in 1648 ( Opera ). What is the major difference between opera and musical theatre? A famous composer named Stephen Sondheim has said that It s about the expectation of the audience. When it s on Broadway, people expect mediocre singing and good acting; when it s in an opera house, people expect mediocre acting and good singing (qtd. In Leigh) The first composition called an opera was Dafne by Jacopo Peri and it was created around 1597. The composer was inspirited by Florentine humanists who were elite at that time. It is noteworthy that Dafne was trying to recreate the Greek drama, which is kind of recreating the characteristic of the Renaissance in a broader view (Parker). There are four main periods of opera history. In the Baroque period (1590 1750), there were two dominated composers named Jacopo Peri and Claudio ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Great Depression And Economic Depression Essay Summary The Great Depression was an economic depreciation in Europe, North America and other industrialized areas globally that commenced in 1929 and endured until about 1939. The depression stirred severe effects in the U.S.A that left its economy on the brink of a downfall. The research investigates the causes and reasons that influenced the great recession in the United States of America. The causes comprise of the hazardous decline of the Stock Market in that occurred in 1929 which sent the Wall Street in a panic turmoil that wiped out the main investors. Similarly, the declines of over 9000 banks influence the great depression. Purchasing powers of the population decreased drastically as the citizens from all walks of life stopped purchasing items due to economic fears and the fall of the stock market. The nation s financial strategy that increased trade tariffs with Europe was also a significant impediment that triggered the great economic depression. International debts were a major aspect as well since the World War drove most European nations into dept with America. The paper also outlines the reasons that influenced the economic depression to last long. The depression ended up riddled with stagnated effects that subjected the economy to a slow recovery process. Economists acknowledge pathological factors to its long lasting tenure. The fact that governments strategies did more harm than good to the economy riddled the progress stagnant. • 44. Design Patterns Literature Review Chapter One Introduction What is a Design Pattern? A design pattern solves a problem within a given context. The solution that is offered by implementing a pattern results in a system design structure, which balances the concerns of the design problem in a manner most appropriate for the given context. In Understanding and Using Patterns in Software Development , Dirk Riehle and Heinz Zullighaven offer a rather nice definition of what a design pattern is: A pattern is the abstraction from a concrete form which keeps recurring in specific non arbitrary contexts. The ability to write good patterns is very difficult. A pattern should not only convey the facts about a system, but it should also tell a story about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The patterns described in the GoF book are illustrated in C++; a programming language that has been declining in use over the last number of years, which limits the learning of patterns in today s development environment where the dominant programming language taught and used, as far as patterns are concerned is Java, although patterns can be implemented in any object orientated programming language. The patterns exhibited are described in very concise and restricted examples that lack a comprehensive context in order for the reader to gain a full understanding of the use of the pattern in question. The patterns throughout the book are also presented in isolation to each other which hinders the illustration of pattern interaction and thus the full benefit to those wishing to learn how to implement design patterns. Allen Holub produced a book Holub on Patterns Learning Design Patterns by Looking at Code , which detailed the use of design patterns while developing a game called Game of Life. The Game of Life is a cellular automation program, which begins with cells that are classed as either alive or dead . The idea is then that each cell follows a set of rules to determine which whether it can live or whether it must die . Holubs book, published in 2004 addressed some of the shortcomings of the GoF publication, such as the patterns were now demonstrated in Java, which has become the favoured language of the software development industry, ... • 45. Physics of Aristotle Essay The great Greek thinker Aristotle was born in 384 B.C. in Stagirus, a city in ancient Macedonia in northern Greece. At the age of eighteen Aristotle went to Athens to begin his studies at Plato s Academy. He stayed and studied at the Academy for nineteen years and in that time became both a teacher and an independent researcher. After Plato s death in 347 B.C. Aristotle spent twelve years traveling and living in various places around the Aegean Sea. It was during this time that Aristotle was asked by Philip of Macedon to be a private tutor to his son, Alexander. Aristotle privately taught Alexander for three years before he returned to Athens after Philip gained control of the Greek capital. During this period back in Athens Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Physics Aristotle deduces that there must be two main principles of change. These principles are 1) matter and 2) form. Matter stays the same in general composition throughout change much as a rock would stay the same even after being broken into several small pieces. Form, however, is what changes through various processes. In order to prevent an infinite regression of argument, Aristotle came up with the his famous idea of the Prime Mover, which exists outside the earth somewhere in the heavens and is ultimately responsible for all change on earth. Aristotle s physics separated the universe into two main areas: the terrestrial realm and the celestial realm. The terrestrial realm was composed of the four elements: earth, wind, water and fire, which could each be either hot, wet, dry or cold, and the celestial realm made of ether, or what Aristotle called the quintessence. The basic assumption of Aristotelian physics was that the natural state of terrestrial matter is at rest, and that earth air and water would continually strive to reach their natural place at the center of the earth unless impeded by an impenetrable surface like the ground or a ceiling. He assumed that the natural resting place of fire was somewhere above the earth but below the moon. this model held that the complicated nature of the circulation of the air was a result of the conflict between fire, which was trying to ... • 46. Critical Analysis Of Faces Of Japan Bias and preposterous assumptions about a foreign society are a detriment to the image of that society. Creating a burden to the future comprehension of said society. Doctor David C. Unger, former foreign affairs editorial writer for the New York Times, has stated and debunked said stereotypes in his editorial titled Faces of Japan. In it, Unger argues that Japanese stereotypes are utterly incorrect and the presumptions surrounding Japanese culture are outdated. Japan s culture is not static, Japanese people are not spending every living moment in remorse after the events of WWII. Unger argues this point through the explicit comparison of Japan in 1992 to Japan in 1945. The goal that Unger is trying to achieve is to compel the audience to ... A Rose for Emily Essay Desperation for love arising from detachment can lead to extreme measures and destructive actions as exhibited by the tumultuous relationships of Miss Emily in William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily (rpt. in Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 9th ed. [Boston: Wadsworth, 2006] 556). Miss Emily is confined from society for the majority of her life by her father, so after he has died, she longs for relations that ironically her longing destroys. Her relationship with Homer Barron is a result of the life and death of her father. Ironically, he is a northern, roughneck Yankee, the exact opposite of any connection a Grierson would consider. Unsuspectingly, Emily is attracted to him, which is an oddity itself considering her lack of personality and his obvious charisma, for whenever you [hear] a lot of laughing...Homer Barron [will] be in the center of the group (560). He is also the first man to show an interest in her without her father alive to scare him off. The circumstance exhibits how her feelings are greatly intensified towards Homer. However, he is not a marrying man (561). When it appears as though he will leave her, she kills him with poison. While seemingly the opposite effect of love, killing Homer is quite in line with her obsession. If he is dead and she keeps Homer all to herself, Emily will never lose him; he can never leave her. Other such details that express her extreme attachments appear as she buys him clothes and toiletries before they are even considered married. This Amendment has accounted for many vigorous debates over the nature of its content. This has led for gun control to become an extremely controversial area of American politics. It is primarily defined by two different groups, those supporting gun control and those supporting gun rights. These groups often disagree on the interpretation of laws and court cases related to firearms. Even more so, they disagree about the effects of gun control on crime and the overall safety of the public. It is clearly in the interests, of all Americans, to reduce gun violence in the country. Each day, on an average, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United States firearm homicide rate is twenty times higher than the combined rates of twenty two countries in which are similar in wealth and population with the United States. Also, statistics show homes containing a firearm are twenty two times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self defense. Since the 1990s, debates regarding firearm availability and gun violence in the United States have been characterized by concerns about the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters believe broad, unrestricted gun rights inhibit the government from fulfilling their responsibility to protect the safety of the public. Also, these advocates state keeping guns out of the hands of criminals results in safer communities. Gun rights supporters promote firearms for self defense, hunting, sporting activities, and security against tyranny. Gun rights advocates also believe firearm ownership by law abiding citizens reduces crime. However, many of these beliefs are based on nonfactual evidence and, in fact, are quite false. Perhaps, one of the greatest myths believed today by this debate is attempts to ban the possession of handguns, or certain kinds of guns, are a viable option for reducing crime. It has often been proposed more guns mean more deaths and therefore, fewer guns would equate to fewer deaths. Unfortunately, these thoughts are all too often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
