2020 to : Newwave Group, Lilongwe, Malawi
Present Day
Position Held : Co-Founder
Main
Responsibilities: After noting that there was a lack of protection of Intellectual Property
in Malawi among musicians, I started this initiative along with my
Co-Founders to promote Malawian artists to begin uploading their
music to digital streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.
The Group initially curated playlists strictly for Malawian music. We
run campaigns on social media to teach upcoming artists how to
upload their music onto digital streaming platforms. This service was
completely free in order for them to reach a wider audience as well as
protect their intellectual property as at the time their only options
were to upload their music on free download sites and would receive
no money from it yet the websites would profit from having their
music on the sites. Hence, by sensitizing them and encouraging them
to make their music only available for streaming they are now
ensured to make a slight profit from their music and their intellectual
property. So far we have curated over 100 playlists with 1000+ songs
being featured on their playlists, and we’ve seen the impact this has
had on Malawi’s streaming culture. In 2023, after a lengthy battle, we
registered Newwave Group as a fully registered and licensed music
distribution and publishing partnership. The vision is to expand the
capacity of the already existing Malawian spaces (tv, radio, film,
advertising and public places) to include more Malawian music
through us and ensure the artists are profiting from this. My
5. 5
responsibilities during this time were setting up the accounts to curate
the playlists, curating the playlists and picking the songs, assisting in
designing the cover arts, assisting in the write-ups informing artists of
their rights in regards to their intellectual property, drafting contracts
for artist management, vetting contracts for artists. Drafting the
documents required to register Newwave Group as a partnership,
then having it licensed by the Copyright Association of Malawi for it
to be a publishing company. I also assist in the development of our
website. I also draft our distribution agreements. We have also won
the Copyright Grant by the Copyright Association of Malawi and we
are currently implementing workshops known as Ntchito Za Manja
Anga focused on sensitizing artists on their intellectual property
rights and how to manage licensing as well as how to benefit from the
works of their hands.
