Race is an arbitrary idea that human beings put on others to organize society. Each day, we receive
millions of gigabytes of information that is to be stored within one s memory. In order to organize
all the collected information, we subconsciously reorganize them into bins. Humans are constantly
organizing disorder, it is only natural. Thus, organizing other humanbeings into categories is
natural. One of the most common way people are sorted is by their skin color. Worldwide, the
five largest racial groups include: white, black, Hispanic, and Asian. Each racial group is very
general and include many sub groups. Each racial group is distinguished by one s skin color. For
instance, if one s skin is on the paler side of the spectrum, he or she would be identified as white....
Other racial groups, such as Hispanic and Asian, are identified based on where the individual
would fall on the color spectrum. If one has a yellow undertone to their skin, he or she would be
considered Asian. If one is a honey er or warm undertone, he or she could be considered Hispanic.
Despite these guidelines, the idea of race is very loose because of racial mixing through marriage.
We classify race for the purpose of organization and identity. When one comes to age, he or she
often questions their place in the world. Young adults look to discover themselves in all aspects
of their lives. This is done through identification and classification. Young children start with
classifying items by their surrounding. Colors go with like colors and shapes go with the same
shapes. As we grow up, we start to classify more complex ideas like information and people. We

I call this practice reflexive embodied empathy .
To define and explicate this concept, I start by exploring some of the literature on empathy. There
is an extensive empirical literature on empathy in the fields of neuroscience (see Thompson, 2001)
and social psychology (see Davis, 1994). However, I confine my discussion here to the equally
extensive (though sometimes overlooked) literature from phenomenology. Here, I draw on a range
of theoretical ideas but the philosophical ideas of Husserl (1928/1989) on intersubjectivity and of
Merleau Ponty (1964/1968) on embodiment as intertwining are particularly influential. While the
focus in this literature review is on empathy, concepts related to embodiment and reflexivity are
integral.
The literature review is followed by an analysis of the concept of reflexive embodied empathy in
practice. I use three examples of significant moments from various hermeneutic phenomenological
research projects to demonstrate reflexive analysis of my own embodied, intersubjective
relationships with participants. I characterize these moments of reflective involvement with the
data as fluid, interpermeating layers whereby different dimensions of experience are called to the

Laboratory of Neural Systems, Decision Science, Learning and Memory (NSDSLM), also known as
the Mizumori lab, seeks to understand the plasticity mechanisms within neural systems that
underlie normal and pathological mnemonic functions. The principal investigator of this lab, and
my primary research mentor is Dr. Sheri Mizumori. Upon joining the Mizumori lab, I have been
shadowing Dr. Phillip Baker on his postdoctoral researchproject. He introduced me to laboratory
research study and facilitated in the progressive improvement of my comprehension in basic
neuroscienceresearch.
The initial study that I began working on with Dr. Baker was about lateral habenula s (LHb)
involvement in behavior switching when presented with a cue. The LHb is a structure identified
for its role in signaling negative outcomes or cues (Bomberg Martin et al, 2011; Proulex et al,
2014). It projects to dopaminergic, serotoninergic, and norepinephrine systems that are
acknowledged to be important when switches in behavior are required (Robbins and Arnsten,
2009; Lecourtier and Kelly, 2007). My responsibilities in this study mainly included handling and
training rats, recording of rat behaviors through a series of sensors and robotic doors around the T
maze controlled by z basic, and evaluating data from training and testing rats in a tonal task. I also
