Viking Raiders Essay
Beginning in about A.D. 800, many Scandinavians sailed south from their homelands to seek their
fortunes. These seafaring warriors began by raiding coastal sites of the British Isles but soon grew
more ambitious. During the next three centuries, they left their mark as traders, pirates and settlers on
much of Britain and the European continent. These raiders became known collectively as Norsemen,
or Northmen, though they are better remembered by another name: Vikings.
Most Vikings came from the regions of Scandinavia now known as Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
However, they were not united by race or nationality. To the people they raided, the Vikings shared
several common features. They were great sailors, ferocious fighters, and hailed from ... Show more

After 830, though, the Vikings took advantage of conflicts in Europe to extend their activity further
inland. In some cases, rulers were willing to pay off the Norsemen in exchange for being left alone.
Viking leaders soon realized they could make deals with kingdoms seeking to be left alone or even
desperate for protection.
By the mid 800s, the lands of Ireland, Scotland and England were attracting Viking settlers as well as
raiders. Viking settlers founded Ireland s first trading towns, including Dublin and Limerick. They
used ports on the Irish coast to launch attacks within Ireland and against English

Italian Food In The 1970s
America has seen numerous waves of immigrants which brought their own culture and cuisine. With
time various cuisines became very popular nationwide and not just within the original consuming
communities. One of the most popular ethical foods in the United States is Italian food. It gained its
popularity long time ago and since lots of Italian dishes became leaders in restaurants. Due to growing
interest of general public to Italian food numerous food restaurant networks have emerged in the
United States. Moreover, only one third of so called Italian food is imported from Italy. This suggests
that many products are fake and many people take advantage of popularity of Italian food. Sometimes
manufacturers name their products Italian but they have nothing in common with authentic Italian
food.
Italian food has begun its invasion in North America in nineteen century as the third waves of Italian
immigrants came to the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, people become more and more acquainted with the food because of press and television.
The recipes of Italian dishes were available and preparation was relatively easy. The major difference
about representation of Italian food in the 1960s and 1970s was that social status and welfare was not
targeted by popular magazines. Moreover, the ability to examine foods and make own preparations
were given an unprecedented importance. The Americans could exercise their competence, distinction,
and good taste according to their own individual style (Cinotto 5). However, authenticity became the
most important value of Italian food, the visitors of Italian restaurants expected their chefs to focus on
the use of authenticity of recipes, techniques for cooking and other things. In late 1970 s, this aspect
became a focus for popular magazines which quickly engaged in production of cultural

Meditation Write-Up
Meditation Write Up Initially, I was nervous to begin daily meditations because I had tried to meditate
before and I could never truly calm my mind from the thousands of thoughts that would swirl around.
However, after meditating for fifteen minutes daily for a week, I can now say that I have become more
comfortable with meditation, but it was a challenging week. At many times, I felt uncomfortable
sitting in silence because my thoughts would constantly distract me from trying to focus on my
breathing. Yet, as the week progressed, I noticed that I became more comfortable with the practice.
Surprisingly, time passed very quickly when I meditated, it felt as though it was roughly five minutes,
when it was really fifteen minutes. As well, the

Price Control Essay
The price ceiling is the maximum price a seller is allowed to charge for a product or service. An
impact on society includes when the prices are so high of a product, that no one can buy it. A price
floor is the lowest legal price a product or service can be sold at. When market price is at its lowest, it
may still be too high for consumers to purchase products. Governments can intervene for any purpose,
and they are the ones who set these price controls.
Governments may intervene in the market system to fix prices above or below equilibrium if they
believe that it is in the public interest to do so. Governments may intervene in the provision,
regulation, maintenance and management of public goods to maximise the benefits to the ... Show

Because consumers aren t paying as much for the product, producers will not be able to produce as
much at the lower price, and consumers will demand more because the product is cheaper. The end
result will be consumers not being able to buy the product since there is not enough being made. For
example, the price of milk was $2 per litre, and has now been reduced to $1 per litre. This will be
great for consumers as they can buy more milk for less, until it runs out. Therefore price ceilings have
a good impact on consumers.
For producers, price ceilings don t have as good an impact as it does on consumers. Since the
consumers are paying much less money for goods and services, they simply cannot afford to make any
products. It will have a harmful effect on producers, as their surplus will decrease, resulting in them
not making as much product. For example, if the price of lettuce decreases from $7 to $5, then that
means a decrease in the amount of money producers are getting. They will not have enough money to
grow lettuce, so there will be none or little lettuce harvested to be sold. This means that price ceilings
have a large impact on producers, and not in a good way.
If the government puts in a price ceiling, then the quantity demanded will exceed the quantity
supplied, meaning that not enough goods or services will be supplied to satisfy demand. This situation
is called a shortage. Because price ceilings are installed in the interests of

Horror The Supernatural Genre Essay
Horror The Supernatural Genre Horror is an ancient genre, it roots lodged in ancient myth and
folklore. Since then the genre has evolved, even sometimes doing without elements of the supernatural
on which the original horror stories where founded. Despite the emergence of natural horror, horror
which incorporates elements of the supernatural still remains superior. While horror can be successful
using only natural circumstances, horror that utilizes elements of the supernatural evokes a more
effective response from the reader. A Rose for Emily is a good example of horror which contains no
supernatural elements. While pieces of the story contain the unusual or violate societal taboos the
story conforms very much to the way in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An overriding element which makes the story so effective is the use of the supernatural, which allows
Lovecraft to create beings to terrible to exist in the world we know. Throughout the story pervades a
sense of the unknown, of some ancient mystery which mortal man should never venture to know. The
story evicts a visceral sense of horror from the reader, one of realization of what might happen if such
things were ever to exist. While any sane person would never claim that a giant god from the stars will
ever rise out of the ocean to destroy the world, the reader can nonetheless envision such a horrific
event. The Call of Cthulu shows how effective the supernatural can be in horror. Another excellent
Lovecraft story that incorporates the supernatural is Nyarlathotep. The plot centers on the arrival of
Nyarlathotep, a modern day prophet who throws the world into madness. The entire basis for the story
is the supernatural, the predestined end of man which comes bellowing out of the depths of antiquity.
While short in length the story nevertheless manages to build a sense of dread before Lovecraft
unleashes the terrible truth of Nyarlathotep s purpose upon the reader. Unlike The Call of Cthulu
Nyarlathotep ends with evil succeeding, in the world being engulfed by unspeakable horrors. The tale
truly grabs the reader with a pervading

A Research On Big Data
Big Data is a term for very large amounts of formal and informal information that can be analyzed to
find trends and patterns. The information can be about anything, but it needs to be processed in a way
that will give it value and relevance. It can come in multiple formats and from different sources such
as large databases, electronic records, social media, mobile phones, apps, wearable devices such as
pedometers, and others. Different data sets are combined and contrasted in different ways to give
perspectives and insights about a topic. It can be used in a seemly endless number of ways and people
are discovering new ways to use it all the time, some of them entertaining. The largest areas of use
include those relating to consumer behavior and choices, business procedures, healthcare, science and
research, and law enforcement. People are also discovering its use in their personal lives as well for
things like buying a home, dating, fitness routines and travel. With all the potential benefits that can
come from big data, however, it also brings a big potential for privacy problems. Extensive personal
data can be gathered about people that can be used or abused. In an interview with Harvard Business
Review, With Big Data Comes Big Responsibility, Professor Alex Sandy Pentland from MIT talks
about his New Deal on Data to address data collection and privacy. The concept is a set of principles

Analysis Of Alfonso Cuaron s Children Of Men
STATEMENT This essay analyses how mise en scene informs both what is seen and how we are
invited to see it, in Alfonso Cuaron s Children of Men (2006), a dystopian science fiction thriller. The
film is set in England in 2027 and humanity has become infertile. Every other society has collapsed
due to dwindling populations with many migrating to England a former activist, Theo Faron (Clive
Owen), agrees to help, Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore), to get Kee a miraculously pregnant woman to a
sanctuary at sea. The aim of this essay is to investigate the power of mise en scene, specifically in the
use of setting and staging in key scenes that frames the state of affairs in this imaginary society and
the use of omnipresent media in the film and how audience is invited to see it by resembling their own
reality. Using close textual anlysis of Children of Men, combined with an ideological critique of post
9/11 global, this analysis will demonstrate how Alfonso Cuaron s uses the techniques of mise en scene
show the audience a perception of reality in ways which invites them to debate the nature of
contemporary society or politics . Key words: mise en scene, staging, setting.

playfulness and humor to the story. Before watching the movie, I paused before pressing play on my

Terror Attacks during a Time of War: Vietnam War Attack on the US Embassy in Saigon Over the
course of the Vietnam War there were four attacks on the US Embassy of South Vietnam. The first
incident occurred on March 30, 1965, when the Vietcong detonated a car bomb outside the embassy.
The car contained roughly three hundred pounds of explosives. The explosion killed two Americans,
one of whom was a female CIA employee. In addition to the two dead Americans, nineteen
Vietnamese and one Filipino who were serving in the U.S. Navy. One hundred and eighty three others

The Vietnam War Was A Long And Costly Conflict
Causes if the Vietnam War
Before WWII Vietnam belonged to the French Empire but during the war, it was taken over by the
Japanese but since they were being defeated they retreated back to Japan. This gave the chance to the
Vietnamese people to create their own government led by Ho Chi Minh but at the end of the war, the
south was given back to the french while the north was led by the Chinese, who was not communist at
the time, so Ho Chi Minh lost all his power. When the Chinese pulled out in 1946 the Ho Chi Minh
party took over The Viet Minh and by October the French stated their intention of reuniting back with
north but it would all be under the french rule so the Viet Minh prepared to fight back. War started in

The North Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviet Union, China and other communist allies
whereas the South Vietnamese army were supported by the United States, South Korea, Australia,
Thailand and other Anti communist countries. The Vietnam war took place because North Vietnam
was fighting to unify Vietnam but the US intervened and helped the communist takeover. This was
part of a larger plan from the US to eliminate communism.
Major Significant Events:
The Spring Offensive
The 1975 Spring Offensive was a series of large offensive operations to force south Vietnam and it s
rallied back and eventually defeat the armed forces.and force the government to surrender. After initial
success, North Vietnam increased its attack and continued to push forward. This was also the initial
idea of the Easter offensive in 1972 but it failed due to strong US forces but due to decreases in
American military aid which was south Vietnam s main power the spring offensive was successful.
Unable to fight back and cope without the large US support south Vietnam collapsed causing large
numbers of casualties. South Vietnam s immediate action was to regroup its forces and decrease the
area that its troops had to defend, thereby surrendering space for time. However, due to a
miscommunication, lack of authority and management lead to the loss of Buôn Ma Thuột and a

The Discovery Of Penicillin During World War II
In 1928, after the careless mistake of forgetting to clean his dishes, Alexander Fleming discovered
penicillin. The scientific community still celebrates his discovery since it was a major breakthrough in
science, especially in the antibiotics and fermentation field. Although his discovery changed various
scientific fields and it opened the doors for research in areas not studied or considered relevant before,
the actual usefulness of penicillin was truly reached until the large scale production of penicillin was
achieved. Before its manufacturing penicillin was considered for researching purposes, but after its
manufacturing during World War II, it truly became helpful for humanity because it could finally start
performing within its antibiotic spectrum. Although it is true that the discovery of penicillin was
attributed to Alexander Fleming, the response of the rest of the scientific community was crucial in
order to achieve the large scale production of penicillin. After the incalculable loss of life during
World War II, the scientific community was urged to unite and work together for the development of
the large scale production of penicillin. Faced with the challenge of producing a sufficient amount of
penicillin in order to start shipping it as an antibiotic, scientists from all over the world started
working on feasible fermentation methods to make their set goal a reality. The first attempt started
with Norman Heatley, an Oxford biochemist.
Heatley believed that

Tackling The War On Drugs ( Cd ) And Combating...
INTRODUCTION
Tackling the War on Drugs (CD) and Combating Transnational Crime Organizations (TCO) is an
important national security problem. While addressing this issue in a scholastic forum, I immersed
myself into this problem set using the guidance of assuming the role of Colonel Tim Killian. Utilizing
the provided case and the ADIA framework and course concepts, I reviewed and assessed the
information presented. The goal of Joint Task Force North (JTFN) J 5 is to develop a strategy for
military support to counter drug efforts and more broadly fight transnational organized crime.
In this paper, I have negotiated the decision cycle and reviewed implementation choices, which leads
to another analysis process in grading the progress. Keeping with the examination s pretext, my
approach employs each of the four framework pieces, which essentially ask five straightforward
queries. In the Assess step, Who am I and where are we? In the Decide step, Where should we go? In
the Implement step, How do we get there? And finally, in the Assure step, Are we getting there? These
questions formed the template that assisted in traversing the problem set, seeing the fullness of the
situation, and to formulate plans toward addressing the problems of CD and TCOs.
WHO AM I and WHERE ARE WE?
Personal Assessment: I have assumed the role of Colonel Tim Killian as the Joint Task Force North, J

Kodak And Its First Snapshot Camera

the company developed its first snapshot camera and became an American household name. Over
time, Kodak believed that most of their money came from film, which caused the company to lose
focus on their equipment. However, by the 1960s, Kodak started to introduce new products that
focused on medical imaging and graphic arts. One of the key players in the industry is Polaroid. In
1969, Polaroid s patents on instant photography expired, giving Kodak a huge opportunity. Eventually

In 1998, Kodak lost market share when Fuji cut their prices. As a result of this price war, by the end of
1999 the company has to cut $1.2 billion in costs and 19,900 jobs, or about one fifth of its payroll, the
most severe cutback ever at Kodak (Gavetti, Henderson and Giorgi 10). By 2001, Kodak was losing
$60 on every digital camera it sold (Gavetti, Henderson and Giorgi 10). During its time, Kodak has
faced multiple legal issues. One issue they faced was an antitrust suit with independent service
organizations. Kodak controls most of the service market and the market for its replacement parts. The
independent service organizations argued that Kodak was trying to force them out of business by
restricting their access to replacement parts and by trying to insure that customers for its business
machines either service the machines themselves or buy service directly from Kodak (Greenhouse).
Kodak was being accused of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. The service companies believed that
Kodak was unlawfully tying the sale of service for Kodak machines to the sale of parts, and
unlawfully trying to monopolize the market for service (Greenhouse). According to the textbook,
Section 1 of the Sherman Act states that it is illegal to restraint trade in contract, trust or conspiracy
and Section 2 condemns any person who monopolizes or attempts to monopolize. (Clarkson, Miller

Unfortunately, other items are much harder to divide when jointly owned. For example, a small
business that is owned by two people will have another owner to contend with. While the other owner
may feel like they deserve to inherit the other half of the company, you may have your own thoughts
on who you want to leave it for. Disputes like these will be settled in probate.
Be sure you get documentation for jointly owned assets that states how all owners agree for the asset
to be divided after someone s death. This will help avoid any disputes later on.

Reflection Paper On The Tazaie Prayer
Taizé Prayer
At the Taizé prayer, the area with the altar and candles was inviting. First the silence for about 10
minutes, then the music played, followed by long pauses for praying and reading the scriptures
together. The prayer around the Jesus cross in the center was about to begin when a person placed the
cross on the ground and next to the cross a pillow for people to kneel and express their burdens. After
about ten minutes, the prayer around the cross continued, but this time the cross was moved to a table.
People freely approached the cross at the table and placed their heads on it or kissed the cross. After a
few more prayers were said aloud, then the final prayer was said followed by a song as the closing.
From this opportunity of praying in a group, I learned about the gifts and challenges of prayer while
reflecting in silence and listening to the meditative music.
The Taizé prayer is an opportunity to reflect on your day or your life and pray with others together.
This was my first time in a Taizé prayer, I have never heard about it before this class. The Taizé prayer
is a different way from how I am used to communicating with God. The prayer is centered on a

acknowledge the cross statue in the center by kneeling in front or kissing the statue. The prayer relates

Views on Health Care Reform Evaluated Essay
While many political issues are controversial and emotional for voters in America, few issues have
created an outcry in recent years like the debate over health care reform. The arguments for and
against such a comprehensive overhaul of the United States health care system are numerous and wide
ranging, as demonstrated by the scores of showings of support and protest against it. While it seems
unlikely that few in the country could understand all of the ramifications of such a large bill, virtually
everyone could find something they liked or did not like in the bill. Indeed, the one unifying aspect of
all of the debate over the reform was the fact that everyone acknowledged that reform was needed, but

Critics have also pointed out the fact that other countries with similar or more drastic health care

funding and delivery allowing for choice in heath care, may actually perpetuate health inequity. While
such systems might ensure equity for patients with AMI, where guidelines for treatment are relatively
well established, this is not the case for care of patients with angina, where high technology health
care may be less urgent and more discretionary. (Clements, Kelman, Korda, 2009)
While comparing countries is invariably a difficult task given the wide varience in governments,
cultural tendencies and economic realities, the Australian method is quite similar to the health care
reform bill, and should give its supporters pause. At the very least, the results of the Australia should
give us pause as we implement our system and attempt to avoid the problems that they have had,
rather than avoiding that type of system at all. Our current health care system has many problems, yet

Les Mistons Essay
The short film Les Mistons or otherwise translated meaning The Brats. In 1957 age 25, Truffaut is
already an accomplished writer and theorization of cinema. Along with his adoptive brothers, he is
changing the way we will think and talk about cinema. They have already changed the cinema and
discourse. Very soon all of them will make their first film. Truffaut is the first one to start to fully have
the adventure. In 1957 in the offices of ARTS, he makes a friend with a young writer and publishes a

Truffaut truly trusts the deep connection between life and cinema and he strongly believes that cinema
and life should always dialogue with each other. Truffaut was also helped by a young woman who was
named Madeleine Morgesterm whose father is Ignace Morgesterm a Jewish producer. His future father
in law will help organize and finance the making and distribution of Les Mistons. The film is shot in
one summer in the native land of Bernadette and her big house will serve as the courters for the whole
team. Cinema doesn t need to be a highly professional environment but will also have the same
atmosphere of the bohemian ways. All the directors will convince the family orientated experience in
making this film. Ignace acts as the mentor and supports this group of very young and unexperienced
artists. The shooting unfolds in the summer, Truffaut s adaptation was already very personal, we will
already see a few elements and Truffaut pays tribute to the poetic voice of the short story. In a way the
film is a visual poem, the narration is poetry. Truffaut also vey consciously adapts to the natural and
historical environment to pay tribute to his heroes. This film also exemplifies on of the aesthetic and
beliefs of the new vile vogue, the use of a real location. A new location of a visual atmosphere,

Benefits Of Adopting Electronic Health Records
Good Afternoon ladies and gentleman! I appreciate not only your time but your commitment to the
implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR). As a recap from our last meeting, hard and soft
ROI represents various benefits which can be included and used in an ROI analysis. The hard benefits
are the direct benefits which are tied to the impact of implementing the proposed solution. Soft
benefits on the other hand are less easy to quantify and rely on. Soft benefits are often referred to as
indirect, because they rely on a number of steps in order for the benefit to be realized. Today we will
focus on the soft benefits of adopting Electronic Health Records. In addition to the costs directly
associated with the EHR, such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soft ROI isn t always easy to quantify and doesn t always include hard statistical data, but this doesn t
reduce the value of soft ROI. Actually soft return factors can play a key role in improving the health
facility over the long term. The clinical data alone that comes through EHR can play an important role
in transforming the process of an organization. A study was recently completed and published in
HealthAffairs, according to this study; health care practices were able to cover the cost of the EHR in
approximately 2.5 years and then received an average of approximately $23,000 per year per full time
employee in net benefits. This study also notes that much of the ROI consisted of efficiency gains and
increases in revenue. The increases in revenue arose primarily from more accurate higher level coding,
but some providers also were able to see additional patients due to time saved from using an EHR
(Miller, West, Brown, Sim, Ganchoff, 2015) EHR systems have the potential to change the health care
system from a mostly paper based industry to one that utilizes clinical and other pieces of information
to assist providers in delivering higher quality of care to their patients. The Health Information
Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009, which is part of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed into law with an explicit purpose of
incentivizing providers to adopt EHR systems. The incentives

U.s. And Global Economy
In 2008 the U.S. and global economy confronted one of the worst crisis in the history. These financial
crisis were considered the worst since the great depression in 1930 s. Several events took a place early
in 2007 which led to the economy crash, such as, the massive decrease in home prices in the United
States after it was significantly high. This decline in home mortgage market expanded rapidly causing
massive crisis in the whole United States financial sector (Bullard, Neely, and Wheelock 2 4). Those
crisis had dangerous effects on the stock banking industry, insurance firms, and Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac, the two most important enterprises commissioned by the government to assist mortgage
lending, and some other mortgage lenders and financial service organizations. Those crisis generated a
decline in banks and financial associations trust of others, believing that they will never get paid back.
They simply stopped offering loans to people who needed money to buy a house or start a business,
which created a massive decline in the home mortgage market and the whole financial sector of the
United States (Havemann 1) There are number of issues which are believed to be the reason behind
the home mortgage market crisis that occurred in 2008. Firstly the housing bubble , the home
mortgage market problem which our economy is suffering from right now. It started with the bursting
of the U.S. housing bubble which started in 2001 and reached its highest in 2005. The

As the World keeps developing, so does the population. Today the Earth is home to just over 7 billion

Fertility rates in India are high and compared to the latter stages of the 19th and early part of the 20th
centuries growth has increased significantly. During the next decade or so, India will surpass China
making it the most populous country in the World. It is understood that it is the under developing
countries that are mostly at risk with over population, this is especially true amongst African nations.
Economically, this has caused great deal of concern amongst of the countries governing bodies. The
fact of the matter is that most people living in Africa have the lowest life expectancy due to lack of
medical establishments and food supplies. It has become clear that since the availability of jobs in
most countries around Africa is severely low, farming is mainly the biggest industry. As a result, it is

The Tempest By William Shakespeare
Brown s insistence that The Tempest is a play of steeped in ambivalence and contradictions is not
entirely unfounded, however. Prospero himself is an extremely powerful magus whose power borders
on the transcendent and divine; he is also a man obsessed with perfecting his art that, at times, can be
base and wicked. He demonstrates compassion and generosity, yet his apathetic and sometimes
contemptuous treatment of other characters raises questions about his moral sensibilities. Within the
drama of the play, these paradoxes create a dynamic that highlights the contrast between Prospero and
those who (seek to) foil him Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban characters that Brown demarcates as
masterless or othered (273). While he correctly identifies such instances of doubling, Brown conflates
these binaries as markers of colonial discourse, the colonizer and the colonized, and entirely elides the
binary of the noble and the natural. This dichotomy, which is staunchly embedded in the Renaissance
conception of natural order the great chain of being is eminent throughout the play and integral to its
thematic purpose of restoration and redemption. Brown s failure to address the great chain of being in
any capacity throughout his argument is indicative of his limited understanding of the historical
context in which The Tempest was written and the corresponding philosophical ideology that informed
Shakespeare s manifold intentions.

Cultural Pluralism Sociology
Robert E. Park was a huge contributor in establishing sociology in the United States in the 1920s and
1930s. His theory of assimilation was analyzing a social process and social interaction. Park argued
that assimilation is inevitable in a democratic and industrial society (Healey, 2017, 50). Park strongly
believed that when the American society begins to modernize, ethnic and race groups would lose
importance. This theory was proven to be true in the European immigrant groups across the 20th
century. Due to industrialization, the nature of work in America evolved and changed and created
opportunities for upward mobility for white ethnic groups (Healey, 2017, 81). A form of upward
mobility was resulted in the changes in the structure of the economy and labor market. This was called
structural mobility. The descendants of European immigrants became upwardly mobile not only
because of their individual ambitions and efforts but also because of the changing location or jobs and
the progressively greater opportunities for education available for them (Healey, 2017, 81).
Pluralism can be distinguished by two different types: cultural and structural. Cultural pluralism exists
when groups have not acculturated and each maintains its own identity. The groups might speak
different languages, practice different religions, and have different value systems (Healey, 2017, 55).
The Amish are a perfect representation of a cultural pluralism. They are separated from the dominant

Five Paragraph Essay On Night By Elie Wiesel
A cry pierces the night air. You look around in fear as you hear a woman s screams, Fire! I can see a
fire! I can see a fire! (22). There is nothing there. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There was no
way you could ever have known what was to come. The morning never came and you suddenly you
could see the flames everywhere. No one anticipated the monstrosity that would become known as the
Holocaust. Elie Wiesel certainly didn t see it coming. He was one of the many Jewish people sent to
concentration camps. Ten years after the end of World War 2 Elie decided to sit down and write his
memoir, entitled Night, about the time he spent there. It is a brutally honest look at the Holocaust.
Throughout the book there is a repeated mantra of fire. He describes the fire and smoke with vivid
detail. If you look close enough you begin to see the deeper meaning of the fire. In Night, Elie Wiesel
uses the mantra of fire to explain the terror and closeness of death that the prisoners are in constant
fear of during the Holocaust. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

camp he sees the smoke from the crematorium for the first time. The deaths of so many innocent
people occured in that death factory. Everyone around him at the camp is afraid of the dreaded place,

Controversy Over Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism is not merely a present day fashion. Human beings from
diverse cultures have practiced it since olden times. Having a vegetarian diet has been
a topic that creates conflicting opinions, and it seems that the controversy gets bigger
as time moves on. In the times that we are living in today, where we are persistently
bombarded with information through the television and Internet, it makes it hard to know
who is right and who is wrong on this issue. Embracing vegetarianism provides the
optimum benefit as it keeps a person fit as a fiddle, with the added benefits of being

USDA includes meat as part of a balanced diet, but it also states that a
vegetarian diet can meet the recommended dietary allowances for

health, wastes resources, causes deforestation, and creates pollution.
They often argue that killing animals for food is cruel and unethical since
non animal food sources are plentiful. Many opponents of a vegetarian
diet say that meat consumption is healthful and humane, and that
producing vegetables causes many of the same environmental problems
as producing meat. They also argue that humans have been eating and
enjoying meat for 2.3 million years. In Western culture, vegetarianism
dates back to Ancient Greece. The mathematician Pythagoras (570 BC
495 BC) advocated vegetarianism; a meatless diet was commonly called
the Pythagorean diet until the term vegetarian became popular during
the 1800s. The philosopher Plato (428 BC 348 BC) described a
vegetarian diet as divinely ordained ( Should People ).

Religious Influence In The Aztec s Judicial System
The Aztec Empire upheld a very sophisticated, potent, and harsh legal system. The judicial system
they had resembles a modern one today: it was made up of multiple courts with differing levels of
jurisdiction, such as trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. Moreover, citizens could
appeal rulings to a higher court if they did not agree with the ruling they were given from the judge.
Although the Aztecs were very religious, they preferred to be swift and empirical when it came to the
law, choosing to judge a criminal without their religious beliefs interfering. This, however, did not
apply to the sentences and punishments given to the criminals. Some sentences were given without
their religion interfering, such as slavery and mutilation. In other cases, punishments, such as human
sacrifice, were for a religious purpose. These harsh sentences and punishments helped the Aztec
Empire effectively instill fear into the people, which helped maintain control.
The court system was comprised of various courts with different levels of jurisdiction. These courts
were the trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. The trial courts were known as Teccalli
courts, and heard civil and criminal cases involving commoners; civil judgments by this court were
considered final, but criminal sentences could be appealed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Mona Lisa Analysis Essay
Fieldwork #2: Media Analysis for Gender Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa
Section I: Objective Description This study serves as a gender focused analysis of Leonardo da Vinci s
Mona Lisa. The original piece of artwork was painted with oil on a white poplar panel in Florence,
Italy around 1503 during the latter part of Leonardo da Vinci s life. The artist was an Italian
Renaissance artist who had a wide variety of interests. The woman who is believed to be depicted in
the painting is Lisa Gherardini, a wife and mother of five children who married to an older man named
Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanobi del Giocondo at the age of only fifteen. The words Mona Lisa
often translate to the words Madam Lisa . Leonardo da Vinci s painting of Mona Lisa has a strong
resemblance to the description of the Virgin Mary, which during the Renaissance period was viewed
as a representation of the ideal woman. The artist achieves a sense of softness around Mona Lisa s
eyes and mouth, portraying a kindness and calmness about the woman. Nevertheless, this painting was
also one of the first portraits to have an imaginary background, Leonardo strategically placed this
mysterious background at the woman s eye level so that the two are related to one another. The
background contains a large landscape with a very long path, cold mountains towards the distance,
and a very small bridge right above her shoulder on the right side of the painting. Despite her very soft
look, something about Mona Lisa and

Russia and the Underlying Causes of Homophobia
Russia and the Underlying Causes of Homophobia
Although homophobia exists in nearly all societies, Russia has recently gained notoriety for its
intolerance of homosexual behavior. In a world that is becoming more and more accepting and
tolerant of homosexuality, Russia seems to be moving backward when it comes to LGBTQ rights.
Understandably, Russia s tumultuous political past must be a strong contributor to today s attitudes
towards homosexuality. Under the Tsars, homosexuality was a crime punishable by imprisonment or
death, after Lenin came to power after the October Revolution, homosexuality was decriminalized and
homosexuals were allowed to hold office in the newly formed Soviet Union. However, as anti gay
laws were enacted by Stalin, homosexuals were seen as a danger to the state and sent to prisons and
forgot about. After the glasnost, Yeltsin under pressure from the Council of Europe, legalized
homosexuality in 1993. But under Putin, homosexuals have been under fire due to a series of anti gay
propaganda laws and an increasingly homophobic Russia society. This is due to the increase of
influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, the effect the media has on the populace as controlled by
the hegemony, and the use of homosexuality as a scapegoat of Russia s problems. Although the use of
religion as a weapon against LGBTQ people is not uncommon, it is one of the primary reasons for the
current hostile attitudes towards homosexuals. During the Communist Era, the

Persuasive Essay On A Good Life
People have different images of how a good life in our consumer driven, constantly connected and the
globalized world looks like due to the discordant definition of what a good life entails. Hence, there
are sensitizing questions that we consider. First is whether people are the best judges of their own well
being. This involves subjective versus objective measures of well being. Subjective perspective
contains a self reported judgment where individuals express feeling about themselves. Whereas
objective measures of well being are based on external criteria. For example, ways of living, fashion,
choice of food and etc. The second question debates if a good life is a moment enjoyed or a life well
lived. A moment is understood as being present in the now and mindful of the surroundings. For
instance, enjoying the nature and time with their families. Whereas a life well lived is based on
different people s perspective. For example, describing each day as their first day for the rest of their
life. Lastly, is whether happiness is linked with virtue and can one be happy without being ethical.
This argues if people have to be compassionate in order for them to be happy. The latter statement
involves thinking of the study of principles that underlies human behavior. For example, realizing that
Nike is using child labor, would you still be happy to purchase their products. It would be unethical to
support child labor. However, some people believe that the pursuit of pleasure is

Individual Moralities, Social Responsibilities and...
In the essay by J.S. Mill, Of the Limits to the Authority of Society over the Individual, he claims that
No person ought to be punished for simply being drunk... In the build up to this conclusion, he offers
several explanations for his reasoning, which include individual morality and responsibility, public
interference and establishing precisely where authority over an individual beings for the society.
As an individual within a society, you become obliged to follow certain codes of conduct, regardless
of your own individual morals. To maintain a harmonious balance within a society, each person must
behave within a certain code of conduct towards the rest of the individuals and the society as a whole.
Although the code does not ask individuals to change their own morals, it does ask that they not injure
the interests or rights of others. One must also realize that their morals may differ from that of another
individual. Although they may practice their right of freedom by living according to their own morals
and beliefs, they must still attempt to live within this social code of conduct.
Furthermore, it becomes the responsibility of one s self to ensure they are respecting the benefits given
to them as a part of the society. As Mill says, Everyone who receives the protection of society owes a
return for the benefit. (16) This can be achieved in various ways, such as returning good deeds, and
acting in good faith towards the society. Unfortunately, it is often much

Olaudah Equiano s Autobiography
Olaudah Equiano s autobiography moves beyond being a personal document. It provides the reader
with important historical background about the slavery system and Guinea. In the first three chapter,
Equiano tells us a lot about his native country, early years, and his kidnapping. The people of Eboe,
where Equiano is born, are very civilized. They have their own laws and traditions. For example, the
chiefs or elders of the place usually conduct the governmental proceedings. Their laws are built on
democratic basis. They hold meeting to decide upon any dispute and punish crimes. They natives are
very cooperative and organized. They all labor and fight together from their early years. In addition,
whenever a new bridegroom want to build his house, everyone helps him and expect nothing in return.
One of the natives best traits is being pragmatic. They could make drinks, clothes, and perfumes out of
simple materials. They are not only good at manufacturing, but also trading and they even have their
own currency. Unfortunately, the natives are not perfect as Equiano tries to portray them. Even though
women and men almost wear the same clothes, which symbolizes equality, women are not considered
equal to men. When a couple marry, everything that the girls own becomes the bridegroom s property.
Similarly, if a woman cheats on her husband, she is punished severely. While it is so common to find
husbands cheating on their wives. Before moving on, it should be pointed out that in

The Redistricting And Reappointment Process
To know rather state legislatures should continue to have responsibility of the redistricting and
reappointment process, we must first know how and what it means to redistrict and reappoint. Well,
Redistricting and Gerrymandering they are basically the same. Gerrymandering is simply attempting
to find a political advantage in redistricting. Also it is very often the case that redistricting is sought
for political advantage. This takes place by constitution at least every decade in most typical
democractic systems using similar electoral systems to prevent the unsuitable distributing of
representatives to a legislative body. But there is an alteration among redistricting and

Redistricting can be used to favor certain parties; for example, districts can be drawn to include areas
with larger numbers of Democrats or Republicans, as long as the population numbers remain
consistent. Even when the population is divided equally, drawing the lines one way can reward
Democrats and punish Republicans. But, some line drawing can protect incumbents, they will face a
potent challenger, either from their own party or the opposite party. Consequently, redistricting has a
direct bearing on what matters a legislature chooses to tackle, and which to ignore (Brennen). The
People should understand how their district is drawn and whether they will have a fair chance to elect
a candidate of their choice. A good redistricting process would benefit the public and help secure a
significant representation. Rather than gathering the lawful obligation that all votes must count
equally. Many states consider drawing their districts because of cultural, geographic, social, economic,
and racial concerns. This is far deeper than a Democrat or Republican. A decent redistricting method
allows societies to give input and ask questions. This involvement is vital, because it makes the

Women in the Merchant s Tale and the Manciple s Tale
The Wife of Bath s extraordinary prologue gives the reader a dose of what is sometimes missing in
early male written literature: glimpses of female subjectivity. Women in medieval literature are often
silent and passive, to the extent that cuckolding is often seen as something one man (the adulterer)
does to another (the husband). Eve Sedgwick argues in Between Men that in many literary
representations, women are playing pieces or playing fields in struggles between male players. By
default it seems, male writers cannot help but create shallow constructions of women; heroism occurs
in male spheres of activity, while the wives and daughters make the background, and ... Show more

(ll. 1746 9)
The narrator begins with a disclaimer, saying that even her surface appearance must remain
inaccessible to those reading the tale. This disclaimer is followed by an amazingly unhelpful simile:
May is like the morrow of May. The element of cliché is not the only problem with the simile.
Especially in a literary context, the reference to the month is already contained in May s own name.
The simile becomes sadistically repetitive. In text, the word May (the name of the woman) becomes
not only the signified but the signifier; her own name, in a way, calls us to liken her to the month.
Consequently, the line likening her to the month shoves one metaphor back into itself, and then this
simile becomes not one of A=B but rather A=A or even A within A. If a simile s two parts are too
similar, then the simile ceases to be a simile, thus losing its poetic power to describe. Chaucer drives
the point home by rhyming May with may, setting up a parallel situation between his simile and his
rhyme; may cannot properly be said to rhyme with May ‹they are homophones. So in describing May
on the night of the wedding feast, Chaucer first creates an aura of mystery, then intimates that much
may be unknown about the bride, then finally gives the reader completely undescriptive lines about

  • 2. Viking Raiders Essay Beginning in about A.D. 800, many Scandinavians sailed south from their homelands to seek their fortunes. These seafaring warriors began by raiding coastal sites of the British Isles but soon grew more ambitious. During the next three centuries, they left their mark as traders, pirates and settlers on much of Britain and the European continent. These raiders became known collectively as Norsemen, or Northmen, though they are better remembered by another name: Vikings. • 4. Italian Food In The 1970s America has seen numerous waves of immigrants which brought their own culture and cuisine. With time various cuisines became very popular nationwide and not just within the original consuming communities. One of the most popular ethical foods in the United States is Italian food. It gained its popularity long time ago and since lots of Italian dishes became leaders in restaurants. Due to growing interest of general public to Italian food numerous food restaurant networks have emerged in the United States. Moreover, only one third of so called Italian food is imported from Italy. This suggests that many products are fake and many people take advantage of popularity of Italian food. Meditation Write-Up Meditation Write Up Initially, I was nervous to begin daily meditations because I had tried to meditate before and I could never truly calm my mind from the thousands of thoughts that would swirl around. However, after meditating for fifteen minutes daily for a week, I can now say that I have become more comfortable with meditation, but it was a challenging week. At many times, I felt uncomfortable sitting in silence because my thoughts would constantly distract me from trying to focus on my breathing. • 6. Price Control Essay The price ceiling is the maximum price a seller is allowed to charge for a product or service. An impact on society includes when the prices are so high of a product, that no one can buy it. A price floor is the lowest legal price a product or service can be sold at. When market price is at its lowest, it may still be too high for consumers to purchase products. Governments can intervene for any purpose, and they are the ones who set these price controls. Because consumers aren t paying as much for the product, producers will not be able to produce as much at the lower price, and consumers will demand more because the product is cheaper. The end result will be consumers not being able to buy the product since there is not enough being made. For example, the price of milk was $2 per litre, and has now been reduced to $1 per litre. This will be great for consumers as they can buy more milk for less, until it runs out. Therefore price ceilings have a good impact on consumers. For producers, price ceilings don t have as good an impact as it does on consumers. Since the consumers are paying much less money for goods and services, they simply cannot afford to make any products. It will have a harmful effect on producers, as their surplus will decrease, resulting in them not making as much product. They will not have enough money to grow lettuce, so there will be none or little lettuce harvested to be sold. This means that price ceilings have a large impact on producers, and not in a good way. If the government puts in a price ceiling, then the quantity demanded will exceed the quantity supplied, meaning that not enough goods or services will be supplied to satisfy demand. Since then the genre has evolved, even sometimes doing without elements of the supernatural on which the original horror stories where founded. Despite the emergence of natural horror, horror which incorporates elements of the supernatural still remains superior. While horror can be successful using only natural circumstances, horror that utilizes elements of the supernatural evokes a more effective response from the reader. Throughout the story pervades a sense of the unknown, of some ancient mystery which mortal man should never venture to know. The story evicts a visceral sense of horror from the reader, one of realization of what might happen if such things were ever to exist. While any sane person would never claim that a giant god from the stars will ever rise out of the ocean to destroy the world, the reader can nonetheless envision such a horrific event. The Call of Cthulu shows how effective the supernatural can be in horror. Another excellent Lovecraft story that incorporates the supernatural is Nyarlathotep. The plot centers on the arrival of Nyarlathotep, a modern day prophet who throws the world into madness. The entire basis for the story is the supernatural, the predestined end of man which comes bellowing out of the depths of antiquity. While short in length the story nevertheless manages to build a sense of dread before Lovecraft unleashes the terrible truth of Nyarlathotep s purpose upon the reader. Before its manufacturing penicillin was considered for researching purposes, but after its manufacturing during World War II, it truly became helpful for humanity because it could finally start performing within its antibiotic spectrum. • 26. The Tempest By William Shakespeare Brown s insistence that The Tempest is a play of steeped in ambivalence and contradictions is not entirely unfounded, however. Prospero himself is an extremely powerful magus whose power borders on the transcendent and divine; he is also a man obsessed with perfecting his art that, at times, can be base and wicked. He demonstrates compassion and generosity, yet his apathetic and sometimes contemptuous treatment of other characters raises questions about his moral sensibilities. Within the drama of the play, these paradoxes create a dynamic that highlights the contrast between Prospero and those who (seek to) foil him Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban characters that Brown demarcates as masterless or othered (273). While he correctly identifies such instances of doubling, Brown conflates these binaries as markers of colonial discourse, the colonizer and the colonized, and entirely elides the binary of the noble and the natural. This dichotomy, which is staunchly embedded in the Renaissance conception of natural order the great chain of being is eminent throughout the play and integral to its thematic purpose of restoration and redemption. Brown s failure to address the great chain of being in any capacity throughout his argument is indicative of his limited understanding of the historical context in which The Tempest was written and the corresponding philosophical ideology that informed Shakespeare s manifold intentions. • 27. Cultural Pluralism Sociology Robert E. Park was a huge contributor in establishing sociology in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. His theory of assimilation was analyzing a social process and social interaction. Park argued that assimilation is inevitable in a democratic and industrial society (Healey, 2017, 50). Park strongly believed that when the American society begins to modernize, ethnic and race groups would lose importance. This theory was proven to be true in the European immigrant groups across the 20th century. Due to industrialization, the nature of work in America evolved and changed and created opportunities for upward mobility for white ethnic groups (Healey, 2017, 81). A form of upward mobility was resulted in the changes in the structure of the economy and labor market. This was called structural mobility. The descendants of European immigrants became upwardly mobile not only because of their individual ambitions and efforts but also because of the changing location or jobs and the progressively greater opportunities for education available for them (Healey, 2017, 81). Pluralism can be distinguished by two different types: cultural and structural. Cultural pluralism exists when groups have not acculturated and each maintains its own identity. The groups might speak different languages, practice different religions, and have different value systems (Healey, 2017, 55). The Amish are a perfect representation of a cultural pluralism. They are separated from the dominant culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Five Paragraph Essay On Night By Elie Wiesel A cry pierces the night air. You look around in fear as you hear a woman s screams, Fire! I can see a fire! I can see a fire! (22). There is nothing there. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There was no way you could ever have known what was to come. The morning never came and you suddenly you could see the flames everywhere. No one anticipated the monstrosity that would become known as the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel certainly didn t see it coming. He was one of the many Jewish people sent to concentration camps. Ten years after the end of World War 2 Elie decided to sit down and write his memoir, entitled Night, about the time he spent there. It is a brutally honest look at the Holocaust. Throughout the book there is a repeated mantra of fire. He describes the fire and smoke with vivid detail. If you look close enough you begin to see the deeper meaning of the fire. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses the mantra of fire to explain the terror and closeness of death that the prisoners are in constant fear of during the Holocaust. ... Once Elie arrives at the camp he sees the smoke from the crematorium for the first time. The deaths of so many innocent people occured in that death factory. Everyone around him at the camp is afraid of the dreaded place, for it means certain death to all those who enter. This threat hangs over Elie and his companions at all ... Many opponents of a vegetarian diet say that meat consumption is healthful and humane, and that producing vegetables causes many of the same environmental problems as producing meat. They also argue that humans have been eating and enjoying meat for 2.3 million years. In Western culture, vegetarianism

  • 31. Religious Influence In The Aztec s Judicial System The Aztec Empire upheld a very sophisticated, potent, and harsh legal system. The judicial system they had resembles a modern one today: it was made up of multiple courts with differing levels of jurisdiction, such as trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. Moreover, citizens could appeal rulings to a higher court if they did not agree with the ruling they were given from the judge. Although the Aztecs were very religious, they preferred to be swift and empirical when it came to the law, choosing to judge a criminal without their religious beliefs interfering. This, however, did not apply to the sentences and punishments given to the criminals. Some sentences were given without their religion interfering, such as slavery and mutilation. In other cases, punishments, such as human sacrifice, were for a religious purpose. These harsh sentences and punishments helped the Aztec Empire effectively instill fear into the people, which helped maintain control. The court system was comprised of various courts with different levels of jurisdiction. These courts were the trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. • 32. Mona Lisa Analysis Essay Fieldwork #2: Media Analysis for Gender Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa Section I: Objective Description This study serves as a gender focused analysis of Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa. The original piece of artwork was painted with oil on a white poplar panel in Florence, Italy around 1503 during the latter part of Leonardo da Vinci s life. The artist was an Italian Renaissance artist who had a wide variety of interests. The woman who is believed to be depicted in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, a wife and mother of five children who married to an older man named Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanobi del Giocondo at the age of only fifteen. The words Mona Lisa often translate to the words Madam Lisa . Leonardo da Vinci s painting of Mona Lisa has a strong resemblance to the description of the Virgin Mary, which during the Renaissance period was viewed as a representation of the ideal woman. The artist achieves a sense of softness around Mona Lisa s eyes and mouth, portraying a kindness and calmness about the woman. Nevertheless, this painting was also one of the first portraits to have an imaginary background, Leonardo strategically placed this mysterious background at the woman s eye level so that the two are related to one another. The background contains a large landscape with a very long path, cold mountains towards the distance, and a very small bridge right above her shoulder on the right side of the painting. Despite her very soft look, something about Mona Lisa and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Russia and the Underlying Causes of Homophobia Russia and the Underlying Causes of Homophobia Although homophobia exists in nearly all societies, Russia has recently gained notoriety for its intolerance of homosexual behavior. In a world that is becoming more and more accepting and tolerant of homosexuality, Russia seems to be moving backward when it comes to LGBTQ rights. Understandably, Russia s tumultuous political past must be a strong contributor to today s attitudes towards homosexuality. Under the Tsars, homosexuality was a crime punishable by imprisonment or death, after Lenin came to power after the October Revolution, homosexuality was decriminalized and homosexuals were allowed to hold office in the newly formed Soviet Union. However, as anti gay laws were enacted by Stalin, homosexuals were seen as a danger to the state and sent to prisons and forgot about. After the glasnost, Yeltsin under pressure from the Council of Europe, legalized homosexuality in 1993. But under Putin, homosexuals have been under fire due to a series of anti gay propaganda laws and an increasingly homophobic Russia society. This is due to the increase of influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, the effect the media has on the populace as controlled by the hegemony, and the use of homosexuality as a scapegoat of Russia s problems. Although the use of religion as a weapon against LGBTQ people is not uncommon, it is one of the primary reasons for the current hostile attitudes towards homosexuals. • 35. Persuasive Essay On A Good Life People have different images of how a good life in our consumer driven, constantly connected and the globalized world looks like due to the discordant definition of what a good life entails. Hence, there are sensitizing questions that we consider. First is whether people are the best judges of their own well being. This involves subjective versus objective measures of well being. Subjective perspective contains a self reported judgment where individuals express feeling about themselves. Whereas objective measures of well being are based on external criteria. For example, ways of living, fashion, choice of food and etc. The second question debates if a good life is a moment enjoyed or a life well lived. A moment is understood as being present in the now and mindful of the surroundings. For instance, enjoying the nature and time with their families. Whereas a life well lived is based on different people s perspective. For example, describing each day as their first day for the rest of their life. Lastly, is whether happiness is linked with virtue and can one be happy without being ethical. This argues if people have to be compassionate in order for them to be happy. The latter statement involves thinking of the study of principles that underlies human behavior. For example, realizing that Nike is using child labor, would you still be happy to purchase their products. It would be unethical to support child labor. Mill, Of the Limits to the Authority of Society over the Individual, he claims that No person ought to be punished for simply being drunk... In the build up to this conclusion, he offers several explanations for his reasoning, which include individual morality and responsibility, public interference and establishing precisely where authority over an individual beings for the society. As an individual within a society, you become obliged to follow certain codes of conduct, regardless of your own individual morals. To maintain a harmonious balance within a society, each person must behave within a certain code of conduct towards the rest of the individuals and the society as a whole. Although the code does not ask individuals to change their own morals, it does ask that they not injure the interests or rights of others. One must also realize that their morals may differ from that of another individual. Although they may practice their right of freedom by living according to their own morals and beliefs, they must still attempt to live within this social code of conduct. Furthermore, it becomes the responsibility of one s self to ensure they are respecting the benefits given to them as a part of the society. As Mill says, Everyone who receives the protection of society owes a return for the benefit. They have their own laws and traditions. For example, the chiefs or elders of the place usually conduct the governmental proceedings. Their laws are built on democratic basis. They hold meeting to decide upon any dispute and punish crimes. They natives are very cooperative and organized. They all labor and fight together from their early years. In addition, whenever a new bridegroom want to build his house, everyone helps him and expect nothing in return. One of the natives best traits is being pragmatic. They could make drinks, clothes, and perfumes out of simple materials. They are not only good at manufacturing, but also trading and they even have their own currency. Unfortunately, the natives are not perfect as Equiano tries to portray them. Even though women and men almost wear the same clothes, which symbolizes equality, women are not considered equal to men. The Redistricting And Reappointment Process To know rather state legislatures should continue to have responsibility of the redistricting and reappointment process, we must first know how and what it means to redistrict and reappoint. Well, Redistricting and Gerrymandering they are basically the same. Gerrymandering is simply attempting to find a political advantage in redistricting. Also it is very often the case that redistricting is sought for political advantage. Redistricting can be used to favor certain parties; for example, districts can be drawn to include areas with larger numbers of Democrats or Republicans, as long as the population numbers remain consistent. Even when the population is divided equally, drawing the lines one way can reward Democrats and punish Republicans. But, some line drawing can protect incumbents, they will face a potent challenger, either from their own party or the opposite party. Consequently, redistricting has a direct bearing on what matters a legislature chooses to tackle, and which to ignore (Brennen). The People should understand how their district is drawn and whether they will have a fair chance to elect a candidate of their choice. A good redistricting process would benefit the public and help secure a significant representation. Rather than gathering the lawful obligation that all votes must count equally. Many states consider drawing their districts because of cultural, geographic, social, economic, and racial concerns. This is far deeper than a Democrat or Republican. Women in the Merchant s Tale and the Manciple s Tale The Wife of Bath s extraordinary prologue gives the reader a dose of what is sometimes missing in early male written literature: glimpses of female subjectivity. Women in medieval literature are often silent and passive, to the extent that cuckolding is often seen as something one man (the adulterer) does to another (the husband). Eve Sedgwick argues in Between Men that in many literary representations, women are playing pieces or playing fields in struggles between male players. By default it seems, male writers cannot help but create shallow constructions of women; heroism occurs in male spheres of activity, while the wives and daughters make the background, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (ll. 1746 9) The narrator begins with a disclaimer, saying that even her surface appearance must remain inaccessible to those reading the tale. This disclaimer is followed by an amazingly unhelpful simile: May is like the morrow of May. The element of cliché is not the only problem with the simile. Especially in a literary context, the reference to the month is already contained in May s own name. The simile becomes sadistically repetitive. In text, the word May (the name of the woman) becomes not only the signified but the signifier; her own name, in a way, calls us to liken her to the month. Consequently, the line likening her to the month shoves one metaphor back into itself, and then this simile becomes not one of A=B but rather A=A or even A within A. If a simile s two parts are too similar, then the simile ceases to be a simile, thus losing its poetic power to describe. Chaucer drives the point home by rhyming May with may, setting up a parallel situation between his simile and his rhyme; may cannot properly be said to rhyme with May ‹they are homophones. So in describing May on the night of the wedding feast, Chaucer first creates an aura of mystery, then intimates that much may be unknown about the bride, then finally gives the reader completely undescriptive lines about May s ...
