Australian Film Industry
Wither The Australian Film Industry?
After I moved to Australia at the hindsight of this year, I happened to make an argument to myself in
regard to the state of the Australia Film Industry. However, over the course of the year, being
established here with my studies, analyzing the employment market and meeting professionals from
the industry, it is conclusive that the Australian Film Industry is indeed facing a severe crisis from the
past two decades.
One can easily pick the selectively handful films that have proved to be excellent in the Australian
cinemas. Additionally, there is a wide segment of the Australian audience that is unaware of numerous
Australian releases from the time. I have tended to wonder why it has been 20 years ... Show more

There are major cultural and attitudinal differences within our major cities and also across the country.
No place in Australia is truly its representative. Which means that the things that are identifiably
Australian are quite limited. Dr. John s in his lectures highlighted the cultural differences quite a bit
and I completely agree with his views. The main themes that resonated in the past have in some ways
been discredited and with others yet to take their place. To a large extent the cultural language has
been lost. The consequences of internationalism and globalisation have separated the Australian
population from the national cinema market. This disturbance has provoked a change in the nature of
government funding, dominant film institutions and Australian audiences. These changes mean that
the Australian national cinema must reassess funding policies and the new sphere of public influence
to reassert itself into the Australian market and ensure growth in the

Identity And Access Management For Hdos
Identity and Access Management for HDOs
Health Delivery Organizations (HDOs) are continuously confronted with handling a large amount of
sensitive patient information. These organizations must have the capability to protect patient privacy
and the integrity of their personal information, and yet be able to share the information with clinicians
and staff that have a legal need for the information to provide due care. HDO s are also under pressure
to increase the effectiveness of their regulatory compliance processes for HIPAA, HITECH,
Meaningful Use, PCI, and others.
As HDOs expand, merge and evolve to keep up with the requirements of maintaining electronic
healthcare records (EHR) and electronic protected health information (ePHI), ... Show more content

This increase of sensitive data available online, commonly accessed through usernames and

2015, the IRTC reported that a staggering 66.7% of all records compromised in data breaches were in
the healthcare industry; in 2014, this number was only 9.7%.
....more of a challenge as we lose control of the perimeter with business going digital, mobile and into
the cloud.
The potential vulnerabilities within a Health Delivery Organizations (HDOs) are numerous. The
impact of exploitation of the can be enormous. It s not only that the information will be damaged,
stolen, or misused; the actual or implied theft of improperly protected electronic data can result in
extortion threats. The cost and distraction of a hacker s extortion demand that threatens to shut down
an entity s system or to expose confidential information can be significant. In addition to the direct
costs related to the extortion demand, a facility can have major expenses, including those for the
required notification of patients related to the real or threatened release of their identity information.
Many states require companies to notify all of their customers if a breach is even suspected. The
potential for exploitation does not stop there. Consider any of the following scenarios, note that some
do not even require access to personal information, a hacker just needs to get access:

Historical Significance Of The Magna Carta
In the early civilizations of the world there was no true law. An all powerful king would die and all the
power he possessed would be directly passed on to a younger generation of his family. This sense of
monarchy was present throughout history in ancient Egypt, China, Rome, and many other civilizations
alike. The Magna Carta, a document signed by the most powerful Barons of England and Archbishop
Stephen Langton in June of 1215, was the first ever document to solidify the restriction of power that
even a king possessed. This document was mainly created due to King John s tyrannical methods of
ruling over Britain that eventually led them into what most people considered a dark age. King John s
failures as a king included funding military ventures by extracting unreasonably high fees from nobles
who raised the rents and taxes imposed on their tenants, influencing the church elections and
confiscating the churches properties, and restricting trading privileges traditionally granted to London
s merchants and then increased their taxes. Although the Magna Carta limited the power of a king,
kings continued to abuse their power for personal benefit. Even so, the document helped shape future
societies due to an idea of there being higher law, and not just one person having the final say in all
important matters. By the 17th Century, the Magna Carta had become much more significant than it
was when made official law, and further influenced society. The Magna Carta, based on the

Mechanism of Melatonin Stimulation of Growth Hormone...
Mechanism of melatonin stimulation of growth hormone release via somatostatin inhibition
Joseph Angelo Israel Peguit

Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division
Abstract
Secretion of growth hormone is affected by two primary hormones: Growth hormone releasing
hormone and somatostatin. The former is the primary stimulant to promote growth hormone secretion
while the latter is the primary inhibitor that prevents growth hormone secretion. Many studies have
already shown that melatonin stimulates secretion of growth hormone via somatostatin inhibition but
its mechanisms remain unknown. I hypothesized that melatonin inhibits somatostatin at transcription
level through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that any regulation of melatonin on other hormones happen mostly in the SCN in the
hypothalamus. The receptors of melatonin belong to the Gi/Go type of the superfamily of G Protein
Coupled Receptors (GPCR)[8]. The G proteins are coupled to a number of effector systems
influencing the intracellular signalling. They are designated as Gi/Go type because of their
characteristic being inhibited by the presence of pertussis toxin[8].
Transduction Pathway
The effector systems coupled to the melatonin receptors include the Adenylate cyclase, phospholipase
C, L type calcium channels, and ATP sensitive K+ ion channels[8,6,33].
The inhibition of calcium influx via the L type calcium channels may be mediated by direct
inactivation by the G protein[6] and/or through induced hyperpolarization by activation of ATP
sensitive K+ channel[6]. Activation of the G proteins results to activation of ATP sensitive K+
channels. The active transport of K+ ion intracellularly results to hyperpolarization of the membrane.
The hyperpolarization inactivates the voltage sensitive L type Ca2+ channels which only opens during
membrane depolarization[8,6].
Melatonin receptor activation inhibits activity of Phospholipase C (PLC)[8]. PLC functions to catalyze
hydrolysis of phosphatidyl inositol (4,5) bisphosphate to Inositol triphosphate (IP3) and Diacyglycerol
(DAG). Inositol

Disney Fair Use
The first thing that should be done before anything else in this case, is the proper definition of fair use.
Merriam Webster s defines fair use as the following: a legal doctrine that portions of copyrighted
materials may be used without permission of the copyright owner provided the use is fair and
reasonable, does not substantially impair the value of the materials, and does not curtail the profits
reasonably expected by the owner. The U.S. Copyright office states that these are the activities that
can be claimed as fair use: criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. So
to further analyze fair use, I shall share some observations. Fair use can be claimed if it does not
substantially impair the worth of the movies used in the video, or lose any money for disney. The
strategy can also be used if it is used in the context of criticizing, reporting, or providing commentary
on something. Teaching, research, and scholarship are also forms protected by copyright.
So first we will look at if Disney s profits are harmed, let s take a look at what disney is worth: Disney
currently has about 1.61 billion shares outstanding. With a share price of around $94 per share, that
puts Disney s market capitalization at roughly $150 billion. The Motley Fool. Looking at evidence ...

Essay about The Things they Carried Symbolism
The Things They Carried: Essay Prompt Two Tim O Brien writes about both the physical objects they
carry as well as their emotional burdens. The objects that these soldiers carry serve as a symbolism for
what they are carrying in their hearts and minds. The soldiers carry items varying from pantyhose,
medicine, tanning oil, and pictures. Jimmy Cross is an inexperienced sophomore in college, he signs
up for the Reserve Officers Training Camp because his friends are doing the course. Jimmy Cross

This can be true for a lot of fictional stories, while writing this type of literature an author must have
previous background information or experiences to create a story. Tim O Brien wrote a compelling
novel that kept you in awe about whether or not the story could be a true experience or if it s just a
crazy story he devised.
O Brien casts doubt on the veracity of the story to let you experience what the war felt like for him.
When him and his fellow soldiers would sit around the campfire telling stories some where obviously
made up for entertainment while others actually were authentic. This is how you have to view the
book as like you are there with the troops listening to these war stories and deciding for yourself
whether or not you believe them. The underlying theme isn t really the vietnam war in itself, its the act
of storytelling.
One example of when the author causes us to be unsure of the truth is when he talks about the
vietnamese man he killed. Then we find out that it wasn t O Briens fault from Kiowa to leave us in an
even more confused state. He wrote this because he wanted to describe to us that even if he didn t kill
the man, it felt like he was responsible, because in a way he felt like the mysterious man was him.
This particular event increases our understanding of the story because this is what it felt like to be in
the war. You would blame yourself for the death of a fellow soldier or imagine your own self dead.

The heavy usage of gold around the frame is used to make Alexander the Great seem even more noble
than he already is. The usage of gold on the frame like device also gives this painting a more
sophisticated look. Equally important, like I touched on earlier, the position of the human figures in
this painting also play an important role in making this historical event biased. The human bodies are
clustered and below Alexander the Great s eye level to show dominance and authority. The Getty also
mentions that the text near the bottom of the painting in the cartouche translates to It is for a king to
vanquish himself which includes King Louis XIV. Other hidden symbols that reference King Louis

Similarities Between Matthew And The Gospel Of John
The Gospels are essential texts of the Christian faith as they chronical the life of Jesus Christ. And yet
they are surrounded by controversies because they seem to conflict each other. But, in the case of the
Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John, this concern is truly misplaced. Looking closer at the texts
shows that they are not entirely dissimilar. Both texts are based in tradition and their relation to Jesus.
The texts come from the same founding idea but the difference lies in their uses of tradition to convey
different messages to the audience. The Gospel of Matthew uses tradition to provide legitimacy to
Jesus and paint him as a continuation of tradition, whereas the Gospel of John alludes to traditional
ideas to show Jesus as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to Matthew, John makes this obvious from the opening verse of the gospel in which he
rewrites the creation myth from the beginning of Genesis. Where Genesis states that In the beginning
God created earth (Genesis 1:1), the Gospel of John changes the text to say that in the beginning the
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). There is no longer just
God, there is the Word, or Jesus, and the reader is forced to now think about the world in this way.
Instead of bridging the gap between the Hebrew Bible and Jesus, John chooses to changing the words
and thus change the way the faith is thought about. John rewrites tradition through Jesus and attempts
to create a change in the way the faith works. During the crucifixion of Jesus, John continues to allude
to the Jewish tradition with subtle changes to past ideas. When on the cross, a thirsty Jesus is given a
drink from a sponge full of vinegar on a hyssop (John 19:29). The reed of hyssop, though it could not
have actually held a sponge, it s meant to remind the audience of the tradition of using hyssop to
spread blood on your door during Passover. And after his death, John refers to the fulfillment of
prophecy in 19:36, where scripture said that not a bone of him shall be broken. Subsequently, Jesus is
pierced by the spear of a soldier and there came out blood and water (John 19:34). All of these
examples allude to the tradition of Passover. These references, however, were originally about the
sacrificial lamb to be slaughtered for use on the sacred holiday. John takes this traditional idea and
changes it, using the idea in reference to Jesus. Both the cleansing blood and water that fall from Jesus
and the bones that are not be broken are meant to liken Jesus to the sacrificial lamb that saves the
Jews. John leads the audience to believe that it is no

SMC and PI Disturbance Compensation Techniques By using Nonlinear Speed Control for PMSM

ABSTRACT: In order to optimize the speed control performance of the permanent magnet
synchronous motor (PMSM) system with different disturbances and uncertainties,. In further improve
the disturbance rejection performance of SMC method, extended sliding mode disturbance observer
(ESMDO) is proposed, and the estimated system disturbance is considered as the feed forward
compensation part to compensate sliding mode speed controller. Thus, a composite control method
combining an SMC part and a feed forward compensation part based on ESMDO, called
SMC+ESMDO method, is developed. First, a sliding mode control method based on one novel sliding

In these nonlinear control methods, SMC method is well known for its invariant proper ties to certain
internal parameter variations and external disturbances, which can guarantee perfect tracking
performance de spite parameters or model uncertainties. In a novel exponential reaching law was
presented to design the speed and current integrated controller. To suppress chattering problem,
system variable was used in this reaching law.1 2 However, in the aforementioned reaching laws, the
discontinuous gain rapidly decreases because of variation of the functions of the sliding surface, thus
reducing the robustness of the controller near the sliding surface and also increasing the reaching time.
3 4In order to solve the aforementioned problems, a novel reaching law, which is based on the choice
of an exponential term that adapts to the variations of the sliding mode surface and system states, is
proposed in this paper. This reaching law is able to deal with the chattering/reaching time dilemma.
Based on this reaching law, a sliding mode speed controller of PMSM is developed.

Essay on Why Hybrid Cars Should Not Be Purchased
As the gas price is rising up to 140 cents per litre in Canada, many people switch their vehicle to
gasoline electric hybrid car to gain savings from the better fuel efficiency. Many potential consumers
for hybrid vehicle and hybrid vehicle owners think that the hybrid system is worth the extra penny due
to better fuel economy. However, the realistic is that it has higher maintenance despite of its

As a result, consumer is forced to pay for the battery pack which costs around $4,000 from their

Many people buy hybrid cars because they have been told that hybrids are much more eco friendly
than any other vehicles out on the market and they feel proud for supporting the Mother Nature.
Surprisingly, it is a fact that a recent report announced that the Toyota Prius has a higher life time
energy cost than Hummer H1 SUV (kentlaw.edu). It also states, There are, however, environmental
costs to mining and smelting (in Canada) 1,000 tons a year of zinc for the battery powered second

other words, the hybrids emit less carbon dioxide and other gases but it releases far more energies and
toxic gases into atmosphere at production and disposal stage.
In addition, consumer must be aware that there are better alternatives to hybrids on market. Thanks to
advancing technology, many petro powered and diesel powered vehicle get similar EPA fuel economy

Analysis Of As I Lay Dying
Faulkner s Description of Dewey Dell in As I Lay Dying William Faulkner s phrasing, point of view,
and grammar in his polyphonic novel, As I Lay Dying, strategically employs the miserably pessimistic
yet juvenile voice of Dewey Dell to characterize her as the novel s naïve victim. The only surviving
female in the Bundren family, Faulkner presents the hardships that Dewey Dell must endure. In
addition, as an uneducated girl with no guidance, Dewey Dell experiences an uncertainty in many
issues that arise in her life.
Dewey Dell s diction in As I Lay Dying functions to unravel the novel s deeper themes of suffering
and selfishness. Burdened with an illegitimate pregnancy after having sex with Lafe, Dewey Dell
grieves alone as she is isolated in her guilt and shame. She views the world as a sickening visceral pile
of guts, implying that death is her only relief, furthering the theme of mortality. It is interesting that
Dewey Dell also describes her pregnancy as I am a little tub of guts and if there is not any room for
anything else important in a big tub of guts, how can it be room in a little tub of guts. (Faulkner 58).
Which implies the meaning of birth as a miserable duty, rather than a joyful need. As the novel
progresses, Dewey Dell works on past New Hope three miles. That s what they mean by the womb of
time: the agony and the despair of spreading bones, the hard girdle in which lie the outraged entrails of
events. (Faulkner 121). In the efforts to bury Addie in

Essay On The Great Gatsby As A Tragic Hero
Sam Winchester, Elena Gilbert, Walter White, Sirus Black, Peta Mellark, Jean Valjean, and Jay
Gatsby, what do all these characters have in common? They are all tragic heroes. A tragic hero is a
character that has a fatal flaw, or tragic flaw, that keeps them from perfection. From HBO shows to
classic literature, writers have been breaking hearts with tragic heroes for years! Even the title tragic
hero sounds melodramatic. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero should have certain traits. He decided
that they should be pitied, they should disrespect the natural order, reverse their fate, have a tragic
flaw, make an important discovery, and be put in an unavoidable situation (Meirow). In the book, The
Great Gatsby, while Jay Gatsby is frantically searching for the American Dream, he displays each of
the previous traits. His tragic flaw ends up killing him and affecting those close to him.

Arthur meets Merlin who then decides to accompany him. Some important themes that are seen in this

completely predetermined, there is no ways to change the outcome of one s life. The idea that life is
based solely on fate will be seen through battles, tools given to ensure survival, Merlin s powerful

Moreover, Merlin also knows of the deed that Arthur has done and decides to tell him you have lain by
your sister and on her you have conceived a child that shall destroy you and all the knights of your
realm (26). This causes Arthur to be aware that his fate is to die at the ends of Mordred. This shows
that no matter the choices Arthur will make, his fate will not change. Arthur knows Modred will kill
him, this is the reason Arthur decides to follow Merlin s advice and to have all children born on May
day put in a ship and sent out to sea (33). To send out all of these children is to make sure that the son
he conceived will not be his demise. Mordred survives May day which proves that Arthur s fate is
predetermined no matter the course he chooses. To conclude, Malory, in the chapter How Mordred
was Born and Arthur Learned of His Parentage , shows that Arthur s fate is already made for him; that
none of the choices he makes will change how his life is supposed to end. Throughout this prose
romance, Merlin is there to make sure that Arthur will survive. How Merlin

Change, Innovation, And Sustainability
Change, innovation, and sustainability are common terms in the current global economy.
Organizations need to keep the pace or lead the way to maintain its relevancy in the market and keep
the competition at bay. Thus sustainability is the key to leading by innovation and change, to improve
products and services, in order to remain at the top. Organizations achieve sustainability when they
have the ability to develop, innovate, and implement changes that would lead to long term success
(Froschheiser, 2014). For organizations to implement and commit to the constant change environment,
or organic evolution of change, all stakeholders need to be willing and informed participants.
Organic Evolution of Change
Creating an organizational mentality of change, is the core of a sustainable organization (Christensen,
2014). Establishments have been faced with the necessity to transition from the traditional approach of
stability, which ruled previous to the advancement in technology and globalization, or risk irrelevancy
or even destruction (Freytag Hollsen, 2010). Change is provoke by need. Leadership must identify
organizational, stakeholder, and market needs to identify reasons for change (Bisoux, 2015, Mento, et
al, 2002, Simonds, 2013, Todd, et al, 2014, Stanleigh, 2013, Perlman Leppert, 2013). Identifying
organizational strengths and weaknesses would ensure that the resources needed for the culture of
change are available (Peck, et al, n.d.). Once leaders have align

Technology Should Not Be Taught

will say yes, it should still be taught. Others, will say no due to how much our technology has grown,
and which continues to grow by the day, But I strongly believe it should still be an option for those
who would like to, to be able to learn it. It may not be required or even necessary anymore, But some

you do leave your board outside for prolonged periods of time you could end up damaging its
structural integrity. Buy a board bag to keep your surfboard safe while you travel to and from the
beach. It s also a good idea to dry your board off before putting it in its bag. Putting your surfboard in
soaking wet will eventually lead to delamination. Always use a leash when surfing near rocky breaks.

Lovers Of Paradiso In Dante Inferno
Throughout the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri explores the idea of passion by writing stories of two
lovers. These two lovers have similar experiences, yet, they have opposite interpretations of what they
experience. Dante suggests that individuals cause their own fates by interpreting their experiences
vastly differently. In this case, these two lovers interpret their lust/passion pretty differently, when they
were alive, and this led one couple to end up in Hell and be punished, while the other couple come
together in Heaven, at a divine level. In other words, Dante compares the lovers of Inferno and the
lovers of Paradiso. Lovers of Inferno swept up by passion, lack remorse and lack respect for the God.
In contrast, lovers of Paradiso interpret ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking at Inferno 5, Dante grants the agency to Francesca, allowing her to tell her own story. Giving
her the freedom to talk indicates that Dante feels sympathy for her and is curious what it feels to
punished because of lust, since he has also thought of it many time. However, on the other hand, after
Francesca is finished telling her story, Dante faints with pity. Therefore, even though he feels
sympathy towards Francesca (since Dante has similar feelings toward another woman than his wife),
he is simultaneously aware that even his sympathy might be bad. Thus, he feels so overwhelmed that
he faints with pity. Dante says to Francesca, what you suffer here melts me to tears of pity and pain.
Tear of pity and pain; pain in these words means empathy, and understanding of her, while pity refers
to the judgmental and non appropriate state of her action by Dante. Dante explicitly says that he is
overwhelmed by her confession and pride of her action that he faints. Moreover, Francesca and Paolo
committed the sin of adultery and inferno 5 has 147 lines. Yet, the word adultery never appear in none
of these lines. This is quite interesting and makes the reader think whether there is an underlying cause
that lead the sinners to end up on this circle of Hell. This suggests that Dante expects his readers to
realize that she is actually in Hell because of not the adultery action itself, but because of her

The Effects of MTV on American Culture Essay
MTV, formally known as Music Television, is one of the most viewed networks on television today.
Roughly thirty three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than just one
way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the most up to
date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified lifestyles, and
defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so called idolized network has not always
been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTV through the creation of the network,
the transformation from simply just music television to inappropriate reality shows, and the promotion
of inappropriate content. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reality shows can be defined as a catch all category that includes a wide range of entertainment
programs about real people. The MTV network executives quickly realized how fast the world around
them was changing; so on May 21, 1992, seven random strangers were picked to star on the show The
Real World. This show modernized MTV by connecting viewers to the world and current culture
around them. It also demonstrated that the network was not just about airing the hottest music videos
of the year. Even today, The Real World is stil the forerunner of the American reality show genre. The
reality genre has mass appeal. Because of this, MTV started to create more reality based shows. As
more reality shows were created, the MTV network made the executive decision to create another
network channel to further the demands of viewers. So, they created M2, formally known today as
MTV2.
As MTV started adding reality shows, the air time for music videos began to decrease incrementally.
The original purpose for M2 was to broadcast the most recent music videos of the decade through
commercial free air time both on television and online streaming. This would hopefully bring in more
viewers because of the lack of commercial interruptions. However, because M2 was restricted to less
widely available digital cable and satellite television, which limited its audience reach to around 12
million homes by 2000. As time moved on, people wanted more from

rich and powerful nations like the U.S to extend economic and cultural domination over poorer ones.
Brie Poor countries have taken enormous loans from wealthy countries in order to stay afloat. Paying
off the compound interest from this debt prevents them from investing resources into their own
country. For example, between 1970 and 2002, the continent of Africa received $540 billion in loans
from wealthy nations through the World Bank and IMF. African countries have paid back $550 billion

Advantages And Differences Between Two Career And...
There are advantages and disadvantages do both two career and one career families. A two career
house requires each parent holding a substantial, full time job. Both are out of the house for a good
part of the day, which would call for child care if they have kids who are too young to stay at home
alone. Having a two career family takes longer for parents to build a bond with their child. A one
career family involves one parent working and the other at homing taking care of the children. This
keeps the children less unsatisfied. Looking at it this way makes one think that a one career family
would be better for a family.
There are many things that can differ when talking about a two career and a one career family. One is
time a parent and a child spend together. Things that are very important when raising a child is time
spent with the child and giving the child free time for entertaining activities. This is very easy to
accomplish in a one career household due to the one stay at home parent. With this, the child lives a
more diverse life, which is what every parent wants in their kid. The child that is attended to at a
young age will often be lead to treating their own children the same way.

with a stay at home parent can lead to a beneficial effect on a child s future. As a child grows up, they
start to realize all the lessons they have been taught as a kid and begin to utilize them to help them

The Energy Information Administration ( 2016 )
In 2015 the United States produced an average of 9.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, a rate of
production not seen in over 45 years (EIA, 2015). In 2008 production averaged 5 million barrels a day.
This drastic increase in production can be attributable, in part, to advances in hydraulic fracturing.
According to the Energy Information Administration (2016) this controversial drilling technology has
been in use for over 6 decades, but has otherwise contributed relatively little to total crude oil output.
In 2000 23,000 hydraulic fractured wells produced 102,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2% of the total
national output. In 2015 there were 300,000 hydraulically fractured wells producing 4.3 million
barrels of oil a day, a 4,000% increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A 2008 assessment by the United States Geological Survey (2013) of Bakken shale formation
determined that an estimated 3.65 billion barrels of oil were technically recoverable. A subsequent
reassessment in 2013 found the formation contained 7.4 billion barrels of undiscovered and
technically recoverable oil reserves (USGS, 2013). Nevertheless, many in the shale production
industry believe the Bakken formation may contain over 20 billion barrels of technically recoverable
oil (SAFE, 2012).
What is Hydraulic Fracturing? Certain geological formations may contain deposits of natural gas and
petroleum; however, these formations generally have extremely low permeability (Earthworks (EW),
2016). Hydraulic fracturing is process that increases the permeability of these rock formations, making
the fossil fuels contained within more extractable (EW, 2016). Although hydraulic fracturing has been
in use for over 60 years, only recently has it gained widespread use. Fracking begins by drilling a well
and inserting a steel pipe known as a casing. The casing contains perforations within a target zone
where there is assumed to be natural gas or oil supplies (EW, 2016). Once the casing is in position
fracturing fluid is pumped into the casing, and injected into the well through the perforations at the
target zone (EW, 2016). The rock formation absorbs the fluid until it becomes saturated, at which
point pressure begins to build in the well, causing

Analysis Of The Book Gladwell
Maddy Rigby
Smith
AP English III
30 November 2014
In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when
an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book,
he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected.
In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to
act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the
small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more
information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well
informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in
the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a
detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers
that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study.
After their extensive studying, they were sure in their deduction, but another group came into the
picture soon after and looked at it or blinked and declared it a fake and a forgery and ended up being
right. Gladwell provides a series of questions following his anecdote is overanalyzing incorrect? Does
blinking always provide the correct

Disadvantages in theatre arts are unlikely to occur because there will be less possibility that an actor or
a play write will commit mistake in or during a play. Some of the possible disadvantages is the lack of
time, this is a possible disadvantage a theatre can have because sometimes during practice they spend
a lot of time in their other stuffs to do, so they have limited time to practice the play. Sometimes the
play is given within a few numbers of weeks before the play so they will rush the rehearsals and often
miss the polishing part, so they are prone to make mistakes during the play. Lot of theatre arts actors,

The Ideological Origins Of The American Revolution Essay
Bailyn, Bernard. The Ideological Origins of the American Revolutions. Cambridge: The Belknap
Press of Harvard University Press, 1992. Thesis: In The Ideological Origins of the American
Revolution, Bernard Bailyn argues that the ideology of the American Revolution was inspired by a
variety of source such as enlightenment writers, past revolutions, and political corruption in the
homeland of England. Themes: A theme that is prominent throughout the text in many forms is liberty.
One of the causes of revolutionary thought is in America is the thought that liberty was being
threatened in England, and therefore would spread to America. Liberty became a dream for some in
America once independence from England was obtained, as slavery thrived here in irony. Liberty
branched out past the physical sphere as well as Freedom of Religion became based on the idea of
religion being the liberty of conscious (263). Another theme of the text is fear . Fear of loss of liberty
in their homeland drove many colonists to begin thinking in Revolutionary terms, as previously
mentioned. There was also fear on the English side of an American rebellion. Fear is what drove
England to force a standing British Army on the Americans. These fears would not subside and would
eventually lead to war as neither side would back down. Evidentiary Base: One of the biggest primary
sources that Bailyn utilizes is pamphlets from the pre Revolutionary Revolutionary era in America.

The region was later called by the Spaniards as Ylocos or Ilocos and its people Ilocanos . The Ilocos
Region was already a thriving, fairly advanced cluster of towns and settlements familiar to Chinese,
Japanese and Malay traders when the Spaniard explorer Don Juan de Salcedo and members of his
expedition arrived in Vigan on June 13, 1572. Forthwith, they made Cabigbigaan (Bigan), the heart of
the Ylokos settlement their headquarters which Salcedo called Villa Fernandina and which eventually
gained fame as the Intramuros of Ilocandia . Salcedo declared the whole Northern Luzon as an
encomienda. Subsequently, he became the encomendero of Vigan and Lieutenant Governor of the
Ylokos until his death in July 1574. Augustinian missionaries joined the military forces in conquering
the region through evangelization. They established parishes and built churches that still stand today.
Three centuries later, Vigan became the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. A royal decree of

Why Is Chris Brown Unethical
Chris Brown who pleaded guilty to felony assault in 2009 in a case involving his ex, Rihanna, has
been accused once again of hitting a woman.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a case, relating to an altercation
at the Palms Casino Resort that involves Chris Brown.
Apparently, the singer has been accused of a woman of taking her cellphone and hitting her after she
allegedly tried to take a snap shot with him on Saturday morning. According to USA Today, a crime
report has been taken for misdemeanor theft and misdemeanor battery listing Mr. Brown as a suspect.
The alleged victim appeared to have minor injuries sustained as a result of a battery.

The 2016 Presidential Election Cycle
To sum up the 2016 presidential election cycle in one word: anomalous. Unconventional candidates
and unprecedented campaign strategies made for one of the zaniest election years to date. And yet, this
election was not free from the traditional problems regarding voter turnout, which has historically had
a tremendous impact on the results of elections; whichever demographics turn out or fail to on that
fateful Tuesday will determine the winners and the losers. Logically, then, the federal government
should want to give as many people as possible the chance to get to the polls. However, this is simply
not the case. The American Election day falls on a work day, unlike that of many global democratic
counterparts. As such, work obligations frequently prevent a large proportion of Americans from
casting their ballots, thereby potentially skewing the election results, and acting as a form of voter
suppression. Making election day a holiday would prove to be entirely too costly to the economy;
instead, election day should simply fall on a weekend day. This would give more Americans the
opportunity to exercise their democratic rights and therefore result in a more accurate reflection of the
desires of the American people. The first Tuesday following the first Monday of November may seem
like a rather arbitrary date to vote. However, Congress had good reason to declare this date as election
day in 1845. In order to accommodate as many Americans as possible, most of whom lived in

The Acknowledging Language
Acknowledging Language The Turing test is, at bottom, about the act of communications (Christian),
writes Brian Christian in a 2011 issue of The Atlantic. He titled his article: Man vs Machine. First
introduced by Alan Turing in 1957 as the Imitation Game, the Turing test has since grown in fame and
controversy. However, the Turing test is not fundamentally about knocking humanity off its pedestal
of intelligence; it is actually an observation about our human ability to communicate about
intelligence to each other. While language is not sufficient proof of intelligence, communication is
fundamental to how people acknowledge each other as intelligent beings. Turing began by proposing
the question, Can machines think? (Turing 433). However, instead of answering this question directly,
he remade the problem into the form of a test, one that he called, the imitation game (Turing 433).
Turing s game was played with three people, a man (A), a woman (B), and an interrogator (C) who
may be of either sex where A pretends to be B and B pretends to be A in individual conversations with
C (Turing 433). Then, as a substitute for the original question, Turing suggests that we ask, What will
happen when a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As explicitly stated by Turing, the test is meant to be a substitution for the question. When talking
about the implications of passing the test, he states that these questions replace our original question of
Can machines think? (Turing 434). There is no suggestion that passing the Turing test has any answers
for the original question. In fact, Turing found the question of about machine thinking too meaningless
to deserve discussion (Turing 442), pointing out that the muddled and varying definitions of the words
machine and thinking would confound the question and constrict the answer to be sought in a
statistical survey such as a Gallup poll (Turing

Acidic Collagen Lab Report
Acidic collagen type I (CosmoBio) at 5 mg/mL concentration and pH 3 was used. Specified volumes
of collagen solution were dispensed into plastic molds maintained at 4°C. In a closed chamber,
ammonium hydroxide maintained at 25°C was allowed to interact with degassed collagen solution.
Collagen was exposed to ammonia vapors in desiccation chamber at room temperature for 3 min, 30
min and 2 h. Collagen gels were then removed from ammonia chamber and incubated in 5°C
vitrification chamber for 90 minutes, followed by a 30 minute incubation (gelation) at 37°C. Samples
were vitrified in a 5°C vitrification chamber overnight followed by a 37 °C and 40% RH for 3 days.
The biomaterials were then rehydrated in 20 mM HEPES for 24 hours.

Historical Cost and Fair Value
Abstract
This paper is written for the accounting theory course as a course project.
This paper discusses the differences between the historical cost accounting approach and the fair value
accounting approach. The discussion will focus on the debate on using which accounting approach.
We begin by stating the definitions of both concepts and discussing them thoroughly, then we state the
main advantages of the two approaches followed by comparison between them.
The last section of this paper discusses the disadvantages of each approach, including the main
criticism points against them.
In the end, we draw a conclusion on the best approach to be used in the Accounting profession based
on the previous discussion.

When fair values are estimated using unadjusted or adjusted market prices, they are referred to as
mark to market values. If market prices for the same or similar positions are not available, then firms
must estimate fair values using valuation models. FAS 157 generally requires these models to be
applied using observable market inputs (such as interest rates and yield curves that are observable at
commonly quoted intervals) when they are available and unobservable firm supplied inputs (such as
expected cash flows developed using the firm s own data) otherwise. When fair values are estimated
using valuation models, they are referred to as mark to model values.
Advantages of Historical Cost
Supporters of Historical Cost Accounting argue that this method has several advantages that make it
popular. Some advantages are discussed below. * Historical cost is based on actual, not merely
possible, transactions. It is the acquisition price of the assets. The managers only have to record all the
assets and liabilities at their acquisition price. Hence they are measured and reported objectively.
Historical cost is therefore basically verifiable. Thus, this minimizes the risk of manipulation of
figures by the managers. * Historical cost has survived the test of time. Most users of accounting data
believe that accounting income is useful and that it constitutes a determinant of the practices and
thought patterns of decision makers. * Historical cost is an easier

Writing Challenges In Overcoming A Fear Of Writing
You want a question that brings the reader inside! You want a question to excite the readers, and pull
them inwards, so they can connect to the story when you re writing! When you are writing, you must
pull the reader in! They must know what s next!
However big or small, everyone has experienced challenges in life. A long time ago, a friend of mine
once told me that to overcome a challenge; you need to embrace the problem instead of rejecting it.
Now I realize what she was trying to say. When you have a problem, don t run away from it, because
then you will never learn how to rise above it. This is especially true in overcoming a fear of writing.
Overcoming a fear of writing is hard if it starts in kindergarten. I had the most beautiful handwriting in
class. I had received many complements from my teachers for the writing workbook assignments. But
I really never liked to write. I did not like writing at all! I had tried by best to be happy but it did not
work well. When I wrote, I thought moodily, this is boring. When I wrote, I felt angry because I
couldn t spell all the words right. I did not know what to say or write down, and this caused me more
frustration. After writing, my hands would feel tired. There was no happiness in writing for me, so
decided to just give up.
Whenever I was forced to write for my portfolios by hand, I would always complain, trying to wiggle
myself out of it. I would do preposterous things: I would whine, be very angry, frustrated,

Explain The Three Rites Of Passage
1. The three main rites of passage (Lenkeit 2012: 11) are puberty, childhood, and death. As people go
through this arc of life social positions change and we are put into certain parts in life. This because
life changes and people go through bodily and physical change throughout life. Rites of passage
allows an individual to participate but there is also a group to go with that person in which are close to
the individual. This means anything that happen to there one friend and they die or get hurt, it effects
them. For example, cultures have types of rituals (Lenkeit 2012: 11) where there is a celebration of
life and when life ends we have a ceremony for the death of the person who meant something to us. It
s a way of coming to peace and honoring them.
2. Supernatural belief (Lenkeit 2012: 11) is defined as the belief that transcends the observable,
natural world. So, this has to do with religion and what we get out of it. Supernatural forces (Lenkeit
2012:11) are the unseen powers that one possesses. These forces go against nature and beyond ...

Supernatural beings (Lenkeit 2012: 11) are those such as God s and Goddesses, Souls, Ghosts,
Tricksters, and witches. Ghosts for example, are supernatural beings for the most part. They have
abilities that can go beyond us. For all we know they are dwelling in the world to finish something and
were not ready to leave, at least this is what society says. There have been multiple encounters that
people have experienced. But, there are also ways to fool others as well into thinking something is
supernatural. Magic (Lenkeit 2012: 11) for example, is a technique to manipulate supernatural forces
and beings. Which leads us to another example of a supernatural being, witches. The Salem witch
trials is one of the most remembered events in time. Women were accused for using witchcraft , or,
magic. For practicing it they were killed and cast out by people. These accusations from people were
probably false and people

Why Is Goblin Market Still Relevant Today
The Continuing Trend of Sin in Modern Film influenced by Goblin Market
Tyler Perry s Temptation:Confessions of a Marriage Counselor is a film based on sin and shows how
sin is capable of ruining lives. The very title of the movie, explores some biblical references such as
temptation leading into sin. The main character Judith is a woman that finds herself in a very tempting
situation at work. A bachelor, who is looking for love finds interest in her although she is married. He
persuades her with gifts, and expensive things in life that she could only imagine. Judith falls deeper
and deeper into her affair that she ends up losing herself and falls to drugs and leaves her husband. In
Goblin Market, the same reference is made a woman falling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Julie Flygare, in her essay intertwining themes in Goblin Market she states that: Rossetti
fills Goblin s Market with subject matter and themes that has strong religious associations. There is an
important theme of temptation similar to Eve s temptation in the Old Testament. Laura is slyly enticed
to eat forbidden fruit, which predictably results in great pain and her lose of innocence (Flygare).
Temptation relays the story of woman as falling for the forbidden fruit, which put the world in chaos.
Goblin Market can be seen as a hint to Eve eating the forbidden fruit and wrecking humanity. As in
Temptation that same dynamic is seen, the woman gets curious and is lured away from good through
the lusting of something else, which evidently was the bachelor. Yes, many scholars focus on the
feminist aspect of the poem, but the allusion to Eve in the garden of Eden is much more prevalent.
Although, Temptation didn t involve fruit, it did however include an aspect that was tempting such as
riches, and treasures. It s almost like an individual selling their soul just to get what they want. The sin
aspect is definitely portrayed in this modern film, it stills hold that same meaning as to what the poem
Goblin Market is trying to denote, which is that sin is everywhere. Plus the idea of women being the
main ones involved with sin. Again in the film it made Judith be looked upon as weak, and unable to

Dances With Wolves Essay
Dances With Wolves
No matter how you choose to categorize human beings, whether by race or religion, nationality or
gender, the resultant categories will display at least one immutable constant. Each group, no matter
how diverse their beliefs or how dissimilar their behaviors, will contain men of honest and peaceful
natures as well as men of divisive and violent natures. In the film Dances With Wolves, we are
exposed to two distinct categories of people inhabiting post civil war America, the white man and the
Native American. We, most likely, begin the movie with defined ideas as to which group contains
honest, peaceful men and which group contains violent and savage men. We are, however, exposed to
behaviors which are in opposition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But, compassionate, thinking white men are definitely in the minority in this film.
When John begins his Westward move, the crude, maniacal white man makes his reappearance. The
officer who gives John the information about getting to his new post appears to be downright insane
and apparently kills himself. The guide who accompanies John to his post is also no prize. John refers
to him as the foulest man alive (Dances with Wolves). This constant exposure to the violent and crude
men who make up the white race is an effective first step in shifting our sympathies. We want to
distance ourselves from these shameful characters. We don t want to identify with them.
Our first exposure to Indians is a mere suggestion of the expected stereotype. We are shown a skeleton
on the ground with an arrow stuck through it. So far so good. We are accustomed to that image.
Dunbar s guide states that Indians are nothin but thieves and beggars and that you only want to see
them when they are dead (Dances with Wolves). He, of course, is such an exemplary man that it s not
ironic at all to hear him degrading someone else.
From the beginning of the film we are given hints that Dunbar is not like his fellow ugly Americans.
When John and his guide arrive at the deserted Fort, the guide is in a hurry to be away. He is nervous
and uncomfortable and thinks nothing of leaving without accomplishing what he was sent to do.

  • 2. Australian Film Industry Wither The Australian Film Industry? After I moved to Australia at the hindsight of this year, I happened to make an argument to myself in regard to the state of the Australia Film Industry. However, over the course of the year, being established here with my studies, analyzing the employment market and meeting professionals from the industry, it is conclusive that the Australian Film Industry is indeed facing a severe crisis from the past two decades. One can easily pick the selectively handful films that have proved to be excellent in the Australian cinemas. Additionally, there is a wide segment of the Australian audience that is unaware of numerous Australian releases from the time. I have tended to wonder why it has been 20 years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are major cultural and attitudinal differences within our major cities and also across the country. No place in Australia is truly its representative. Which means that the things that are identifiably Australian are quite limited. Dr. John s in his lectures highlighted the cultural differences quite a bit and I completely agree with his views. The main themes that resonated in the past have in some ways been discredited and with others yet to take their place. To a large extent the cultural language has been lost. The consequences of internationalism and globalisation have separated the Australian population from the national cinema market. This disturbance has provoked a change in the nature of government funding, dominant film institutions and Australian audiences. These changes mean that the Australian national cinema must reassess funding policies and the new sphere of public influence to reassert itself into the Australian market and ensure growth in the ... Identity And Access Management For Hdos Identity and Access Management for HDOs Health Delivery Organizations (HDOs) are continuously confronted with handling a large amount of sensitive patient information. These organizations must have the capability to protect patient privacy and the integrity of their personal information, and yet be able to share the information with clinicians and staff that have a legal need for the information to provide due care. HDO s are also under pressure to increase the effectiveness of their regulatory compliance processes for HIPAA, HITECH, Meaningful Use, PCI, and others. The potential vulnerabilities within a Health Delivery Organizations (HDOs) are numerous. The impact of exploitation of the can be enormous. It s not only that the information will be damaged, stolen, or misused; the actual or implied theft of improperly protected electronic data can result in extortion threats. The cost and distraction of a hacker s extortion demand that threatens to shut down an entity s system or to expose confidential information can be significant. In addition to the direct costs related to the extortion demand, a facility can have major expenses, including those for the required notification of patients related to the real or threatened release of their identity information. Many states require companies to notify all of their customers if a breach is even suspected. The potential for exploitation does not stop there. • 4. Historical Significance Of The Magna Carta In the early civilizations of the world there was no true law. An all powerful king would die and all the power he possessed would be directly passed on to a younger generation of his family. This sense of monarchy was present throughout history in ancient Egypt, China, Rome, and many other civilizations alike. The Magna Carta, a document signed by the most powerful Barons of England and Archbishop Stephen Langton in June of 1215, was the first ever document to solidify the restriction of power that even a king possessed. This document was mainly created due to King John s tyrannical methods of ruling over Britain that eventually led them into what most people considered a dark age. King John s failures as a king included funding military ventures by extracting unreasonably high fees from nobles who raised the rents and taxes imposed on their tenants, influencing the church elections and confiscating the churches properties, and restricting trading privileges traditionally granted to London s merchants and then increased their taxes. Although the Magna Carta limited the power of a king, kings continued to abuse their power for personal benefit. Even so, the document helped shape future societies due to an idea of there being higher law, and not just one person having the final say in all important matters. By the 17th Century, the Magna Carta had become much more significant than it was when made official law, and further influenced society. The Magna Carta, based on the ... Mechanism of melatonin stimulation of growth hormone release via somatostatin inhibition Joseph Angelo Israel Peguit University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division Abstract Secretion of growth hormone is affected by two primary hormones: Growth hormone releasing hormone and somatostatin. The former is the primary stimulant to promote growth hormone secretion while the latter is the primary inhibitor that prevents growth hormone secretion. Many studies have already shown that melatonin stimulates secretion of growth hormone via somatostatin inhibition but its mechanisms remain unknown. I hypothesized that melatonin inhibits somatostatin at transcription level through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that any regulation of melatonin on other hormones happen mostly in the SCN in the hypothalamus. The receptors of melatonin belong to the Gi/Go type of the superfamily of G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCR)[8]. The G proteins are coupled to a number of effector systems influencing the intracellular signalling. They are designated as Gi/Go type because of their characteristic being inhibited by the presence of pertussis toxin[8]. Transduction Pathway The effector systems coupled to the melatonin receptors include the Adenylate cyclase, phospholipase C, L type calcium channels, and ATP sensitive K+ ion channels[8,6,33]. The inhibition of calcium influx via the L type calcium channels may be mediated by direct inactivation by the G protein[6] and/or through induced hyperpolarization by activation of ATP sensitive K+ channel[6]. Activation of the G proteins results to activation of ATP sensitive K+ channels. The active transport of K+ ion intracellularly results to hyperpolarization of the membrane. The hyperpolarization inactivates the voltage sensitive L type Ca2+ channels which only opens during membrane depolarization[8,6]. Melatonin receptor activation inhibits activity of Phospholipase C (PLC)[8]. PLC functions to catalyze hydrolysis of phosphatidyl inositol (4,5) bisphosphate to Inositol triphosphate (IP3) and Diacyglycerol (DAG). Inositol ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Disney Fair Use The first thing that should be done before anything else in this case, is the proper definition of fair use. Merriam Webster s defines fair use as the following: a legal doctrine that portions of copyrighted materials may be used without permission of the copyright owner provided the use is fair and reasonable, does not substantially impair the value of the materials, and does not curtail the profits reasonably expected by the owner. The U.S. Copyright office states that these are the activities that can be claimed as fair use: criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. So to further analyze fair use, I shall share some observations. Fair use can be claimed if it does not substantially impair the worth of the movies used in the video, or lose any money for disney. The strategy can also be used if it is used in the context of criticizing, reporting, or providing commentary on something. Teaching, research, and scholarship are also forms protected by copyright. So first we will look at if Disney s profits are harmed, let s take a look at what disney is worth: Disney currently has about 1.61 billion shares outstanding. Tim O Brien wrote a compelling novel that kept you in awe about whether or not the story could be a true experience or if it s just a crazy story he devised. O Brien casts doubt on the veracity of the story to let you experience what the war felt like for him. When him and his fellow soldiers would sit around the campfire telling stories some where obviously made up for entertainment while others actually were authentic. This is how you have to view the book as like you are there with the troops listening to these war stories and deciding for yourself whether or not you believe them. The underlying theme isn t really the vietnam war in itself, its the act of storytelling. One example of when the author causes us to be unsure of the truth is when he talks about the vietnamese man he killed. Then we find out that it wasn t O Briens fault from Kiowa to leave us in an even more confused state. He wrote this because he wanted to describe to us that even if he didn t kill the man, it felt like he was responsible, because in a way he felt like the mysterious man was him. This particular event increases our understanding of the story because this is what it felt like to be in the war. The human bodies are clustered and below Alexander the Great s eye level to show dominance and authority. • 9. Similarities Between Matthew And The Gospel Of John The Gospels are essential texts of the Christian faith as they chronical the life of Jesus Christ. And yet they are surrounded by controversies because they seem to conflict each other. But, in the case of the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John, this concern is truly misplaced. Looking closer at the texts shows that they are not entirely dissimilar. Both texts are based in tradition and their relation to Jesus. The texts come from the same founding idea but the difference lies in their uses of tradition to convey different messages to the audience. The Gospel of Matthew uses tradition to provide legitimacy to Jesus and paint him as a continuation of tradition, whereas the Gospel of John alludes to traditional ideas to show Jesus as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similar to Matthew, John makes this obvious from the opening verse of the gospel in which he rewrites the creation myth from the beginning of Genesis. Where Genesis states that In the beginning God created earth (Genesis 1:1), the Gospel of John changes the text to say that in the beginning the was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). There is no longer just God, there is the Word, or Jesus, and the reader is forced to now think about the world in this way. Instead of bridging the gap between the Hebrew Bible and Jesus, John chooses to changing the words and thus change the way the faith is thought about. John rewrites tradition through Jesus and attempts to create a change in the way the faith works. During the crucifixion of Jesus, John continues to allude to the Jewish tradition with subtle changes to past ideas. When on the cross, a thirsty Jesus is given a drink from a sponge full of vinegar on a hyssop (John 19:29). The reed of hyssop, though it could not have actually held a sponge, it s meant to remind the audience of the tradition of using hyssop to spread blood on your door during Passover. And after his death, John refers to the fulfillment of prophecy in 19:36, where scripture said that not a bone of him shall be broken. Subsequently, Jesus is pierced by the spear of a soldier and there came out blood and water (John 19:34). All of these examples allude to the tradition of Passover. These references, however, were originally about the sacrificial lamb to be slaughtered for use on the sacred holiday. John takes this traditional idea and changes it, using the idea in reference to Jesus. Both the cleansing blood and water that fall from Jesus and the bones that are not be broken are meant to liken Jesus to the sacrificial lamb that saves the Jews. • 14. Analysis Of As I Lay Dying Faulkner s Description of Dewey Dell in As I Lay Dying William Faulkner s phrasing, point of view, and grammar in his polyphonic novel, As I Lay Dying, strategically employs the miserably pessimistic yet juvenile voice of Dewey Dell to characterize her as the novel s naïve victim. The only surviving female in the Bundren family, Faulkner presents the hardships that Dewey Dell must endure. In addition, as an uneducated girl with no guidance, Dewey Dell experiences an uncertainty in many issues that arise in her life. Dewey Dell s diction in As I Lay Dying functions to unravel the novel s deeper themes of suffering and selfishness. Burdened with an illegitimate pregnancy after having sex with Lafe, Dewey Dell grieves alone as she is isolated in her guilt and shame. She views the world as a sickening visceral pile of guts, implying that death is her only relief, furthering the theme of mortality. It is interesting that Dewey Dell also describes her pregnancy as I am a little tub of guts and if there is not any room for anything else important in a big tub of guts, how can it be room in a little tub of guts. (Faulkner 58). Which implies the meaning of birth as a miserable duty, rather than a joyful need. As the novel progresses, Dewey Dell works on past New Hope three miles. They are all tragic heroes. A tragic hero is a character that has a fatal flaw, or tragic flaw, that keeps them from perfection. From HBO shows to classic literature, writers have been breaking hearts with tragic heroes for years! Even the title tragic hero sounds melodramatic. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero should have certain traits. He decided that they should be pitied, they should disrespect the natural order, reverse their fate, have a tragic flaw, make an important discovery, and be put in an unavoidable situation (Meirow). In the book, The Great Gatsby, while Jay Gatsby is frantically searching for the American Dream, he displays each of the previous traits. His tragic flaw ends up killing him and affecting those close to him. In the story, readers pity Mr. Gatsby, because he lost his love. Gatsby is most famous for his incessant love for Daisy Buchanan. Moreover, Merlin also knows of the deed that Arthur has done and decides to tell him you have lain by your sister and on her you have conceived a child that shall destroy you and all the knights of your realm (26). This causes Arthur to be aware that his fate is to die at the ends of Mordred. This shows that no matter the choices Arthur will make, his fate will not change. To send out all of these children is to make sure that the son he conceived will not be his demise. Organizations need to keep the pace or lead the way to maintain its relevancy in the market and keep the competition at bay. Thus sustainability is the key to leading by innovation and change, to improve products and services, in order to remain at the top. Organizations achieve sustainability when they have the ability to develop, innovate, and implement changes that would lead to long term success (Froschheiser, 2014). For organizations to implement and commit to the constant change environment, or organic evolution of change, all stakeholders need to be willing and informed participants. Organic Evolution of Change Creating an organizational mentality of change, is the core of a sustainable organization (Christensen, 2014). Establishments have been faced with the necessity to transition from the traditional approach of stability, which ruled previous to the advancement in technology and globalization, or risk irrelevancy or even destruction (Freytag Hollsen, 2010). These two lovers have similar experiences, yet, they have opposite interpretations of what they experience. Dante suggests that individuals cause their own fates by interpreting their experiences vastly differently. In this case, these two lovers interpret their lust/passion pretty differently, when they were alive, and this led one couple to end up in Hell and be punished, while the other couple come together in Heaven, at a divine level. In other words, Dante compares the lovers of Inferno and the lovers of Paradiso. Lovers of Inferno swept up by passion, lack remorse and lack respect for the God. Giving her the freedom to talk indicates that Dante feels sympathy for her and is curious what it feels to punished because of lust, since he has also thought of it many time. However, on the other hand, after Francesca is finished telling her story, Dante faints with pity. Therefore, even though he feels sympathy towards Francesca (since Dante has similar feelings toward another woman than his wife), he is simultaneously aware that even his sympathy might be bad. Thus, he feels so overwhelmed that he faints with pity. Dante says to Francesca, what you suffer here melts me to tears of pity and pain. Tear of pity and pain; pain in these words means empathy, and understanding of her, while pity refers to the judgmental and non appropriate state of her action by Dante. Dante explicitly says that he is overwhelmed by her confession and pride of her action that he faints. Moreover, Francesca and Paolo committed the sin of adultery and inferno 5 has 147 lines. Yet, the word adultery never appear in none of these lines. Analysis Of The Book Gladwell Maddy Rigby Smith AP English III 30 November 2014 In his previous book, Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase tipping point , meaning the moment when an idea or concept suddenly becomes popular within the general populace, and in his following book, he gives us the term Outliers which means something that lies outside of the normal or the expected. In his book Blink, Gladwell provides us with two more phrases; thin slicing and blink. To blink is to act without thinking, working on split second decisions to make choices. Thin slicing is using the small amount of information that is known to come to a conclusion without further searching for more information. According to Gladwell, snap judgements often provide better decisions than well informed, over analysed ones, which is ironic in our generation of information overload. The book, in the way that Gladwell s books tend to do, opens with an anecdote, this one opening much like a detective novel, talking extensively about the discovery of a statue and about the group of analysers that were initially fooled by it, coming to believe that it had shown to be genuine after much study. The article is here, and you ll need Wall Street Journal online access to retrieve it. You can find Jairam s Web site here. There s another very good article on this alliance written by Paul McDougall of Information Week here. Bottom line: No amount of process re definition could have saved Schindler the pains associated with attempting to move into India with a low cost strategy. • 37. Alexander The Great Of The Empire In the Late 4th century, BC Alexander the great was a very popular and was a great king to everyone. He was one of the best kings ancient Greece had. His mindset and goal after his dad died was to take over the Persian empire because this is what his dad wanted to do, he moray thought that this is what he should do to make his dad proud. This all started at the age of 20. Alongside Alexander the Great. The Roman empire took a lot longer to conquer due to its size. The Persian empire was taken over a lot faster. • 38. The Ideological Origins Of The American Revolution Essay Bailyn, Bernard. The Ideological Origins of the American Revolutions. Cambridge: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1992. Thesis: In The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, Bernard Bailyn argues that the ideology of the American Revolution was inspired by a variety of source such as enlightenment writers, past revolutions, and political corruption in the homeland of England. Themes: A theme that is prominent throughout the text in many forms is liberty. One of the causes of revolutionary thought is in America is the thought that liberty was being threatened in England, and therefore would spread to America. Liberty became a dream for some in America once independence from England was obtained, as slavery thrived here in irony. Liberty branched out past the physical sphere as well as Freedom of Religion became based on the idea of religion being the liberty of conscious (263). Another theme of the text is fear . Fear of loss of liberty in their homeland drove many colonists to begin thinking in Revolutionary terms, as previously mentioned. There was also fear on the English side of an American rebellion. Fear is what drove England to force a standing British Army on the Americans. These fears would not subside and would eventually lead to war as neither side would back down. Evidentiary Base: One of the biggest primary sources that Bailyn utilizes is pamphlets from the pre Revolutionary Revolutionary era in America. Pamphlets, as Bailyn ... The region was later called by the Spaniards as Ylocos or Ilocos and its people Ilocanos . The Ilocos Region was already a thriving, fairly advanced cluster of towns and settlements familiar to Chinese, Japanese and Malay traders when the Spaniard explorer Don Juan de Salcedo and members of his expedition arrived in Vigan on June 13, 1572. Forthwith, they made Cabigbigaan (Bigan), the heart of the Ylokos settlement their headquarters which Salcedo called Villa Fernandina and which eventually gained fame as the Intramuros of Ilocandia . Salcedo declared the whole Northern Luzon as an encomienda. Subsequently, he became the encomendero of Vigan and Lieutenant Governor of the Ylokos until his death in July 1574. Augustinian missionaries joined the military forces in conquering the region through evangelization. They established parishes and built churches that still stand today. Three centuries later, Vigan became the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. A royal decree of February 2, 1818 separated Ilocos Norte from Ilocos Sur, the latter to include the northern part of La Union (as far as Namacpacan, now Luna) and all of what is now the province of Abra. The sub provinces of Lepanto and Amburayan in Mt. Province were annexed to Ilocos Sur. • 41. The 2016 Presidential Election Cycle To sum up the 2016 presidential election cycle in one word: anomalous. Unconventional candidates and unprecedented campaign strategies made for one of the zaniest election years to date. And yet, this election was not free from the traditional problems regarding voter turnout, which has historically had a tremendous impact on the results of elections; whichever demographics turn out or fail to on that fateful Tuesday will determine the winners and the losers. Logically, then, the federal government should want to give as many people as possible the chance to get to the polls. However, this is simply not the case. The American Election day falls on a work day, unlike that of many global democratic counterparts. As such, work obligations frequently prevent a large proportion of Americans from casting their ballots, thereby potentially skewing the election results, and acting as a form of voter suppression. Making election day a holiday would prove to be entirely too costly to the economy; instead, election day should simply fall on a weekend day. This would give more Americans the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights and therefore result in a more accurate reflection of the desires of the American people. The first Tuesday following the first Monday of November may seem like a rather arbitrary date to vote. However, Congress had good reason to declare this date as election day in 1845. In order to accommodate as many Americans as possible, most of whom lived in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Acknowledging Language Acknowledging Language The Turing test is, at bottom, about the act of communications (Christian), writes Brian Christian in a 2011 issue of The Atlantic. He titled his article: Man vs Machine. First introduced by Alan Turing in 1957 as the Imitation Game, the Turing test has since grown in fame and controversy. However, the Turing test is not fundamentally about knocking humanity off its pedestal of intelligence; it is actually an observation about our human ability to communicate about intelligence to each other. While language is not sufficient proof of intelligence, communication is fundamental to how people acknowledge each other as intelligent beings. Turing began by proposing the question, Can machines think? (Turing 433). However, instead of answering this question directly, he remade the problem into the form of a test, one that he called, the imitation game (Turing 433). Turing s game was played with three people, a man (A), a woman (B), and an interrogator (C) who may be of either sex where A pretends to be B and B pretends to be A in individual conversations with C (Turing 433). Then, as a substitute for the original question, Turing suggests that we ask, What will happen when a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As explicitly stated by Turing, the test is meant to be a substitution for the question. When talking about the implications of passing the test, he states that these questions replace our original question of Can machines think? (Turing 434). There is no suggestion that passing the Turing test has any answers for the original question. In fact, Turing found the question of about machine thinking too meaningless to deserve discussion (Turing 442), pointing out that the muddled and varying definitions of the words machine and thinking would confound the question and constrict the answer to be sought in a statistical survey such as a Gallup poll (Turing ... • 44. Historical Cost and Fair Value Abstract This paper is written for the accounting theory course as a course project. This paper discusses the differences between the historical cost accounting approach and the fair value accounting approach. The discussion will focus on the debate on using which accounting approach. We begin by stating the definitions of both concepts and discussing them thoroughly, then we state the main advantages of the two approaches followed by comparison between them. The last section of this paper discusses the disadvantages of each approach, including the main criticism points against them. In the end, we draw a conclusion on the best approach to be used in the Accounting profession based on the previous discussion. Introduction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When fair values are estimated using unadjusted or adjusted market prices, they are referred to as mark to market values. If market prices for the same or similar positions are not available, then firms must estimate fair values using valuation models. FAS 157 generally requires these models to be applied using observable market inputs (such as interest rates and yield curves that are observable at commonly quoted intervals) when they are available and unobservable firm supplied inputs (such as expected cash flows developed using the firm s own data) otherwise. When fair values are estimated using valuation models, they are referred to as mark to model values. Advantages of Historical Cost Supporters of Historical Cost Accounting argue that this method has several advantages that make it popular. Some advantages are discussed below. * Historical cost is based on actual, not merely possible, transactions. It is the acquisition price of the assets. The managers only have to record all the assets and liabilities at their acquisition price. Hence they are measured and reported objectively. Historical cost is therefore basically verifiable. Thus, this minimizes the risk of manipulation of figures by the managers. * Historical cost has survived the test of time. Most users of accounting data believe that accounting income is useful and that it constitutes a determinant of the practices and thought patterns of decision makers. * Historical cost is an easier ... • 45. Writing Challenges In Overcoming A Fear Of Writing You want a question that brings the reader inside! You want a question to excite the readers, and pull them inwards, so they can connect to the story when you re writing! When you are writing, you must pull the reader in! They must know what s next! However big or small, everyone has experienced challenges in life. A long time ago, a friend of mine once told me that to overcome a challenge; you need to embrace the problem instead of rejecting it. Now I realize what she was trying to say. When you have a problem, don t run away from it, because then you will never learn how to rise above it. This is especially true in overcoming a fear of writing. Overcoming a fear of writing is hard if it starts in kindergarten. I had the most beautiful handwriting in class. I had received many complements from my teachers for the writing workbook assignments. But I really never liked to write. I did not like writing at all! I had tried by best to be happy but it did not work well. When I wrote, I thought moodily, this is boring. When I wrote, I felt angry because I couldn t spell all the words right. I did not know what to say or write down, and this caused me more frustration. After writing, my hands would feel tired. There was no happiness in writing for me, so decided to just give up. Whenever I was forced to write for my portfolios by hand, I would always complain, trying to wiggle myself out of it. I would do preposterous things: I would whine, be very angry, frustrated, ... • 47. Explain The Three Rites Of Passage 1. The three main rites of passage (Lenkeit 2012: 11) are puberty, childhood, and death. As people go through this arc of life social positions change and we are put into certain parts in life. This because life changes and people go through bodily and physical change throughout life. Rites of passage allows an individual to participate but there is also a group to go with that person in which are close to the individual. This means anything that happen to there one friend and they die or get hurt, it effects them. For example, cultures have types of rituals (Lenkeit 2012: 11) where there is a celebration of life and when life ends we have a ceremony for the death of the person who meant something to us. It s a way of coming to peace and honoring them. 2. Supernatural belief (Lenkeit 2012: 11) is defined as the belief that transcends the observable, natural world. So, this has to do with religion and what we get out of it. Supernatural forces (Lenkeit 2012:11) are the unseen powers that one possesses. These forces go against nature and beyond ... But, there are also ways to fool others as well into thinking something is supernatural. Magic (Lenkeit 2012: 11) for example, is a technique to manipulate supernatural forces and beings. Why Is Goblin Market Still Relevant Today The Continuing Trend of Sin in Modern Film influenced by Goblin Market Tyler Perry s Temptation:Confessions of a Marriage Counselor is a film based on sin and shows how sin is capable of ruining lives. The very title of the movie, explores some biblical references such as temptation leading into sin. The main character Judith is a woman that finds herself in a very tempting situation at work. A bachelor, who is looking for love finds interest in her although she is married. He persuades her with gifts, and expensive things in life that she could only imagine. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Julie Flygare, in her essay intertwining themes in Goblin Market she states that: Rossetti fills Goblin s Market with subject matter and themes that has strong religious associations. There is an important theme of temptation similar to Eve s temptation in the Old Testament. Laura is slyly enticed to eat forbidden fruit, which predictably results in great pain and her lose of innocence (Flygare). Temptation relays the story of woman as falling for the forbidden fruit, which put the world in chaos. Goblin Market can be seen as a hint to Eve eating the forbidden fruit and wrecking humanity. As in Temptation that same dynamic is seen, the woman gets curious and is lured away from good through the lusting of something else, which evidently was the bachelor. Yes, many scholars focus on the feminist aspect of the poem, but the allusion to Eve in the garden of Eden is much more prevalent. Although, Temptation didn t involve fruit, it did however include an aspect that was tempting such as riches, and treasures. It s almost like an individual selling their soul just to get what they want. The sin aspect is definitely portrayed in this modern film, it stills hold that same meaning as to what the poem Goblin Market is trying to denote, which is that sin is everywhere. Plus the idea of women being the main ones involved with sin. Again in the film it made Judith be looked upon as weak, and unable to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dances With Wolves Essay Dances With Wolves No matter how you choose to categorize human beings, whether by race or religion, nationality or gender, the resultant categories will display at least one immutable constant. Each group, no matter how diverse their beliefs or how dissimilar their behaviors, will contain men of honest and peaceful natures as well as men of divisive and violent natures. In the film Dances With Wolves, we are exposed to two distinct categories of people inhabiting post civil war America, the white man and the Native American. When John begins his Westward move, the crude, maniacal white man makes his reappearance. The officer who gives John the information about getting to his new post appears to be downright insane and apparently kills himself. The guide who accompanies John to his post is also no prize. John refers to him as the foulest man alive (Dances with Wolves). This constant exposure to the violent and crude men who make up the white race is an effective first step in shifting our sympathies. We want to distance ourselves from these shameful characters. We don t want to identify with them. Our first exposure to Indians is a mere suggestion of the expected stereotype. We are shown a skeleton on the ground with an arrow stuck through it. So far so good. We are accustomed to that image. Dunbar s guide states that Indians are nothin but thieves and beggars and that you only want to see them when they are dead (Dances with Wolves). He, of course, is such an exemplary man that it s not ironic at all to hear him degrading someone else. From the beginning of the film we are given hints that Dunbar is not like his fellow ugly Americans. When John and his guide arrive at the deserted Fort, the guide is in a hurry to be away.
