The port-city of Caesarea Maritima and the harbor were...
The port city of Caesarea Maritima and the harbor were built by Herod the Great between 25 and 13
BCE. This new city was built upon an already existing city named Strato s Tower. Caesarea was the
largest of King Herod s building ventures and was named in honor of his patron, Caesar Augustus.
The harbor itself was named Sebastos. Herod had hoped the city would became a center for trade in
the Judea province. The new city had many public structures including a vast harbor. Some of these
structures included temples to Caesar and Roma, an aqueduct, an amphitheater and forum. Herod paid
homage to not only Rome but to his Jewish heritage by being able to merge both cultures in this one
city. The ancient city sits between the current cities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was also a shortage of drinking water for the people of the city. Despite these issues, the
builders were able to swiftly complete this massive project and the harbor was created. Josephus gives
us a detailed description of Caesarea calling the harbor the most impressive architectural feature of
Caesarea. He tells us of the lack of topographical features available to the builders such as a cape or
bay. The builders were able to carve the new facility out of the coast line without these features that
had been a prerequisite up until this point. Several other problems occurred during the building
including heavy storms and the constant erosion of the coastline. The outer harbor area had a circular
shape created by two breakwaters extending out from the shore that ran north and south. These
breakwaters are structures built into the water to help protect the harbor from the force of waves. The
south breakwater ran west but curved north at the seaward end. The north breakwater was smaller and
extended straight out west and stopped around 30 meters before the end of the south breakwater,
causing the entrance of the harbor to be on the north side. The large arms were built by large stones.
At the entrance to the harbor stood on both sides three colossi. There were three large statues on the
east that stood on a tower. The ones on the west side were supported by two upright stones.

Essay about Online vs In-Person Reference
I. The Question
The question that was posed to both the Ankeny Public Library and Ohio s Know It Know online
reference service was I am looking for information about the weather in Daytona, Florida.
II. The Services
This question was first posed both Ohio s Know It Now online reference service on Monday, January
27th around 6:30 pm cst. The question was then asked in person at the reference desk at the Ankeny
Public Library on Thursday, January 30th around 6:00 pm cst.
III. The Expectations
When I initially posed the question to both the Know It Now service and to the Ankeny Public library
I was interested in information about the monthly temperature averages, precipitation averages,
hurricane season, etc. During my reference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She then provided me with another link, www.therealtyprosonline.com, which had information about
hurricanes, temperatures and various other items such as culture, demographics, education and
transportation. This website was an all around good source as it provided additional information about
Daytona that I might not have been able to find on my own. During the reference interview Patricia
asked a variety of open and closed ended questions. The first open ended question that she asked was
Was there anything in particular you needed to know about the weather in Daytona? This question
allowed me to elaborate into what specific information I was looking for. Once she found the
resources that meet the requirements I indicated then she proceeded to ask a closed ended question.
The closed ended question that was asked of me was Are those helpful? Indicating are the two
resources that I was provided with what I was looking for. I replied that yes in fact that were. The
entire reference interaction took approximately 12 minutes. At the beginning of the reference
interview, Patricia indicated that it would take a few minutes to research the reference question. She
was conscious of the time as it only took her two minutes to locate the first reference. When
researching information about hurricanes within Daytona, obtaining this information took an
additional 4 minutes to locate. While it might not have been a very lengthy reference transaction,
Patricia was

Critical Analysis Of Wallace Stevens s The Inhabitants
The daily ritual of leaving work in the city to arrive home in the suburbs has been masterfully depicted
in the poem, The Inhabitants. By taking the New Critical analysis approach in using scientific theory,
we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self contained within the text. In our analysis of
The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as defined by Mary Klages, in her
book Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed, is a way of thinking that works to find the
fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made. (p 31). The number 5 is a very
powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see the power of the 5 paradigm and
how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the poem s very meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we
utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, A Postcard From the Volcano , and reduced the story to its bare
bones. Getting to the basics of Guest s piece, we can simply start with its structural rhythm of five
stanzas. Each stanza is a self contained unit that describes the transition from the city to the suburbs.
In the first stanza the descriptive is of the onset of departing office workers pilgrimage, Like people in
an opera on the street, gracefully orchestrate an orderly descent from their office building to the bus
stop. Not the mad dash out the door that school children make as their final school bell rings,
nonetheless just as anxious. Listen to the last line of the first stanza,

Functionalism In The Film Mean Girls
Functionalist theory states that everyone in a society serve a purpose that helps that society function.
All individuals of a society have certain social roles that when working together allows them to form a
society, this allows for there to be inequality amongst individuals (Anderson, Para 3). Functionalism
also says that social order is maintained through public consensus (Anderson, Para 4). So in other
words the adjustments that some individuals make in response to any behavior that isn t part or the
normal norms or deviant behavior, allows for change. In the film Mean Girls, functionalist would look
at all of the different groups in this movie as important and even necessary to the proper function of
the high school (Anderson, Para 3).

Relationships in Good Country People, by Flannery...
Flannery O Connor s Good Country People is a story told through the examination of the relationships
between the four main characters. All of the characters have distinct feelings about the others, from
misunderstanding to contempt. Both Joy Hulga, the protagonist, and Manley Pointer, the antagonist,
are multi faceted characters. While all of the characters have different levels of complexity, Joy Hulga
and Manley Pointer are the deepest and the ones with the most obvious facades.
The first character we encounter is Mrs. Freeman. She is the wife of Mrs. Hopewell s tenant farmer.
She is a very outspoken woman, and she [can] never be brought to admit herself wrong on any point
(O Connor 180). Mrs. Freeman is a gossip; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Freeman knows she cannot compete with Mrs. Hopewell monetarily, but she always gets the last
word in their conversations.
Mrs. Freeman is a very domineering woman. In comparison to her husband, she is the wheel behind
the wheel (O Connor 181). Enjolras classifies Mrs. Freeman as self righteous (36). Because she is not
the landowner, she knows she must be careful in her contempt for Mrs. Hopewell s possessions.
Although she is not as materially wealthy as Mrs. Hopewell, she takes great pride in her daughters.
Mrs. Freeman revels in the fact that Glynese and Carramae have admirers, while Joy Hulga, though
twice their ages, has never had a relationship with a boy.
When Mrs. Hopewell is not in earshot, Mrs. Freeman addresses Joy as Hulga. Mrs. Freeman is
intrigued by Joy Hulga s wooden leg. It is one of the deformities with which she is so fascinated.
Mitchell writes that Mrs. Freeman is fascinated by the leg, but it is a secret infection, spiritual and
psychological in nature, of which the leg provides intimations (2). 1 think Mrs. Freeman calls Joy by
the name she chose because she derives secret pleasure in irritating her.
Asals brings forth the idea that Mrs. Freeman is a symbolic mother to Manley Pointer. Both are given
the last words in the scenes in which they last appear in the story. Since Joy Hulga has turned out to be
as naive as Mrs. Hopewell, Manley is shown to be as evil as Mrs. Freeman can presumably become

Why didn t you become the leader in the gang? Eli chuckles.
If I was the leader would you have love me instead of Nino? His questions don t hit me since I had a

What Is The Solow Economic Growth Model And The Solow...
2. Literature Review
2.1. Introduction to the literature review
The following headings cover the theory and literature relevant to this study.
The literature review is divided into four distinct sections: Economic growth, productivity, industrial
robot density and its effect on labour.
2.2. Economic growth models
2.2.1. The Solow economic growth model and the Solow residual
Burda Severgnini (2014) stated that that for half a century the Solow decomposition and residual
theory have been used to define and measure the productivity component of growth in economics and
management. The work by Solow (1957) remains influential, as it broke the limitations of the
contemporary and restrictive labour and capital input growth models of the period. ... Show more

The so called Solow residual can be explained by the phenomenon where the growth rate in output
exceeds that of the growth rate of inputs (Ten Raa, 2011). This paved the way for the contribution of
productivity as a metric contribution to economic growth theory, and in this context why the increased
productivity effected through ever advancing robotic technologies and rate of implementation are
important to study. Robert Solow s research was core to theoretical concepts of which the Solow
residual, total factor productivity (TFP), the Solow decomposition and the Neo classical growth model
were relevant to this research.
Robert Solow s (1956) seminal essay titled: A contribution to the theory of economic growth
introduced the framework for the development of the neo classical growth model. Productivity is a
key enabler of economic growth (Autor, 2015; Krone, 2014; Mokyr, Vickers Ziebarth, 2015). These
theories affirmed the applicability of industrial robot density as an accurate metric and enabler of
economic growth within the neo classical economic growth theory

Generational Themes In Hamlet
Hamlet is a play that despite age, can deliver themes that consistently transcend generational
differences, even when those differences span hundreds of years. It is the strength of these themes in
Hamlet that has given the play such overwhelming cultural gravitas that allows it to remain relevant to
this day. As such, it is a highly appropriate play for high school students to study. The core messages
of generational conflict, unfolding to one s true self, and morality are struggles faced by both Hamlet,
and high school students. Consequently, this can motivate students in their studies when they discover
a character, that despite the difference in time, is so easily relatable. When students recognize
similarities between Hamlet and themselves, such as a distaste for the tedious old fools (2.2.219) with
their plentiful lack of wit (2.2.199), it creates a connection between the students and this seemingly
ancient piece of literature. A connection, that hopefully after the high school level, can be nurtured
into a passion for literature. A connection that allows for greater insight and analysis at this current
level. A connection, that if students are discouraged from making now, they are unlikely to make later
in their lives, as once they grow older the heyday in the blood is tame. (3.4.69) and they will no longer
be able to connect with the younger characters such as Hamlet, or the young Fortinbras, / Of
unimproved mettle hot and full (1.1.95 96).

Pricing And Distribution Of Pricing
FUT pricing has attractive properties compared to usage based pricing; it reduces utility variance by
bundling plan units, and thus it satisfies diverse consumer needs and could thus enhance firm profits.
FUT pricing also has a key advantage over flat rate pricing; by having more than one price point, FUT
pricing makes it efficient and flexible to accommodate heterogeneous consumer needs, making it
possible to increase total social welfare (combination of firm profit and consumer surplus). However,
since FUT menu pricing is generally more difficult than flat rate pricing to implement in practice, it is
useful to understand when and by how much FUT pricing can perform better compared to flat rate
pricing in terms of firm s profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare. Therefore, we aim at deriving
an optimal solution for FUT menu pricing to both extend the literature on the pricing of information
services and also to enhance managerial practice by testing our model with sophisticated analytical
and empirical techniques.
FUT menu pricing resembles traditional quantity discounts for physical goods (e.g., Monahan, 1984;
Lee and Rosenblatt, 1986; Munson and Rosenblatt, 1998; Corbett and Groote, 2000; Shin and Benton,
2004) in the sense that the unit price for a bigger size plan is discounted. However, unlike its
popularity for information services, flat rate pricing is not as popular for physical goods perhaps
because of the positive marginal cost associated with each unit

Brazil s The Unified Health System Essay
In Brazil s recent history, the country s healthcare market has been largely inaccessible to foreign
investment. The country has dedicated public funds to run health care facilities. According to (The
Lancet, 2014), Brazil s 1998 constitution officially declared all citizens were entitled to healthcare.
This provision birthed the Unified Health System (SUS). A system which relies heavily on taxes and
government support. Historically, Brazil s government has blocked FDI inflows in the health sector.
However stagnation, combined with a strong desire to spur economic growth, gave way to a major
policy change. As noted by (Alves, 2015), in January 2015 a new provision was enacted by the
Brazilian government to allow foreign investment in the health sector. This landmark policy alteration
may mark the beginning of dramatic increases in the countries Healthcare sector over the next decade.
Brazil s Healthcare system is divided into public (SUS) and private health coverage. As economic
prosperity increased over the past 20 years, more citizens have opted to purchase better coverage in
the public sector. Now, in 2015, policy reform has opened the door to foreign investors to enter the
market. This includes hospital construction/management, health insurance, even bio technical research
and development. Alves (2015), details the statement from representatives at Chenut Oliveira

The Pros And Cons Of Climate Change
Climate Change Rough Draft Richard Hilderman, who has a P.H.D in microbiology, said The 20th
Century has been warmer than any other time period in the last 400 years (60+). Climate change has
been brought upon by the burning of fossil fuels, which releases greenhouse gases (Hilderman 60+).
The greenhouse gases then make a blanket surrounding the earth, which traps heat, making the world
warmer (Hilderman 60+). Even though there are some overstated facts regarding climate change,
policies to stop it would have a positive effect on the job and economic market, and climate change is
the most pressing issue of today that needs more attention and worldwide policies to combat it.
Climate change has shown itself in many different ways. For instance, the global temperature has gone
up little by little since 1880 (Shaftel). This then accumulated to an increase of 1 degree Celsius in
2015 (Shaftel). The global temperature rise shows that the earth is heating up due to the heat being
trapped by the greenhouse blanket created by humans. Along with rising global temperatures, the
ocean s water level has risen roughly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, scientists used to think that the glaciers could someday be all gone, but now no scientist
is even thinking about that (Evers et al.). There is no reason that scientists today could also be
overstating their findings and prediction. Also, climate change is not as pressing of an issue as other
matters such as HIV/AIDS (Berger). Therefore, money and other resources should be put into
malnutrition, diseases, and other worldwide issues. Finally, there would be a huge amount of job loss
in the natural resource sector due to the change to renewable energy (Lefevre). The job loss would be
significant because there would be thousands of people who are not getting money to support their
family, or

The Sherman Act Of 1890
A Sherman Act of 1890 The Sherman Act of 1890 as referenced in McConnell and Campbell (2011),
consists of two main regulations; Section 1 Every contract, combination in the form of a trust or
otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign
nations is declared to be illegal. Section 2 Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to
monopolize, or combine or conspire with any person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or
commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony (as
later amended from misdemeanor ). (p.375) The historical context of the Sherman Act lies in the
corporate climate of the United States during the time period preceding the creation of these antitrust
laws. At that time the market was dominated by several monopolies in industries such as railroads,
tobacco production, meatpacking and coal mining. The US Government determined the monopolies
did not provide enough fair competition in those industries to provide protection of consumers. The
Sherman Act of 1890 created the legislation to declare the existing monopolies illegal and made
violation of the Act a felony, essentially deeming the existing monopolies in violation of the law.
These two regulations made common practices such as price fixing and market divisions illegal. The
Sherman Act would open the doors for individuals and government agencies such as the U.S

Bosnian Rwandan Genocide Comparison Essay
Discuss and Analyze the similarities and differences between the genocide committed in Rwanda and
Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The Rwandan and Bosnian Genocides were more similar than different due
to the fact that both were supported by the governing force at the time, and both were ignited due to
past tensions between two separate ethnicities. The Rwandan and Bosnian Genocides were similar in
the fact that both were supported by the ruling force at the time. The Rwandan Genocide, was
organized by the newly created Hutu government, while the Bosnian Genocide, was executed by the
Bosnian Serb Army with support from the Yugoslav Army. In Rwanda, the government was formerly

In both genocides, the ruling force of the country supported or organized the genocide of its country.
The Hutu government massacred the Tutsi, and the Serbians massacred the Bosnian Muslims. Another
similarity between the two genocides was that both were started due to past hatreds between the two
conflicting factions. The Rwandan Genocide was ignited due to hatred of Tutsi by the Hutu when the
former were still in power. The Bosnian Genocide due to long lasting hatred between the Serbs and
Croats. When Rwanda was first colonized Tutsi were considered to be above the Hutu, but the balance
of power was shifted between the two groups when Belgium abandoned the state due to revolution.
When the Tutsi were in power, the Hutu were always treated inferior to the Tutsi. The hatred of the
Tutsi by the Hutu lasted long enough that the Hutu took revenge on the Tutsi in the form of genocide.
In the Bosnian Genocide the animosity and the hatred began even earlier. It began in the Croatian War
from 1991 to 1995. Serbian would occupy 30% of Croatian land. However the Croats in the displaced
territory were abused by the Serbs, and when Croatia received full independence in 1992, the
Croatians took revenge on the Serbs. In the same year, the Bosnian War began between the Serbs and
Croats over the newly declared independent Republic of Bosnia Herzegovina. In an act of revenge for

What Is The Mood Of Starry Night
The oil painting Starry Night was painted in 1889 during Van Gogh s time in an asylum in Saint
Remy. Van Gogh s painting uses spiral lines to create whimsical, abstract swirls in the sky, a medium
thick curved line to create the hills of the village below and broken lines to create a unique, textured
look. A variety of geometric and organic shapes are displayed in this painting. Circular stars, an
abstract tree, hills and a crescent moon are demonstrated as organic shapes. With the geometric shapes
including the stars, the church, and the houses. Beautiful hues of the split complementary colours;
blue, yellow and yellow orange are included. Therefore, using hues of blue including cerulean blue (
light blue), arctic blue (lighter blue) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most distinctive feature is what I believe to be the gold crescent moon inside a halo of yellow
white light. It immediately catches the eye and stands out amongst the blues and muted yellows and
blues. The subject of the painting is a starry night over a village. I believe that Vincent Van Gogh has
produced the oil painting Starry Night to express his internal emotions while in the asylum in the form
of the stars amongst the sky and includes his spontaneous emotions and mental illness and awaken
emotions within the painting to the viewer of the artwork. His message is what I believe to be that
there is light in the darkness, hope among despair and a light at the end of the tunnel for mental
illness. He painted Starry Night towards the end of his career , 13 months before his death. Honestly, I
love this painting, it conveys so much emotion, the use of colours attracts me, the painting has a
somewhat bittersweet aura and in some way, this is how life is, I love the deeper meaning and the

What s Wrong With Online Marketing Advertising Practices
There are a number of types of products you should actively avoid. If you ve read our two part series
about Honest Marketing Techniques What s Wrong With Online Marketing Advertising Practices you
already know there are issues with uncontrolled advertising on the internet. Perhaps you ve already
been burned by purchasing a bad product, or with luck, you ve only been suspicious that a given
product may not be what it seems to be. In part one of this three part series, we will first look at blind
advertisements.
There is some similarity in product launches being seen lately, especially with ClickBank launches. It
isn t a problem with ClickBank per se, but as one of the most popular third party organizations

Blind copy on a $37 or $77 price point will sell the living daylights out of your product. It will also
destroy your customer list you just built, send refunds through the roof and create support nightmares.
Yes, I know that if you are an affiliate, you don t have to deal with the support issues, but you will
have lower income and ClickBank will withhold larger amounts from your checks to cover the
anticipated refund rates.
Compare that to the copy for an ethical advertisement. You get real information about what you ARE
going to get, so you know what to expect when you download the product. You don t get exaggerated
claims about how you will feel, or perhaps how much money you will make, but you will get concrete
information about what the product actually is and what benefits it provides.
I personally would never recommend any product that I haven t purchased myself and found to be
effective, and certainly not any product that doesn t provide up front information about exactly what it
is.
Second Rule: Loopholes and secrets are Blind too.
If the advertising copy promises a newly discovered loophole , you should be very, very careful about
the product. You should be aware that the great majority of loopholes are soon closed, often even
before major sales occur for the product that supposedly takes advantage of them.

One of Roger s biggest influences, Aristotle, had been banned in the University of France, where
Roger wanted to work. In the 1240s they removed that rule and gave the chance for kids to explore

Roach is the boxing coach of world champion 8 division world, Manny Pacquiao and more, like

it was cut short, since due to taking many blows and barrages of punches over all those years, he

The Building Blocks Of Successful Leadership Essay
4 The building blocks of successful leadership pipeline
Despite the benefits listed above, leadership succession remains a cause of concern for a number of
organisations. DDI s Global Leadership Forecast from 2011 showed how only 38% of participating
leaders said the quality of leadership within their organisation is either very good or excellent. More
importantly, only 18% of HR professionals in the same survey felt the organisations have a strong
bench to respond to future needs. In order to make the most of the leadership pipeline model,
organisations must also focus on the following four elements.
A simple system with buy in from the senior leadership team
The focus should be on creating a clear and simple pipeline framework. The more complex the
program, the more it risks failing at some point. If the organisation is able to reduce the bureaucracy
required to run the system, then it ensures the system is based on clarity and effectiveness. One way to
remove complexity from the system is by narrowing its focus. The processes used must be focused on
the actual objectives and needs of the organisation. There s no reason to add broadness by creating a
far reaching process when there is no need for it. The scope is at its best when it doesn t focus on
every person within the organisation, but narrows the effort down towards a few key players.
Furthermore, it s important to ensure the system is flexible enough to respond the changing needs
within the organisation.

Genesis 1 Research Paper
In the Bible it tells us in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
However, it is astonishing to hear about how many people do not believe this to be true. After
interviewing a few of my friends and family a couple weeks ago I found out their beliefs on how long
they believe the days in Genesis 1 are, how old they believe earth and life are, whether or not they
believe man and apes share a common ancestor, and whether or not they believe Adam and Eve were
real people. To answer the first question of how long are the days in Genesis 1, my friend Maddie said,

To answer this question my friend Maddie said that the Earth and life are difficult to separate because
life exists on earth and is one with it (plant, particles, water, etc.) These are the things that are
supposed to be around 2 billion years old. Maddie said, I am not a scientist, however, I know that what
we have now has developed over time and I believe that it has changed. (I.e. Dinosaurs, continents,
rocks) My friend Garrett said that he believes the earth is trillions of years old because of the scientific
findings. My friend Bogdan believes that the earth is 4.54 billions years old according to evolution. I
believe that the earth is about 6,000 years old. If you add up the genealogies mentioned in Matthew,
you get a total of close to 6,000 years. In the Bible we can also calculate about 2,000 years from the
time of Abraham to Christ, and using genealogies again, there were about 2,000 years before the
flood. There are certain things in the world that definitely appear to be older than what most
creationists would claim the earth to be. However, I believe that God could have created things with
apparent age and that the flood could have influenced our dating of various items, as well. One of the
main problems with an older earth is death before sin. Adam and Eve would have had to have lived for
millions of years before sin entered the

International Institutions, Treaties, And Sanctions Essay
International Institutions, Treaties, and Sanctions and
Their Effects on International Business International institutions abound in the realm of international
business. As globalization increases, disputes multiply. The responsibilities of these organizations can
vary due to the needs of its members, such as monetary or trade issues. Moreover, the support these
institutions provide may come in the form of various agreements to include the negotiation or
enforcement of sanctions and treaties which will either stop or promote trade between nations.
International Institutions
There are varying types of organizations which monitor or assist with disputes or negotiations on an
international level. Some of these factions focus on a more regional area, such as the Free Trade
Commission, not to be confused with the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC). According
to NAFTAnow.org (2013), the Free Trade Commission watches over the North American Free Trade
Act (NAFTA) which took effect in 1994. This agreement, as a result, lifted trade barriers between
Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The Free Trade Commission has representatives from all three
member nations who implement, oversee, negotiate, and resolve disputes arising from the
interpretation of the agreement (About NAFTA | North American Free Trade Agreement, 2013).
More importantly, there are international trade organizations who reach a much larger scale and focus

Ocean Iron Fertilization By Oceanographer John Martin
In recent years, ocean iron fertilization has become a topic of widespread debate in the scientific,
political and legal communities. First conceptualized by oceanographer John Martin in the 1980s,
ocean iron fertilization is a geoengineering technology that involves the intentional introduction of
iron to the surface waters of high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the oceans in order to
stimulate the growth of phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplankton blooms mature over a period of thirty to
sixty days and like terrestrial plants, they too absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. When the
phytoplankton die, organic carbon material sinks to the ocean floor and atmospheric carbon dioxide is
sequestered in the deep ocean for relatively long spans of time. By perpetuating the growth of carbon
capturing phytoplankton blooms, ocean iron fertilization reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide, thereby
mitigating the profound consequences of climate change.
With the world s carbon dioxide levels on the rise and the effects of global warming becoming
increasingly devastating, it is imperative now more than ever that every mitigation strategy be
thoroughly explored. Although ocean iron fertilization may seem like a fairly simple method of
sequestering carbon dioxide, there is in fact a plethora of issues linked to this mitigation strategy. The
aim of this literature review is to examine and analyze some of the aspects that make ocean iron
fertilization such a controversial method of

How Is Arthur Dimmesdale Selfish
In the event of any natural disaster, the outcome of the unforeseen predicament is impossible to

the parent s fear could gain control, preventing an escape from the storm. When given the choice to be
conquered by his version of mother nature or abandon the storm completely, Dimmesdale failed to
escape due to his cowardice features. Although he eventually confessed to his sin, Nathaniel

Arthur Dimmesdale s first sign of selfishness appeared just as the novel began. As Hester Prynne
stood on the scaffold in the first scene, Dimmesdale could have confessed the truth to the whole town
then, but chose not to. Dimmesdale s self centeredness allowed him to stare straight into Hester s eyes
during her punishment and remain quiet, even though he should have been up there accepting the
punishment as well. Dimmesdale displayed another heartless act in the Governor s garden. As Hester
plead for her rights to keep Pearl, Dimmesdale showed no sympathy to confess the truth. The fact that
he stood there, seeing, hearing Hester s pain and the struggle she had raising Pearl on her own, and
chose to stay hidden in his lie, shows the true selfishness that he withholds in his heart. Hawthorne
controlled Dimmesdale s actions to be egoistical in order to, once again, emulate all of humanity in
one character. Humanity s greatest weakness, in Hawthorne s eyes, was selfishness. A society in which
everyone has only an interest in their own well being is not a society Hawthorne desired to

Essay about 19th Century Women
19th Century Women

Women in the nineteenth century, for the most part, had to follow the common role presented to them
by society. This role can be summed up by what historians call the cult of domesticity . The McGuffey
Readers does a successful job at illustrating the women s role in society. Women that took part in the
overland trail as described in Women s Diaries of the Westward Journey had to try to follow these
roles while facing many challenges that made it very difficult to do so.
One of the most common expectations for women then is that they are responsible for doing the chore

of view talking about his mother, Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair; Over my slumbers

the mother is to watch over her children and take care of them. Moreover, in the Women s Diaries it
talks about the hardship mothers had, Accounts shade and darken in the pages of women whose
energies were spent nursing and caring for infants and small children (Schlissel 115). It says that their
diaries turn in essence bleak because they are being overwhelmed with so many duties and then on top
of that having to care for the children. Being on the trail made it very difficult for the women to
perform these duties as the author points out, The West to them meant the challenge of rearing a
family and maintaining domestic order against the disordered life on the frontier (Schlissel 115). The
women had to face to challenge and they did in a way that shows that the men were not the only ones
who had an immense amount of courage in this great undertaking.
An integral part of the nineteenth century Victorian way of life was having strong morals. The women
were seen as pure beings and therefore it was there job to keep the family unit moral. In The

Barn Burning Sarty Character Analysis
Blinded by Loyalty
The word loyalty can be broken down into its main term, loyal. To be loyal is to show dedication to an
ideology, individual, or group whom presumably all share the same beliefs. For instance, many people
use either Apple or Android cell phones. It is not that one is better than the other, it is usually just what
a person has grown up using. This can be described as brand loyal. In Barn Burning the family loyalty
theme is made evident throughout the story by bringing to light the dynamic in which the Snopes
family is expected to act with emphasis on a strong, harsh father and a son with underlying values that
differ from those of his family.

Obeying is the basic principle in loyalty, one in which Sarty cannot differ between. For him loyalty is
pleasing his father no matter what the consequence. That is until he can break free from the oppression
of loyalty and finally see that it was loyalty that was blinding his true character. It is not until 20 years
later that Sarty realizes that society wanted only truth, justice (Faulkner 3). It was not society whom
demanded extreme loyalty, it was merely his family and more specifically his power hungry father.
Abner at one point in the story takes it as far as to tell Sarty to stick to his families own blood because
if not then he would have no one else to rely on (Faulkner 3). This shallow threat is yet another attack
on a boy that aims to please his father, but is so caught in the middle of his battle with loyalty and self
that he can be depicted as flying and being removed or suspended from the ground (Kirchdorfer 116).

Characteristics Of Iceberg Theory By Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway was one of the iconic American writers of the 20th century. He was part of the so
called lost generation of U.S. expatriate writers, who became adults during the time of World War I
and settled in Europe (mainly in Paris) afterwards. His literary works include novels, short stories, and
non fiction prose, and they have earned him both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize. While many of the
American expats Hemingway knew personally are considered founders or adherents of literary
modernism (Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, etc.), he was not a modernist writer himself. In fact,
he developed a distinct style of writing, which he called The Iceberg Theory . Before becoming a

As in the other two short stories, the plot revolves around love. Similar to A Very Short Story , the
male protagonist is an American whose name is not given and the female protagonist is referred to by
a single syllable. Once more, a cursory reading of the text would likely leave an impression that the
narrative is about nothing more than a casual conversation between a couple waiting for a train.
Unlike in The End of Something , no character aids the reader in understanding what is actually going
on. Again, the title provides the key to the real meaning behind the dialogue. A white elephant is an
expensive object, but one that nobody wants to have. Moreover, it brings to mind the expression the
elephant in the room , which denotes something obvious that nobody wants to talk about. Though it is
never explicitly mentioned, the elephant is in fact the unborn baby of the female protagonist whose
life is on the line because the two characters are discussing abortion, which was still illegal and
socially unacceptable at the time. The conversation in the text is interesting and somewhat untypical of
Hemingway s writing. It appears that neither the man nor the woman say what they really think, in
fact, at some points they seem to be saying the exact opposite. He strongly favors the abortion but then
repeatedly claims that he does not want her to do it. She would like to keep the child but then

Essay On Lucretia
The purpose of this assignment is to present a brief yet comprehensive formal analysis of the work in
question, namely, Joos van Cleve s Lucretia. The painting was completed ca. 1525 by the Flemish
artist most likely in Antwerp, where he was highly active from about 1511 until his death in 1540. The
painting is oil on panel (75.9 x 60.6 cm) and is exemplary of the early Baroque period. The work
depicts at the broadest level the suicide of the early Roman historical figure, Lucretia, following her
rape c. 510 BC by Sextus Tarquinius, son of the last Roman king. The incident bears historical
significance as it marks rising popular dissatisfaction of the Roman people with the monarchy, and the

This image of Lucretia is not that of some mythological or religious origin, say, of a venus, for
example, part of whose appeal is the depiction of nudity without social repercussion. With respect to
the time which bore this painting, it is not unlikely that this inclination to experiment with the female
nude was in part sublimated by means of this historical subject matter, however, so say that Lucretia s
nudity is illustrated only on account of what would amount to the privilege of moral impunity is
perhaps too simple an explanation. It seems much more reasonable to posit that Lucretia s own nudity,
especially in conjunction with her opulent, indeed, what is surely very expensive clothing (other
depictions of Lucretia typically omit the inclusion of clothes altogether), is employed by Cleve to
highlight Lucretia s shame amid her wealth and regal lifestyle, her clothes have been cleaved open,
and she had been irrevocable hurt and humiliated. Whether intended by the artist, this awkward
parting of Lucretia s garments over her left shoulder and down through her abdomen adds greatly to
the desolation and pity associated with her historical figure. Ultimately, this compositional decision
serves to augment the paintings emotional

Analysis Of David Orr s The Principle Of Mastering Oneself
An important point in which David Orr goes into considerable detail about is his six principles to
rethink education. First, he ensures that all education is environmental education by every mean. In
western education particularly, students are more often taught that they are apart of taught that they are
apart from the natural world, or above it if you will. Leesa Fawcett enforces this idea on page 107 by
stating:
We have been taught to measure, manage, exploit the environment, to make money off of it on the
back s of others near and far. We ve been encouraged to ignore it, to stay out of its messy dirty places.
To ignore it is to ignore ourselves, our bodies, our forces and our relationships
Fawcett implies that undeniably students are being taught that education is the way to success and
success means exploiting the environment and ignoring the importance of sustainability. Next Orr uses
the Greek term, Paideia to formulate his principle of mastering oneself is the goal of education and
subjects are the tools of doing so (Orr, 2004, pg. 9). The current education system looks at specializing
in one particular subject, and being really knowledgeable in that subject alone is what education
strives for. However, one simply cannot just study one specific subject with no reflection on others,
because that is what aids one in formulating their own ideas and understandings of not only that

Darkness Can Be Pure, And Light
Darkness can be pure, and light can be tainted. This is the view with which Conrad expresses his work
in Heart of Darkness. Conrad through his writing demonstrates how light and Darkness does not
always hold rigid values. In Conrad s narrative, the traditional values of light and darkness is not
upheld, it can be seen how light can be used to emphasize evil while Darkness or black can be a sign
of purity. The motif of light and darkness are present throughout.
In his narrative of the ship Marlow refers to Europe as one of the dark places of the earth. In this quote
Darkness is not representative of evil, but instead of the uncivilized state in which Europe used to be
before being brought to the light which can be inferred to represent civilization. For example, when
Marlow refers to the explorers who were men enough to face the darkness it is in reference to
courageous explorers of the past who dare to explore the unknown. Civilized men of the past went on
these expeditions to find wealth and a name for themselves in history. Conrad uses Darkness to
represent the unknown in this context.
Marlow refers to light being like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. This
quote use light as a simile of life, and of how short it can be. This brings out a characteristic of light;
light does not last. Light although revealing when present does not last darkness is the natural default
in life. The violence in the two simile used

Dyslexia Studies
This paper synthesizes two journal articles about current research in assessment. Classroom
Implications of Recent into Literacy Development: From Predictors to Assessment and Toward a
Research Based Assessment of Dyslexia: Using Cognitive Measures to Identify Reading Disabilities
are the scholarly resources compared and evaluated.
Differences Between Studies Each study utilized different methods to collect assessment information.
Toward a Research Based Assessment of Dyslexia: Using Cognitive Measures to Identify Reading
Disabilities used one hundred five participants from a random sample completed measures of reading
achievement and cognitive abilities, based on a synthesis of current dyslexia research (Bell, S. M.,

Bell, McCallum, S. R., Cox, E. A. 2003 encourage future researchers to continue to explore the role of
visual processing in orthography and reading disabilities and to link findings on the cognitive
underpinnings of learning to results from the emerging body of brain research. They also insist that the
Test of Dyslexia (TOD) be refined to include a Word Memory subtest and modify or completely do
away with the Visual Closure subtest as it is outdated and has many regressions. Shapiro, L. R., Hurry,
J., Masterson, J., Wydell, T. N., Doctor, E, 2009, a study found that additional research is necessary to
ascertain whether training in phonological awareness skills with older children or students at
secondary schools would be as beneficial as with younger students. They believe that a greater
consistency in literacy assessments across research studies will further understand of reading
difficulties. Through the extensive literature review, researchers in both studies have concluded that no
one assessment tool is reliable enough to measure reading complications. These studies have found
that multiple assessment tools must be used to evaluate students reading

Purpose Of A Qualitative Purpose
A purpose statement is one, or a number of sentences providing a summary of the principle objective
of a piece of research (Creswell, p.123, 2014). The role it plays is crucial in every study regardless of
an approach being quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method. It stands as the most important
statement in and entire piece of work, therefore it must be clear, specific, and informative (Creswell, p
123, 2014). Without it, comprehension amongst audiences is challenging. The aim of this essay is to
describe the elements required to produce a qualitative purpose statement of suitable standard as well
as to apply such elements to an area of research. Before further procedure, attention must be drawn to
the fact that the sole focus is on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, most of such elements constituting a purpose statement of descent quality are included, with the
exemption of one. Most importantly, the intent of this study is stated through the word purpose. There
is also a focus on one sole concept which is the development of social and affective relationships in an
online learning and their influence on [the learning processes and outcomes of the students] (Wang,
2005). The manner in which the writer s observations and research has been conducted is indicated
through the use of the action verb to explore. Yet another element included in this purpose statement is
the use of neutral words or phrases. There is nothing stated that indicates any particular outcome. The
study participants and site have also been mentioned, which are students within the online learning
community; however the online community and group of students were not specified in this above
purpose statement. Instead, they could have been specified earlier on in the introduction as well. There
has also been an indication of the limitation of the study which was to learning online , instead of

  • 2. The port-city of Caesarea Maritima and the harbor were... The port city of Caesarea Maritima and the harbor were built by Herod the Great between 25 and 13 BCE. This new city was built upon an already existing city named Strato s Tower. Caesarea was the largest of King Herod s building ventures and was named in honor of his patron, Caesar Augustus. The harbor itself was named Sebastos. Herod had hoped the city would became a center for trade in the Judea province. The new city had many public structures including a vast harbor. Some of these structures included temples to Caesar and Roma, an aqueduct, an amphitheater and forum. Herod paid homage to not only Rome but to his Jewish heritage by being able to merge both cultures in this one city. The ancient city sits between the current cities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was also a shortage of drinking water for the people of the city. Despite these issues, the builders were able to swiftly complete this massive project and the harbor was created. Josephus gives us a detailed description of Caesarea calling the harbor the most impressive architectural feature of Caesarea. He tells us of the lack of topographical features available to the builders such as a cape or bay. The builders were able to carve the new facility out of the coast line without these features that had been a prerequisite up until this point. Several other problems occurred during the building including heavy storms and the constant erosion of the coastline. The outer harbor area had a circular shape created by two breakwaters extending out from the shore that ran north and south. These breakwaters are structures built into the water to help protect the harbor from the force of waves. The south breakwater ran west but curved north at the seaward end. The north breakwater was smaller and extended straight out west and stopped around 30 meters before the end of the south breakwater, causing the entrance of the harbor to be on the north side. The large arms were built by large stones. At the entrance to the harbor stood on both sides three colossi. There were three large statues on the east that stood on a tower. The ones on the west side were supported by two upright stones. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Critical Analysis Of Wallace Stevens s The Inhabitants The daily ritual of leaving work in the city to arrive home in the suburbs has been masterfully depicted in the poem, The Inhabitants. By taking the New Critical analysis approach in using scientific theory, we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self contained within the text. In our analysis of The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as defined by Mary Klages, in her book Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed, is a way of thinking that works to find the fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made. (p 31). The number 5 is a very powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see the power of the 5 paradigm and how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the poem s very meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, A Postcard From the Volcano , and reduced the story to its bare bones. Getting to the basics of Guest s piece, we can simply start with its structural rhythm of five stanzas. Each stanza is a self contained unit that describes the transition from the city to the suburbs. In the first stanza the descriptive is of the onset of departing office workers pilgrimage, Like people in an opera on the street, gracefully orchestrate an orderly descent from their office building to the bus stop. All of the characters have distinct feelings about the others, from misunderstanding to contempt. Both Joy Hulga, the protagonist, and Manley Pointer, the antagonist, are multi faceted characters. While all of the characters have different levels of complexity, Joy Hulga and Manley Pointer are the deepest and the ones with the most obvious facades. • 12. Generational Themes In Hamlet Hamlet is a play that despite age, can deliver themes that consistently transcend generational differences, even when those differences span hundreds of years. It is the strength of these themes in Hamlet that has given the play such overwhelming cultural gravitas that allows it to remain relevant to this day. As such, it is a highly appropriate play for high school students to study. The core messages of generational conflict, unfolding to one s true self, and morality are struggles faced by both Hamlet, and high school students. Consequently, this can motivate students in their studies when they discover a character, that despite the difference in time, is so easily relatable. When students recognize similarities between Hamlet and themselves, such as a distaste for the tedious old fools (2.2.219) with their plentiful lack of wit (2.2.199), it creates a connection between the students and this seemingly ancient piece of literature. A connection, that hopefully after the high school level, can be nurtured into a passion for literature. A connection that allows for greater insight and analysis at this current level. • 13. Pricing And Distribution Of Pricing FUT pricing has attractive properties compared to usage based pricing; it reduces utility variance by bundling plan units, and thus it satisfies diverse consumer needs and could thus enhance firm profits. FUT pricing also has a key advantage over flat rate pricing; by having more than one price point, FUT pricing makes it efficient and flexible to accommodate heterogeneous consumer needs, making it possible to increase total social welfare (combination of firm profit and consumer surplus). However, since FUT menu pricing is generally more difficult than flat rate pricing to implement in practice, it is useful to understand when and by how much FUT pricing can perform better compared to flat rate pricing in terms of firm s profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare. Therefore, we aim at deriving an optimal solution for FUT menu pricing to both extend the literature on the pricing of information services and also to enhance managerial practice by testing our model with sophisticated analytical and empirical techniques. FUT menu pricing resembles traditional quantity discounts for physical goods (e.g., Monahan, 1984; Lee and Rosenblatt, 1986; Munson and Rosenblatt, 1998; Corbett and Groote, 2000; Shin and Benton, 2004) in the sense that the unit price for a bigger size plan is discounted. However, unlike its popularity for information services, flat rate pricing is not as popular for physical goods perhaps because of the positive marginal cost associated with each unit ... • 14. Brazil s The Unified Health System Essay In Brazil s recent history, the country s healthcare market has been largely inaccessible to foreign investment. The country has dedicated public funds to run health care facilities. According to (The Lancet, 2014), Brazil s 1998 constitution officially declared all citizens were entitled to healthcare. This provision birthed the Unified Health System (SUS). A system which relies heavily on taxes and government support. Historically, Brazil s government has blocked FDI inflows in the health sector. However stagnation, combined with a strong desire to spur economic growth, gave way to a major policy change. As noted by (Alves, 2015), in January 2015 a new provision was enacted by the Brazilian government to allow foreign investment in the health sector. This landmark policy alteration may mark the beginning of dramatic increases in the countries Healthcare sector over the next decade. Brazil s Healthcare system is divided into public (SUS) and private health coverage. As economic prosperity increased over the past 20 years, more citizens have opted to purchase better coverage in the public sector. The Pros And Cons Of Climate Change Climate Change Rough Draft Richard Hilderman, who has a P.H.D in microbiology, said The 20th Century has been warmer than any other time period in the last 400 years (60+). Climate change has been brought upon by the burning of fossil fuels, which releases greenhouse gases (Hilderman 60+). The greenhouse gases then make a blanket surrounding the earth, which traps heat, making the world warmer (Hilderman 60+). Even though there are some overstated facts regarding climate change, policies to stop it would have a positive effect on the job and economic market, and climate change is the most pressing issue of today that needs more attention and worldwide policies to combat it. Climate change has shown itself in many different ways. For instance, the global temperature has gone up little by little since 1880 (Shaftel). This then accumulated to an increase of 1 degree Celsius in 2015 (Shaftel). The global temperature rise shows that the earth is heating up due to the heat being trapped by the greenhouse blanket created by humans. Section 2 Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony (as later amended from misdemeanor ). At that time the market was dominated by several monopolies in industries such as railroads, tobacco production, meatpacking and coal mining. The US Government determined the monopolies did not provide enough fair competition in those industries to provide protection of consumers. The Sherman Act of 1890 created the legislation to declare the existing monopolies illegal and made violation of the Act a felony, essentially deeming the existing monopolies in violation of the law. The Rwandan Genocide was ignited due to hatred of Tutsi by the Hutu when the former were still in power. The Bosnian Genocide due to long lasting hatred between the Serbs and Croats. When Rwanda was first colonized Tutsi were considered to be above the Hutu, but the balance of power was shifted between the two groups when Belgium abandoned the state due to revolution. Blind copy on a $37 or $77 price point will sell the living daylights out of your product. It will also destroy your customer list you just built, send refunds through the roof and create support nightmares. Yes, I know that if you are an affiliate, you don t have to deal with the support issues, but you will have lower income and ClickBank will withhold larger amounts from your checks to cover the anticipated refund rates. Compare that to the copy for an ethical advertisement. You get real information about what you ARE going to get, so you know what to expect when you download the product. You don t get exaggerated claims about how you will feel, or perhaps how much money you will make, but you will get concrete information about what the product actually is and what benefits it provides. I personally would never recommend any product that I haven t purchased myself and found to be effective, and certainly not any product that doesn t provide up front information about exactly what it is. Second Rule: Loopholes and secrets are Blind too. If the advertising copy promises a newly discovered loophole , you should be very, very careful about the product. The Building Blocks Of Successful Leadership Essay 4 The building blocks of successful leadership pipeline Despite the benefits listed above, leadership succession remains a cause of concern for a number of organisations. DDI s Global Leadership Forecast from 2011 showed how only 38% of participating leaders said the quality of leadership within their organisation is either very good or excellent. More importantly, only 18% of HR professionals in the same survey felt the organisations have a strong bench to respond to future needs. In order to make the most of the leadership pipeline model, organisations must also focus on the following four elements. A simple system with buy in from the senior leadership team The focus should be on creating a clear and simple pipeline framework. The more complex the program, the more it risks failing at some point. If the organisation is able to reduce the bureaucracy required to run the system, then it ensures the system is based on clarity and effectiveness. One way to remove complexity from the system is by narrowing its focus. The processes used must be focused on the actual objectives and needs of the organisation. There s no reason to add broadness by creating a far reaching process when there is no need for it. The scope is at its best when it doesn t focus on every person within the organisation, but narrows the effort down towards a few key players. Furthermore, it s important to ensure the system is flexible enough to respond the changing needs within the organisation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Ocean Iron Fertilization By Oceanographer John Martin In recent years, ocean iron fertilization has become a topic of widespread debate in the scientific, political and legal communities. First conceptualized by oceanographer John Martin in the 1980s, ocean iron fertilization is a geoengineering technology that involves the intentional introduction of iron to the surface waters of high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) areas of the oceans in order to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplankton blooms mature over a period of thirty to sixty days and like terrestrial plants, they too absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. When the phytoplankton die, organic carbon material sinks to the ocean floor and atmospheric carbon dioxide is sequestered in the deep ocean for relatively long spans of time. By perpetuating the growth of carbon capturing phytoplankton blooms, ocean iron fertilization reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide, thereby mitigating the profound consequences of climate change. With the world s carbon dioxide levels on the rise and the effects of global warming becoming increasingly devastating, it is imperative now more than ever that every mitigation strategy be thoroughly explored. Although ocean iron fertilization may seem like a fairly simple method of sequestering carbon dioxide, there is in fact a plethora of issues linked to this mitigation strategy. The aim of this literature review is to examine and analyze some of the aspects that make ocean iron fertilization such a controversial method of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As Hester Prynne stood on the scaffold in the first scene, Dimmesdale could have confessed the truth to the whole town then, but chose not to. In Barn Burning the family loyalty theme is made evident throughout the story by bringing to light the dynamic in which the Snopes family is expected to act with emphasis on a strong, harsh father and a son with underlying values that differ from those of his family. The painting is oil on panel (75.9 x 60.6 cm) and is exemplary of the early Baroque period. The work depicts at the broadest level the suicide of the early Roman historical figure, Lucretia, following her rape c. 510 BC by Sextus Tarquinius, son of the last Roman king. It seems much more reasonable to posit that Lucretia s own nudity, especially in conjunction with her opulent, indeed, what is surely very expensive clothing (other depictions of Lucretia typically omit the inclusion of clothes altogether), is employed by Cleve to highlight Lucretia s shame amid her wealth and regal lifestyle, her clothes have been cleaved open, and she had been irrevocable hurt and humiliated. • 38. Analysis Of David Orr s The Principle Of Mastering Oneself An important point in which David Orr goes into considerable detail about is his six principles to rethink education. First, he ensures that all education is environmental education by every mean. In western education particularly, students are more often taught that they are apart of taught that they are apart from the natural world, or above it if you will. Leesa Fawcett enforces this idea on page 107 by stating: We have been taught to measure, manage, exploit the environment, to make money off of it on the back s of others near and far. We ve been encouraged to ignore it, to stay out of its messy dirty places. To ignore it is to ignore ourselves, our bodies, our forces and our relationships Fawcett implies that undeniably students are being taught that education is the way to success and success means exploiting the environment and ignoring the importance of sustainability. Next Orr uses the Greek term, Paideia to formulate his principle of mastering oneself is the goal of education and subjects are the tools of doing so (Orr, 2004, pg. 9). The current education system looks at specializing in one particular subject, and being really knowledgeable in that subject alone is what education strives for. However, one simply cannot just study one specific subject with no reflection on others, because that is what aids one in formulating their own ideas and understandings of not only that subject but their position in the world as well. Conrad through his writing demonstrates how light and Darkness does not always hold rigid values. In Conrad s narrative, the traditional values of light and darkness is not upheld, it can be seen how light can be used to emphasize evil while Darkness or black can be a sign of purity. The motif of light and darkness are present throughout. In his narrative of the ship Marlow refers to Europe as one of the dark places of the earth. In this quote Darkness is not representative of evil, but instead of the uncivilized state in which Europe used to be before being brought to the light which can be inferred to represent civilization. For example, when Marlow refers to the explorers who were men enough to face the darkness it is in reference to courageous explorers of the past who dare to explore the unknown. Civilized men of the past went on these expeditions to find wealth and a name for themselves in history. Conrad uses Darkness to represent the unknown in this context. Marlow refers to light being like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. This quote use light as a simile of life, and of how short it can be.
