Role of Appearance in the Hiring Process
Looks and appearance have always dominated Hollywood culture and the actors and actresses that
play roles in movies; also the popularity contest among teens in high school. Bulimia and anorexia
plague women and men throughout the United States. Today s society is dominated by the obsession
of appearances. But how far has this fixation gone? Has this Hollywood mentality taken over the
otherwise standard way of running a business and the process of hiring one s employees in a way not
determined by weight? For a country becoming one of the fattest countries in the world and a country
based on equal opportunities for all, the collision of these two topics is inevitable. According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She says, obese persons are stereotyped as being lazy, unintelligent, unsuccessful, and lacking in self
discipline. These harmful assumptions leave a person exposed to prejudice and discrimination. Puhl
states that years of research reveal that obese employees are less likely to be hired, less likely to be
promoted, and paid less than thinner employees, even with identical qualifications, education,
credentials, and job performance. She states that discrimination increases as weight gain increases.
Puhl reveals that overweight adults are twelve times more likely, obese adults are thirty seven times
more likely, and severely obese adults are one hundred times more likely to report employment
discrimination compared to normal weight respondents. Despite these countless occurrences of weight
discrimination, it is not illegal to discriminate on the basis of weight. Some employees have filed
lawsuits, mostly unsuccessful, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Puhl wishes to make
this act extend to those who are discriminated on because of their weight. An example of a lawsuit
based on weight came up in May, 2010 in Michigan (where it is illegal to discriminate based on
weight) from Cassandra Smith an employee at Hooters. Smith, who weighs 132 pounds, was told to
either lose weight in the next thirty days or she

Professional Learning Community Analysis
Professional Learning Community is not a term I would use to describe my school. The textbook
describes Professional Learning Communities as, ...one that promotes and values learning as an
ongoing, active collaborative process with dynamic dialogue by teachers, students, staff, principal,
parents, and the school community to improve the quality of learning and life within the school
(Roberts Pruitt, 2009 p.6). Based on that description alone, as a school we lack the basic components
of having a collaborative process with dialogue from the teachers, staff, and principal with the focus
on improving the quality of learning. Given all of the research findings and positive reviews on the
benefits of implementing Professional Learning Communities ... Show more content on

Some teachers are naturally hesitant to try new things, but I present the program as a trial run, the
teachers know that if we implement something that s not working we will examine steps to fix it
together. My principal does a great job with this, she listens to the teacher s ideas or suggestions and
will find solutions to any problem. Next, I asked, What are some benefits and challenges of PLCs?
Ms. Alexander paused and thought for a moment, the benefits are that teachers work together with a
purpose, they talk about student learning, and the teachers share the same vision. The challenge is
maintaining consistency across the board and motivating every teacher to stay committed. I have
witnessed the challenge with maintaining consistency on a few occasions at my school. For instance,
teachers were randomly grouped together for a teambuilding activity, in which teachers had to share
with their group members common challenges they face every school year. The group members then
developed a short list of tips or strategies that the teacher could use to remedy whatever challenges
they were facing. As

Parenthood And Its Effects On The United States
Planned Parenthood There is an ongoing argument about the funding of Planned Parenthood in the
United States. There are many reasons that some people do not want to fund it. One of those reasons is
because Planned Parenthood offers abortions to women. There are people who believe that these
operations should be shut down to rid our country of abortions. However, Planned Parenthood offers
much more than just abortions in their clinics. Planned Parenthood should be funded because of the
examinations and resources they provide, the education they give, and because it is a low income
health center.
Planned Parenthood offers access to many important health examinations, procedures, treatments and
medications. They offer breast cancer and cervical cancer exams. They test for STI s, HPV and UTI s
to name a few. All of these tests and exams are preventative actions to not only see if someone has a
health issue, but also to prevent health issues. They provide birth control to women who are not ready
to have children. They also offer abortions. However, Planned Parenthood has decreased the number
of abortions per year overall, including Vermont where Title X was passed to fund operations such as
Planned Parenthood. This is because Planned Parenthood offers birth control therefore preventing
unwanted pregnancies which may have ended in abortion (Zoppo 497). It is also important to note that
Federal funding of Planned Parenthood does not fund abortions except for cases of rape,

Differences Between Arcite And Palamon
In Geoffrey Chaucer s Canterbury Tales he depicts a short story, The Knight s Tale , describing the
lives two young cousins named Arcite and Palamon. These two men are from the kingdom of Thebes,
which was under the rule of Creon, until it was defeated by Theseus, Duke of Athens. Arcite and
Palamon are found and brought back to Athens to be imprisoned for the remainder of their lives. This
short story depicts the tale of the fight between Arcite and Palamon over a beautiful woman, Emily.
Although, while some things are similar about them, there are also numerous differences. In The
Knight s Tale , Arcite and Palamon share the same background, love for Emily, and the feeling of luck,
while how they perceive Emily, their location, and their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

goddess, / but my guess is that she is in truth Venus. (243 244) Palamon sees Emily as the goddess of
Venus, while on the other hand, Arcite sees her as a human woman. Arcite tells Palamon, You love a
holy deity; / I love a created human being. (300 301) The cousins disagree over if Emily should be
loved as a human or worshiped as a goddess. Another difference between them is the location in
which they end up. Arcite becomes free, away from the sight of Emily, but able to capture her with an
army. Palamon stays imprisoned, able to stay in sight of Emily, but no way to get to her. Arcite solves
his problem by sneaking into the castle as a working man but his true identity is discovered by
Palamon and they intend to duel over Emily. Before the fight Arcite and Palamon each pray different
prayers to different gods. Arcite prays to the goddess Venus that he will win Emily s love, and
Palamon prays to the god Mars that he will win the war over Emily. In the end both of their prayers
are answered, but Aricte dies shortly after the fight and Palamon ends up marrying Emily years

Catcher in the Rye Archetypal Analysis
INTRODUCTION Jerome David Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye, is a work of fiction and a tragic
comedy. It is an interesting and controversial novel. Though controversial, the novel appealed to a
great number of people. It was a hugely popular bestseller and general critical success. I chose this
novel because of the negative status it has with parents, teachers, and school. I wanted to discover
what the roots of this controversy are. The main character, Holden Caulfield, tells about his life before
and after he was kicked out from Pencey Prep. The novel was told in first person through the eyes of
the narrator, Holden. He recalls the events as a series of flashbacks placing the setting of the story in
his mind. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maybe Holden s alienation is the cause of most of his pains. Just like the character in the movie, The
Good Girl , wherein Tom Worther is a loner like Holden. Holden s loneliness was a more concrete
manifestation of his alienation. It is both a source of great pain and a source if his security. And so,
Holden left school planning to spend some time on his own in New York City, where he lives. On the
train to New York, Holden meets a mother of his fellow Pencey student. Though he thinks that this
student is a complete bastard , he tells a woman made up stories about her son. He lied to the woman.
But lying to others is also a kind of phoniness, right? A type of deception that indicates insensitivity or
even cruelty. Holden proves that he is just guilty of phoniness as the people he criticizes. The Road of
Trials When Holden arrives New York, he tried to call several people but for various reasons he
decided against it. Holden doesn t seem to know what to do in New York since he is three days earlier
as expected by his parents. So he rode a cab and he asked the cab driver where the ducks in Central
Park go when the lagoon freezes, but his question annoys the driver. He turned around and looked at
me like I was a madman What re ya tryna do, bud? He said. Kid me? This quotation is Holden s
conversation with the cab driver. I think Holden is being prejudged by the driver. Holden only want to
know where the ducks go and he is just interested to

A Meta-Analysis of the Impacts of Soy Milk, Skim Milk, and...
Five studies were found that coincide with the study selection criteria for on the effects of fermented
milk on cholesterol levels. Although some studies do not agree, a consensus can still be reached. Five
studies were found that agree consuming fermented milk products helps to lower cholesterol levels. Of
these studies Agerbaek et al., (1995) conducted a six week study on fifty eight healthy, non obese
males with normal cholesterol levels, all were age forty four. Participants were randomly placed in
either the fermented milk or placebo group; the placebo consisted of milk cultured with non living
bacteria and the fermented milk was fermented with E. faecium and two strains of S. termophilus.
Participants drank 200 ml per day of either fermented or placebo milk. The diet of each individual was
not altered at any time during the study. After six weeks, total cholesterol was significantly reduced by
14.3 mg/dL while the placebo had no significant change. LDL cholesterol levels had a 10% reduction,
a 16.24 mg/dL decrease while HDL cholesterol levels were unchanged. Agerbaek et al., (1995)
determined that fermented milk should significantly decrease total cholesterol and LDL levels in
middle aged men.
A study by Anderson and Gilliland (1999) came to the conclusion that fermented milk lowered total
cholesterol levels by 2.4%, LDL by 2.6% and HDL by 3.9%. The study was conducted over a three
week period with twenty females and nine males all with hypercholesterolemia. All

In my Summer Reading Essay, I see many skills I could improve on and many things that I need to
continue in further essays. The first thing I struggled with was MLA format, specifically the heading,

When rewriting my essay, I will double check to make sure I include the proper format; I can access

techniques including underlining the title of the novel, and center the title of the paper. I practiced

Capote s Narrative Voice
Throughout the novel, Capote appoints several narrative voices. For example, in the first paragraph
within lines 1 12, Capote is speaking himself with the use of third person narration. During this
paragraph, he describes the setting of the novel and uses imagery to portray its scenery. Within his
description of Holcomb, Kansas, the town is perceived as quiet and lonesome, where nothing out of
the ordinary occurs. In this section he speaks in a calm tone, creating a calm setting, which is ironic
due to all of the chaos that arises in it. Another narrative voice, on page 66, is spoken by Alfred
Stoecklein, a man who lived close to the Clutter family. Within this passage, he is talking about how
terrifying it was to assimilate to the trauma that

Wind Power and Wildlife Issues in Kansas
Remember in Wizard of Oz how Dorothy was swept away by a tornado, and how tornados are
massive wind storms. Well, it is no wonder they took the setting in Kansas. Kansas has been ranked
third in the nation for its potential wind resources (Wind Power and Wildlife Issues in Kansas). Wind
turbines have been placed all around Kansas, gathering wind to produce energy. Truth is it s causing
problems for animals and farmers. A great deal of biodiversity is being taken place throughout the
wildlife. Unhappy farmers complain about their land space and the effects it has on their farms. A
person would never know about these issues though, as far as they know, Kansas is helping produce
productive energy through the wind. If people are not familiar ... Show more content on

When companies wanted the turbines to be built, it opens up about 100 150 jobs for people. These
include the roads leading to the turbines, turbine foundations, construction of the turbines and then
hooking to the electrical collection systems. After this whole process is completed, 8 9 full time
employees oversee day to day operations and maintenance for the turbines. Kansas is ranked 5th for
the number of wind related jobs. Because of the energy the wind turbines create, it saved the capital
investment over $5 billion. The farmers make money off these turbines because the companies pay
them for placing the towers on their land. Farmers in all are making around $8,000,000 off land lease
payments a year. Not only are wind turbines making big bucks and big energy, but they are safe for the
environment! Generating wind power creates no emissions and uses virtually no water! About 2
billion gallons of water per year are being saved from the wind farms and turbines in Kansas. The
wind power installed in Kansas will avoid over 5.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually,
which is the equivalent of taking over 990,000 cars off the road. Another positive of the wind turbines
effecting the environment is how much it reduces nonrenewable energy. Wind energy does not get rid
of natural resources and renews every day as the earth cools and heats. The turbines only

The Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, And Frog
Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, and Frog
All organisms have different digestive systems, respiratory systems, and circulatory systems. They all
need to digest their food, breathe, and circulate their blood, but how do they do it? You will learn how
the Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, and Frog do those things, and what the similarities and
differences are. First of all, the human body, crayfish, earthworm, and frog all have many similarities
and differenced about how their digestive system works. They all eat their food through their mouths
and the food then travels into the esophagus. The esophagus prepares the food for further digestion.
The food in the esophagus then travels in the frog, crayfish, and human body s stomach. The
earthworm doesn t have a stomach, but it has a crop that serves as a storage stomach. Once the food is
in the stomach, something different happens for each organism. The food in the crayfish travels to the
digestive gland which produces digestive substances and from which the absorption of nutrients
occurs. The same thing occurs in a frog and the human body, but instead of a digestive gland it is
moved into a small intestine. In the earthworm, the food goes from the stomach to the gizzard, which
uses stones that the earthworm eats to grind the food completely. After it is moved into the digestive
gland, small intestine, or gizzard, the food is mostly digested. The earthworm and human body s food
is now moved into the larger intestine, where it absorbs water and any remaining nutrients. The frogs
food is stored in something like a large intestine, but it is called the gallbladder. The crayfish only has
on intestine. After going through all this, the undigested material leaves through the anus, or for a frog,
it is called the cloaca. Secondly, the human body, crayfish, earthworm, and frog also have many
similarities and differenced of how their respiratory system works. The crayfish respiratory system is
the least complex. Crayfish have gills, which are used to release carbon dioxide and to pick up
oxygen, by having a constant flow of blood. Frogs consist of nostrils and larynx, which opens up two
lungs. The walls of the lungs are filled with capillaries. Capillaries are

Analysis Of The Book Malcolm Gladwell
When thinking of successful people you automatically think about how hard people have worked to be
successful. In the Outliers book Malcolm Gladwell argues that we should look at the world that
surrounds successful people. For instance their culture, family, experiences, and their upbringing.
Gladwell has made an interesting argument about how people become successful. In this paper, I will
be talking about how Bradley Byrne, US Representative for Alabama became successful using some
information from Gladwell s arguments.
Gladwell wants to convince readers that different kinds of explanations of success don t work, people
rise from nothing. It really makes a difference where and when people grew up. He says, it s not

For the majority of Byrne s adult life, he was a democrat. During his political career, Byrne has served
on the Alabama State School Board. Being a chancellor of the Alabama Department of Postsecondary
Education, he served as the chief executive officer of Alabama s two year college system. The system
was full of many problems. It needed many changes to return to the important mission of educating
students and preparing them for the workforce.
Bradley s efforts have been very successful. Working with a dedicated team, the two year college
system was restored and the ongoing effort to serve students and the people of Alabama has been
refocused to its proper goals. In his role as Chancellor, Bradley also served as Chairman of the State
Workforce Planning Council. He oversaw all of Alabama s workforce development efforts. This gives
him an understanding of the state s ability to expand the workforce by encouraging a business climate
that creates good jobs.
In 2013 Byrne was elected to congress. In Congress, Byrne thinks of himself as an effective legislator

Procurator Misconduct
A male pointer crossbreed was found in a bin in Dundonald Street last April 15, Friday. He was so
malnourished and badly dehydrated that he had to be put down after being rescued by Scottish SPCA
officers.
When news about the dog s ordeal became public, there was a resounding demand for justice.
Following an investigation, the Scottish SPCA now has two women in custody, and are said to be
reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
The two females, according to inspector Clare Anderson, will be reported for alleged offences under
the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 . The violation is directly related to abandonment
and unnecessary suffering of a dog.
Under Scottish criminal law, a Procurator Fiscal acts on the authority of the Lord Advocate, which is
one of the two Law Officers who head up the Procurator Fiscal Service and the Crown Office in
Scotland. The Procurator Fiscal Deputes, on the other hand, acts on the behalf of the Procurator Fiscal.

If evidence is enough to prosecute, the Procurator Fiscal Depute will then decide which court the
prosecution will take place. For least serious cases, dealing with them through a Fiscal Fine may be
enough. Minor road traffic offences, however, will be prosecuted by the Justice of the Peace Court.
Prosecution of more serious crimes are done in the Sheriff Court, and the most serious crimes in the
High Court.
If strong evidence of animal cruelty points to the two women arrested in connection with the incident,
the might be tried in any of the courts, depending on the gravity of their crime.

Cultural Relativism Is Not Ideal
Cultural Relativism is not Ideal
In The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, James Rachel s main argument is that cultural relativism is
not creditable, but the whole theory of what cultural relativists believe, isn t completely incorrect.
Cultural relativism is the theory that beliefs, activities, and most values are based on the person s
culture. In other words, right and wrong is different in each culture. I agree with James Rachel on his
view of cultural relativism because he has very good reasons for objecting the argument that cultural
relativists make. This paper will argue that James Rachel s opinion on cultural relativism is correct
and the assumptions that cultural relativist believe are incorrect.
Cultural Relativists believe in the cultural differences argument. This argument says:
1.Different cultures have different moral codes.
2.Therefore, there is no objective truth in morality. Right and wrong are only matters of opinion and
opinions vary from culture to culture (Rachel 21).
Rachel s considers the cultural differences argument for cultural relativism to be unsound. I agree with
her because it just is not logical for something to not have anything that is objectively true just
because people disagree on it. An example that stands out to me regards murder. If Society A agreed
on murder and society B disagreed on murder than the conclusion is not that there is no objective truth
on the matter. Murder is obviously wrong because if in a particular society

Vertical Expansion Essay
In the passages it is said that vertical expansion is something needed to be added to the way urban area
are constructed. So, the author uses facts, logical reasoning, and rhetorical devices to persuade an
audience that vertical expansion of urban areas is a good idea. First the author discussed some facts to
back up as to why vertical expanish is necessary in growing urban areas. For example; the larger our
population gets, the faster our growth accelerates, which means vertical expansion should be used in
order to accommodate the growing population. Or as the stated by the author this kind of outward
expansion is a problematic, antiquated model that we need to abandon for upward expansion. Another
one would be however, this expansion model hasn t been necessary since the glorious ... Show more

The author was being frank when they said it s no secret our population is growing. Obviously our
population is growing and will continue to grow so the issue is that where do we put those people
without consuming all our natural resources. They also used imagery to help their audience understand
vertical expansion can improve our standard of living. So picture your favorite city; now picture your
favorite city, but this time, picture it in the future with the population doubled. By making their
readers picture their favorite dity it really helps to grasp the concept that we need to up the
architecture of homes in urban areas. There was also a pinch of pathos in the passage; it s rather scary
enigma: we expand our cities because our population is growing, yet we decrease our ability to sustain
ourselves by doing so. Thus vertical expansion will permit for a more sustainable way for the
population to thrive in the continuous development of the world. The author uses facts, logical
reasoning, and rhetorical devices to persuade an audience that vertical expansion of urban areas is a

Analysis Of Richard Rodriguez s A Stranger And Strange...
Comparative Analysis
Over the past month, we have been studying the concept of reading and writing in different
communities. To assess this, we have read two different texts. Richard Rodriguez s the achievement of
desire , from his autobiography Hunger of Memory ; and Lucille McCarthy s A Stranger in Strange
Lands: A College Student Writing across the Curriculum from Research in the Teaching of English .
Both answer key questions regarding what it takes to become a great reader and writer, however, from
the reading that I have done, each one only answers one part of the question. Rodriguez s main focus
is in the aspect of reading, whereas McCarthy mainly focuses on the writing portion. Both do a decent
job of analyzing and putting forth a view of how they believe a person can best perform in these
environments. This then allows us to use their concepts and create our own version, based on their
points of view. But why should we care? Most people at this level of academia will have developed a
system of writing that works for them, and will have a difficult time breaking from it if they re process
doesn t meet the criteria that Rodriguez, and McCarthy put forth. The reason it s so important is
because of implications these ideas have. Both authors put forth concepts that are indirectly related to
one another and that are highly beneficial to all who will apply them. They will force you to conform
to new environments in order to succeed, this in turn will make you more

Identity Theory Of Social Class
Statement of the Problem Identity is a powerful force that shapes the way individuals interact with the
world (Burke Reitzes, 1981). As a result, scholars have devoted much time toward understanding how
identities such as gender, race, and sexual orientation influence the human condition (Farr, Forssell,
Patterson, 2010; Kerr Multon, 2015; Smith, Bowman, Hsu, 2007). However, among this growing body
of literature, the study of social class as an identity is relatively scarce (Ostrove Cole, 2003). Rather
than examining social class as an identity, many scholars have instead chosen to treat it as a
demographic variable (Aries, 2008; Aries Berman, 2013; Lubrano, 2004; Mantsios, 2007; Park
Denson, 2013). Perhaps this has occurred because social class is such an elusive concept to describe
(Lareau, 2008; Ostrove Cole, 2003). Although scholars generally agree that there are distinct
differences among the speech patterns, mannerisms, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Identity theory is a theoretical framework that posits that individuals have many different identities
that intersect, such as social class, race, and gender (Burke Tully, 1977; Michalski Helmig, 2008;
Stryker, 1968; Stryker, 1987; Stryker, 2008). However, identity theory also acknowledges that these
varying identities tend to exist hierarchically (Stryker Burke, 2000). Therefore, identities that are more
central to a person s sense of self are more salient. That is, salient identities tend to be higher on a
person s salience hierarchy than other identities. For example, a person may identify as a heterosexual
woman, an African American, a Protestant, and a mother. However, if after considering all of these
identities, she were to indicate that her identity of being a mother was the most important to her sense
of self, and then researchers could infer that her mother identity would be set highest on her salience

Analysis Of Night By Elie Wiesel And First They Killed My...
When a person recalls an emotional situation, it can be difficult for them to explain to others exactly
how they felt when the event occurred. Authors attempt to communicate these tough experiences using
a variety of literary devices which include symbolism, irony, and theme. Night by Elie Wiesel, and
First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung are two pieces of literature that recollect the memories of
the authors during traumatic events; Night is set during the Holocaust, while the latter is set in
Cambodia during the harsh rule of Pol Pot. The literary devices present in each text are utilized by
Wiesel and Ung in unique and similar ways to communicate the extent of what they felt . Both novels
utilized symbols in order to relay importance to the readers, particularly during the times when the
speakers viewed something horrific. In First They Killed My Father, Ung attempts to symbolize Pol
Pot, her father, and even the clothing of the Khmer Rouge. She almost describes Pol Pot as being a
supernatural all seeing eye type figure one she became set on trying to kill later on in the future as
vengeance. Her father represented the glue and power that held Loung s family together once he had
died, his children (Loung s brothers) had continued to try and fill in his shoes by providing food, while
Loung had continued to be inspired by him. The clothing of the Khmer Rouge became a symbol of the
regime, along with all the horror it had created. Indeed, Loung noticed that she could

Catholic Health West in a better position to grow nationally and coordinate care in a changing
marketplace under health care reform. One goal of the strategic plan was to triple the size of the

on describing a peer support group that will help firefighters with this disorder. Having a support

These levels are well laid out for people who are looking to research or learn about to handle this
disorder properly. Many do not know that this disorder could actually contribute to high risk health
issues, for example, chronic pain, muskoskeletal problems, and cardiovascular disease. The fire
service needs to increase the amount of research, then perhaps fire departments can reduce the amount
of personnel that are affected from this disorder. Firefighters could be affected with symptoms that
happen right away or over a long period. From this, there needs to be some sort of support system
established, firefighters might be able to relate easier way, if the support person has a back in or

Biomechanical Intervention Case Study
1) Many individuals have UE paresis after experiencing a stroke. This is why occupational therapy
service is needed; since they address many of the deficits, including stroke related motor impairment
of the UE. However, despite improved UE functional capacity, UE performance may remain severely
limited after stroke (Doman, Waddell, Bailey, Moore, Lang, 2016). There is a difference between the
function and the performance. For example, many individual after rehab are able to have movement

teeth and washing their face. So as an OT you must create an intervention that allows the client to
regain both the movements and complete their everyday performance. Like Many OT s I would first

Essay on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Case Study
Normal Anatomy and Physiology of Motor Function
The two components of the central nervous system (CNS) are the brain and the spinal cord.
Communication between the brain and the spinal cord happens through motor neurons, which are
nerve cells that enable motor movement. Each motor neuron is made up of a cell body, which holds all
the cell components, dendrites which send information it receives to the cell body, and an axon which
sends nerve impulses to the muscle (Porth Matfin, 2009). As electrical impulses are sent through the
motor neuron, it stimulates the muscle fibers in the body to move. This is the process in which motor
function happens. Therefore, the basic abilities to breathe, speak, swallow, walk and button a shirt are
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The manifestations of ALS are caused by the location of motor neuron death. When upper motor
neurons die, the symptoms include problems controlling fine movements, spasms, dysphagia,
dysphonia and dysarthria (Porth Matfin, 2009). Manifestations of lower motor neuron destruction
include fasciculations, weakness, muscle atrophy, and hyporeflexia (Porth Matfin, 2009, p. 1284).
Patients with early signs of ALS usually complain of feeling weak on one side, which is due to the
slowing of electrical impulses to that group of muscles (Ignatavicius Workman, 2010). Since the
impulses are slowed, they are not receiving adequate electrical stimulation to move and the person
feels weak. As the disease progresses, all the motor neurons die and are not regenerated so, the patient
is left paralyzed, losing the ability to speak, swallow and breathe (Ignatavicius Workman, 2010).
A distinctive characteristic of ALS is that although the motor neurons die, the brain, cognitive
functions and sensory neurons stay intact (Porth Matfin, 2009). This makes the disease especially
devastating because patients become trapped inside their dying body, with a fully alert mind, but are
unable to move. It is not known what causes the exact death of the motor neurons in the body, but five
percent to 10% of cases are familial; the others are believed to be sporadic (Porth Matfin, 2009, p.

Unethical Practices For Business Success Essay
We have heard the well used phrase, When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and have applied it well as
we travel among other countries and cultures, with great success. However, in business, it does not
prove to be as much of a reliable phrase to live by. General practices of businesses can sometimes
prove to be unethical, even though they are quite legal, or were simply unethical in their conduct and
operations, with no remorse. Unethical practices by businesses have often been a catalyst in their
demise. Hence, for business success, we might say, When in business, practicing integrity is good
business, because if it is adhered to, it can be a recipe for success.
According to an article, Unethical Rationalizations and Misconceptions, which was published by
ethicsalarms.com, there are countless excuses and reasons people justify unethical practices, whether
they are legal or illegal. Every form of excuse, It s done all the time, to It s always been done this way,
to Everybody accepts it, to Nobody s complained before, to It s too late to change now, to No harm, no
foul, to name a few. These justifications are clearly evident that the ABCDs of ethical decision making
have been bypassed.
When operating a business, it is more profitable to consider every aspect of the outcome of the
decisions that we make. We need to be aware of the facts of the entire situation. Who will it impact
most and to what degree? How do I feel about the decision I am going to make?

Compare And Contrast Descartes And Pyrrhonian Skepticism
Pyrrhonian skeptics and Descartes s response to skepticism are two interesting reads that make one
curious. Pyrrhonian skepticism has a goal which is the suspension of judgment and tranquility, while
Descartes brings reason and doubt to the senses about what one perceives and feels. This essay will
inform about the Pyrrhonian skeptic and the response Decartes has to the skeptic views.
There are two philosophers, Phyrrho and Sextus Empiricus. Phyrrho lived around 360 270 BCE in his
hometown of Ellis, a Greek city state. He traveled with Alexander the Great on the latter s expedition

The Academics were criticized because in asserting that doctrine it seemed to be making a claim to

is characterized by a suspension of judgment about questions that go beyond the way things appear.
They believe that they are searches and their disposition is that not one thing over the other is
necessarily correct. This causes them to withhold their suspense of judgment. They firmly believe that
there is no true way of knowing whether something is right or wrong, they keep searching for the

it is in our opinion and personal truths that we develop desires, painful efforts, good and bad, fear, and
disappointment. To accept everything as is, will bring bliss and peace of mind. The Pyrrhonian skeptic

Information technology has undoubtedly become an indispensable part of our day to day lives. Both

handling huge volumes of data, as being highly significant in the modern world. Even though both
Nicholas Carr and Erik Brynjolfsson are in agreement to the omnipresence of IT, their perception of

Carr which believes that the strategic value of IT has reduced. For all the inventions that had

Most of the companies invest in new technologies when the existing versions can very well serve the
purpose. Hence emphasis should be given to effectively managing and maintaining the existing
technology rather than unnecessarily investing on more technology. IT can be replicated very easily
and is subject to rapid deflation making it a bad investment. It is always better to wait rather than rush
to buy a new technology since a better version is always available before the newly purchased one is
ready to use. Also it is very difficult to turn temporary technological advantages to enduring
positioning ones. Hence more emphasis should be given in fixing the vulnerabilities rather than
investing on a soon to be outdated technology. I agree with Carr that the companies in order to achieve
a better return should manage risks and costs meticulously rather than resorting to seeking aggressive
advantage. Also we have indeed spent much more than necessary on IT that the available technology
is much advanced than what is required in the most cases.
Brynjolfsson s four paradigms for innovation, i.e., measurement, experimentation, sharing and
replication, in my opinion, put forth a best practice that can be adopted to achieve innovation. This
model can be replicated by companies to achieve a desired effect. It has in turn been discussed by Carr
that a best practice can be

Heterosexuality In The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight, a fictional film, portrays the havoc that takes place on the citizens of Gotham City
as Batman, also known as Bruce Wayne, tries to fight injustice while moral dilemmas are being

ideological, or economic influence exerted by a dominant group (Dr. Burke). This includes the Joker s
challenging the hegemony, the heroic face, Batman s heterosexuality and male power identity, and
Rachel Dawes s assisting Bruce s hegemony in anyway that she can. The Dark Knight is not just a tale

explains why Batman reasserts his authority by beating the Joker, a character who seemingly has a

illustrates the dominance of the male and heterosexual hegemony in the society according to the

their body by breathing air, drinking water, eating food, and touching soil that contains it. Another
major way people have cyanide enter their system, is through smoking cigarettes and inhaling the
smoke. However, there are ways to avoid cyanide. People can protect themselves from cyanide. The
first way is by leaving the area that cyanide was released, and going outdoors to a place with cleaner
air. If it is released outdoors and the person can not leave the area, the person must stay as low to the
ground as possible. This is because cyanide is less dense than the air, causing it to go upwards in the
atmosphere. If it is released indoors, leave the building. All these instructions are from the Office of
Public Health Preparedness and Response (2013). Cyanide does have the antidote Sodium Nitrite

the kids specializing in the sports. Children s goal orientation, learning, and worry is directly

1. Using examples from the topics in the lectures and article presentations we have had so far, identify
and explore a unifying theme of this material.
A unifying theme of the material thus far is skeletal muscle adaptation. We have looked at the
adaptations of resistance exercise using body builders as our prime example compared to adaptations
in endurance athletes such as marathon runners as well as sprinters. In the article presentations, we
have also looked at diet manipulation and timing of exercise (once a day vs twice daily) and the
effects on training responses. We know that the load and ATP demand play a

Election Day After President Of The United States
Election Day is when Americans everywhere get to cast their vote for the next President of the United
States. However, Americans don t directly vote for President. So, what s happening on Election Day
then? It is a bit complicated due to a system involving something called the Electoral College.
The Electoral College is the collection of 538 votes that determine who will be the next President of
the United States of America. The number 538 comes from the number of Representatives, 438, plus
the number Senators, 100, all of which make up Congress. These votes, however, are not given
directly to the citizens; they are divvied up amongst the states. Every state, no matter how populous,
receives a minimum of three votes in the Electoral College. The remaining votes are then given out in
proportion to the states population (Walenta, 2010).
On Election Day, when citizens go to vote, they are not actually voting for who they want to be the
next President. They are actually only deciding who the electors will be and telling them how they
want them to vote ( Electoralvote.com ). If a candidate wins the majority of the votes in a state, no
matter how minor, he will obtain all of that state s votes. For example, Florida has 29 votes in the
Electoral College, if one candidate were to receive just 51% of Florida s vote, he would receive all of
the 29 votes, even when 49% of the state did not vote for him.
There are many controversial topics regards the Electoral College and how it

The Effect of World War I on Britain Economically and...
The Effect of World War I on Britain Economically and Socially The outbreak of the war in August
1914 produced immediate changes. It is often said that war is the locomotive of history that is what
drives it along. Certainly the First World War helped to produce major changes in British government,
society, the economy and industrial relations. The war produced political turmoil. In 1915 Prime
Minister Asquith formed a coalition government, and the following year he was replaced as premier
by Lloyd George, who gave a new impetus to the direction of the war. He believed in greater state
intervention built upon the abandonment of laissez faire. The powers of the state had grown

Electric power was used more than ever before. The removal of so many skilled workers had initially
threatened an economic collapse but had in fact stimulated the much needed mechanisation. The
efficiency of agriculture had also increased, with the widespread introduction of the tractor. Such
changes however, although at a slower pace, might have occurred even without the war. The same
cannot be said for the high numbers of casualities incurred. A productive section of the workforce had
been lost. In addition Britain still had to pay the financial costs of the war. Massive amounts of money
had been borrowed and still had to be repaid. Valuable overseas markets had been lost. During the war
massive investment in the staple industries had taken place. But once the war was over the demand of
these products fell. The decline of the staple industries was also the main reason for the bitter
industrial relations which developed in post war Britain. During the war actually industrial relations
had improved. Trade unions reacted patriotically to the outbreak of was and a spirit of collaboration
developed between them and the government. The Treasury Agreement was signed in 1915 which
specified that unions involved in vital war work would not strike. In return they were promised that
the old arrangements would be resumed after the war. It was only a voluntary agreement, but in July

Epic Hero Journey
The Journey of Epic Heroes Every epic hero is the personification of goodness and strength. Similar to
Odysseus in The Odyssey and the Iliad, he is fighting for his people and for good. An epic hero is not
just someone who has heroic characteristics, but also someone who embodies the goodness and virtues
of their writers time and society. In the modern era they are mainly characters with crazy powers and
stories. However, not in the past where heroes were people who fought for their writers country or for
glory. The heroes were not merely people of great virtue and honor, but also people that the youth of
their nation looked to as heroes and legends. In the past 50 years to present day, in culture, heroes are
separate from legends, they are strictly for entertainment unlike legends, which are more
mythological. Superman, Captain America, and John F. Kennedy all have similar traits to epic heroes,
such as Odysseus, due to their compassion and perseverance through long journeys. ... Show more

He is a prime example of someone who took a journey, beat impossible tasks, and defeated all of his
enemies. Odysseus went to Troy in order to fight and defeat the Trojans. The war, lasting ten years,
took a considerable amount of determination from Odysseus. On his way back from war, he found
himself facing many adversities. After ten more years on the seas, all of his companions died from the
journey and he was the last one standing. Odysseus is a hero that goes through something
tremendously difficult and comes out standing tall. He is a symbol of strength and fortitude. Despite
how difficult the tasks, he was able to overcome numerous hardships. This more than anything else is

Persuasive Essay On Sodium Nitrite
It is important to eat healthy and have a nutrious balanced diet. There are many diet fads over the
years, low carb high protein diet. Paleo diet that requires you to eat what human ate in the Paleolithic
pirord. Then there are food to avoid and compounds that you should never have or they will
compromise your health. Monosodium glutamate, high fructose corn syrup and sodium nitrate all
depicted as poisoning our bodies. Sodium nitrites are found naturally in plants and Americans eat
vegetables every day without harm. A growing trend is to ban the use of sodium nitrite to keep our
food healthy, not knowing sodium nitrites is safe to eat as long as you don t overdose on it. Sodium

Sausage, ham, deli meats although have sodium nitrates are high in fat in what makes it unhealthy. We
shouldn t say foods high in fat and also have sodium nitrates as a reason to avoid sodium nitrate. Since
only 7% of the sodium nitrites we consume come from added sodium nitrate sources our consumption
from non natural source are very small. The processed meat eaten today contains about 80% less
nitrites than it did a few decades ago .(Gunnars) Meaning the food is a lot heathier then most people
think today, Some processed meats like bacon due to the cooking process of high heat cooking the
nitrates can turn into compounds called nitrosamines which is a carcinogen. So cooking bacon on
lower heat for longer can significantly reduce the formation of nitrosamines also the microwave is
been known as a safe way to cook bacon.
Who doesn t enjoy a BLT sandwich, beef jerky, hotdogs or a nice ham during the holidays, spinach,
lettuce and celery? What do all those have in common is the use of sodium nitrates to give the meats
its color and flavor all love and natural sodium nitrates found in vegetables. Sodium nitrates prevents
bacteria growth and can help to lower blood pressure. Yes there are some concerns and learning all the
facts can make sure you make an informed decision when it comes to skipping the ham on the next

The Sense Of Place By Jane Heaney
Also emanating from the sectarian subject is Heaney s etymological study of Northern Ireland s
landscape in order to transcend the contemporary political situation. In his lecture The Sense of Place
given in 1977, Heaney explains that according to John Montague, the whole Irish landscape is a
manuscript and Northern Ireland s history ensures an endless opportunity to treat the local landscape
and its terminology as such. Originally, one language was spoken here; Gaelic Irish. However,
resulting from plantations by English and Scottish settlers, Gaelic was infiltrated by their languages,
thus creating three different dialects. Heaney therefore maintains a linguistic equilibrium by remaining
faithful to the English language, as well as his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The terms boortree , bower tree and elderberry are used within the sonnet. Significantly, the boortree
is the Scottish derivative of the English elderberry . Heaney, like his northern compatriots refers to it
as a bower tree , reflecting the slight change the word was subjected to when used in Ireland by
planted settlers over the preceding centuries. Expanding further on this, Heaney claims to be an
etymologist of roots and graftings . Graftings means the joining of the tissues of plants and the use of
this term can be seen as referring to the adjoining of the two cultures in Northern

A Bad Idea Of Year-Round School
Most students enjoy summer vacation, but some educators feel that the summer break is too long and
that students do not retain information as easily when they return in the fall. Some people argue that
there should be year round schools, where there would by a 3 4 week break in the summer, a long
winter break, and a week off in the spring and fall. I disagree with those people. The biggest problem
with this schedule would be the summer break, it just isn t long enough. I believe year round school is
a bad idea because summer break is a time when students get to take a break, parents may not be able
to find a caretaker during the shorter breaks, and schools may not have sufficient funds. First of all,
students get their breath of fresh air in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some schools already have trouble being able to afford supplies and other commodities, such as food
and air conditioning, for students during the eight months that they are in school; imagine how much it
would cost a school if students went attended school during the hot, humid summer days. Not all
schools have a lot of money and struggle enough as it is, going to school longer and having shorter
breaks would cause schools to cut certain funds and maybe even get rid of certain programs to just be
able to pay for necessities that a school requires. In conclusion, year round school is an awful idea
because students actually look at summer break as a break, parents have plenty of stress on them
already, and some schools already have financial trouble. Rarely anyone thinks that year round school
is a good idea, so it would be easier for everyone if the idea was just gone for good. Going to school
year round would be stressful for everyone involved, and everyone involved already has enough stress
on them as it is. School, as it is now, works just fine and doesn t need to

Introduction
Cell fractionation is a very important procedure in cell biology and can be very useful for studying
different organelles. By fractionating, we mean separating or dividing the cell into different

A fraction that has high content of the specific organelle and low contamination by other organelles is
desired however a fraction with highly purified mitochondria is better even if the most mitochondria is
found in other fractions. The purity of mitochondrial fractions is usually determined by enzyme
marker detection assay(Hajek et al 2004). In our experiment we will use differential centrifugation to
isolate the mitochondria of cauliflower and then assay SDH activity using a fixed time assay. We will
then measure protein content in our fractions and calculate specific activity and total activity of our
fractions.
Materials and Methods
Mitochondrial Isolating
We used to florets from the cauliflower and disrupted the cell walls using a cold isolation buffer (0.3
M D mannitol, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2) and an abrasive, we then strained the homogenate
with cheesecloth into a centrifuge tube suppoerted by ice. The homogenate was then centrifuged at
600 g for 10 minutes at 4⁰C. The postnuclear supernatant was removed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for
30 minutes at 4⁰C. The post mitochondrial supernatant was removed and the mitochondrial pellet was
resuspended in a cold assay buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.01 M KCl, 0.005 M MgCl₂, 0.02 M

  • 2. Role of Appearance in the Hiring Process Looks and appearance have always dominated Hollywood culture and the actors and actresses that play roles in movies; also the popularity contest among teens in high school. Bulimia and anorexia plague women and men throughout the United States. Today s society is dominated by the obsession of appearances. But how far has this fixation gone? Has this Hollywood mentality taken over the otherwise standard way of running a business and the process of hiring one s employees in a way not determined by weight? For a country becoming one of the fattest countries in the world and a country based on equal opportunities for all, the collision of these two topics is inevitable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She says, obese persons are stereotyped as being lazy, unintelligent, unsuccessful, and lacking in self discipline. These harmful assumptions leave a person exposed to prejudice and discrimination. Puhl states that years of research reveal that obese employees are less likely to be hired, less likely to be promoted, and paid less than thinner employees, even with identical qualifications, education, credentials, and job performance. She states that discrimination increases as weight gain increases. Puhl reveals that overweight adults are twelve times more likely, obese adults are thirty seven times more likely, and severely obese adults are one hundred times more likely to report employment discrimination compared to normal weight respondents. Despite these countless occurrences of weight discrimination, it is not illegal to discriminate on the basis of weight. Some employees have filed lawsuits, mostly unsuccessful, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Puhl wishes to make this act extend to those who are discriminated on because of their weight. An example of a lawsuit based on weight came up in May, 2010 in Michigan (where it is illegal to discriminate based on weight) from Cassandra Smith an employee at Hooters. The textbook describes Professional Learning Communities as, ...one that promotes and values learning as an ongoing, active collaborative process with dynamic dialogue by teachers, students, staff, principal, parents, and the school community to improve the quality of learning and life within the school (Roberts Pruitt, 2009 p.6). Based on that description alone, as a school we lack the basic components of having a collaborative process with dialogue from the teachers, staff, and principal with the focus on improving the quality of learning. Some teachers are naturally hesitant to try new things, but I present the program as a trial run, the teachers know that if we implement something that s not working we will examine steps to fix it together. My principal does a great job with this, she listens to the teacher s ideas or suggestions and will find solutions to any problem. Next, I asked, What are some benefits and challenges of PLCs? Ms. Alexander paused and thought for a moment, the benefits are that teachers work together with a purpose, they talk about student learning, and the teachers share the same vision. The challenge is maintaining consistency across the board and motivating every teacher to stay committed. I have witnessed the challenge with maintaining consistency on a few occasions at my school. For instance, teachers were randomly grouped together for a teambuilding activity, in which teachers had to share with their group members common challenges they face every school year. The group members then developed a short list of tips or strategies that the teacher could use to remedy whatever challenges they were facing. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Parenthood And Its Effects On The United States Planned Parenthood There is an ongoing argument about the funding of Planned Parenthood in the United States. There are many reasons that some people do not want to fund it. One of those reasons is because Planned Parenthood offers abortions to women. There are people who believe that these operations should be shut down to rid our country of abortions. However, Planned Parenthood offers much more than just abortions in their clinics. Planned Parenthood should be funded because of the examinations and resources they provide, the education they give, and because it is a low income health center. Planned Parenthood offers access to many important health examinations, procedures, treatments and medications. They offer breast cancer and cervical cancer exams. They test for STI s, HPV and UTI s to name a few. All of these tests and exams are preventative actions to not only see if someone has a health issue, but also to prevent health issues. They provide birth control to women who are not ready to have children. They also offer abortions. However, Planned Parenthood has decreased the number of abortions per year overall, including Vermont where Title X was passed to fund operations such as Planned Parenthood. This is because Planned Parenthood offers birth control therefore preventing unwanted pregnancies which may have ended in abortion (Zoppo 497). It is also important to note that Federal funding of Planned Parenthood does not fund abortions except for cases of rape, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These two men are from the kingdom of Thebes, which was under the rule of Creon, until it was defeated by Theseus, Duke of Athens. Arcite and Palamon are found and brought back to Athens to be imprisoned for the remainder of their lives. This short story depicts the tale of the fight between Arcite and Palamon over a beautiful woman, Emily. Although, while some things are similar about them, there are also numerous differences. • 6. Catcher in the Rye Archetypal Analysis INTRODUCTION Jerome David Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye, is a work of fiction and a tragic comedy. It is an interesting and controversial novel. Though controversial, the novel appealed to a great number of people. It was a hugely popular bestseller and general critical success. I chose this novel because of the negative status it has with parents, teachers, and school. I wanted to discover what the roots of this controversy are. The main character, Holden Caulfield, tells about his life before and after he was kicked out from Pencey Prep. The novel was told in first person through the eyes of the narrator, Holden. He recalls the events as a series of flashbacks placing the setting of the story in his mind. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maybe Holden s alienation is the cause of most of his pains. Just like the character in the movie, The Good Girl , wherein Tom Worther is a loner like Holden. Holden s loneliness was a more concrete manifestation of his alienation. It is both a source of great pain and a source if his security. And so, Holden left school planning to spend some time on his own in New York City, where he lives. On the train to New York, Holden meets a mother of his fellow Pencey student. Though he thinks that this student is a complete bastard , he tells a woman made up stories about her son. He lied to the woman. But lying to others is also a kind of phoniness, right? A type of deception that indicates insensitivity or even cruelty. Holden proves that he is just guilty of phoniness as the people he criticizes. Five studies were found that coincide with the study selection criteria for on the effects of fermented milk on cholesterol levels. Although some studies do not agree, a consensus can still be reached. Five studies were found that agree consuming fermented milk products helps to lower cholesterol levels. Of these studies Agerbaek et al., (1995) conducted a six week study on fifty eight healthy, non obese males with normal cholesterol levels, all were age forty four. Participants were randomly placed in either the fermented milk or placebo group; the placebo consisted of milk cultured with non living bacteria and the fermented milk was fermented with E. faecium and two strains of S. termophilus. Participants drank 200 ml per day of either fermented or placebo milk. The diet of each individual was not altered at any time during the study. After six weeks, total cholesterol was significantly reduced by 14.3 mg/dL while the placebo had no significant change. LDL cholesterol levels had a 10% reduction, a 16.24 mg/dL decrease while HDL cholesterol levels were unchanged. Agerbaek et al., (1995) determined that fermented milk should significantly decrease total cholesterol and LDL levels in middle aged men. A study by Anderson and Gilliland (1999) came to the conclusion that fermented milk lowered total cholesterol levels by 2.4%, LDL by 2.6% and HDL by 3.9%. Because of the energy the wind turbines create, it saved the capital investment over $5 billion. The farmers make money off these turbines because the companies pay them for placing the towers on their land. Farmers in all are making around $8,000,000 off land lease payments a year. Not only are wind turbines making big bucks and big energy, but they are safe for the environment! Generating wind power creates no emissions and uses virtually no water! About 2 billion gallons of water per year are being saved from the wind farms and turbines in Kansas. The wind power installed in Kansas will avoid over 5.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is the equivalent of taking over 990,000 cars off the road. • 11. The Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, And Frog Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, and Frog All organisms have different digestive systems, respiratory systems, and circulatory systems. They all need to digest their food, breathe, and circulate their blood, but how do they do it? You will learn how the Human Body, Crayfish, Earthworm, and Frog do those things, and what the similarities and differences are. First of all, the human body, crayfish, earthworm, and frog all have many similarities and differenced about how their digestive system works. They all eat their food through their mouths and the food then travels into the esophagus. The esophagus prepares the food for further digestion. The food in the esophagus then travels in the frog, crayfish, and human body s stomach. The earthworm doesn t have a stomach, but it has a crop that serves as a storage stomach. Once the food is in the stomach, something different happens for each organism. The food in the crayfish travels to the digestive gland which produces digestive substances and from which the absorption of nutrients occurs. The same thing occurs in a frog and the human body, but instead of a digestive gland it is moved into a small intestine. In the earthworm, the food goes from the stomach to the gizzard, which uses stones that the earthworm eats to grind the food completely. After it is moved into the digestive gland, small intestine, or gizzard, the food is mostly digested. The earthworm and human body s food is now moved into the larger intestine, where it absorbs water and any remaining nutrients. The frogs food is stored in something like a large intestine, but it is called the gallbladder. The crayfish only has on intestine. After going through all this, the undigested material leaves through the anus, or for a frog, it is called the cloaca. Secondly, the human body, crayfish, earthworm, and frog also have many similarities and differenced of how their respiratory system works. The crayfish respiratory system is the least complex. Crayfish have gills, which are used to release carbon dioxide and to pick up oxygen, by having a constant flow of blood. Frogs consist of nostrils and larynx, which opens up two lungs. The walls of the lungs are filled with capillaries. Capillaries are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Cultural Relativism Is Not Ideal Cultural Relativism is not Ideal In The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, James Rachel s main argument is that cultural relativism is not creditable, but the whole theory of what cultural relativists believe, isn t completely incorrect. Cultural relativism is the theory that beliefs, activities, and most values are based on the person s culture. In other words, right and wrong is different in each culture. I agree with James Rachel on his view of cultural relativism because he has very good reasons for objecting the argument that cultural relativists make. This paper will argue that James Rachel s opinion on cultural relativism is correct and the assumptions that cultural relativist believe are incorrect. Cultural Relativists believe in the cultural differences argument. This argument says: 1.Different cultures have different moral codes. 2.Therefore, there is no objective truth in morality. Right and wrong are only matters of opinion and opinions vary from culture to culture (Rachel 21). Rachel s considers the cultural differences argument for cultural relativism to be unsound. I agree with her because it just is not logical for something to not have anything that is objectively true just because people disagree on it. An example that stands out to me regards murder. If Society A agreed on murder and society B disagreed on murder than the conclusion is not that there is no objective truth on the matter. Murder is obviously wrong because if in a particular society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To assess this, we have read two different texts. Richard Rodriguez s the achievement of desire , from his autobiography Hunger of Memory ; and Lucille McCarthy s A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing across the Curriculum from Research in the Teaching of English . Both answer key questions regarding what it takes to become a great reader and writer, however, from the reading that I have done, each one only answers one part of the question. Rodriguez s main focus is in the aspect of reading, whereas McCarthy mainly focuses on the writing portion. Both do a decent job of analyzing and putting forth a view of how they believe a person can best perform in these environments. This then allows us to use their concepts and create our own version, based on their points of view. But why should we care? Most people at this level of academia will have developed a system of writing that works for them, and will have a difficult time breaking from it if they re process doesn t meet the criteria that Rodriguez, and McCarthy put forth. The reason it s so important is because of implications these ideas have. • 17. Identity Theory Of Social Class Statement of the Problem Identity is a powerful force that shapes the way individuals interact with the world (Burke Reitzes, 1981). As a result, scholars have devoted much time toward understanding how identities such as gender, race, and sexual orientation influence the human condition (Farr, Forssell, Patterson, 2010; Kerr Multon, 2015; Smith, Bowman, Hsu, 2007). However, among this growing body of literature, the study of social class as an identity is relatively scarce (Ostrove Cole, 2003). Rather than examining social class as an identity, many scholars have instead chosen to treat it as a demographic variable (Aries, 2008; Aries Berman, 2013; Lubrano, 2004; Mantsios, 2007; Park Denson, 2013). Perhaps this has occurred because social class is such an elusive concept to describe (Lareau, 2008; Ostrove Cole, 2003). Identity theory is a theoretical framework that posits that individuals have many different identities that intersect, such as social class, race, and gender (Burke Tully, 1977; Michalski Helmig, 2008; Stryker, 1968; Stryker, 1987; Stryker, 2008). However, identity theory also acknowledges that these varying identities tend to exist hierarchically (Stryker Burke, 2000). Therefore, identities that are more central to a person s sense of self are more salient. That is, salient identities tend to be higher on a person s salience hierarchy than other identities. For example, a person may identify as a heterosexual woman, an African American, a Protestant, and a mother. However, if after considering all of these identities, she were to indicate that her identity of being a mother was the most important to her sense of self, and then researchers could infer that her mother identity would be set highest on her salience ... • 18. Analysis Of Night By Elie Wiesel And First They Killed My... When a person recalls an emotional situation, it can be difficult for them to explain to others exactly how they felt when the event occurred. Authors attempt to communicate these tough experiences using a variety of literary devices which include symbolism, irony, and theme. Night by Elie Wiesel, and First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung are two pieces of literature that recollect the memories of the authors during traumatic events; Night is set during the Holocaust, while the latter is set in Cambodia during the harsh rule of Pol Pot. The literary devices present in each text are utilized by Wiesel and Ung in unique and similar ways to communicate the extent of what they felt . Both novels utilized symbols in order to relay importance to the readers, particularly during the times when the speakers viewed something horrific. In First They Killed My Father, Ung attempts to symbolize Pol Pot, her father, and even the clothing of the Khmer Rouge. She almost describes Pol Pot as being a supernatural all seeing eye type figure one she became set on trying to kill later on in the future as vengeance. Her father represented the glue and power that held Loung s family together once he had died, his children (Loung s brothers) had continued to try and fill in his shoes by providing food, while Loung had continued to be inspired by him. The clothing of the Khmer Rouge became a symbol of the regime, along with all the horror it had created. Indeed, Loung noticed that she could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 2012 Catholic Health West changed their name to Dignity Health, ending their affiliation with the Catholic church. The transformation reflected a new approach for growth that would allow partnerships with non Catholic hospitals with shared values but fewer limitations over reproductive health care and other services. The transition was planned to place Catholic Health West in a better position to grow nationally and coordinate care in a changing marketplace under health care reform. • 24. Essay on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Case Study Normal Anatomy and Physiology of Motor Function The two components of the central nervous system (CNS) are the brain and the spinal cord. Communication between the brain and the spinal cord happens through motor neurons, which are nerve cells that enable motor movement. Each motor neuron is made up of a cell body, which holds all the cell components, dendrites which send information it receives to the cell body, and an axon which sends nerve impulses to the muscle (Porth Matfin, 2009). As electrical impulses are sent through the motor neuron, it stimulates the muscle fibers in the body to move. This is the process in which motor function happens. The manifestations of ALS are caused by the location of motor neuron death. When upper motor neurons die, the symptoms include problems controlling fine movements, spasms, dysphagia, dysphonia and dysarthria (Porth Matfin, 2009). Manifestations of lower motor neuron destruction include fasciculations, weakness, muscle atrophy, and hyporeflexia (Porth Matfin, 2009, p. 1284). Patients with early signs of ALS usually complain of feeling weak on one side, which is due to the slowing of electrical impulses to that group of muscles (Ignatavicius Workman, 2010). Since the impulses are slowed, they are not receiving adequate electrical stimulation to move and the person feels weak. As the disease progresses, all the motor neurons die and are not regenerated so, the patient is left paralyzed, losing the ability to speak, swallow and breathe (Ignatavicius Workman, 2010). A distinctive characteristic of ALS is that although the motor neurons die, the brain, cognitive functions and sensory neurons stay intact (Porth Matfin, 2009). This makes the disease especially devastating because patients become trapped inside their dying body, with a fully alert mind, but are unable to move. It is not known what causes the exact death of the motor neurons in the body, but five percent to 10% of cases are familial; the others are believed to be sporadic (Porth Matfin, 2009, p. ... Unethical Practices For Business Success Essay We have heard the well used phrase, When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and have applied it well as we travel among other countries and cultures, with great success. General practices of businesses can sometimes prove to be unethical, even though they are quite legal, or were simply unethical in their conduct and operations, with no remorse. Fast forward to now, the priorities have completely changed. Instead of this idea of improving the kid s overall wellbeing, it has shifted to this idea of commercializing youth sport. Brad Nicholson, from Princeton University, points out that commercializing youth sport have blurred the key aspects of sport with elements such rule enforcement, and ranking systems (Nicholson, 2010) . Along with the change in priorities, most people believe that kids stopped playing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents are important contributors to kids participating in sport because they are the ones who initiate their involvement along with providing some sort of support for their kids over the time they play. But all parents are different. Parent involvement in youth sport follows two patterns, support and pressures, and sport specialization. Most of the time the support and pressures of the parents, lead to the kids specializing in the sports. Children s goal orientation, learning, and worry is directly associated with the perceptions of the motivational climate established by parents (Wiersma, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using examples from the topics in the lectures and article presentations we have had so far, identify and explore a unifying theme of this material. A unifying theme of the material thus far is skeletal muscle adaptation. We have looked at the adaptations of resistance exercise using body builders as our prime example compared to adaptations in endurance athletes such as marathon runners as well as sprinters. In the article presentations, we have also looked at diet manipulation and timing of exercise (once a day vs twice daily) and the effects on training responses. • 40. Election Day After President Of The United States Election Day is when Americans everywhere get to cast their vote for the next President of the United States. However, Americans don t directly vote for President. So, what s happening on Election Day then? It is a bit complicated due to a system involving something called the Electoral College. The Electoral College is the collection of 538 votes that determine who will be the next President of the United States of America. The number 538 comes from the number of Representatives, 438, plus the number Senators, 100, all of which make up Congress. These votes, however, are not given directly to the citizens; they are divvied up amongst the states. Every state, no matter how populous, receives a minimum of three votes in the Electoral College. The remaining votes are then given out in proportion to the states population (Walenta, 2010). On Election Day, when citizens go to vote, they are not actually voting for who they want to be the next President. They are actually only deciding who the electors will be and telling them how they want them to vote ( Electoralvote.com ). If a candidate wins the majority of the votes in a state, no matter how minor, he will obtain all of that state s votes. For example, Florida has 29 votes in the Electoral College, if one candidate were to receive just 51% of Florida s vote, he would receive all of the 29 votes, even when 49% of the state did not vote for him. There are many controversial topics regards the Electoral College and how it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is often said that war is the locomotive of history that is what drives it along. Certainly the First World War helped to produce major changes in British government, society, the economy and industrial relations. The war produced political turmoil. In 1915 Prime Minister Asquith formed a coalition government, and the following year he was replaced as premier by Lloyd George, who gave a new impetus to the direction of the war. He believed in greater state intervention built upon the abandonment of laissez faire. The powers of the state had grown enormously. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Electric power was used more than ever before. The removal of so many skilled workers had initially threatened an economic collapse but had in fact stimulated the much needed mechanisation. The efficiency of agriculture had also increased, with the widespread introduction of the tractor. Such changes however, although at a slower pace, might have occurred even without the war. The same cannot be said for the high numbers of casualities incurred. A productive section of the workforce had been lost. In addition Britain still had to pay the financial costs of the war. Massive amounts of money had been borrowed and still had to be repaid. Valuable overseas markets had been lost. During the war massive investment in the staple industries had taken place. But once the war was over the demand of these products fell. The decline of the staple industries was also the main reason for the bitter industrial relations which developed in post war Britain. During the war actually industrial relations had improved. Trade unions reacted patriotically to the outbreak of was and a spirit of collaboration developed between them and the government. The Treasury Agreement was signed in 1915 which specified that unions involved in vital war work would not strike. In return they were promised that the old arrangements would be resumed after the war. It was only a voluntary agreement, but in July 1915 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The processed meat eaten today contains about 80% less nitrites than it did a few decades ago .(Gunnars) Meaning the food is a lot heathier then most people think today, Some processed meats like bacon due to the cooking process of high heat cooking the nitrates can turn into compounds called nitrosamines which is a carcinogen. The Sense Of Place By Jane Heaney Also emanating from the sectarian subject is Heaney s etymological study of Northern Ireland s landscape in order to transcend the contemporary political situation. In his lecture The Sense of Place given in 1977, Heaney explains that according to John Montague, the whole Irish landscape is a manuscript and Northern Ireland s history ensures an endless opportunity to treat the local landscape and its terminology as such. Originally, one language was spoken here; Gaelic Irish. However, resulting from plantations by English and Scottish settlers, Gaelic was infiltrated by their languages, thus creating three different dialects. • 45. A Bad Idea Of Year-Round School Most students enjoy summer vacation, but some educators feel that the summer break is too long and that students do not retain information as easily when they return in the fall. Some people argue that there should be year round schools, where there would by a 3 4 week break in the summer, a long winter break, and a week off in the spring and fall. I disagree with those people. The biggest problem with this schedule would be the summer break, it just isn t long enough. I believe year round school is a bad idea because summer break is a time when students get to take a break, parents may not be able to find a caretaker during the shorter breaks, and schools may not have sufficient funds. First of all, students get their breath of fresh air in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some schools already have trouble being able to afford supplies and other commodities, such as food and air conditioning, for students during the eight months that they are in school; imagine how much it would cost a school if students went attended school during the hot, humid summer days. Not all schools have a lot of money and struggle enough as it is, going to school longer and having shorter breaks would cause schools to cut certain funds and maybe even get rid of certain programs to just be able to pay for necessities that a school requires. In conclusion, year round school is an awful idea because students actually look at summer break as a break, parents have plenty of stress on them already, and some schools already have financial trouble. Rarely anyone thinks that year round school is a good idea, so it would be easier for everyone if the idea was just gone for good. Going to school year round would be stressful for everyone involved, and everyone involved already has enough stress on them as it is. School, as it is now, works just fine and doesn t need to ... A fraction that has high content of the specific organelle and low contamination by other organelles is desired however a fraction with highly purified mitochondria is better even if the most mitochondria is found in other fractions. The purity of mitochondrial fractions is usually determined by enzyme marker detection assay(Hajek et al 2004). In our experiment we will use differential centrifugation to isolate the mitochondria of cauliflower and then assay SDH activity using a fixed time assay. We will then measure protein content in our fractions and calculate specific activity and total activity of our fractions. Materials and Methods Mitochondrial Isolating We used to florets from the cauliflower and disrupted the cell walls using a cold isolation buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2) and an abrasive, we then strained the homogenate with cheesecloth into a centrifuge tube suppoerted by ice. The homogenate was then centrifuged at 600 g for 10 minutes at 4⁰C. The postnuclear supernatant was removed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for 30 minutes at 4⁰C. The post mitochondrial supernatant was removed and the mitochondrial pellet was resuspended in a cold assay buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.01 M KCl, 0.005 M MgCl₂, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2).
