Weight Gain And Obesity
polycystic ovarian syndrome also contribute to weight gain and obesity, and as well as medications.
Obesity affects every body system, especially cardiac disease is increased, as well as HTN,
hypertriglyceridemia, and decreased HDL cholesterol. Remarkable weight gain increases the risk of
developing type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, gastric reflux, urinary incontinence, and
gallbladder disease (Grossman Porth, 2014). Room 587 also struggles with HTN, sleep apnea, and
gastric reflux. Her struggles with these comorbidities are caused by her morbid obesity, which led to
metabolic syndrome. Limited mobility and increased joint problems are also the results of too much
weight on the body. Also in women, obesity contribute to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to her obesity, she struggles with sleep apnea, which is a sleep disordered breathing (SDB),
accompanied by daytime symptoms. Sleep apnea can be divided into two types, central sleep apnea
and obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is not common, and the cause is unknown. Central
sleep apnea is often associated with Cheyne stokes breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is
caused by upper airway obstruction and is mostly associated with snoring, disrupted sleep, excessive
daytime sleepiness, and is the most common type disease (Grossman Porth, 2014). Room 587 has
OSA, which is probably due to her obesity because sleep apnea is associated with obesity. Signs and
symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and labored breathing interrupted by periods of silence that
are soon followed by apnea. Treatment of OSA is based on the severity of the condition. Behavior
measures may be the only treatment necessary, such as weight loss, and proper bed positioning disease
(Grossman Porth, 2014). Since Room 587 is not willing to make an effort to lose weight, then one can
say that she will struggle with this condition for a long time. Another comorbidity that Room 587 has
is a vascular disease, which is similar to PAD. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of PAD, which is
mostly in the vessels of the lower extremities. The popliteal arteries are affected the most, and when
lesions develop, then the tibial, peroneal, and pedal vessels can also be

Coastal Dune Systems Serve As A Natural Alternative For...
Chapter 1. Introduction, project aim and main objectives.
1.1 Introduction
Coastal dune systems serve as a natural alternative to hard engineering defence methods. They act as a
barrier which contribute to the stabilization of the coastal landscape and protects it when coastal
disasters occur. During storms, waves flatten the beach and collapse the dune facing the beach,
realising sand offshore and creating large bars in the surf zone. These sandbars cause waves to break
further offshore, and following the storm, waves with less height return the eroded sand slowly from
offshore back to the beach, allowing the dune to recover. In this way, the dunes absorb the impact of
storms preventing or minimising intrusion of waters into inland areas, protecting structures from
flooding. On the other hand, hard engineering methods tend to interrupt natural beach processes,
increasing erosion risk and beach scour, which often ends up in artificial replacement of sand.
Therefore, dune systems are highly efficient and the least expensive defence against shoreline erosion,
and is a softer solution since there is no introduction of harsh elements to the system (Choi et al.,
2013; Gomez Pina et al., 2002; Cornelis and Gabriels, 2003). An example is the dune system along the
Dutch coast, where plenty of research has been done due to their importance as a line of defence
feature in the Netherlands (de Groot et al., 2012).
Such defences also have downsides, and one of those are transgressive

The Pros And Cons Of College Education
This past summer I graduated High School and this past school year I had to give a lot of thought
where I would like to go to college or if even going to college was the correct choice for me.
However, I did start preparing for college at the beginning of High School as the concept and need of
college was instilled within me by most of my family and those at school from a young age as they
tended to say education was my ticket and it would take me far in life. However is the higher
education and experience one gains through college worth the large amount of debt one will most
likely take on in order to go to college? This topic I find to be very interesting and to resonate rather
deeply with me as while many of my friends decided to follow my same path, deciding to go on to
higher education almost as many decide not to go to college. This could have been from a multitude of
reasons from not being able to afford college to not feeling they have the aptitude and commitment to
do college. I took the time to analyze the question Is college worth it? with two sources, both
pertaining to whether college is really worth the investment of time and money one puts into it. I
found two articles Is College worth it? and College: Who profits? which both help to analyze the pros
and cons of college along analyzing various statistics pertaining to college. They both seem to be
rather useful with one being more of a report on a book and the other being an article about a report.
The first source I analyzed was Is College Worth it? Written by Michelle Adam and published by The
Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. Adam reports on a recent question Is College Worth it? which
was analyzed and asked by the Pew Research center. Adam noted throughout the source numerous
surveys and statistics, which the Pew Research used to help answer their question. One such survey
noted that 57% of people surveyed did not find they got good value for their money with higher
education, 75% said college was too expensive for many Americans, and yet 86% of college grads
said it was a good investment for them personally with 94% of parents claiming they expected their
child to go to college. Adam also noted that within the survey

A Polytheistic Religion
Being a polytheistic religion, Hindus worship multiple Gods. Although a lot of the different gods are
said to be different avatars of the trimurti, in a sense, each God represents an ideal quality or role one
must follow to in order to follow their Dharma. As shown in a lot of the readings each God has a
different quality and these qualities in a sense serve as model behaviors a true believer must follow in
order to follow the path of Dharma. For example, Goddess Durga, is considered to be a very good role
model of Feminist movements in India. It is said that she represents the the violent and destructive
qualities of the Mother Goddess (Shakti). She is known to protect mankind from the evil by destroying
evil forces such as selfishness, anger,

Essay On California Tax
California s tax code is unreasonable. It appears to be improving, with the rich paying higher tax rates
than the poor. However, the poorest are still paying the greatest fraction of their income to the state
because of sales taxes. Depending on local municipalities, state and local sales taxes can reach 9.25%
in many cities and can be as high as 10.0%.
Many companies and businesses have already left California to escape high corporate income taxes.
They ve relocated to states without income tax, where they can save up to 13% more of their income.
The seven U.S. states with no income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington
and Wyoming) have become a beacon for growth. They re outperforming California in job creation as

This is a proposal to reform California s taxes. Instead of taxing Californians businesses, which can
just simply relocate to another state, California should tax mainly what can never leave its borders its
real estate. In addition, California should stop state income and sales taxes.
This is a very feasible proposal. Many states like Texas and Florida have no income tax and lower
sales tax, but higher property taxes at 2% to 3%, compared to California s property tax of 1%.
California s state tax revenue is comprised of 31.2% property taxes, 30.1% sales taxes, and 31.7%
individual and corporate income taxes. If the property taxes were raised to 3% or 4% for all property,
including houses and commercial and investment real estate, sales and income taxes will no longer be
necessary.
Although tripling the property tax bill will alarm many, it will be compensated by no state sales tax
(highest at 10.0%) and income tax (highest rate at 13.3%). Eliminating the income tax will increase
take home pay for everyone. The state will appear more attractive than its neighboring states and thus,
draw new businesses, create jobs, and trigger an influx of talented workers. This will then induce
rising house demands as more people and companies relocate to California to reap the tax benefits and
will make up the expected decline in house

Economic Effects of the Foreign Exchange Rate
INTRODUCTION
This paper tackles the effects of the foreign exchange rate as a whole and how it affects the country
and at the same time how it gets affected. This paper enumerates the advantages and disadvantages of
having a strong Peso. The paper also discusses what factors affect the strengthening and weakening of
the Philippine Peso. This paper also includes an in depth analysis of how the foreign exchange could
affect and gets affected by the economy, the society and politics.
OVERVIEW
The Philippine exchanged rate is express in terms of one unit of dollar versus one unit of peso. There
are two cases on how an exchanged rate would be determined the first system is the free floating
exchange rate where the supply and demand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By May, the peso depreciated as it reached to an average of P52 per dollar; And by June, dropped to
P53.59 per dollar. This was caused by the Higher risk aversion in the global markets and the possible
increase of the Federal Reserve Bank s interest rate. Conversely, the peso appreciated by 1.66%
reaching to a level of P52.31 per dollar on June and closed at P51.97 per dollar on July 25, after the
president s State of the Nation Address. And by August, it reached to a P51.33 per dollar rate,
increasing by 1.90% from its previous rate. Due to the increasing confidence by investors and
improving economic conditions, the peso further increased its value and reached to an average rate of
P50.37 per dollar in September and P49.91 in early October, the highest level since 2002.
Volatility during the year 2006:
Due to oil price roll backs and the approval of the RVAT law, the peso s volatility improved early in
January 2006 averaging P0.19. It continued its trend in March to an average of P0.13. However, the
peso s volatility increased to P0.30 in April and P0.59 in May which was caused by the depreciation of
the value of the currency. In June, volatility decreased to P0.23. This was attributable to the increase
of the country s GDP by 5.5% in the second quarter of 2006. But it rose again in July to an average of
P0.43. This was

Silence Of The Lambs Essay
Ways That Help a Film Portray a Suspenseful Mood
I believe that Silence of the Lambs was the most suspenseful movie we have watched. There were
many things in the movie that messed with one s mind and made them see or believe things that weren
t there. Camera angles, lighting, and the tone of a character s voice can help add suspense to a film.
Also, the amount of irony that was in the film made the viewer be on their toes the whole time. The
Silence of the Lambs could possibly make one have nightmares or be afraid of certain things because
of the way the film was portrayed.
The setting of a film can play a huge part of adding suspense or creating a mood for the film right off
the bat. When The Silence of the Lambs first started Clarice Starling was running through the woods
in the early morning and it was foggy outside. Also, she was alone and suddenly an officer came out
of the woods. That alone can add suspense because we had no idea was she was running from or for
and then someone shows up. This film was mainly shot in Virginia, but since they are FBI agents they
were traveling all over the place. The most suspenseful place in the story I believe was Bill s house. ...

In The Silence of the Lambs there was a lot of irony going on. Most of it was dramatic irony. Some
examples of dramatic irony was when Agent Starling went to Buffalo Bill s house thinking she was at
some old lady s house and the rest of her company was in Chicago thinking they were at the right
house. The viewer knew this from watching because of the camera being able to jump back and forth,
but the character s in the story had no clue. When Lecter kills those two security guards the viewer
know it s coming because we saw the sharp object in his hand, but the security guards didn t have a
clue. Irony can make a film have more suspense because the viewer is able to see both sides what is
happening versus the characters in the film that can

The Food Safety Is A Highly Overlooked Essay
Food safety is a highly overlooked yet crucial aspect of the food industry, as evident in the deadly
1993 Escherichia Coli outbreak in multiple Jack in the Box locations. Escherichia Coli is prevalent in
raw and undercooked ground beef, which is a common food item on the Jack in the Box menu; the
bacterial contamination during the slaughtering process of the meat lead to this gut wrenching
epidemic (Wiley 2013). The horrific E. coli outbreak could have been prevented if it were not for Jack
in the Box s meat supplier Vons, Foodmaker s vice president of technical services Ken Dunkley, and
Jack in the Box s President Bob Nungent. The 1993 Jack in the Box E. Coli outbreak could have been
prevented firstly if the contaminated meat itself had never set foot in a single Jack in the Box
establishment. It was made evident upon an interview with Jack in the Box s President Bob Nugent
that the testing that was done on that particular batch of meat indicated that it had high levels of E.
coli. It is their responsibility to notify us if there s any potential hazard with a product. We were
notified of those high levels of E. coli after the outbreak. So without notification, we couldn t take any
measures to preclude it . (Benedict 2011). Vons broke the Meat inspection Act, as it is a federal law
that spells out the food codes it is a breach of warranty to sell or distribute food that is contaminated or
adulterated (Benedict 2011). This initial error on Von s part gave leeway for

Divergent Dystopia Essay
Divergent Dystopia vs. modern day society
Many of us focus on trying to see the positive side of things, but the truth is that sometimes we need to
open our eyes, and notice the negative activities sourrounding our world. Once we comprehende what
is negativetely affecting our world, then we should find a way to fix it, and shape the world. Finally,
after we have done all of that, then maybe we can have a better world, but to have a utopian society
just seems way out of our reach. A dystopian society, just like the one in the novel divergent,
definetely is different from our modern day society, but our society dosent neceseraly stay behind On
the novel divergent, the society seems out of control, it feel like it is a place were you cant be feeling
safe for a second. In the novel, the euridite faction had been long time rivals with abnegation, so they
had a sinister plan to end with abnigation once and for all. Consequently, what the euridite did, was

is no doubt that in our society although, it is illegal to commit any sort of crime of harming other

harming someone is a crime, yet they still do it. similarly, to the novel divergent, in our modern day
society there is often alot of bribeing, and manipulation between people, including the goverment at
times. Overall, the point is that even though a setting just like the one in the dystopian novel divergent

Analyzing the Surprise Ending in Descartes Discourse on...
Surprise Ending in Descartes In the book Discourses on the Method and the Meditations, author Rene
Descartes famously questions the existence of humanity. His most famous quotation, the one for
whom he is most remembered is I think therefore I am (Descartes 11). According to this idea, so long
as a being has the ability to think then they existed. Animals have brains and therefore they must exist.
In order to truly, exist, to be a thinking entity, a person or organism must utilize the ability granted to
them by their mind. This is the focus of much of this text, the nature of existence and the line between
what is true and what we only imagine or perceive to be true. For the majority of the text, the
philosopher asks questions in trying to formulate his own identity and indeed whether or not he
existed as all. It would be assumed that the end of the book would be a conclusion of this internal
dialogue where Descartes definitively states his position on human existence. However, Descartes
instead devotes the end of the text to a wholly new concept: namely he applies the question of
existence to a being above humanity. At the end of the text, instead of continuing on with these
questions Descartes instead discusses the idea of God and whether or not He exists. At the time of the
Royal Society which Descartes was a member of, the researchers and philosophers were trying to
understand everything about the world, something which actually is impossible to do. Renee Descartes

What Happened After Ten O Clock On The Sunday Night
Abstract
What happened after ten o clock on the Sunday night of June 12, 1994 will forever be a mystery when
speaking about the murder case of Nicole Brown Simpson and her acquaintance Ronald Goldman.
This paper will discuss the trial of O.J. Simpson ex football star and a famous media personnel,.
Furthermore it will go into detail about the murders, evidence gathered and the final verdict of the
jury. Could Simpson have committed the murders due to the fact that if he couldn t have Nicole, then
no one could? Or was this trial all just a case that is revolved around corrupt police trying to frame an
innocent black man? Hence the defense created a new slogan for the case, if it doesn t fit, you must
acquit . What is true and what is a lie? This paper will discuss how and why this case is one of the

Analysis Of The Sun Also Rises By Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway is celebrated as one of the greatest 20th century novelists. Penning roughly twenty
seven novels throughout his lifetime, Hemingway declared that a writer s job was to tell the truth,
(Bloom, pg 10). It was through this belief that he often drew upon worldly experiences and events as
well as personal happenings and musings to create his works. In his 1926 novel, The Sun Also Rises,
Hemingway utilizes and references his time spent as Red Cross volunteer in Italy, his adventures in
Pamplona, Spain, and his profound love for alcohol to fuel the adventures of Jake Barnes and his
assorted company throughout the novel, focusing on underlying themes of alcoholism, personal
rebellion, and sensuality. Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, to a
privileged and well off family, but he never met the expectations set for him by his family. While he
often reflected upon his own life experiences as a material for his writing, oddly enough, he never
wrote of his hometown (Bloom, 10). Hemingway was a traveler and a ladies man, having married four
different women over the course of his life and spending his time between novels traveling the world.
Immediately following high school, he jumped into working as a novice journalist for The Kansas
City Star, and the writing style he developed in that field was to influence later to become his fictional
writing style.
During the throes of the WWI, Hemingway found himself volunteering for the American

Nicaraguan Revolution
Research Question: To what extent was liberation theology a catalyst for the Nicaraguan Revolution?
Historical Context of the Nicaraguan Revolution Somoza García gained support from the US through
the assassination of Sandino and repression of a peasant movement and was elected President of
Nicaragua in 1936. Under the Somozas, social stability was achieved through political schemes and
brutal repression, which allowed for rapid economic growth in which the elite would benefit the most.
Under the last Somoza dictator, Anastasio Somoza Debayle, corruption and human rights violations

Sandinistas by Catholic bishops was a strategic one in order for the Church to have some influence
over the Nicaraguan government. The political activism of the Church in Nicaragua was through
collaboration with the Sandinistas. Students from the Revolutionary Christian Movement participated

You Are Who You Pretend To Be
I recently was introduced to a Kurt Vonnegut quote by a friend. It was mentioned only in passing and
was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in my
thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are who you
pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we might like to
think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare ourselves to
others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists independently of that
personal ideal. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of our apparent individuality, the way we act
around others, how we dress and talk, and our general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we actively pursue our desires, we take on traits favorable to the completion of our goals. The
assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition, but they
become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged.
This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in
literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this essay at
least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some works which we
have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually unwise to look at the
main character. Although that is the main place to find character development, it wouldn t be a good
novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors.
The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever despised
Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a character who we
see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on Hester and
Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. Unless he was a peculiar individual in his life before
the story of the scarlet letter, it could be assumed that he was not previously driven by revenge. It is
understandable, then, to look at him as an individual

Analysis of the TV Program Star Trek Essay
America got its first look of a program that would later become legendary on September 8, 1966 at
8:30 PM on NBC. America was never the same after Star Trek made its debut that night. The series
did not receive the recognition it deserved until it was canceled after only three years and later
returning in syndication. However, Star Trek was never an ordinary science fiction program to begin
with. Comparison to other programs in this genre is difficult because Star Trek is certainly not an

How can the human race ever hope to achieve friendship with alien races if it can t even make friends
with itself? The program had two regular characters that epitomized American minorities, who were
quickly acquiring a position in American society, Lt. Sulu and Lt. Uhura. Lt. Sulu, played by George
Takei, was the helmsman of the USS Enterprise. Having a Japanese American appointed in an
important rank was certainly a huge step forward. Despite the fact that antagonistic emotions
regarding Japanese Americans ascribed to World War II had lessened remarkably, some unease
prevailed as to whether a Japanese American character would cost the program Indonesian viewers.
Gene Roddenberry never considered Lt. Sulu as a token Asian , even when it appeared like everyone
was opposed to him giving a major role to minority characters. Lt. Sulu consequently became an vital
member of the Enterprise crew. Compared to Sulu, it is unfathomable to envision someone else that
could step into this role and play him so well. Lt. Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols, was a
communications officer of the Enterprise. Uhura, whose name means freedom was a Black African
princess from East Africa who was fluent in Swahili, which added a particular appeal to her character.

The Prejudice of Maycomb All men are created equal , one of the most ignored statements that our
founding fathers wrote in the Constitution. People exercise prejudice everywhere in the U.S. Prejudice
is a topic that is constantly revisited in Harper Lee s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Her novel focuses
on Scout, the daughter of Atticus Finch, living her life in the 1930s of rural Maycomb, Alabama. Scout
witnesses the injustice and prejudice against many people, not only Negroes. The heat of prejudice

blacks. White people dislike a person who speaks like a black and black people dislike a person who
speaks like a white. The fact that the black community despises the way whites act and vice versa

millennia till the light caused the daemons to vanish, which lead to believe they were destroyed. The
daemons waited for the day of Armageddon, when they would once again reign over the four corners
of the earth. Atmospheric disturbances caused by the super earthquakes created Dimension Gateways
opening Realm Portals. The Portals allowed species of daemons to cross over from other dimensions
and realms.
They encircled the globe, establishing Legion Command Posts to organize their slaughter campaigns.

Cola Wars Memo
The existing concentrate business is largely controlled by Coca Cola Company (Coca Cola) and
PepsiCo (Pepsi), together claiming a combined 72% of the U.S. carbonated soft drink (CSD) market
sales volume in 2009. Refer to Exhibit 1 for an illustration of the CSD industry value chain. For more
than a century, Coca Cola and Pepsi have maintained growth and large market shares through
mastering five competitive forces, shown in Exhibit 2, that drive profitability and shape the industry
structure.
Entry Barriers: Both Coca Cola and Pepsi have strong entry barriers for new competitors, especially in
high end markets like the US. Because of the two companies sizes, market maturity, and good market
position, many barriers exist for new entrants. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, all risk in price fluctuations in the raw materials market is transferred and paid for by the
bottling business. Supplier power of the concentrate business is also exerted over the bottling business
by the threat of acquisition and vertical integration the concentrate business supports its bottling
business through providing suggestions for operational improvement. While this support can be
viewed positively, both Coca Cola and Pepsi have acquired its bottling franchises due to their
dissatisfaction over the operational effectiveness of its bottling business. Through the last few
decades, Coca Cola and Pepsi have oscillated between acquiring and re franchising its partner bottling
businesses.
Rivalry: The rivalry between Coca Cola and Pepsi is extremely high; however, both companies
continue to remain profitable. Prior to the 1980s, pricing wars negatively affected profitability for
Coca Cola and Pepsi. After Coca Cola renegotiated its franchise bottling contract and both companies
increased concentrate prices, the rivalry began to focus on differentiation and advertising strategies.
Through creative advertising campaigns, such as the Pepsi Challenge where Pepsi ran blind taste tests
to demonstrate that consumers

Fetal Pig Research Paper
When society thinks about starfish, perch, chordate, and fetal pig they become extremely curious
about how their bodies operate because of how they are made up. I will give a brief synopsis of all
animals before going into major detail about them. According to the online website named
dictionary.com, Starfish are any echinoderm of the class Asteroidea, having the body radially
arranged, usually in the form of a star, with five or more rays or arms radiating from a central disk;
asteroid (dictionary.com). It is known that a chordate is an animal belonging to the phylum Chordata,
composed of true vertebrates and animals having a notochord (dictionary.com). According to research,
a fetal pig is an animal in the phylum Chordata and class Mammalia (dictionary.com). A perch is
known to be a certain kind of fish with very spiny fins (dictionary). Starfish, perch, chordate, and fetal
pig are some very interesting animals that possess some exclusive qualities both similar and different.

Mining and The Environment Essay examples
Introduction In our days, mining for resources is inevitable. The resources we need are valuable in
everyday life. Such resources mined up are coal, copper, gold, silver, and sand. However, mining
poses environmental risks that can degrade the quality of soil and water, which can end up effecting us
humans if not taken care of and many of the damages are irreversible once they have occurred.
History and Case Studies of Mining and the Effects on the Environment Mines pose a threat to the
environment. They can degrade soil and water quality if left untreated. The United States
Environmental protection Agency (USEPA) s Region 9 assessment of state data states that there are
approximately 420,000 abandoned mines in the states of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These left over tailings create human and ecological health problems that can be caused from exposure
to the dust that are blown from these mine sites since metal toxicants can persist in tailing particles
(arizona.edu, 2008). Another threat to the environment is acid mine drainage (also known as acid rock
drainage). Acid mine drainage is the outflow of acidic water from a mining site. This acid is formed by
the oxidation of iron sulfide. The oxidation occurs when iron sulfide is exposed to the air or to
dissolved oxygen in the water, which causes the iron to rust and the sulfur reacts with the water to
forum sulfuric acid (Coil, D., McKittrick, E., and Higman, B., 2010). Figure 2 illustrates the sulfuric
acid that is formed. Acid mine drainage is most common with hardrock mines where metal ore is
bound together with sulfur. The increased acidity created from acid mine drainage has a series of
negative effects, depending on the severity of change in the pH level. The acid mine drainage creates
inhospitable environments to aquatic life in river systems and former mine sites, with the exception of
extremophile bacteria (Coil, D., McKittrick, E., and Higman, B., 2010). Acid mine drainage can
severely degrade the quality of the water, especially if it s a essential water supply.
Solutions There are two primary methods of preventing acid mine drainage fall. One is preventing
sulfuric acid from forming, and the other is neutralizing the acid after it forms. In

The main product lines of the industry are carbonated soft drinks, fruit beverages, bottled water, so
called functional beverages (including energy drinks and ready to drink teas and coffees), and sport
drinks. The soft drink industry is made up of two major manufacturing systems that fall into distinct
categories: (1) flavoring syrup and concentrate manufacturing and (2) soft drink manufacturing. The
supply chain is largely dependent on the syrup producer, as this is the driver for most downstream
operations. The majority of the bottled soft drinks follow a similar product life cycle, moving from
syrup producer, to bottler, to distributor, to merchant, to final consumer. The principal raw materials
used in the beverage industry are cans and ends, glass bottles, PET bottles and caps, paper products,
sweeteners, juice, fruit, water and other ingredients. Major retailers associated with the beverage
industry include Wal Mart, Target and Kroger. In addition to retailers, beverage manufacturers also
depend on foodservice customers such as McDonald s and Taco Bell, which buy syrups for fountain
drinks. Major competitors in the manufacturing industry include Coca Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle S.A. and

Ken Kesey, they are in a mental institution and are repressed by their head nurse until a new patient,
McMurphy, comes in laughing an changing the way everything is ran, turning the insane sane. In the

and no one can do anything about it. However, McMurphy s happiness and his ability to be free in the

the combine altogether grew stronger. Towards the end of the novel, McMurphy s humor and
influence on the men have made them more confident and have finally allowed them to overcome the
power of the Nurse. Through McMurphy s actions, the men are less afraid of her and more willing to
challenge her authority. This is mostly seen in the scenes where they vote to get what they want like
the game room, the World Series, a basketball team, and a fishing trip. The men have grown stronger
and more confident and no longer are afraid of being outside of the ward. In the scene where they are
on the fishing trip and on the boat drinking and having a good time, everyone is falling over each

John Wooden once said, Never mistake activity for achievement. To me achievement means
accomplishing something while activity merely means you ve done something. Don t get me wrong, I
have always thought when a person is in doubt they should just do something! However, in the end we
re all measured by our achievement not our action. In order to adhere to a schedule to succeed in my

time to complete tasks, and staying in communication with my instructor. The first step I should do in
order to adhere to my schedule is to create realistic goals. When setting realistic goals it is really

Others may feel that America will never accept people of color as equals and thus, may prefer to live
their lives within ethnic boundaries. Nevertheless, these various definitions are not static. American
society is and has been experiencing numerous changes that deal with the issues of the Asian
American minority. Anti Asian laws came in three forms: (1) federal naturalization laws that imposed
a racial barrier on Asian immigrants seeking United States citizenship; (2) federal immigration laws
limiting migration from Asian and Pacific Island countries; (3) state and local laws discriminating

How Does Alexander The Great Create A Perfect Society
Alexander III of Macedon, or as commonly known by the infamous name of Alexander the Great, had
a dream of circumnavigating the world to finally see the ocean from both sides of the world. There
were obstacles that were in between the objective of his conquest, other civilizations that were very
foreign to his people. As commonly done in this current era of the world, the civilizations were
conquered in order to improve on to the current state of another one s empire. Alexander the Great had
intentions that were simple, to civilize the foreign nations and to leave a long lasting legacy under his
name. This task was not easy where he had to explore the middle east, encounter the challenges that he
had to go through, and exchange his model of a perfect society to the conquered nations. ... Show

Compare And Contrast Owens And The Ohio State University
Owens and The Ohio State University
Owens achievements on the track in high school were so phenomenal that he caught the attention of
several Big Ten universities, including The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. It
came down to which school had the best offer, and in the end, OSU s proposal that Owens could work
part time as a freight elevator operator at the State House while training and going to classes was the
winning one. After passing a series of exams that summer to qualify him to enter college (he was a
few credits shy of graduating from high school), Owens started classes at OSU in the fall of 1933.
At the time of Owens matriculation, The Ohio State University had only one men s dorm, and Owens
was barred from it because of his race. He instead shared a boarding house with several other African
American students on East 11th Avenue, where they cooked their own meals and sometimes ate in the
student union. No restaurant along High Street would serve them, nor were they allowed to go to most
movie theaters. Owens, though, made the best of the situation, focusing on his studies and training

Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern
Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar
consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England.
Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the
first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the
working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the
contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the
history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United
States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we
will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from
Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the production of sugar in Europe. It
has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has increased the interactions between
the people through trade contracts. This evident as Mintz argues that The development of plantation
production beyond the Americas represented the

Eating Meat Ethics
In many societies, most people today consume meat and other types of food that came from an animal,
yet there is a growing controversial debate regarding whether or not it is ethically right to eat any kind
of animal. A commonly used argument against eating meat is that it is not necessary to survive or
improve your health by eating meat and killing animals just for the sake of the taste that eating meat
gives, is unjustifiably wrong. Those against eating meat also believe that the meat production
resembles animal husbandry and it is one of the many alarming concerns involving animal welfare and
their rights. Those in support of eating meat have responded with cultural, nutritional, scientific, and
religious reasoning for their support of meat eating. Some meat eaters will not consume animal flesh if
the animal is killed cruelly in a factory farm slaughterhouses or avoiding particular meats such as fois
gras. A pioneer of the animal liberation movement, Peter Singer stated that it is possible to live healthy
and survive without the consumption of any animal byproducts, which would cause harm to these
animals. Because Singer claimed that since animals can feel, philosophers that either agree or disagree
with Singer, had built upon their works based on Singer and his message was applied by advocates of
animal rights. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Trade in Art, Fine Art, Antiques and Antiquities and...
The trade in art, fine art, antiques and antiquities is not portrayed as a violent crime or illicit market
and generally does not come off as a threat to international security. However, because of the large,
increasing demand for antiquities, politically unstable source nations rich with cultural artifacts are
exploited, prompting illicit activity in the clandestine art world, which is becoming an increasing
concern. Terrorist organizations profit from the large financial volume of such low risk, high profit
illicit activities and engage in cultural erosion that leaves the source nations weak in cultural identity.
This in turn, allows terrorist groups the advantage of pursuing and shaping ideological notions in such
volatile nations. The illicit, clandestine art market is also a unique market in which to create backdoor
channels to organized crime, weapon trafficking and narcotic smuggling trade routes.
The art market is attracting attention due to some of the recent, notably high sales prices;
unfortunately, such a profitable return rate from art sales provides enticement for terrorist groups to
participate. The link of terrorism turns the subject of cultural property from a disputable matter in
foreign relations to a matter with significant implications pertaining to international security. Local
laborers, eager to provide a living for their family, have no qualms about looting cultural artifacts and
selling them to make a profit. The network between laborers, dealers,

The Success Of Project Portfolio Management
Jeffrey Pinto defines project portfolio management as, the systematic process of selecting, supporting,
and managing a firm s collection of projects. (p. 92). Many large firms can have multiple projects
going on at the same time. These projects might support each other or can be stand alone projects.
This essay will examine the keys to successful project portfolio management and analyze the key
difficulties in successfully implementing them. The success of project portfolio management is
determined by three key factors. The factors include: flexible structure and freedom of
communication, low cost environmental scanning, and time paced transition. Projects that involve
difficult channels of communication can be very difficult to develop. The projects that involve lots of
red tape and other levels of administration can hinder them from meeting milestones and can be
doomed to fail from the beginning. One of the main keys to a projects success is communication.
Pinto writes, Successful portfolios emerge from environments that foster flexibility and open
communication. When project teams are allowed to improvise and experiment on existing product
lines, innovative new product ideas are more likely to emerge. (p. 95). This open communication and
flexibility allows team members to voice their concerns when issues arise and allow them to come up
with alternatives freely with having to get approval from project leaders or management. The next key
to success is low cost

Harry Potter Persuasive Essay
Imagine a moment in your life where you must accept something that is truly devastating and
detrimental. Knowing that everything you have worked hard for and obtained will be tarnished in
order to serve the greater good. Is it possible for one to be so selfless and follow in pursuit of such an
act? As William E Gladstone once said, Selfishness is the greatest curse of the human race . Accepting
one s responsibility to think of others when overcoming a challenge is a critical decision that takes
place in Harry Potter. Harry must overcome a difficult challenge to save the lives of those around him
but put his own life in demise.

dollar was close to an eight year shortage against the real, having lost more than 33% of its value
during 2009 alone. During the past 12 month era, the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar (USD) has
diverse from a low of BRL R $1.5310 to in height of BRL $1.7790. During 2010, the United States
dollar typically kept an everyday exchange rate between (BRL) R$1.70 and (BRL) R$1.80,
occasionally reducing below the (BRL) R$1.70 level.
However in 2011 it had so far been devastating to the dollar. Thru late July, 2011, the dollar dropped
as little as R $1.5310, its lowest level since way before 2008 when the global financial crisis began. In
April, 2010, the Brazilian Central Bank increased interest rates in the country, which took as its
outcome the alliance of the real and the weakening of the dollar. The real touched quarterly in height
of 1.7205 in April 2010, two days after the Brazilian Central Bank raised up the benchmark interest
rate 0.75 percentage point to 9.5 percent. Later at that time, the Brazilian Central Bank has raised the
standard interest rate to 12.5% in an effort to curb inflation. Although some do not see the central
Bank raising the00201interest rates again in 2011, there should be many who would think at least one
more raise of 0.25% before the end of 2011 if increase continues. Thanks to the huge capital inflows
due to the huge sale of Petro Bras shares, the Brazilian real has been on a tear as of late. Yet, it is not
just the recent equity

A Brief Biography Of Glenn Holland
In 1965, professional musician and composer, Glenn Holland takes up a position teaching music at
John F. Kennedy High School in an attempt to enjoy more free time for composing a piece of
orchestral music. Soon after he starts his new career, Holland discovers that he will have less free time
than he had imagined. He also discovers that teaching a class full of teenagers is much harder than he
originally thought. He eventually wins over the class by using rock and roll as a way to make classical
music more accessible to his students. When his wife Iris becomes pregnant, he uses the money he had
saved for producing his orchestra to buy a house for his family. Once school resumes and his son Cole
is born, Holland is drafted into being in charge

Magnet Schools Case Study
Public schools need to be competitive and imaginative when marketing their campuses so they are
viewed by the community as safe and with stronger academic programs. It is imperative to improve
the quality of teaching and learning in schools because people like to be part of a successful system.
The push to market traditional districts and regular schools is stronger than it s been before, said Rich
Bagin, the executive director of the National School Public Relations Association in Rockville, Md.
We have principals coming to us and saying we have a great school here, but everybody seems to be
leaning toward what s new (Samuels, 2012). The new can redefined as public education and can be
achieved through marketing by getting people to know you, like you, and trust you.

Magnet schools remain part of the public school system and operate under the same administration
and school board (Chen, 2015). Magnet schools have a specialized curricular focus such as science,
technology, engineering, and math. It also focuses on the arts and educational or career paths. Magnet
schools are schools of choice and students are enrolled based on their interest. Funding for magnet
schools differ from public schools because they receive additional funding for their students covering
supplies, teachers, and educational programs. Magnet schools give parents an option of sending their
child to a school with a specialized focus. The fact that magnet schools offer families a choice with
regard to their child s education is seen as a primary advantage as well. This increased competition,
supporters argue, actually benefits children in all schools, magnet or otherwise, because public schools
seek to improve their academic programs in order to keep students in their schools (Chen,

Due to her obesity, she struggles with sleep apnea, which is a sleep disordered breathing (SDB), accompanied by daytime symptoms. Sleep apnea can be divided into two types, central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is not common, and the cause is unknown. Central sleep apnea is often associated with Cheyne stokes breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by upper airway obstruction and is mostly associated with snoring, disrupted sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and is the most common type disease (Grossman Porth, 2014). Room 587 has OSA, which is probably due to her obesity because sleep apnea is associated with obesity. Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and labored breathing interrupted by periods of silence that are soon followed by apnea. Treatment of OSA is based on the severity of the condition. Behavior measures may be the only treatment necessary, such as weight loss, and proper bed positioning disease (Grossman Porth, 2014). Since Room 587 is not willing to make an effort to lose weight, then one can say that she will struggle with this condition for a long time. Another comorbidity that Room 587 has is a vascular disease, which is similar to PAD. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of PAD, which is mostly in the vessels of the lower extremities. • 3. Coastal Dune Systems Serve As A Natural Alternative For... Chapter 1. Introduction, project aim and main objectives. 1.1 Introduction Coastal dune systems serve as a natural alternative to hard engineering defence methods. They act as a barrier which contribute to the stabilization of the coastal landscape and protects it when coastal disasters occur. During storms, waves flatten the beach and collapse the dune facing the beach, realising sand offshore and creating large bars in the surf zone. These sandbars cause waves to break further offshore, and following the storm, waves with less height return the eroded sand slowly from offshore back to the beach, allowing the dune to recover. In this way, the dunes absorb the impact of storms preventing or minimising intrusion of waters into inland areas, protecting structures from flooding. On the other hand, hard engineering methods tend to interrupt natural beach processes, increasing erosion risk and beach scour, which often ends up in artificial replacement of sand. Therefore, dune systems are highly efficient and the least expensive defence against shoreline erosion, and is a softer solution since there is no introduction of harsh elements to the system (Choi et al., 2013; Gomez Pina et al., 2002; Cornelis and Gabriels, 2003). An example is the dune system along the Dutch coast, where plenty of research has been done due to their importance as a line of defence feature in the Netherlands (de Groot et al., 2012). Such defences also have downsides, and one of those are transgressive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of College Education This past summer I graduated High School and this past school year I had to give a lot of thought where I would like to go to college or if even going to college was the correct choice for me. However, I did start preparing for college at the beginning of High School as the concept and need of college was instilled within me by most of my family and those at school from a young age as they tended to say education was my ticket and it would take me far in life. However is the higher education and experience one gains through college worth the large amount of debt one will most likely take on in order to go to college? This topic I find to be very interesting and to resonate rather deeply with me as while many of my friends decided to follow my same path, deciding to go on to higher education almost as many decide not to go to college. This could have been from a multitude of reasons from not being able to afford college to not feeling they have the aptitude and commitment to do college. I took the time to analyze the question Is college worth it? with two sources, both pertaining to whether college is really worth the investment of time and money one puts into it. I found two articles Is College worth it? and College: Who profits? which both help to analyze the pros and cons of college along analyzing various statistics pertaining to college. They both seem to be rather useful with one being more of a report on a book and the other being an article about a report. The first source I analyzed was Is College Worth it? Written by Michelle Adam and published by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. Adam reports on a recent question Is College Worth it? which was analyzed and asked by the Pew Research center. Adam noted throughout the source numerous surveys and statistics, which the Pew Research used to help answer their question. One such survey noted that 57% of people surveyed did not find they got good value for their money with higher education, 75% said college was too expensive for many Americans, and yet 86% of college grads said it was a good investment for them personally with 94% of parents claiming they expected their child to go to college. However, the poorest are still paying the greatest fraction of their income to the state because of sales taxes. Depending on local municipalities, state and local sales taxes can reach 9.25% in many cities and can be as high as 10.0%. Many companies and businesses have already left California to escape high corporate income taxes. They ve relocated to states without income tax, where they can save up to 13% more of their income. Instead of taxing Californians businesses, which can just simply relocate to another state, California should tax mainly what can never leave its borders its real estate. In addition, California should stop state income and sales taxes. This is a very feasible proposal. Many states like Texas and Florida have no income tax and lower sales tax, but higher property taxes at 2% to 3%, compared to California s property tax of 1%. California s state tax revenue is comprised of 31.2% property taxes, 30.1% sales taxes, and 31.7% individual and corporate income taxes. If the property taxes were raised to 3% or 4% for all property, including houses and commercial and investment real estate, sales and income taxes will no longer be necessary. Although tripling the property tax bill will alarm many, it will be compensated by no state sales tax (highest at 10.0%) and income tax (highest rate at 13.3%). Eliminating the income tax will increase take home pay for everyone. The state will appear more attractive than its neighboring states and thus, draw new businesses, create jobs, and trigger an influx of talented workers. There were many things in the movie that messed with one s mind and made them see or believe things that weren t there. Camera angles, lighting, and the tone of a character s voice can help add suspense to a film. Also, the amount of irony that was in the film made the viewer be on their toes the whole time. The Silence of the Lambs could possibly make one have nightmares or be afraid of certain things because of the way the film was portrayed. The setting of a film can play a huge part of adding suspense or creating a mood for the film right off the bat. When The Silence of the Lambs first started Clarice Starling was running through the woods in the early morning and it was foggy outside. Also, she was alone and suddenly an officer came out of the woods. That alone can add suspense because we had no idea was she was running from or for and then someone shows up. The Food Safety Is A Highly Overlooked Essay Food safety is a highly overlooked yet crucial aspect of the food industry, as evident in the deadly 1993 Escherichia Coli outbreak in multiple Jack in the Box locations. Escherichia Coli is prevalent in raw and undercooked ground beef, which is a common food item on the Jack in the Box menu; the bacterial contamination during the slaughtering process of the meat lead to this gut wrenching epidemic (Wiley 2013). The horrific E. coli outbreak could have been prevented if it were not for Jack in the Box s meat supplier Vons, Foodmaker s vice president of technical services Ken Dunkley, and Jack in the Box s President Bob Nungent. The 1993 Jack in the Box E. Coli outbreak could have been prevented firstly if the contaminated meat itself had never set foot in a single Jack in the Box establishment. It was made evident upon an interview with Jack in the Box s President Bob Nugent that the testing that was done on that particular batch of meat indicated that it had high levels of E. coli. It is their responsibility to notify us if there s any potential hazard with a product. We were notified of those high levels of E. coli after the outbreak. • 11. Analyzing the Surprise Ending in Descartes Discourse on... Surprise Ending in Descartes In the book Discourses on the Method and the Meditations, author Rene Descartes famously questions the existence of humanity. His most famous quotation, the one for whom he is most remembered is I think therefore I am (Descartes 11). According to this idea, so long as a being has the ability to think then they existed. Animals have brains and therefore they must exist. In order to truly, exist, to be a thinking entity, a person or organism must utilize the ability granted to them by their mind. This is the focus of much of this text, the nature of existence and the line between what is true and what we only imagine or perceive to be true. For the majority of the text, the philosopher asks questions in trying to formulate his own identity and indeed whether or not he existed as all. It would be assumed that the end of the book would be a conclusion of this internal dialogue where Descartes definitively states his position on human existence. However, Descartes instead devotes the end of the text to a wholly new concept: namely he applies the question of existence to a being above humanity. At the end of the text, instead of continuing on with these questions Descartes instead discusses the idea of God and whether or not He exists. At the time of the Royal Society which Descartes was a member of, the researchers and philosophers were trying to understand everything about the world, something which actually is impossible to do. • 14. Analysis Of The Sun Also Rises By Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway is celebrated as one of the greatest 20th century novelists. Penning roughly twenty seven novels throughout his lifetime, Hemingway declared that a writer s job was to tell the truth, (Bloom, pg 10). It was through this belief that he often drew upon worldly experiences and events as well as personal happenings and musings to create his works. In his 1926 novel, The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway utilizes and references his time spent as Red Cross volunteer in Italy, his adventures in Pamplona, Spain, and his profound love for alcohol to fuel the adventures of Jake Barnes and his assorted company throughout the novel, focusing on underlying themes of alcoholism, personal rebellion, and sensuality. Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, to a privileged and well off family, but he never met the expectations set for him by his family. While he often reflected upon his own life experiences as a material for his writing, oddly enough, he never wrote of his hometown (Bloom, 10). Hemingway was a traveler and a ladies man, having married four different women over the course of his life and spending his time between novels traveling the world. It was mentioned only in passing and was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in my thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are who you pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we might like to think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare ourselves to others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists independently of that personal ideal. The assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition, but they become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged. This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this essay at least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some works which we have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually unwise to look at the main character. Although that is the main place to find character development, it wouldn t be a good novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors. The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever despised Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a character who we see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. For more than a century, Coca Cola and Pepsi have maintained growth and large market shares through mastering five competitive forces, shown in Exhibit 2, that drive profitability and shape the industry structure. While this support can be viewed positively, both Coca Cola and Pepsi have acquired its bottling franchises due to their dissatisfaction over the operational effectiveness of its bottling business. Through the last few decades, Coca Cola and Pepsi have oscillated between acquiring and re franchising its partner bottling businesses. Rivalry: The rivalry between Coca Cola and Pepsi is extremely high; however, both companies continue to remain profitable. Prior to the 1980s, pricing wars negatively affected profitability for Coca Cola and Pepsi. These left over tailings create human and ecological health problems that can be caused from exposure to the dust that are blown from these mine sites since metal toxicants can persist in tailing particles (arizona.edu, 2008). Another threat to the environment is acid mine drainage (also known as acid rock drainage). Acid mine drainage is the outflow of acidic water from a mining site. This acid is formed by the oxidation of iron sulfide. The oxidation occurs when iron sulfide is exposed to the air or to dissolved oxygen in the water, which causes the iron to rust and the sulfur reacts with the water to forum sulfuric acid (Coil, D., McKittrick, E., and Higman, B., 2010). Figure 2 illustrates the sulfuric acid that is formed. Acid mine drainage is most common with hardrock mines where metal ore is bound together with sulfur. The increased acidity created from acid mine drainage has a series of negative effects, depending on the severity of change in the pH level. The acid mine drainage creates inhospitable environments to aquatic life in river systems and former mine sites, with the exception of extremophile bacteria (Coil, D., McKittrick, E., and Higman, B., 2010). Acid mine drainage can severely degrade the quality of the water, especially if it s a essential water supply. Solutions There are two primary methods of preventing acid mine drainage fall. One is preventing sulfuric acid from forming, and the other is neutralizing the acid after it forms. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England. Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. • 33. Eating Meat Ethics In many societies, most people today consume meat and other types of food that came from an animal, yet there is a growing controversial debate regarding whether or not it is ethically right to eat any kind of animal. A commonly used argument against eating meat is that it is not necessary to survive or improve your health by eating meat and killing animals just for the sake of the taste that eating meat gives, is unjustifiably wrong. Those against eating meat also believe that the meat production resembles animal husbandry and it is one of the many alarming concerns involving animal welfare and their rights. Those in support of eating meat have responded with cultural, nutritional, scientific, and religious reasoning for their support of meat eating. Some meat eaters will not consume animal flesh if the animal is killed cruelly in a factory farm slaughterhouses or avoiding particular meats such as fois gras. A pioneer of the animal liberation movement, Peter Singer stated that it is possible to live healthy and survive without the consumption of any animal byproducts, which would cause harm to these animals. The trade in art, fine art, antiques and antiquities is not portrayed as a violent crime or illicit market and generally does not come off as a threat to international security. However, because of the large, increasing demand for antiquities, politically unstable source nations rich with cultural artifacts are exploited, prompting illicit activity in the clandestine art world, which is becoming an increasing concern. Terrorist organizations profit from the large financial volume of such low risk, high profit illicit activities and engage in cultural erosion that leaves the source nations weak in cultural identity. This in turn, allows terrorist groups the advantage of pursuing and shaping ideological notions in such volatile nations. The illicit, clandestine art market is also a unique market in which to create backdoor channels to organized crime, weapon trafficking and narcotic smuggling trade routes. The art market is attracting attention due to some of the recent, notably high sales prices; unfortunately, such a profitable return rate from art sales provides enticement for terrorist groups to participate. The link of terrorism turns the subject of cultural property from a disputable matter in foreign relations to a matter with significant implications pertaining to international security. The Success Of Project Portfolio Management Jeffrey Pinto defines project portfolio management as, the systematic process of selecting, supporting, and managing a firm s collection of projects. (p. 92). Many large firms can have multiple projects going on at the same time. These projects might support each other or can be stand alone projects. This essay will examine the keys to successful project portfolio management and analyze the key difficulties in successfully implementing them. The success of project portfolio management is determined by three key factors. The factors include: flexible structure and freedom of communication, low cost environmental scanning, and time paced transition. Projects that involve difficult channels of communication can be very difficult to develop. The projects that involve lots of red tape and other levels of administration can hinder them from meeting milestones and can be doomed to fail from the beginning. One of the main keys to a projects success is communication. Pinto writes, Successful portfolios emerge from environments that foster flexibility and open communication. When project teams are allowed to improvise and experiment on existing product lines, innovative new product ideas are more likely to emerge. (p. 95). This open communication and flexibility allows team members to voice their concerns when issues arise and allow them to come up with alternatives freely with having to get approval from project leaders or management.
