Julia Alverez s The Mother and Sandra Cisneros s Woman Hollering Creek are fictional short stories
that explore various hardships of adult life and immigration. The stories have their individual
differences, but in the end they both argue that while trauma can crack people s foundations, with the
strength of will and love, people can endure. In The Mother, the narrator and her family have fled their
home country, the Dominican Republic, because of the country s dictatorship. The narrator, Laura,
describes those years as a series of disappearing friends, sleepless nights, house arrest and only after a
narrow escape did they escape from that world to America (2758). Their new worry is that
immigration will send them back to that traumatic life. The last bit of action in the short story is Laura
s meeting with the social worker, Sally O Brien. The main setting is America, and vignettes of Laura s

In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse

I Choose Maus by Art Spiegleman
I chose Maus by Art Spiegleman. To be honest, I learned about the book from a television show,
Comic Book Men. They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my
interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an autobiography
about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it. The son learning of
his father s story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his heritage and the
journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I jumped at the
opportunity.
Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This novel in
particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of mice. The
novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is divided into five
chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was completed with the second
portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a labor of love and a tribute to his
father.
There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple s troubles, competition of dead
loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son

Reflection Paper On Inequality
The lecture presented in class (Inequality in Education and Employment) was a particularly salient
topic for me. As part of my Bachelor s degree, in Philosophy, I was required to present and defend a
thesis. My thesis was a defense of democracy from the problems of distributive justice. Over the
course of two years, I spent countless hours reading, writing, and debating the fine points on
inequality. Therefore, the subject matter is not something new for me, nor do I think there is a simple
solution.
Reflecting on the information from the lecture, there were various aspects of inequality that coincided
with my research; however, there were two areas that I thought required further consideration and
contemplation. First, nowhere in the slides, in the lecture, nor in the discussions, was justice
mentioned. I find that particularly odd as the preliminary point of any inquiry into inequality should
start from the structural foundations of equality viz., justice.
Second, I was slightly confused by the slide (23) titled Workers with Disabilities Earn Less Than Their
Peers . The slide indicated that people with disabilities (PWDs) earned 37% less pay than people
without disabilities (PWODs). While I looked at the slide s bar graph, I could visually see that the
37% figure did not match what was on the graph. This forced me to do some quick math on what was
represented. According to the values on the slide, the actual wage gap was 21%. While this is still
