rocks and meadows. Its cliffs are made out of smooth granite, which are crystallized igneous rock.

during this early American period it s known that the colonial people in Massachusetts had their
beliefs set on the puritan way of life and living. Furthermore, these colonial people who settled in the
Massachusetts Bay colony didn t expect there life to be disrupted through attacks taken place.
Through the experience of one woman, A Narrative of the Captivity by Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, an
American colonial women, accurately depicts historical record of the attacks made of the King Philips
war and her being held for ransom eleven weeks in its descriptions of the brutalities and godliness
which sets the tone between what is truth and what is contradictory in the eyes of Rowlandson and the
native Americans. Moreover, through this war fueled battle the colonial people felt as if their colony
was disrupted and attacked. Not to mention, how the natives felt, particularly the Wampanoag tribe.

The extra legal nature of executions in colonial times met the public s desire for an active role in
society and for the conservation of values. As societies modernized, the culture of execution being a
public communal event dissipated (Pfeifer). It wasn t until racial slavery positioned Black people on
the outskirts of normal law and legitimized extra legal violence, that a re emergence of collective and
communal violence occurred. The conditions of slavery allowed the United States, particularly the
southern colonies, to revisit collective violence. Furthermore, it made necessary an imposed draconian
regime of punishment. Colonies adopted a separate penal code and fixed slavery as permanent (Berg).
In the criminal justice arena, the slave codes could not be restricted by traditional English law. It was a
loophole to creating a private violence that Whites could inflict on Blacks.
Colonial slavery contributed to the later rise of lynching. For one, the nature of slavery positioned
African Americans as objects of hyper violence that was recognized under law. Furthermore, it
designated the responsibility of subordinating slaves as a collective effort from the community. It
rendered Whites as the overseers or the community hegemon above slaves. Lastly, once slavery was
abolished, Whites could not be permitted to use violence against Blacks. This resulted in Whites
swearing to uphold the duty of maintaining White superiority by all means necessary.

The Yellow Wallpaper tells a single story, with a tight focus on a specific fictional woman, but the
circumstances it drew from for its depiction were widespread. The events it depicts, while they may
not have occurred exactly in reality, were written in parallel to true conditions and treatments of the
time. Women were seen as inherently fragile, and subject to specific conditions due to this fragility

This calls back to both the prevalence of hysteria itself as a diagnosis of women, and perhaps the
beginnings of its discrediting in the 20th century, as John seems to believe the hysteria with which he
has diagnosed his wife is a condition of little concern. I can strongly relate to this dismissal, as my
father has for most of my life refused to acknowledge my depression as a real condition requiring
