The Effects Of Secondhand Smoke On Campus
It is critical to protect students and employees of universities from exposure to the perilous effects of
secondhand smoke. Efforts such as easily ignored no smoking signs or free Nicotine patches are not as
effective as anticipated; one must be motivated to quit smoking in order to actually quit. Therefore,
actions must be taken in order to efficiently transition into a tobacco free campus and ultimately
salvage the health of both smokers and nonsmokers on campus. By fall 2015, this university will
transition to a Tobacco Free Campus, which means that anyone who comes onto school grounds is
prohibited from using tobacco products to provide a healthy, safe educational setting and workplace
for both students and employees. With that said, the university is adopting a method introduced by the
American Cancer Society called The Great American Smokeout. However, the event will be renamed
Cut the Cancer Stick.
Students who smoke will be able to participate in this 24 hour challenge: a day on campus solely
dedicated to be supportive of our peers who may want to kick the habit of smoking but do not have the
support, motivation, or resources to do so. Since the American Cancer Society dedicates the third
Thursday of November to The Great American Smokeout each year, our first event will respectively
be held on November 20th, 2014. However, due to the fact that the university will be transitioned into
a tobacco free campus by this time next year, the university will hold

The Cholera Spread In London In The 19th Century
The cholera has been the most terrifying disease spreading in London in the middle of nineteenth
century, which is an infection caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In the summertime
of 1854 London was known as one of the most advanced and fashionable cities in the world with
almost 2.5 million people living there. Because of the overpopulation, the city was having a difficult
time to provide basic needs for the residents. According to Johnson (2006) the biggest existing
problem within the city at that time was its lack of waste removal system. The human trash was piling
up from the houses to the rivers and drinking water, which has led to the perfect conditions for a
number of diseases and more precisely that is when the cholera ... Show more content on

After interviewing more people who had relatives died, Snow find out that many people drank water
from Broad Street Pump on their way to work or school. Johnson (2006) says, Many Soho residents
who lived closer to other pumps one on Rupert Street and another on Little Marlborough opted to
walk an extra few blocks for the refreshing taste of Broad Street`s water. It was colder than the water
found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30). He also discovered that there
was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely
seen to drink water from the pump because of the liquor they received as a part of their wages
(Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important observation Snow has made is about the death of the
widow Susanna Eley who used to live in Broad Street, but after a while she moved to Hampstead
(Johnson, 2006, p.143). By asking her sons Snow found out that she drank the Broad Street water as
she loved it taste and even more, she had it delivered to the new house. After collecting all this
information Snow had strong evidence that the source of the cholera outbreak was exactly the Broad
Street pump. He came up with a plan how to deal with the cholera outbreak and went to the Board of
St. James Parish where he convinced the local officials that the pump

Dependency on Technology in a Modern World
Dependency on Technology in a Modern World
Introduction
Technology has virtually defined the human condition since the early stages in the species evolution.
First there were rudimentary tools such as arrows and hammering utensils which allowed humans a far
great range in manipulating their environment. Further developments such as fire, clothing, and shelter
and so on changed the way humans lived and every aspect of their lives. Today s societies have more
advanced tools such as a laptop, IPod, GPS, cell phone, a seemingly infinite number of other gizmos
and gadgets that shape their lives. This essay will question whether these devices will add to our
wellbeing and improve our lives or if the development of technology has hit a threshold point in which
further developments are of little practical value or even of negative consequence.
Communications
Of all the advancements in technology from its inception, the advancement in communication has to
be one of the most revolutionary forces that have come about. People now can communicate with
nearly anyone else in the world for very little cost and instantaneously through a variety of mediums.
People are free to move around the globe and never lose contact with the people that they care about.
Students can live video chat with other student half way around the world and can even form
interactive classrooms with a wide range of participants. Professors can record a lecture that can be
hosted on a site for anyone to

Thrombus Symbolism
Thrombus can be defined as the aggregation of thrombocytes, fibrin, and RBCs that attaches to the
interior wall of a vessel, Thrombus aetiologies are listed in Virchow s triad which include,
hypercoagulability (thrombophilia), endothelial cell injury, and disturbed blood flow (stasis)..
Thrombosis in the arteries cause stroke or myocardial infarction, in veins it manifests as either deep
vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), DVT is usually situated in the deep veins of the
leg. Meanwhile PE is defined as thrombus breaking off the endothelium and travelling down blood
stream all the way into the lungs, possibly triggering hypoxia there.

Over the last 30 years, videos games have become very desirable for people of all ages, genders, and
race. With the rapid growth of technology these games have become very life like and some seem as if
your actually there in person. The rapid growth has made the video industry into a multi billon dollar
industry and this has created much controversy among the people because the games are becoming
very realistic, but also more violent. Since the creation of violent video games there have been
constant disputes to whether these games will increase violence in the player. Nevertheless, there have
been researches done to try and understand the correlation between video games and violence. These
researches haven t only showed that the violent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many acts of violent crimes have connected to young players and violent videos games. These young
players aren t supposed to be playing this game anyways. There is a reason these games are labeled
with the game rating. An 8 year old boy intentionally killed a 90 year old woman when he shot her in
the head inside a Louisiana mobile home after playing a violent video game, police said.
But the child won t be charged with a crime.
The boy fatally shot his elderly caregiver, Marie Smothers, after playing Grand Theft Auto IV a video
game critics often blame for promoting violence inside the mobile home at a Slaughter, La., trailer
park Thursday evening, police said. (Kemp)
I wonder why an 8 year kid is playing a game that has a label on it that clearly has a label print on to
the cover saying it is for people 18 years old and up. Here s a 8 year old boy who is barely capable of
thinking on his own and he s playing a game that he s 10 years to young to be playing. My really
question is how do you put that on the creators of the game? The game creators clearly put an age
restrictions on the game for a reason because the content is very influential for someone who isn t 18
or older. People over 18 year old person are able to think for them selves as where an 8 year is not.
When your 18 you have almost a complete understand of what s right and what s wrong. The

The Strangers That Came And Town By Ambrose Flack
Freedom is a birthright for all humans, we should always feel accepted to speak our minds and
be who we are. In his short story, The Strangers that Came to Town , Ambrose Flack is
showing that true freedom is about being accepted. He shows this through the characterization
of Mrs. Duvitch, Mr. Duvitch and Andy.
Mrs. Duvitch s quiet and reserved nature made her the ideal victim of rumors. The less people knew
about her the more room left for their imaginations. For example she is said to be the victim of an
obscure skin disease and that every morning she shook scales out of the bed sheet (3). The rumors
began to cease after her dinner party with Andy s family where her true nature began to be revealed.
Following the dinner party, Andy s mother invites her to a tea party
Where her delicate manners, and the fine needlework which engaged her, won the approval of the
local housewives who were present (15). Showing her embroidery skills helped her connect with the
ladies of the town. Embroidery is a way she expresses herself and after feeling comfortable with the
ladies she revealed that side of her. When she felt accepted by the ladies,
Mrs. Duvitch was finally confident enough to invite them to her house. After a while Mrs.
Duvitch found courage to ask these people into her house (16). Opening our homes to someone takes a
great deal of trust. Our homes are our safe place where we can be ourselves.
To the Duvitch s their home meant a lot more to them

Persuasive Essay On Welfare
Welfare in the America is the government s attempt to help out the citizens that were and are
struggling financially in life. They provide cash and other benefits to people who are deemed
necessary of assistance. The idea behind the system is very good, it s to help people get back on their
feet so they can be a productive member of society. This includes finding work, providing for a family,
and maybe even giving back to the community. The problem is that there are a lot of holes that are
easily taken advantage of in the current system. It has gotten to the point where some people today
even call it a broken system. There a few simple changes that I think could definitely make a big
difference.
For starters, I think that it would be a good idea to occasionally drug test people that receive welfare
benefits. Not that it is really any of our business to know about that, but I do think that is is unfair of
people to apply for welfare and then spend all of that money on drugs and even alcohol. I would
assume that there is probably a law protecting this from happening, but if you need welfare then you
should put the money to good use. Spending the money on drugs is cheating the system, and is hurting
our society much more than it is helping it. I think that is one big hole in the system that needs to be
addressed in one way or another. Even if it not an easy fix, I think that is would be worth looking into
a little deeper. I m sure that this option has been evaluated at some

Federalism On Marijuana
Federalism is a government system in which sovereignty is divided and often shared between a
national government and or more sub national government. In America, we have and still have debates
about conflict about sovereignty in American politics between a state government and the federal
government. A current day example would be conflicting state and federal laws on marijuana.
Marijuana has been decriminalized and even legalized in states such as Alaska, California, Colorado,
Oregon, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Washington State (Governing). Although some states
have legalized marijuana, it still remains illegal according to federal law under the Controlled
Substances Act of 1970 (Law Cornell). This creates a conflict in policies in

Trade Barriers From An Academic Standpoint
Trade Barriers
Allisa Bell
ECN500 Global Economics
Colorado State University Global Campus
Dr. Walter Vanpoolen
April 23, 2015 Trade Barriers From an academic standpoint, economists overall believe that free trade
would benefit the economy more than instituting tariffs and non tariff trade barriers. However, the
reality is quite different. Politically, tariffs help to strike a balance between social welfare and the
politicians goals. One theory is that campaign contributions are needed for re election; and to achieve
these funds, politicians will weigh this need against welfare reducing protection for industry lobbyists
(Magee, 2011). The models would suggest that the tariffs should actually be much higher than they are
due to the low efficiency cost of tariffs compared to the substantial gains provided for the producers
(Magee, 2011). However, developed countries actually have very low tariffs. There are six possible
explanations for why developed countries have such low tariffs when the political theories behind why
we have tariffs at all would suggest they should be higher.
Six Reasons for Low Tariffs There are six main reasons for the disparity realized between theory and
reality. These explanations would suggest that politicians are just not responsive to the lobbying
efforts, the welfare costs of the implemented tariffs are higher than anticipated, the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) successfully restrained trade barriers, free rider

80 s Fashion Trends Essay
The 1990 s was known to be one of American s favorite decades. It was a time period of grunge
music, great TV shows, fun toys and electronics, but out of all the amazing, popular trends in the 90 s,
my absolute, all time favorite is the fashion. Back in the 80 s, people were more dressed and dolled up,
but the 90 s generation was way more laid back when it came to clothing. There was a wide variety of
casual grunge filled with chokers, band tees, flannels, Doc Martens, and so much more. In the 1990 s
decade the biggest rock trend was Punk Rock music. The band that was considered the anthem of
Grunge was Nirvana, lead singer Kurt Cobain, in 1994 committed suicide. Everyone loved him and
was devastated. After his death, people started dressing in honor of the band and their music. ... Show

While the 80 s dress was more elaborate, the 90 s was more easygoing. The most common thing the
public wore was band T s, Doc Martens, baggy jeans, and flannels. There were some other accessories
such as Jansport backpacks, Baby G s, and big watches were a big deal; also tattoo chokers, the more
you wore, the more popular you were. Overalls were pretty vogue as well, but make sure one strap is
undone! As I mentioned earlier, Cobain s death had a huge impact in the 90 s. Apparel was mostly
influenced by the music at the time. Grunge clothing was already in the rage before the suicide of Kurt
Cobain, but after that, society made sure to carry on this course for remembrance and in honor of the
lead singer. Most people would say they miss this time period. The fashion is coming back in style. I
mean, hey, I m wearing a flannel at this moment. Personally, I wish I grew up in the 90 s. The clothing
style was pretty broad and casual while very grungy. But, it wasn t all dark and hard rock; it was more
of a soft grunge. Need a better visual? Think of the old TV shows such as

The American Of The White Americans Essay
The strong will of the white Americans lead to many different races of people changing their ideas
because of what was being exerted on them. In dealing with the other races Americans had many
opposed views and different ideas for their cultures and also their sufficiency of self government.
Americans in the nineteenth century used domestic policy to culturally deprive the newly freed slaves
and the American Indians, then in the early twentieth century Americans used newly gained power and
foreign policy to help and rule over the Philippines and the people who inhabited there. America is no
stranger to imposing their own ideas onto other people and even other places. Slaves once freed really
were not free at all. Many things still inhibited them into starting their own independent lives. White
Americans were a big one, the placement of black codes, negative perceptions of the Freedman s
Bureau and just the view of African Americans in general all prohibited black slaves to live their lives
the way they wanted to. Rather they were required to live how the white men wanted them to live. The
Americans had the attitude of being above and better than the African Americans, their negativity and
deprivation of blacks led to America being unable to progress for a long while. Document 12.9 in

History And Development Of Nursing Education
Comparing Nursing Education in Ireland and China Lakeisha Alexander Florida International
University Introduction The countries that I have chosen to research are Ireland and China. I chose
Ireland because while I was in high school there was an opportunity to study abroad in the country; I
was unable to participate in the program but was curious about what receiving an education there
would be like. My opinion of nursing education in Ireland is that it s at a basic level and not as
advanced as the nursing education you would receive in the United States. The other country that I
have chosen to research is China and this is because I think that they are advanced in technology and
because of their advancement the nursing education should be more progressive than in the United
States. Ireland and China are two different countries that have gone through tremendous strides to
bring about a successful nursing education system. Political History and Development of Nursing
Education Ireland. Nursing in Ireland begun in the 1950 1970 with the apprenticeship model, in the
model new nurses were trained on the job by more experienced nurses (O Dwyer, 2007). The

Gender Labeling Research Paper
Throughout history, some babies have always been born with ambiguous genitalia, partially formed
sex organs, micro organs, or organs of both sexes. This was either due to deviations in the anatomical
development of the fetus and because of exposure during fetal gestation to hormones and chemicals.
To describe such people, sexologists have gradually begun to use the more neutral term intersex
children or children with developmental sex disorders. However, various ethical issues come in light
as these children grow into adults or when physicians assign a gender to babies following the
traditional view of gender labeling means a happy adjustment in school, in the family, and in society.
Intersex and transsexual labeling especially create problems in sports where athletes must compete
with as female or male. Transgender differs from intersex such that transgender people feel they live
in a body of the wrong gender hence seeking hormone therapy while intersex have abnormal sex
organs. Both kinds of people want the right to choose their gender and may seek hormones and
surgery to do so. One such example is an ophthalmologist Richard Raskind who underwent surgery to
become Rene Richards and competed on the professional women s tennis circuit creating a huge
controversy. Another example is of South African runner Caster Semenya, ... Show more content on

Commercial roofing isn t very different from residential roof work. The commercial types may have
less style, but structurally, both require equal attention. The architecture of residential roofs is based
more on design. Commercial roof work requires more attention to the materials that will last longer,
provide more ventilation and protect vital equipment and costly material. Commercial roofing
includes coverings of garages, storage facilities or small manufacturing units. Shops have roofs much
like the residential ones, maybe even more eye catching. This is because though shops are commercial
units, everything about them needs to be glamorous. To elaborate what specifics of commercial

Nathan Bedford Forrest During The Civil War And...
Nathan Bedford Forrest was a very influential leader during the Civil War and African American
movement. Lincoln came to power during the time around the Civil War and guided the events that
took place during that time as well. However, Lincoln had more influence over the Union because of
his leadership and position as president. Lincoln s position as president gave him more power that
Forrest would never have. Though they both had strong qualities that made them successful during
that era, Lincoln s surpassed them all. Considering each man s background, coming from a humble
family and both without an education, they became very successful and motivational symbols to the
citizens at the time. Individually, they encouraged unity and progression in the growth of the American
society.
Lincoln encouraged unity and equality, as did Forrest, but in his own way. Lincoln was a true advocate
for all races to be equal, though he agreed the white race was the superior race. I am not, nor ever have
been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black
races, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of
qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this
that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever
forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality ... I will

mankind s own fragility through the felling of the trees because of the speaker s emphasis on the
contrast between nature and its destruction and the way nature and humans are associated with the use
of imagery and figurative language. I will first examine the poem s sorrowful tone and the way the

The speaker uses this event to expand his view on the way mankind destroys nature without meaning
to. In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage, as seen in O if
we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end her (16). By using
the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but also the reader, who is
also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However, humans are not only the agent
of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled,
are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover,
there is a personification of nature throughout the poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman,
as said in Since country is so tender / To touch, her being so slender (12 13) and To mend her we end
her (17). Whereas there are some neutral correlations between human beings and the natural world,
they are also linked through the pain and damage that is inflicted to them. Hack rack (11) are
originally aimed at the growing green (11). However, those verbs are associated to prick (15) and
sleek (14) as well due to the consonance of the sound ck . As a consequence of that association, the
sleek and seeing ball (14), the human eye (15), feels the brutality of the tree felling,

Addiction In Brave New World
In 1981, the iconic video game character, Mario, flashed on television screens made possible by the
Nintendo Entertainment System, marking the beginning of video games taking over the globe. The
retro, pixel interfaces of video games quickly strides to advance its graphics, gameplay and quality,
becoming an ambitious industry as the years continue on. In the early 1900s, this was an unreal
thought by society from the technology at the time, including a man named Aldous Huxley. The author
of the novel Brave New World, published in 1932, Huxley creates a dystopian science fiction novel in
which a futuristic society must be stabilized, kept together by conditioning the individual. The novel
bares a resemblance to advancing technology in the modern day world, particularly the video game
industry. As the visuals of games continue to become more realistic and engaging gameplay created by
the companies, it presents simulated worlds where the player will get lost in. Real life becomes non

Whether gambling, alcohol or shopping, it is surprising to find video games being a part of this
growing list. Video game addiction is a growing epidemic that is running rampant through the world,
including parts of Asia. Death from video games is becoming more common and sounds like a horror
story (Flanagan). Contributing to the increase are illnesses and social disorders, two well known
conditions being social anxiety and depression. By shutting themselves out from the real world, the
only light being the screen of their television or computer and eyes glued to the screen, their basic
needs are ignored. Sitting in a chair for hours on end, the body deteriorates from negligence. The
different video game genres help fulfill basic psychological needs too, but can lead to a secret
underlying problem. Playing for days can certainly feel like a medication taken everyday and life

Marijuana Should be Legalized for Medical and Recreational...
JJ is a 7 year old boy. He has post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and impulse control
disorder. He has been thrown out of numerous preschools and admitted to several hospitals for
psychiatric issues. His mother has pursued all forms of medical and behavioral help for her son s
hyperactivity and aggressiveness. She came across medical marijuana while trying to research JJ s
problems and after discussing it with his doctors decided to give it a try. She took him off all his
medications and put the marijuana in a muffin in amounts prescribed and monitored by the doctor. JJ s
behavior issues declined almost immediately. He is polite, eager to learn and interacts well with

The hemp plant and marijuana has been around for a long time and has had a variety of purposes.
What is marijuana and how is it consumed?
Marijuana is a greenish gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of
Cannabis sativa the hemp plant. (Drugabuse.gov, 2012). It is a naturally occurring plant. It can be
consumed by smoking it, eating it or brewing the leaves into a tea (Drugabuse.gov, 2012). The
preferred method of ingestion is by smoking. Once it is inhaled into the lungs it enters the blood
stream and moves quickly throughout the body eventually making it to the brain.
What physical and mental effects does marijuana have on a person?
Smoking or ingesting marijuana creates a euphoric effect for the user. The effects can range from
being in a mellow or calm mood to sleepiness. Users also exhibit an inability or lack of desire to use
critical thought processes and show little or no motivation to complete normal activities of daily
living. The active ingredient in marijuana that causes these effects is THC or Delta 9
tetrahydrocannabinol (Drugabuse.gov, 2012, July). According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse,
THC binds to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) located on the surface of [the brain]
nerve cells. These receptors are found in high density in areas of the brain that influence pleasure,

Life And Life Of Prison
Twenty years to life in prison, this is what I woke up to one cold December morning. I had been
falsely accused of a crime. It all started a couple of weeks ago. I had gone to the local gas station to
pick up some groceries to fix my family a surprise breakfast. I had planned to go home and fix them
eggs, bacon, waffles, and grits. It would have been perfect, just to have a family meal. I had arrived at
the gas station and proceeded to go into the store to get the groceries that I needed. All of sudden a
man with the gun entered the store. He told the man to give him all the money in the cash register as
he shot at some bottles behind the counter. After the clerk had finished loading the bag, he threw it on
the ground, and without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The judge read to me the accusation that were made against me, and asked for the evidence to be
presented. They had taken the store s surveillance videos, and said that they had video evidence of
what had happened. The judge then asked the cop to play the video, but there was a problem. The
video had been encrypted with a password, and without the password, the video could not be watched.
The judge ruled that this evidence was irrelevant until it could be used. The judge asked if there was
any evidence to be presented. They had one more witness that went to the stand. The other attorney
asked what he remembered about the morning of December 3, 2034. He said that he remembered
being in the gas station, and seeing me beside the body (8th amendment) When I was back in the jail
cell, I decided to ask him what the bail had been set at. He said that there was no bail. He told me that
I had been indicted, and I would be going to my arraignment next. I just kept thinking of my family,
and that I had to do everything in my power to get out of here. I asked the cop also if someone had
picked up my car.(4th amendment) He said it can be picked up as soon as it has been searched. I
immediately asked if there was a warrant. He said that there was, and to get some sleep. He said that
tomorrow would be a long day. The next morning they came to me and wanted to make a deal. They
said just plead guilty, and they would let me off with second

Disadvantages Of Incremental Model
4. INCREMENTAL MODEL. This model involves continues user feedback and interactions resulting
in a product that is much closer to user expectations. The development is built up from an initial
Prototype that is continuously being developed and tested. The requirements of the incremental model
is divided into various builds where multiple development cycles take place. This creates a multi
waterfall cycle and the cycles are divided up into smaller, more easily managed modules. Each
module passes through the requirements, design, implementation and testing phases. A working

Hair Removal Research Paper
Hair removal can be a pain, both literally and figuratively. Not only does it take continuous time and
effort, but over the years, the cost adds up. What if we could tell you that we now have a permanent
hair removal solution right from within our own office? That s right: we now offer electrolysis! After a
series of treatments, all of your problematic hair growth will be an issue of the past. Welcome to the
new, glowing you!
What is it?
This procedure is for permanent hair removal. If you, like many people, have heard it s not possible to
permanently remove your unwanted hair, we are happy to disprove this myth! Not to be confused with
laser hair removal, this is completely permanent and effective on every skin and hair type. With the
insertion of a probe, a slight electric current is transmitted right into each of your hair follicles. The
current destroys the hair matrix and the dermal papillae of the follicle, effectively eliminating hair
growth. Aestheticians work on one hair strand at a time, which means that it is a slow process, but you
ll never have to remove the area of hair again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persepolis Analysis
In Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel, Persepolis, the protagonist, Marji, faces hardships and conflict as a
woman in Iran. When discussing conflict that Marji faces, politics is one topic that stands out the
most. Growing up in a war torn and corrupt country, Marji is exposed to violence at a young age and
is forced to mature quickly. As she grows older she experiments during a period of rebellion and
temporarily leaves her home country in an effort to find herself. However, much later, she circles back
to Iran and comes home to the same crumbling and oppressive system she has always resented. Even
though Marji may change as she travels to new places, grows older, and experiments with her self
expression, her constant strife with the Islamic Regime s political ideology remains.
Although Marji begins as an outspoken and confident young girl, she quickly has to adjust to the harsh
rules of society. Marji s first conflict arises when she is forced to wear a veil in school. One frame
shows her and all of her classmates playing different kinds of childish games with the veils they were
forced to wear. In one corner, a girl is jump roping with a veil, and in another corner, two girls are
faking an execution (Satrapi, 3, fr. 5). This is because Marji and her classmates do not understand why
they have veils and undermine the authoritative power by playing with them. Although a small event
in the novel, this mini revolt sets a precedent for Marji s actions in response to the regime s rules as
she grows older. Later in the story, she is inspired to join the revolution and make a change after
seeing her parents protesting. On one night, an audacious Marji storms into her parents room and
exclaims, I want to come with you tomorrow! To demonstrate on the street. I am sick and tired of
doing it in the garden. For a revolution to succeed, the entire population must support it (Satrapi, 16
17). Marji s eloquent words are that of someone who is willing to sacrifice his/herself to make change
in a corrupt system. In return for dealing with such heavy political issues, Marji is passionate about
protesting and expressing her disdain for the Iranian government. Though Marji eventually decides to
leave Iran for a short period of

The Broadway Cafe
Cohesion Case
In order for our business, The Broadway Café, to become more competitive in this environment, I
deem it necessary to build a collaboration tool that will stimulate contact, knowledge, information, and
events among employees, customers, suppliers, and all others who are interested in the business.
A collaboration system is an IT based set of tools that supports the work of teams by facilitating the
sharing and flow of information. Collaboration systems allow people, teams, and organizations to
leverage and build upon the ideas and talents of staff, suppliers, customers, and business partners.
A collaboration tool that I believe would fulfill our needs at The Broadway Café would be a

Factors that can limit the threat of new entrants are known as barriers to entry. In this case barriers to
entry are low because: there is no government intervention to prevent businesses from entering the
industry, resources are abundant, and customers switching costs are low as well as fixed costs to start
this type of business.
Rivalry among existing competitors describes the intensity of competition between Broadway s Café
and existing coffee shops in an industry. A highly competitive industry might result from many players
of about the same size, on single dominant competitor, little differentiation between competitors
products and services
The differentiation strategy aims at creating a service that is unique. The key is to be viewed as
valuable by the customer. According to Porter corporations should not focus their corporate energy
into being better than their competitors, instead, try to be different. Benchmarking the competitor can
result in what Porter describes as the competitive convergence, where, to the customer, everyone looks
like everyone else. For Broadway s Café to stay competitive in 21st century their strategy should be
about performing different activities from rivals or similar activities differently.

Essay on The Leisure Class
Felicia Henry Nailon
Veblen, Thorstein. (1899). The Theory of The Leisure Class. New York: The Macmillan Company.
Authors Purpose
Thorstein Veblen initiated a new approach to economic theory that took account of evolving social and
institutional contexts and considered their human implications. In his examination of the leisure class,
he looks at non economic features of their social life. In this economic analysis he probes the
beginning of time and travels down through history to discover the origin of the leisure class.
Specific Areas to Be Covered
Veblen examines the demand and consumption of the upper classes of society in terms that are not
traditionally used in economics. In using terms such as conspicuous consumption, ... Show more

The standards are determined by conspicuous waste and workmanship. These and the predatory
animus shape the standard of life. (Veblen: 105) The wider the distance between the classes and the
slower the degree of class mobility, the slower the process of change. The standards are determined by
conspicuous waste and workmanship.
Conspicuous Consumption
Veblen notes that the common element of conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption is waste.
Conspicuous leisure represents a waste of time and effort, whereas conspicuous consumption
represents a waste of goods. Both are methods of demonstrating the possession of wealth and the two
are usually accepted as the same. There are at least two conceptions of conspicuous consumption in
the The Theory of the Leisure Class, these are:
(1) Conspicuous consumption characterized by particular end results or as a function.
(2) Conspicuous consumption as intention, motive, or instinct.
Thorsten Veblen s conspicuous consumption stems from the division of wealth that was infinitely
more obvious a hundred years ago when the divide between the haves and have nots was easier to
establish though the divide is in actuality even wider today. Thorsten Veblen s conspicuous
consumption grew from pecuniary emulation.
In order to gain and to hold the esteem of people it is not sufficient merely to possess wealth or power.
The wealth most be evident because esteem is only awarded on evidence.

  • 2. The Effects Of Secondhand Smoke On Campus It is critical to protect students and employees of universities from exposure to the perilous effects of secondhand smoke. Efforts such as easily ignored no smoking signs or free Nicotine patches are not as effective as anticipated; one must be motivated to quit smoking in order to actually quit. Therefore, actions must be taken in order to efficiently transition into a tobacco free campus and ultimately salvage the health of both smokers and nonsmokers on campus. By fall 2015, this university will transition to a Tobacco Free Campus, which means that anyone who comes onto school grounds is prohibited from using tobacco products to provide a healthy, safe educational setting and workplace for both students and employees. With that said, the university is adopting a method introduced by the American Cancer Society called The Great American Smokeout. However, the event will be renamed Cut the Cancer Stick. Students who smoke will be able to participate in this 24 hour challenge: a day on campus solely dedicated to be supportive of our peers who may want to kick the habit of smoking but do not have the support, motivation, or resources to do so. Since the American Cancer Society dedicates the third Thursday of November to The Great American Smokeout each year, our first event will respectively be held on November 20th, 2014. However, due to the fact that the university will be transitioned into a tobacco free campus by this time next year, the university will hold ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Cholera Spread In London In The 19th Century The cholera has been the most terrifying disease spreading in London in the middle of nineteenth century, which is an infection caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In the summertime of 1854 London was known as one of the most advanced and fashionable cities in the world with almost 2.5 million people living there. Because of the overpopulation, the city was having a difficult time to provide basic needs for the residents. According to Johnson (2006) the biggest existing problem within the city at that time was its lack of waste removal system. The human trash was piling up from the houses to the rivers and drinking water, which has led to the perfect conditions for a number of diseases and more precisely that is when the cholera ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After interviewing more people who had relatives died, Snow find out that many people drank water from Broad Street Pump on their way to work or school. Johnson (2006) says, Many Soho residents who lived closer to other pumps one on Rupert Street and another on Little Marlborough opted to walk an extra few blocks for the refreshing taste of Broad Street`s water. It was colder than the water found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30). He also discovered that there was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely seen to drink water from the pump because of the liquor they received as a part of their wages (Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important observation Snow has made is about the death of the widow Susanna Eley who used to live in Broad Street, but after a while she moved to Hampstead (Johnson, 2006, p.143). By asking her sons Snow found out that she drank the Broad Street water as she loved it taste and even more, she had it delivered to the new house. After collecting all this information Snow had strong evidence that the source of the cholera outbreak was exactly the Broad Street pump. He came up with a plan how to deal with the cholera outbreak and went to the Board of St. James Parish where he convinced the local officials that the pump ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Dependency on Technology in a Modern World Dependency on Technology in a Modern World Introduction Technology has virtually defined the human condition since the early stages in the species evolution. First there were rudimentary tools such as arrows and hammering utensils which allowed humans a far great range in manipulating their environment. Further developments such as fire, clothing, and shelter and so on changed the way humans lived and every aspect of their lives. Today s societies have more advanced tools such as a laptop, IPod, GPS, cell phone, a seemingly infinite number of other gizmos and gadgets that shape their lives. This essay will question whether these devices will add to our wellbeing and improve our lives or if the development of technology has hit a threshold point in which further developments are of little practical value or even of negative consequence. Communications Of all the advancements in technology from its inception, the advancement in communication has to be one of the most revolutionary forces that have come about. People now can communicate with nearly anyone else in the world for very little cost and instantaneously through a variety of mediums. People are free to move around the globe and never lose contact with the people that they care about. Students can live video chat with other student half way around the world and can even form interactive classrooms with a wide range of participants. With the rapid growth of technology these games have become very life like and some seem as if your actually there in person. The rapid growth has made the video industry into a multi billon dollar industry and this has created much controversy among the people because the games are becoming very realistic, but also more violent. Since the creation of violent video games there have been constant disputes to whether these games will increase violence in the player. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many acts of violent crimes have connected to young players and violent videos games. These young players aren t supposed to be playing this game anyways. There is a reason these games are labeled with the game rating. An 8 year old boy intentionally killed a 90 year old woman when he shot her in the head inside a Louisiana mobile home after playing a violent video game, police said. But the child won t be charged with a crime. The boy fatally shot his elderly caregiver, Marie Smothers, after playing Grand Theft Auto IV a video game critics often blame for promoting violence inside the mobile home at a Slaughter, La., trailer park Thursday evening, police said. (Kemp) I wonder why an 8 year kid is playing a game that has a label on it that clearly has a label print on to the cover saying it is for people 18 years old and up. Here s a 8 year old boy who is barely capable of thinking on his own and he s playing a game that he s 10 years to young to be playing. My really question is how do you put that on the creators of the game? The game creators clearly put an age restrictions on the game for a reason because the content is very influential for someone who isn t 18 or older. • 8. The Strangers That Came And Town By Ambrose Flack Freedom is a birthright for all humans, we should always feel accepted to speak our minds and be who we are. In his short story, The Strangers that Came to Town , Ambrose Flack is showing that true freedom is about being accepted. He shows this through the characterization of Mrs. Duvitch, Mr. Duvitch and Andy. Mrs. Duvitch s quiet and reserved nature made her the ideal victim of rumors. The less people knew about her the more room left for their imaginations. For example she is said to be the victim of an obscure skin disease and that every morning she shook scales out of the bed sheet (3). The rumors began to cease after her dinner party with Andy s family where her true nature began to be revealed. Following the dinner party, Andy s mother invites her to a tea party Where her delicate manners, and the fine needlework which engaged her, won the approval of the local housewives who were present (15). Showing her embroidery skills helped her connect with the ladies of the town. Embroidery is a way she expresses herself and after feeling comfortable with the ladies she revealed that side of her. When she felt accepted by the ladies, Mrs. Duvitch was finally confident enough to invite them to her house. After a while Mrs. Duvitch found courage to ask these people into her house (16). Opening our homes to someone takes a great deal of trust. Our homes are our safe place where we can be ourselves. To the Duvitch s their home meant a lot more to them ... • 9. Persuasive Essay On Welfare Welfare in the America is the government s attempt to help out the citizens that were and are struggling financially in life. They provide cash and other benefits to people who are deemed necessary of assistance. The idea behind the system is very good, it s to help people get back on their feet so they can be a productive member of society. This includes finding work, providing for a family, and maybe even giving back to the community. The problem is that there are a lot of holes that are easily taken advantage of in the current system. It has gotten to the point where some people today even call it a broken system. There a few simple changes that I think could definitely make a big difference. For starters, I think that it would be a good idea to occasionally drug test people that receive welfare benefits. Not that it is really any of our business to know about that, but I do think that is is unfair of people to apply for welfare and then spend all of that money on drugs and even alcohol. I would assume that there is probably a law protecting this from happening, but if you need welfare then you should put the money to good use. Spending the money on drugs is cheating the system, and is hurting our society much more than it is helping it. I think that is one big hole in the system that needs to be addressed in one way or another. Even if it not an easy fix, I think that is would be worth looking into a little deeper. I m sure that this option has been evaluated at some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In America, we have and still have debates about conflict about sovereignty in American politics between a state government and the federal government. A current day example would be conflicting state and federal laws on marijuana. Marijuana has been decriminalized and even legalized in states such as Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Washington State (Governing). • 12. Trade Barriers From An Academic Standpoint Trade Barriers Allisa Bell ECN500 Global Economics Colorado State University Global Campus Dr. Walter Vanpoolen April 23, 2015 Trade Barriers From an academic standpoint, economists overall believe that free trade would benefit the economy more than instituting tariffs and non tariff trade barriers. However, the reality is quite different. Politically, tariffs help to strike a balance between social welfare and the politicians goals. One theory is that campaign contributions are needed for re election; and to achieve these funds, politicians will weigh this need against welfare reducing protection for industry lobbyists (Magee, 2011). The models would suggest that the tariffs should actually be much higher than they are due to the low efficiency cost of tariffs compared to the substantial gains provided for the producers (Magee, 2011). However, developed countries actually have very low tariffs. There are six possible explanations for why developed countries have such low tariffs when the political theories behind why we have tariffs at all would suggest they should be higher. Six Reasons for Low Tariffs There are six main reasons for the disparity realized between theory and reality. These explanations would suggest that politicians are just not responsive to the lobbying efforts, the welfare costs of the implemented tariffs are higher than anticipated, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) successfully restrained trade barriers, free rider ... • 13. 80 s Fashion Trends Essay The 1990 s was known to be one of American s favorite decades. It was a time period of grunge music, great TV shows, fun toys and electronics, but out of all the amazing, popular trends in the 90 s, my absolute, all time favorite is the fashion. Back in the 80 s, people were more dressed and dolled up, but the 90 s generation was way more laid back when it came to clothing. There was a wide variety of casual grunge filled with chokers, band tees, flannels, Doc Martens, and so much more. In the 1990 s decade the biggest rock trend was Punk Rock music. The band that was considered the anthem of Grunge was Nirvana, lead singer Kurt Cobain, in 1994 committed suicide. Everyone loved him and was devastated. After his death, people started dressing in honor of the band and their music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the 80 s dress was more elaborate, the 90 s was more easygoing. The most common thing the public wore was band T s, Doc Martens, baggy jeans, and flannels. There were some other accessories such as Jansport backpacks, Baby G s, and big watches were a big deal; also tattoo chokers, the more you wore, the more popular you were. Overalls were pretty vogue as well, but make sure one strap is undone! As I mentioned earlier, Cobain s death had a huge impact in the 90 s. Apparel was mostly influenced by the music at the time. Grunge clothing was already in the rage before the suicide of Kurt Cobain, but after that, society made sure to carry on this course for remembrance and in honor of the lead singer. Most people would say they miss this time period. The fashion is coming back in style. I mean, hey, I m wearing a flannel at this moment. Personally, I wish I grew up in the 90 s. • 14. The American Of The White Americans Essay The strong will of the white Americans lead to many different races of people changing their ideas because of what was being exerted on them. In dealing with the other races Americans had many opposed views and different ideas for their cultures and also their sufficiency of self government. Americans in the nineteenth century used domestic policy to culturally deprive the newly freed slaves and the American Indians, then in the early twentieth century Americans used newly gained power and foreign policy to help and rule over the Philippines and the people who inhabited there. America is no stranger to imposing their own ideas onto other people and even other places. Slaves once freed really were not free at all. Many things still inhibited them into starting their own independent lives. White Americans were a big one, the placement of black codes, negative perceptions of the Freedman s Bureau and just the view of African Americans in general all prohibited black slaves to live their lives the way they wanted to. Rather they were required to live how the white men wanted them to live. The Americans had the attitude of being above and better than the African Americans, their negativity and deprivation of blacks led to America being unable to progress for a long while. • 15. History And Development Of Nursing Education Comparing Nursing Education in Ireland and China Lakeisha Alexander Florida International University Introduction The countries that I have chosen to research are Ireland and China. I chose Ireland because while I was in high school there was an opportunity to study abroad in the country; I was unable to participate in the program but was curious about what receiving an education there would be like. My opinion of nursing education in Ireland is that it s at a basic level and not as advanced as the nursing education you would receive in the United States. The other country that I have chosen to research is China and this is because I think that they are advanced in technology and because of their advancement the nursing education should be more progressive than in the United States. Ireland and China are two different countries that have gone through tremendous strides to bring about a successful nursing education system. Political History and Development of Nursing Education Ireland. Nursing in Ireland begun in the 1950 1970 with the apprenticeship model, in the model new nurses were trained on the job by more experienced nurses (O Dwyer, 2007). The apprenticeship model was seen as not being financially sustainable in the 1950 1960, and Ireland was unable to create an alternative model of nursing education. • 16. Gender Labeling Research Paper Throughout history, some babies have always been born with ambiguous genitalia, partially formed sex organs, micro organs, or organs of both sexes. This was either due to deviations in the anatomical development of the fetus and because of exposure during fetal gestation to hormones and chemicals. To describe such people, sexologists have gradually begun to use the more neutral term intersex children or children with developmental sex disorders. However, various ethical issues come in light as these children grow into adults or when physicians assign a gender to babies following the traditional view of gender labeling means a happy adjustment in school, in the family, and in society. Intersex and transsexual labeling especially create problems in sports where athletes must compete with as female or male. Transgender differs from intersex such that transgender people feel they live in a body of the wrong gender hence seeking hormone therapy while intersex have abnormal sex organs. Both kinds of people want the right to choose their gender and may seek hormones and surgery to do so. One such example is an ophthalmologist Richard Raskind who underwent surgery to become Rene Richards and competed on the professional women s tennis circuit creating a huge controversy. Another example is of South African runner Caster Semenya, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Roman Catholic church was created when the Eastern and Western churches divided in 1054, with the Roman Catholic church coming from the Western church (Matlins). Lincoln came to power during the time around the Civil War and guided the events that took place during that time as well. However, Lincoln had more influence over the Union because of his leadership and position as president. Lincoln s position as president gave him more power that Forrest would never have. Though they both had strong qualities that made them successful during that era, Lincoln s surpassed them all. Considering each man s background, coming from a humble family and both without an education, they became very successful and motivational symbols to the citizens at the time. Individually, they encouraged unity and progression in the growth of the American society. Lincoln encouraged unity and equality, as did Forrest, but in his own way. In the poem Binsey Poplars written by Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1879, the speaker considers this issue while lamenting over the destruction of a line of poplar trees. In this essay, I will argue that the poem shows mankind s own fragility through the felling of the trees because of the speaker s emphasis on the contrast between nature and its destruction and the way nature and humans are associated with the use of imagery and figurative language. In the second and third stanzas, we are actually blamed for this irreversible damage, as seen in O if we but knew what we do / When we delve or hew (9 10) and To mend her we end her (16). By using the first person plural pronoun, the speaker includes not only themselves, but also the reader, who is also a human being, and in a general sense, part of mankind. However, humans are not only the agent of destruction, but the object of it as well. For instance, the repetition of the letter l in All felled, felled, are all felled (3) may form a visual representation of a line of trees, or a line of people. Moreover, there is a personification of nature throughout the poem; according to the speaker, nature is a woman, as said in Since country is so tender / To touch, her being so slender (12 13) and To mend her we end her (17). Whereas there are some neutral correlations between human beings and the natural world, they are also linked through the pain and damage that is inflicted to them. • 28. Persepolis Analysis In Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel, Persepolis, the protagonist, Marji, faces hardships and conflict as a woman in Iran. When discussing conflict that Marji faces, politics is one topic that stands out the most. Growing up in a war torn and corrupt country, Marji is exposed to violence at a young age and is forced to mature quickly. As she grows older she experiments during a period of rebellion and temporarily leaves her home country in an effort to find herself. However, much later, she circles back to Iran and comes home to the same crumbling and oppressive system she has always resented. Even though Marji may change as she travels to new places, grows older, and experiments with her self expression, her constant strife with the Islamic Regime s political ideology remains. Although Marji begins as an outspoken and confident young girl, she quickly has to adjust to the harsh rules of society. Marji s first conflict arises when she is forced to wear a veil in school. One frame shows her and all of her classmates playing different kinds of childish games with the veils they were forced to wear. In one corner, a girl is jump roping with a veil, and in another corner, two girls are faking an execution (Satrapi, 3, fr. 5). This is because Marji and her classmates do not understand why they have veils and undermine the authoritative power by playing with them. Although a small event in the novel, this mini revolt sets a precedent for Marji s actions in response to the regime s rules as she grows older. Later in the story, she is inspired to join the revolution and make a change after seeing her parents protesting. On one night, an audacious Marji storms into her parents room and exclaims, I want to come with you tomorrow! To demonstrate on the street. I am sick and tired of doing it in the garden. For a revolution to succeed, the entire population must support it (Satrapi, 16 17). Marji s eloquent words are that of someone who is willing to sacrifice his/herself to make change in a corrupt system. The standards are determined by conspicuous waste and workmanship. Conspicuous Consumption Veblen notes that the common element of conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption is waste. Conspicuous leisure represents a waste of time and effort, whereas conspicuous consumption represents a waste of goods. Both are methods of demonstrating the possession of wealth and the two are usually accepted as the same. There are at least two conceptions of conspicuous consumption in the The Theory of the Leisure Class, these are: (1) Conspicuous consumption characterized by particular end results or as a function. (2) Conspicuous consumption as intention, motive, or instinct. Thorsten Veblen s conspicuous consumption stems from the division of wealth that was infinitely more obvious a hundred years ago when the divide between the haves and have nots was easier to establish though the divide is in actuality even wider today. Thorsten Veblen s conspicuous consumption grew from pecuniary emulation. In order to gain and to hold the esteem of people it is not sufficient merely to possess wealth or power. The wealth most be evident because esteem is only awarded on evidence.
