In A Dark Wood Analysis
In late medieval Europe, there was a great deal of innovative technology. Since there was law and
order in society because of rigid rules and traditions, merchants and artisans had the opportunity to
devote time to innovation, rather than having to deal with crime and uncertainty. Powerful government
and religious figures such as kings and popes were well respected by all of the subjects. Additionally,
the Catholic Church had a significant role in influencing political leaders as well as merchants,
artisans, and peasants. Law and order was kept because people followed the rules and valued honor
based on a strong code of ethics and religious dogma. In a Dark Wood by Michael Cadnum accurately
portrays a period of growth in innovative technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In medieval Europe, there was an abundance of advanced technology. Even though the invention of
reins predated the medieval period, their use became very prevalent and allowed good control of
horses for battle and transportation. Candum writes of a character using this innovation: ...he tightened
his hold on the reins (87). Since people in medieval Europe had reins available to them, In a Dark
Wood realistically reflects the technology of the time. Additionally, there were other practical items
similar to the reins, such as weapons used for battle. Examples of these weapons include broadswords,
battering rams, and trebuchets. Medieval society also had horses and other animals to use as a form of
transportation during travel and battle. In a Dark Wood also highlights further technologies used in
both historical and fictional medieval Europe. Weapons, such as the battering ram and the crossbow,
enhanced warfare in general, and made it easier for the side with the most advanced technologies to
win. As stated in a book about a late medieval battle written by Ernst Jünger, there were indeed many
newly developed weapons used in battle during these times. Junger refers to these advances with this
phrase: ...their mounted and artillery guns... (Jünger). Considering that there were frequent
advancements in technology, Cadnum s story of what happened in fictional medieval Europe matches
up with what occurred in

How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in...
How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in improving public health services in the
C19th?
Edwin Chadwick was important in improving public health as his work illustrated the problems, such
as pollution from factories and a lack of clean water, associated with the majority of towns in the
Industrial revolution. However, his impact was not the only factor that had influence on public health;
other individuals, the government and public attitudes were also significant in changing the public
health services throughout the C19th.
Chadwick s first major impact was his 1842 Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring
Population , in which he showed that the poor were living in dirty, overcrowded areas which caused a

Governments at that time were extremely careful to avoid any potential increase in taxes as it would
result in them eventually losing votes and losing power. However, from 1867 onwards, working men
gained the right to vote. This led to governments having to balance public health reforms with any tax
increases, as now they had to appeal to both the wealthy and the not so wealthy. Through the 1870s
and 1880s, more laws were passed to improve the conditions in towns, one of which was the 1875
Public Health Act.
The Public Health Act of 1975 was much more effective than the one made in 1848. Unlike the
previous Health Act, this one actually made it compulsory for towns to make some changes to
conditions, instead of just making suggestions. Sewers and drains were improved, fresh water supplies
were provided and Medical Officers and sanitary inspectors were appointed. The Act also saw that the
standards of housing were improved, the pollution of rivers was stopped and factory working hours
were shortened. All of these reforms were incredibly important as they led to a high standard of living
in towns, and an overall healthier population.
By 1900, people were generally living longer, healthier lives. Life expectancy had increased for both
men and women, and towns were cleaner and safer. Although Chadwick was certainly important in
initiating these changes, he was limited by the failure of the 1848 Health Act, his attitude

Demoralization In The Awakening
To demoralize someone is to dishearten or discourage them and cause them to lose hope. Kate Chopin
uses words like depressed (56), hopeless (56) and despondency (p115) to describe Edna, the heroine,
in The Awakening. Coupling this description with Edna taking her life at the end of the novel and
Chopin s own inferred demoralization, due to the almost universal aversion to The Awakening, the
natural conclusion is that it is a work of great personal demoralization , (Companion 5) as Michael
Levenson states. Levenson suggests most modernist authors and artists paint a bleak picture of their
time period because they are demoralized. Although the portrait Chopin paints of female oppression in
1899 is to some degree demoralizing, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Pontellier s soul is shaken, causing a seismic shift in her, but she is not the only one affected as
all of the partygoers were moved by Mademoiselle Reisz s performance. This alludes to Kate Chopin s
desire to inspire her audience in the same manner as she purposely chooses a piece of music by the
renowned composer Frederic Chopin. She suggests that art is an important aspect of an awakening as
it has the ability to touch the soul. In the next scene Mrs. Pontellier suddenly learns to swim and
Chopin describes, A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had
been given her to control the working of her body and her soul. (p27). Mrs. Pontellier now fully awake
realizes that she has control over body, she has autonomy, and Chopin emphasizes her individuality by
referring to her as Edna. Her awakening is important because in 1899, women did not have autonomy;
their main purpose was domesticity. The church and patriarchy reined over women who were the
property of their husbands and considered inferior to men with no sexual desire. Chopin presents Mr.
Pontellier as a perfect specimen of late nineteenth century patriarchy. Some women thrive in this
culture as Chopin demonstrates through Mrs. Ratignolle. However, for many women, like Edna this
world was suffocating. The natural reaction to this oppression is feminism, but Chopin does not
preach feminism in her novel.

Early African Civilization Dbq
The early civilizations of Africa were different in many of their cultural traits. One common trait they
did have in common was the importance of trade in their society. Although trade was good for the
African civilizations, there was consequences that followed trading. I will be using documents B, F,
and D to support how early African civilizations had consequences from trading. In document B it
states that, The door of the pavilion is guarded by dogs on an excellent breed... who wear collars of
gold and silver, this quote helps support the idea that Ghana had lots of gold and wealth. One of the
consequences of trading was wealth and power. Wealth and power was a positive consequence that
would help a early African civilization prosper. Wealth and power of Ghana included having golden
swords, trappings, and braiding. This is why document B helps support the idea that early African
civilizations had consequences from trading. Document F is a map that shows the West African trade
network. A consequence of trade from document F is exploitation. Some examples are: in the
civilization of Elmina, they were near salt, gold, slaves, and ivory. These are the things that Elmina
traded with others and how they prospered. In Benin, salt was traded with others. Finally, in the

Outsiders And Outcasts In Society
Just how unnatural or strange are humans? You think of the outcasts in society and wonder just why
are they considered outsiders. Are they really outcast or are they simply just misunderstood human
beings. Some of our most brilliant people in the world were outcasts and strange, but overall they were
seen as downright weird. Why do humans have to name these people we do not understand?
Sometimes individually think of outsiders as people with mental disorders ,but many people with
these disorders are geniuses such as Lewis Carroll. Outsiders remain simple misunderstood people
because most of them are geniuses. Outsiders remain misunderstood geniuses. There are many people
who have contributed significantly to the intellectual world. For example Ben Franklin, he said to
have favored air baths (130). Franklyn would sit in a room that was cold and wear nothing which
persists as very strange and peculiar in the normal, natural world. Franklin is considered an outsider,
but he is one of the greatest minds of English thinking for his correlation between lighting and the fact
that it conducts electricity. Franklin invented the lightning rod, which is an instrumental device that
would prevent fires thanks to Franklin s connection between steel and attraction to lightning.
Moreover, Franklin had made some of the utmost important discoveries of the time, even though
Franklin was an outcast. Franklin created his own alphabet dispensing with the letters c,j,q,w,x, and

`` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to
better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman
are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting
of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and
Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper,
more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and
rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1).
In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs
the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that
Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a
personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing,
irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates
the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force.
When the Harlequin is flying the air boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the metronomic Timkin
workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people

Paley s Design Argument Analysis
Analysis Essay 1 HUMN 1029
By: L.A. Graham Singh
Based on my interpretation of William Paley s The Argument from Design, it sounds as though
Darwin s objection to the argument is invalid from the start. Darwin s objection says that there doesn t
necessarily need to be a designer, creation could happen by chance through evolution or mutation.
While the latter part of his argument is completely valid; things can be created through evolution and
mutation, the problem with his argument is that there would still have to be a reason that the former
being evolved or mutated. Some kind of event would have had to of taken place in order to spark the
change in that being. Paley s argument primarily uses a watch as his example, explaining that it was ...

A law presupposes an agent, for it is only the mode according to which an agent proceeds; it implies a
power, for it is the order according to which that power acts . In other words, a law implies an outside
power consistently intervening in the creation of something. If this power does not exist, than the law
does not exist either. If a law of nature intervened to cause the evolution or mutation that Darwin
argues could be the reason of our existence, then he would be contradicting himself because a law of
nature by default, indicates a higher power s hand in creating, and therefor is the reason for the object

be happy that the two CW s were at the home. The officer the led both the CW upstairs to apartment 9.

Nigerian Diaspora And The African Diaspora
I am a part of the Nigerian diaspora, one of the millions of Nigerians living in a foreign nation. I
moved to the United States at the age of 8 and since then, the Nigerian culture I had known and
brought with me has changed and adapted to the dominant culture of the USA. Many Nigerian
families and communities abroad are faced with the same internal struggle of holding onto their
traditional cultural values, while ensuring enough adaptation into the dominant culture. Due to the
diversity of nations Nigerian migrants have settled in, the end result, a hyphenated Nigerian identity,
differs greatly across continents and countries. Through the Frances L. Phillips scholarship, I would
like the opportunity to explore the Nigerian diaspora communities in 6 different Western Europe
countries and how these communities have shifted and adapted due to the dominant culture in the
countries.
I would like to explore the diaspora communities in in Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands, Austria, France
and Belgium. These six countries are the top European destinations for Nigerian migrants, excluding
the United Kingdom. While in these countries, I hope to discover the changes that have occurred to
surface cultural attributes such as food, and attire. How have traditional Nigerian meals and dishes
been recreated and fused with the popular staples/dishes of the particular country I am in? Other
questions and topics I hope to explore are how is traditional Nigerian fashion integrated into the

Legal Submission of Case in Ireland
Essentially, the case in question is one of criminal liability. However, the issues that must be addressed
are that involving the law of evidence in Ireland. There are many legal issues at play throughout this
case that must be addressed in detail. This submission will outline the law, as it stands to date, in
relation to child witnesses, the presumption of innocence, corroboration and witness competence. It is
essential that the law on each of these issues be analysed and interpreted correctly as Dan s criminal
liability hangs in the balance. It is submitted that the trial judge in this case appears to have erred in
his judgement and these mistakes will be outlined below. Throughout this submission, the law will
then be applied in order to correctly advise Dan in relation to his options and liability.
Part 1
Traditionally, children s evidence was treated as suspect and the judge in such a case was obliged to
give a corroboration warning to the jury. The Supreme Court established this requirement in the case
of People v Casey , when Kingsmill Moore J held that in cases completely or partially dependent on
visual identification evidence, the trial judge should give a general warning to the jury. Kingsmill
Moore J stated that the unsworn evidence of children of tender ... shall not be sufficient to convict of
an offence, unless corroborated by other material evidence implicating the accused This point was

Columbine Analysis
The Truth About Columbine Dave Cullen s purpose in writing Columbine is to expose the truth about
the killers. Dave Cullen exposes Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris the Columbine shooters; everything
from their extensive planning, their motives, and the harrowing results of the massacre are revealed
throughout Columbine.
The writing technique used throughout Columbine exemplify the different treatment of the killers.
Eric being a psychopath that felt no remorse, and Dylan being humanized as a person who is lost in
his own sadness. Cullen treats the boys differently by using techniques such as plot order; using a
rearranged common plot order makes Dylan seem like a more relatable person, and more deserving of
forgiveness. Cullen uses a reassembled common plot order by starting the book with a scene that
happened a week before the shooting. But instead of following the normal path, Cullen then uses
background information which includes the feelings of the killers. He then changes to a scene from the
past again to further progress to the climax of the book. Cullen uses this technique to create bonds
between the reader and the characters; in the process of doing this he makes leeway for Dylan s softer
side to be shown. It is important that he does this so that he can fully expose the innermost thoughts of
the killers. Throughout the book there are many accounts of the journals written by each of the boys.
However, Dylan s writings are where people tried to find truth. The

The Causes Of The 1848 Revolution In Krefeld
The 1848 Revolution
The city of Krefeld (Crefeld) is famous for its textile industry, supplying silk and velvet to many
countries. In Krefeld the silk, velvet and dyeing industries are dominant. The Kramer family is living
here in 1848 when revolution explodes throughout many European cities. This crisis starts with a
major crop failure leading to a famine in 1846 and 1847 that has important and cumulative effects
throughout society. The cost of food rises steeply in Krefeld and in other towns throughout Europe. It
reduces the purchasing power available for other products such as clothing, driving many businesses
into bankruptcy. Textile towns like Krefeld are devastated as markets collapse and creditors call in
their loans. Bankruptcies cause severe pressure on the banks, some of which suspend activities early in
1848, placing Krefeld s businesses and thousands of its workers at risk. Adding to the problem is the
growing unemployment in Krefeld. There are bread riots and other forms of violent collective action
in cities across Europe. The economic crisis erodes trust in the government of Prussia. Riots spread
throughout the Prussian cities including Bonn, Berlin and Krefeld. These riots are led by the lower
class workers demanding an end to the high price of food and to their oppressive working conditions.
Joining, and in some cases leading the riots, is the middle class.* The middle class, led by doctors,
lawyers and merchants, are voicing a completely different set of

Comparison Of Frederick Douglass And Martin Luther King Jr
Out of oppression rises resilient individuals whose voices cannot be silenced. Though the exact
circumstances may vary, both Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. were empowered in the
face of persecution. Both came from a place of suffering and restriction, were inspired by the brutality
the observed, and attacks institutions which allowed these atrocities and others to continue. Their
words, powerful and thought provoking, will serve as pieces that will not soon be forgotten. Frederick
Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. both utilized certain writing techniques to emphasize their story
and increase the degree of impact to the reader. In both pieces, Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass and Letter from Birmingham Jail, emotionally charged elements are included to create a
response from the reader. Douglass ultilizes a deeply personal and graphic style. Remembering the
horrific story of his Aunt Hester, Douglass recounts, and after rolling up his sleeves, he (slave master)
commenced to lay on the heavy cow skin, and soon the warm, red blood (amid heartrending shrieks
from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor. In contrast, King calls upon the
emotion of the recipients through his reference to the greater evil committed against society. Relating
what he has seen to the larger picture, King describes, But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch

Cultural Values In The Odyssey
Thousands of peoples of thousands of cultures exist today. Each existing culture possesses customs
valuable to its people. One method of discovering the importance of certain customs to cultures is to
examine their literature. For example, Homer conveys many significant Greek customs throughout the
novel, The Odyssey. In his novel, he explains the importance of hospitality to the Greeks through the
actions of Circe, the goddess, when she takes care of Odysseus s men, and Maron when he provides a
gift of gratitude to Odysseus. A need for order and justification also exemplifies another important
custom of the Greeks.Author Homer utilizes examples of Odysseus s murdering of the suitors who
take over his home and Poseidon s punishment to Odysseus for hurting his son to convey the
importance of the importance of justice to the Greeks . Homer explains this importance through a
cause and effect punishment system from disobeying the gods orders. Piety models another cultural
value of the Greeks through Homer s book, which he explains through details of Odysseus sacrifices,
man s prayers to the gods, and mans humility to the gods power. Through the hospitality of Circe and
Polyphemus, the need for order and justification in obeying the gods, and piety for the gods orders,
Homer reflects important customs to the Greeks in The Odyssey.

his lips and the sockets where his eyes belong. Jones describes, His face is molten skin. His skin hangs
from him and his legs are emaciated, indicating his inherent lifelessness (44).
Moreover, The Pale Man s monstrous characters mirror the monstrous people and events in the film.
The visual aspects describe the bigger picture of society. The Pale Man takes away the childhood and
innocence of children. In a similar sense, the Pale Man depicts the rob on individuality in an entire
nation (Jones 44). He has deprived others of living an individual life. The portraits of children and pile

The Capacity Of Two Theories
Critically evaluate the capacity of two theories to explain violent crimes.
There are many theories throughout the history of criminology that have been formulated, developed,
criticised and commended. These theories were established in an effort to illuminate the real motives
behind the criminal actions of individuals and groups. In addition, they are intended at creating
responsible reactions to effectively deal with past offenders. Furthermore, they also aim to decrease
the rate of offences in the future. The capacity of Positivism and Strain Theory to explain crimes,
particularly those of violent nature, has been of debate over many decades. Biological Positivism and
the General Strain Theory are of key importance in regards to society s endeavour to understand
crime, however, it can be noted as each theory is discussed respectively that there are many
implications and issues that arise from their foundational concepts. The strengths and weaknesses of
these theories capacity to explain violent crime will be analysed and criticised using evidence drawn
from case studies, journal articles, official statistics, and media reports.
Biological theories sought to determine a biological defect inside individuals that caused a
predisposition towards criminal behaviour. For instance, the notion that antisocial and aggressive
behaviour is influenced by genetics is strongly supported through research based on twin studies,
adoption studies, twins reared apart and molecular

The Demon Lover Essay
The Demon Lover is a short story about a woman, Kathleen Drover, returning to her abandoned home
in London to collect old belongings. The moment Kathleen reached her destination at the house, she
began to feel unsettled and anxious. Kathleen s once familiar home now gave off an unfamiliar
queerness (Bowen 1). Kathleen and her family evacuated their quaint house to move to the
countryside for safety from the destruction of war. As Kathleen explores her house more, she
encounters unexpected items and occurrences. Several book critics have varying opinions on what the
moral of the story is. I believe that there can be a great number of interpretations of The Demon
Lover; however, the theme of the story is the effects that war has on civilians. ... Show more content

At the beginning of the story, the readers are told that Kathleen has returned to her old house in
London to collect a few belongings. Almost immediately, the tone of the story is eerie and uneasy. She
has trouble unlocking the house and is overwhelmed by a sense of oddness as she investigates the
remains of her former home. She soon discovers a letter left on the escritoire that was dated for the
same day she had arrived. Kathleen reads the mysterious letter and soon realizes it is a letter from her
supposed dead fiancé, a soldier, from two decades ago (Bowen 3). The letter is vague and she had not
remembered what promise the letter had referred to. I believe the author wants the readers to infer that
the promise made was the promise for Kathleen to marry the soldier, but when the soldier was
presumed dead, Kathleen had no obligations to wait anymore, and she could move on with her life.
Mrs. Drover romanticized soldiers and I believe she was only infatuated with the idea of her old fiancé
and she did not love him for who he was. When his presumed death was announced, she did not feel
an enormous amount of grief, yet, Kathleen was almost relieved. I believe Kathleen realizes that she
did not love her fiancé, and that she has barely even knew him before he left for the war (Bowen

A History of Beauty in Gender and Sexuality Writings
Discuss what you think the sources tell us about beauty s place in the history of gender and sexuality.
Consider as well the historical evidence you have about efforts to enhance beauty through adornment
or other alterations of appearance.
The concept of beauty is one of the more intriguing and important concepts in the study of gender and
sexuality. Beauty has held a prominent role in shaping people s personal lives and by extension, the
lives of society and humanity at large in both positive and negative fashions. Charles Darwin s

Charles Darwin s Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871), Sigmund Freud s Three
Contributions to the Theory of Sex (1905), and Robert Musil s The Confusions of a Young Törless
(1906) served to illustrate concepts of aesthetic beauty through the presence of adornment and
beautification, the concept of libido theory and its dependence on physical beauty, and finally the
concept of negative beauty, or the consequences of artificial collectivism and control. Charles Darwin,
Sigmund Freud, and Robert Musil all work off of each other and use the concept of beauty in different
ways, but when read in succession these works serve as a general timeline of gender and sexuality
theory. The combined sources of Charles Darwin s Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex
(1871), Sigmund Freud s Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex (1905), and Robert Musil s The
Confusions of a Young Törless (1906) solidify beauty in all its sense as holding a strong position in
the overarching history of gender and sexuality and are even more interesting to note due to their
progressive nature and philosophical intimacy. These texts stretch across different subjects, time
periods, and even authorial regions to explain how the concept of beauty has contributed to the history
of gender and sexuality, and that contribution must be

Peter Paul Rubens Massacre Of The Innocents
Religious imagery has been a staple in artistic culture throughout history. It has been used to
communicate ideals and concepts to communities while encouraging the worship of a holy being.
Often, it also represents certain important qualities of the artist responsible for the making. In terms of
Catholicism, biblical scenes have been painted, sculpted, and repeatedly represented artistically in
order to provide a strictly visual representation of what many believe is God s word. The content that
is displayed in these works is often graphic in order to convey the intensity and importance of what is
being shown. It is important that viewers see and understand the brutality of certain sacred events so
as to educate themselves and to prevent themselves from committing or supporting any correlated
evils. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A particularly vivid scene is displayed in Peter Paul Rubens first portrayal of the slaughter of many
innocent civilians of Bethlehem. The Context of Peter Paul Reuben s Massacre of the Innocents serves
as an expression the artist s identity through the historical content that he has chosen to paint, through
the obvious influences of the techniques used in the creation, and the artist s intention when creating
the piece. Each of these components speaks to who Rubens is as an artist and as a person. An artist s
work is an acceptable expression of their identity because each piece is a reflection their beliefs, a
reflection of their influences and who they look up to, and also a reflection of their own

Advantages Of The First Mover Vs. Market Follower
1.0 First Mover Vs. Market Follower
1.1 What is First Mover?
It is a form of competitive advantage that a company gain its fame and money by being the first to
enter a specific market or industry. Being the first often allows a company to acquire superior brand
recognition, as well as customer loyalty. The company also has more time to make perfect its product
or services before other competitors come along.
For examples of first movers include innovative companies such as eBay and Coca Cola. eBay was
the first company to take auctions process online in 1995. Coca Cola in the other place was the first
cola producer whom started off selling cough mixture but then realized consumers prefer drinking it as
soda, hence came up with the idea to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to be a first mover, an organisation must be a pioneer batch of business ideas, and this means
incurring costs in terms of time and investment. For example Sony, technology must be invented,
distribution systems have to be established and knowledge about new markets must be learned from
scratch, sometimes it may be painful. For those who comes later to the market, the costs of acquiring
all this knowledge can be much lower: products can be reverse engineered to discover their secrets
and then improved on or experienced staff can be head hunted from the first mover firm to impart and
share their knowledge and etc.
3.0 Benefits of Market Follower
Reduce risks
By focusing on what works and what does not. Hence will not repeat the costly mistakes of
competitors but yet still grows its customer base.
Avoid extra costs
Imitation can be just as effective and profitable as innovation. Market leaders take on costs of research
and development, distribution, and consumer education. However a market follower piggybacks on
the tactics that work best for the leader and gain its opportunity to appeal in a competitor s consumer
base. Instead of trying to be the best or most popular company, a market follower focuses on leverages
its own successes to grow the business.

William Congreve Comedy
The Restoration Era (1660 1700) in England apparently implies the restoring of the monarchy with
King Charles IIto the throne no sooner the Commonwealth dissolved. This period brought a
conspicuously renewed English lifestyle and literature with the comedy of manner as the dominant
form, pioneered by William Congreve with his play The Way of the World as the finest of the
comedies of manner ever crafted by his contemporaries, although it had certain influence of Moliere s
old comedy Les Preciuses Ridicules. The comedy of manner aimed to ridicule the manner, adultery,
convention and intricacies of the upper class society. Congreve s much applauded literature The Way

It was a customary practice for men and women to have free and unbound love and romance circle in
the society. But it was determined by the financial prosperity of the individuals. Love was associated
with wealth in order to ensure family security and happiness. It is lucidly depicted in the play in the
form of the love between Mirabel and Millamant as the best instance and even with Marwood and
MrFainall, Foible and Waitwell.Money is a certainly disquiet for many of the characters in Congreve s
play. At the same time, the existence of greed is unveiled in the form of Fainall s desire to have all of
Wishfort s fortune or as much as he can rip off. William Congreve shows a more prominent
connection between familial and romantic love and the desire for money as a means of financial
security to married couples. This is indispensably concerned for it suggests that the sentiment of love
alone is not enough to construct a romantic relationship on or to protect family bonds. Money is really
an essential ingredient of love as money provides for a comfortable life, which then allows one to
enjoy one s love. In the play The Way of the World ,Fainall craves to obtainWishfort s fortune to
support his mistress Mrs. Marwood. Furthermore, Mirabell cannot simply elope with Millamant. If
this occurs, they would lose her £6,000 inheritance, a fact which Fainall intends in his scheme. Even
with the bonds of love that connect family members, money plays a central role. Lady Wishfort has
control over the accounts of her daughter Mrs. Fainall and her niece Millamant. But in addition to
using money to coerce her family members, Wishfort is also in charge of maintaining the family s
finances so these women have a nest egg when they come of age or

effectiveness of implementation of collaborative filtering algorithm constructed on the cloud model

some other problems which are faced by many of the intrusions systems. They are: 1) Fidelity

which is stored in log files. During the transmission of data from source (log files) to the place where
IDS is positioned, data may be modified by the intruder. This may result in missing of some of the

systems are designed in such a manner that all of its components work all the time even though when

The Tao Te Ching is a book of proverbs attributed to Lao Tzu. The book gives brief contemplations on
the Tao, the way. It is a very precise and poetic book, which gives humanity ways on how to live or
ways to awaken the inner energy of the human being. A man or a woman can choose to live in
harmony with the Tao, which is the irreducible essence of the universe and source of all life.
Wholeness is the Great Integrity. The Great Integrity is the infinite fulfilling itself. The Tao is a living

Stereotypes and Diversity in the Movie, Crash Essay
Stereotyping is a major issue in the world today, however, mostly in the United States. It is known as
fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based
solely on physical appearance (The New York Company). Crash is a great example because it shows
others stereotyping individuals in many ways. According to Schingel, it is the perfect analogy of how
we as a human race deal with life, people and our own experiences. The movie, released in 2005,
shows each character s point of view, rather it be from an African American, Caucasian, or a Latino. It
follows each character throughout the movie to show how they live their daily lives.

There was another example with the Mexican locksmith that had stereotyping involved. For example,
the Persian store owner was frightened that the Mexican was trying to rip him off, however just like
Bullock s assumption, he was incorrect. The locksmith was actually trying to tell him some important
information, but he did not pay attention. For not listening, his store was broken into and he lost a
large amount of money. They could not get past his race to actually get to know him and to realize that
he was right. It is as if they do not recognize the other cultures going on around them.
According to Schingel, judgments are so easy to make. Each one is judged by their own categories.
Instead of looking past their race, individuals criticise each other and most of the time, they are
completely wrong. For example, Cameron, an actor and a Buddhist, was pulled over for driving while
black . Instead of the white LAPD letting him go, Cameron had to get out of the car and take a
drinking test, even though he had not been drinking. He apologizes to the LAPD while the officer is
feeling all over his wife. Christine, Camerons wife, gets very upset with Cameron because she
claims that the officer took his dignity away. When it comes to race, it seems as if black individuals
have to act like whites to get the same privileges. If he wanted to be successful, he needed to act like a
white man. With that came two major

Calcium is a mineral that is regulated in the blood by the thyroid. According to the Medline Plus
website (2018), Calcium is important for balancing a body s pH, contracting and relaxing muscles,
building strong bones, blood clotting, sending and receiving nerve signals, and keeping a normal
heartbeat (Medline Plus, 2018). When our diets lack in calcium, our body has to work twice as hard
and takes from calcium stores in our bones. As stated in option three, a food journal was kept to keep
track of my calcium intake for two days and compared to a USDA website. These are my findings.

Edward Group (2015, para. 3 10), Calcium Orotate is the most effective form of a calcium supplement
and is great for supporting calcium levels. Other forms of calcium are calcium carbonate, calcium
citrate, oyster shell calcium, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, calcium phosphate, and calcium
citrate malate, (Group, 2015, para 3 10). This means that there are several different kinds of calcium
supplements but they are all not created equal. Some calcium supplements are more bioavailably
effective than others. Other calcium supplements should be avoided. Calcium carbonate is not high in
bioavaility and requires the production of extra stomach acid to be absorbed. It is also one of the
cheapest and most prevalent forms of calcium supplements sold today , (Group, 2015, para. 3).
In conclusion, having an adequate intake of calcium in important for many functions of the body.
Keeping a journal of daily food intake can help a person to be aware of missing nutrients that are
important for proper functioning of the body. If a person is low on their calcium intake then eating or
drinking foods with dairy will allow a person to increase their calcium, because dairy has the best
bioavailability. However, lactose intolerant people may need to take a calcium supplement in order to
get adequate amounts of calcium.

Entertainment In The 1940s
The 1940 s Entertainment The entertainment of the 1940s consisted of Hollywood, radio personalities
and the musicians, all in the benefit of the country in the war. By the 1940s radio had become a mass
medium, meaning that the radio was a device that had a mass audience. Movies Around this time
another popular form of entertainment was movies. The movies were visited by about ninety million
Americans per weekend during the 40s .These movies also showed many war influenced programing.
An example would be the Doolittle Raid , this movie celebrated one of the first American war
victories. Another example of the influenced of the war was that most popular movies and cartoons
spotted war themes. Music Another thing was the music of the 1940s, the 1940s was the decade of the

were a woman with 2 daughters you could only buy each a coat and have 4 coupons left. One of the
issues with this was that even though you got coupons they would only work if you had the money for
those items; that would mean that if you were a poor family you will still get the same amount as a

Uniform policies should begin to be mandatory for junior high students through the end of the high
school tenure. A traditional school uniform may include, White button down shirts and ties for boys,
pleated skirts for girls and blazers adorned with the school logo for all. Another school may simply
require that all shirts have collars (Wilde). This simple and built to last outfit can help students stay
focused on education rather than worrying about their clothing choices. Politician and former
presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, believes introducing school uniforms is a productive way to
implement the focus on learning and limit the attention on what the students are wearing ( Should
Students ). With uniforms, discipline is put into place as fewer debates occur between parents and
children regarding what the child will be wearing to school (Kouzmine). School uniforms are not just
easier for parents, the uniforms also make mornings easier for students. Along with reducing
arguments and stress, school uniforms encourage unity in the halls while providing discipline.
Uniforms in schools could help make the school a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Unfortunately, hazing is a major problem among students in schools. A large sum of bullying would be

A State Of Confusion And Dismay
I awaken in a state of confusion and dismay as to where I am and how I got here. I assign confusion to
being in a pitch black room, or what I assume to be a room, I cannot tell for sure because it s so dark
and empty. As I stumble around and try to find some sort of clue as to where I am, a blinding light
suddenly pierces through the darkness and shines with an unbearable heat against my pale face. I
begin to wonder if I am trapped in here for a reason, maybe I have done something to deserve this.
Maybe it was the time I stole from the local gas station, or maybe it was something much worse,
maybe it was something more evil and of morbid intent. As I lay on the hard ground trying to push
those dark memories deep inside my head, I begin to notice the light moving and change in brightness
almost as if someone was holding it. I get the weird sensation that I am not alone and am being
watched, but this feeling soon passes as I notice the room get hot and the air becomes thick with
humid air like a summer night after a long storm. The air continues to get thicker; I begin to feel
myself choking, and soon realize why I am in this place and just what it wants. My flight back home
landed around nine in the morning, and all around me I saw families reunited with their loved ones; all
around me was love and compassion which I had not felt in quite some time. I walked through the

If a retailer prices its gasoline too high, and without regard to competition, the retailer s customers
may take their business to another station with lower prices. If a retailer loses enough volume, the
retailer may then reduce prices in order to retain its customers. When more people are on the road,
typically in the summer months or during holidays, the price will increase. Crude oil is the greatest
contributing factor when it comes to the price of gasoline. The resources it takes to remove it from the
ground, then transport it, and then refine it are the factors involved in pricing. The Organization of the
Petroleum Exporting Countries has a big part in the price as well in both in the United States and
around the world. Speculation of oil commodities can also affect the gasoline market. The second
major factor that contributes to gasoline prices is refining. Oil refining is done by heating the oil with
steam and only about 40 percent of what remains is gasoline. To produce more refineries must
chemically change some of the other products that were produced. Distribution and marketing makes
up the remaining 5%. The price of transporting crude oil to a refinery then gasoline to a point of
distribution is passed on to the consumer. In addition the price to market the fuel brand is passed on to
the consumer as well. Other factors affect gasoline prices such as extreme weather, war or natural

  • 2. In A Dark Wood Analysis In late medieval Europe, there was a great deal of innovative technology. Since there was law and order in society because of rigid rules and traditions, merchants and artisans had the opportunity to devote time to innovation, rather than having to deal with crime and uncertainty. Powerful government and religious figures such as kings and popes were well respected by all of the subjects. Additionally, the Catholic Church had a significant role in influencing political leaders as well as merchants, artisans, and peasants. Law and order was kept because people followed the rules and valued honor based on a strong code of ethics and religious dogma. In a Dark Wood by Michael Cadnum accurately portrays a period of growth in innovative technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In medieval Europe, there was an abundance of advanced technology. Even though the invention of reins predated the medieval period, their use became very prevalent and allowed good control of horses for battle and transportation. Candum writes of a character using this innovation: ...he tightened his hold on the reins (87). Since people in medieval Europe had reins available to them, In a Dark Wood realistically reflects the technology of the time. Additionally, there were other practical items similar to the reins, such as weapons used for battle. Examples of these weapons include broadswords, battering rams, and trebuchets. Medieval society also had horses and other animals to use as a form of transportation during travel and battle. In a Dark Wood also highlights further technologies used in both historical and fictional medieval Europe. Weapons, such as the battering ram and the crossbow, enhanced warfare in general, and made it easier for the side with the most advanced technologies to win. As stated in a book about a late medieval battle written by Ernst Jünger, there were indeed many newly developed weapons used in battle during these times. Junger refers to these advances with this phrase: ...their mounted and artillery guns... (Jünger). Considering that there were frequent advancements in technology, Cadnum s story of what happened in fictional medieval Europe matches up with what occurred in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in... How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in improving public health services in the C19th? Edwin Chadwick was important in improving public health as his work illustrated the problems, such as pollution from factories and a lack of clean water, associated with the majority of towns in the Industrial revolution. However, his impact was not the only factor that had influence on public health; other individuals, the government and public attitudes were also significant in changing the public health services throughout the C19th. Chadwick s first major impact was his 1842 Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring Population , in which he showed that the poor were living in dirty, overcrowded areas which caused a huge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Governments at that time were extremely careful to avoid any potential increase in taxes as it would result in them eventually losing votes and losing power. However, from 1867 onwards, working men gained the right to vote. This led to governments having to balance public health reforms with any tax increases, as now they had to appeal to both the wealthy and the not so wealthy. Through the 1870s and 1880s, more laws were passed to improve the conditions in towns, one of which was the 1875 Public Health Act. The Public Health Act of 1975 was much more effective than the one made in 1848. Unlike the previous Health Act, this one actually made it compulsory for towns to make some changes to conditions, instead of just making suggestions. Sewers and drains were improved, fresh water supplies were provided and Medical Officers and sanitary inspectors were appointed. The Act also saw that the standards of housing were improved, the pollution of rivers was stopped and factory working hours were shortened. All of these reforms were incredibly important as they led to a high standard of living in towns, and an overall healthier population. By 1900, people were generally living longer, healthier lives. Life expectancy had increased for both men and women, and towns were cleaner and safer. Although Chadwick was certainly important in initiating these changes, he was limited by the failure of the 1848 Health Act, his attitude ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Demoralization In The Awakening To demoralize someone is to dishearten or discourage them and cause them to lose hope. Kate Chopin uses words like depressed (56), hopeless (56) and despondency (p115) to describe Edna, the heroine, in The Awakening. Coupling this description with Edna taking her life at the end of the novel and Chopin s own inferred demoralization, due to the almost universal aversion to The Awakening, the natural conclusion is that it is a work of great personal demoralization , (Companion 5) as Michael Levenson states. Levenson suggests most modernist authors and artists paint a bleak picture of their time period because they are demoralized. Although the portrait Chopin paints of female oppression in 1899 is to some degree demoralizing, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mrs. Pontellier s soul is shaken, causing a seismic shift in her, but she is not the only one affected as all of the partygoers were moved by Mademoiselle Reisz s performance. This alludes to Kate Chopin s desire to inspire her audience in the same manner as she purposely chooses a piece of music by the renowned composer Frederic Chopin. She suggests that art is an important aspect of an awakening as it has the ability to touch the soul. In the next scene Mrs. Pontellier suddenly learns to swim and Chopin describes, A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body and her soul. (p27). Mrs. Pontellier now fully awake realizes that she has control over body, she has autonomy, and Chopin emphasizes her individuality by referring to her as Edna. Her awakening is important because in 1899, women did not have autonomy; their main purpose was domesticity. The church and patriarchy reined over women who were the property of their husbands and considered inferior to men with no sexual desire. Chopin presents Mr. Pontellier as a perfect specimen of late nineteenth century patriarchy. Some women thrive in this culture as Chopin demonstrates through Mrs. Ratignolle. However, for many women, like Edna this world was suffocating. The natural reaction to this oppression is feminism, but Chopin does not preach feminism in her novel. ... • 6. Early African Civilization Dbq The early civilizations of Africa were different in many of their cultural traits. One common trait they did have in common was the importance of trade in their society. Although trade was good for the African civilizations, there was consequences that followed trading. I will be using documents B, F, and D to support how early African civilizations had consequences from trading. In document B it states that, The door of the pavilion is guarded by dogs on an excellent breed... who wear collars of gold and silver, this quote helps support the idea that Ghana had lots of gold and wealth. One of the consequences of trading was wealth and power. Wealth and power was a positive consequence that would help a early African civilization prosper. Wealth and power of Ghana included having golden swords, trappings, and braiding. This is why document B helps support the idea that early African civilizations had consequences from trading. Document F is a map that shows the West African trade network. A consequence of trade from document F is exploitation. Some examples are: in the civilization of Elmina, they were near salt, gold, slaves, and ivory. These are the things that Elmina traded with others and how they prospered. In Benin, salt was traded with others. Finally, in the civilization of Gao, copper, gold, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Outsiders And Outcasts In Society Just how unnatural or strange are humans? You think of the outcasts in society and wonder just why are they considered outsiders. Are they really outcast or are they simply just misunderstood human beings. Some of our most brilliant people in the world were outcasts and strange, but overall they were seen as downright weird. Why do humans have to name these people we do not understand? Sometimes individually think of outsiders as people with mental disorders ,but many people with these disorders are geniuses such as Lewis Carroll. Outsiders remain simple misunderstood people because most of them are geniuses. Outsiders remain misunderstood geniuses. There are many people who have contributed significantly to the intellectual world. For example Ben Franklin, he said to have favored air baths (130). Franklyn would sit in a room that was cold and wear nothing which persists as very strange and peculiar in the normal, natural world. Franklin is considered an outsider, but he is one of the greatest minds of English thinking for his correlation between lighting and the fact that it conducts electricity. Franklin invented the lightning rod, which is an instrumental device that would prevent fires thanks to Franklin s connection between steel and attraction to lightning. Moreover, Franklin had made some of the utmost important discoveries of the time, even though Franklin was an outcast. • 8. `` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper, more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1). In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing, irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force. • 10. Paley s Design Argument Analysis Analysis Essay 1 HUMN 1029 By: L.A. Graham Singh Based on my interpretation of William Paley s The Argument from Design, it sounds as though Darwin s objection to the argument is invalid from the start. Darwin s objection says that there doesn t necessarily need to be a designer, creation could happen by chance through evolution or mutation. While the latter part of his argument is completely valid; things can be created through evolution and mutation, the problem with his argument is that there would still have to be a reason that the former being evolved or mutated. Some kind of event would have had to of taken place in order to spark the change in that being. Paley s argument primarily uses a watch as his example, explaining that it was ... This submission will outline the law, as it stands to date, in relation to child witnesses, the presumption of innocence, corroboration and witness competence. It is essential that the law on each of these issues be analysed and interpreted correctly as Dan s criminal liability hangs in the balance. • 15. Columbine Analysis The Truth About Columbine Dave Cullen s purpose in writing Columbine is to expose the truth about the killers. Dave Cullen exposes Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris the Columbine shooters; everything from their extensive planning, their motives, and the harrowing results of the massacre are revealed throughout Columbine. The writing technique used throughout Columbine exemplify the different treatment of the killers. Eric being a psychopath that felt no remorse, and Dylan being humanized as a person who is lost in his own sadness. Cullen treats the boys differently by using techniques such as plot order; using a rearranged common plot order makes Dylan seem like a more relatable person, and more deserving of forgiveness. Cullen uses a reassembled common plot order by starting the book with a scene that happened a week before the shooting. But instead of following the normal path, Cullen then uses background information which includes the feelings of the killers. He then changes to a scene from the past again to further progress to the climax of the book. Cullen uses this technique to create bonds between the reader and the characters; in the process of doing this he makes leeway for Dylan s softer side to be shown. It is important that he does this so that he can fully expose the innermost thoughts of the killers. Throughout the book there are many accounts of the journals written by each of the boys. However, Dylan s writings are where people tried to find truth. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Krefeld the silk, velvet and dyeing industries are dominant. The Kramer family is living here in 1848 when revolution explodes throughout many European cities. This crisis starts with a major crop failure leading to a famine in 1846 and 1847 that has important and cumulative effects throughout society. The cost of food rises steeply in Krefeld and in other towns throughout Europe. It reduces the purchasing power available for other products such as clothing, driving many businesses into bankruptcy. Textile towns like Krefeld are devastated as markets collapse and creditors call in their loans. Bankruptcies cause severe pressure on the banks, some of which suspend activities early in 1848, placing Krefeld s businesses and thousands of its workers at risk. Adding to the problem is the growing unemployment in Krefeld. There are bread riots and other forms of violent collective action in cities across Europe. The economic crisis erodes trust in the government of Prussia. Riots spread throughout the Prussian cities including Bonn, Berlin and Krefeld. These riots are led by the lower class workers demanding an end to the high price of food and to their oppressive working conditions. It is known as fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance (The New York Company). Crash is a great example because it shows others stereotyping individuals in many ways. According to Schingel, it is the perfect analogy of how we as a human race deal with life, people and our own experiences. The movie, released in 2005, shows each character s point of view, rather it be from an African American, Caucasian, or a Latino. There was another example with the Mexican locksmith that had stereotyping involved. For example, the Persian store owner was frightened that the Mexican was trying to rip him off, however just like Bullock s assumption, he was incorrect. The locksmith was actually trying to tell him some important information, but he did not pay attention. For not listening, his store was broken into and he lost a large amount of money. They could not get past his race to actually get to know him and to realize that he was right. It is as if they do not recognize the other cultures going on around them. According to Schingel, judgments are so easy to make. Each one is judged by their own categories. Instead of looking past their race, individuals criticise each other and most of the time, they are completely wrong. For example, Cameron, an actor and a Buddhist, was pulled over for driving while black . Instead of the white LAPD letting him go, Cameron had to get out of the car and take a drinking test, even though he had not been drinking. He apologizes to the LAPD while the officer is feeling all over his wife. Christine, Camerons wife, gets very upset with Cameron because she claims that the officer took his dignity away. When it comes to race, it seems as if black individuals have to act like whites to get the same privileges. If he wanted to be successful, he needed to act like a white man. I assign confusion to being in a pitch black room, or what I assume to be a room, I cannot tell for sure because it s so dark and empty. As I stumble around and try to find some sort of clue as to where I am, a blinding light suddenly pierces through the darkness and shines with an unbearable heat against my pale face. I begin to wonder if I am trapped in here for a reason, maybe I have done something to deserve this. Maybe it was the time I stole from the local gas station, or maybe it was something much worse, maybe it was something more evil and of morbid intent. As I lay on the hard ground trying to push those dark memories deep inside my head, I begin to notice the light moving and change in brightness almost as if someone was holding it. I get the weird sensation that I am not alone and am being watched, but this feeling soon passes as I notice the room get hot and the air becomes thick with humid air like a summer night after a long storm. If a retailer loses enough volume, the retailer may then reduce prices in order to retain its customers. When more people are on the road, typically in the summer months or during holidays, the price will increase. Crude oil is the greatest contributing factor when it comes to the price of gasoline. The resources it takes to remove it from the ground, then transport it, and then refine it are the factors involved in pricing. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has a big part in the price as well in both in the United States and around the world. Speculation of oil commodities can also affect the gasoline market. The second major factor that contributes to gasoline prices is refining.
