The Environmental Effects Of Plastic Shopping Bags
Originally patented in 1965, the single use plastic shopping bag has since become ubiquitous in
America and around the world. Plastic bags were first introduced in grocery stores in 1977, and by the
early 2000s they constituted 80% of the market for shopping bags (Laskow). These bags caught on
because they were stronger, lighter, waterproof, and many people found them easier to carry than
paper. Most importantly though, they were cheaper, meaning retail stores had strong incentives to
make them available to customers and promote their use (Petru). In other words, plastic bags became
popular, and remain so today, because they are convenient. However, this convenience does not take
into account the environmental effects associated with their production, distribution, and disposal.
Once these aspects of their use are considered, it is clear that the convenience of plastic shopping bags
do not justify the harms to the ecosystem caused by their existence.
Plastic bags are usually made out of high density polyethylene (HDPE), a strong, durable plastic made
from ethylene monomers (Clark). 134 million metric tons of ethylene are produced each year as of
2014, with 28% of that production going towards the manufacture of HDPE (Lazonby, Ethene ).
Ethylene is produced from oil and natural gas, and in the process has significant environmental
consequences. According to a 2013 study by Ghanta, Fahey, and Subramaniam published in the
journal Applied Petrochemical Research, For ethylene produced from naphtha and ethane [the two
main sources of ethylene], the energy expended during the extraction and ocean based transportation
of fossil fuel sources (crude oil and natural gas) contributes significantly to adverse environmental
impacts such as GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions, acidification, and eco toxicity. To make ethylene,
fossil fuels must be extracted, transported, and processed (Lazonby, Ethene ). Then the ethylene must
be processed to make HDPE (Lazonby, Poly(Ethene) ). HDPE, in the form of plastic pellets, is then
transported to the plastic bag manufacturer. The manufacturing process of Novolex, a maker of plastic
packaging products that sells bags under the brand name Hilex Poly ( Company Overview ), is

The Negative Portrayal Of Teenagers In The Media
The negative portrayal of teenagers in the media is too much for their developing brains to handle and
it needs to stop now Nikola Ajdarević
Throughout your teenage years, I m sure that you would have done some questionable things here and
there, but do you really believe that it is really worth all of the negative press coverage that is
associated? But playing loud music in your car isn t something that the media should crucify kids for,
teenagers by nature are explorative and love to try new things, can the media really shame them for
just trying to discover who they are? For years the media has attempted to demonize teenagers as
delinquents with no skills at anything they do.
Article after article after article, negative information on teenagers is immensely open to the world,
once in a blue moon you might find an article that portrays them positively, but can all of this negative
coverage be the cause of emotional damage and lack of self worth? Teenagers by nature are always
trying to discover themselves and find out who they truly are, imagine what these negative articles that
try to predict what they re like can do to them, imagine all of the teenagers that read an article about
how young people smoke cigarettes and are pressured to conform to the ways of their peers in order to
stay out of the sites of bullies and any person who has ill intent. ... Show more content on

School Shootings
Guns in the Classroom
131 people have died in mass school shootings since 1999 to 2015 (Le Miere). This excludes any
shootings that have resulted with 4 or less fatalities because they are not considered mass shootings.
However, these tragic events can be prevented or stopped faster if a trained adult had presented a
firearm. I believe that if a teacher would like to have a firearm in their classroom to help prevent any
fatalities from possible school shootings they should be allowed. Many people oppose the concept of
guns in the classroom, but a compromise can be found between the two sides of the continuum. These
compromisation can be applied to the classroom to help stop school shootings and make sure school
shootings don t occur.
Many people oppose the concept of their being a gun in the classroom. These people who oppose it
are a genuine part of the application process for this policy to be applied and their opinions and
worries need to be heard. However not every need can be met most can and both sides can come to a
compromise. The teacher not being able to handle the firearm or react in a dangerous situation is a big
worry for many people. Most people would not have the nerve, rational thought, or skill to do it on the
spot. Providing stop gap training would not address the whole picture. You would be taking people
who were trained to educate many of whom had most likely never owned or even fired a gun and
transforming them into the appointed defenders of

Likert’S 4 System Approach Was Published In 1961, And Likert
Likert s 4 System Approach was published in 1961, and Likert argues for what he considers is a
generalized theory of organization (Mumby 100). Likert sums it up that all organizations can be
summarized into one of four systems. Each of these systems reflect a certain leadership style reflected
in an organization and they also consist of 7 dimensions. The seven dimensions are as follows;
employee motivation, the characterization of the communication process, the interaction influence
process, decision making process, the type of goal setting, the control processes and its performance
characteristics.
Likerts 4 System Approach consists of the Exploitive authoritative approach, Benevolent authoritative,
Consultative and Participative. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sexual Abuse And Child Violence
Abuse is currently the number one cause of injury to women in the U.S., four million women every
year are abused by men. These women often are disfigured or can develop permanent disabilities.
Each year 2,500 deaths occur every year in abusive domestic situations, 1,500 women are killed
violently by their perpetrators, and around 1,000 kill their abusers to save themselves (Mankiller).
Statistics show that women are more often killed or disfigured by their abusers than are able to save
themselves. Women are often being psychologically trapped in abusive relationships due to the cycle
of violence as well as the different tactics used by abusers, dangers of leaving, and ideas about
marriage formed during childhood. Domestic abuse is a term ... Show more content on

Soon after, in 1850, 19 of the 50 states had passed laws protecting women, saying that they are
allowed to divorce abusive husbands. In 1882, Maryland was the first state to create a law against wife
beating . Throughout the early 1900s more organizations and protests were held to stand against
domestic violence. Eventually, in 1993, marital rape was outlawed in all 50 states. In 2005 the
Violence Against Women Act was signed by President Bush putting it into action. Beginning with the
colonial Americans, who believed that some chastisement was okay, and proceeding until today, when
domestic violence has been outlawed, help for the abused and prevention of abuse has been a long
struggle (Proquest Staff). The Cycle of Violence is one of the main psychological factors that keeps
victims in the relationship, it tricks women into believing that their relationship will change and
become loving. The Cycle of Violence theory was introduced by Lenore Walker in her book, The
Battered Woman, in 1979. This book states that there are three phases that an abusive relationship
cycles through: the tension building phase, the battering phase, and the honeymoon/make up period
(Haley and Stein 81). The tension building phase is the time period where tension increases before the
most physically abusive stage. During this time the abuse tends to be psychological, financial, verbal,
minor physical, etc. In many cases the abused woman will blame herself and make excuses for her

The Current Great Recession
In the midst of the current economic downturn, dubbed the Great Recession , it is natural to look for
one, singular entity or person to blame. Managers of large banks, professional investors and federal
regulators have all been named as potential creators of the recession, with varying degrees of guilt. No
matter who is to blame, the fallout from the mistakes that were made that led to the current crisis is
clear. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate is 9.7%, with 9.3
million Americans out of work (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Compared to a normal economic rate of
two or three percent, it is clear that the decisions of one group of people have had a profound affect on
the lives of millions of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the lead up to the current recession, when the real estate market began to fall, there were so many
investors shorting stocks and securitized mortgage packages that were already falling, that the market
simply fell further. There were no buyers at the bottom, and the professional investors made millions
off of the losses of others. Beyond this, there was no real federal regulation for securitized mortgages,
since there was no real way to gauge the mathematical risk of any given package. This allowed the
investors to take advantage of the system and to short loans on real people s homes. Once these
securities were worthless, many of the homebuyer s defaulted on their mortgages and were left
penniless. No matter from which angle this crisis is looked at, the blame rests squarely with the
managers who began the entire cycle, the ones who pursued the securitization of mortgages. Their
incompetence not only led to the losses of Americans who have never invested in the stock market,
but to losses for their shareholders. These losses necessitated governmental action in the financial
markets. Companies such as Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns lost all of their stock s value and were
forced into bankruptcy. This risk spread throughout the American banks, forcing the American
government to step in and buy all of the securitized, troubled assets from the balance sheets of

Inequality And Violence During The United States
We are all unequal, therefore, build an unequal society, but not together, but superiors are responsible
for building it; those belonging to the elite. In the approach taken by the author of Inequality violence
in the U.S. the capitalist system, makes us see the dark side of society, distinguishing the types of
violence in the author s opinion, they are worrying. Violence is closely linked to economic
inequalities, ethnic or gender caused in most cases by a capitalist and militarist system exacerbated.
It is not a violent act placing toxic waste in minority communities or expose the humblest workers to
harmful conditions for their health and that of your family? In America it is given more priority to
economic violence to peace, over 80 percent of the U.S. population is in the bottom four categories
middle, working, working poor, and underclass. Even the 14 percent in the upper middle class depend
on wages (Barbara, H. 2005 ). Politicians, policy makers and big corporations also advocate and
contribute to the increasing of the inequality, and in their actions they harm many lives, increasing
even more the poverty, and when there s no human development thanks to all the obstacles, there will
be violence because they put impediments to their personal and social grow.
To have a development as a person needs to have a greater human capacity to maximize their social,
economic, cultural and political circles, and protect them for future generations through hard work,

Archaeology Research Paper
Archaeology looks at the whole of human history and prehistory. It is widely accepted that this period
of time spans millions of years, which archaeologists have been able to interpret through the artifacts,
ecofacts, and features which humankind has left behind in their millions of years of evolution and
development. While it may seem like this view is far too broad to succinctly discuss the history of our
species, every year, which archaeologists have catalogued helps the rest of the world to understand not
just our past, but also our present and future. This long view of history is a relevant and useful way of
looking at our history through an archaeological lens because archaeology can tell us where we are
from, where we are going, and our cultural heritage. Through archaeology, we can see the origins of
our species and track where we have been and what we have done. The ability to track our own
species and its predecessors allows us to see, in fairly great detail, the spread and evolution of humans
around the globe. Through archaeology, it has been confirmed that humans originated in Africa, a fact
which has long been debated. Archaeologists can then track human movement ... Show more content

The Impact Of Immigration On The United States Essay
Many People can speculate if the U.S. Mexican border is truly a significant factor for our government
s safety or just there wasting money, time and land. By allowing the government to fund the border
many improvements could be made. Border Safety, can create a safer border environment by facing
the multiple Issues and Challenges, like illegal Immigration, Drug Enforcement, and cross border
Transportation, and Technological improvements by Homeland security influence the agents, trying to
cease these issues. A vast complication that the United States goes through is the huge illegal
immigration.
Each year thousands of illegal immigrants enter the United States across the U.S. Mexican border. The
result is that the congress has mandated increased efforts, as improved technology, to facilitate border
processing of illegal entries and prevent or deter illegal crossing. A major draw for the illegal
immigration is the job opportunities that the United States provides. What is the nature and extent of
increasing immigration on the border? Most Mexicans who want to be a part of the United States must
present documents to the INS inspectors at ports of entry along the border. Of the 915,000 people who
were granted there residency, about 15 percent were Mexicans. According to a Brookings institution

for a short period of time and then later return to their homes. The INS has

because throughout the story he does a lot of things on his own including living alone. On page 3 I
found out that he was ten years old because it said I was ten years old and he d taught me everything I
needed to know about living out in the forest. So this showed me that he knew how to live in his own
out in the forest and that he was ten years old which was pretty young to be living on his own out in
the forest. At first when Moon was scared and lonely without his dad he was aggressive with the other

I like living in the forest. I don t know where else I d live, but I don t wanna be by myself. We were
always by ourselves. We didn t ever see anybody except Mr.Abroscotto. This quote shows how Moon
is developing through the story. That is how the main character is developed through the story and
how the main character interacts with the other characters.
Ideas:
The main idea through the beginning of the story is Moon trying to survive in the forest by himself
and trying to fight off everyone. Then over time Moon realizes that he doesn t want to live in the
forest anymore and fight against anyone anymore. The conflict in the story happens a lot in the
beginning of the story because Moon is trying to stay hidden but then towards the end of the story he
doesn t want to be alone for the rest of his life and fight off everyone that tries to take him away or
help him. On page 3 he said Pap said he even figured I could whip somebody three times my size. He
wasn t worried about me. So that quote shows that he was thinking that he could just beat up anyone
that tried to take him away from the forest or anything else. But later in the story when he found out
that he couldn t just do that and get away with it he stopped doing it. On page 239 Moon was talking
to a policeman and the policeman said, You re not gonna bit me or nothin , are you? Nossir. I m not
aimin to try and whip up on anybody anymore. I don t aim to bust out of anywhere, either.

Anthony Burgess novel, A Clockwork Orange, depicts a somber and disconsolate future that is filled
with violence, rape, and destruction. Burgess challenges the loyalty of the reader towards the narrator
and main character, Alex, throughout the course of the novel. In the beginning, the reader does not
have an emotional connection to Alex; however, as the novel progresses and Alex begins his course of
ruthless, violent acts, the reader builds up a sense of loathing toward Alex. Despite this, by the end of
the novel, the reader almost begins to develop a sense of solicitude for Alex. Throughout Alex s
narration, Burgess manages to transform the reader s loyalty towards what had previously seemed like

Burgess insists that he based nadsat, the invented slang of the teenage hooligans in A Clockwork
Orange, on Russian for aesthetic reasons, but it is believed that this experience influenced his
portrayal of Alex and his gang. The dystopian world of the novel draws attention to the elements of
the American and English societies that Burgess detested. Burgess had a tendency toward anarchy and
felt the socialistic British welfare state was too willing to sacrifice individual liberty in favor of social
stability (A Clockwork Orange). He despised American popular culture due to its fostering of
homogeneity, passivity, and apathy. He regarded American law enforcement as being corrupt and
violent. Each of these targets are pointed out in A Clockwork Orange.
The film recreation of the novel features Alex and his droogs spending their nights getting high before
embarking on various acts of violence. One of these acts of violence includes tyrannizing a writer, Mr.
Alexander, and gang raping his wife, who later dies as a result. Alex is later jailed for bludgeoning the
Cat Lady to death. Alex submits to the Ludovico behavior modification technique in an exchange earn

How Did Captain Hayes Attempt To Colonize America
In September 1583, two ships sailed through the rough mid Atlantic ocean toward the New World.
They left Plymouth, England to grab land for Queen Elizabeth. She wanted more land in the new
world for expansion for the English. Edward Hayes was the captain of the ship named the Golden
Hind and the other captain was Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his ship was named the Squirrel. On
September 9th, the look out on the Hind shouted to his captain, that the Squirrel was going down.
Captain Hayes could do nothing as he watched the Squirrel get swamped and was sent to the bottom
of the ocean. The first attempt to colonize America was a failure. Walter Raleigh was the half brother
of Sir Gilbert, so the news of his loss was devastating, not only because ... Show more content on

The trip would bring some 600 men, five ships and two pinnaces to take control of the new land.
There would be a minister, military members, smiths, carpenters, cooks, shoe makers, coopers, store

some men over first to set up a beach head. Then he would send some 200 more men to strengthen
their positions. Then settlers and more supplies would be next. If the ships were to get separated, they
were to meet in Puerto Rico. A massive storm off the coast of Portugal separated the Tiger (which was
Grenville s ship) from the rest of the fleet. While waiting for the other ships, Grenville established
relations with the Spanish while also plundering their ships. Grenville eventually got tired of waiting

north end of Roanoke Island. The group left the ship on August 17, 1585 and built a small fort,

Huck s Use Of Greed In Huckleberry Finn
Paradise is often described as the perfect getaway into the utmost luxurious world; in fact, the bare
necessity of paradise lies upon civilization. For centuries, most people have seen civilization as a
necessity of life. However, in Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck holds a
starkly contested opinion of civilization, which is society is corrupt and to Huck, unnecessary. He
believes in frequent inappropriate and barbaric actions in order to assert his own opinion regarding
society and allow himself to depart from the evils of society and civilization. In The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn Twain exhibits Huck s characteristics of deceit, boorish behavior, and a sense of

One foggy night, Huck demonstrates his talent of deceiving Jim by slyly stating, I hain t seen no fog,
nor no islands, nor no troubles, nor nothing. I been setting here talking with you all night . . . so of
course you ve been dreaming (Twain 88). After Huck and Jim are separated by the river s current in
the evening s fog, Huck claims to know nothing about the separation and asserts that Jim has been
dreaming. Soon enough, Jim ascertains Huck s trick and induces his apology. Huck lies for the thrill,
even if it results in a bitter Jim. Huck feels that conducting himself in a churlish manner draws himself
further and further from civilization. Huck is virtually relying on his genuine self to complete the
arduous task of escaping humanity. Neil Schmitz, an esteemed writer, notes, What lies coiled in the
child is the aboriginal self, an effortless beauty that mocks the repressed, fiercely civilized adult ( The
Paradox of Liberation in Huckleberry Finn ). Schmitz is expressing his opinion that Huck s lying
brings out a raw, barbarian version of himself. In order to prove that he is truly not one with society,
Huck essentially unmasks himself by lying. Furthermore, Huck s deceit brings him even further from
civilization, almost to the point where his behavior mocks society and those who have fallen to

Reflection About Apathy
Students line the patterned red seats in the high school auditorium. While the speaker on stage bellows
his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some
snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one
impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable
because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not
escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the
classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort
possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material,
they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless.
This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. During my
junior year of high school, apathetic students and teachers led me to rediscover the power I have over
my own education. In my physics class, I was miserable: I did not learn I memorized. Although my
teacher had good intentions and a passion for the subject, he taught us terms and formulas, skirting
around fundamentals such as how these concepts connected to each other. Work equals the applied

French Imperialism In Vietnam
TOppressed and Exploited: French Colonialism Unleashed
The pursuit of French colonialism intended to provide opportunity for Capitalist accumulation for its
investors as well as attain raw material. During the nineteenth century, the French found added pretext
to validate military action and gained control of five territories to form a sole Indochinese Union
(French Indochina). For the French, as for most capitalist nations in the West, colonies served as a
source for cheap raw materials and a consumer market for manufactured goods produced in European
factories (William J. Duiker, 13). As the French began to colonize territories they intended to
implement assimilation processes such as teaching them their language or converting them to

For French this oppression on the Vietnamese peasants offered the golden opportunity to finance the

two percent of the population in South Vietnam owned eighty percent of the land. Colonial
bureaucrats, government, landlords and all those who made up the class of collaborators among
Vietnamese profited under the French rule. Doumer sought out to repair Indochina s financial situation
through a job freeze, expense cuts and absorbing the budget of its five territories into one colonial

the inexpensive kind from China, they made sure that all consumers were hooked. Large number of

‘Everyday Creativity Is Always Dialogical in Bakhtin’s...
Everyday creativity is always dialogical in Bakhtin s sense .
To what extent do you agree or disagree wit this perspective?
Traditional definitions of language have often categorised creative activity in the canonical literary
uses we see in artistic works. However, contemporary definitions no longer confine creativity with
language to the work of the novelist or poet. It is a well argued point that the seeds of such literary
language reside in what may be described, as the mundane, practical uses of everyday talk and
writing. This shift in opinion and approach to language study may be largely attributed to the work of
Mikhail Bakhtin, who developed a social theory of language. Bakhtin s main argument was that there

Bakhtin would argue that it is exactly this responsive and addressive, dialogic nature of interaction
and communication that stimulates creativity in language use, affecting the form and meaning on all
levels. (2006) With this in mind, it may seem surprising that this can also be exemplified in what is
ordinarily considered to be the very private activity of keeping a diary or journal. Many diaries draw
considerably on literary uses of language, such as parallelism, metaphor, rhythm and imagery. Janet
Maybin (2006) explains that this use of language may help to express strong emotions in a way that
more prosaic language could not communicate as effectively. Maybin relates diary writing to identity
work, the literacy process ..providing a kind of backstage for the self, or a launching pad for an

Cochlea Research Paper
The most known part of the auditory system is the cochlea, which is a spiral fluid filled tube inside our
ear. This organ has three different divisions or most commonly called the scalae, which makes it
circulate together around the central core and it creates something similar looking to a snail with a

noise, which would usually be present in such high degree frequency resolution. After the soundwaves

cortex doesn t just receive the inputs from auditory senses but is impacted from more than one sensory
stimuli since the auditory cortex is spread out extensively inside the brain to sensory areas. Because of
so many different complications in the auditory cortex and how it is connected to parts of the brain
that are not involved in hearing the scientist have decided to only define the auditory cortex to be
correlated with hearing if the inputs come from the medial geniculate body in the thalamus of the
brain. The rest of the inputs that are correlated with the auditory cortex but are not received from the
medial geniculate body of the thalamus are mentioned as auditory

Compare And Contrast Nike And Artemis
Never losing and never missing a shot is a day to day life of Nike Artemis. Nike being the goddess of
victory never lost. Artemis on the other hand was a very different goddess she hated being compared
to, and very short tempered. Here are their lives, family, and problems. Nike was a winged goddess
brought forth to Zeus by her mother Styx the goddess of the underworld river to help in the God and
Titan war. Styx also brought Nike s brothers and sisters, Nike s first sister Zelos the goddess of rivalry,
Nike s older brother Kratos the god of strength, and power, Nike s other sister Bia the goddess of
power. These were the three brothers and sisters of Nike (Atsma 1). Artemis was a Greek goddess, The
Romans called her Diana she was the Goddess of the Hunt. Artemis had a brother he was actually

The looming culture war phenomena is not a new one nor a particularly unique one in any history; this

Organic Farming and Ceres Essay
Ceres Gardening Ceres Gardening Company Case Study 1. How has the company grown? What is its

growth of the company has been fueled by the market demand growth in organic products. Ceres
increased their revenues by over 75% in just five years, while growing profits by over 25% (based on
Exhibits 2, 3 4). Ceres s basic strategy started with its founder, Jonathan Wydown, to promote

* Debt Equity shows Ceres financial leverage and its aggressive posture in financing its growth with
debt. The company could potentially generate more earnings than it would have without this outside
financing. This indicates that even with Ceres expansion of distribution channels, extension of
payment terms, and the creation of a direct sales force, Ceres was able to manage to stay below 1 with
a mean average of .74. * Inventory Turnover shows an efficient turnover of inventory. Ceres does not
hold inventory for long periods of time, which can incur additional costs by having assets sit without
revenue generation. It shows Ceres ability to manage inventory in a seasonal cycle and further
indicates their ability to forecast demands on product movement. * Accounts Receivable shows Ceres
effectiveness in extending credit as well as collecting debts. The extended payment terms appear to be
working. The prompt collection of debts enables Ceres to use the monies to reinvest into the business.

It is possible to notice differences in the climate...
It is possible to notice differences in the climate behavior around the word. The elderly people from
my hometown claim that today the sun burns more than in the time of their youth; in fact, scientists
proove that the average of the patterns of precipitation, temperature, seassons, humudity, and wind of
a region over a long period of time, have been abruptly changing through the years and causing
several impacts in the earth. The prevision is that it will keep changing. The climate changing is one of
the major negative effects of the Global Warming, which is the result of the excess of Greenhouse
gases, that happens when the orange light released by the sunrays get in to the atmosphere and hits the

It also can harm the animal and vegetal spicies, extinguishing them in a worst scenario. Socially, as
consequence of the loss of land it would result in crowded population and health implications: air

of edible resources, less job oportunities for the population; therefore, adversely affect the global
economy.
There is no proof of how much countries need to reduce the production of Greenhouse gases, but since
years ago that scientists have been studying attempts to solve te Global Warming and avoid or stop the
climate changing. With the development of the technology, many countries start slowly replacing the
old fashioned cars for electric cars to reduce the pollution, which is an example of use of alternative
sources of energy. Use renewable energy such as wind, sun, hydro and geothermal energy, and reduce
the coal burning from the industries, are plausible solutions too. In the year of 1997, in Kyoto, Japan,
it was signed an agreement from over 191 countries with the exception of Andorra, Canada, United
States, and Sudan, to legally stop the emissions of Greenhouse gases in two commietment period from

Prop 227 Points of Contention Essay
What are the main points of contention surrounding this issue? Be sure to thoroughly discuss
contrasting perspectives and the underlying reasons explaining the different positions people take on
this topic.
The main arguments surrounding Prop 227, is whether or not bilingual programs should be in schools
in California. Some argue that having bilingual programs doesn t help the student to learn English, it
just reinforces their native language. Also it has be said that test scores supposedly did not improve in
the bilingual programs. On the other hand though, people are arguing that the English Immersion
programs do not work because for smaller children they must learn how to read and write in their
native language to be able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with both bilingual education and English as a second language instruction in the United
States lies in our unwillingness to treat English for non speakers as an academic subject (Haas, 2007).
While the bilingual programs in California are thought to be mostly for people who speak Spanish,
there are also Asian students that need to be taught proper English before continuing their education.
As one anonymous teacher points out: I have had 32 different languages spoken in my classroom over
a 25 year period. Eighty four languages are spoken in our district. (Anon 1998 Haas 2007). Which for
most teachers mean that it is both educationally and economically impossible to teach every student in
their own native language.
In contrast, the people against Prop 227, state that the Prop creates too much chaos and does not
support every learner. Adaptations and modifications are not allowed for non native English speakers
(i.e. all public school instruction will be conducted in English) (Linton, 2007). The change from
bilingual education to English Immersion was of great confusion for both students and parents, due to
the sudden change in consistency between districts, school, and teachers. Prop 227 threatened teachers
and administration with legal penalties if they tried to teach or a help a student in a foreign language.
Some that are opposed to Prop 227,

The Influences Of Martial Culture
3. The influences of the martial culture in the Northern Dynasty 3.1 Ensured the fighting capacity, and
also shaped a valiant spirit The militarism in the Northern Dynasties contributed to the generally good
physical quality of the people, and made the military have sufficient source to recruit from. And the
atmosphere reacted to the social culture. That is a big advantange compared to the Southern Dynasties.
The latter put too much importance in the metaphysics. Even the emperor of the Southern Dynasty
couldn t ride a horse to run for his life, which led to the failure of their war. 3.2 Promoted the
communication between different people and the regional integration The enhanced communication
occurred not only between minorities but also between the Han nationality and the minorities.
According to the landscape, Longxi has been a mixture of Hu and Han nationalities, especially in the
Northern Dynasty. With the amalgamation of different nationalities, mutual influence of customs went
deep. The archery of the Hu influenced the Han much. Under that historical context, with wars seemed
to be endless, the relationships between the nationalities tend to oscillate in different situation. For one
thing, the sports culture brought about by the minorities, such as archery, wrestling, weightlifting,
swing, expanded them since the ruling class was the minorities. For another, the Han cultures had their
own infiltration when it comes to the sports culture. In the study of the two

Summary Of The Overcoat By Nikolai Gogol
In a time of large, corrupt, and ineffective bureaucracy, Nikolai Gogol looks provide a humorous
perspective on life in Tsarist Russia. Through both The Nose and The Overcoat, Gogol reveals his true
nature as a comical humorist with the intention of giving readers a laugh but also of mocking human
vanity. From the very beginning of The Overcoat, it becomes clear the story has a comedic nature.
While explaining to the reader the touchiness of departments in Russia, Gogol gives the district police
chief as an example: He plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs,
and that the Czar s sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complain a
romance, in which the district chief of police is made to appear about once in every ten pages, and
sometimes in a downright drunken condition (Gogol 1). The scenario Gogol describes is one of
absurdity. How could someone get so worked up over a book that has no intent of offending them? No
normal person would ever become so hysterical over a piece of literature that indirectly offends them.
Claiming that the whole political system of Russia is being destroyed and that royalty had been
disgraced because of a simple character in a book that resembles oneself is preposterous. To a rational
mind, the police chief s over emotional reaction is clearly insane, as a normal person does not have the
narcissism to take minute details personally. This laughable situation

Education And Poor Education By Leonhardt
What Leonhardt is suggesting is that for our country to help the progress towards eliminating the
income gap, our politicians must first see the inequality within these issues and see how they are
different in wealthy communities vs. poor communities. The more they look at the way money is spent
and see the difference in the way schools and people treated within the school, healthcare system, etc.
The more they can start to take steps toward solving those problems. However, making changes in
education will not be nearly enough to resolve the problem. In other sections of Leonhardt article, he
talks about education saying When a society becomes more educated, many of its less wealthy citizens

Illegibility from handwritten prescriptions is eliminated, decreasing the risk of medication errors while
simultaneously decreasing risks related to liability.
Oral miscommunications regarding prescriptions can be reduced, as e prescribing should decrease the
need for phone calls between prescribers and dispensers.
Causes of medication errors include mistakes by the pharmacist incorrectly interpreting illegible
handwriting or ambiguous nomenclature, and lapses in the prescriber s knowledge of desired dosage
of a drug or undesired interactions between multiple drugs. Electronic prescribing has the potential to
eliminate most of these types of errors. Warning and alert systems are provided at the point of care. E

support systems that can perform checks against the patient s current medications for drug drug

The Reform Of Higher Education
May your college memories last as long as your student debt! This is what a friend recently said to his
co worker, as she recounted that she was very close to completing a key chapter in her college journey.
At the time, they laughed at the joke and absentmindedly continued their daily routines without truly
giving that joke any second thought. Now that they think back to it, they realize the sad reality that
situation truly encompassed. We have become so conditioned, as a society, to student debt, that we
don t truly see any other alternatives as possibilities. We have come to see and understand it as a
necessary part of any education, never questioning its true impact or its legitimacy. We have become
blind and gullible in our ways, never wondering or questioning what has been handed down to us,
what we think is a necessary and worthy sacrifice to accomplish our educational dreams. The question
is, is it really? Truth be told, higher education costs are in direct need of a radical reform. This reform
is necessary to better the economy of our country, decrease the long term psychological and physical
repercussions the millennial population faces, and to improve the quality of our future workforce. We
have always been taught as a nation that a college education is key in the pathway towards success,
the debt connected with it, however, may present a substantial barrier towards victory. In the last few
years, student debt has increased at an unprecedented pace. According

Tasmanian devils have low genetic diversity, and this factor contributes to why DFTD is so immensely
affecting this population. The Tasmanian Devil s low genetic may have been caused by the widespread
killing of the marsupial by bounty hunters, leaving the species with descendants from the same small
population. This resulting low genetic diversity from not having a very diverse selection of mates

compared to several years ago. By means of online classes more adult students pursuing higher

Of course the Internet brings lots of competition among retailers, which affects the supply conditions
within an industry. Companies overseas are able to place their products on the net, which in return
expands their market, and therefore sell to a larger area this causes force of lower prices and creates a
greater incentive for sellers to set apart their products or services.

How Does Edward Wilson Use Satire In The Future Of Life
Satirical Analysis Edward O. Wilson s The Future of Life uses satire to show the two opinions of two
different sides of the idea of environmentalism. On one side, the People First Critic accuses the
environmentalists as being out of control in their efforts to make the world a better place by helping
the environment. However, the Environmentalist criticises the opposing critic as not caring enough
about the environment and that supposedly makes him wrong. These are both two different sides to
the same argument and both are out to prove a point. The People First critic is clearly not an
environmentalist. While he specifically addresses that the environment is important, he also counters
with conservation should be kept in perspective .

Economic Analysis and Strategies to Increase Spending
Economic analysis 2006 and 2011. The five year benchmarks selected for this analysis do not well
represent the fluctuations in the economy in the interim years, which have been substantial. Naturally,
the fiscal crisis of 2008 to 2010 had deep and enduring impact on the national and global economies,
but the bookend years of this analysis effectively obfuscate the volatility resident in those years. Fiscal
year 2008, for instance, the inflation rate reached nearly 5%, the unemployment rate peaked in 2009,
and the interest rate reached 5% in 2007. What this analysis does provide is a look at the stabilization
of the economy without the noise of the intervening fiscal crisis. Through the monetary policy by The
Fed during the fiscal crisis, efforts have been directed at maximizing employment and price stability.
As a result, the interest rate will remain low with no changes anticipated until 2014. Inflation has
stabilized, interest investments are low but gradually increasing, and the unemployment rate is slowly
dropping but is not expected to accelerate.

The Death Cure In The Maze Runner
In the book The Death Cure, which is the forth book the in The Maze Runner series, Thomas and his
friends are fighting against the Wicked. In the previous books Thomas and his friends are put to
dangerous test that could get them killed. Thomas has no memory of his life before the tests. This
book starts off as Thomas being locked in a room for multiple weeks, another one of the Wicked s
tests. After three weeks a man called the Rat man enters the room and tell Thomas he has the Flare
disease. Thomas doesn t know he is immune to the flare disease and isn t harmed by it. He is then able
to meet up with his friends from the Maze. Thomas and his friends break out of wicked and travel to
Denver to try to find a cure for the Flare but the wicked attempt to capture them once again. They join
a group of people called the right arm who fight against the Wicked. I will be visualizing the

Like in the beginning of the book when he was trapped in a room. It was the smell that began to drive
Thomas slightly mad. Not being alone for over three weeks. Not the white walls, celling and floor
(Dashner 1). He wasn t able to bathe or get new clothes the whole time he was in there. I can visualize
the awkwardness between Teresa and Thomas. Thomas can t trust Teresa because she betrayed him
back in the Scorch when she worked with wicked. Although Teresa went behind Thomas back he still
has feelings for her and he can t get her out of his head. Teresa thinks that the wicked are actually
trying to find a safe cure and her help is needed. I can visualize the hideous sights of the Crank Palace.
The Crank Palace was a horrible, filthy place (Dashner 172). All people with the Flare disease are sent
to the Crank Palace where they wait for their death. Despite all odds Thomas best friend Newt was
sent to the Crank Palace. I can visualize the disbelief when Thomas finds a note from Newt telling him
to kill him if he was his true

Life Cycle Costing Essay
1.8 Life Cycle Costing
Purpose
Life Cycle Costing (LCC) is an important economic analysis used in the selection of alternatives that
impact both pending and future costs. It compares initial investment options and identifies the least
cost alternatives for a twenty year period. As applied to building design energy conservation measures,
the process is mandated by law and is defined in the Code of Federal Regulations
(CFR), Title 10, Part 436, Subpart A: Program Rules of the Federal Energy Management Program.
The A/E shall contact local utility companies to determine available demand side management
programs and nocost assistance provided by these companies to designers and owners.
Applications
Basic applications of LCC are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These NIST materials define all required LCC methodologies used in GSA design applications.
It is recommended that the A/E obtain the BLCC so ware and update from NIST.
Procedures and Approach
The most e ective approach to LCC is to appropriately integrate it into the design process.
The building design evolves from general concepts to detailed analysis. LCC needs to follow the same
approach paralleling the focus to the current level of detail study.
It is extremely important for the e ective development of the project that commitments are made and
retained on the building systems, in a general sense, during the Conceptual Phase.
The building systems should be analyzed for appropriateness during the first stages of the Design
Development Phase. A commitment on direction for the systems needs to be made at this time, and
any further LCC studies focused on detail within each system. All LCC e ort should be completed in
the Design Development Phase of the project.
The following practices are typically required when conducting LCC analyses for building design.
They are listed here to address common concerns and frequently asked questions.
When defining alternatives for life cycle costing, an acceptable level of overall building services must
be assured throughout the analysis period. Design alternatives must be compared against a baseline

Emotions In A Tale Of Two Cities
Duff Brenna states, All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is emotion, not reason, that
motivates characters in literature. In other words, feelings are what essentially drives a character and
influences their actions. This statement is evident in the novel, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles
Dickens, through the feelings and actions of Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, whom clearly depict
this idea.
In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, one of the major characters who supports the conception of feelings
influencing one s actions was shown by Sydney Carton. Sydney was generally an unhappy,
unconfident and a fairly depressed individual who felt like he didn t have a purpose in the world. One
of his actions that was a reflection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darnay was a upright, honest and kind hearted individual who got stuck in numerous situations, that
he didn t necessarily take part in. A reflection of his feelings of graciousness was when he was willing
to return to Paris just to save Gabelle. Despite all of the trouble and inconveniences he would have to
encounter, he was still willing to go and help Gabelle. Another action that reflected Darnay s honest
emotions was when he told Dr. Manette who he really was, an Evermonde. No matter how terrible his
family name was and how ashamed he felt, he came through with his true identity. Leading me to my
third example, another depiction of Darnay s upright feelings was when avoided affiliation with
France and the Evremondes barbarous ways and previous conflicts by leaving France to go to England
because he disliked the French aristocracy and the Evermonde name so strongly, and simply detested
affiliation with such a cruel family and lifestyle, because he was not that type of person. Undoubtedly,
Charles Darnay frequently had his actions affected by his different feelings and emotions throughout
the entire novel. As Duff Brenna once said, All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is
emotion, not reason, that motivates characters in literature. In A Tale of Two Cities, two significant
characters, Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay often had particular

Sign Here If You Exist By Jill Sisson Quinn
Austrian British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, The real question of life after death isn t
whether or not it exists, but even if it does what problem this really solves. The idea that death is
inevitable is well known by everyone, yet no one is certain as to what happens afterwards. Even
though the subject of life after death has been argued for centuries by many philosophers and
theologians. In the article Sign Here If You Exist, Jill Sisson Quinn adequately employs figurative
language, rhetoric questionings, and personal anecdotes to demonstrate a controversial argument on
the topic of life after death. In her article, Quinn uses multiple figurative languages to strengthen her
claim that life after death does not exist. This is a very opinionated piece therefore using figurative
language such as metaphors, simile, diction and symbols help enhance the validity of the author s
argument, while effectively giving her opinion to the readers in a subdued manner. Quinn s use of the
Ichneumon wasp as a symbol for the process of human life is a subtle way of writing it. Her article
starts off with a detailed description of the physical features of a Female Giant Ichneumon Wasp,
which then proceeds to a biology based background explanation on the specie. During her
descriptions, Quinn uses carefully chosen words that is meant to let the reader go beyond imagining
the wasp and to think of it as something more. She explains Her overall appearance of fragility the

Maggie A Girl Of The Street Naturalism
Stephen Crane is one of the famous Naturalistic authors, and his writing Maggie A Girl Of The Streets
represents the Naturalism that describes the fall of human by huge environment and outside force.
However, Crane uses Non Naturalistic elements in this book. He uses distinctive irony and
impressionist technic which are Non Naturalistic elements to frankly show the Naturalistic hopeless
environment. Crane uses color imagery which is very unusual impressionist technic in Naturalistic
literature because he thinks that color is an important element that gives prominence to a topic. The
colors in the Maggie A Girl Of The Street is very impressionistic and realistic. These colors are pure

The Unattainable American Dream
When the phrase American Dream is uttered, it is typically associated with having money or striving
to have money. The dream of much of the public is to have money and to be able to purchase anything
they desire whenever they want. For some, this dream is not about money, but it is about having the
opportunity to better his or herself and his or her loved ones. In either case, there are certain
circumstances and obstacles that make this dream increasingly difficult to attain. Some would even be
willing to argue, the American dream is unattainable. American Dream is defined as the concept of
every citizen of the United States having an equal opportunity to achieve success and happiness
through hard work, sacrifices, and risk taking (Fontinelle); ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We cannot let our work and living conditions limit our success, we must take control of the situations
in our lives. As much as we have all heard it, we need to keep a positive attitude and mindset, or at
least try to. This is probably the easiest way to take control of the situations you are in; keeping a
positive attitude has been known to increase your physical and mental health, which can really only
benefit you. In a study performed by the University of California, Riverside, in which productivity,
happiness, and overall physical and mental well being were analyzed in working individuals, it was
concluded that a positive attitude and outlook has a great effect on one s life. Generally positive, or
happy people, were found to be more satisfied with their jobs, to perform tasks better, and less likely
to be unemployed and more likely to be physically healthier and live longer than their less happy peers
(Joy). Positive people being less likely to be unemployed allows these individuals to accumulate more
money, which makes the general public happier nowadays, and this ultimately makes the dream of
having success more easily attainable. Happy individuals being found to be healthier and to therefore
live longer than less happy individuals gives these happy individuals more time to attain the American
Dream as well. Keeping

Mother-Daughter Relationships In Amy Tan s Two Kinds
Two Kinds Compare and Contrast Essay
Mothers and daughters are known to disagree with each other at times and many believe that it is a
natural occurrence. However, it is uncommon for a mother and her daughter to have such a different
view on a certain idea that their conflicting perspectives cause an emotional rift to form in their
mother daughter bond. The story Two Kinds, written by Amy Tan, tells the tale of Jing mei and her
mother, an example of one of those terrible occurrences. Jing mei s mother always wished for her
daughter to be successful by any means necessary, but unfortunately, Jing mei and her mother had two
very different ideas on what it meant to be successful. These different perspectives on success

Essay on Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey
After having a thorough read of the novel Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey, I have come to understand the
powerful effects of using written codes and conventions in novels. Silvey s impressive piece of
literature was carefully constructed through techniques such as characterization, socio cultural context,
themes and intertexuality. By doing this, Silvey was accredited for convincing the readers, appealing
to their emotions and manipulating their beliefs and values to accept or agree with his opinions on the
issue covered in the novel. Characters play a major role in ensuring that the novels can be read and
comprehended. However, the success of a novel is dependent on the quality of characterization and
whether they will attract the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The community also had issues with Vietnamese immigrants due to their different physical features
and the crisis Vietnam was in. For instance, Jeffrey and his family were harassed and Mr. Lu was
beaten by four drunken men. The messages are being conveyed as themes in the novel and Silvey aims
to inform Australians of the consequences for our actions. He explored ideas of racism and
discrimination, inequality, injustice and alcoholism. In the novel, Charlie is distressed to find both of
his friends being insulted and abused for the nationality. For example, Jasper is blames for Laura s
death and for every conflict he is held as scapegoat. In Jeffrey s case, his family is looked down upon
and their reputation as humans is disregarded and degraded. Silvey is trying to highlight the stupidity
of the people and show the importance of giving everyone a fair go. Jasper Jones has strong
intertextual links to an all time favourite but a complex novel to understand, To kill a mocking bird by
Harper Lee. In fact Silvey wrote Jasper Jones as an easier and modern version of To Kill a Mocking
Bird. Many of the characters have parallel personalities and some of the main ideas were the same.
Both deal with racism and discrimination in small country towns, both explore the distant relation
between law and justice, and both, Jasper Jones and TKAMB create a world of moral opposites

  • 2. The Environmental Effects Of Plastic Shopping Bags Originally patented in 1965, the single use plastic shopping bag has since become ubiquitous in America and around the world. Plastic bags were first introduced in grocery stores in 1977, and by the early 2000s they constituted 80% of the market for shopping bags (Laskow). These bags caught on because they were stronger, lighter, waterproof, and many people found them easier to carry than paper. Most importantly though, they were cheaper, meaning retail stores had strong incentives to make them available to customers and promote their use (Petru). In other words, plastic bags became popular, and remain so today, because they are convenient. However, this convenience does not take into account the environmental effects associated with their production, distribution, and disposal. Once these aspects of their use are considered, it is clear that the convenience of plastic shopping bags do not justify the harms to the ecosystem caused by their existence. Plastic bags are usually made out of high density polyethylene (HDPE), a strong, durable plastic made from ethylene monomers (Clark). 134 million metric tons of ethylene are produced each year as of 2014, with 28% of that production going towards the manufacture of HDPE (Lazonby, Ethene ). Ethylene is produced from oil and natural gas, and in the process has significant environmental consequences. According to a 2013 study by Ghanta, Fahey, and Subramaniam published in the journal Applied Petrochemical Research, For ethylene produced from naphtha and ethane [the two main sources of ethylene], the energy expended during the extraction and ocean based transportation of fossil fuel sources (crude oil and natural gas) contributes significantly to adverse environmental impacts such as GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions, acidification, and eco toxicity. To make ethylene, fossil fuels must be extracted, transported, and processed (Lazonby, Ethene ). Then the ethylene must be processed to make HDPE (Lazonby, Poly(Ethene) ). HDPE, in the form of plastic pellets, is then transported to the plastic bag manufacturer. The manufacturing process of Novolex, a maker of plastic packaging products that sells bags under the brand name Hilex Poly ( Company Overview ), is described ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Negative Portrayal Of Teenagers In The Media The negative portrayal of teenagers in the media is too much for their developing brains to handle and it needs to stop now Nikola Ajdarević Throughout your teenage years, I m sure that you would have done some questionable things here and there, but do you really believe that it is really worth all of the negative press coverage that is associated? But playing loud music in your car isn t something that the media should crucify kids for, teenagers by nature are explorative and love to try new things, can the media really shame them for just trying to discover who they are? For years the media has attempted to demonize teenagers as delinquents with no skills at anything they do. Article after article after article, negative information on teenagers is immensely open to the world, once in a blue moon you might find an article that portrays them positively, but can all of this negative coverage be the cause of emotional damage and lack of self worth? Teenagers by nature are always trying to discover themselves and find out who they truly are, imagine what these negative articles that try to predict what they re like can do to them, imagine all of the teenagers that read an article about how young people smoke cigarettes and are pressured to conform to the ways of their peers in order to stay out of the sites of bullies and any person who has ill intent. ... • 4. School Shootings Guns in the Classroom 131 people have died in mass school shootings since 1999 to 2015 (Le Miere). This excludes any shootings that have resulted with 4 or less fatalities because they are not considered mass shootings. However, these tragic events can be prevented or stopped faster if a trained adult had presented a firearm. I believe that if a teacher would like to have a firearm in their classroom to help prevent any fatalities from possible school shootings they should be allowed. Many people oppose the concept of guns in the classroom, but a compromise can be found between the two sides of the continuum. These compromisation can be applied to the classroom to help stop school shootings and make sure school shootings don t occur. Many people oppose the concept of their being a gun in the classroom. These people who oppose it are a genuine part of the application process for this policy to be applied and their opinions and worries need to be heard. However not every need can be met most can and both sides can come to a compromise. The teacher not being able to handle the firearm or react in a dangerous situation is a big worry for many people. Most people would not have the nerve, rational thought, or skill to do it on the spot. Providing stop gap training would not address the whole picture. You would be taking people who were trained to educate many of whom had most likely never owned or even fired a gun and transforming them into the appointed defenders of ... Likert’S 4 System Approach Was Published In 1961, And Likert Likert s 4 System Approach was published in 1961, and Likert argues for what he considers is a generalized theory of organization (Mumby 100). Likert sums it up that all organizations can be summarized into one of four systems. The seven dimensions are as follows; employee motivation, the characterization of the communication process, the interaction influence process, decision making process, the type of goal setting, the control processes and its performance characteristics. • 6. Sexual Abuse And Child Violence Abuse is currently the number one cause of injury to women in the U.S., four million women every year are abused by men. These women often are disfigured or can develop permanent disabilities. Each year 2,500 deaths occur every year in abusive domestic situations, 1,500 women are killed violently by their perpetrators, and around 1,000 kill their abusers to save themselves (Mankiller). Statistics show that women are more often killed or disfigured by their abusers than are able to save themselves. Women are often being psychologically trapped in abusive relationships due to the cycle of violence as well as the different tactics used by abusers, dangers of leaving, and ideas about marriage formed during childhood. Soon after, in 1850, 19 of the 50 states had passed laws protecting women, saying that they are allowed to divorce abusive husbands. In 1882, Maryland was the first state to create a law against wife beating . Throughout the early 1900s more organizations and protests were held to stand against domestic violence. Eventually, in 1993, marital rape was outlawed in all 50 states. In 2005 the Violence Against Women Act was signed by President Bush putting it into action. Beginning with the colonial Americans, who believed that some chastisement was okay, and proceeding until today, when domestic violence has been outlawed, help for the abused and prevention of abuse has been a long struggle (Proquest Staff). The Cycle of Violence is one of the main psychological factors that keeps victims in the relationship, it tricks women into believing that their relationship will change and become loving. The Cycle of Violence theory was introduced by Lenore Walker in her book, The Battered Woman, in 1979. This book states that there are three phases that an abusive relationship cycles through: the tension building phase, the battering phase, and the honeymoon/make up period (Haley and Stein 81). The tension building phase is the time period where tension increases before the most physically abusive stage. During this time the abuse tends to be psychological, financial, verbal, minor physical, etc. In many cases the abused woman will blame herself and make excuses for her abusers ... • 7. The Current Great Recession In the midst of the current economic downturn, dubbed the Great Recession , it is natural to look for one, singular entity or person to blame. Managers of large banks, professional investors and federal regulators have all been named as potential creators of the recession, with varying degrees of guilt. No matter who is to blame, the fallout from the mistakes that were made that led to the current crisis is clear. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate is 9.7%, with 9.3 million Americans out of work (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Compared to a normal economic rate of two or three percent, it is clear that the decisions of one group of people have had a profound affect on the lives of millions of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the lead up to the current recession, when the real estate market began to fall, there were so many investors shorting stocks and securitized mortgage packages that were already falling, that the market simply fell further. There were no buyers at the bottom, and the professional investors made millions off of the losses of others. Beyond this, there was no real federal regulation for securitized mortgages, since there was no real way to gauge the mathematical risk of any given package. This allowed the investors to take advantage of the system and to short loans on real people s homes. Once these securities were worthless, many of the homebuyer s defaulted on their mortgages and were left penniless. No matter from which angle this crisis is looked at, the blame rests squarely with the managers who began the entire cycle, the ones who pursued the securitization of mortgages. Their incompetence not only led to the losses of Americans who have never invested in the stock market, but to losses for their shareholders. These losses necessitated governmental action in the financial markets. Companies such as Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns lost all of their stock s value and were forced into bankruptcy. This risk spread throughout the American banks, forcing the American government to step in and buy all of the securitized, troubled assets from the balance sheets of ... • 8. Inequality And Violence During The United States We are all unequal, therefore, build an unequal society, but not together, but superiors are responsible for building it; those belonging to the elite. In the approach taken by the author of Inequality violence in the U.S. the capitalist system, makes us see the dark side of society, distinguishing the types of violence in the author s opinion, they are worrying. Violence is closely linked to economic inequalities, ethnic or gender caused in most cases by a capitalist and militarist system exacerbated. It is not a violent act placing toxic waste in minority communities or expose the humblest workers to harmful conditions for their health and that of your family? In America it is given more priority to economic violence to peace, over 80 percent of the U.S. population is in the bottom four categories middle, working, working poor, and underclass. Even the 14 percent in the upper middle class depend on wages (Barbara, H. 2005 ). Politicians, policy makers and big corporations also advocate and contribute to the increasing of the inequality, and in their actions they harm many lives, increasing even more the poverty, and when there s no human development thanks to all the obstacles, there will be violence because they put impediments to their personal and social grow. • 9. Archaeology Research Paper Archaeology looks at the whole of human history and prehistory. It is widely accepted that this period of time spans millions of years, which archaeologists have been able to interpret through the artifacts, ecofacts, and features which humankind has left behind in their millions of years of evolution and development. While it may seem like this view is far too broad to succinctly discuss the history of our species, every year, which archaeologists have catalogued helps the rest of the world to understand not just our past, but also our present and future. This long view of history is a relevant and useful way of looking at our history through an archaeological lens because archaeology can tell us where we are from, where we are going, and our cultural heritage. Through archaeology, we can see the origins of our species and track where we have been and what we have done. The ability to track our own species and its predecessors allows us to see, in fairly great detail, the spread and evolution of humans around the globe. Through archaeology, it has been confirmed that humans originated in Africa, a fact which has long been debated. Archaeologists can then track human movement ... The Impact Of Immigration On The United States Essay Many People can speculate if the U.S. Mexican border is truly a significant factor for our government s safety or just there wasting money, time and land. By allowing the government to fund the border many improvements could be made. Border Safety, can create a safer border environment by facing the multiple Issues and Challenges, like illegal Immigration, Drug Enforcement, and cross border Transportation, and Technological improvements by Homeland security influence the agents, trying to cease these issues. A vast complication that the United States goes through is the huge illegal immigration. Each year thousands of illegal immigrants enter the United States across the U.S. Mexican border. The result is that the congress has mandated increased efforts, as improved technology, to facilitate border processing of illegal entries and prevent or deter illegal crossing. A major draw for the illegal immigration is the job opportunities that the United States provides. What is the nature and extent of increasing immigration on the border? Most Mexicans who want to be a part of the United States must present documents to the INS inspectors at ports of entry along the border. Of the 915,000 people who were granted there residency, about 15 percent were Mexicans. So this showed me that he knew how to live in his own out in the forest and that he was ten years old which was pretty young to be living on his own out in the forest. We didn t ever see anybody except Mr.Abroscotto. This quote shows how Moon is developing through the story. That is how the main character is developed through the story and how the main character interacts with the other characters. Ideas: The main idea through the beginning of the story is Moon trying to survive in the forest by himself and trying to fight off everyone. Then over time Moon realizes that he doesn t want to live in the forest anymore and fight against anyone anymore. The conflict in the story happens a lot in the beginning of the story because Moon is trying to stay hidden but then towards the end of the story he doesn t want to be alone for the rest of his life and fight off everyone that tries to take him away or help him. On page 3 he said Pap said he even figured I could whip somebody three times my size. He wasn t worried about me. So that quote shows that he was thinking that he could just beat up anyone that tried to take him away from the forest or anything else. But later in the story when he found out that he couldn t just do that and get away with it he stopped doing it. On page 239 Moon was talking to a policeman and the policeman said, You re not gonna bit me or nothin , are you? Nossir. I m not aimin to try and whip up on anybody anymore. Burgess challenges the loyalty of the reader towards the narrator and main character, Alex, throughout the course of the novel. In the beginning, the reader does not have an emotional connection to Alex; however, as the novel progresses and Alex begins his course of ruthless, violent acts, the reader builds up a sense of loathing toward Alex. Despite this, by the end of the novel, the reader almost begins to develop a sense of solicitude for Alex. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burgess insists that he based nadsat, the invented slang of the teenage hooligans in A Clockwork Orange, on Russian for aesthetic reasons, but it is believed that this experience influenced his portrayal of Alex and his gang. The dystopian world of the novel draws attention to the elements of the American and English societies that Burgess detested. Burgess had a tendency toward anarchy and felt the socialistic British welfare state was too willing to sacrifice individual liberty in favor of social stability (A Clockwork Orange). He despised American popular culture due to its fostering of homogeneity, passivity, and apathy. He regarded American law enforcement as being corrupt and violent. Each of these targets are pointed out in A Clockwork Orange. The film recreation of the novel features Alex and his droogs spending their nights getting high before embarking on various acts of violence. One of these acts of violence includes tyrannizing a writer, Mr. Alexander, and gang raping his wife, who later dies as a result. Alex is later jailed for bludgeoning the Cat Lady to death. They left Plymouth, England to grab land for Queen Elizabeth. She wanted more land in the new world for expansion for the English. Edward Hayes was the captain of the ship named the Golden Hind and the other captain was Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his ship was named the Squirrel. On September 9th, the look out on the Hind shouted to his captain, that the Squirrel was going down. Captain Hayes could do nothing as he watched the Squirrel get swamped and was sent to the bottom of the ocean. The first attempt to colonize America was a failure. Ralegh s first step was to send just a few of his ships and some men over first to set up a beach head. Then he would send some 200 more men to strengthen their positions. Then settlers and more supplies would be next. If the ships were to get separated, they were to meet in Puerto Rico. A massive storm off the coast of Portugal separated the Tiger (which was Grenville s ship) from the rest of the fleet. While waiting for the other ships, Grenville established relations with the Spanish while also plundering their ships. Grenville eventually got tired of waiting for the other ships. Grenville decided to leave Ralph Lane and 107 men to establish a colony at the north end of Roanoke Island. For centuries, most people have seen civilization as a necessity of life. He believes in frequent inappropriate and barbaric actions in order to assert his own opinion regarding society and allow himself to depart from the evils of society and civilization. After Huck and Jim are separated by the river s current in the evening s fog, Huck claims to know nothing about the separation and asserts that Jim has been dreaming. While the speaker on stage bellows his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material, they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless. This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. During my junior year of high school, apathetic students and teachers led me to rediscover the power I have over my own education. In my physics class, I was miserable: I did not learn I memorized. During the nineteenth century, the French found added pretext to validate military action and gained control of five territories to form a sole Indochinese Union (French Indochina). For the French, as for most capitalist nations in the West, colonies served as a source for cheap raw materials and a consumer market for manufactured goods produced in European factories (William J. Traditional definitions of language have often categorised creative activity in the canonical literary uses we see in artistic works. However, contemporary definitions no longer confine creativity with language to the work of the novelist or poet. It is a well argued point that the seeds of such literary language reside in what may be described, as the mundane, practical uses of everyday talk and writing. This shift in opinion and approach to language study may be largely attributed to the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, who developed a social theory of language. As one anonymous teacher points out: I have had 32 different languages spoken in my classroom over a 25 year period. Eighty four languages are spoken in our district. (Anon 1998 Haas 2007). This is what a friend recently said to his co worker, as she recounted that she was very close to completing a key chapter in her college journey. At the time, they laughed at the joke and absentmindedly continued their daily routines without truly giving that joke any second thought. Now that they think back to it, they realize the sad reality that situation truly encompassed. We have become so conditioned, as a society, to student debt, that we don t truly see any other alternatives as possibilities. We have come to see and understand it as a necessary part of any education, never questioning its true impact or its legitimacy. We have become blind and gullible in our ways, never wondering or questioning what has been handed down to us, what we think is a necessary and worthy sacrifice to accomplish our educational dreams. The question is, is it really? Truth be told, higher education costs are in direct need of a radical reform. This reform is necessary to better the economy of our country, decrease the long term psychological and physical repercussions the millennial population faces, and to improve the quality of our future workforce. In other words, feelings are what essentially drives a character and influences their actions. This statement is evident in the novel, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, through the feelings and actions of Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, whom clearly depict this idea. In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, one of the major characters who supports the conception of feelings influencing one s actions was shown by Sydney Carton. A reflection of his feelings of graciousness was when he was willing to return to Paris just to save Gabelle. Another action that reflected Darnay s honest emotions was when he told Dr. Manette who he really was, an Evermonde. No matter how terrible his family name was and how ashamed he felt, he came through with his true identity. Leading me to my third example, another depiction of Darnay s upright feelings was when avoided affiliation with France and the Evremondes barbarous ways and previous conflicts by leaving France to go to England because he disliked the French aristocracy and the Evermonde name so strongly, and simply detested affiliation with such a cruel family and lifestyle, because he was not that type of person. Undoubtedly, Charles Darnay frequently had his actions affected by his different feelings and emotions throughout the entire novel.
