Medieval Universities In The Middle Ages
The idea of a university, an institution composed of students seeking higher education in particular
subjects, facilitated by teachers who are knowledgeable in the subject he or she teaches, is one of
many concepts that has survived throughout the Middle Ages into modern day ( university ). Although
the idea of a university has evolved over time since the Middle Ages, the general concepts of a
university have remained the same, allowing for the successful comparison and contrasting of the
changes in what was considered university, or universitas Latin, commonly used as the language in
which lectures were given, for university in medieval times, and what is now considered a university
in the current era ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main four disciplines that were established to be studied in medieval universities were theology,
law, medicine, and letters what we know today as liberal arts ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). Oxford
University originally specialized in the arts, civil and canon law, and theology in the twelfth century,
incorporating medicine as a track of study in the thirteenth century. Oxford, along with Bologna, Paris,
and Montpelier belonged to the primary band of European universities in medieval times (Cobban 4).
The universities in the Middle Ages existed not solely for the purpose of teaching, but also to facilitate
research and debate, and that its curriculum covered both religious and secular subjects ( Legacies of
the Middle Ages ). In addition to the four main disciplines of study previously mentioned, logical
analysis applied to all subjects being studied. In the Middle Ages, students gained a facility in the
application of rational argument to intellectual propositions, the essence of the scholastic method as it
had evolved from the twelfth century and even earlier (Cobban 150). Students attending medieval
English universities studied the trivium, consisting of classes focusing on the effective usage of logic,
grammar, and rhetoric. Arithmetic and astronomy, a mix of classical, Arabic, and contemporary
sources, also played a major role in specific subjects studied in medieval universities (Cobban 155
57). Although the universities in medieval times taught subjects that are worldly, English scholars
were subject to ecclesiastical courts. An abundance of scholars not only received a degree from the
university, but they also acquired clerical status (Cobban 2). In the days since the formation of the
university in the Middle Ages, the amount of courses available for students to study has increased
drastically, as well as

Francisco Vasquez De Coronado Research Paper
DDear membFrancisco Vasquez de Coronado Hero or villain? Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was he
a hero or a villain? I would say a villain. He set out to find a city of gold and riches. He soon found
out that there wasn t a city of gold. Instead he found something else. He found new villages and land,
also new historical lands. Coronado went out to find the cities of gold and riches. This made him start
an expedition up north to try and find these so called golden cities. Instead of finding the golden cities
he found something else. He found small Indian villages. Instead of leaving them be, he had another
idea. He decided to force his way into the village taking it over and forcing the Indians to leave. But

Negative Thoughts And Shame Addiction
Negative Thoughts and Shame Addiction
Posted on July 20 by johnmerideth
Addiction
When we think about addiction, it seems we mostly talk about substances or activities and rarely about
the deeply set emotions that come with being an addict. Recently I watched the HBO special
Addiction, and was struck by its limited scope in relating dependence or addiction to thoughts. As I
watched the segments, I wondered if they had considered the number of ordinary people struggling
with the less obvious but equally debilitating addiction to shame. Shame drives tapes within the mind
of each person in slightly different ways but the outcome for most of us is the same...unfulfilling
choices.
In the HBO special they did cover how brain imaging research, MRI, illustrates the way in which the
animal brain, the limbic part of our neural anatomy, overrides the decision making prefrontal lobe. It
can be a smell or place or the intensity of a conversation...whatever the cause...once the
addiction/dependence circuit is triggered there is little time for the do you really want to do that
thought to emerge and take hold before the flight or fight response kicks into overdrive. What started
as a survival mechanism, over time, becomes a sure fire method for self abuse and dis ease.
For most of us there is a mental leap to be made between negative thinking induced by shame and
addiction or dependence. We have trouble with the addicted label, at least in part, due to the stigma
attached to the words

Descriptive Essay On The Creperie
A chalkboard caught my eye as a I strolled down the streets of Old Town Flagstaff. Scribbled in an
array of colors was a quote by Nelson Mandela No one is born hating another person because of the
color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to
hate, then they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its
opposite . It was sat in front of a little alcove of an eatery called The Creperie. Seeing the
establishment transported me back to the summer of my freshman year when I went to Paris with my
family and enjoyed artisan crepes in a little cafe near the Seine river. My stomach immediately began
to grumble just thinking about those crepes, and I decided then that I would try out The Creperie.
However, the service, food, and ambiance would need to be superb in order to match the level of the
authentic French cuisine that I ve enjoyed. When I walked through the door, moreso opening in the
brick wall, of The Creperie, I was greeted with a warm smile by a middle aged Hispanic woman. She
asked me about my day, my studies at college, and how I enjoyed living in Flagstaff. Though this may
come across to most as normal niceties, she seemed to be genuinely interested in what I had to say.
Not being familiar with the menu items, I asked her which dessert crepe she preferred. This was met
with her giving me different options for different taste preferences Nutty Nana for those who enjoy

A Comparison of Film and Novel Versions of Frankenstein Essay
A Comparison of Film and Novel Versions of Frankenstein
The nature of horror stories gives the reader/audience a feeling of intense fear, shock or disgust. It
creates an atmosphere of tension for the reader/audience. Horror stories are designed to entertain
people by causing enjoyable feelings of horror.
The purposes of the films/novel: In James Whale version and Mary Shelley s novel the purpose was to
scare the reader/audience. In Mel Brooks Frankenstein the purpose of the film was to entertain to
create humour, to make the audience laugh. Kenneth Branagh s film the purpose was to scare and
shock the audience. The film shocks people because it shows what humans can do to nature.

The people watching hold onto each other. The platform then descends and the first sign of life of the
creature is his moving right hand. Frankenstein s hysterical cry, It s alive! Goes out of control.
The film Young Frankenstein directed by Mel Brooks, 1974 Young Frankenstein is a series of
hilarious humour scenes. To create humour exaggerated dialogue was used. This exaggeration made
the dialogue sound ridiculous. When Frankenstein said throw the first switch then the second and
third, each time getting louder and louder. The creation scene replicates the 1931 original
Frankenstein, similar settings.

Again the film is in black and white. There are two assistants Frankenstein s fiancee and the
hunchback. Like the original version of Frankenstein the monster is on a platform. It starts off with
Frankenstein making a speech out loud talking to the audience. Frankenstein is dressed in hospital
white coat with big goggles strapped around a fright wig of hair and a stethoscope. He tells his
hunchback assistance to throw the switches and fiancee turns a big wheel. Whilst Frankenstein is
talking the monster and he is raised into the stormy night sky to await the lightning strike needed to

Barbie Impact On Teenage Girls
Children are usually influenced by the toys they play with in their childhood. While most toys come
and go as fad fades, one particular doll has withstood the test of time: Barbie. She has shaped the lives
of many teenage girls in the ways they want to look or the lives they want to be; she has been their
pop culture icon. Nevertheless, Barbie s perfect appearance and life are unrealistic. Barbie exemplifies
how a perfect doll adversely affects on teenage girls development such as appearance dissatisfaction,
physical transformations, and eating disorders.
The first negative impact of Barbie on teenage girls is their feelings of appearance dissatisfaction.
Barbie has a perfect image with a skinny body, slim waist, and beautiful face, which seems to be an
ideal model for teenage girls. As a result, teenage girls want to have the same perfect body as Barbie.
Therefore, the attractive doll makes teenager girls feel dissatisfied with themselves and have low
confidence about their body. They are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through Barbie s visual aspect and her perfect life with a luxury house, fancy jewelry, fashionable
outfits, and handsome boyfriend, teenage girls could be persuaded that being beautiful is the most
important matter in their life. They want to apply make up like Barbie. However, achieving the level
of physical perfection that Barbie has requires more than just make up. As a result, teenage girls could
try to have plastic surgery in order to achieve an attractive body like her because Barbie gives them
the expectation of being physically perfect. For example, Pixee Fox, a Swede, underwent more than
one hundred plastic surgeries in attempt to make her look like Barbie. Pixee may be an extreme
example of how Barbie has shaped the lives of teenage girls all around the world, but her experience
demonstrates Barbie is not just a toy; she is the motivation of physical

Han-Chinese Violence
The violence that is occurring in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region amongst the Uyghurs and the
Han Chinese, stems from the conflict and debate between the Uyghurs and the People Republic of
China (PRC) in 1975. According to Gardner Bovington, there is a diverging perspective on the history
of Xinjiang; to the Chinese historical perspective, in 1795, once the Qing general conquered the vast
territory [...it became] an integral piece of Chinese national territory (Bovington 2). While to the
Uyghurs, such concurring of land did not occur, allowing the Uyghurs to believe that they are still a
distinct [...] nation, with its own rightful homeland, history, culture, and language (Bovington 2).
Although both of these perceptions, to the individuals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, such rumors were not verified nor confirmed. Due to the strong authoritarian regime China
centers itself upon, media outlets are potentially inaccurate sources of information. The CCP controls
the outflow of information released by the media, due to such control over media outlets, China is able
to manipulate any situation in order to gain support and sympathy. In reference to the Global Conflict
Tracker, by China labeling the Uyghurs as a radicalized population it leads to the connotation that the
Uyghurs are associated with either the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) or the Turkestan
Islamic Party (TIP) posing a direct terrorist risk to China (Darker blue). By China attempting to gain
international support via identifying terrorist organizations within the PRC it allows China to address
that this problem is not just a problem for China but also other countries who s enemies are terrorist
organizations example, the United States and its fight against ISIS. Although this may seem as a
benefit for China and its aims to integrate Xinjiang, for the Uyghurs it labels them as a potential
terrorist organization; hence, limiting their ability to tell their side of the narrative and gain
international sympathy limiting their ability to gain international support and address how the CCP is
marginalizing the Uyghurs. Thus, this inability

Cause And Effect Of Climate Change
Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe that
global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the world.
The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just the past
two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a wildfire more
aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty people and
leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to these unusually
aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have seen massive
reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with. The toxicity of the
air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise. If the world keeps
dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous consequences for the future
generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic ice melting, reduction in animal
populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal allergies to humans. The causes
include the greenhouse effect and air pollution. In the past decade, Americans have seen global
warming in the headlines constantly. About 71 percent of American scientists say that global warming
is happening now (Saad). According to Linda Saad, Forty five percent of Americans

Examples Of Realism In The Outcasts
The Outcasts of Poker Flat , by Bret Harte and Miniver Cheevy , by Edgar Arlington Robinson are
great examples of realism. Realism is often uses grim depictions of reality and draws portraits from
real life. A common thing that readers see in realism is that outside forces are always at odds with the
main characters. In these writings, the reader will see how realism and naturalism is portrayed in The
Outcasts of Poker Flat and Miniver Cheevy .
Realism is used in The Outcasts of Poker Flat in many ways. Local Color is used to show that the
people in the town were there in search of gold. Harte reveals to the reader the conflict between the
outcasts and society. Poker Flat was having a moral decline and a secret committee had been
appointed, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem is about a boy who has had a pretty rough life. The reader can see this when the narrator
refers to Cheevy as a child of scorn. This meant that the people in the community and Cheevy s own
parents did not accept him. The narrator also says that, He wept that he was ever born (Robinson l. 3).
The theme of the poem is reality vs. dreams. The reader sees this when the narrator says that Miniver
loved the time When swords were bright and steeds were prancing (l. 3). The narrator also says that he
dreamed of Thebes and Camelot, / And Priam s neighbors (ll. 11 12). He also says that, Miniver loved
the Medici and that He would have sinned incessantly / Could he have been one (ll. 17, 19 20). At the
end Miniver was thinking about whether or not he was born too late, and then the narrator says
Miniver coughed, and called it fate, / And kept on drinking (ll.

God s Foolishness Is Better Than Human Wisdom
For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human
strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human
standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in
the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose
what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that
no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became
for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is
written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:25 31 Because the foolishness of
God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.Christ on the cross appeared to
be weakness in the eyes of people; but that weakness of God was stronger than men and everything
that men could produce. [22] The sign seeking Jews could not comprehend the mighty sign of the
prophet Jonah, enacted before their very eyes; and the wisdom seeking Greeks could not discern the
most profound wisdom in all history, not even after it had been preached to them! Despite this,
however, the rolling centuries have vindicated the truth which Paul here proclaimed. We have

Education in Underprivileged Countries Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful
weapon that can be used to change the world. He was right; an education can provide great
opportunities for people. American children have the chance to receive a quality education, but that is
not the case in some countries. In underprivileged countries, children may not receive an education. In
the natural photograph taken in 2009 by American Press photographer Altaf Qadr, Rajeesh Kumar
Sharma has started a free school under a bridge in India to educate underprivileged children living in
surrounding neighborhoods. Most children in America will never have to experience a situation like
this because the government has passed laws to guarantee every child receives a quality education, but
what if the government did not regulate education laws? Imagine the children of the United States
having to miss school because of household duties or cultural influences? These are common
scenarios for children in underdeveloped countries. Inadequate government funding, household duties,
and cultural influences affect whether or not a child receives a valuable education in an
underprivileged country. When governments lack the finances to fund a proper school, children will
not receive a quality education. The government officials in most developing countries simply do not
include funding for primary education in their budget because it is

Essay on The Allegory of the Cave
In Plato s Republic, the great philosopher describes what is needed to achieve a perfect society. He
addresses several subjects still debated in today s society, such as justice, gender roles, and the proper
form of education. He discusses these issues through his main character, Socrates. Socrates, another
well known philosopher for his time, happens upon a group of men, and what begins as a modest
question, leads into a series of debates, metaphors, and allegories. Perhaps the most discussed allegory
in today s popular culture is the Allegory of the Cave. Over the past decade, several movies have
mimicked the fantasy, the most profitable being the Matrix Trilogy. But what makes this story so
fascinating? Through it, Plato attempts to map ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since these are the only beings they are aware of, the sounds made by the people are also assumed to
come from the shadows. Socrates summarizes their belief system stating, such men would hold that
the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things, (Book VII, 515c).
After describing the setting of the cave, Socrates asks his audience to imagine that one of the prisoners
breaks free from his bonds, and sees the fire and the statues themselves. He notes that there would first
come pain as his eyes adjust to the new light, and disbelief, as everything he had previously thought to
be real is suddenly proven artificial. However, Socrates assures his audience that the man would
eventually come to realize that the people and the fire are more real than the shadows had ever been.
He would ultimately grasp how the fire creates the shadows of the statues, creating a mere copy of the
real thing. He would then conclude that the fire and the statues are the most real things in the world.
Though the man would then seem to be educated, Socrates takes the fantasy farther by dragging the
freed prisoner out of the cave and into the actual world. At first, the man s eyes would dart from the
brightness of the sun, and watch only shadows. Eventually, his eyes would allow him to look at
reflections and finally at the actual objects themselves. He then realizes that the trees, flowers, houses,
rocks, and animals he

Out Of Africa Hypothesis Essay
The Out of Africa hypothesis and the Multiregional hypothesis are the two most contentious theories
pertaining to the origins and migration patterns of modern Homo sapiens. The aim of this essay is to

Sandra Harding s Science And Social Inequality
A Review of Sandra Harding s Science and Social Inequality
In Science and Social Inequality, Sandra Harding argues that both the philosophy and practices of
modern Western science ultimately function to advance global social inequalities. Drawing on
feminist, postcolonialist, multicultural, and antiracist critiques of Western science, Harding supports
this argument and exposes the ways in which modern Western science engenders social injustices
particularly within the contexts of militarism, environmental destruction, and Western expansion.
Through the nuanced and multilayered review and analysis of these critiques, Harding proposes ways
to re conceptualize the sciences and formulates a persuasive case for the emergence of feminist,
practice focused philosophies of science.
Science and Social Inequality is divided into two sections; this paper will examine the structural
organization of Harding s text with particular attention to how the initial section supports her proposed
reconceptualization of the sciences on a global scale. My aim is to review themes and key points of
the text in order to evaluate the case Harding presents for the utility and necessity of a postcolonial,
feminist science studies.

science firmly within the social and political world and ultimately serve to question the outcomes of

The Decline Of The Mayan Civilization
The early Mayan civilization had lowly beginnings. They rose to remarkable heights in a seemingly
inhospitable land. As Maya scholar Arthur Demarest said Such a civilization, had no business there.
The Mayans had to battle with torrential rain in the rainy season, and when the weather turned hot, it
scorched the land and their water supplies would plummet. They were always faced with floods or
drought. They were probably forced here due to overcrowding from other tribes. But nonetheless they
began to conquer these threats as they learned advanced farming techniques to make the shallow earth
fertile. They burned and cleared jungle to make room for their agriculture, particularly maize. They
then began the process of crop rotation, long before anyone else. As the Mayan civilization began its
steady uprising they began to redouble their efforts, they started composting, cultivating, they built
irrigation systems and began to terrace the landscape to make farming more efficient and prevent
erosion. They dammed rivers and flooded swamplands and marshes to create rich farmland. They
instituted transport systems to move fertile silt and mud from lowlands to higher enclosed gardens and
farms and created man made lakes and ponds that they used to fish and systems of corrals held wild
game. They maximized their talents and squeezed out enough nourishment to support their population
which had risen to several million people. It took time but the Mayans began to thrive in the

Addiction And Drug Abuse
Many aspects contribute to an individual s ability to resist drug use and most importantly addiction,
significantly fueling the debate whether it is nature or nurture that is the primary consideration in
understanding addiction (Crofton, Zhang, Green, 2015). Addiction is a disease based on the ability of
drugs and their use to alter a person s brain and behavior whereby they compulsively seek drugs
despite any other associated risk (Stanis Andersen, 2014). Drug use is thought to alter the brain s
dopamine surges where receptors for dopamine are reduced (Stanis Andersen, 2014). However,
despite substantial research that supports addiction as a disease, controversy exists in that it is usually
the individual who initially chooses to use drugs. Numerous observers support that is this primary
voluntary choice that makes it difficult for some to see drugs addicts as anything other than criminal.
Otherwise, drug use would probably be legal, and there would be few drug crimes. Focusing on
resilience may be a consideration that could find support over a broader spectrum of beliefs.
Resilience will be discussed.
Genetics and environmental factors play an import role in deterring a person s vulnerability to
addiction (Crofton, Zhang, Green, 2015). Understanding resistance thereby swaying the potential
choice that leads to the chronic disease of addiction would perhaps benefit society the more than new
laws and new prisons. Moreover, understanding environmental enrichment

My Favorite Beauty
Growing up, I never really had a favorite anything. I didn t have a favorite cartoon character that I was

person and a group. It is the heart of Aboriginal culture, and controls all facets of social behaviours.
The Kinship system has been around for tens of thousands of years and is still used today. (Nations,
clans, family groups, 2016). It is a system that determines how people interact with others and how
people become related. Thus, controls who can get married and who supports who. Because there are
over 500 Aboriginal nations across Australia the system is helpful because it simplifies the different
clans and groups that share common kinship and language. (Nations, clans, family groups, 2016)
The Kamilaroi nation s kinship is based a lot around totems, that link between the spiritual world,
creation and the living world ( A Nations Identity Totems , n.d; para 1). Totems are a system that looks
at the community, how people work as a team, and the value of individual skill. (Totems, 2016). In a
way totems provide people with a sense of belonging in relationships between a person and group. In
Kamilaroi, totems allow individuals to understand their connection to the scared land. ( A nations

World Bank And Ethiopia Case Study
We want you to be clear that the government brought us here... to
die... right here, (an elder interviewed by human rights watch )
The World Bank and IMF were created with the aim of promoting development through financial
assistance and to work on poverty reduction. Since its creation in 1941 the World Bank has loaned and
supported many projects around the world and empowers local communities to support them (Levin
Institute, 2017) . According to the World Bank data, the bank has committed to lend or has given 338
billion dollars between 2004 to 2013 (Chavkin, 2017). However, despite its economic support the
bank is blamed for displacement and death of millions. One investigation on the World Bank funded
projects show that more than 3.4 million people were displaced over the past decade. (NPR, 2015) .
One of the World Bank supported project that forced 70,000 indigenous people was the forced
villagization in Gambella, Ethiopia (Human Rights Watch, 2012). The government called the eviction
the Commune Center Development Plan and Livelihood Strategy and asserted that it planed the
program in order to bring the scattered rural population together with the aim of providing them health
centers and other public services closer to the area (Epstein, 2013). However, it was found out that the
government relocated the population in order to give their fertile land to foreign investors (ibid).
Ethiopia, which an ally of the west and enjoys strong support from the World Bank and foreign donors
for its role in Africa and the UN. the World Bank has spent more than 1.5 billion dollar between 2006
to 2013 on a program known as Protection of Basic Services (PBS) to finance the salaries of health
workers, school teachers and other public service employees (Chavkin, 2017). According investigation
made by the International Consortium of investigative journalism and Human Rights Watch, the
Ethiopian government financed the forced relocation by diverting from 2 billion dollar funding of that
the World Bank PBS program
The consequence of the relocation was forcefully taking the people ancestor land, intimidation,
imprisonment and killing of those who opposed to be relocated, lack of public services at

Involvement In The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War caused a spike in American deaths in the 1960 s. Even more Vietnamese citizens
died due to United States troops. Children in South Vietnam wandered the streets as they yell for their
dead parents. Soldiers lose their sanity over seas and kill there own United States soldiers. Even
though the government told citizens the war would be over soon, the war seemed like a never ending
battle full of ruthless killings and long suffering deaths. These just adds on to the many reasons why I
oppose our involvement in our soldiers being in the war. I do believe that it is good of us to try and
contain any type of communism. I think we should have just provided aid and support instead of risk
young American lives in battle. If we had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Casualty reports rose as the war drug on. Though there was more Vietnamese soldiers dying than there
were on the United States side, American soldiers were still dying at a rate of one hundred soldiers per
week. Booby traps cover the jungle floor trappin soldiers as if they were animals, as bombs rained
from the sky like hail. Severely burned Vietnamese citizens run into gunfire away from towns and
villages as they see their homes burning to ground. The Tet Offense just showed how truly ruthless
these North Vietnamese soldiers were. Both sides had agreed to take a cease of fire during the this
Vietnamese holiday. North Vietnam decided it would be a wonderful idea to kill hundreds of
unexpecting soldiers and Southern Vietnam citizens. Even though the United States technically won
this battle, we had still suffered severely. This cause our President to finally realize that it might be a
good idea to pull out all soldiers. Even though we promised to aid South Vietnam with everything we
can, the wounded and scared Vietnamese citizens clung to military aircraft as we left with the last of
our exhausted soldiers. Once again I completely disagree with our soldiers being overseas in this war.
It is outrageous to be in a war for over ten plus year and to consciously have death everywhere. This
was a loss for Vietnam and the United States with no true winner in the end. So many died and so
many more suffered all for the spread

First Aid for Adults Essay
First Aid for Adults
For my listening piece I decided to do a talk on first aid for adults. I identified the main characteristics
of scripted speech and tried to emulate them in my piece. The key characteristics of instructional
speech are that it uses very short, concise sentences to give directions. Long complex sentences can
lead to ambiguity and confusion. Instructional speech uses simple, easy to understand vocabulary as
complicated wording, jargon and terminology make instructions difficult to understand and may
confuse the listener. The points must also be presented in a logical order to make them easy to follow.
The audience should be addressed directly, using a fairly personal, ... Show more content on

In my third and fourth drafts, I put the information into even smaller blocks to emphasise the succinct
style of writing because I felt that it was still too difficult to follow; so I used more bullet points and
used capitals, underlining and italics to emphasise key words and phrases. Also in the graphology of
the piece I have used dashes in order to more effectively show where the reader would give a slight
pause. An example is in a hundred compressions a minute just under two a second .
In the third paragraph in particular, the sentences were too complex so having originally written them
as one complex sentence in the pluperfect tense, I broke them down in to one point per sentence and
put them in the present tense so that it would be easier to understand. I also changed some of the verbs
that were in the present tense into the imperative form because it made the phonology sharper and
clearer for the audience to hear. One example is in the sentence After you have returned to the casualty
and rechecked their breathing and they are not breathing or if the likely cause of unconsciousness is
trauma or drowning and they are not breathing, you now give two rescue breaths . The sentence was
much too long and confusing so I changed it to When you return to the casualty re check their
breathing. If they are not breathing or if the likely cause

Short Essay On Robert Moses
Immediately after the Second World War, Robert Moses power increased exponentially. He then, got a
control over city s housing authority. Huge amount of money was spent by the federal government on
the public housing and low income housing. This money was spent in New York at the command of
Robert Moses. Up to that point Moses had been building mostly parks and bridges, now, he was going
to build inside the city. No one could have predicted the magnitude of explosion that would overtake
New York. Moses demanded to be the construction co ordinater. The construction co ordinater has to

After the war, every one realized the need of good arterial routes through the cities. Soon after that,
Moses planned to ram six expressways right across the heart of New York. Amongst all the federal
projects under his control, none of them had more devastating consequences for the city and its
people. The Cross Bronx expressway of 225 foot wide concrete and 7 miles long destructed the city in
such a way that New Yorkers would never forget. This expressway crossed around 12 to 15 different
neighbourhoods and was built in a straight line without thinking that who are the people living in these

was culturally and materially self sufficient world. People were forced to evacuate their homes within
ninety days. One after another, Robert Moses rammed one expressway after another upending the
lives of more than a quarter of a million people. In 1962 Jane Jacobs, a resident of the town became

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
In his novel, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo identifies the principle social evils of French society
through the actions and qualities of his characters. By depicting each of his characters struggles
through destitute and oppressed measures, Hugo is able to identify the social errors of 19th century
France. The fact that characters such as Valjean, Javert, Fantine, and Cosette, attempt to rise above
poverty and redeem themselves indicate that such inequalities did, and still do, exist to this day.
Through the use of feminist ideals and the criminal injustice system, Hugo attacks the principle social
evils that each of his characters face in Les Miserables.
In the early 19th century, most women were subject to gender discrimination and viewed as weaker
components in France. One of the first characters attacked by such injustice is the former factory
worker and prostitute, Fantine. Having been discovered as a mother of an illegitimate child, Fantine is
thrown out of the work place and turns towards prostitution instead. Deprived of hope and redemption,
Fantine endures through much suffering and harassment from her male superiors in order to provide
for her child. While walking down the street one evening, Fantine passes by a man, who, taking
advantage of the moment when she turns... seizes a handful of snow from the sidewalk, and throws it
hastily down her back between her naked shoulders (69). Enraged, Fantine lashes out at the man, only

Qualitative Research Is Good At Simplifying And Managing...
Qualitative research is good at simplifying and managing data without destroying complexity and
context. Qualitative methods are highly appropriate for questions where preemptive reduction of the
data will prevent discovery. If the purpose is to learn from the participants in a setting or a process the
way they experience it, the meanings they put on it, and how they interpret what they experience, the
researcher needs methods that will allow for discovery and do justice to their perceptions and the
complexity of their interpretations. Qualitative methods have in common the goal of generating new
ways of seeing existing data. If the purpose is to construct a theory or a theoretical framework that
reflects reality rather than the researchers own perspective or prior research results, one may need
methods that assist the discovery of theory in data. If the purpose is to understand phenomena deeply
and in detail, the researcher needs methods for discovery of central themes and analysis of core
concerns. Each of these suggestions has a flip side. If one knows what is being hypothesized and what
they are likely to find, if one do not need to know the complexity of others understandings, if one is
testing prior theory rather than constructing new frameworks, or if one is simply describing a situation
rather than deeply analyzing it, it is possible that one should not be working qualitatively. Perhaps the
research question that one is tackling with in depth interviews would be

Reaction Paper On Multilingualism
Introduction
In the present world, there are around 6000 languages grouped under various language families
spoken in 200 states (Grimes, 1992). The people across the world speak different languages such as
Arabic, Bengali, English, French, Hindi, Malay, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish which

side by side, resulted in multilingualism because they have been spoken as second, third, fourth or

unable to understand them, will that be considered a multilingual? Multilingualism serves the
necessity of effective communication and for that it is not necessary to have competence in all the
languages. Many scholars use the notion of bilingualism and multilingualism interchangeably to refer
to the knowledge of more than one language. Apart from the natural multilingualism (acquired
generally in the early stages of childhood) and artificial multilingualism (when a person learns it in
classroom settings; may be in childhood or adulthood), the types of multilingualism have been
classified by Sridhar (1996) as Individual Multilingualism and Societal Multilingualism.
1. Individual Multilingualism: The ability of an individual to have competence in two or more
languages is known as Individual multilingualism. For example, a child having a Punjabi father, a
Bengali mother and is raised by a Bhojpuri maid; living in a metropolitan city like Mumbai will grow

How Did Nicholas Sarkozy Ban The Construction Of More...
Amidst the furore instigated by the Swiss minaret referendum in 2009 (Migration Policy Institute,
2009), former French president Nicolas Sarkozy voiced his sympathy and his understanding for the
collective decision to ban the construction of more minarets within Switzerland through an article
titled Respecter ceux qui arrivent, respecter ceux qui accueillent (Sarkozy, 2009b). Sarkozy s article
first appeared in the December 8th publication of Le Monde a French daily newspaper in 2009, and
was subsequently edited and translated by The Guardian, an English news agency based in the United
Kingdom (Sarkozy, 2009a). It is of importance to note that this discourse is based on the translated
(English) version of Sarkozy s article. Given the nature of translations, expressions and connotations
from the original commentary may be altered and hence, discrepancies may arise. ... Show more

Although his argument may seem compelling upon first glance, due to Sarkozy s vast omission of
crucial information, it is evident that his claims are incomplete, erroneous, and moreover, a perversion
of what he purports. This paper attempts to present a thorough exposition of Sarkozy s argument,
confront his baseless conclusions by considering and highlighting four factors: the background and
cause of the Swiss minaret vote, the opposition and their perspective, the image and lives of Muslims
in Switzerland and France, and the development of populism; additionally, to provide a retort to

The Power Of Power In Machiavelli s The Prince
The Medici was a very powerful family who started off as just a small family bank, but by using
smart, cunning and risk taking tactics, they gained and kept control over Florence for the majority of
the period of 1434 1737. Machiavelli was a political leader and author, living in Florence at the same
time as The Medici, but wasn t very fond of them. For that, The Medici had him arrested and tortured,
but despite that he went on and wrote a book called The Prince. The Prince is a short how to book with
the intentions of it being something useful for anyone who understands it . The book describes
Machiavelli s opinion on what he believes it takes to be an extraordinary prince, and how to gain and
keep full control of the people; by using his personal experiences, observations and past historical
events to prove his points. Although Machiavelli didn t like the Medici, the advice given in The Prince
illustrates the actions of the Medici family, proving them to be powerful and extraordinary leaders. In
The Prince, Machiavelli states that having the right skills and tactics will help you gain power. He
writes that there are two ways to gain power; one becomes prince through some wicked and nefarious
means , or when a private citizen becomes prince of his native city through the favor of his fellow
citizens . Agathocles the Sicilian gained power and became prince through wicked and nefarious
means , he rose through the ranks and one day held a meeting with all the

Rhyme Scheme Of Mending Wall
Mending Wall by Robert Frost has forty six lines of human nature and its tendency to build walls
between. Mending Wall could be described as a first person narrative. The poem is written in an
iambic pentameter form and, mostly, there are ten syllables per line, but also there could be lines with
eleven syllables. There are ten syllables in the remaining lines in this poem. Even though it has no
rhyme, Robert Frost uses a subtle internal rhyme and the assonance in some ending terms like wall ,
hill , balls , well and others. It is a narrative poem which employs dialogue to characterize the speaker
s thoughts, as well as the attitudes of his neighbor.
The scheme is five pairs of syllables per line, unstressed followed by stressed, verses ... Show more

Ironically though it seems that wall between the neighbors serves no purpose, the speaker states, It
comes to little more: There where it is we do not need the wall... (Lines 22 23). The awareness of not
needing this wall is clearly seen by the speaker as they emphasize the fact of the neighbor has nothing
but pine trees and the speaker has apple trees will never get across / And eat the cones under his pines
( Lines 25 26). Even after presenting an argument about the uselessness of the wall the neighbor
stubbornly refuses to agree with the speaker statements. The irony of mending the wall, or this act of
neighborliness is that the wall literally keeps them apart but also brings them together with the joint
action of fixing the damages to the wall. The fact that speaker detests the wall yet still helps to
maintain it is irony in all in itself.

Jing-Mei In Two Kinds
Jing Mei is a young Chinese American girl with a mother who immigrates here after losing her first
husband and two daughters in China. She believes that America is the place of high hopes, that there is

pushes her daughter so hard to become a pianist, her daughter decides to push back to stop her mother
from making her something she isn t. The character Jing Mei from Two Kinds by Amy Tan

However, once another Chinese Shirley Temple appears on their TV playing the piano with a Peter
Pan haircut just like Jing Mei s, her mother criticizes the girl on TV and Jing Mei comes to her
defense by saying she s trying hard. Her mother counters with comparing the girl to her daughter, Not
the best. Because you not trying (Tan 474). All her mother wants is for her to try and do her best, but
Jing Mei just wants her mother to like her the way she is. Three days after seeing the girl on TV her
mother signs her up for piano lessons with Mr. Chong, who happens to be deaf and unable to notice as
Jing Mei plays nonsense and makes many mistakes. She quickly gathers that she can be lazy while at
these practices and not correct herself if she makes a mistake; she realizes that she never really gave
herself a chance. Her negative determination keeps her from trying, just like her mother had said. And
when her mother brags about her natural talent to her Aunt Lindo, her determination gets stronger. She
continues to cheat at her piano lessons when she is supposed to memorize her piece for the talent show
and she put more effort into practicing her curtsy than the song. This shows when it s time her to
perform the piece Pleading Child in front of her family and Old Chong. Mistake after mistake she
continues playing and at the end, she does the curtsy she worked so hard on. Then when she sees her
mother s face she feels the shame of her parents and when they return home she awaits her mother s
wrath. But, when her mother proceeds into the house without saying a word, Jing Mei feels
disappointed too, for not having a reason to yell, cry, and blame her

Boccaccio. This quote must be representing his strong emotions for his young love. Giovanni
Boccaccio is an Italian poet and scholar, known from early tales and works written with his friend,
Petrarch. Giovanni Boccaccio s writings were influenced greatly by the black death, his personal life
in Naples and the historical events that occurred in Florence. Shortly after Giovanni Boccaccio began

Giovanni fell in love with a woman named Fiammetta, which encouraged him to write another famous
writing named, Filocolo. This was a romance inspired by her that retells the story of two noble lovers.
Another work that is said to be his way of preceding his love for her is the Caccia di Diana. This is
about beasts being hunted by the fairest ladies, they invoke the goddess Venus who transforms the
beasts into young, faithful men. At the end, the narrator is added in and is offered to the fairest lady.
This is Boccaccio s way of displaying his feelings to Fiammetta. Then, his father soon got appointed
to the head of the Neapolitan branch. The Neapolitan branch was a high rank in his bank. Boccaccio
was sooner introduced to the society of the court at Naples. He met a variety of people, such as
scientists, theologians and the men of letters. He studied many different cultures and topics. He
learned the environment of Naples that inspired him to write. He studied mythology, astronomy, the
Greek language and it s culture. His visitor, the Calabrian monk Leonzio, was the one who induced
him to translate homeric epics and taught him the culture and language of greek. This knowledge then

Napoleon And Satire
Charlie Chaplin and Horace do a phenomenal job entertaining and explaining the idea and use of
satire in both of their works. The satire in Horace s Book I Sat I and satire in Modern Times are
different as satire in Horace uses satire in the ideas of people such as merchants and soldiers, while
satire in Modern Times is about the things happening around the little tramp and the things the little
tramp is doing. They are also similar as they both use many types of satirical devices such as irony
and both use humor to entertain the idea of satire.
In book I satire I, Horace begins essentially complaining about others complaining about themselves.

The Influence of Music on Self and Society
Throughout history the unspoken but highly evocative language of music has exerted powerful
influences on individuals and societies alike. Felix Mendelssohn once remarked that music is more
specific about what it expresses than words written about those expressions could ever be. That music
has the power to express, convey and illicit powerful emotions is without question, however the issue
of music s moral and ethical power, and how that power affects individuals and societies, is one that
receives too little attention in our post modern world. Ancient cultures held strong beliefs in the moral
and ethical power of music and as such it was imperative for artists within those cultures to exercise a

the moral and possibly corrupting aspects of the music of his countrymen. He was equally concerned
with the effects of good (moral) music on a person s character: The noble minded man s music is mild
and delicate, keeps a uniform mood, enlivens and moves. Such a man does not harbor pain or mourn
in his heart; violent and daring movements are foreign to him.
As mentioned earlier, a significant aspect of the ancient Chinese concept of music was the effect of
music on one s psyche and the issue of freedom and responsibility in all musical pursuits. When
compared to the rationales and motivation of artists of our modern age the Chinese ideal of music
making seems highly enlightened as evident in the consideration given to the effect of music upon the
character of the listener. If individuals were affected by music it stood to reason that the larger society
could be influenced positively or negatively as well.
The ancient Chinese book The Memorial of Music states: Under the effect of music, the five social
duties are without admixture, the eyes and the ears are clear, the blood and the vital energies are
balanced, habits are reformed, customs are improved, the empire is at complete peace. As we can see,
the Chinese view that social order was juxtaposed to music plays heavily into its philosophical system
and ideals. The connection of the tonal arts to the ordering principles of physical laws and
metaphysical

Senior Project
For Claudia Cifolelli s Senior Project, she provided service for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in
Kenya, Africa. This organization provides a safe haven for injured and orphaned elephants that have
been victims of the illegal ivory poaching throughout Kenya. In order to help raise money to fund this
organization, Claudia organized a silent auction containing art pieces related to wildlife made by
students and alumni from Natomas Charter School and other local artists. The money she made went
to the Medical needs of the Elephants in Kenya.
When Claudia asked me to participate in her senior project, i immediately said i would help her out. I

I would draw out the silhouettes of 4 Different animals and use different colors for each of the
canvases. I then ran across another problem, what animals could I draw and what colors should I use
to paint. I started to use the original sketches I had, a wolf and a deer, and started painting while also
mixing together colors that i thought would catch the viewer s eye ; and because i was fairly low on
paint, i had to use some of the paint from the painting of the wolf silhouette on the painting of the deer
silhouette. After I did the two paintings, I knew it wasn t finished. The two canvases I painted looked
too lonely. I needed to paint at least two more but i was stuck, staring at an empty canvas that was
waiting to be filled with colors. I started to sketch out an elephant, the main focus of this whole
project, and started to paint with more vivid and brilliant colors that caught my eye while i was mixing
paints. As I was painting the elephant I realized that elephants aren t the only wild animal who is being
poached for their horns. In the middle of

Japanese Female Divers Essay
On the other hand, the history of Japanese female divers stretches back far longer than that of the
Koreans. The practice originated at least two thousand years ago, and may have a connection to the
migration of Japanese. As fishermen were moving along the southwest islands of Japan and towards
the main island, women were reported to have collected shellfish and seaweed. Such catches would
provide much needed salt in the diet and some items such as abalone or turbo play a part in religious
ceremonies, and also could be traded for other products. Jewelry could also be made out of the pearls
and abalone shells they collected. The Japanese have a wide variety of diving practices and even wear
different types of clothing depending on the region; such diversity is evidence of free diving as a long
standing tradition with older origins. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Underwater googles also vary by region, but all ama do carry a kaigane. The kaigane is a metal scoop
or pallet...used to remove the abalone or other shells from the rocks, and serves as a counterweight
during descent (Rahn 29). Like the Koreans, free diving did not start out as a female dominated
profession. It is significant to note that the male characters for ama, (diver in Japanese) have the
connotation of sea warrior or more appropriately, samurai of the sea. But the female characters for
ama simply mean sea woman, and the term itself is now assumed to refer to females. The difference in
meaning is most likely due to the fact that men would use their hands or spears to grab fish, while the
women collected shellfish and

  • 2. Medieval Universities In The Middle Ages The idea of a university, an institution composed of students seeking higher education in particular subjects, facilitated by teachers who are knowledgeable in the subject he or she teaches, is one of many concepts that has survived throughout the Middle Ages into modern day ( university ). Although the idea of a university has evolved over time since the Middle Ages, the general concepts of a university have remained the same, allowing for the successful comparison and contrasting of the changes in what was considered university, or universitas Latin, commonly used as the language in which lectures were given, for university in medieval times, and what is now considered a university in the current era ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main four disciplines that were established to be studied in medieval universities were theology, law, medicine, and letters what we know today as liberal arts ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). Oxford University originally specialized in the arts, civil and canon law, and theology in the twelfth century, incorporating medicine as a track of study in the thirteenth century. Oxford, along with Bologna, Paris, and Montpelier belonged to the primary band of European universities in medieval times (Cobban 4). The universities in the Middle Ages existed not solely for the purpose of teaching, but also to facilitate research and debate, and that its curriculum covered both religious and secular subjects ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). In addition to the four main disciplines of study previously mentioned, logical analysis applied to all subjects being studied. In the Middle Ages, students gained a facility in the application of rational argument to intellectual propositions, the essence of the scholastic method as it had evolved from the twelfth century and even earlier (Cobban 150). Students attending medieval English universities studied the trivium, consisting of classes focusing on the effective usage of logic, grammar, and rhetoric. Arithmetic and astronomy, a mix of classical, Arabic, and contemporary sources, also played a major role in specific subjects studied in medieval universities (Cobban 155 57). Although the universities in medieval times taught subjects that are worldly, English scholars were subject to ecclesiastical courts. An abundance of scholars not only received a degree from the university, but they also acquired clerical status (Cobban 2). In the days since the formation of the university in the Middle Ages, the amount of courses available for students to study has increased drastically, as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Negative Thoughts And Shame Addiction Negative Thoughts and Shame Addiction Posted on July 20 by johnmerideth Addiction When we think about addiction, it seems we mostly talk about substances or activities and rarely about the deeply set emotions that come with being an addict. Recently I watched the HBO special Addiction, and was struck by its limited scope in relating dependence or addiction to thoughts. As I watched the segments, I wondered if they had considered the number of ordinary people struggling with the less obvious but equally debilitating addiction to shame. Shame drives tapes within the mind of each person in slightly different ways but the outcome for most of us is the same...unfulfilling choices. In the HBO special they did cover how brain imaging research, MRI, illustrates the way in which the animal brain, the limbic part of our neural anatomy, overrides the decision making prefrontal lobe. It can be a smell or place or the intensity of a conversation...whatever the cause...once the addiction/dependence circuit is triggered there is little time for the do you really want to do that thought to emerge and take hold before the flight or fight response kicks into overdrive. What started as a survival mechanism, over time, becomes a sure fire method for self abuse and dis ease. For most of us there is a mental leap to be made between negative thinking induced by shame and addiction or dependence. We have trouble with the addicted label, at least in part, due to the stigma attached to the words ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Descriptive Essay On The Creperie A chalkboard caught my eye as a I strolled down the streets of Old Town Flagstaff. Scribbled in an array of colors was a quote by Nelson Mandela No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, then they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite . It was sat in front of a little alcove of an eatery called The Creperie. Seeing the establishment transported me back to the summer of my freshman year when I went to Paris with my family and enjoyed artisan crepes in a little cafe near the Seine river. My stomach immediately began to grumble just thinking about those crepes, and I decided then that I would try out The Creperie. However, the service, food, and ambiance would need to be superb in order to match the level of the authentic French cuisine that I ve enjoyed. When I walked through the door, moreso opening in the brick wall, of The Creperie, I was greeted with a warm smile by a middle aged Hispanic woman. She asked me about my day, my studies at college, and how I enjoyed living in Flagstaff. Though this may come across to most as normal niceties, she seemed to be genuinely interested in what I had to say. Not being familiar with the menu items, I asked her which dessert crepe she preferred. This was met with her giving me different options for different taste preferences Nutty Nana for those who enjoy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The film Young Frankenstein directed by Mel Brooks, 1974 Young Frankenstein is a series of hilarious humour scenes. To create humour exaggerated dialogue was used. This exaggeration made the dialogue sound ridiculous. When Frankenstein said throw the first switch then the second and third, each time getting louder and louder. • 7. Barbie Impact On Teenage Girls Children are usually influenced by the toys they play with in their childhood. While most toys come and go as fad fades, one particular doll has withstood the test of time: Barbie. She has shaped the lives of many teenage girls in the ways they want to look or the lives they want to be; she has been their pop culture icon. Nevertheless, Barbie s perfect appearance and life are unrealistic. Barbie exemplifies how a perfect doll adversely affects on teenage girls development such as appearance dissatisfaction, physical transformations, and eating disorders. The first negative impact of Barbie on teenage girls is their feelings of appearance dissatisfaction. Barbie has a perfect image with a skinny body, slim waist, and beautiful face, which seems to be an ideal model for teenage girls. As a result, teenage girls want to have the same perfect body as Barbie. Therefore, the attractive doll makes teenager girls feel dissatisfied with themselves and have low confidence about their body. They are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through Barbie s visual aspect and her perfect life with a luxury house, fancy jewelry, fashionable outfits, and handsome boyfriend, teenage girls could be persuaded that being beautiful is the most important matter in their life. They want to apply make up like Barbie. However, achieving the level of physical perfection that Barbie has requires more than just make up. As a result, teenage girls could try to have plastic surgery in order to achieve an attractive body like her because Barbie gives them the expectation of being physically perfect. For example, Pixee Fox, a Swede, underwent more than one hundred plastic surgeries in attempt to make her look like Barbie. Pixee may be an extreme example of how Barbie has shaped the lives of teenage girls all around the world, but her experience demonstrates Barbie is not just a toy; she is the motivation of physical ... • 8. Han-Chinese Violence The violence that is occurring in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region amongst the Uyghurs and the Han Chinese, stems from the conflict and debate between the Uyghurs and the People Republic of China (PRC) in 1975. According to Gardner Bovington, there is a diverging perspective on the history of Xinjiang; to the Chinese historical perspective, in 1795, once the Qing general conquered the vast territory [...it became] an integral piece of Chinese national territory (Bovington 2). While to the Uyghurs, such concurring of land did not occur, allowing the Uyghurs to believe that they are still a distinct [...] nation, with its own rightful homeland, history, culture, and language (Bovington 2). Due to the strong authoritarian regime China centers itself upon, media outlets are potentially inaccurate sources of information. The CCP controls the outflow of information released by the media, due to such control over media outlets, China is able to manipulate any situation in order to gain support and sympathy. In reference to the Global Conflict Tracker, by China labeling the Uyghurs as a radicalized population it leads to the connotation that the Uyghurs are associated with either the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) or the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) posing a direct terrorist risk to China (Darker blue). By China attempting to gain international support via identifying terrorist organizations within the PRC it allows China to address that this problem is not just a problem for China but also other countries who s enemies are terrorist organizations example, the United States and its fight against ISIS. Although this may seem as a benefit for China and its aims to integrate Xinjiang, for the Uyghurs it labels them as a potential terrorist organization; hence, limiting their ability to tell their side of the narrative and gain international sympathy limiting their ability to gain international support and address how the CCP is marginalizing the Uyghurs. • 9. Cause And Effect Of Climate Change Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe that global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the world. The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty people and leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to these unusually aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have seen massive reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with. The toxicity of the air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise. If the world keeps dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous consequences for the future generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic ice melting, reduction in animal populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal allergies to humans. The causes include the greenhouse effect and air pollution. In the past decade, Americans have seen global warming in the headlines constantly. About 71 percent of American scientists say that global warming is happening now (Saad). According to Linda Saad, Forty five percent of Americans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:25 31 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.Christ on the cross appeared to be weakness in the eyes of people; but that weakness of God was stronger than men and everything that men could produce. [22] The sign seeking Jews could not comprehend the mighty sign of the prophet Jonah, enacted before their very eyes; and the wisdom seeking Greeks could not discern the most profound wisdom in all history, not even after it had been preached to them! Education In Underdeveloped Countries Essay Tiara Agee Montgomery English 1101 September 21, 2014 Education in Underprivileged Countries Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world. He was right; an education can provide great opportunities for people. American children have the chance to receive a quality education, but that is not the case in some countries. In underprivileged countries, children may not receive an education. In the natural photograph taken in 2009 by American Press photographer Altaf Qadr, Rajeesh Kumar Sharma has started a free school under a bridge in India to educate underprivileged children living in surrounding neighborhoods. Most children in America will never have to experience a situation like this because the government has passed laws to guarantee every child receives a quality education, but what if the government did not regulate education laws? Imagine the children of the United States having to miss school because of household duties or cultural influences? These are common scenarios for children in underdeveloped countries. Inadequate government funding, household duties, and cultural influences affect whether or not a child receives a valuable education in an underprivileged country. When governments lack the finances to fund a proper school, children will not receive a quality education. The government officials in most developing countries simply do not include funding for primary education in their budget because it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I heard Veronica s voice on the other end.I was so confused, so I answered it. Hello... I said as I heard screaming and crying coming out of her voice. Mike, I need you to come to my house, something happen to Jessica. Fastly I snatched my things and dashed to my car. It was pouring rain. Grabbing the moist dripping car door handle I carelessly swung the door open.I put my keys in the ignition as fast as I possibly could, and hit the gas pedal with all the force in my body. The police told me that she experienced little to no as her body flew out the car. Veronica was uncontrollably crying and I was just speechless. Both of our jaws were just dropped. They could literally touch the ground. The officer told Veronica that Jessica is in the hospital and she on life support. I wanted to go see my daughter for the last time, so V and I got in the ambulance car that was still outside the house and drove to the hospital. As I arrived to the hospital my mind was spinning. The lady at the front desk walked us to Jessica s room. I saw her and my stomach dropped to the floor. I lost it. I lost her. She was laying on the white, raggy scary looking hospital bed. The only girl in my life. My beautiful young, caring and perfect daughter was ripped away from me by an idiotic 45 year old drunk driver. Just gruesome. • 15. Essay on The Allegory of the Cave In Plato s Republic, the great philosopher describes what is needed to achieve a perfect society. He addresses several subjects still debated in today s society, such as justice, gender roles, and the proper form of education. He discusses these issues through his main character, Socrates. Socrates, another well known philosopher for his time, happens upon a group of men, and what begins as a modest question, leads into a series of debates, metaphors, and allegories. Perhaps the most discussed allegory in today s popular culture is the Allegory of the Cave. Over the past decade, several movies have mimicked the fantasy, the most profitable being the Matrix Trilogy. But what makes this story so fascinating? Through it, Plato attempts to map ... Socrates summarizes their belief system stating, such men would hold that the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things, (Book VII, 515c). After describing the setting of the cave, Socrates asks his audience to imagine that one of the prisoners breaks free from his bonds, and sees the fire and the statues themselves. He notes that there would first come pain as his eyes adjust to the new light, and disbelief, as everything he had previously thought to be real is suddenly proven artificial. However, Socrates assures his audience that the man would eventually come to realize that the people and the fire are more real than the shadows had ever been. He would ultimately grasp how the fire creates the shadows of the statues, creating a mere copy of the real thing. He would then conclude that the fire and the statues are the most real things in the world. Though the man would then seem to be educated, Socrates takes the fantasy farther by dragging the freed prisoner out of the cave and into the actual world. At first, the man s eyes would dart from the brightness of the sun, and watch only shadows. Eventually, his eyes would allow him to look at reflections and finally at the actual objects themselves. He then realizes that the trees, flowers, houses, rocks, and animals he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sandra Harding s Science And Social Inequality A Review of Sandra Harding s Science and Social Inequality In Science and Social Inequality, Sandra Harding argues that both the philosophy and practices of modern Western science ultimately function to advance global social inequalities. Drawing on feminist, postcolonialist, multicultural, and antiracist critiques of Western science, Harding supports this argument and exposes the ways in which modern Western science engenders social injustices particularly within the contexts of militarism, environmental destruction, and Western expansion. Through the nuanced and multilayered review and analysis of these critiques, Harding proposes ways to re conceptualize the sciences and formulates a persuasive case for the emergence of feminist, practice focused philosophies of science. Science and Social Inequality is divided into two sections; this paper will examine the structural organization of Harding s text with particular attention to how the initial section supports her proposed reconceptualization of the sciences on a global scale. My aim is to review themes and key points of the text in order to evaluate the case Harding presents for the utility and necessity of a postcolonial, feminist science studies. • 18. The Decline Of The Mayan Civilization The early Mayan civilization had lowly beginnings. They rose to remarkable heights in a seemingly inhospitable land. As Maya scholar Arthur Demarest said Such a civilization, had no business there. The Mayans had to battle with torrential rain in the rainy season, and when the weather turned hot, it scorched the land and their water supplies would plummet. They were always faced with floods or drought. They were probably forced here due to overcrowding from other tribes. But nonetheless they began to conquer these threats as they learned advanced farming techniques to make the shallow earth fertile. They burned and cleared jungle to make room for their agriculture, particularly maize. They then began the process of crop rotation, long before anyone else. As the Mayan civilization began its steady uprising they began to redouble their efforts, they started composting, cultivating, they built irrigation systems and began to terrace the landscape to make farming more efficient and prevent erosion. They dammed rivers and flooded swamplands and marshes to create rich farmland. They instituted transport systems to move fertile silt and mud from lowlands to higher enclosed gardens and farms and created man made lakes and ponds that they used to fish and systems of corrals held wild game. They maximized their talents and squeezed out enough nourishment to support their population which had risen to several million people. It took time but the Mayans began to thrive in the ... • 19. Addiction And Drug Abuse Many aspects contribute to an individual s ability to resist drug use and most importantly addiction, significantly fueling the debate whether it is nature or nurture that is the primary consideration in understanding addiction (Crofton, Zhang, Green, 2015). Addiction is a disease based on the ability of drugs and their use to alter a person s brain and behavior whereby they compulsively seek drugs despite any other associated risk (Stanis Andersen, 2014). Drug use is thought to alter the brain s dopamine surges where receptors for dopamine are reduced (Stanis Andersen, 2014). However, despite substantial research that supports addiction as a disease, controversy exists in that it is usually the individual who initially chooses to use drugs. Numerous observers support that is this primary voluntary choice that makes it difficult for some to see drugs addicts as anything other than criminal. Otherwise, drug use would probably be legal, and there would be few drug crimes. Focusing on resilience may be a consideration that could find support over a broader spectrum of beliefs. Resilience will be discussed. Genetics and environmental factors play an import role in deterring a person s vulnerability to addiction (Crofton, Zhang, Green, 2015). Understanding resistance thereby swaying the potential choice that leads to the chronic disease of addiction would perhaps benefit society the more than new laws and new prisons. Moreover, understanding environmental enrichment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Universal Design For Learning In the Westglen School, K 6: Universal Design for Learning video, we see boys and girls of several different age groups that range from kindergarten to sixth grade. The classrooms seem diverse ethnically and culturally. We are shown that the universal design for learning means each child is included no matter what their learning style is or if they have a disability. Learning styles applies to Gardner s theory of multiple intelligences which dismisses the idea of general intelligences and defines intelligence in terms of distinct sets of processing operations that permit individuals to engage in a wide range of culturally valued activities (Berk and Meyers, 2016, p. 449). In this video, the professionals identify learning barriers or missed opportunities associated with each child and apply their needs in the classroom setting. • 33. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo In his novel, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo identifies the principle social evils of French society through the actions and qualities of his characters. By depicting each of his characters struggles through destitute and oppressed measures, Hugo is able to identify the social errors of 19th century France. The fact that characters such as Valjean, Javert, Fantine, and Cosette, attempt to rise above poverty and redeem themselves indicate that such inequalities did, and still do, exist to this day. Through the use of feminist ideals and the criminal injustice system, Hugo attacks the principle social evils that each of his characters face in Les Miserables. In the early 19th century, most women were subject to gender discrimination and viewed as weaker components in France. One of the first characters attacked by such injustice is the former factory worker and prostitute, Fantine. Having been discovered as a mother of an illegitimate child, Fantine is thrown out of the work place and turns towards prostitution instead. Deprived of hope and redemption, Fantine endures through much suffering and harassment from her male superiors in order to provide for her child. While walking down the street one evening, Fantine passes by a man, who, taking advantage of the moment when she turns... seizes a handful of snow from the sidewalk, and throws it hastily down her back between her naked shoulders (69). • 38. Qualitative Research Is Good At Simplifying And Managing... Qualitative research is good at simplifying and managing data without destroying complexity and context. Qualitative methods are highly appropriate for questions where preemptive reduction of the data will prevent discovery. If the purpose is to learn from the participants in a setting or a process the way they experience it, the meanings they put on it, and how they interpret what they experience, the researcher needs methods that will allow for discovery and do justice to their perceptions and the complexity of their interpretations. Qualitative methods have in common the goal of generating new ways of seeing existing data. If the purpose is to construct a theory or a theoretical framework that reflects reality rather than the researchers own perspective or prior research results, one may need methods that assist the discovery of theory in data. If the purpose is to understand phenomena deeply and in detail, the researcher needs methods for discovery of central themes and analysis of core concerns. Each of these suggestions has a flip side. If one knows what is being hypothesized and what they are likely to find, if one do not need to know the complexity of others understandings, if one is testing prior theory rather than constructing new frameworks, or if one is simply describing a situation rather than deeply analyzing it, it is possible that one should not be working qualitatively. Felix Mendelssohn once remarked that music is more specific about what it expresses than words written about those expressions could ever be. That music has the power to express, convey and illicit powerful emotions is without question, however the issue of music s moral and ethical power, and how that power affects individuals and societies, is one that receives too little attention in our post modern world. As mentioned earlier, a significant aspect of the ancient Chinese concept of music was the effect of music on one s psyche and the issue of freedom and responsibility in all musical pursuits. When compared to the rationales and motivation of artists of our modern age the Chinese ideal of music making seems highly enlightened as evident in the consideration given to the effect of music upon the character of the listener. If individuals were affected by music it stood to reason that the larger society could be influenced positively or negatively as well. The ancient Chinese book The Memorial of Music states: Under the effect of music, the five social duties are without admixture, the eyes and the ears are clear, the blood and the vital energies are balanced, habits are reformed, customs are improved, the empire is at complete peace.
