Should Orcas Should Not Be Allowed In Captivity Essay
Have you ever gone and seen orcas( killer whales) at a park like sea world. Do you really know how
they feel. Sure you might be happy, but are they? At sea world they have not been taken orcas from
wild, but instead they have been over breeding the ones they have already have. That is a lot of over
breeding and in which can hurt the orcas. Orcas should not be kept in captivity because they have
shorter life spans, it gives them health problems, and when forced to live in captivity they become
killing machines. Orcas should not be kept in captivity because they have shorter life spans.Orcas in
the wild have an average life expectancy of 30 to 50 years their estimated maximum lifespan is 60 to
70 years for males and 80 to over 100 for females. The average age of death for orcas who have died

The Muscular Dystrophy Was First Discovered By Guillaume...
Duchenne muscular dystrophy was first discovered by Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne in the
1860 s, but due to lack of medical knowledge little was known until the 1980 s. It was in 1986 that
researchers that were supported by the MDA, muscular dystrophy association, identified the particular
X chromosome that leads to DMD, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dystrophin is the protein that is
associated with the gene and was named in 1987.The DMD gene is the second largest gene to date,
and it produces dystrophin.(Genome, 2013) Lack of the protein Dystrophin in the muscle cells causes
them to weaken and become fragile. (MDA, 2015). DMD is an inherited disorder, but there are rare
cases where it can spontaneously appear in a child with no previous family history due to a random
mutation in moms X chromosome. DMD is a gender specific disease that only appears in males.
Females are carriers in their X Chromosome and they have the chance of passing the disease on to
their children, 50 50 to a girl and 50 50 to a boy. If the girl does receive the gene she becomes a
carrier. If the boy gets the gene then he has the disease. Males do not pass on the gene to their children
because they pass on the Y chromosome and the disease is X specific. Some female carriers have
indicators of being a carrier by having symptoms of cardiomyopathy, shortness of breath during
exercise, and muscle weakness in the back, arms, and legs. There have been very rare instances where
a girl has not received a

The Ethical Dilemma Of Performance Enhancing Drugs
Benchmark Assignment: Ethical Dilemmas
These days it seems as society is constantly being faced with Ethical Dilemmas. Whether it is normal
everyday citizens, actors, business executives, and even athletes. The way that every person deal with
ethical dilemmas is by relying on their worldview. The world of professional sports is a very tough
and competitive place. It is full of top level athletes that are masters in their respective sports and the
struggle that they all face is to be better than everyone else. With all these athletes working hard and
looking for new ways to better themselves, some take the easy way over the right way. In this paper,
the ethical dilemma of performance enhancing drugs being used in sports will be addressed ... Show

Core Beliefs
Some athletes view doping, the use of performance enhancing drugs, as the only way to keep up with
athletic competition (Performance Enhancing Drugs, 2017). With it being such a big issue many
people are curious on how the Christian worldview deals with the topic. The Christian worldview does
not specifically address the ethical dilemma that surrounds performance enhancing drugs. While I
admit that it does not directly talk about PEDs, in Jesus time they had none, there are certain core
beliefs that can be applied to it. Firstly, we need to look at our bodies. People aligned with the
Christian worldview know that because of the fall our bodies were marred from God s beginning
perfect creation of us (The Ethics of Enhancement, 2017). The Bible states how God views our body
saying Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you
have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in
your body and in your spirit, which are God s (NKJV, 1 Corinthians. 6:19 20). If our body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit, then it would not be right to defile our bodies by injecting it with drugs for
performance. It is also trying to change and determine what and how our bodies are rather than how
God created us. There is also the issue of performance enhancing drugs being fair and considered
cheating. King Solomon writes that Better is

The Role Of Overgrazing In The Great Plains
Natalie,
I enjoyed reading your post and about the overgrazing in the Great Plains. Over grazing was growing
so rapidly in the 1800 s and later in that century caused the public rangelands to become severely
depleted and overcrowded (U.S Department of the Interior, 2015). The Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) reports that after the implementation of the Taylor Grazing Act (TGA) of 1934 there was a
significant decrease in grazing livestock on public lands by ranchers, decrease in livestock population,
and increased operation sustainability and stability (U.S Department of the Interior, 2015). As a result,
between ranchers cattle, sheep and horses, sustainable grass is scarce and can hardly support a variety
of herds. (Rayburn, 2000). In contrast, journalist Robin Walters and Sebastian Tsocanos report that
there are not many overgrazed pastures at all (Rediscover The Prairie, 2014). In addition, they find
that it is not a bad thing for a few herds to be around. Moreover, they express a lack or worry for
overgrazing creating another situation similar to the one during the 1800 s that was widely considered
a Dust Bowl (Rediscover The Prairie, 2014). In addition to the current limitations on land for the vast
majority of ranchers, there is now a careful thought taken into account for future generations which
prevents some ranchers to not be excessive like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Robin and Sebastian specify the current problem on public land is the over rest of grass
which is arguable just as bad for the grassland area and its biodiversity as overgrazing (Rediscover

The Broken Spears Focus paper
In The broken spears, author Miguel Leon Portilla gives accounts from the Spanish conquest of the
Aztec Empire in 1519. These accounts include several texts written by surviving indigenous people of
the Aztec civilization; these perspectives truly shows the emotion, fear, and uncertainty the Aztec s felt
in depth during this time. With the accounts in our textbook and the broken spears, we are able to draw
conclusions viewing both facts and experiences through this prevailing point in world history.

the broken spears explain the massacre during the fiesta honoring Huitzilopochtli in great detail in
chapter eleven.
Chapter eleven in the broken spears also describes how small pox broke out in Tenochtitlan, sores
erupted on our faces, our breasts, our bellies; we were covered with agonizing sores from head to toe.
4 The text continues in dramatic detail about the pain, suffering, and deaths the people of Tenochtitlan
experienced. Traditions encounters vaguely describes this epidemic as, Small pox raged though the
city, killing inhabitants by the tens of thousands. 5
Ten years before the arrival of the Spaniards the Aztecs experienced eight bad omens described by

how, the natives were overcome with terror, weeping and shouting and crying out. 6 In the following

The Daylight Is Dim, Dark, And Gloomy
The daylight is dim. Dark, and gloomy. The trees are dense and haunting. The tall lifeless trees with
bare broken limbs surround a lady with a babushka, black coat, and leather gloves. The lady is looking
down. Her emotionless face shows of a lady that has been suffering for a lifetime. The younger lady
next to her is a nun wearing a religious habit looking down and away. Her face shows of sorrow as
well. She looks as if she is praying and wondering how the world could be so cruel. The trees are
skinny and tall that tell a true story. The trees show the hatred, sorrow, poverty, and hardships of the
past. It s an eerie forest that looks as if it s from a fictional movie such as Harry Potter or Lord of the

hardly a forest at all. It s a place where two ladies are sitting beside the grave of their family. In

Assignment 1 Critical Thinking Assignment
Critical Thinking Assignment 1 Shaylynn Cote The main point of this paragraph is to describe that
silencing the expression of opinion is a peculiar evil that is robbing the human race. This argument is
written from the perspective of the authors opposition, this is shown by the statement the objection
likely to be made to this argument would probably take some such form as the following . The main
point being We may, and must, assume our opinion to be true for the guidance of our own conduct: .
Complete liberty of contradicting and disproving our opinion is the very condition which justifies us
in assuming it s truth for purposes of action; and on no other terms can a being with human faculties
have any rational assurance of being right is the main point as it acts as a rebuttal to the previous
paragraph fulfilling the purpose of this passage. Using the statement I, answer is a major indicator the
opinion stated in this paragraph is that of the author.. The steady habit of correcting and completing
his own opinion by collating it with those of others, so far from causing doubt and hesitation in
carrying it into practice, is the only stable foundation for a just reliance on it; (from the seventh
paragraph) is an example of an intellectual virtue. The man performs a habit of opening up his work to
criticism as well as comparing his work to that of others in order to find inconsistency. This habit

The Edmonton Police Service s (EPS) vision is as follows: To make Edmonton the safest major city in
Canada and for the EPS to be recognized as a leader in policing (Edmonton Police Service, 2014). In
comparison, the city of Edmonton s vision can be summarized as follows: by the year 2040,
Edmonton is an energy driven city mindful of renewable energy sources; Edmonton is a design city,
rich in urban, architectural, and environmental design; Edmonton s streets are safe to walk and there is

ValuesThe values outlined by the EPS are integrity, accountability, respect, innovation, courage, and
community (Edmonton Police Service, 2014). For the city of Edmonton s values I referred to their
conditions of success which they outline as follows: organizational capacity (for example, fiscal and
human); sound management practice and process; enabling infrastructure (for example, information
technology); and, effective communication (The Way Ahead, 2018). Comparison of ValuesObviously,
the EPS find it imperative to be a professional police force that is accountable in their actions and
integral in their methods. Also, they find it important to be courageous and treat people with respect.
The city of Edmonton mentioned effective communication and sound management practices as a
value towards creating their mission. This is similar to the EPS values of integrity, accountability, and
respect. In order for both entities to meet their outlined missions / visions they will be required to
ensure that among their employees and management there is an effective dialogue that promotes
accountability amongst their employees. Furthermore, the city of Edmonton s value of organizational
capacity aligns with EPS value of innovation. Essentially, EPS will need to expand their technologies,

Synthesis Essay On Huckleberry Finn
Huck Finn Synthesis Essay: The Great Race Debate Slavery stretches its cruel branches into decades
of history. According to the American Anti slavery and Civil Rights Timeline on Ushistory.org, the
portuguese were the first to negotiate a slave trade in 1472. The portuguese slave trade agreement also
included ivory and gold as well as slaves. In 1610, the first ship carrying slaves touched down in the
new world. Four years after that the British Colony of Massachusetts became the first colony to
recognize slavery as a legal institution. For as long as slavery has been a legal institution abolitionists
have been advocating for the freedom and rights of slaves. In 1671 George Fox, the founder of the
quakers, talked out against the institution of slavery in the new world. In 1861 America ripped itself
apart fighting a war, known as the American Civil War, that would ultimately abolish slavery in the
United States of America. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was written and published
after the end of the civil war, but is set forty to fifty years before the beginning of the civil war. At this
time it was socially acceptable to own slaves, especially in the south where Huckleberry Finn lives. It
was not uncommon for slaves to be beaten or whipped if their work was unsatisfactory. Slaves were
treated as people without rights and property to their white owners. Today the transatlantic slave trade
has left its mark on America. There are still white supremacist groups, like the KKK, who believe that
they are the superior race and black people should be eradicated. Racial profiling of black people has
been an increasing issue to. Black people are getting killed and sent to jail for crimes that if a white
person were to commit, the white person would receive a lesser sentence. Today racism is still running
rampant in America. Many schools have banned teachers from teaching on Twain s Huckleberry Finn
for various reasons. One of those reasons is that Twain uses the word nigger, and he uses it to many
times. At the time that this book was written, slaves and free black people were called niggers. So
Twain in his writing is being politically correct when writing about Jim and the other slaves

Analysis Of The Man From Snowy River By Banjo Paterson
The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson 1. Andrew Barton Paterson, more commonly known
as Banjo Paterson, was a famous Australian poet who was born on the 17th February, 1863. He spent
his early life at a farm near Yass, in between Melbourne and Sydney. His early education came from a
governess, but as soon as he was able to ride a pony by himself, he was taught at a school in Binalong.
At 11, Paterson went to Sydney Grammar School whilst his family was living in Gladesville. He left
SCS at 16 after failing an examination. From 1885, he started having poetry published in Australian
magazine, The Bulletin, where he first coined the pseudonym Banjo , the name of his favourite horse.
In 1899, Paterson became a war correspondent for multiple newspapers, but in 1908, he decided to
take a break from journalism writing and focus more on his poetry. In WWI, Paterson served as an
ambulance driver and returned to Australia in 1919. His third collection of poetry, Saltbush Bill JP,
was published soon after. Paterson died of a heart attack in 1941, just 12 days before his 77th birthday.
2. The Man from Snowy River tells the story of a horse that escapes from a ranch. The owner offers a
lot of money to capture the prized possession and so many drovers set off to capture the horse. The
drovers pursue the horse across the country, but are defeated by the rough terrain. Then the Man from
Snowy River steps up and charges down the slope. He is lost to view by the rest of the group, but
reappears later, tired and battered, with the horse trailing behind him. 3. The Man from Snowy River
holds plenty of language devices that help capture the mood and setting of the poem. The old man
with his hair as white as snow makes use of simile to help describe one of the men on a horse. The
simile makes the line more interesting and less monotonous by showing what he looks like rather than
straight out telling. The man is made out to be strong and fierce but the similarity of his hair and snow
juxtaposes this power as snow is thought to be delicate and beautiful. Another technique is the
metaphor And the stock horse snuffs the battle with delight. This hints that the drovers must be
prepared for the dangerous job ahead of them, if

The Middle Of The 19th Century
Introduction
The middle of the 19th century, it was thought to be an unexceptional practice if a company s purchase
of its own shares back. However, the point of view against the continued existence of the power began
to grow in force after the advancement of the model of limited liability. The ruling out on share
repurchases was as a final point added into the common law in Trevor v Whithworth. The prevention
was afterward enacted in companies legislation in England and subsequently in the different
Commonwealth countries, as well as Australia. The Act integrated two requirements of particular
consideration to the Lords. Firstly, there was a condition that the company should give its nominal
capital. Secondly, the legislation provided for an all inclusive practice for reducing capital and the
assets of the company.
It is an essential reason of corporate law that the share capital of a company should be maintained.
Nonetheless, a corporation limited by shares is open to shrink its share capital by a ruling of its
members provided that the decrease is not prohibited by its Bylaws and Memorandum of Association
and the company act in accordance with the procedures set out in the Corporation Act 2001. The
concept of reduction in share capital is delineated as the method of lessening a company s shareholder
equity through share cancellations and buy backs. The reduction of funds is done by companies for
several reasons as well as the increasing value of shareholder and

Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked...
The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where he
takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way the
Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word choice,
tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the reader think that
he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced.
Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such
sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81,
2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cubical showed every sign of having been built for a man just about my size, (p 81). Again
Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling for
twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I began
to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the reader that
the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this because he tells
the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words, Fletcher lets the reader
know that the man is imagining being with the Indian.
Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience what it
must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this writing.
Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader what it must
have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job of making the
reader believe.
The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the writing
when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his home. I
saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom when he sat
up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82).

means that they prefer to be alone, and they like to stay on one place for long periods of time. The
only time more than one black widow will be found together is their during mating season. Chapter 18
The Black Widow Bite Upon getting bitten by a black widow, you should seek medical attention

most people do survive. If you think a black widow, or any other spider has bitten you, it is always

College Students and Sub-culture
Sub cultures are something everyone is a part of in any society they live in. Everyone lives in some
kind of culture; everyone has an ethnic background, a social standing, possible political, moral, and
religious views and each of these items submits that person into multiple sub groups within their
culture. I, myself, am a part of numerous sub cultures.
Starting with the largest I am a human being; I live and function as a human and not as an animal or
plant. This seems a little farfetched to apply as a sub culture but it is a proven fact that even some
animal groups have communities and cultures of their own. Also, there are even some humans who
choose to live an animalistic lifestyle. In addition, I am Caucasian or white ... Show more content on

With this being said that means that I am also part of a popular sub culture within American
Universities. Although, U.S. News reported in 2012 that Communication Studies was not among the
top five most popular majors at Troy University. According to these statistics students whose choses
major is Communication Studies make up less than 7% of the student population (U.S. News). So
although I can identify with many in this sub culture within America I cannot relate with nearly as
many people of this sub culture at Troy University. I can still create relationships with college students
in general despite my major.
There are not many nonverbal factors to analyze for this sub culture but there are quite a few verbal
factors. College students have a language of their own. They know the struggles of class schedules,
club meetings, registration, living on a dime, and buying books dirt cheap. This verbal code often
disconnects college students from people similar to their age due to the fact that much of the subjects
to be spoken about are quite different. This is not to say that college students cannot communicate
with non college students but they often find it easier to relate to those who understand their lingo,
joys, struggles, and more.
The societal class that college attendees belong to has always had the stigma of being the haves of
society. In recent years; however, many who attend college come from

Natural and Sexual Selection of Vestigial and Wild Type...
Natural and Sexual Selection of Vestigial and Wild Type Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract
In this experiment, vestigial flies as well as wild type flies were used to create some diversity as well
as test one of our hypotheses. Our hypotheses are as follows; 1) The wild type flies will have a greater
relative fitness compared to the vestigial flies based on only sexual selection. The wild type has a
relative fitness of 1 since it has fully functional wings. Vestigial Winged flies are not as sexually
appealing since their wings are not functional and the wing movement is a vital part of their mating
ritual. 2) The vestigial fly will have a greater relative fitness when considering both sexual and natural
selection. With the presence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the presence of natural selection (fly paper hanging from top of cage) posing a larger threat to
the wild flies b/c they can fly better, this will allow vestigial flies to prosper better.
Materials and Methods
To set up this experiment, two twenty five gallon aquariums, 3 petri dishes, 200 flies, rotten bananas,
and yeast were used. The bananas chosen to be an accelerant for the growth of the yeast and were
frozen so they would be easier to cut. The yeast was used because the drosophila melanogaster prefer
this as a food source. The vestigial and wild type flies were sexed (to determine their sex), sorted, and
counted. An initial population size of 100 total flies was decided so that it would be easier to
determine the phenotypic percentage of the total population. Fly paper was placed in one of the sets of
cages to impose a method of natural selection as well as the sexual selection which is being solely
tested by the other set of cages.
It was decided that there would be 80 vestigial flies and 20 wild type flies to total to an initial
population of 100 drosophila. Next, the flies were anesthetized flies using Fly Nap. The flies were
counted out to reach desired ratio, sexing the flies making sure there are equal amounts of males and
females to be sure there is ample individuals to allow successful mating. The fly s food was prepared
by taking a frozen rotten banana, cutting it in half, mashing up the banana meat, and mixing yeast into
it. The

born to European men and their Aboriginal wives, (Sprague, 1998). When the fur trade moved west, in
the 1700s and 1800s, many French Canadian fur traders found the Aboriginal wives and had children,
and there are about 350,000 400,000 Métis in Canada alone. The Métis played a vital role in the
success of the Fur Trade. Not only were the Métis skilled buffalo hunters, but they were also raised to
appreciate both their Aboriginal and European cultures. Over time, the Métis became valuable
employees of both fur trade companies: The North West Company and even the Hudson s Bay
Company because the Métis were skilled voyageurs, buffalo hunters, traders, and interpreters,
(Sprague, 1998).
Ray, (2015), explains that The Hudson s Bay Company was founded by French traders named Medard
Chouart des Groseilliers, and Pierre Esprit Raddison, who first proposed a trading company to reach
the interior for better fur access. Once the posts for the Hudson s Bay Company were established, they
began trading with the Aboriginal people in Canada, this came to be known as the Fur Trade, which
will be further explained below. The Aboriginal people would trade pemmican and other furs for
manufactured items. This continued for many years until the Hudson s Bay Company began wanting

The Characteristics Of Robert Walton s Frankenstein
In the first few letters, opening the book, readers are introduced to the writer, Robert Walton, a sailor
with hopes of discovery. While addressing his letters to his sister, readers are able to follow Waltons
oceanic journey to the Arctic. In his letters he speaks of this journey, what ushers his passion to learn,
the story of his upbringing and his desire for a companion. Readers can see that he is not only driven,
and curious, but empathetic and lonesome as well.
Upon reading these quotes, it soon becomes clear that Frankenstein has a longing to retain
information. He is able to portray this educational longing through phrases such as having an eager
desire to learn, key word being eager. Frankenstein and I somewhat differ on our attitude towards
learning. I wish I was as motivated as he, but I lack the desire that steers him. I do desire education,
but just not to the extent that Frankenstein does. Not only does Frankenstein speak of having access to
a routine education, such as a school, but he also speaks of his ability to self teach himself. In order to
do so, he must have an immense amount of maturity and an ample amount of both independence and
self sufficiency. I only wish that I had these characteristics as strong as he.

Alcoholics Anonymous And The Philosophies Essay
Alcoholics Anonymous and The Philosophies in Between:
Conflicting Philosophies Between the Original Twelve Step Alcohol s Anonymous Program and The
New Counseling Profession
Brandon R. McIver
University of Oregon
Abstract
This paper concerns the notoriously well known successful treatment program, Alcoholics
Anonymous twelve step program, and contrasts it to what would be referred to as a revised version of
the original program. Alcoholics Anonymous has been one of the primary sources of addiction
recovery in individuals for numerous years. It allows its participants, who are deemed to be part of an
international fellowship of both men and women alike, an opportunity to join in a camaraderie that is
self supporting, multiracial, nonprofessional, and conveniently available in a variety of locations. It
aims to let its participants share personal experiences and partake in a group atmosphere where the
lead counselor bans judgment. The fundamental values of Alcoholics Anonymous exist in the twelve
core steps that attendees are encouraged to follow in an effort to redeem control of their alcohol
addiction problem. Alcoholics Anonymous has been proven to change participants principal values
and assist them in changing their perceived outlook on life for an increased potential at living a
healthier and addiction free lifestyle. However, the twelve core values of Alcoholics Anonymous have
been challenged and questioned in an effort to

Levitt And Dubner s Superfreakanomics
Superfreakanomics is set up in chapters of short excerpts that dive into different topics ranging from
illegal industries, such as prostitution and other examples, such as the safety behind using car seats
and the altruistic nature of humans. Each chapter provides many stories, data, background, and
commentary on how this system is functioning poorly, could be improved, or related to other larger
issues in society, such as combating terrorism. In their introduction, Levitt and Dubner discuss seeing
the world from the perspective of economists and include being a person in an undeveloped nation
such as India and the transition from horses to cars, as well as talking about statistics and the bending
of knowledge. This introduction shows that every day events can be quite interesting and can be a
starting point to conversation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prostitutes do mostly part time work and can make a lot of money to support themselves, as opposed
to taking other jobs, due to the fact that the work is illegal and customers are willing to pay. In
addition to supply and demand to support oneself, the motivation for this field of work is also related
to differences in how much money a woman earns compared to a man. A woman is willing to be a
prostitute, since she can charge a higher. With relations to economics, prostitutes are involved in cost
benefit analysis when it comes to having a pimp, just like people do when it comes to real estate

The Murder Of James Bulger
An Essay On The Murder of James Bulger James Patrick Bulger was born on the 16th of March,
1990, to Ralph and Denise Bulger in Kirkby, Merseyside. When he was only two years old, James was
lured through the village of Walton, led up to the railway track and murdered by Jon Venables and
Robert Thompson, both ten years old. His body found a week later. Now, almost 20 years later, after
the divorce of James parents and the release of the boys, the James Bulger case is still as tragic and
atrocious as it was when it happened. Venables and Thompson had disruptive childhoods, as neither
had responsible parent figures. Thompson grew up surrounded by neglect and domestic abuse in a

Venables and Thompson were seen earlier that day shoplifting from several stores as they observed
families with small children. When the boys approached James, they seized him by the hand and
marched him out of the shopping centre in a hurry. This moment was caught via CCTV cameras set
around the location at approximately 3:42 pm. Jon and Robert lead James on a nearing three mile walk
through Liverpool, first, to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The confused toddler sustained a
concussion as the boys joked and jeered over pushing him into the canal. During this period of time,
Venables, Thompson, and Bulger, who was in a distressed state, crying as he was dragged through the
streets were witnessed by nearly 40 people; all who assumed he was a relative or a lost boy they were
taking to the police station. Additionally, they ended up in Walton, but considering they were stood
opposite the Walton Police station, they panicked and pulled Bulger up a steep bank, leading out onto
a nearby railway. This railway was the exact location of which they began torturing him. The poor,
defenseless toddler, petrified as he screamed in agony and yelled for his mother was battered with
bricks and batteries. Moreover, he d also had paint thrown at him, and was beaten to a pulp with an
iron bar. Overall, the little boy was subjected to so much pain and physical harm that he d sustained 42

Re: $5 Billon Convertible Debt Offering Proposal
Dear Gentlemen:
We are pleased to present to you the salient features of our proposed $5B convertible debt offering for
your careful review and approval. We deemed it appropriate to walk you through the analytical
process in coming up with the right mix of conversion premium and coupon rate. We initially consider
a conversion premium of 25% and determine its corresponding coupon rate. We then explore the
appropriateness of such a premium and explore other conversion premium coupon rate combinations
and determine which combination would be optimal for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because of the nature of Mogen s business, wherein most of the company s assets are
intangibles, which is typical of a risky company. This makes issuance of straight debt more expensive
at around 5.75%, as the market will demand higher premium.
Given the above market perception of risk and growth opportunity, issuing a convertible bond is
appropriate because it would allow the company to raise capital at more advantageous terms than it
would when it issues straight debt. Investors would be willing to supply funds at a lower rate if they
can have the opportunity to benefit from the upside potential of the stock. Hence, the value of
convertible bonds becomes insensitive to the risk of the company. Investors would not be materially
affected if the company becomes more volatile as a result of added risk in the future because the call
option value of the convertible bond will likewise increase. Upside returns due to increase in risk will
also accrue to investors holding a convertible bond, while having a downside protection because of the
part debt nature of the convertible.
What is the method used to calculate the coupon rate?
We first derive the implied volatility of Mogen s stock using the Black Scholes option pricing model
The implied volatility of each of the eight outstanding options on MoGen s stock was obtained using

Socioeconomics, as defined by The American Psychological Association, is commonly conceptualized
as the social standing or class of an individual or group. It is often measured as a combination of
education, income and occupation. Socioeconomic inequality is the mal and unequal treatment of

The Effects Of Hearing Loss On A Child s Life
Hearing loss can have one of the biggest impacts on a child s life. Hearing is an essential tool used to
learn language; without the ability to hear, a child is missing out on key aspects that will help them
learn language. This is why it is crucial that hearing loss is detected early on, because the earlier it is
treated, the more likely the child is to develop listening and spoken language skills appropriate for
their age. Children that are born deaf are already at a disadvantage as the typical child is born with
around 20 weeks of listening experience already. It is important that we are proactive in identifying
children s hearing loss early, while their brain s neuroplasticity is still the greatest. Essentially,
children are in a race ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essay 2 Hearing aids are small devices that have made a huge impact on the hearing impaired. There
are four main parts that make up a hearing aid. First, there is the microphone; the microphone changes
acoustic signals into electric signals. An omnidirectional microphone picks up noise coming from all
directions, where as a directional microphone focuses on sound coming from a certain direction in
order to improve the signal to noise ratio. The next main part is the amplifier. The amplifier increases
the power of the converted signal where the receiver then converts the electric signals back to acoustic
signals and sends it through the ear mold into the ear. The last part of the hearing aid is the battery.
The battery is likely the most important part, as without the battery, the hearing aid would just act as a
really large ear plug. Hearing aids are an important piece of technology as they help individuals with a
hearing loss receive auditory input they might not otherwise hear. The technology inside a hearing aid
is capable of isolating certain sounds and amplifying them so that an individual with a hearing loss
that prevents them from hearing those sounds is now more likely to hear them. This is very important
for children. Children with hearing loss may be able to

Native American Pipe Ceremony Essay
The Pipe Ceremony is used for many different rituals and is used throughout many different tribes.
Most of the rituals pertain to the Native American s spiritual beliefs/religion, although some are for
other purposes. The Pipe Ceremony is of great importance to the Native American culture and the
pipes used are considered to be sacred items. Every aspect of the ceremony down to the way the pipe
itself is designed hold significance for these cultures. There are different pipes for different
ceremonies. The pipes also may be called by different names throughout the different tribes. The
substance used in the pipe is dependent upon the type of ceremony for which it is being used. One
needs to understand some of the basic religious beliefs of the Native American culture in order to
understand some of the references made in a pipe ceremony with their ritual actions. Native American
spirituality was born out of what they considered their agreement with god, which they refer to as the
Great Spirit or the Creator. Native Americans believe that the Creator gave them the land; this places
great importance upon the land and all things from it or on it such as plants, animals, and other things.

Most people when asked who their personnel hero is they name a family member. This is because a
parent s natural instinct is to protect their children and put their needs first. This trait is not just in

hero is someone who puts others before themselves. Parents tend to do this without thinking twice
about it. Although parents aren t saving hundreds of lives they are still considered heroes. Literally
anyone can be a hero in today s society. A hero can simply be a person that is strongly admired and

Marie Antoinette s Influence On The French Revolution
In 1755, Josèphe Jeanne Marie Antoinette was born as the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa; the
sovereign who ruled the Hapsburg Lorraine House in Austria. As a princess and a member of the
Hapsburg dynasty, she inherited good looks which earned her a title of youthful goddess of beauty and
virtue upon her arrival in France. At her age of fourteen, her mother sent her off to faraway France to
married Dauphin, later known as Louis XVI, in order to secure a diplomatic alliance through marriage
with France, a former enemy of Austria. Initially, Marie Antoinette had charmed the French people
with her delicate looks; however, as she became the queen, slanderous accusations piled continuously
which eventually damaged her reputation and led to her death. Why the French people hated Marie
Antoinette so much and what are the sinful things she did in order to earn their wrath? From the
existing pamphlets published before the French Revolution up to Coppola s film Marie Antoinette, the
press demonized the once adored lady into a highly lascivious whore. Marie Antoinette s sexual abuse
were caused by the public perception as a sexualized body, a hidden fear towards all publicly active
women and the potential power of their bodies, in which they use their sexual advantages toward men
to gain an access to political power. First, the queen was an unwelcome guest in French people s eyes.

Essay about Reconstruction in the Post-Civil War Era
After the Civil War, the South lay in ruins. Streets were lined with the lifeless bodies of Confederate
soldiers whilst the buildings smoldered right down to their foundations. In an effort to restore the
South to its former charm, the U.S. government plunged the country into what is now called the
Reconstruction Era. President Lincoln s approach towards reconstruction, known as the 10% Plan,
was rivaled by the collaborative effort of Henry Davis and Benjamin Wade; known as the Wade Davis
Bill. Both plans never made it into effect, but they set a precedent for more rivalries to come.

Feeding into the obvious prejudice of African Americans through President Johnson, the southern state
legislatures implemented the Black Codes. These restrictions severely limited the freedoms of African
Americans. In retaliation, Congress passed the Civil Acts Rights Act which stated that all people born
in the U.S. are citizens; and this included African Americans. Johnson initially vetoed this bill, but
Congress overrode it. This is just one example of Johnson s many disagreements with Congress. At
that time, Congress also passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, which abolished slavery, made
everyone equal under the law, and gave African Americans the right to vote; which angered southern
farmers and former slave owners. President Andrew Johnson was angered at the feat of Congress, so
he decided to fire his Secretary of War, Edward Stanton. This went against the Tenure of Office Act,
thus giving the Senate grounds for impeachment. Although acquitted, Johnson spent the rest of his
term relatively mild mannered, rather than vetoing any and every bill passed by Congress. Angered at
the fact that African Americans now had the right to vote, southern white farmers banded together to
create the Ku Klux Klan. Their sole mission was to create fear in the lives of many African Americans
as well as stop them from expressing their newly acquired rights. The Ku Klux Klan became
somewhat of a form of domestic terrorism. In

A Wall Of Fire Rising
A Wall of Fire Rising , Slavery vs. Freedom. Being a story from a short story novel title Krik? Krak!
Written by Edwidge Danticat, A Wall of Fire Rising in brief is about Guy, Lili, and their son Little
Guy, a Haitian family living in poverty, with Guy been an unemployed sugar cane worker that escape
the misery of the quotidian life by stealing an air balloon from which he hurt himself, choosing a
scaring death over the misery of life beneath (Abbott 11). In further, the story also drives our intention
on Little Guy, especially about his role in a play as Haitian revolutionary Duty Boukman (who play a
vast role in the abolition of slavery in Haiti that led to their Independence). Thus, to not forget his
lines from the play, we see him reciting them throughout the story. Additionally, Danticat shows the
characters, Lili and Guy have a conflict over their son Little Guy been on a sugar mill permanent hire
list. Edwidge Danticat illustration of these events could be interpreted as a symbol of Slavery and
Freedom, that connects the past historical time, in which Boukman live in, as well of the present one
lived by Guy, Lili, and Little Guy in the story. To begin, it can be confirmed that Duty Boukman was
mentioned in A Wall of Fire Rising , with being a role Little Guy must play in his upcoming school
performance. This is shown when Guy asks Little Guy about his role in the play, and as seen on line
10, Little Guy responds, I m Boukman (Danticat 227). Knowing that, the question now is why does
Danticat introduce someone from Haiti history in a story that supposes to be about a family struggling
with poverty to maintain their daily needs? Foremost, let know who Boukman is. Briefly, he was a
revolutionary, a slave and reputed voodoo priest, who with his powerful spoken words of freedom, in
defiance of the French colonizers, help to spark a revolution that ultimately led to the abolition of
slavery and the founding of the Haitian Republic in 1804 (Chen 4). In addition, before the revolt, most
of the slaves in Haiti were more used to work in the French sugar plantation. Just as mentioned in the
Globe and Mail article titled Krik? Krak! By Elizabeth Abbott, in which she wrote that: When

Phileo And Me Reflection
The concept I chose to critically reflect on is Compassion and Caring and the aesthetic piece that I will
be using is a video. My film is about the daily routine with my dog, Phileo, and how our relationship
with each other resembles this concept. In this paper, I will define and analyze Compassion and Care
and it s significance to my video called, Phileo Me . Compassion is more than just relieving a patient s
suffering but is an essence to enter a patient s experience and therefore helps to achieve the best
optimal holistic care (Von Dietze Orb, 2000). According to Dewar (2011) in her statement during the
2010 Royal College of Nursing Conference, compassion is how we can relate to our patients, which

food he will refuse to eat, essentially, getting to know Phileo while giving him time. Being in another
person s shoes implies empathy and the ability to practice this trait in our professions will improve
compassionate care (Bramley Matiti, 2014). In my film, it shows that studying does take a large
portion of my day and is stressful, but Phileo shows compassion by understanding my feelings, my
emotions, and my position as a student and keeps me company through it all. My expression in the
beginning of studying is downcast but after being supported and encouraged by Phileo, and is shown
in our facial expressions and even in the way I was hugging tightly (Rillera, 2017, 00:00:33). Along

The Modern City of Paris
In this essay, I intend to look at Question 1, The Modern City 1, Paris. I have decided to choose and
examine Maison de Verre (1928 32) by architect, Pierre Chareau which is situated in Rue Saint
Guillaume, Paris. Maison de Verre, also known as House of Glass was built in the era of Modern
Movement and of course, it somehow has a strong relation with the early modernist issues materially,
structurally and spatially. I will first explore how the house relates to the industrialisation issue in
general but to be specific how Chareau s interest and decision to use certain materials like steel really
brought forward the sense of the industrial design of the house. Then, I will talk about the relation of
the house with the issue of mechanisation and how successful Chareau was in portraying a set of
machines to live in with amazing planning since the very beginning. His concept of mobility in most
of the mechanical designs really captured my interest. Last but not least, I will discuss the issue of
hygiene in this house as I think that it is somehow a response to the spread of diseases in the twentieth
century and people started to think more about the idea of cleanliness. At the end of this essay, I will
conclude it with a summary of the three modernist issues which will be discussed later and the
influence of Maison de Verre on the following architects generation.
As mentioned earlier, industrialisation is one of the early modernist issues which relates significantly

Nora A Hero
A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or
noble qualities. A Doll s House , authored by Henrik Ibsen, contains a protagonist that fits this
definition. The protagonist, Nora Helmer, represents courage as the character rightfully decides to
relieve herself from the traditional social commitments and obligations, thus becoming an independent
individual. In addition, Nora displays selflessness through removing herself from the family as it is
realized the young woman is an inadequate mother. Moreover, Ibsen sets Nora in a world of
predetermined social constraints that lead the young woman to become deprived of freedom and
genuine happiness. Subjugation and oppression act as significant ... Show more content on

As Nora comes to realize that her marriage to Torvald has been loveless and the young woman has
only been fulfilling the traditional role of a dull housewife, Nora becomes overwhelmed as the woman
accepts the lack of knowledge in being a genuine wife and mother, The way I am now, I m no wife for
you (1774). Moreover, Nora decides to leave her children with Torvald as the woman laments not
knowing how to take care of the three children, I won t look in on the children. I know they re in
better hands than mine (1774). While the act of abandoning one s own family may come across as
selfish, this is quite the opposite in Nora Helmer s instance. Norma accepts she is an inadequate
mother and would be unable to care for the children without any aid from others, The way I am now, I
m no use to them (1774). This inadequacy is further brought to light by Torvald as he exclaims that
Nora is not to be trusted with the job of bringing up the couple s children. Additionally, Nora proves
the selflessness of her character as the woman explains she must seek an education before trying to
educate her own children, I m not up to the job. There s another job I have to do first. I have to try to
educate myself (1772). In order to become the adequate mother that her children need to be
appropriately raised, Nora must seek enlightenment without the influence of Torvald, You can t

The Use Of Alternative Energy Sources
Alternative energy sources can be implemented for house and car factories and any other facility you
can imagine. The common known alternative energy sources are Hydroelectric Energy, Solar Energy,
and Wind Energy. The potential energy stored in hydroelectric energy that is driving into a dam of
water to make water turbines and generators. The energy that the earth receives from the sun is solar
energy. Human civilization has started realizing how much harm they have already caused to the
environment. Alternative Energy Sources helped people maintain balance of the nature without
causing harm to conventional energy sources. Solar energy is a renewable form of energy will not
deplete until thousands of years. It s solar power to a generation is very clean. Wind Energy is an
effective alternative sources of energy in places where the velocity of the wind is high but is a very
clean form of energy. But the wind is a renewable source of energy therefore it wouldn t make a big
problem. The new alternative energy source is apart from commonly knowing that there have been
recent advancements discovering to add of to the list of old alternative sources. Challenges by using
the alternative energy sources are promised as the use of alternative sources of energy is under
research to how to tap energy from other resources. Although the small powers of generation systems

Financing The Failing U.s. Healthcare System
Financing the Failing U.S. Healthcare System
The three principle parties involved in the U.S. Healthcare system are the consumer, provider and
insurer. The provider includes the hospitals, clinics, doctors, nurses and pharmacies that provides a
service; the consumer is the individual who receives the medical service and supplies the money; and
the insurer is a third party intermediary between the provider and the consumer which accept money
from a pool of consumers and reimburse the providers. Like any transaction, there is a certain degree
of risk associated for members of the different parties. This risk is based upon variables within the
U.S. healthcare model including the method of, and who is reimbursing the providers.
The method of reimbursement determines which party will bear the greater financial risk and can lead
to an excess supply of medical services that drive up prices and provide no additional benefit to
individual consumers because of producer and consumer moral hazard. To maintain a sound
healthcare market government regulation is required in the current U.S. healthcare system because it
would otherwise fail.
The following paragraphs will discuss the methods and effects of reimbursement in the U.S.
healthcare system, which party bears the financial burden, issues of moral hazard and cost control
mechanisms, and the role of government regulation in the healthcare market.
Fixed payments are pre determined amounts that providers receive regardless of the

St. Basil Of Caesare The Origins Of Monasticism
Monastic Rules
Monasticism is a way of life of inner and is considered liberation from material things. It means
denying one s self of worldly possessions, to live a humble, set apart life and being totally devoted to
the study of scripture and spiritual matters. Many base the Monastic life on the 1 John 2:15 17 which
states, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him. For all that is in the world the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and
pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its
desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever (ESV).

People were becoming Christians at a rapid pace; some church communities started to show signs of
not being strict with guidelines and regulations. The Monks were respected among the people and we

education and the Bible. During the early and middle years, one of the institutions that remained stable
was the church and monasticism was important to its stability.
The most important monk of early medieval Christianity was St. Benedict. In 529 he wrote a rule for
his monastery that would become the rule for almost all monasteries of early medieval Christianity. It
emphasized physical labor and involved vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Benedictine
Order of monks is still in existence today. Monasteries were indeed the centers of learning in the
medieval period.
St Benedict made the decision that he would be able to a benefit to other monks. He founded twelve
monasteries with twelve monks in each. Some of them were not happy and resented him for the
stricter rules imposed. Others felt that Benedict had powers not typically a characteristic of an
ordinary person. His sister was responsible for the formation of a covenant which became the

In chapter 16: Salim leaves with Latika. We see Salim barge into the room where Jamal and Latika lie
innocently talking. There is a high angle shot making Latika and Jamal look weak and vulnerable.
This cuts to a low angle of Salim making him seem strong and powerful. Salim continues to say I am
the elder, I am the boss, for once you do as I say. This shows that Salim believes he is the dominant
brother and Jamal must obey him. The scene concludes with Salim raping Latika after Jamal is forced
away at gunpoint by his own brother. This is where we see the darker side of Salim s character and the
contrast between the innocence of Jamal and the narrow mind of Salim. This impacts on the audience
because it is the first time that there has been serious conflict between the brothers. It also aids the
audience into categorizing Salim into the villain character at this point in the film. At the end of the
film Salim makes the ultimate sacrifice; his life. This emphasizes the dramatic change that has
occurred in Salim s character. Salim transforms from being the antagonist to being the enabler, aiding
Jamal in finding Latika. In chapter 23: Salim helps Latika escape. We see Latika watching the news
about Jamal being on his final question, with tears rushing down her cheeks. Salim enters. We see a
high angle of Latika reiterating her vulnerability this shadows chapter 16 (when Latika was in the
same position).

point he doubts himself as a decent human being and is clouded with guilt from reoccurring thoughts .
I believe Gregory Orr s incident causes a dramatic negative emotion and guilt that makes any possible

Workout Analysis
Practice the next few days were rough. I wanted to work extra hard so I wouldn t be disappointed in
my next performance. As a team, we worked out Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week all we
did was stretch and warm up in preparation for the meet over the weekend. I did a lot of extra lifting
after practice and a lot of work to get more flexible in hopes that will make me faster. My coach once
told me before that being flexible increases your speed and makes you more mobile. I would do these
drills that you would hop over a hurdle and then go under them stretching your hip flexor muscle.
After these drills, I would use resistive bands to stretch the muscles in my legs and in my hip. I would
hope after all this extra work I would see a big difference.
On Monday, we did a workout to increase our endurance. It was 3 by 400 meters at 60 pace with a 4
minute rest in between each one. This workout was hard because I didn t realize how difficult running

  • 4. The Muscular Dystrophy Was First Discovered By Guillaume... Duchenne muscular dystrophy was first discovered by Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne in the 1860 s, but due to lack of medical knowledge little was known until the 1980 s. It was in 1986 that researchers that were supported by the MDA, muscular dystrophy association, identified the particular X chromosome that leads to DMD, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dystrophin is the protein that is associated with the gene and was named in 1987.The DMD gene is the second largest gene to date, and it produces dystrophin.(Genome, 2013) Lack of the protein Dystrophin in the muscle cells causes them to weaken and become fragile. (MDA, 2015). DMD is an inherited disorder, but there are rare cases where it can spontaneously appear in a child with no previous family history due to a random mutation in moms X chromosome. DMD is a gender specific disease that only appears in males. Females are carriers in their X Chromosome and they have the chance of passing the disease on to their children, 50 50 to a girl and 50 50 to a boy. If the girl does receive the gene she becomes a carrier. If the boy gets the gene then he has the disease. Males do not pass on the gene to their children because they pass on the Y chromosome and the disease is X specific. Some female carriers have indicators of being a carrier by having symptoms of cardiomyopathy, shortness of breath during exercise, and muscle weakness in the back, arms, and legs. There have been very rare instances where a girl has not received a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Ethical Dilemma Of Performance Enhancing Drugs Benchmark Assignment: Ethical Dilemmas These days it seems as society is constantly being faced with Ethical Dilemmas. Whether it is normal everyday citizens, actors, business executives, and even athletes. The way that every person deal with ethical dilemmas is by relying on their worldview. The world of professional sports is a very tough and competitive place. It is full of top level athletes that are masters in their respective sports and the struggle that they all face is to be better than everyone else. With all these athletes working hard and looking for new ways to better themselves, some take the easy way over the right way. In this paper, the ethical dilemma of performance enhancing drugs being used in sports will be addressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Core Beliefs Some athletes view doping, the use of performance enhancing drugs, as the only way to keep up with athletic competition (Performance Enhancing Drugs, 2017). With it being such a big issue many people are curious on how the Christian worldview deals with the topic. The Christian worldview does not specifically address the ethical dilemma that surrounds performance enhancing drugs. While I admit that it does not directly talk about PEDs, in Jesus time they had none, there are certain core beliefs that can be applied to it. Firstly, we need to look at our bodies. People aligned with the Christian worldview know that because of the fall our bodies were marred from God s beginning perfect creation of us (The Ethics of Enhancement, 2017). The Bible states how God views our body saying Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God s (NKJV, 1 Corinthians. 6:19 20). If our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, then it would not be right to defile our bodies by injecting it with drugs for performance. It is also trying to change and determine what and how our bodies are rather than how God created us. There is also the issue of performance enhancing drugs being fair and considered cheating. King Solomon writes that Better is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Role Of Overgrazing In The Great Plains Natalie, I enjoyed reading your post and about the overgrazing in the Great Plains. Over grazing was growing so rapidly in the 1800 s and later in that century caused the public rangelands to become severely depleted and overcrowded (U.S Department of the Interior, 2015). The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) reports that after the implementation of the Taylor Grazing Act (TGA) of 1934 there was a significant decrease in grazing livestock on public lands by ranchers, decrease in livestock population, and increased operation sustainability and stability (U.S Department of the Interior, 2015). As a result, between ranchers cattle, sheep and horses, sustainable grass is scarce and can hardly support a variety of herds. (Rayburn, 2000). In contrast, journalist Robin Walters and Sebastian Tsocanos report that there are not many overgrazed pastures at all (Rediscover The Prairie, 2014). In addition, they find that it is not a bad thing for a few herds to be around. Moreover, they express a lack or worry for overgrazing creating another situation similar to the one during the 1800 s that was widely considered a Dust Bowl (Rediscover The Prairie, 2014). In addition to the current limitations on land for the vast majority of ranchers, there is now a careful thought taken into account for future generations which prevents some ranchers to not be excessive like ... The tall lifeless trees with bare broken limbs surround a lady with a babushka, black coat, and leather gloves. The lady is looking down. Her emotionless face shows of a lady that has been suffering for a lifetime. The younger lady next to her is a nun wearing a religious habit looking down and away. Her face shows of sorrow as well. She looks as if she is praying and wondering how the world could be so cruel. The trees are skinny and tall that tell a true story. The trees show the hatred, sorrow, poverty, and hardships of the past. It s an eerie forest that looks as if it s from a fictional movie such as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Assignment 1 Critical Thinking Assignment Critical Thinking Assignment 1 Shaylynn Cote The main point of this paragraph is to describe that silencing the expression of opinion is a peculiar evil that is robbing the human race. This argument is written from the perspective of the authors opposition, this is shown by the statement the objection likely to be made to this argument would probably take some such form as the following . The main point being We may, and must, assume our opinion to be true for the guidance of our own conduct: . Complete liberty of contradicting and disproving our opinion is the very condition which justifies us in assuming it s truth for purposes of action; and on no other terms can a being with human faculties have any rational assurance of being right is the main point as it acts as a rebuttal to the previous paragraph fulfilling the purpose of this passage. Using the statement I, answer is a major indicator the opinion stated in this paragraph is that of the author.. The steady habit of correcting and completing his own opinion by collating it with those of others, so far from causing doubt and hesitation in carrying it into practice, is the only stable foundation for a just reliance on it; (from the seventh paragraph) is an example of an intellectual virtue. The man performs a habit of opening up his work to criticism as well as comparing his work to that of others in order to find inconsistency. • 12. Synthesis Essay On Huckleberry Finn Huck Finn Synthesis Essay: The Great Race Debate Slavery stretches its cruel branches into decades of history. According to the American Anti slavery and Civil Rights Timeline on Ushistory.org, the portuguese were the first to negotiate a slave trade in 1472. The portuguese slave trade agreement also included ivory and gold as well as slaves. In 1610, the first ship carrying slaves touched down in the new world. Four years after that the British Colony of Massachusetts became the first colony to recognize slavery as a legal institution. For as long as slavery has been a legal institution abolitionists have been advocating for the freedom and rights of slaves. In 1671 George Fox, the founder of the quakers, talked out against the institution of slavery in the new world. In 1861 America ripped itself apart fighting a war, known as the American Civil War, that would ultimately abolish slavery in the United States of America. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was written and published after the end of the civil war, but is set forty to fifty years before the beginning of the civil war. At this time it was socially acceptable to own slaves, especially in the south where Huckleberry Finn lives. It was not uncommon for slaves to be beaten or whipped if their work was unsatisfactory. Slaves were treated as people without rights and property to their white owners. Today the transatlantic slave trade has left its mark on America. There are still white supremacist groups, like the KKK, who believe that they are the superior race and black people should be eradicated. Racial profiling of black people has been an increasing issue to. Black people are getting killed and sent to jail for crimes that if a white person were to commit, the white person would receive a lesser sentence. Today racism is still running rampant in America. Many schools have banned teachers from teaching on Twain s Huckleberry Finn for various reasons. One of those reasons is that Twain uses the word nigger, and he uses it to many times. At the time that this book was written, slaves and free black people were called niggers. So Twain in his writing is being politically correct when writing about Jim and the other slaves ... • 13. Analysis Of The Man From Snowy River By Banjo Paterson The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson 1. Andrew Barton Paterson, more commonly known as Banjo Paterson, was a famous Australian poet who was born on the 17th February, 1863. He spent his early life at a farm near Yass, in between Melbourne and Sydney. His early education came from a governess, but as soon as he was able to ride a pony by himself, he was taught at a school in Binalong. At 11, Paterson went to Sydney Grammar School whilst his family was living in Gladesville. He left SCS at 16 after failing an examination. From 1885, he started having poetry published in Australian magazine, The Bulletin, where he first coined the pseudonym Banjo , the name of his favourite horse. In 1899, Paterson became a war correspondent for multiple newspapers, but in 1908, he decided to take a break from journalism writing and focus more on his poetry. In WWI, Paterson served as an ambulance driver and returned to Australia in 1919. His third collection of poetry, Saltbush Bill JP, was published soon after. Paterson died of a heart attack in 1941, just 12 days before his 77th birthday. 2. The Man from Snowy River tells the story of a horse that escapes from a ranch. The owner offers a lot of money to capture the prized possession and so many drovers set off to capture the horse. The drovers pursue the horse across the country, but are defeated by the rough terrain. Then the Man from Snowy River steps up and charges down the slope. He is lost to view by the rest of the group, but reappears later, tired and battered, with the horse trailing behind him. 3. The Man from Snowy River holds plenty of language devices that help capture the mood and setting of the poem. The old man with his hair as white as snow makes use of simile to help describe one of the men on a horse. The simile makes the line more interesting and less monotonous by showing what he looks like rather than straight out telling. The man is made out to be strong and fierce but the similarity of his hair and snow juxtaposes this power as snow is thought to be delicate and beautiful. Another technique is the metaphor And the stock horse snuffs the battle with delight. This hints that the drovers must be prepared for the dangerous job ahead of them, if ... • 14. The Middle Of The 19th Century Introduction The middle of the 19th century, it was thought to be an unexceptional practice if a company s purchase of its own shares back. However, the point of view against the continued existence of the power began to grow in force after the advancement of the model of limited liability. The ruling out on share repurchases was as a final point added into the common law in Trevor v Whithworth. The prevention was afterward enacted in companies legislation in England and subsequently in the different Commonwealth countries, as well as Australia. The Act integrated two requirements of particular consideration to the Lords. Firstly, there was a condition that the company should give its nominal capital. Secondly, the legislation provided for an all inclusive practice for reducing capital and the assets of the company. It is an essential reason of corporate law that the share capital of a company should be maintained. Nonetheless, a corporation limited by shares is open to shrink its share capital by a ruling of its members provided that the decrease is not prohibited by its Bylaws and Memorandum of Association and the company act in accordance with the procedures set out in the Corporation Act 2001. The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where he takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way the Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word choice, tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the reader think that he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced. Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81, 2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... In this sentence Fletcher reassures the reader that the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this because he tells the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words, Fletcher lets the reader know that the man is imagining being with the Indian. Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience what it must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this writing. Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader what it must have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job of making the reader believe. The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. This verbal code often disconnects college students from people similar to their age due to the fact that much of the subjects to be spoken about are quite different. This is not to say that college students cannot communicate with non college students but they often find it easier to relate to those who understand their lingo, joys, struggles, and more. Natural and Sexual Selection of Vestigial and Wild Type Drosophila melanogaster Abstract In this experiment, vestigial flies as well as wild type flies were used to create some diversity as well as test one of our hypotheses. Our hypotheses are as follows; 1) The wild type flies will have a greater relative fitness compared to the vestigial flies based on only sexual selection. The wild type has a relative fitness of 1 since it has fully functional wings. Vestigial Winged flies are not as sexually appealing since their wings are not functional and the wing movement is a vital part of their mating ritual. 2) The vestigial fly will have a greater relative fitness when considering both sexual and natural selection. The bananas chosen to be an accelerant for the growth of the yeast and were frozen so they would be easier to cut. The yeast was used because the drosophila melanogaster prefer this as a food source. The vestigial and wild type flies were sexed (to determine their sex), sorted, and counted. An initial population size of 100 total flies was decided so that it would be easier to determine the phenotypic percentage of the total population. Fly paper was placed in one of the sets of cages to impose a method of natural selection as well as the sexual selection which is being solely tested by the other set of cages. It was decided that there would be 80 vestigial flies and 20 wild type flies to total to an initial population of 100 drosophila. Next, the flies were anesthetized flies using Fly Nap. This makes issuance of straight debt more expensive at around 5.75%, as the market will demand higher premium. Given the above market perception of risk and growth opportunity, issuing a convertible bond is appropriate because it would allow the company to raise capital at more advantageous terms than it would when it issues straight debt. Investors would be willing to supply funds at a lower rate if they can have the opportunity to benefit from the upside potential of the stock. Hence, the value of convertible bonds becomes insensitive to the risk of the company. Investors would not be materially affected if the company becomes more volatile as a result of added risk in the future because the call option value of the convertible bond will likewise increase. Upside returns due to increase in risk will also accrue to investors holding a convertible bond, while having a downside protection because of the part debt nature of the convertible. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essay 2 Hearing aids are small devices that have made a huge impact on the hearing impaired. There are four main parts that make up a hearing aid. First, there is the microphone; the microphone changes acoustic signals into electric signals. An omnidirectional microphone picks up noise coming from all directions, where as a directional microphone focuses on sound coming from a certain direction in order to improve the signal to noise ratio. The next main part is the amplifier. The amplifier increases the power of the converted signal where the receiver then converts the electric signals back to acoustic signals and sends it through the ear mold into the ear. The last part of the hearing aid is the battery. The battery is likely the most important part, as without the battery, the hearing aid would just act as a really large ear plug. Hearing aids are an important piece of technology as they help individuals with a hearing loss receive auditory input they might not otherwise hear. • 36. A Wall Of Fire Rising A Wall of Fire Rising , Slavery vs. Freedom. Being a story from a short story novel title Krik? Krak! Written by Edwidge Danticat, A Wall of Fire Rising in brief is about Guy, Lili, and their son Little Guy, a Haitian family living in poverty, with Guy been an unemployed sugar cane worker that escape the misery of the quotidian life by stealing an air balloon from which he hurt himself, choosing a scaring death over the misery of life beneath (Abbott 11). In further, the story also drives our intention on Little Guy, especially about his role in a play as Haitian revolutionary Duty Boukman (who play a vast role in the abolition of slavery in Haiti that led to their Independence). Thus, to not forget his lines from the play, we see him reciting them throughout the story. Additionally, Danticat shows the characters, Lili and Guy have a conflict over their son Little Guy been on a sugar mill permanent hire list. Edwidge Danticat illustration of these events could be interpreted as a symbol of Slavery and Freedom, that connects the past historical time, in which Boukman live in, as well of the present one lived by Guy, Lili, and Little Guy in the story. To begin, it can be confirmed that Duty Boukman was mentioned in A Wall of Fire Rising , with being a role Little Guy must play in his upcoming school performance. This is shown when Guy asks Little Guy about his role in the play, and as seen on line 10, Little Guy responds, I m Boukman (Danticat 227). Knowing that, the question now is why does Danticat introduce someone from Haiti history in a story that supposes to be about a family struggling with poverty to maintain their daily needs? Foremost, let know who Boukman is. Briefly, he was a revolutionary, a slave and reputed voodoo priest, who with his powerful spoken words of freedom, in defiance of the French colonizers, help to spark a revolution that ultimately led to the abolition of slavery and the founding of the Haitian Republic in 1804 (Chen 4). In addition, before the revolt, most of the slaves in Haiti were more used to work in the French sugar plantation. Just as mentioned in the Globe and Mail article titled Krik? Krak! I have decided to choose and examine Maison de Verre (1928 32) by architect, Pierre Chareau which is situated in Rue Saint Guillaume, Paris. Maison de Verre, also known as House of Glass was built in the era of Modern Movement and of course, it somehow has a strong relation with the early modernist issues materially, structurally and spatially. I will first explore how the house relates to the industrialisation issue in general but to be specific how Chareau s interest and decision to use certain materials like steel really brought forward the sense of the industrial design of the house. Then, I will talk about the relation of the house with the issue of mechanisation and how successful Chareau was in portraying a set of machines to live in with amazing planning since the very beginning. His concept of mobility in most of the mechanical designs really captured my interest. Last but not least, I will discuss the issue of hygiene in this house as I think that it is somehow a response to the spread of diseases in the twentieth century and people started to think more about the idea of cleanliness. At the end of this essay, I will conclude it with a summary of the three modernist issues which will be discussed later and the influence of Maison de Verre on the following architects generation. Healthcare System Financing the Failing U.S. Healthcare System The three principle parties involved in the U.S. Healthcare system are the consumer, provider and insurer.
