Fq3 Unit 3 Research Paper
FQ3: How does social media change the way people eat?
Most of the foods on social media are advertise by fast food restaurants, which are unhealthy foods.
The survey result shows that 65% of the respondents believe that foods on social media are unhealthy
as shown in figure 8. Fast food advertising is most likely be called junk food advertising (Herron,
2014). According to research, University of Sydney reveals that junk food engages young Facebook
users to promote unhealthy food which can result to obesity and lifestyle diseases (The University of
Sydney, 2014) (Lee, 2014). Research says advertising promotes unhealthy habits, affect children s
preference and urging them to eat salty, sugary and greasy foods (Herron, 2014). For instance, fast
food restaurants offer chips and drink to answer a survey about their restaurant. In figure 9, 92% of the
respondents buy fast food because of advertisements and promotion. Social advertisements affect the
way people eat since it encourages people to eat unhealthy food using voucher and answering surveys
for a free food. Consumption of unhealthy foods has greatly increased through the years. According to

Social media has greatly influenced people in terms of food choices. Some people eat fast food instead
of cooking healthy food at home since it is easier to buy than to cook (Herron, 2014). Some food on
fast food contains all the calories people need for the day (Fast Food , 2015). About 40% of the
respondents eat fast food a few time a week, which could means, that social media is one of influence
on food choices for people (Andal, Social Media Advertising, 2017). Social media changes people
way of thinking about fast food through those pleasant food visuals. Social media advertisements
increased portion sizes significantly that cause people to eat more unhealthy food (Herron, 2014).

The Causes And Cures Of Schizophrenia
The causes, cures and intellectual comprehension in schizophrenia patients remains unknown.
Scientists have discovered that schizophrenia is a severe condition that develops by a combination of
biological, environmental, and unforeseen factors. Since this condition effects no more than two
percent of the population, it is challenging to find an adequate sample size for assessments and further
study. People suffering from schizophrenia are incapable of determining reality and show a wide array
of symptoms varying from delusions, hallucinations, irrational conduct and disorganized speech. The
complex severity of these symptoms make it difficult for scientists to find a remedy that works for all
patients. Recent studies have shown that identical twins have an increased risk of developing the
condition. The risk is increased by half in comparison to individuals who do not carry twin genetics.
Many wonder if schizophrenia is caused by a physical abnormality inside the brain, but it has not been
scientifically proven yet. Since twins are at the highest at risk for schizophrenia, it is essential to study
the behaviors, patterns and recovery methods of these patients.
A study conducted by Michael Harms suggests that one of the causes of Schizophrenia is determined
by the structure of the thalamus and a reduction in volume of the hippocampus. In the current study,
we assessed the volume and shape of the thalamus in subjects with schizophrenia and their
nonpsychotic siblings. The

King Philip Regime and Government in Paris 1200 by John W....
King Philip Regime and Government In the novel, Paris 1200 by John W. Baldwin, King Philip
(Philip Augustus), was an important contributor to the growth of the French Monarchy. He was able to
increase the Monarchy better then any other King before him. He defeated many enemies, sought to
overtake the British crown and embarked on a third crusade. King Philip Augustus brought financial
stability to the country and was very popular amongst his subjects. King Philip when assigned King
had many goals to achieve to make his Kingdom the most powerful. He changed the political structure
to better suit these goals and allow for a better transition with his changes. King Philip Augustus had
different relationships, good and bad, with the Catholic Church, the Parisian Elite and England. Philip
II, starting at such a young age, had high expectations for the development of the Kingdom. Philip
Augustus was the late son of King Louis VII and it was a miracle that King Louis VII could bear a son
so late in his regime. His birth at Paris on 21 August 1165 was the occasion of exceptional rejoicing
for his parents, and for the Parisian population because it brought long years of anxiety to a close
(Baldwin 71). The country finally felt secure knowing there was a male hair in line to rule the
Kingdom. King Philip was the son of Louis VII and Alix de Champagne. He was born in Paris and
spent as much time as possible in the capital area. His father planned to associate Philip with him on

For This Project, I Worked With Brandon Bowers To Begin
For this project, I worked with Brandon Bowers to begin a donation food drive for the local domestic
violence and sexual assault shelter in Murfreesboro, the Bernard House. We discussed the project and
picked the Bernard House in late March. When I called, they said that they always needed
nonperishable food items, and there was a list of items they were asking for during an Easter food
drive that we used in our flyers. On April 5th, I got in contact with a local grocery store and picked up
boxes for us to put all of the nonperishable food in. On April 9th, I decorated all of the boxes and
made them visible and more appealing, in hopes that more people would donate, with a flyer that
Brandon made placed on each of them. Brandon and I then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

So, when Brandon came to me with the idea of doing a donation drive, I thought it would be a good
way of helping women outside of volunteering at an organization. I wanted to do something with a
local group, and after seeing the Vagina Monologues this semester and hearing the monologues about
sexual assault and intimate partner violence, I thought that helping women who have been victims of
such violence would be very important work. I found the Bernard House, which is very close to
campus, and got in contact with them. This project has elicited a mix of happiness and frustration. It
made me really happy when people were receptive to what we were trying to do. Having professors
around campus be very supportive and encouraging when we asked to place boxes in their buildings,
as well as the student support we received as we passed out flyers, explained the project, and asked for
donations, was very rewarding. On occasion, students would tell us how much they appreciated our
project because it was for such a good cause, and many students donated money, which I was not
expecting because of the general lack of cash that college students carry around with them. I feel very
passionate about helping these women, and I want this donation drive to be very helpful for the
shelter. So, when people showed the same passion for the cause, it was very driving and affirming.
However, there were times when

Wellness Programs in the Workplace
Introduction
Over the last several decades, an epidemic of lifestyle diseases has developed in the United States. In
response, employers, in an attempt to increase productivity and decrease health insurance costs, have
created wellness programs to combat the growing trend of unhealthy living habits. This paper will
discuss the different components of a wellness program, explore a typical employer s overall wellness
strategy, and analyze incentives and trends in common wellness programs in America.
The frequency of unhealthy lifestyle choices such as inactivity, poor nutrition, tobacco use and alcohol
consumption are the driving factors of today s chronic diseases: diabetes, heart disease, and chronic
pulmonary conditions. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Studies in 2010 found that indirect costs (e.g., days missed at work) were approximately four times
higher for individuals with chronic disease than for those without.
Today, wellness programs focus on increased support for the chronic illnesses in the working age
population, as employers are concerned with their out of pocket expenses and the effects of employer
sponsored health coverage. In a recent survey by Towers Watson and the National Business Group on
Health (NBGH), 67 percent of employers identified employees poor health habits as one of their top
three challenges to maintaining affordable health coverage.
To help offset the increasing health care costs that our society faces today, employers are focusing
more on adopting good health practices through promotion and disease prevention strategies, often
referred to as workplace wellness program. Disease prevention programs have two stages of
prevention. The first is to prevent the onset of diseases or to diagnose, where the focus is on
addressing the health related behaviors and risk factor such as encouraging people to consume a
healthier diet. The second stage is to treat diseases at an early stage before complications occur. This
translates to promoting medication adherence for patients with asthma and other diseases

Mrs. Reed Interview
The information outlined below was obtained during an interview with Mrs. Reed, a separate
interview with her husband, and previous medical records. Mrs. Reed is a 27 year old, right handed
female with a previous diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder obtained in 2013. The triggering
event that led to the diagnosis was a strangulation attempt by a previous partner. Additionally, Mrs.
Reed grew up in a home with family violence. The patient reports difficulty sleeping, high levels of
anxiety, and problems with memory and concentration. Her husband reports that there will be days on
end in which his wife is unable to function and complete her daily tasks. Her husband additionally

Apart from these two main diagnosis , Mrs. Reed appears relatively healthy. Unless she can
incorporate more sleep and lower her stress levels, further cognitive deficits will most likely appear.
Caffeine should be excluded from her diet, as caffeine may increase her anxiety. Furthermore, Mrs.
Reed should focus on developing better sleep hygiene. She should work on a nightmare protocol with
her psychologist to decrease nightmares, avoid eating or exercising within several hours of bedtime,
and leave all electronic devices outside of the bedroom. It may also be beneficial to incorporate some
light stretching, yoga, or meditation before bed. By decreasing her sleep deficit, Mrs. Reed s cognitive
function will likely increase, especially in regards to concentration and memory. It may also be
beneficial to prioritize her work daily, in order to ensure completion of the most necessary tasks.
Furthermore, it is imperative to monitor her cardiac functioning as she has a high family history of
cardiovascular disease, and stress only exacerbates this condition more. A cardiologist, a psychologist,
and a psychiatrist should be met with on a regular basis to monitor her condition and watch for any
further decline. Given her relatively high levels of anxiety, Mrs. Reed may benefit from daily
meditation and continuous exercise. This evaluation can serve as a baseline for her neuropsychological
functioning, but further monitoring is recommended. Thank you very much for referring Mrs. Reed to

Islam And The Religious Beliefs Of Islam
Islam is an extremely pervasive and widely known religion that has greatly affected society and its
independent religious views. The Islam ideology and its numerous ideas rapidly and widely, and
quickly became a prevalent religion with significantly influential aspects and elements. For instance,
its focus on Allah, the Arabic word of God, as well as many other Islam spiritual aspects has taken
effect in many countries, and continues to influence many people as well as the religious ideas of other
spiritual paths. People gravitate towards the concept of how spiritual theory developed from a small,
insignificant community could have so rapidly become a renowned, crucial part of life for much of the
world s population. Retaining its emphasis on an uncompromising monotheism and a strict adherence
to certain essential religious practices,
Islam continues to influence society with its unique elements and divine inspired unity of mankind.
The numerous Islamic trade routes surrounding Mecca served as effective ways of spreading religious
Islam ideas through various routes and courses in which people could record
Islamic spiritual views. For example, in document A, main Islam areas such as Mecca and
Medina are in the center of many main countries and empires, such as the Byzantine Empire
Knight 2 and Persia. Because of Arabia s location, people could come to its Islamic areas by trade, and
see where Islam originated from as well as its diverse religious notions and intentions.

Compare And Contrast Blackboard Jungle And Rebel Without A...
Blackboard Jungle is about the challenges a new teacher, named Richard Dadier, faces in the midst of
an inner city all boys school. Mr. Dadier faces violence and anti social issues from his stubborn
students. Throughout the movie he tries to step outside of the normal school disciplinary actions,
which are not evident, and take action. In return, the students lash out. This starts to effect his home
life. Yet, in the end the students see Mr. Dadiers dedication, and even after a very eventful fight, they
resign to his authority.
Rebel without a Cause is about four teenagers: Jim Stark, Judy, John Crawford and Buzz. Jim Stark is

Both movies have adults who influence these teens, in Blackboard Jungle the adult is Mr. Dadier and
in Rebel without A Cause it is the juvenile division counselor named Ray Frarrek. Both movies
involve extreme violence and aggression between groups and cliques against one another.
The movies are different because Rebel without A Cause has a focus on family orientation with the
teens, whereas Blackboard Jungle does not. Rebel without A Cause is based upon the premise of
violence between family/groups, whereas Blackboard Jungle focuses on racial profiling. Blackboard
Jungle is told from the perspective of an adult verse Rebel without A Cause which is told directly from
the viewpoint of multiple teens.
Both movies have a strong focus on Rock and Roll. Rock and Roll was an important genre in the
1950s. Rock and Roll was thought to be the root of sexuality and aggression from teens at this time
(Altschuler, Glenn 2004). This is exactly how the teens acted in both movies, with anger and without a
care for consequence in many situations. The students showed anxiety, frustration, anger and grief; all

Why Did Napsster Use P2P Technology
The Napster web site made file swapping over the Internet available via the software necessary for the
Peer to Peer (P2P) file transfer to work. P2P is software that when downloaded onto someone s
computer, enables that person to access another person s computer to find and copy certain files that
the software is designed to recognize. It was used primarily for copying MP3 files, as a result avoiding
the need to actually purchase music on CD or some other format.
The popularity of Napster happened quickly with 15 million registered users in less than one year,
according to company sources. Napster had the attention of the Record Industry Association of
America (RIAA), and their concerns of Copyright infringement. About a year after its launch, it was
sued by the RIAA, which represented major recording companies such as Universal Music, BMG,
Sony Music, and Warner Music Group. They claimed that by allowing users to swap free music
recordings, Napster s service violated Copyright laws. Eventually, the judge ruled against Napster
forcing them to shut down operations and liquidate its assets [3].
Napster used P2P technology and the use of a central database that held registered users information.
The database contained information on the files they were sharing, their log in details and other
information. The database made it easy for users to find and download a specific piece of music.
It was the database that caused the courts to rule against Napster, not the

Barriers and Disparities in Health Care
Everyone should have the opportunity to achieve a healthy life and have comprehensive health care
services available to them. To achieve this healthy life, people need to have access to the health care
system and to a health care provider with whom they can develop a trusting relationship. However,
existing barriers to attaining health care services often lead to disparities which in turn lead to
differences in life expectancy, health status and a higher prevalence of certain chronic diseases
(HealthyPeople.gov, 2012).
Barriers
Barriers to health care can be defined as conditions that can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With the increasing immigrant population a third barrier affecting access to health care is a cultural
barrier. Culture barriers can include values and beliefs, language and race and ethnicity. Health beliefs
and behavior can become a barrier when patients decide not to seek medical treatment and instead turn
to home remedies and healers when treating illnesses. Approximately 10% of Americans speak a
language other than English and can be classified ad being limited in their proficiency. For these
patients language becomes a barrier and they are less likely to receive optimal medical treatment
(Flores, 2006). Horton and Johnson (2010) stress the importance of communication in reducing
disparities and increasing the trust of patients in the health care system. As reported by the American
College of Physicians, evidence reveals that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to receive
inferior care when compared with non minorities. This occurs even when minorities have access to
insurance and adequate income (Racial and ethnic disparities in health care, 2010).
Disparities
Barriers in health care can lead to disparities in meeting health needs and receiving appropriate care,
including preventive services and the prevention of unnecessary hospitalizations (HealthyPeople.gov,
2012). In their 2008 annual report, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality lists several
disparities in health care. They report that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States

Operation Eagle Claw
On 24 April 1980 s United States Special Operation forces , along with Joint Task Force 1 79 , led an
operation to save 52 American hostages trapped inside Tehran,Iran known as Operation Eagle Claw.
.The Operation was broken up into two phases. The first phase was to take place in Iran at a site called
Desert One. Desert One was an Airstrip for USAF special operations to use to land aircraft such as the
MC130, AC130H, and the RH53D. The MC130 was a fixed wing aircraft meant to transport ground
forces, the C130H was a gunship for security, and the RH53D was a mine sweeper and transported
ground forces. The RH53D was flown by United States Marine Corps aviators from the carrier USS
Nimitz. The plan was that these aircraft would fly under radar to Desert One, the men would offload at
the site, The Helicopters would refuel and be concealed at Desert Two. The next night the American
Forces would then extract the hostages, get to a soccer stadium where they would be picked up by
RH53D mine sweeping helicopters. The assaulting force would hit the compound with the security

artillery, planting soldiers in nearby towns to fool spies, creating fake radio broadcasts and many other

inflatable tanks, artillery and even inflatable soldiers. The ghost army s sonic division created sounds
that a real army division would make. Sounds included the movement of tanks, building a bridge and
the sound of gunfire. Since the Germans received a lot of their intelligence from radio broadcasts, the

This paper about Emancipation is no Proclamation. Do you agree with children being able to get
emancipated? Some agree with this action. Others, however, do not. We should be able to. Children
that want to get emancipated have their reasons for wanting to do so. Such as, they could ve been
involved in abusive actions at their house, some might want to get married young, or maybe they are
not getting supported by their loved ones or just not getting cared for at all. You never know some

with this as well because, after all a judge did state that your parents are not qualified to help you

Essay on Napoleon Bonaparte and the Catholic Church
Tension grew between the Catholic Church and France during the French Revolution, leading to a
schism, which deeply devastated the Church s economy. Pope Pius VII and Napoleon Bonaparte came
into power as the French Revolution was ending. For different reasons they both saw the importance
of restoring Roman Catholicism s position in France. The Catholic Church s initial support of
Napoleon greatly affected both parties (O Dwyer 12 14, 43, 49). This statement has led me to ask the
following question: To what extent did the support of Napoleon affect the Church s role as a political
and economic power in France? In this paper I will argue against the traditional view that Napoleon s

The loss of one of its great powers caused the Catholic Church great distress. Pope Pius VI, who ruled
during the Revolution, died and in 1799, Pope Pius VII was elected. Pius VII inherited many
problems, including the division between France and Rome.
Just as Pope Pius VII was coming into power, Napoleon Bonaparte, a young, military genius, was
elected as First Consul of the Post Revolutionary French government (O Dwyer 43, 49). Both
Napoleon and Pius VII saw the importance in ending the schism and restoring Catholicism in France.
Napoleon saw the reestablishment of the Catholic Church in France as a social bedrock and as an
ideological anodyne (Ellis 41) and used it to gain immediate political power. The Catholic Church
wanted influence in France again and was willing to strike a deal with Napoleon to do so. In 1801 they
officially published the Concordat, which restored Catholicism as the main religion in France (O
Dwyer 56). In 1802, Napoleon, without Pius consent, added an additional a list of police regulations
that severely restricted the Papacy s role in France (Ellis 41), known as the Organic Articles, which
aggravated Pope Pius VII. The Church s support of the Concordat legitimized Napoleon s autocratic
rule, but it also stopped the schism that the Revolution had started. From Napoleon s coronation in
1804 to the imprisonment of Pope Pius VII in Fontainebleau, the relationship

Nurse Practitioner As Theorist
Pamela Reed s Practitioner as Theorist describes the Nurse Practitioner as an untapped resource

Nursing theory development is a direct reflection of changing philosophies within science (Reed,

How Did The Cleons Punish The Mytilenes
The Mytileneans lacked trust in the Athenians so they started seeking support out of the alliance. They
turned to the Peloponnesians for support to leave the Athenian s. The Peloponnesians agreed but
couldn t provide much help since they were across the ocean. The Mytileneans took actions into their
own hands and started revolting. Word of the revolt got the Athenians and they were not happy. They
went to Mytilene and took every rebel that could be found. The oligarchic leaders of Mytilene were
taken by Athenian general, Paches. The Mytileneans asked that no one be killed until they were fairly

Flesh Market by Nicola Morgan
Fleshmarket
By Nicola Morgan
The theme of obsession is important in the novel Fleshmarket by Nicola Morgan.
Fleshmarket is set in Edinburgh in 1828. Two of the main characters are Robbie and Essie who are
brother and sister. They live in an awful, poverty stricken environment in the old town after everything
changed when their mother died at the hands of Doctor Robert Knox. Robbie Blames Knox for his
horrible life and suffering as he believes Knox has not suffered yet and he took away the good life
Robbie nearly had before Knox operated on his mum and this leads to his deep obsession with Knox.

Robbie is appalled when he breaks into surgeons square and finds some anatomy books and begins to
read them, each time he read the chilling description of an operation with its cold explanation of
gruesome techniques, his breath stuck in his throat and he wanted desperately not to read, but he could
not stop. His eyes were dragged along the lines. This tells us that Robbie thinks Knox and men like
him have no emotion or soul. Word choice (dragged) highlights Robbie s obsession with anatomy, as
if someone is making Robbie read the books.
Robbie s obsession leads him to spend a night in the Canongate Toolbooth as he gets caught in the
surgeon s library Robbie turned his face towards the wall and dragged his parched tongue against the
dripping stones. And as he drank he cried. This incident highlights how low Robbie has sunk; he is so
desperate that he is doing the same as a mad man.
While Robbie is in jail he is bewildered as to why he s let the obsession with Knox overcome him His
sense powerlessness was overwhelming. It rose in his chest and he screwed up his eyes against it.
What have I done? What has Doctor Knox made me become? This shows us that Robbie blames his
predicament on Knox when actually it is his own actions that have caused him to end up in jail he
feels once again that Knox has all the power.
Robbie goes to Joseph s house and feels he can talk to him about God what sort of Goes would take

The Effects Of Lead On Human Population
The effects of lead in the human population have been an issue since the early civilizations because
lead was found in almost every item used for eating and cooking. In the 1950 s, houses were built and
the first choice for plumbing pipes was made of lead. The paint used to cover the interiors was lead
based. Children s toys were also coated with lead based paint. Nowadays, lead can still be found in
some glassware; however, the government has banned the use of lead in the rest. Lead can be
introduced into the body through inhalation or skin contact. However, ingestion of lead is the most
common way of it being transported into the body. There are a few symptoms that are caused by lead
poisoning in the gastrointestinal tract: stomach pain, weight loss, decreased appetite, constipation,
diarrhea, unusual taste in the mouth, and a blue line around the gum line. The two problems that occur
with these symptoms are that they can be misconstrued as symptoms for other diseases, such as
appendicitis. These symptoms occur only when lead is at high concentration in the body. Being the
foremost pathway for intake, absorption in very dependent on the gastrointestinal lumen environment,
amount of iron in storage, and age (Rabinowitz, 1980). These variables can either increase or decrease
the absorption of lead. The gastrointestinal tract is a system of organs that are responsible for digesting

despite being warned of the dangers. His over confidence has made him fear nothing, not even nature
s toughest challenges. Before this crucial experience he was a cocky and confidence man, but in the
end he learned to not always trust his own thoughts. The crucial moment the man faces, is when he

because of his over confidence and his lack of experience with this type of weather. Other readers may

Swedish Vampire Films and Their Effect On Youth Essay
Vampire films are gaining popularity in many countries. The majority of these vampire films portray
one dimensional love or horror stories. Unlike other vampire films, Let the Right One In is a complex
film and novel that can be interpreted to reflect social problems in Sweden. The film and novel
illustrates a divide between young people and adults in Swedish society. These different age groups
are represented by different characters. The Swedish vampire, Eli, is not simply a monster, but she is a
complex character with which the audience can sympathize as she appears to be a twelve year old girl.

If there are no benefits left for other generations of Swedes, then the youth may face higher levels of
poverty. Eli s victims contrast the people Hakan murders because his victims are all young people.
Hakan exemplifies one of the dangers youth face. Although not fully portrayed in the film, Hakan is a
pedophile. In the novel, Hakan does take advantage of a young boy s desperate situation. The boy has
no money and must prostitute himself. The author may be directing attention to the problem of poor
youth that do not have the means to survive. This could be another example of the social welfare
system of Sweden benefitting the adults, while the children suffer. In addition to Hakan victimizing a
young boy, Hakan rapes Eli. While in Tommy s basement, Eli was being handled, like an object
(Lindquivst 392). However, Eli fights back and escapes from Hakan. Eli s escape represents that
Swedish youth face these sexual dangers and must fight off these dangerous adults. In addition to
Hakan sexually victimizing young kids, the people Hakan harvests blood from for Eli are young
people. First, Hakan kills a teenage boy in the woods. Then, he attempts to murder a boy at the pool,
but Hakan fails as the boy wakes up and screams for help. Perhaps the failed murder shows the
progression of youth in Sweden standing up to the oppression of dangerous adults. When young

JD Salinger Criticism
JD Salinger s Criticism on American Society During the 1950 s, America was prospering after the
second World War. According to History.com, The United States was the world s strongest military
power. Its economy was booming, and the fruits of this prosperity new cars, suburban houses and
other consumer goods were available to more people than ever before (History.com Staff). More jobs
were becoming available, decreasing the unemployment rate. Despite having all the success, America
faced many problems as a country. One of the most popular novels of the time, The Cather In The Rye
written by JD Salinger, discussed the flaws in the society Americans had failed to realize. The book is
about a journey of a teen named Holden Caufield who was expelled from his school for failing most
of his courses. He leaves to New York early but waits at a hotel until the winter break, hoping his
parents will not get as angry as they would. During his time in New York, he drinks alcohol heavily to
soothe his depression. Later, he was sent to a mental institution to treat his depression and as a therapy,
Holden writes about his adventure in New York. Throughout the novel, J.D. Salinger criticized many
aspects of American Society specifically conformity and the oppression of teenage freedom in the
1950 s. J.D. Salinger strongly opposed conformity within the American society. During the 1950s,
Americans were following these norms of behaving in the same way as one another. For example,

Pill Bugs And Crickets Lab Report
Abstract:
The purpose of this experiment was to measure the metabolic rate of pill bugs and crickets. I indirectly
measured the metabolic rate of each organism by calculating their respiration rates. In crickets, gas
exchange is accomplished via a tracheal system [Contreras, Bradley, 2010]. Pill bugs have pleopods,
gill like respiratory organs [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. My hypothesis was that the crickets will have a
faster respiration rate than the pill bugs. I used a respirometer to measure the oxygen consumption of
pill bugs and crickets. After plotting the data, I used the slope to obtain the respiration rate. The
respiration rate per gram of organism for the pill bugs was 0.0025 mL/min./g. The respiration rate per
gram of organism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pill bugs, Armadillidium vulgare, are terrestrial isopods [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Thus, they are not
very well adapted to land [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Water loss is a reoccurring theme because terrestrial
isopods lack cuticular lipids and the elaborate spiracular apparatus of insects [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008].
Most of the water loss is evaporation from the respiratory organs [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. The
respiratory organs are called pleopods, and are gill like organs located on the ventral abdominal
segments [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Interestingly, pill bugs are capable of conglobation, the ability to roll
up in a ball [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. In addition to protection from predation, conglobation may also
conserve water [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008].
In this experiment, I will be comparing the metabolic rates of two different species. Because they are
two different species, and differ in physiology, I will expect to see a difference in metabolic rate. More
specifically, I expect crickets to have a higher metabolic rate, due to their efficient respiratory system.
Materials and Methods:
The lab handout provided by the instructor was used as a guideline to conduct this experiment. The
only difference was the organism used and data collection period. For this experiment, pill bugs and
crickets were utilized. Also, data was collected for a period of 12 minutes.

Analysis Of Still Alice And The Notebook
Socioeconomic status is a defining factor in nearly every society around the world. Therefore, it is
unsurprising that the issues of class and stratification are manifest in many types of media, including
films. Like many nations, the United States operates under the class system. The sociologist Dalton
Conley defined the class system as, an economically based hierarchical system characterized by
cohesive, oppositional groups and somewhat loose social mobility (Conley 249). Still Alice and The
Notebook depict social stratification and the struggles between different socioeconomic classes. Still
Alice follows the life of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor at Columbia University, as she is
diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s and fights to retain her memories and relationships. The film
is set in modern day America, in which there is a stigma associated with dementia, there is a large
degree of gender inequality, and some careers are viewed as prestigious (e.g. doctors and lawyers)
while others are condemned by society (e.g. starving artists). The Notebook shares the story of Noah
Calhoun as he tries to revive the memories of his wife Allie, who suffers from dementia, by reading
her the story of their undying love. While Noah reads to Allie, the movie displays their life in the
1940s. During this time, America was facing World War II, segregation, and a highly stratified society
(U.S. Timeline, 1940 1949). When the movie shows elderly Noah and Allie, it takes place in

I Was Born For The Woods
I was born in the woods. Technically speaking, I was born at West Side Hospital in Nashville,
Tennessee, but brought home and raised in the woods. Five years before I arrived, my parents
purchased nine acres of land in Tennessee and built a house that backed into four hundred acres of
land. It was heavily covered in trees and brush a place where all of God s handiwork was still in its
original state. They cleared away just enough land for a house and a small yard; the rest belonged to
the wild.
From the time I could walk, the outdoors called to me. When the sun was up, I was outside exploring,
chasing wild animals, and discovering the world around me. My mom wouldn t see me until it was
time for lunch. As soon as I finished eating, I resumed my adventures until the sun disappeared.
During those excursions, I always had my older sister to accompany me. Quite often, it was just the
two of us. We didn t have a lot of friends at that time. Our family did live far away from everyone at
school, and the other parents were uncomfortable with having their children running wild in our vast
playground. Sadly, at the age of seven, we moved away from this beautiful wooden heaven to this flat
and unfamiliar city of concrete. I was initial shocked at how hard it was to make friends. Not only did
I not know how to play with other children, my strong country accent made me somewhat of an
outcast among them. In addition, I was behind the other children in learning since the schools in

language to acknowledge the meaningful theme of freedom. Different points are mentioned in each

The Pros And Cons Of Coffee
Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world and therefore is a popular commodity. More
than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed every day. Over 90% of coffee is produced in
developing countries, and millions of small producers income comes from growing coffee. Coffee is
produced and exported mostly from South American countries, while mainly industrialized countries
are the ones importing the most coffee. Worldwide, 25 million small producers rely on coffee for a
living, and in Brazil, over 5 million people are employed by the commodity. Brazil is the top country
in exporting coffee and is where almost a third of the whole world s production of coffee is. Coffee is
a more labor intensive work culture than other commodities like sugar cane or cattle because it is not
automated work and requires attention.
It is a major export commodity and was the top agricultural export for 12 countries in 2004. It was the
second most valuable commodity exported by developing countries from 1970 to 2000. World coffee
production predicted for 2017/18 is 159 million bags which is the same as the last year because lower
output in Brazil is offset by higher production in Vietnam, Mexico, and Indonesia and slight increases
in other countries. World exports of green coffee are expected to stay steady with 111 million bags.
Global consumption is estimated to be a record 158 million bags so ending inventories are expected to
decrease to 34 million bags after being higher the previous 5 years. The countries that exported the
highest dollar value worth of coffee during the year 2016 are Brazil, Vietnam, Columbia, Germany,
Switzerland, Italy, and Indonesia. Brazil accounted for 15.9% of total coffee exports, which was 5.2
billion dollars. Brazil s Arabica output is forecast to drop 5.1 million bags to 40.5 million. Coffee trees
in top growing regions in Brazil, Southern Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, have shown excellent
development and growers have intensified crop management, which are some of the reasons why
Brazil produces so much and exports coffee. There is also a lot of rainfall which has supported
development. Vietnam exported 4.7 billion dollars which was 10.5% of total world exports. Vietnam s

Nat Turner s Role In The Abolishment Of Slavery
Some people think his actions are crazy. Other suggest that his actions were rational and justified.
Whether or not you believe either of these, it is certain that Nat Turner was a revolutionary figure.
Nat Turner played a key role in the abolishment of slavery. He organized the most notable slave
uprising in modern history. Under his leadership, rebellious slaves killed over 50 white people in
August 1831. Although violence should not be condoned, the brutality of the massacre opened the
eyes of Virginians and citizens across America. The rebellion began to make people see the extent
slaves would go to in order to be freed from their confined lives.
Nat Turner s impact on human history was substantial. His initial goal of freeing his people of slavery
was not accomplished initially. However, his expression of fearlessness and determination was a key
point in the disintegration of slavery 34 years after his death. Ever since the attacks, Nat Turner and
his life history have been well documented. There are so many people that have been affected by Nat
Turner s life. People have been left with questions that cannot be answered about the rebellion. In
order to look for answers to Turner s controversial actions, we look toward the authors, producers, and
historians who have studied Nat Turner and his life.
Immediately after his capture, Nat Turner delivered his confessions to Thomas R. Gray. Gray wrote
down what Turner told him and published a pamphlet after Turner s death.

How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society
Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society
When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps,
computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great mind
that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented the alternating current,
induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote control,
radar, and even cell phones. So why don t we think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern society?
Because while Tesla s mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Although Tesla was a

The healthcare system of the United States was established as a system of health and welfare
programs created to provide affordable treatment to the citizens of the United States. Recently, the
Affordable Health Care Act was passed changing the structure of the system (Mulvany, 2012). While
in theory the new arrangement works, it has its flaws due to the resulting cost, slowness, and the
government interfering with religious and personal beliefs. These problems have led many people to
question the role of the government in the life of the individual.
The Supreme Court s favorable ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act allowed for healthcare to be
available for many Americans who would otherwise not receive medical benefits. This is because it
increases the number of people covered by Medicare/Medicaid, and lowers the cost of insurance
through employers. While this idea is good in theory, paying for it is a challenge due to the fact that it
will only add to the nation s already enormous debit of several trillion dollars (Mulvany, 2012). From
2010 2019, the United States is predicted to spend around 400 billion dollars on healthcare. This
prediction has prompted lawmakers to reduce spending on Medicare, Medicaid and other welfare
programs. The spending cuts will result in less people getting the care they need due to the limited
availability of money for care and the increase in the number of beneficiaries receiving

Gross Domestic Product ( Gdp ) Economic Statistics
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) economic statistics are one of the most closely watched stats
throughout each country. In the charts listed above, the nominal GDP is greater than real GDP in each
quarter of 2016 due to the nominal GDP reflecting current GDP at current price and real GDP
reflecting current GDP at past year prices. Also, the chart reflects that the nominal GDP was greater
than the real GDP for each quarter of 2016 due to the value of the nominal GDP sub categories
(personal consumption expenditures, gross private domestic investments, and government
consumption expenditures and gross investment) all being significantly higher than the same sub
categories listed under the real GDP. The nominal GDP reflects the prices that are ... Show more

Some differences between the two products are services or the market of goods that are produced for
that respective country s economy. However, the GNP does not include the annual foreign production
that is inherited by the domestic citizens, whereas the GDP does include the foreign productions that
are inherited by its domestic citizens. According to the table above, to determine the GNP and GDP
you will calculate the national product total from the national and personal income. National income is
the overall annual value of goods and services within a respective country economy. The chart shows
that in 2016, the GNP was $7,864.80 higher than the national income. National income is broken
down into ten categories (compensation of employees, rents, interest, proprietor s income, corporate
income taxes, dividends, undistributed corporate profits, indirect business taxes, consumption of fixed
capital and net foreign factor income). However, the employee compensation makes up the largest
portion of the national income. In my opinion, I believe this to be true, because the economy is valued
by its population and the services that are provided and goods that are sold. This can t happen without
having citizens gainfully employed, which in return will need to be compensated for the work they are
contributing to their economy. Part III. GDP in Different Countries Country Name Country Code

Best Features Of The Apple Watch
Best Features of the Apple Watch Introduction Innovation and ingenuity are pertinent to the success of
any modern piece of technology. Maintaining viability requires thinking outside the box and linking
usefulness with modernism; making it appeal to the target market. In an effort to maintain its claim in
today s modern marketplace, Apple Inc has released another novel innovation; The Apple Watch.
Unveiled in September 2014 with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, this newest piece of technology has
been dubbed the watch of the century. It s highly anticipated release promises competition for its
fashionable rival; the Moto 360 and reviews to date indicate it is expected to deliver. Its official
release is scheduled for early 2015 and will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a standard in Apple devices, there is seamless integration, which sees all your data being easily
distributed and accessed on your Apple watch as on other iOS devices. 3. Synchronizes This new
novelty beams messages and updates from the more popular social media sites such as Facebook. It
mitigates the need to regularly check other mobile devices for notifications as they come right to the
watch. 4. Compatibility The compatibility with the newer Apple devices means the iPhone or iPad can
remain concealed, whether in a bag or pocket and still be conveniently at hand through this device. 5.
Shape It has been designed with a classic rectangular design, softened out by the integration of
rounded edges, a single button and a knob. The placement of the button makes it an easy controller for
the device. 6. Time Keeping and More This new phenomenon will move beyond keeping excellent
time. It also maintains the time and dates that are pertinent in your life for each day e.g. Reminding
you of the anniversary dinner and your child s ballet recital. This again is done on the screen of the
watch, which reminds you without distracting you too much from any other activity that you may be
engaged in. 7. Time Detection The Apple Watch was designed to continually check and align its time
with the definite global time found in GPS satellites. It has the design capabilities to adjust for
daylight savings time without any adjustments by the consumer; it simply does the work for you. This

Just in Time
1. Executive Summary
This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the Just In Time system, the advantages and
disadvantages of the system and how it would benefit AG Z. The Just In Time (JIT) system is a
process where goods are ordered as required, as opposed to the currently used batch processing system
where goods are made in bulk and stored in warehouses until sold. The Just In Time system was
initially developed to not only cut down the amount of waste produced by other systems, which was
seen as incurring unnecessary costs rather than adding value to the company, but to also meet
customer demands with minimum delays. It has been found that when implemented correctly the JIT
system can benefit the company in numerous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In its simplest terms, the Kanban system is used to alert the production team exactly what needs to be
produced, the quantity required and the designated time frame (Horngren, George Srikant 1997).
5. Expected Results
The Batch Processing System currently used at AG Z is a system where products are produced in bulk
quantities or batches whether required by the customer or not. These goods are then stored in
warehouses until required. This process produces large amounts of waste in both inventory and
warehousing as the goods are not sold immediately, and could be required to be held for any length of
time.
The Just in Time system however is a process that produces necessary products as required. This
system is highly beneficial as it reduces the amount of inventory waste, as the goods are made to
order. It also reduces warehousing costs as the goods are made and shipped directly to the customer
rather than being held for extended periods at the warehouse.
As a result of these benefits, the JIT system has been particularly effective for companies with a high
customer demand on newly developed technologies such as computers. If the product is produced
when required and as specified by the customer, this not only allows the customer to order exactly
what they want with modern technology, but it also benefits the manufacturer who is guaranteed a
return on the goods straight

Emily Dickinson s Capitalization and Punctuation
The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson s poetry
stands out because of its unconventional use of capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain
capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of the
dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson s unconventional capitalization and
punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part of Dickinson s penmanship (Weisbuch 73). They
therefore edit Dickinson s poetry and publish them in standardized form. Others believe that the
capitalization and punctuation were a conscious effort on Dickinson s part. These scholars notice the
little nuances of Dickinson s dashes, such as whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Dickinson is not consistent in her capitalization (Porter 140). She does not capitalize every
single noun. As demonstrated above, the word light is not capitalized. Furthermore, Dickinson also
capitalizes words which are not nouns, as seen in lines 4 6 of He fumbles at your Soul . The word
ethereal is an adjective, but Dickinson chooses to capitalize it.
He stuns you by degrees Prepares your brittle Nature For the Ethereal Blow
The capitalized words are the key words of the poem. They add weight to the lines, tipping the balance
of the poetic rhythm. The reader is invited to ponder over their meaning and significance (Miller 59).
The capitalization gives Dickinson s poems concreteness and symbolism (Miller 58). The reader s
attention is drawn to these capitalized words. They form an image in the reader s mind. For example,
in the first example, the capitalized words are Slant, Winter, Afternoons, Heft, Cathedral, and Tunes.
These words alone evoke the image of a cold and lonely day which burdens the heart like the heavy
and mournful tones of an organ. Just words Winter Afternoons carry sensations of frigidness,
bleakness, and loneliness. Winter Afternoons set the scene and describe the mood (Porter 141). The
words Ethereal Blow strike the reader as an oxymoron. Ethereal implies something light, delicate, and

Essay about The Representation of Power in Cormier s The...
Inspired by the actions of his son, Robert Cormier decided to write this novel titled The Chocolate
War. Cormier s son Peter, had refused to sell chocolates at his school s annual sale as a matter of
principle (Kemp1), so Cormier thought that it would be an interesting plot for a book. In this book,
Robert Cormier introduces us to many characters that personify evil in order to try to control and
manipulate each other to gain power. The concept of power is represented in many different ways
throughout this novel. In this paper I will explain how power is represented in The Chocolate War, and
how it works. I will explain the different kinds of power that operate in the school. Also I will explain
whether the protagonist Jerry Renault ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter 3 we are reminded that The Chocolate War is also a coming of age novel. When Jerry looks
at the pornographic magazine, he is now beginning to want to know and understand the processes of
adolescent and adulthood. So he buys a magazine with the curiosity of what kind of satisfaction the
other kids were receiving by glaring at the images in the magazines. He is in that stage of wanting to
be accepted. Cormier made Jerry s character out to be an outcast, being the one that would always get
beaten up by the bully. Which proved to be correct when Emile Janza, the school s bully begins to
pick on him. Although Emile was the school s bully he too, respected the Vigils to a certain extent.
Archie was also a bully, but he bullied the minds of the other kids. He did not resort to physical abuse
but he indeed psychologically bullied people including Emile Janza.
Fear also played a factor throughout this story. Fear is what made the Goober go into Brother Eugene s
room and loosen all of the screws from the furniture. This brings us back to the psychological bullying
of Archie, because the Goober was mentally sick when he found out that the actions of his assignment
had made Brother Eugene sick. The other students were also frightened by the Vigils so they to carried
out any assignments that they were given. This story is written with a lot of hidden symbols and
meanings within the events that occur. Jerry also feared the Vigils at first but as the story

Drosophila Ausomal and Sex-Linked Cross Essay
Drosophila Autosomal and Sex Linked Cross The idea of the project was to experiment breeding
Drosophila Melanogaster (fruit fly) to figure out if certain genes of that species were sex linked or not
(autosomal). A mono hybrid cross and di hybrid cross was performed. For the mono hybrid cross,
white eyed female and red eyed male were placed in one vial for them to reproduce. For the di hybrid
cross, red eyed and normal winged flies and sepia eyed and vestigial winged flies were placed in their
vial to reproduce. In the mono hybrid cross the results expected were within a 1:1:1:1 ratio. Expected
results similar to the expected desired null hypothesis proposed with what the F1 parental generation
breeds. The potential results would have had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His second theory was the law of independent assortment which occurs in metaphase I. This theory
was construed based on the fact that a new phenotypic ratio occurred in the F2 generation with a di
hybrid cross (9:3:3:1). Here, alleles (genes) are expected to segregate independently from each other
(Cain, Urry, Reece, 2010). Thomas Hunt Morgan continued Mendel s work and in 1911, decided to
experiment on Drosophila melanogaster, also known as fruit fly. His study on them was due to the fact
that they had only 4 chromosomes which 3 were autosomal and 1 was a sex chromosome. His study
proved that eye color was sex linked (Cain, Urry, Reece, 2010). Other traits were not linked. Any
mutation can change the result of a mutated gene which would give variations. Such is the case in the
eyes of the fruit flies. The purpose of this experiment is to see if Mendel and Morgan both had valid
points. Examining the fruit flies all the way to the F2 generation would give way to prove or disprove
Mendel s expected results and Morgan s visual results.
Method and Materials
A three week experiment was proposed. On week 1, the preparation of vials was the beginning of the
experiment. An equal amount of food and water was measured and then mixed. This mixture was to be
the food for the larvae. The mixture was placed in the vile with a height of 2 3 cm. The mixture had to
be placed inside and made sure by pressure that no air pockets were

Progress Monitoring Assessment
For the progress monitoring assignment, I first reviewed the students assessments data provide for the
assignment, and using the provided decision tree guide I determined the students levels based on the
FSP (RC, Maze, and WA) scores. Once I had determined their level or box results I filled the decision
tree form in by order of the box results column. I chose to order the results by that column to help
make choosing student groups easier. Once all the students data was filled in the next step I took was
to fill in the suggested curriculum and suggested strategies for each student based on their maze and
word analysis assessment results. Once I had all that information entered I decided to create an extra
column on the decision tree form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All groups would meet three times a week, so we would meet every other day to work on the required
skills. I broke my level one students up into two different groups. Group 1 consists of student 1,
student 6, student 15, student 20, and student 23 while group 2 consists of student 9, student 17,
student 22, and student 25. All of group 1 students scored a ninety percentile or higher in reading
comprehension (RC) so I put these students together so I can provide them with more challenging
strategies and higher level skilled work in order to help them continue to grow academically. Some of
the strategies I would use with these students during small group instruction would be using context
clues to, learning new affixes, and root words to help students read and understand unfamiliar words. I
would also work with these students on different grade appropriate text structures, text features,
summarizing, and main idea to build reading comprehension skills. While my group 2 students are
still overall, high leveled students they scored below the ninetieth percentile but above the eighty
fourth percentile. These students would also receive many of the same instructional strategies that
would challenge them, but also help build upon their existing skills in reading comprehension,
vocabulary, and reasoning

  • 3. The Causes And Cures Of Schizophrenia The causes, cures and intellectual comprehension in schizophrenia patients remains unknown. Scientists have discovered that schizophrenia is a severe condition that develops by a combination of biological, environmental, and unforeseen factors. Since this condition effects no more than two percent of the population, it is challenging to find an adequate sample size for assessments and further study. People suffering from schizophrenia are incapable of determining reality and show a wide array of symptoms varying from delusions, hallucinations, irrational conduct and disorganized speech. The complex severity of these symptoms make it difficult for scientists to find a remedy that works for all patients. Recent studies have shown that identical twins have an increased risk of developing the condition. The risk is increased by half in comparison to individuals who do not carry twin genetics. Many wonder if schizophrenia is caused by a physical abnormality inside the brain, but it has not been scientifically proven yet. Since twins are at the highest at risk for schizophrenia, it is essential to study the behaviors, patterns and recovery methods of these patients. A study conducted by Michael Harms suggests that one of the causes of Schizophrenia is determined by the structure of the thalamus and a reduction in volume of the hippocampus. In the current study, we assessed the volume and shape of the thalamus in subjects with schizophrenia and their nonpsychotic siblings. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Baldwin, King Philip (Philip Augustus), was an important contributor to the growth of the French Monarchy. He was able to increase the Monarchy better then any other King before him. He defeated many enemies, sought to overtake the British crown and embarked on a third crusade. King Philip Augustus brought financial stability to the country and was very popular amongst his subjects. King Philip when assigned King had many goals to achieve to make his Kingdom the most powerful. He changed the political structure to better suit these goals and allow for a better transition with his changes. King Philip Augustus had different relationships, good and bad, with the Catholic Church, the Parisian Elite and England. Philip II, starting at such a young age, had high expectations for the development of the Kingdom. Philip Augustus was the late son of King Louis VII and it was a miracle that King Louis VII could bear a son so late in his regime. His birth at Paris on 21 August 1165 was the occasion of exceptional rejoicing for his parents, and for the Parisian population because it brought long years of anxiety to a close (Baldwin 71). The country finally felt secure knowing there was a male hair in line to rule the Kingdom. King Philip was the son of Louis VII and Alix de Champagne. He was born in Paris and spent as much time as possible in the capital area. His father planned to associate Philip with him on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. For This Project, I Worked With Brandon Bowers To Begin For this project, I worked with Brandon Bowers to begin a donation food drive for the local domestic violence and sexual assault shelter in Murfreesboro, the Bernard House. We discussed the project and picked the Bernard House in late March. When I called, they said that they always needed nonperishable food items, and there was a list of items they were asking for during an Easter food drive that we used in our flyers. On April 5th, I got in contact with a local grocery store and picked up boxes for us to put all of the nonperishable food in. On April 9th, I decorated all of the boxes and made them visible and more appealing, in hopes that more people would donate, with a flyer that Brandon made placed on each of them. Brandon and I then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, when Brandon came to me with the idea of doing a donation drive, I thought it would be a good way of helping women outside of volunteering at an organization. I wanted to do something with a local group, and after seeing the Vagina Monologues this semester and hearing the monologues about sexual assault and intimate partner violence, I thought that helping women who have been victims of such violence would be very important work. I found the Bernard House, which is very close to campus, and got in contact with them. This project has elicited a mix of happiness and frustration. It made me really happy when people were receptive to what we were trying to do. Having professors around campus be very supportive and encouraging when we asked to place boxes in their buildings, as well as the student support we received as we passed out flyers, explained the project, and asked for donations, was very rewarding. On occasion, students would tell us how much they appreciated our project because it was for such a good cause, and many students donated money, which I was not expecting because of the general lack of cash that college students carry around with them. I feel very passionate about helping these women, and I want this donation drive to be very helpful for the shelter. So, when people showed the same passion for the cause, it was very driving and affirming. However, there were times when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In response, employers, in an attempt to increase productivity and decrease health insurance costs, have created wellness programs to combat the growing trend of unhealthy living habits. This paper will discuss the different components of a wellness program, explore a typical employer s overall wellness strategy, and analyze incentives and trends in common wellness programs in America. Studies in 2010 found that indirect costs (e.g., days missed at work) were approximately four times higher for individuals with chronic disease than for those without. Today, wellness programs focus on increased support for the chronic illnesses in the working age population, as employers are concerned with their out of pocket expenses and the effects of employer sponsored health coverage. In a recent survey by Towers Watson and the National Business Group on Health (NBGH), 67 percent of employers identified employees poor health habits as one of their top three challenges to maintaining affordable health coverage. To help offset the increasing health care costs that our society faces today, employers are focusing more on adopting good health practices through promotion and disease prevention strategies, often referred to as workplace wellness program. Disease prevention programs have two stages of prevention. The first is to prevent the onset of diseases or to diagnose, where the focus is on addressing the health related behaviors and risk factor such as encouraging people to consume a healthier diet. The second stage is to treat diseases at an early stage before complications occur. This translates to promoting medication adherence for patients with asthma and other diseases ... • 11. Why Did Napsster Use P2P Technology The Napster web site made file swapping over the Internet available via the software necessary for the Peer to Peer (P2P) file transfer to work. P2P is software that when downloaded onto someone s computer, enables that person to access another person s computer to find and copy certain files that the software is designed to recognize. It was used primarily for copying MP3 files, as a result avoiding the need to actually purchase music on CD or some other format. The popularity of Napster happened quickly with 15 million registered users in less than one year, according to company sources. Napster had the attention of the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), and their concerns of Copyright infringement. About a year after its launch, it was sued by the RIAA, which represented major recording companies such as Universal Music, BMG, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group. They claimed that by allowing users to swap free music recordings, Napster s service violated Copyright laws. Eventually, the judge ruled against Napster forcing them to shut down operations and liquidate its assets [3]. Napster used P2P technology and the use of a central database that held registered users information. The database contained information on the files they were sharing, their log in details and other information. The database made it easy for users to find and download a specific piece of music. Barriers and Disparities in Health Care Everyone should have the opportunity to achieve a healthy life and have comprehensive health care services available to them. To achieve this healthy life, people need to have access to the health care system and to a health care provider with whom they can develop a trusting relationship. However, existing barriers to attaining health care services often lead to disparities which in turn lead to differences in life expectancy, health status and a higher prevalence of certain chronic diseases (HealthyPeople.gov, 2012). With the increasing immigrant population a third barrier affecting access to health care is a cultural barrier. Culture barriers can include values and beliefs, language and race and ethnicity. Health beliefs and behavior can become a barrier when patients decide not to seek medical treatment and instead turn to home remedies and healers when treating illnesses. Approximately 10% of Americans speak a language other than English and can be classified ad being limited in their proficiency. For these patients language becomes a barrier and they are less likely to receive optimal medical treatment (Flores, 2006). Horton and Johnson (2010) stress the importance of communication in reducing disparities and increasing the trust of patients in the health care system. As reported by the American College of Physicians, evidence reveals that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to receive inferior care when compared with non minorities. This occurs even when minorities have access to insurance and adequate income (Racial and ethnic disparities in health care, 2010). Disparities Barriers in health care can lead to disparities in meeting health needs and receiving appropriate care, including preventive services and the prevention of unnecessary hospitalizations (HealthyPeople.gov, 2012). In their 2008 annual report, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality lists several disparities in health care. They report that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States ... Essay on Napoleon Bonaparte and the Catholic Church Tension grew between the Catholic Church and France during the French Revolution, leading to a schism, which deeply devastated the Church s economy. Pope Pius VII and Napoleon Bonaparte came into power as the French Revolution was ending. For different reasons they both saw the importance of restoring Roman Catholicism s position in France. The Catholic Church s initial support of Napoleon greatly affected both parties (O Dwyer 12 14, 43, 49). The loss of one of its great powers caused the Catholic Church great distress. Pope Pius VI, who ruled during the Revolution, died and in 1799, Pope Pius VII was elected. Pius VII inherited many problems, including the division between France and Rome. Just as Pope Pius VII was coming into power, Napoleon Bonaparte, a young, military genius, was elected as First Consul of the Post Revolutionary French government (O Dwyer 43, 49). Both Napoleon and Pius VII saw the importance in ending the schism and restoring Catholicism in France. Napoleon saw the reestablishment of the Catholic Church in France as a social bedrock and as an ideological anodyne (Ellis 41) and used it to gain immediate political power. The Catholic Church wanted influence in France again and was willing to strike a deal with Napoleon to do so. In 1801 they officially published the Concordat, which restored Catholicism as the main religion in France (O Dwyer 56). In 1802, Napoleon, without Pius consent, added an additional a list of police regulations that severely restricted the Papacy s role in France (Ellis 41), known as the Organic Articles, which aggravated Pope Pius VII. The Church s support of the Concordat legitimized Napoleon s autocratic rule, but it also stopped the schism that the Revolution had started. In the 1950 s, houses were built and the first choice for plumbing pipes was made of lead. The paint used to cover the interiors was lead based. Children s toys were also coated with lead based paint. Nowadays, lead can still be found in some glassware; however, the government has banned the use of lead in the rest. The author may be directing attention to the problem of poor youth that do not have the means to survive. This could be another example of the social welfare system of Sweden benefitting the adults, while the children suffer. In addition to Hakan victimizing a young boy, Hakan rapes Eli. I indirectly measured the metabolic rate of each organism by calculating their respiration rates. In crickets, gas exchange is accomplished via a tracheal system [Contreras, Bradley, 2010]. Pill bugs have pleopods, gill like respiratory organs [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. My hypothesis was that the crickets will have a faster respiration rate than the pill bugs. I used a respirometer to measure the oxygen consumption of pill bugs and crickets. After plotting the data, I used the slope to obtain the respiration rate. The respiration rate per gram of organism for the pill bugs was 0.0025 mL/min./g. The respiration rate per gram of organism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pill bugs, Armadillidium vulgare, are terrestrial isopods [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Thus, they are not very well adapted to land [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Water loss is a reoccurring theme because terrestrial isopods lack cuticular lipids and the elaborate spiracular apparatus of insects [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Most of the water loss is evaporation from the respiratory organs [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. The respiratory organs are called pleopods, and are gill like organs located on the ventral abdominal segments [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. Interestingly, pill bugs are capable of conglobation, the ability to roll up in a ball [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. In addition to protection from predation, conglobation may also conserve water [Gibbs, Smigel, 2008]. In this experiment, I will be comparing the metabolic rates of two different species. Because they are two different species, and differ in physiology, I will expect to see a difference in metabolic rate. More specifically, I expect crickets to have a higher metabolic rate, due to their efficient respiratory system. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the issues of class and stratification are manifest in many types of media, including films. Like many nations, the United States operates under the class system. The sociologist Dalton Conley defined the class system as, an economically based hierarchical system characterized by cohesive, oppositional groups and somewhat loose social mobility (Conley 249). Still Alice and The Notebook depict social stratification and the struggles between different socioeconomic classes. Still Alice follows the life of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor at Columbia University, as she is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s and fights to retain her memories and relationships. The film is set in modern day America, in which there is a stigma associated with dementia, there is a large degree of gender inequality, and some careers are viewed as prestigious (e.g. doctors and lawyers) while others are condemned by society (e.g. starving artists). The Notebook shares the story of Noah Calhoun as he tries to revive the memories of his wife Allie, who suffers from dementia, by reading her the story of their undying love. While Noah reads to Allie, the movie displays their life in the 1940s. During this time, America was facing World War II, segregation, and a highly stratified society (U.S. Timeline, 1940 1949). Over 90% of coffee is produced in developing countries, and millions of small producers income comes from growing coffee. Coffee is produced and exported mostly from South American countries, while mainly industrialized countries are the ones importing the most coffee. Worldwide, 25 million small producers rely on coffee for a living, and in Brazil, over 5 million people are employed by the commodity. Brazil is the top country in exporting coffee and is where almost a third of the whole world s production of coffee is. Coffee is a more labor intensive work culture than other commodities like sugar cane or cattle because it is not automated work and requires attention. It is a major export commodity and was the top agricultural export for 12 countries in 2004. It was the second most valuable commodity exported by developing countries from 1970 to 2000. World coffee production predicted for 2017/18 is 159 million bags which is the same as the last year because lower output in Brazil is offset by higher production in Vietnam, Mexico, and Indonesia and slight increases in other countries. World exports of green coffee are expected to stay steady with 111 million bags. Whether or not you believe either of these, it is certain that Nat Turner was a revolutionary figure. Nat Turner played a key role in the abolishment of slavery. He organized the most notable slave uprising in modern history. Under his leadership, rebellious slaves killed over 50 white people in August 1831. Although violence should not be condoned, the brutality of the massacre opened the eyes of Virginians and citizens across America. The rebellion began to make people see the extent slaves would go to in order to be freed from their confined lives. Nat Turner s impact on human history was substantial. His initial goal of freeing his people of slavery was not accomplished initially. However, his expression of fearlessness and determination was a key point in the disintegration of slavery 34 years after his death. Ever since the attacks, Nat Turner and his life history have been well documented. There are so many people that have been affected by Nat Turner s life. People have been left with questions that cannot be answered about the rebellion. In order to look for answers to Turner s controversial actions, we look toward the authors, producers, and historians who have studied Nat Turner and his life. Immediately after his capture, Nat Turner delivered his confessions to Thomas R. Gray. Gray wrote down what Turner told him and published a pamphlet after Turner s death. ... • 37. How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps, computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great mind that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented the alternating current, induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote control, radar, and even cell phones. So why don t we think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern society? Because while Tesla s mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Brown, from the Western Union, decided to invest in Tesla s AC theories. In a modest laboratory not too far from Edison s offices, Tesla crafted the motors just as he imagined them. He had finally been able to create the machine he had dreamed of for so long, but how would it fare against Edison s generators? In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were accepted and those inventions proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George Westinghouse caught wind of Tesla s incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold. The advancements from Tesla s patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future of electricity in the U.S. was at stake, as well as whether Edison s DC or Westinghouse s AC would prevail as the central form of energy. • 39. The Affordable Healthcare Act And The Catholic Faith The Affordable Healthcare Act and the Catholic Faith The healthcare system of the United States was established as a system of health and welfare programs created to provide affordable treatment to the citizens of the United States. Recently, the Affordable Health Care Act was passed changing the structure of the system (Mulvany, 2012). While in theory the new arrangement works, it has its flaws due to the resulting cost, slowness, and the government interfering with religious and personal beliefs. These problems have led many people to question the role of the government in the life of the individual. The Supreme Court s favorable ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act allowed for healthcare to be available for many Americans who would otherwise not receive medical benefits. This is because it increases the number of people covered by Medicare/Medicaid, and lowers the cost of insurance through employers. While this idea is good in theory, paying for it is a challenge due to the fact that it will only add to the nation s already enormous debit of several trillion dollars (Mulvany, 2012). From 2010 2019, the United States is predicted to spend around 400 billion dollars on healthcare. This prediction has prompted lawmakers to reduce spending on Medicare, Medicaid and other welfare programs. The spending cuts will result in less people getting the care they need due to the limited availability of money for care and the increase in the number of beneficiaries receiving ... In the charts listed above, the nominal GDP is greater than real GDP in each quarter of 2016 due to the nominal GDP reflecting current GDP at current price and real GDP reflecting current GDP at past year prices. Also, the chart reflects that the nominal GDP was greater than the real GDP for each quarter of 2016 due to the value of the nominal GDP sub categories (personal consumption expenditures, gross private domestic investments, and government consumption expenditures and gross investment) all being significantly higher than the same sub categories listed under the real GDP. Some differences between the two products are services or the market of goods that are produced for that respective country s economy. However, the GNP does not include the annual foreign production that is inherited by the domestic citizens, whereas the GDP does include the foreign productions that are inherited by its domestic citizens. According to the table above, to determine the GNP and GDP you will calculate the national product total from the national and personal income. National income is the overall annual value of goods and services within a respective country economy. The chart shows that in 2016, the GNP was $7,864.80 higher than the national income. National income is broken down into ten categories (compensation of employees, rents, interest, proprietor s income, corporate income taxes, dividends, undistributed corporate profits, indirect business taxes, consumption of fixed capital and net foreign factor income). However, the employee compensation makes up the largest portion of the national income. In my opinion, I believe this to be true, because the economy is valued by its population and the services that are provided and goods that are sold. This can t happen without having citizens gainfully employed, which in return will need to be compensated for the work they are contributing to their economy. Part III. The Just In Time (JIT) system is a process where goods are ordered as required, as opposed to the currently used batch processing system where goods are made in bulk and stored in warehouses until sold. The Just In Time system was initially developed to not only cut down the amount of waste produced by other systems, which was seen as incurring unnecessary costs rather than adding value to the company, but to also meet customer demands with minimum delays. It has been found that when implemented correctly the JIT system can benefit the company in numerous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In its simplest terms, the Kanban system is used to alert the production team exactly what needs to be produced, the quantity required and the designated time frame (Horngren, George Srikant 1997). 5. Expected Results The Batch Processing System currently used at AG Z is a system where products are produced in bulk quantities or batches whether required by the customer or not. These goods are then stored in warehouses until required. This process produces large amounts of waste in both inventory and warehousing as the goods are not sold immediately, and could be required to be held for any length of time. The Just in Time system however is a process that produces necessary products as required. This system is highly beneficial as it reduces the amount of inventory waste, as the goods are made to order. It also reduces warehousing costs as the goods are made and shipped directly to the customer rather than being held for extended periods at the warehouse. As a result of these benefits, the JIT system has been particularly effective for companies with a high customer demand on newly developed technologies such as computers. If the product is produced when required and as specified by the customer, this not only allows the customer to order exactly what they want with modern technology, but it also benefits the manufacturer who is guaranteed a return on the goods straight ... • 43. Emily Dickinson s Capitalization and Punctuation The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson s poetry stands out because of its unconventional use of capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of the dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson s unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part of Dickinson s penmanship (Weisbuch 73). They therefore edit Dickinson s poetry and publish them in standardized form. Others believe that the capitalization and punctuation were a conscious effort on Dickinson s part. These scholars notice the little nuances of Dickinson s dashes, such as whether ... As demonstrated above, the word light is not capitalized. Furthermore, Dickinson also capitalizes words which are not nouns, as seen in lines 4 6 of He fumbles at your Soul . The word ethereal is an adjective, but Dickinson chooses to capitalize it. He stuns you by degrees Prepares your brittle Nature For the Ethereal Blow The capitalized words are the key words of the poem. They add weight to the lines, tipping the balance of the poetic rhythm. The reader is invited to ponder over their meaning and significance (Miller 59). The capitalization gives Dickinson s poems concreteness and symbolism (Miller 58). The reader s attention is drawn to these capitalized words. They form an image in the reader s mind. For example, in the first example, the capitalized words are Slant, Winter, Afternoons, Heft, Cathedral, and Tunes. These words alone evoke the image of a cold and lonely day which burdens the heart like the heavy and mournful tones of an organ. Just words Winter Afternoons carry sensations of frigidness, bleakness, and loneliness. Winter Afternoons set the scene and describe the mood (Porter 141). Cormier s son Peter, had refused to sell chocolates at his school s annual sale as a matter of principle (Kemp1), so Cormier thought that it would be an interesting plot for a book. In this book, Robert Cormier introduces us to many characters that personify evil in order to try to control and manipulate each other to gain power. The concept of power is represented in many different ways throughout this novel. In this paper I will explain how power is represented in The Chocolate War, and how it works. In chapter 3 we are reminded that The Chocolate War is also a coming of age novel. When Jerry looks at the pornographic magazine, he is now beginning to want to know and understand the processes of adolescent and adulthood. So he buys a magazine with the curiosity of what kind of satisfaction the other kids were receiving by glaring at the images in the magazines. He is in that stage of wanting to be accepted. Cormier made Jerry s character out to be an outcast, being the one that would always get beaten up by the bully. Which proved to be correct when Emile Janza, the school s bully begins to pick on him. Although Emile was the school s bully he too, respected the Vigils to a certain extent. Archie was also a bully, but he bullied the minds of the other kids. He did not resort to physical abuse but he indeed psychologically bullied people including Emile Janza. Fear also played a factor throughout this story. Fear is what made the Goober go into Brother Eugene s room and loosen all of the screws from the furniture. This brings us back to the psychological bullying of Archie, because the Goober was mentally sick when he found out that the actions of his assignment had made Brother Eugene sick. The other students were also frightened by the Vigils so they to carried out any assignments that they were given. Drosophila Ausomal and Sex-Linked Cross Essay Drosophila Autosomal and Sex Linked Cross The idea of the project was to experiment breeding Drosophila Melanogaster (fruit fly) to figure out if certain genes of that species were sex linked or not (autosomal). A mono hybrid cross and di hybrid cross was performed. For the mono hybrid cross, white eyed female and red eyed male were placed in one vial for them to reproduce. For the di hybrid cross, red eyed and normal winged flies and sepia eyed and vestigial winged flies were placed in their vial to reproduce. This theory was construed based on the fact that a new phenotypic ratio occurred in the F2 generation with a di hybrid cross (9:3:3:1). Here, alleles (genes) are expected to segregate independently from each other (Cain, Urry, Reece, 2010). Thomas Hunt Morgan continued Mendel s work and in 1911, decided to experiment on Drosophila melanogaster, also known as fruit fly. His study on them was due to the fact that they had only 4 chromosomes which 3 were autosomal and 1 was a sex chromosome. His study proved that eye color was sex linked (Cain, Urry, Reece, 2010). Other traits were not linked. Any mutation can change the result of a mutated gene which would give variations. Such is the case in the eyes of the fruit flies. The purpose of this experiment is to see if Mendel and Morgan both had valid points. Examining the fruit flies all the way to the F2 generation would give way to prove or disprove Mendel s expected results and Morgan s visual results. Method and Materials A three week experiment was proposed. On week 1, the preparation of vials was the beginning of the experiment. An equal amount of food and water was measured and then mixed. This mixture was to be the food for the larvae. The mixture was placed in the vile with a height of 2 3 cm. The mixture had to be placed inside and made sure by pressure that no air pockets were ...
